Thousand Island Yacht Club - Comfort Island - 1000 Islands

The Thousand Island Yacht Club On Welcome Island – Est. 1896

The Thousand Island Yacht Club’s home on Welcome Island began in 1895, when W. C. Browning , a director of the then named Thousand Island Club and head of the St. Lawrence River Real Estate Association, purchased Welcome Island with the intention of building a casino for the club.   At the time, many of the islands were being purchased for private purposes and Browning secured the five-acre island prior to the club’s approval in what was estimated to cost $50,000 for improvements and construction.

Thousand Island Club House

Welcome Island, for years the summer home for Seth Pope who built many of the palatial cottages during the era, is conveniently located amongst many of the earliest pioneers’ islands including St. Elmo , owned by N. W. Hunt , Nobby Island , owned by H. R. Heath , Dewey/Friendly Island , owned by E. W. Dewey , and George Pullman ’s Castle Rest on Pullman Island.

Members of the St. Lawrence River (later Thousand Island) Real Estate Association included William C. Browning of Hopewell Hall , with directors including Dewey, Browning, Charles G. Emery of Emery’s Castle and the New Frontenac , George C. Boldt of Boldt’s Castle , James H. Oliphant of Neh-Mahbin , E. R. Holden of Thousand Island Park, Charles L. Hudson, George Pullman of Castle Rest and Hon. James C. Spencer of Manhattan Island . The association originally eyed a point just north of the Thousand Island House, but one of the Crossmons who owned it refused to part with it.

Nobby Island in foreground, Thousand Island Yacht Club in background

By late fall 1895, work had commenced on the new clubhouse with a large staff of men.   Club functions were held on Welcome Island in temporary quarters through the duration of construction with the new clubhouse’s dedication occurring in early July of 1897.

The following year, the Thousand Island Club applied to have its name formally changed to “Thousand Island Yacht Club.”   James Spencer, the association’s vice president, also acted as its attorney during the petition process.

Thousand Island Yacht Club, Welcome Island

At the time, the Thousand Island Yacht Club was one of the most prestigious clubs in the United States with leading figures from a variety of backgrounds which represented a who’s who of the Thousand Island’s golden era.  Many of those same people would serve as Commodore of the club over the years.

After 45 years, the decision was made to close the Thousand Island Yacht Club on Welcome Island in 1941.   As reported in the Watertown Daily Times on June 2 by David F. Lane—

With the election of Nils S. Johanneson, prominent New York importer of Scandinavian chemical pulps, as commodore, the historic Thousand Island Yacht Club at its annual meeting held at the Barclay hotel in New York City last week decided to close its building in the Alexandria Bay region of the Thousand Islands.   It will probably be closed permanently, it was said.   The structure will remain intact, however, and the club, one of the most noted social organizations of its kind in the country will continue to function, transferring its activities to the picturesque home of the Thousand Islands Country club owned by Edward J. Noble , on Wellesley Island.   The Country club will be opened June 20. While the Yacht club and the Country club will maintain separate entities as to officers and administration there will be a bringing together of their activities in a way, in that the members and patrons of each will enjoy the benefits of common quarters.

Thousand Island Club House

The Yacht Club continued operations from its new headquarters, at least before it partially sunk, aboard Mr. Noble’s large, two-deck houseboat “La Duchesse” anchored at the Country Club slip.   The boat was built for George Boldt at a cost of $225,000 but acquired by Noble, a former commodore himself, when he purchased the Boldt estate.

Noble disposed of the boat to Andrew McNally prior to its partial sinking.   Nils S. Johanneson was the husband of Clover Boldt , daughter of George, who along with Noble, were previously elected Commodore of the Yacht Club as well.

La Duchesse

As for the Thousand Island Yacht Clubhouse, it was purchased via unpaid back taxes totalling $3,791.50 and razed in late 1945 by Albert F. Madlener of Chicago. According to the Watertown Daily Times Dec. 29, 1945 article—

Mr. Maldener is the son-in-law of the late Gov. and Mrs. ( Florence Pullman Lowden) Frank O. Lowden of Illinois, and Mrs. Madlener is thus the granddaughter of George M. Pullman, internationally known as the sleeping-car magnate, for Mrs. Madlener’s mother was the former Miss Florence Pullman before her marriage to Mr. Lowden Aug. 29, 1896. The site of the Thousand Islands Yacht club, for so many seasons brilliantly enlivened by yachtsmen, adjoins Pullman Island, upon which stands the magnificent and dignified Pullman summer home, “Castle Rest.”

Frank Lowden and Florence continued the Pullman family tradition of visiting Castle Rest for years after the deaths of George and Harriet Pullman.

La Duchesse interior

Incidentally, Harriet Pullman once had a large mansion built in Washington, D. C., for her son-in-law Frank and daughter Florence in support of Lowden’s political ambitions while serving as a Representative.  Located a short distance from the white house, the 64-room mansion was barely used before Frank decided to take up farming back in Illinois for several years before re-entering politics and winning the race for Governor in his home state.

The mansion was sold just a couple of years after its completion and became home to the Russian Embassy for a number of years before becoming home to the Russian Ambassador’s residence.

Candock Riverbay

OUR MISSION

Develop, produce and commercialize docks and modular floating systems that are adapted to the needs of our clients  all over the world, while participating in our partner’s development!

20 years of continuous growth and success.  Our company is now known as a world leader in engineering, manufacturing, distributing and installing modular floating docks.  And it’s only the beginning!

CANDOCK RIVERBAY

Candock Riverbay is located in the beautiful Thousand Islands, in Chippewa Bay, NY, directly on the St. Lawrence River.  We are a family owned and operated business that has been in the cottage rental and marina industry for over a decade.

