You'll Never Guess Why the Internet Is Calling Jeffree Star a Liar This Time

The internet has come a long way since MySpace . Gone are the days of top-fives and picking a song for your profile. But weā€™ll never forget pioneers who made the web what it is today.

One influencer that rose to fame in the early stages of the digital era is Jeffree Star . Yet amid his rise, Jeffree has consistently found himself at the center of controversy.

Today, he lives with his pet yaks at the Star Yak Ranch in Wyoming . Although Jeffree previously claimed that the wild oxen were safe from harm at his ranch, he's apparently since had a change of heart. In a video posted on Monday, June 6, Jeffree gave spectators a tour of his 80-acre property.

The post comes weeks after revealing his plans to sell yaksā€™ meat for profit ā€” and social media took Jeffree to task.

Jeffree Star at Star Yak Ranch

The Star Yak Ranch will sell yaksā€™ meat, according to Jeffree Star.

Two years after Jeffree bought the Star Yak Ranch, Jeffree shared his premium meat with the world. In a May 2022 post , Jeffree wrote, ā€œOur delicious grass-fed yak meat will be available on our online store soon, hoping for next month!ā€

He went on to list the benefits of eating yaksā€™ meat ā€” and according to sources like the Alberta Bison Ranch and the Rapid City Journal , he was speaking facts. The caption continued, ā€œSuper high in protein, zinc, and B vitamins. Being 90% fat-free, yak is a healthy red meat alternative and has more dense nutritional content than skinless chicken, salmon, and beef.ā€

At this time, itā€™s unclear how much his meat is selling for, but if his cattle are anything like his cosmetics brand, customers will have to pay a pretty penny to get their hands on it.

Jeffree Star responded to criticisms of the Star Yak Ranch.

Every few years, Jeffree finds himself in hot water. This time, fans took to social media to accuse Jeffree of being a liar, particularly given that his makeup line was vegan and cruelty-free.

As one user put it , ā€œPeople are criticizing Jeffree Star right now not just because they hate him, but because a year ago he said his yaks were his pets and that he was only going to love them and cuddle them.ā€

ā€œAnd now, he's selling yak meat while stans are excusing it with 'he changed his mind,ā€™ which is bonkers,ā€ the tweet continued.

Since then, Jeffree, who has been a long-time connoisseur of meat, has addressed his fansā€™ criticisms. Speaking to Insider , he revealed that while he still finds cosmetic testing on animals to be "disgusting," he developed an interest in the "pasture to plate lifestyle" ā€” one in which animals could be raised for meat but still treated kindly, and the ranch run sustainably.

Itā€™s for this reason, Jeffree says, that he started the Star Yak Ranch to begin with.

"People keep making jokes like, 'Are you butchering Swiss Chocolate and Buster?' ... Any yak with a name tag is our pet, and we do have a pasture in the back of my land where we're just making food," he explained.

"The thought of raising an animal in peace and happiness, from pasture to plate, is something you don't learn living in a big city like LA," he added.

Despite the criticism, other fans have supported Jeffree's venture and applauded how he's been running his ranch.

As one user wrote on Instagram, "Heā€™s raising meat yaks and pet yaks separately. Both [are] getting great care but the ones specifically for meat are left to roam without much human interaction, while his pet yaks are given names and a lot of human interaction. Both are being treated incredibly well for livestock."

Jeffree Star Launching Online Shop for Yak Meat From His Wyoming Ranch

Jeffree Star , who has been quietly raising yaks in Wyoming, is now facing backlash after revealing he will begin selling yak meat despite simultaneously owning a cruelty-free beauty brand.

Serving up the announcement on Instagram , Star Yak Ranch shared a photo of packaged meat options that will likely become available for purchase online in June.

"Our delicious grass fed #Yak meat will be available on our online store soon, hoping for next month!" the Star Yak Ranch captioned the slideshow of images.

Yak Star Ranch also announced plans to sell meat locally to Casper, Wyo. residents.

"Yak meat facts: Super high in protein, zinc, and B vitamins. Being 90% fat-free, Yak is a healthy red meat alternative and has more dense nutritional content than skinless chicken, salmon, and beef. Yak is tender and slightly sweeter than bison," the post continued.

