Talitha is a 1103 GT motor yacht owned since 2008 by Mark Getty . She was built in 1929–1930 by Krupp Germaniawerft at Kiel as Reveler for Russell Alger, chairman of the Packard Motor Car Company , and her subsequent owners include Robert Stigwood and Paul Getty . In 1942 she was purchased by the United States Navy and served as patrol gunboat USS Beaumont (PG-60) until 1946. The yacht has also carried the names Chalena , Carola , Elpetal , Jezebel and Talitha G.

With the smoothest of sheerlines, Talitha is the epitome of a classic motor yacht

If you had to conjure up a classic motor yacht from fundamental elements, you wouldn’t be far away from creating Talitha .

Those funnels, that stylishly flared clipper bow, the traditional counter stern – all that’s needed is Noel Coward in pressed whites and a reefer jacket, smoking a pipe and directing crew operations from the bridge.

Launched between the wars from the Krupp yard in Kiel to designs by Cox & Stephens of New York, after being commissioned by Russell Alger of the Packard Car Company, this superyacht has had a wandering life.

She started life with the suitably Jazz Age name of MV Reveler , soon passing into the hands of Charles McCann of the F. W. Woolworth retail firm (and renamed Chalena ).

She served as gunboat in World War II as USS Beaumont , with armaments mounted fore and aft, providing a rare Krupp contribution the Allied effort.

After the war she went back to private use as Elpital , until music and film producer and all-round empresario Robert Stigwood bought her and renamed her Jezebel. J.

Paul Getty bought her in 1988 and had her restored at Devonport under Jon Bannenberg’s guidance in 1993 (he added the second funnel to winning effect), and she has been immaculately maintained since.

The yacht is still owned by the Getty family and is used for family holidays. “We have a lot of fun on Talitha ,” Tara Getty told us in 2010.

The award winning 80m/262'6" classic yacht 'Talitha' (ex. Reveler) was built by Krupp Germaniawerft at their Kiel shipyard. Her interior is styled by English designer design house Bannenberg & Rowell and she was delivered to her owner in October 1930. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Bannenberg & Rowell and she was last refitted in 2008.

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3516 TA) 16-cylinder 1,428hp engines running at 1200rpm, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 14 knots with a range of up to 4,670 nautical miles from her 138,000 litre fuel tanks. Her water tanks store around 32,000 Litres of fresh water. She was built to Lloyds Register ✠ 100A1 YACHT classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.

A beautiful yacht with a very long history cruises Mallorca waters

From world war 2 veteran to luxury yacht owned by the getty family.

The beautiful yacht, Talitha, owned by the Getty family is cruising in Mallorca waters with her usual old-world elegance.

Talitha was designed by Cox & Stevens, New York and laid down in the German shipyard Krupp Germaniawerft at Kiel, as Yard No. 513, on 12 April 1929 for businessman Russell A Alger Jr., chairman of the Packard Motor Car Company. She measured 1,045 gross register tons and 444 net register tons.

Early service

Although launched for Russell Alger, he died before she was completed in 1930, and Reveler was laid up at the Gosport, Hampshire shipyard of Camper & Nicholson. In 1931 she was bought by Charles E. F. McCann, son-in-law of the founder of Woolworths stores, Frank Winfield Woolworth for some $375,000, and fitting-out was finally completed. Reveler was renamed Chalena , drawing on the first names of the owner and his wife, Helena, allocated Callsign MJPT and home-ported at New York. The yacht was sold in 1939 to Leon Mandel of Mandel Brothers department store in Chicago, and renamed Carola after his wife. Although based at Chicago, the yacht also cruised to Guatemala and the Galapagos Islands.

World War 2 service

On 23 January 1942, Carola was acquired by the United States Navy, then classified as a patrol gunboat and designated PG-60. After conversion by the Gibbs Gas Engine Company at Jacksonville, Florida, during which her interior was gutted to make way for a complement of 110 and her clipper bow removed, she was commissioned as USS Beaumont. She was armed with two 3"/50 dual purpose and two 40mm guns.

Following shakedown training, Beaumont sailed from Key West on 2 August 1942, escorting several motor vessels to the Panama Canal Zone. She departed from Balboa on 16 August, arriving at her new base, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on 2 September, where she was assigned to the Hawaiian Sea Frontier as a weather ship in support of the Pacific Fleet. Beaumont , alternating with USS San Bernardino (PG-59) (also a former motor yacht, Vanda ), collected meteorological information across an area of the Pacific between her base in Oahu and Midway Island.

