Got the mast up on the Merit 22 this weekend for the first time! We also built an a-frame ginpole system and used the main sheet blocks and forestay. It was much easier than we expected. We also got the pop top up. I had wondered why there were two table legs - we discovered that they are also pop top supports. With them in place the pop top was very stable.

Now for sailing stories... dj

Just picked up a Merit 22 this last weekend. Boat has been sitting for a while unused but was in pretty good condition. We've been going through it looking at all the parts to see where things hook up specifically to the model... everyone's pictures are a great help. Have to get the title papers and all settled then hopefully on the water pretty quick.

Welcome @Centex to the SBO Forum. Best of luck with your new boat. What motivated you to buy the Merit 22?

I had been looking around online for a better trailer for the boat I had (S2 7.0). Thinking maybe I could get a trailer either alone or maybe a derelict boat with a good trailer. Came across the Merit 22 that was in pretty good condition with a road worthy trailer at a decent price. The S2 is a good boat but she is going to need paint, trailer fix and old boat tlc. The Merit has all the features we were looking for in a sailboat plus it's more sail ready.

So cleaning out the boat this last weekend from the previous owners (always an interesting treasure hunt) and getting a feel for where things are located or supposed to be. No battery came with the boat only some very small battery terminals floating loose on what looks like a converted extension cord. Questions.... where do you keep your battery on the boat? , what size battery do you run? From what I've seen so far there is only one cabin light, AM/FM radio and of course the running lights for the boat to power. From the size of the terminals I've found looks like previous owner was running a very small battery.

Here is my A-Frame set-up for stepping the mast. I also use the main sheets vs a winch. Also made up some plexiglas companionway hatch covers.

I just make a large loop under the lower shrouds. As soon as the mast is up and forestay connected the loop falls down when you loosen the main halyard.

Merit of the Bay

Hey all, Just bought a Merit 22 last month. It’s been sitting in the slip at my community pier for 1.5 years. I’ve been slowly going through things and trying to figure stuff out. So many questions! 1) Best means for attaching the boom to the mast. 2) Are people using pendants or topping lifts? 3) Where is my bilge? 4) Am I missing the anchor locker, or does it not have one? I’m sure I’ll be posting more questions as I continue to go through the boat. I took it out under power yesterday for the first time. I can’t wait to get the sails up.

1. Mine has small swivel attached to the mast. 2. I use a topping lift for raising the boom and spinnaker pole. 3. No bilge I'm aware of, but access port forward of the keel. 4. No anchor locker, store in the lazzerette.

Thanks for the info! I have that same small swivel on the mast and a corresponding piece on the boom. Do you just use a shackle or pin to secure the connection?

I use a pin.

Another question… Is there a trick to getting the pop-top up? Seems like it should be pretty straightforward, but I can’t seem to get it.

It's heavy!!!!

RussC said: I've installed struts on a couple of my boats over the years and find them a very worthwhile addition. the Merit was a bit more challenging installation as it's not really practical to place them under the cover but by mounting them alongside they work great also. As you can see I also fabricated and replaced the crappy plastic slide rails with wood, but that should probably be done even if you'r not doing struts anyway. I used 60 lb struts 18.5" extended and 11.25 compressed. purchased on Amazon. View attachment 217639 View attachment 217640 Click to expand

I have to drop the mast on my Merit 22 by myself. Other times I had friends helping and a place to hang a block up high. But not this time. I have several options for making a gin pole, a 10 foot length of 2inch steel tube or a fir 2x4. But I don't know how to fasten it to the mast. How do you guys do it?

Review of Merit 22

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

DaggerBoard

The Merit 22 is equipped with a daggerboard keel. A daggerboard is a lifting keel that can be lowered and raised, allowing the boat to enter shallow waters as well.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.61 - 0.71 meter (2.00 - 2.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Merit 22 is about 89 kg/cm, alternatively 502 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 89 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 502 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 15m 2 (161 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

I have run across a Merit 22. There''s not much available on the boat. Boatcheck has a couple articles. Anyone know if there is a class organization on the web? What type of PHRF rating would it have in the south east US?

merit 22 sailboat

A buddy of mine owned and raced a Merit 22 at one time. Email me offline ([email protected]) and I will give you his email address. Also, I couldn''t find an M-22 website, but here is one for Merit 25''s. These folks might be able to help you with questions about the 22: http://www.well.com/user/pk/M25.html To give credit where credit is due, I found that info on the M-25 at www.goodoldboat.com. The Good Old Boat website is chock full of useful info. It also happens to be a terrific magazine.

merit22.org and the reason you missed it, is that it just opened for business. I am an owner and if you have specific questions fire at will. I am going to post some info on the .org site. Keith

Keith, Good start on the website. Be sure to tell Good Old Boat about it so that they can add it to their list of owner''s sites. That''s a great resource I use a lot when researching boats. I really like their magazine, too.

I own a Merit 22 and have had it for 2 seasons, I have sailed all of my life and love this boat. I crewed with my father on out 10m Pearson and am totally happy with the Merit. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions and comments about the boat. I have all of the original documentation including the owners manual and original sales brochure. Any one interested in any of this let me know by e-mail and I will send it off to you. Have fun.

KurtM Please keep your eyes out for someone selling for me. I have been looking for some time now. Thank you.

I have a Merit 22 for sale. Contact me if interested and I will provide photos and details.

granted, it's been six years, but . . . . . . is your merit 22 still for sale? do you know of any others? thanks for your response. sorry i can't email you instead--i haven't posted enough yet, apparently. dan richman seattle danielarichman(at)gmail.com

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

After nearly 2 months of refurbishing the Merit, and rebuilding a new trailer to fit it, the weather went unseasonably downhill about the day after it was ready for a test sail. but then, finally, we got a brief break on the same day as no other obligations and went for it. still not fully set up for ...

  4. Merit 22 as a pocket cruiser.

Generally, a lighter boat with variable draft and a light easily stepped mast will be easier to trailer sail on a regular basis. Generally a heavier boat will feel less tender, especially if the weight is in the keel. Just looking at the numbers on sailboat data the Merit 22 looks like it has a nice compromise that might make her a decent ...

Merit 22. For all practical purposes, the Merit is a raised-deck boat like the Tanzer, with the benefits associated with this configuration. Indeed, it's possible to sit comfortably below in spite of the boat's limited headroom. There is considerable well-proportioned open space in the 22's cabin, but (customizers, take note) it's as plain as ...

  8. Review of Merit 22

  10. Merit 22?

I'm looking really hard at a Merit 22 for our first boat. It seems in good shape and well-cared for, with a year-old full-batten mainsail, plus genoa and jib, good trailer and 4 hp Johnson outboard. We'd mainly sail mountain lakes in Montana, with maybe an annual vacation to the San Juans. I'm a little concerned that there weren't many of these ...

  12. Upgrade from Merit 22 to S2 7.9, worth it?

Member. I'm upgrading my Merit 22. Either to another, much better equipped Merit 22, or to an S2 7.9. I don't race, I semi-trailer sail, sometimes leaving it at the marina for a month or two. There's usually 2 of us on the boat, and sometimes 2 guests. I'd like to be able to take 3 guests, for a total of 5, but the cockpit on the Merit feels ...