The post was met with immediate backlash, though this isn't the first time Star has been scrutinized for his ranch.

According to Insider , Star initially filed to trademark Star Yak Ranch in the categories of butchering, clothing and edible pet treats in September 2021.

When the news broke, Star faced backlash from fans for his plan to diversify his business portfolio outside of his cruelty-free makeup products.

According to Insider's report, Star responded to the criticism in a Snapchat video defending his proprietary decision.

"So, let's say I trademark it for yarn, cheese, breeding, butchering, etc., it doesn't mean I'm doing any of those things," Star said, according to the site. "When I'm laying on a yak and I'm naming them, nothing is happening except brushing them, loving them and feeding them."

Back on the chopping block once again, Star, who owns Tibetan yaks originating from the Himalayas, is being roasted by Twitter for "slaughtering" his "pets."

‘I thought he treated them like family’: Jeffree Star is selling Yak meat from his Star Yak Ranchā€”and many fans are shocked

“star killing yaks…is a pivot i genuinely did not see coming.”.

Photo of Jack Alban

Jeffree Star rose into YouTube prominence by posting makeup tutorials which has earned him a hefty net worth of around $200 million according to various outlets . While many of these salary reporting sites’ findings should be taken with a grain of salt , his cosmetics line is successful and worth a pretty penny .

The YouTuber impressed other successful influencers with the sheer amount of wealth in his possession, too. Who can forget when Shane Dawson rolled around in Star’s pink Lamborghini and couldn’t stop expressing just how loaded the cosmetics guru was?

Star has been known to keep a pretty diversified investment portfolio, too. He told Dawson (as per Seventeen ), “I own investment properties around the world, I invest in the marijuana business. I own an entire shipment and fulfillment center, I own a merchandise company, I print and manufacture everything myself.”

While there’s certainly a lot of money to be made for top influencers on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, business ventures that can be bolstered through one’s own personal branding is where the real money-making is. Dr. Dre for instance, earned a reported $2.6 billion for Apple’s purchase of the Beats brand, which dwarfs the amount of cash he earned for himself in his music career alone .

Star must know that there’s serious profit margins to be made in the ranching industry . The larger the cattle, the more care and land is required for their development but, in theory, the larger the payout per cattle will bring.

Star is getting into a meat business that could be described as bespoke: he’s raising, butchering, and selling Yak.

Yak meat has been likened to bison in terms of macro nutrients. According to Cook Gem : “Compared to beef or bison, yak meat has a sweeter and more delicate taste…yak has a higher moisture and iron content, meaning it is often richer and lighter in taste. Its fat content is similar to that of a bison or elk, creating a healthier alternative to beef…[it] has a comparable protein level, and contains more vitamins and minerals.”

While there have been studies about the health benefits of eating Yak over beef for a few years , Star is probably one of the more prominent public figures who have associated themselves with the animal as a red meat alternative.

But many have criticized his decision to go into the Yak ranching business, especially because his cosmetics line is 100% cruelty free and Vegan according to Heal Label .

woke up and the girls are discoursing ā€¦ i am aware how farming works. this was simply an unexpected pivot because jeffree has cultivated a lifestyle brand, including plushies and makeup, out of his love for yaks. so the picture of ground yak wasā€¦ well, unexpected. that is all — matt (@mattxiv) May 28, 2022

The bulk of the criticism, many said, didn’t come from the fact that Star’s cosmetics are cruelty free, but because he didn’t “express…his intentions from the start” when he decided to hang out with a bunch of Yaks on a farm so he could decompress from the stresses of managing his multiple business ventures.

As it turns out, his Yak de-stressing “paradise” ended up being yet another business venture.

Yā€™all ainā€™t getting it. Itā€™s weird bc he never expressed his intentions from the start. After leaving LA he made it seem like he was just gonna have this yak paradise bc it helped him destress and get away from LA life and all of sudden we find out heā€™s killing them — Jenny Bravo (@OhHeyItsJenny_) May 28, 2022
What the actual fuck. I thought he treated them like family and bonded with them… but he slaughters them???? WTF!! — David 惇惓惃惉 (@david_vdv) May 27, 2022

Others stated that they didn’t see anything wrong with what Star is doing and that the Yaks on his ranch are probably enjoying a better life than most other animals who are used as cattle on other properties.

