Nordship 430DS

  • December 9, 2012

This Danish deck saloon oozes quality and solidity from every mahogany grain, but how well does she sail? Chris Beeson had 24 hours to find out

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

What’s she like to sail? At over 14,000kg (31,000lb), the Nordship 430DS is the heaviest boat I’ve ever tested, but she felt nimble, gambolling along with a surprisingly lively motion. The helm felt wonderfully tight, so much so that we thought she had a direct link with universal joints instead of cable. With the rudder mounted well aft, she responds quickly and exactly. There was no question of losing control. The stats say she’s a very stately cruiser, similar to a Bowman 42 in performance terms, so in lighter winds you’ll need the big engine, but in the blow we experienced she felt fabulous off the wind, with the big main urging her on. The self-tacker becomes a bit of a liability off the wind, though you could barberhaul it into usefulness, but the sailing itself couldn’t have been simpler. The logic of placing all the sail control lines to the starboard winch seems questionable but in practice it worked well. The only issue, particular to our test boat, was that the yard had mistakenly mounted the clutches in such a way that the jib sheet, from the top clutch, would ride a turn if you didn’t hold it down as you trimmed, and generally fingers and electric winches don’t get on well. What’s she like in port and at anchor? The deck saloon table provides a perfectly finished mahogany focal point for dining while enjoying your surroundings, though I’d probably ask the yard to fit a window or hatch in the cockpit bulkhead to complete the panoramic view. The galley has plenty of stowage and the linear design works as well at anchor as it does at sea. Once you’ve finished your pudding you can repair to the evening saloon, a cosy, secluded nook, for a coffee and a digestif, and maybe settle down for a movie before retiring to your climate- controlled cabin. With the two en suite cabin layout, two couples can shower, dress and assemble around the saloon table, or, on a fine morning, in the cockpit for breakfast. The bathing platform is less accessible than it would be with a walk-through transom, but before cursing the design, ask yourself if you’d sacrifice the opulence of the aft cabin for the sake of a step or two. Her 2m draught rules out creek-crawling and a fair few anchorages, but she wouldn’t sail so well with shallower draught. Would she suit you and your crew? Yachties divide into two camps: romantics, who believe a boat must look pretty, and pragmatics, who believe a boat must work well. You will often find that those in the latter camp prefer deck saloons because, for them, it’s the space below and the view out that counts. I’m in the latter camp. Comfort and headroom matter to me, and I like to sit down in the warmth of a saloon and watch the sun set. Bent double in the bowels of a boat – however pretty – you could be in Tilbury or Tortola and it wouldn’t matter. So she’ll suit pragmatists – successful ones, as a well-specified version of this boat is not cheap – who like uncomplicated, non- tweaky, shorthanded cruising, probably in higher latitudes as there are boats better suited to Mediterranean living, perhaps the Moody 45DS or the Bénéteau Sense 43. Stowage down below is abundant (although not quite as generous as on deck) so you could cruise remote areas for extended periods and want for nothing. If excellent craftsmanship pleases you, you will revel in Nordship’s attention to detail and finish below. You have 380 litres of diesel but a generator, wind or otherwise, might be a useful.

History of Nordship Yachts

Nordship Yachts are a highly esteemed boat manufacturer, has a rich and vibrant history that dates back to the late 20th century. Originally founded in 1978 by Lars Buchwald in Lunderskov, Denmark, the company began with the construction of smaller, 28-foot luxury vessels. Over the years, Buchwald honed his boat-building expertise and expanded the brand's footprint by focusing on delivering high-quality, custom-build sailing yachts. His commitment to quality, precision and innovative design catapulted Nordship to the forefront of the boat building market, gaining significant recognition amongst boat enthusiasts across the globe.

Over the years, Nordship has grown significantly. In 2000, the company built a new factory in Lunderskov capable of housing larger yacht construction projects. The location is blessed with a long-established ship-building history, providing a rich, cultural backdrop for Nordship's operation. The strategic move to this new facility not only served as a symbolic milestone, but it also reflected the company's commitment to scaling its production capabilities while maintaining its rigorous quality standards.

Today, Nordship remains headquartered in Lunderskov, Denmark, and continues to thrive under the same guiding principles set forth by its founder. It has cultivated a loyal worldwide customer base, thanks to their unwavering dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. With unmatched mastery and an eye for nautical architectural beauty, Nordship's skilled artisans craft boat models between 38-56 feet long, each embodying the unique fusion of tradition, functionality and luxury that the brand is well-known for. They remain distinctive and revered, arguably one of the most prestigious names in the yacht manufacturing industry.