Following the end of the war on 2 September 1945, Beaumont continued to provide weather data to forecasters, but on 5 November finally departed Pearl Harbor for San Francisco, where she arrived on six days later, on Armistice Day. She was decommissioned on 19 February 1946 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and struck from the navy list on 28 March. On 20 February 1947 Beaumont was transferred to the United States Maritime Commission for disposal.

Return to motor yacht

In February 1947 the former USS Beaumont renewed her connection with the F W Woolworth Company, as she was purchased by Norman B Woolworth, whose father, Frederick Woolworth, had established the British branch, F W Woolworth & Company7 Ltd. The yacht was renamed Elpetal , taken from the names of three of Woolworth's close friends, El iot Fox, Pe ter Walton and Tal bot Malcolm, and placed in the ownership of Elpetal Inc of New York. After reconditioning at Bath Iron Works, Maine, the yacht measured 1,043 gross register tons and 423 net register tons, with a length of 214 ft 3 in (65.30 m), breadth of 34 ft 1 in (10.39 m), and depth of 17 ft 0 in (5.18 m). In 1957 Elpetal was sold to the Greek shipowner Maris Embiricos, without change of name. He owned her through Concordia Navigation Company, which registered her at Monrovia, Liberia. In the 1970s, following the death of his wife, Embiricos laid up the yacht at his family island of Petali, where she subsequently deteriorated.

The Australian-British music entrepreneur and film producer Robert Stigwood purchased the yacht in August 1983, sending her to Malta for a refit lasting eight months, which included restoration of her clipper bow. She reappeared as Jezebel in 1984 and cruised widely. Later, the yacht was again laid up, in Lisbon, after developing mechanical problems, and was sold in 1993 to John Paul Getty Jr., who renamed her Talitha G in memory of his second wife. The yacht received a three-year refit in 1991–1994, under supervision of Jon Bannenberg at Devonport Management Limited. Since John Paul Getty Jr.'s death in 2008 the yacht, with the name modified to Talitha , has been owned by his son, Mark Getty.

A Century of Sea Change

Yachts have seen remarkable transformations in design and technology in the last 100 years. The lengths and shapes have changed decade by decade, from the mini-ocean liners of the 1920s to a more glamorous, fuller shape by the 1950s, eventually giving way to the layered wedding-cake construction that was so popular until about a decade ago. Now, just about anything goes, judging from the list below, with yachts boasting vertical bows being the most popular.

Technology also changed over the years, from steam engines to diesel to a growing list of hybrid diesel-electric powerplants. In the next five years, expect to see the first generation of superyachts with hydrogen- or methanol-powered fuel cells. What really hasn’t changed in the last century are owners’ desires to create superyachts that are unique, often clashing with the accepted design norms of the time.

Here are the 25 greatest superyachts from the last 100 years.

'Delphine' (257 Feet 9 Inches) 1923, U.S.A.

Delphine is the original 1920s oceangoing queen. American automobile magnate Horace Dodge commissioned the vessel, rumored to have once hosted former President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, and Michigan shipbuilding company Great Lakes Engineering Works built it in 1921. At 258 feet, Delphine remains the largest yacht ever built in the U.S. that is still in operation. She is also the largest active steam-driven yacht in existence. The two original 1,500 hp steam engines were re-equipped with two modern water-tube boilers during a 2003 refit, which provide 18 metric tons of steam per hour. Surviving a stint in the U.S. Navy during World War II, several fires, and multiple owners, Delphine is today fully restored to her 1920s glory, including original teak on the main deck and a revived Tiffany-designed interior.

'Talitha' (247 Feet) 1929, Germany

Talitha is one of the world’s first superyachts with an exceptional pedigree. F. Krupp built the vessel, which was originally penned by naval architects Cox & Stevens (leading designers of their day), in Kiel, Germany. First known as Reveler , Talitha was delivered in 1929 to Russell Algar, chairman of the Packard Car Company. A string of high-profile owners ensued, including John Paul Getty Jr. in the 1930s, son of one of the richest men in the world at the time. Getty commissioned an exterior and interior redesign by late superyacht designer Jon Bannenberg and, in 1993, a full reconstruction was completed at the Devonport shipyard in Plymouth, U.K. Regular refits since, including a 1999 newly installed wheelhouse, has made Talitha successful as a popular charter yacht.