It's a ranch, that's the hole point of owning cattle. I suppose his ranch treats them a little better than the average meat factory. — Tello (@puppet_username) May 28, 2022

The influencer started an Instagram account for his Yak farm, called @staryakranch , where he posts updates about the animals and selfies he’s taken with the Yaks in 2021. However, he recently shared some of the products offered by his farm, including ground yak meat, yak steaks, and yak jerky.

The Daily Dot has reached out to Star Yak Ranch for further comment.

Cruelty-Free Brand Owner Jeffree Star Under Fire For Selling Meat Made Of His “Pet” Yaks

By suzana rose, may 30, 2022.

jeffree star yacht

Spread the word.

Jeffree Star has been a controversial figure since the beginning of his career. It's part of how he attracts all the attention he does, and it's part of why he became one of the largest beauty YouTubers. His brand, Jeffree Star Cosmetics, is also huge.

There's always a controversy with him. Whether he's destroying Chanel bags with a chainsaw for views (sure, not a huge deal, but it's a weird social status flex) or being straight-up racist on camera, multiple times. You might also recall that he named his eyeshadow palette "Cremated" in the midst of the pandemic, while millions of people worldwide were dying.

For these reasons, I didn't add Jeffree Star Cosmetics to our list of cruelty-free brands, despite them being a vegan brand. I know, I was being biased. But it's my list, and there are certain brands I choose not to promote. To this day, I don't add any MLM brands because of the ethical implications of pyramid schemes. I know some of you are upset about me not adding Arbonne and Beautycounter, but I can't in good conscience promote these predatory companies.

In 2020, Jeffree Star Cosmetics joined Leaping Bunny. He also had apologized for past behavior, and I knew that many cruelty-free shoppers were supporters of his brand. I decided to add them to our cruelty-free list, since his cruelty-free claims were vetted by Leaping Bunny.

The brand is also fully vegan, although Jeffree isn't. This isn't a problem, and any progress in moving away from animal cruelty in the beauty industry should be applauded. Regarding his vegan status, he claimed:

I see no conflict. I chose to create a cosmetics line that doesnā€™t torture and test on animals. We all know Iā€™ve never claimed to be vegan, itā€™s about evolving in the beauty industry & moving past the old ways https://t.co/KDaI9CftMU ā€” Jeffree Star (@JeffreeStar) May 28, 2022

In 2020, Jeffree Star purchased a ranch in Wyoming, where he eventually started raising yaks. He posted several pictures of his yaks on social media, claiming that these yaks are his "pets" and part of his "family".

Jeffree Star has spent the past year preparing for a new era, the Wyoming-based Star Yak Ranch. He filed to trademark a line of yak yarn, dog treats, clothes, etc. This summer, Star quietly launched a yak ranch social media presence & bought 40+ yaks. https://t.co/ugLwhLW4hJ pic.twitter.com/VkvCNpkCWf ā€” Kat Tenbarge (@kattenbarge) August 31, 2021

Little did we know, behind the scenes, he was butchering the yaks to sell their meat. The thing is, Jeffree Star never hid his yak meat business. They even have their own social media channel, where he showcases packs of yak meat. So we have to wonder, is this another publicity stunt for Jeffree to promote his new venture? I mean come on, the address of where you can go buy the meat is in the Instagram caption of the controversial post.

jeffree star really slaughtered his pet yaks and is selling the meat ???? ā€” frogan (@fr0gan) May 28, 2022
I absolutely hate Jeffree Star. This MF has a yak ranch, talking about loving these animals, pics cuddling them and shit only to ACTUALLY now be selling Yak meat?? What a sick bastard. ā€” shelby grzejka (taylorā€™s version) (@shlbybby) May 29, 2022
Jeffree Star going from selling "vegan cruelty free" makeup to now selling yak meat really shows that the morals and ethics of rich people rely entirely on what seems the most profitable in the moment ā€” ????āœØbonbonāœØ???? (@PastelBabyBun) May 29, 2022

These are the same tactics used by Kim Kardashian and Nikita Dragun. As long as we give these stories attention, much like I'm doing now, the behavior won't stop. I chose to share this story because I have an ethical audience who might like to be warned before purchasing Jeffree Star Cosmetics. However since this story was picked up all over the media, I'm sure it was a net positive for Jeffree and his yak meat. Thoughts?