Dudinka: How a small town became an Arctic lifeline

A 'giraffe' in the port of Dudinka.

A 'giraffe' in the port of Dudinka.

The view of Dudinka.

The view of Dudinka.

The port of Dudinka is unique. It is the most northerly international sea port in Russia. It is both a sea and river port and it receives and sends cargo both along the River Yenisey (via Igarka and Krasnoyarsk) and by the Northern Sea Route (it is linked to Murmansk and Arkhangelsk via the Kara Sea and then eastwards to Asia).

The port of Dudinka.

The port of Dudinka.

The work of the port in Dudinka made possible the emergence of the northern industrial center that is Norilsk . For a big industrial city to grow in the middle of the wooded tundra, building materials, fuel and raw materials were needed. All of them were delivered through the port in Dudinka, at the time, a small settlement on the Yenisey.

Dudinka in 1970s.

Dudinka in 1970s.

It was Norillag prisoners who began building the port in 1935, but, in the 1950s, when the labor camp was closed, young specialists from all over the country began to volunteer to go there, as well as to Norilsk.

The port of Dudinka in 1970.

The port of Dudinka in 1970.

Twenty thousand people live in Dudinka today and one in 10 have a job linked to the port. We recently managed to visit this fascinating place.

How Dudinka Port operates

nordship yachts

The navigation season on the Yenisey is very brief: literally from mid-June to early October. During this time, apart from seafaring ships, the port also receives river vessels from Krasnoyarsk (about 2,000 km away by water) that bring fresh food and essential goods for the residents of Dudinka and Norilsk.

nordship yachts

As soon as the navigation is possible, fruit and vegetable stalls spring up in the streets and food prices in grocery stores drop drastically. Passenger vessels and large cruise ships also come to Dudinka along the Yenisey.

And when the Yenisey is icebound, Dudinka only receives and dispatches ice-class vessels traveling along the Northern Sea Route. They take away the products of the Norilsk Combine and bring the fuel and raw materials required for the operation of industrial plants.

The port during the icebound, 1977.

The port during the icebound, 1977.

The port operates every day except for a couple of weeks a year – it is the only port in the world that is flooded during the spring high water. The ice begins to break up on the Yenisey at the end of May. It looks very impressive: Enormous blocks of ice race past in the water. People from all over the area come to witness the spectacle!

But, workers at the port have no time to admire the scene. For the duration of the flooding caused by the spring thaw, the port stops receiving and sending cargo and workers move the cranes to special holding areas where they remain for the duration of the high water.

Why winter is better than summer for the port

More than 50 ships call at Dudinka during the navigation season. On the day we visited, 11 vessels were waiting to be unloaded – one-to-two days' work, as we were told.

The ‘Norilskiy Nickel’ ship.

The ‘Norilskiy Nickel’ ship.

We even managed to climb aboard the ‘Norilskiy Nickel’ (ice class 7) container ship and talk to its captain.

nordship yachts

"Our ship can cope with ice up to two meters high. We don't go straight ahead, however, but seek out cracks which are easier to negotiate," according to Captain Andrei Shlapak. "The thing is that, in winter, the River Yenisey has ‘pack ice’ – in other words, ice dating back years – which can also move around by itself."

Andrei Shlapak.

Andrei Shlapak.

In order to reduce the time and cost of voyages, a nuclear-powered icebreaker is periodically summoned. It cuts "pack ice channels", which other ships can follow to reach the sea. Of course, they get clogged up during falls of snow and sailors thus prefer to work in frosty and snowless weather. "On reaching floating ice, we continue on our way independently," the captain says.

The recreation room.

The recreation room.

Andrei told us that storms frequently occur in the Northern seas and that the weather in the second half of September is particularly dangerous, as the storms are accompanied by icing. "When that happens, we yearn for the start of sea ice, because when we sail in ice, the ship doesn't get tossed around," he says.

Gym aboad the ship.

The ‘Norilskiy Nickel’ container ship's usual destinations are Murmansk and Arkhangelsk, but there are also voyages to China: The Northern Sea Route is the shortest distance from Europe to Asia. "It turns out that you can get from here to China in just two weeks in summer," the captain says. Naturally, the times will be extended in the ice season.

nordship yachts

The crew spend five days at sea on average, working in shifts lasting two months in all and rotating with another crew.

nordship yachts

The ship's interior proved to be fairly spacious, modern and even, in its own way, comfortable. There is a recreation room with sofa, TV and ping-pong table, a small gym and a sauna. But, we were won over most of all by the abundance of potted flowers cultivated by the seamen. The captain told us that many of the crew on board were keen on keeping plants and he tried to water them at the right time.