' Malahne' (164 feet) 1937/2015, UK

Originally designed and built for the owner of renowned J-Class yacht Velsheda , classic motor yacht  Malahne enjoys a period interior designed by Scottish designer Guy Oliver (best known for styling London’s 10 Downing Street and Claridge’s). Original Art Deco features include Baccarat crystal, Willer porcelain, Georg Jensen silverware, and a lamp by 1930s designer Edgar Brandt. The yacht was once used as the production headquarters for Lawrence of Arabia and had luminaries such as Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, and Frank Sinatra walking the teak decks. In 2015, it underwent an extensive restoration at British shipyard Pendennis, which focused on maintaining its old-world glamour, including the yacht’s 25-foot custom-built Cockwells varnished Brazilian mahogany high-speed tender.

'Savarona' (446 Feet 9 Inches) 1931, Germany

Launched in 1931, Savarona was built for an heiress, enjoyed by royalty, and starred on the big screen. Built by Blohm & Voss for Emily Roebling Cadwalader, granddaughter of Brooklyn Bridge engineer John Roebling, 446-foot Savarona was featured in the German science-fiction film Gold . The Turkish government bought the vessel in 1938 and leased to Turkish businessman Kahraman Sadıkoğlu in 1989, who spent $45 million refurbishing the yacht. The original steam turbine engines were replaced with modern Caterpillar diesels, but the original 282-foot gold-trimmed staircase remains. Today, Savarona is the official presidential yacht of the Republic of Turkey.

'Shemara' (212 Feet, 2 Inches) 1938, Great Britain

Within a year of being built in 1938, 212-foot Shemara was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and used throughout World War II as a training vessel for anti-submarine warfare. Following the end of its service, the superyacht returned to her owner Bernard Docker, who entertained high society aboard its decks. Later in life, Shemara endured long periods of neglect until current owner Charles Dunstone acquired her in 2010, starting the long road back to refurbishment. Alongside much of the original teak and steel exterior features, Shemara is now fitted with a Rolls-Royce diesel-electric system, including two electrically driven azimuthing pods and a bow thruster.

'Christina O' (325 Feet) 1943/1954

Possibly one of the most eminent superyachts of all time, 325-foot Christina O didn’t begin life in the spotlight. Built in 1943 by Canadian Vickers, the vessel served as a frigate in World War II until 1954 when Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis bought it as war surplus for a mere $34,000. He spent $4 million on the refurbishment and then entertained the world’s elite on board, from Maria Callas and Grace Kelly to Jack and Jackie Kennedy, prior to Onassis marrying Jackie. Named after Aristotle’s daughter, Christina O enjoys a bronze-edged swimming pool with a mosaic dance floor that rises at the push of a button. The stools in Ari’s Bar retain the original leather upholstery.

'V2V' (ex-Carinthia VI) (137 feet, 7 inches) 1973, Germany

The first major yacht designed by Jon Bannenberg and a breakthrough build for German shipyard Lürssen, Carinthia VI is a star of the decades, commissioned by supermarket magnate Helmut Horten as the sixth yacht in his Carinthia fleet. However, Carinthia V was in fact the original version but sadly hit an uncharted rock on her maiden cruise in the Mediterranean and sank. Horten ordered an almost identical replacement (this time with extra watertight bulkheads) and used Carinthia VI until his death in 1987. In 2016, the yacht suffered severe damage in a fire. Its new owner then bought the yacht, undergoing an extensive rebuild in Turkey to its original Bannenberg lines that was completed in 2023 when the yacht was renamed V2V.

'La Sultana' (214 Feet 56 Inches) 1962, Bulgaria

A Bulgarian passenger ferry turned Soviet spy vessel, 214.5-foot La Sultana has a checkered past. Built in 1962 for operations in the Black Sea, it was absorbed into the Russian fleet during the Cold War and sent to the North Atlantic for unofficial reconnaissance on the United States and United Kingdom. In 2015, La Sultana  completed a seven-year refit, which saw the addition of a raised bow, seven guest cabins across six decks, and a diesel engine installed to drive the original propeller. Several spying instruments were also discovered, including a radioactivity detector and thick aluminum insulation across the entire boat. The original push button steering controls are still in operation.