Iā€™m in agreement with this. I draw the line with showing off his ā€œbabiesā€ and then telling audience he kills them. Horrified is the word for my shock. He wonā€™t escape karma.

' src=

Glad I’m not the family member.

' src=

There are people out there that will do ANYTHING for money or attention. I feel that he loves to be in the spotlight, whether it be for negative or positive purposes!

' src=

Exactly. Lisa’s comments indicate she is not understanding the situation. And, what’s with the name calling? Unacceptable.

' src=

The problem wasn’t his makeup, that was very good product, so good in-fact it always made me wonder if he was telling the truth, i never actually bought any of it but family members have, my concern always was what was he was spending the money earned by it on, Fast cars(leather seats etc) designer bags and clothes from people who are NOT cruelty free, stupid items, is his household cruelty free, i very much doubt it, a very hypocritical view point from him, if he isn’t cruelty free at home then in my view his cruelty free business is just to fill a niche in the market (a money maker), i would like to know just how cruelty free he lives, he has never hidden his spending and what products he has, its for all to see in pictures, and thats what we need to think of with cruelty free, you are buying cruelty free but are your hard earned pennies going to carry on that tradition when its in their pockets.

Suzana, if you feel a company is not in good favour then I’m all with you on that, you recommend who you want or don’t want and ignore the hecklers, keep up your incredibly amazing work we all love, you are the only one i have faith in for cruelty free accuracy please dont ever stop. x

' src=

A vegan and cruelty-free cosmetic line which is owned by a profitmonger who butchers his pet yaks? No, I wonā€™t buy Jeffree StarCosmetics. Very disappointed in this line, and in Mr. Star. This may be short term profitable, but itā€™s unethical and just creepy. Count me, my two daughters, and their many friends out. We buy a lot of makeup.

' src=

Thank you for being even more then ???? about cruelity free brands. Like also with for example Mary kay

And I agree this sick person Jeffree Star has gotten positive PR on the web????

' src=

I just don’t put ‘cruelty’ in the same lane as ‘slaughter’. I’m completely cruelty free with products I use (cosmetic etc). But I’m not a full vegetarian.

' src=

Thank you for giving me this info.Who understands humanity to its depths? find that One who will give insight & Comfort in these shocking episodes. The brutality that goes on is best left to the one who does it,Yet we are told by the Wise Ones that everyone must pay for every deed we do.None can escape the reactions, but we can stop doing these evils & stop our own suffering too…so this I try to fathom. I have witnessed evils with my own eyes: a little buck chased by =- 6 BIG dogs lead by a team of people out to kill the buck.I can only say, do not do anything yourself wrong, as it will bring its consequenses sooner or later.I am happy to know about the pure products you promote as we need so much purity in this world to help us Good wishes, Geraldine

' src=

Thanks for reporting this information. I never heard of this man. Heā€™s doing such a cruel thing. Why is there even a demand for yak meat? Not enough other animals who are suffering in farm factories every day?

' src=

Never heard of him until now. I am vegan but I wouldnā€™t buy his products since he slaughters yaks. Too many choices to even consider any of his products. Yuck!

' src=

Well said! I’m so sorry I believed in him and bought as many products as I could! To have now my messages deleted and myself ignored, like he did to tons, on Instagram & Facebook!

' src=

I will absolutely NOT BUY ANYTHING from Jeffree Star! What a scam and a hypocrite!!! Two character traits that I hate most!!

His distinction between torturing + killing makes no sense. He obviously has no idea what transpires when an animal is slaughtered. They most definitely are tortured both physically + psychologically as they are pushed, shoved + electrically shocked while surrounded by the sounds + smells of other animals being killed. Sorry so graphic but that is the reality. Obviously, he jumped on the vegan makeup bandwagon only as a means to secure a position to make money in a popular market. Hopefully, his little corner of that market will collapse when those of his followers who are truly interested in animal welfare, realize he is trying to make money in two diametrically opposed worlds.