Capital of Taymyr

nordship yachts

Unlike Norilsk, Dudinka is an old settlement. It was founded in 1667 as winter quarters by a "strelets" (i.e. solder) named Ivan Sorokin from the trading town of Mangazeya , when, together with a small detachment, he set off to collect a tax known as ‘yasak’ (a tax paid in furs).

Dudinka youth.

Dudinka youth.

Today, Dudinka is the administrative center of the Taymyrsky Dolgano-Nenetsky District of Krasnoyarsk Territory. The district is vast, exceeding any European country in area, but actually just 30,000 people live on the Taymyr Peninsula, with two-thirds of them in Dudinka (Norilsk is classified as a separate district). Other centers of population are Khatanga, Dikson and Karaul, which are scattered over distances of hundreds of kilometers from each other.

The ice arena.

When you arrive in Dudinka, you don't see a provincial town, but a real capital. It has everything: stores, a cinema, delivery pick-up points and even an ice rink, the only one in the world located inside the Arctic Circle! Often, international curling competitions are held in the city.

nordship yachts

Despite Dudinka's rich history, no old houses have survived. A large proportion of residential districts are composed of Soviet "panelki" (panel-built apartment blocks) built on piled platforms driven into the permafrost. The buildings are painted in bright colors, in order to lift people's spirits during the long winter.

When the weather is fine, local residents spend time in Aviatorov Square, where an An-24 aircraft – which used to take people to Krasnoyarsk, Khatanga and Dikson 20 years ago – is displayed.

Aside from Russians, who make up more than half the population of Taymyr, representatives of five Northern indigenous peoples live there: Dolgans, Nenets, Nganasans, Evenks and Enets. The 'Taymyr' weekly newspaper comes out in Dudinka with news not just in Russian, but also in these Northern languages.

Inside the museum.

There is also a museum of local history, one of the biggest and most interesting of its kind in the Arctic. It houses 90,000 of the most varied exhibits.

The displays include the everyday objects that helped the ancestors of today's inhabitants of Taymyr to survive in this harsh land, as well as shamanic ritual drums and masks.

One floor is dedicated to the Soviet-era history of Taymyr and the Arctic researchers and explorers of that period. Apart from all that, a mammoth by the name of ‘Zhenya’ can be viewed there – it is estimated to be around 45,000 years old! Scientists also discovered marks left by man-made tools on its carcass. Which means that humans were living in the Arctic much earlier than previously thought.

The distance from Dudinka to Norilsk is 90 km through wooded tundra, swamps and permafrost. Neither of the two cities has land links with other regions of Russia. But they are connected to each other by a railway line, one of the most northerly in the world. It was built in 1937 and, until the end of the 1990s, perfectly ordinary suburban electric trains ran on it. Today, it is only used for freight. We will look at it in detail in a forthcoming article. Stay tuned!

570 DS Custom Line

The Nordship 570 DS can be custom built to be your perfect long-distance offshore deck saloon yacht. Whether you sail as a couple, with a professional skipper and crew, perhaps you would like to offer skippered charters or sail with your family and friends, the 570 DS can offer personalisation, quality and comfort in abundance. We know how to personalise yachts for their owners, we have been custom-building for decades and with a 17m hull, we can offer you more space than ever before. The cockpit is large and as well as being practically laid out to make it easy to sail a yacht of this size, and the forward seating provides a comfortable al fresco dining area for up to 10 guests.

The 570 DS has been designed to be easy to handle and simple to sail. Although she is 57ft (17m) she can be sailed like a yacht 20ft smaller using modern, well-proven sail handling technology. She is designed with twin rudders to give her a great feel on the helm, being easy to steer and responsive, making her enjoyable to the helm. Should you prefer a rudder with a skeg, or a single spade rudder, you can have that instead. We also offer several different keel configurations depending on your cruising aspirations. No part of the yacht can’t be customised. We have added hull windows, extended cockpits and converted our yachts from twin wheels to single wheel for our owners.