As owners of residential and commercial waterfront properties, we have extensive experience with many different types of permanent and floating docks.  After dealing with permanent docks that were extremely expensive as well as uncomfortable to get on and off with season water level changes and floating wood docks that did not hold up to the elements and needed constant maintenance and repair, we began searching for alternative docking solutions.  We wanted a dock that was maintenance free with no boards to seal, stain or rot, adjusted with changing water levels, easily assembled, stable, aesthetically appealing and ecologically friendly.  After walking on a section of a Candock, we knew we had finally found what we were looking for!  Best of all, because of its modular nature, if you want to make your dock wider or longer or change configurations, you can do so easily.

As a distributor and installer of Candock, we are proud to sell a product that we not only believe in, but have personally invested in.  Whether you are looking for a small floating dock for your residence or have a large scale commercial job, we would enjoy the chance to talk about your project and see if we can provide a docking solution that would fit all your needs.  From anchoring your dock, to ramps, to low freeboard docks and PWC ports, Candock has solutions to make the most out of your waterfront.

Thousand Islands Cup 2020

By: john kunz.

The third annual Thousand Islands Cup was held on August 22nd. This classic race boat regatta takes competitors over part of the Chippewa Yacht Club’s 1905 Gold Cup course. Once again, this year, the participants were treated to near perfect weather. It was a warm sunny day with next to no wind. The starting line was set-up off the northwest end of Oak Island just inside the infamous Triangle Shoal.

The original 1905 course called for the racers to follow an oval course that went around the Cedar Island Group and Ironsides Island. The Thousand Islands Cup Committee has shortened the course to a lap around Cedar and Scow Islands. This is about half the distance of the original.

The races were set up to follow the same format as last year. All boats took a practice lap. This was followed by a class for Gar Wood Speedster. Last year's champion, White Knuckles , was unable to defend her title this year. She was replaced by Janka III, a CYC favorite skippered by Susie Wood. Janka III is a Gar Wood double cockpit. The boat was purchased by Susie’s grandmother in 1941 from Fitzgerald & Lee.

The Open class, for all competitors, followed the Speedsters. The pandemic took a heavy toll on this class. Bob Banister’s new Baby Gar Speakeasy did not make it. This twin big block monster was sure to challenge Jim Hendler’s La Te Da . Jim has won the first two Thousand Islands Cups. Keith Kipp’s Lady Shores opted not to cross the Border. Don Price and Elusive were unable to make it at the last minute. Adding insult to injury, La Te Da developed engine problems just days before the race. Jim was able to put her on display at the Oak Island docks, but he was unable to defend the title.

With last year’s winners out, there were lots of questions going into the start. Joe McBride entered his two Gar Wood Speedsters, Thomas and Rosemary. Joe named these boats after his beloved Grandparents. Ben Wright entered Miss Rebecca and Chris Wood decided to run his 1911 Leyare Launch Curlew . Some of you wooden boat junkies might recall that the Leyare Boat Works in Ogdensburg built Chip and Chip II, two of the Chippewa Yacht Club’s earliest Gold Cup winners. Leyare also built the famous Thousand Islands number boats that held many races after the Gold Cup moved on to Detroit. Curlew is affectionately referred to as the “Pride of Chippewa.” Jay Benton’s Scairt Cat rounded out the field.

The racing was supposed to start at 11am, but apparently Murphy (and his law) had found a temporary spot on the Thousand Islands Cup Race Committee. One of the competitor’s escort boat malfunctioned on the way to Oak Island. This produced a 20 minute delay. Ryan Conroy’s drone experienced heavy interference and was unable to fly. In spite of these problems, an impressive spectator fleet had formed in front of Oak on the channel side of the starting line.

The floatilla contained boats from as far away as Wellesley Island. The diversity of the boats was noteworthy, everything from a plastic kayak to a Riva were right there on the water. It was a fantastic sight to see.  Finally at about 11:30 am, Commodore Ret. Hugh Quarrier sent the racers off on the practice lap with a blast from his brass canon.

Jay Benton’s Reveau Scairt Cat jumped off the line and took an impressive lead. Janka III, Miss Rebecca and the speedsters roared after him. Scairt Cat easily took the practice lap, which did not go without incident. Unknown to the racers, there was a group of 10 to 15 kayakers very close to the course near Cedar Island. As the racers approached the nervous kayak fleet began waving their paddles in the air.

Joe McBride won the speedster class in Rosemary . Thomas took second and Janka III came in third. The Janka III was experiencing some engine difficulties and returned to home port on Owatonna Island in lieu of running in the open class. Anything mechanical is subject to failure and vintage engines are no exception. Janka III is an exquisite Gar Wood. She was a delight to behold under the sweet summer sun.

The canon sent off the open class. Scairt Cat leapt out of the water. The speedsters and Miss Rebecca throttled up. Suddenly, Scairt Cat sunk back into the water. Joe McBride hammered his throttle and sped into the lead. Scairt Cat jumped back on plane, but, then stalled for good. Scairt  Cat is a boat we are sure to see again. The motor is a Jay Benton customer project. It uses a 90hp Mercury motor with a 100hp power head and 120hp carburetors.

Joe was able to win both classes in 2020. He dedicated the wins to the memory of our late racing colleague Dr. Louis Benton. Dr. Benton competed in the first two Thousand Islands Cups in his Clarion Gold Cup Racer Curvaceous. Dr. Benton was an avid tennis player and yachtsman. He was a past Director, Vice Commodore and Commodore of the Chippewa Yacht Club and a true Thousand Islands gentleman.