Perfectly said! I’m no longer buying from him! Plus, like I earlier wrote, deleting and ignoring all the comments and people that don’t agree with what he’s doing to those yaks?! Totally horrible!

' src=

Thank you for all you do and for your due diligence. You give so much to our cruelty fee and vegan society.

This S.O.B. Probably only started vegan makeup because it is in vogue at the moment to be vegan and to care about animals- itā€™s like saying you care about the environment and climate change and then opening a fossil fuel processing plant that blasts filth into the atmosphere.

All he cares about is the bottom line and people like you have his number and thanks to you now so do we all. Thank you so much!

' src=

????????????????????????

' src=

Gross. The rich keep getting richer. This person never cared about having a vegan cosmetics line for ethical reasons, they did it because itā€™s a marketing buzzword now. Stop supporting this line. Please post more information and stories about this person to warn truly ethical consumers about their practices! Pets are not food. Animals are not food. Period. Iā€™d like to see this person kill and butcher these animals themselves.

Totally right! I no longer support him nor buying his products! All the cosmetics I have from his brand are in the trash. Deleting all the comments and ignoring all the people who don’t agree with the yak meat?! Disgusting!!

' src=

Thank you, Suzanne, for the update. I will never buy anything from his company because he is a repulsive piece of crap, and was before he started slaughtering his pets. You, Suzanne, are allowed to put any companies on your lists, they are YOUR lists and you spend a lot of time and effort in this work! I support YOU and your ethics.

Yes! And totally unprofessional and not moral to delete all the comments and ignore all the people who don’t agree with this!

' src=

I will no longer buy any thing from Jeffery starr. Iā€™m very saddened by what he is doing. If he saw them as family he shouldnā€™t be killing these innocent animals.

So right…. And to delete the posts and ignore all the people from his accounts just because they asked, like I did, how is it possible, how can he….

He / his team deleted all the posts from the Instagram and blocked all the people who just not like what he’s doing to some of the yaks – including me – I simply asked how can he play with some and have others killed – in a matter of minutes they deleted my words and blocked me and tons of people like me! Every single post / fan that wasn’t kissing his ass got deleted and those followers ignored! During the years I invested hundreds in his cosmetics to now see I, we, have NO freedom of speech?! Shame!!

' src=

I am new to buying makeup. I have been scouring the internet to find the companies that are vegan inside and out. I did not Jeffree Stars line was vegan. However, now that I know about his yak meat venture, I’ll stay away from his products. I am a Vegetarian. I can’t, in good conscience, buy what he’s selling.

' src=

Thank you for the info. Biggest hypocrite ever. No vegetarian or person who cares about honesty or transparency should EVER BY anything from him

' src=

Lisa, YOU are ignorant for posing this comment. Yes, to each their own for farmers doing their thing; however, he has, on several accounts, posted about them being his pets and family, which is what CFK is stating above and provided proof for, so there is no narrative to push. It’s facts that are out in the open that you can take two seconds to look up yourself, but instead want to push your own narrative that CFK is pushing a narrative, lol.

CFK is pointing out the hypocrisy of calling them family and pets, while simultaneously raising them for meat. He also calls his Pomeranians family, so I guess you’d be ok with him breeding, butchering, and selling them for food as well?

Other farm to table meat houses shouldn’t be in the line of fire and your “what aboutism” lacks foundation here because: 1. don’t have a cruelty free and vegan cosmetics line 2. certainly don’t consider their meat animals friends/family

' src=

This is so hypocritical and shocking level of no morals. This is all about cash profit. Disgusting human being. I would NEVER purchase anything from this monster!

' src=

I lived in LA when Jeffree Star was coming up. In the 00ā€™s gossip and viciousness abounded. TMZ, Perez Hilton (Mario Lavandeira), paparazzi everywhere. Garbage human beings everywhere. Jeffree Star, while I’ve never spoken a word to him, was quite obviously intimidated by me. He would shrink away after I’d catch him staring at me all the time. Who am I? No one, just a high res empath. He, like most, can talk a good game behind the camera with no one to debate. However, in public, I saw him shrink away many times.