A few steps down, through the companionway, the raised deck saloon offers any number of layouts to takes advantage of the panoramic views through the large wraparound windows. This area could be devoted to entertaining and relaxation, creating a vast social space to be used whatever the weather. Alternatively, this can be the focus of life on board with the galley located here to make the most of social living and entertaining. If you’d rather the galley were less visible and more usable while ocean cruising then it can be located in the spacious walkway between the saloon and the sumptuous full-beam owner's suite aft. If, as the owner, you’d prefer more privacy and less noise from those in the galley, then it can be located forward of the saloon. We don’t tell you where your galley should be, we believe you should be able to choose the location you want.

We don’t tell you how many berths there should be, or where you should locate them. As always, we are on hand to guide and advise you how to get the best from the space available but you can choose to have king- or queen-sized double berths, vee, twin, bunk or Pullman single berths. Perhaps an office or study with an occasional Pullman berth would suit your needs. You can have crew cabins, navigation nooks, secluded snugs or dainty dinettes.

You can come to us with a complete idea or just some thoughts about how you’d like your new deck saloon yacht to serve you and we can do the rest. We can incorporate your ideas from a lifetime of cruising, or you can take our suggestions and adapt them.

Design: Buchwald/Borghegn

The process

Discover your needs.

You will probably have some ideas about what you want in and from your new Nordship. Start by making a list, whether it’s on paper or in note form on your phone and keep adding items as you think of them. Take time to think about what you want your yacht to achieve, a list of the things you must have, and those you’d like to have. Also consider what you do not want. Keep going back to the list and see what priority you hold for your ideas. The list can be as long or as short as you want it to be. We will be led by you, but our experience and knowledge are at your disposal. Also, add to the list any questions you have, anything you’re uncertain of about.

Meeting at the yard

Once you have your list and you’re happy with it, we’d like to invite you to our yard in Lunderskov, Denmark to meet with our designers and the project manager, as well as meet the people who will be building your new yacht. While you’re with us we’ll discuss your list, answer your questions and use this information to suggest some suitable sizes, styles and designs for your new yacht. We are here to help, suggest and guide you to ensure you make the right decisions. You may want something specific on board, we’ll use our decades of design and boatbuilding experience to work towards a solution you are happy with. Any decision is always yours. Once you are happy and we have everything we need, we’ll ask for a small deposit to proceed to the sketching stage.

From our meeting in Lunderskov, we’ll have a good idea of how best to fully realise your ideas in a Nordship. Our designers will work on sketches of your new boat, using the design parameters you have set us, putting onto paper ideas of what you want your new yacht to achieve. If, after our initial meeting, you have changed your vision or priorities, we can incorporate these in the sketches with enough notice. The sketches will show the main lines of the exterior, interior layout options, and styling ideas of your new Nordship.

Once we are happy with the sketches we’ll meet with you and present them. We’ll discuss the sketches in detail, work towards improving what you like and altering anything about the design that you would like us to change. At this stage, you can still make changes that can be incorporated into the final design. Also, during this meeting we’ll discuss what the basic specification of your yacht will be, as well as the equipment you’d like on board, either at launch or in the future. This will help us work toward an efficient hull shape with the correct load-bearing capacity.

Price and delivery

With the sketches approved and your ideas on paper, you’ll have a clear vision of how your new yacht will look. We’ll also have the specific layout you want from your new yacht, as well as her size. Knowing these enables us to give you both an estimate of the price and a delivery schedule for your new Nordship.

Once you have accepted the price and delivery schedule, we’ll present you with the contract. The contact will be between you and Nordship. Once we’ve received the signed contract we can start with the creation of your new and unique yacht.

Technical drawings

With the contract signed, our team of experienced designers will start creating the construction drawings and doing the structural calculations that are needed to make the more detailed design plans that our craftsmen will work from. You’ll be able to see the construction drawings at any point to ensure you are getting exactly what you want.

Construction

This is where your dream becomes a reality. Throughout the build process we will stay in close contact with you, sending you photographs of the build, discussing details. We know through our experience of building custom yachts that ideas can evolve, so we keep you informed at every step of the process. You are also welcome to visit the yard at any point during the build process to see and discuss the project with our team.

The day we’ve all been working towards has arrived; when you take delivery of your new Nordship Custom Line yacht. We will give you a thorough handover of your yacht, go through all of the yacht’s systems and service points, and explain best practice for things like reefing and sail handling as well as for the mechanical aspects of your yacht. We’ll make sure you’re completely satisfied before leaving you to spend your first night on board. No doubt in the morning you’ll have more questions and, as always, we are here to help you in any way we can.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you whether you are looking for the right launch, winter storage of your motor boat or maintenance and repair by our specialized craftsman