'Highlander' (164 Feet) 1986, Netherlands

American media mogul Malcolm Forbes commissioned the 164-foot Highlander , built by Feadship to a Jon Bannenberg design with De Voogt naval architecture, in 1986. The yacht’s historic guest list reads like a who’s who of Hollywood stars, from Elizabeth Taylor to Robert De Niro. Two bathrooms in the master suite are offset by six guest cabins. Those lucky enough to charter this piece of yachting history also have use of Forbes’s original cigarette boat, now re-painted in jet black with a bold red stripe.

'Tatoosh' (303 feet) 2000, Germany

Built by Nobiskrug for cellular pioneer Craig McCaw, the 303-foot Tatoosh was more famously owned by the late Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, who bought the yacht off McCaw in 2001. Penned by German designer Claus Kusch—with input over the years from Jon Bannenberg, Terence Disdale, Martin Francis, and Stefano Pastrovich— Tatoosh is arguably one of the foremost explorer yachts of the modern age. TALITHA (ex TALITHA G) is a historic 80m (262' 5") classic motor yacht built in 1929 by Krupp and reconditioned by Devonport with interior design by Jon Bannenberg. She can accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 cabins in glorious luxury and elegant style.

A lot of attention to detail has been paid to her interior which is a combination of exquisite art-deco features and modern systems and functionality. It retains all the charm of the 1930s with a lovely salon and bar, open fireplaces, a luxurious library, antique bronze skylights, a card room, use of rich myrtle, mahogany and oak veneers as well as inlaid marquetry throughout. There is also a central elevator that serves all decks.

Her decks are large and unique and offer guests multiple opportunities for relaxing and getting together with loved ones. The funnel deck includes a secret viewing point and there is a cushioned bowsprit hammock as well as a lounging spot in the fan tail aft of the main deck. The upper deck offers guests a Jacuzzi aft of the alfresco dining area as well as a saloon and bar. The main deck also offers a sun lounging area and superb seating for all to relax.

Talitha remains the epitome of the classic motor yacht as she sails on past her 80th anniversary. Meticulously rebuilt in her entirety in 1994, she offers all the charm, polish and style of a classic London hotel. Incomparable standards of service with the very latest technology on board mean that superyacht Talitha offers her guests the perfect cruise.

TALITHA began life in 1927 on the drawing boards of the distinguished naval architects Cox & Stevens who were considered the leading yacht designers of their day. The yacht was launched in 1930 as MY REVELER. During 60 years, she changed name and owner on regular basis, until in 1993, after considerable reconstruction at the DML Devonport shipyard in Plymouth, UK, and with a design by Jon Bannenberg, she emerged under the present owners in her present incarnation as MY TALITHA G, then named TALITHA. Since then she has undergone numerous smaller refits, repairs and paint finishes, including a completely new wheelhouse installed in 1999 but her shape and interior layout is essentially unchanged in 12 years.

The current owners enjoy the yacht and have invested heavily in her, keeping her maintained structurally and cosmetically to a very high standard and ensuring that she is completely up to date with her navigation, communications and entertainment technology. Today, 75 years after her maiden launch, it’s fair to say that she’s in the best shape she’s ever been.

The Legendary Nabila   Yacht

The Nabila yacht was built at Benetti's shipyards in Viareggio and delivered in 1980. Measuring 281 feet and featuring 11 suites, a cinema and helipad, she was one of the world's largest yachts at the time and without doubt the most opulent. In 1983 the Nabila played an important role in the James Bond movie Never Say Never Again ; a few years later she was seized by the Sultan of Brunei and sold to Donald Trump.

She was bought by her current owner, Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, in 1991. The photo below shows her berthed at Antibes, France.

Adnan Khashoggi

The Nabila was commissioned in 1978 by billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. Named after Khashoggi's daughter, she was built at Benetti's shipyards in Viareggio and delivered in July 1980. Interior design was managed by Luigi Sturchio; the exterior was designed by English-Australian yacht designer Jon Bannenberg . The yacht was powered by twin Nohap Polar engines, giving her a cruising speed of 17 knots and a top speed of 20 knots.

The Nabila soon became known the world over for her sumptuous interiors, opulent suites and ostentatious luxury. The yacht spanned 5 five decks and featured every conceivable amenity. The 11 suites were paneled with chamois leather and bird's-eye maple; bathrooms were decked out in gold and onyx. Khashoggi's suite not only had its own saloon, office and sauna, it also had an elevator that went up to a private sun lounge.