This is just one more reason I don’t like him and one more reason I will never give him a penny of my money. He quite clearly knew that this would come to light. His ego of naming it after himself is proof of that. Just keep this in the back of your mind, he’s an insecure p.o.s. and tries to make himself feel better by attacking people from behind a computer screen.

' src=

You are really ignorant posting this. The man (the company), have ā€œpetā€ yaks which are bred for things such as wool, now the ranch has bought and is breeding other yaks for meat (pasture to plate). This is what thousands of farmers do across the States and the UK. Why are you not going after them? I would like to see you have the facts straight and not push this narrative that the ranch is killing ā€œpetsā€.

' src=

What’s the difference between the “pet” yaks and the ones that are getting slaughtered?

Thousands of farmers are not selling vegan cosmetics named after themselves and touting how wonderful they are because of their cosmetics. This is not a farm to table conversation btw. My farm to table are organic vegetables, legumes and fruits. I am vegan so I want an ethical vegan cruelty free cosmetics company that I make my purchases from. I worked too hard as a public high school teacher to waste my money on frauds and support the slaughter of innocent creatures business. Youā€™re on the wrong blog with your attitude: the meat and dairy industry would enjoy your support.

Jeffree Star Faces Backlash For Selling Yak Meat Despite Owning Cruelty-Free Beauty Brand

jeffree star yacht

Jeffree Star is diversifying his business portfolio.

The controversial YouTube star shocked fans over the weekend when he revealed that he is now selling yak meat from his Wyoming farm, Star Yak Ranch.

“Our delicious grass fed  #Yak  meat will be available on our online store soon, hoping for next month!” he wrote on his farm’s Instagram account. “WYOMING & Casper locals! TOMORROW 5/28 we will be selling yak meat from 10AM-1PM at our warehouse! Come stop by and say hey and we have every cut available”.

In mid-2021, the beauty mogul listed his L.A. mansion and permanently moved to his ranch in Wyoming. He began preparations to relocate in 2020 following several scandals that threatened his career.

Though he stayed quiet on the farm’s operations, Jeffree has spoken frequently over the past year about his love of yak farming, saying he is “in love” with their spirit and calling his 40+ animals part of his “family”.

On September 1st, 2021, Insider reported that Jeffree had filed a trademark line for yak-related products, including yak yarn, treats, clothing, and more. Following this report, the creator allegedly posted an Instagram story claiming his yaks were just for petting and loving.

Jeffree Star has spent the past year preparing for a new era, the Wyoming-based Star Yak Ranch. He filed to trademark a line of yak yarn, dog treats, clothes, etc. This summer, Star quietly launched a yak ranch social media presence & bought 40+ yaks. https://t.co/ugLwhLW4hJ pic.twitter.com/VkvCNpkCWf — Kat Tenbarge (@kattenbarge) August 31, 2021

Fast forward less than a year, however, and it’s clear Jeffree’s plan to farm, harvest, and sell meat from his yaks has likely been in the works for years.

Several people have taken to social media to criticise the social media star for intentionally deceiving fans, while others note the hypocrisy in Jeffree selling yak meat while owning a cruelty-free cosmetics brand.

Taking to Twitter, Jeffree addressed the criticism, saying he is helping supply his local community with food and has donated “over 1000 pounds of meat to shelters.”

Our country is trying to take womenā€™s rights away and thereā€™s already so much hate on the Internet every single momentā€¦ Thereā€™s no way people are actually concerned about me supplying my local community with food? Iā€™ve donated over 1000 pounds of meat to shelters — Jeffree Star (@JeffreeStar) May 28, 2022

Jeffree continued, addressing his former comments that his yaks are pets.

“Stop using the same regurgitated quote from last year when I said ‘all of my yaks are pets..’ THEY ARE. But months later I learned how healthy #yak meat is and I started to appreciate learning where my food comes fromā€¦ Educate yourself & not immediately lash out at,” he wrote.

He later reiterated that “every yak on my social media is my pet”.

Stop using the same regurgitated quote from last year when I said ā€œall of my yaks are pets..ā€ šŸŒ¾ THEY ARE. But months later I learned how healthy #yak meat is and I started to appreciate learning where my food comes fromā€¦ Educate yourself & not immediately lash out at. — Jeffree Star (@JeffreeStar) May 28, 2022

In response to those calling him hypocritical for owning a cruelty-free beauty brand while actively farming yaks, Jeffree seemed to imply that vegan beauty is an outdated industry trend.

“I see no conflict. I chose to create a cosmetics line that doesnā€™t torture and test on animals,” he tweeted. “We all know Iā€™ve never claimed to be vegan, itā€™s about evolving in the beauty industry & moving past the old ways”.

Despite the discourse, Jeffree claims his first venture into selling yak meat went well, with “hundreds” of locals showing up to his farm’s warehouse sale with just 12 hours’ notice.

Jeffree Star said slaughtering his yaks is the 'Wyoming way' and showed a group of animals scheduled to be killed the next day

  • YouTuber Jeffree Star posted a new video to his channel on Monday.
  • Star defended his choice to slaughter yaks on his Wyoming ranch for food products.
  • Star Yak Ranch announced in May that it will sell packaged yak meat, which caused controversy.

Insider Today

YouTuber Jeffree Star has defended his choice to raise yaks for food products in a lengthy video showing viewers around his Wyoming ranch.

The YouTuber and cosmetics mogul uploaded a new video to his channel on Monday titled "The Truth About the Star Yak Ranch."  Star,  who moved to Casper, Wyoming, in December 2020 , showed followers a tour of Star Yak Ranch, including footage of him grooming the yaks, and addressed criticism around his decision to produce yak meat.

Star Yak Ranch  announced  in May that it would sell packaged yak meat through its online store and may open a shop in June . Star faced criticism from some fans who questioned if the yaks featured on his social media would be the ones slaughtered.

"I don't think city folk understand farming," Star said in the video. "There was a very big misconception when I announced that I was going to sell meat."

Near the end of the video, Star showed viewers where he keeps the yaks intended for slaughter. Star previously told Insider that his pet yaks have name tags and are kept in pastures on one part of his land. The yaks for slaughter have regular, non-named tags and are kept in a pasture near the back.

"Behind me, these animals are going to be slaughtered tomorrow," Star said, standing in front of a large pen where various yaks roamed. "They're not halter trained. They're not named and have normal tags. These yaks are grass-fed only. There are zero grains or treats given to our yaks that will become food."

Star said that since moving to Casper, he's embraced the farm-to-table lifestyle and was surprised some of his followers weren't familiar with it. Star also said he'd adopted the "Wyoming way" regarding his yaks, including breeding, keeping some yaks as pets, and planning to kill others for their meat.

"I had no idea people were uneducated about farming, where meat came from, or even the culture of hunting and providing food for your family," Star said. "It's a whole entire world, and living in Wyoming, I've definitely learned the Wyoming way."

He added: "It may seem a little interesting to some people ā€¦ that I am raising yaks for breeding, pets, and, yes, raising yaks for food."

Star then responded to critics who accused him of being dishonest about his business practices, which he denies.

Insider previously reported that Jeffree Star LLC filed to trademark  Star Yak Ranch in categories including butchering services, clothing, and edible pet treats in September 2021 . At the time, Star acknowledged complaints about selling yak meat on Snapchat after speculation among fans, saying just because he filed trademarks under those categories didn't mean he'd ever pursue them. Star, whose cosmetic line is vegan and cruelty-free, denied that meat products were initially part of his plan in the new video.

"There was never a plan to raise yaks for meat in the beginning. I know some people can't fathom that and want to say I'm a liar," Star said. "I did trademark the Star Yak Ranch for all sorts of things ā€” fiber, breeding, butchering, everything."

"I do sell a vegan cosmetic brand, but that has nothing to do with my yak ranch. That is a whole separate company," Star said.

"The thought of raising an animal in peace and happiness, from pasture to plate, is something you don't learn living in a big city like LA," Star  told  Insider.

Representatives for Star did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