The main saloon featured a waterfall, bronze bar, and grand piano gifted to Khashoggi's wife by Liberace. Other amenities included a 12-seat cinema, a disco, and a medical clinic with its own operating theatre. No one really knows how much the yacht cost to build, though some estimates give $35 million for the exterior and $50 million for the interiors.

It's a spectacle, a statement of astronomic wealth, a massive piece of equipment designed to arouse envy in those who behold it.

New York Magazine, 1988

The Nabila had a major impact on the global yachting scene and changed the industry in two significant ways. First, her flamboyant Saudi Arabian owner inspired other Middle Eastern businessmen to commission luxury yachts of their own. The trend began in the early 1980s and continues to this day. Second, her innovative design and extravagant interiors opened eyes to what could truly be achieved if money were no object.

Khashoggi and Benetti: Financial Ruin

Adnan Khashoggi often claimed to be the world's richest man and at times spent up to $250,000 a day to support his lifestyle. He started experiencing cash flow problems in the early 1980s, however, and towards the end of the decade the debt bubble burst. First to go was his private DC-8. The jet was grounded in 1986 when he defaulted on a $15 million loan. Following that, he defaulted on a $50 million loan issued by a Swiss bank and guaranteed by the Sultan of Brunei. The loan had been used to finance the construction of the Nabila .

The Sultan settled the loan himself, seized control of the Nabila and promptly put the yacht on the market. A handful of potential buyers took interest – one of whom was a New York real estate developer named Donald Trump.

The Nabila also took its toll on Benetti. The shipyard had seriously undervalued the costs of constructing the yacht and was hit hard by a series of penalty clauses added to the contract by Khashoggi's negotiators. The contract was overtly biased in Khashoggi's favor, and even allowed him to request changes during the final construction stages. Ultimately the yacht was built at a loss, and by 1985 Benetti was teetering on the verge of bankruptcy.

A young Italian named Paolo Vitelli stepped in. Sixteen years earlier Paolo had founded Azimut Yachts and built the company into a global brand. In a bid to rescue Benetti and take control of their Viagreggio shipyards, he invested every cent he had to bail out the ailing giant. It was a huge risk, but one that paid off. The new company became known as the Azimut Benetti Group and the rest, as they say, is history.

On the subject of history, remember Sean Connery's role in the James Bond movie, Never Say Never again ? The Nabila yacht is shown at bottom right.

The Trump Princess

The Sultan of Brunei's broker put the Nabila up for sale in 1987 with an asking price of $50 million. Donald Trump offered $15 million, the broker dropped to 32, Trump countered with 28, they settled on 30. A further million was taken off when Trump agreed not to keep the name Nabila and rename the yacht as he saw fit. Until this deal took place, the highest price paid for a secondhand yacht was $16 million.

Trump had actually had his eyes on the Nabila for quite a while. He'd been expanding his casino empire in Atlantic City and realized the Nabila could function both as a business tool and tourist attraction.

While I was building Farley Marina I was trying to get the boat because I knew she would blow everybody's mind.

Donald Trump

Trump renamed the yacht Trump Princess and spent $8.5 million having her refitted. The hull was repainted, the engines rebuilt and more than 3500 yards of chamois leather stripped out and replaced. As a finishing touch, the letter H on the helipad was swapped for a T. When done, the yacht set sail for America and cruised into New York on July 4 1988.

In April 1990 Trump opened his third gambling resort in Atlantic City, the $1 billion Taj Mahal. It was New Jersey's tallest building and the world's largest casino. But to survive it needed to take more than $1 million per day just to service its loans, and the market simply wasn't there. Trump's lenders intervened. They insisted he restructure his organization and sell the Trump Princess . Once again, Adnan Khashoggi's superyacht was up for sale.

Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal

Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bought the yacht in 1991 for $19 million. One of the world's richest men, Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal is founder, CEO and majority stock owner of the Kingdom Holding Company, a company with global interests that include financial services, media, agriculture and real estate. After taking possession of the Trump Princess , Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal renamed the yacht Kingdom 5KR , where 5 represents his lucky number and the letters K and R are the initials of his children. Since the acquisition, Kingdom 5KR is almost permanently berthed at Antibes in the south of France, though from time to time she ventures out to nearby Cannes and Monte Carlo.

The Kingdom 5KR is shown below. The exhaust funnels have been a distinctive feature of this yacht ever since she was launched. They are angled outwards to accommodate the helicopter.
