Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard looks forward to welcoming the 52 Super Series fleet in June and July in 2024!

The Rolex TP52 World Championship will take place in the waters off Newport, Rhode Island from July 15-20, 2024. For more information, visit: 52superseries.com

The 52 SUPER SERIES was established in 2012 and quickly became renowned as the world’s leading grand prix monohull yacht racing circuit. 2022 saw the tenth anniversary celebrations back in Barcelona where it all began at the Trofeo Conde de Godo regatta in May 2012.

The 52 SUPER SERIES was developed as an initiative by three key stakeholders, respectively the owners of Quantum Racing , Azzurra and Rán Racing who enjoyed their racing in the TP52 so much, and could see a future in which the owners dictated the direction of the 52 SUPER SERIES; embracing all that they had enjoyed about the class and making racing for like-minded individuals and crews available in locations and venues enjoyed by all. Now the circuit usually consists of five regattas per season in Europe with regular early year events in the USA.

Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard looks forward to welcoming to the 52 Super Series teams as the host marina for the XS 52 Super Series Newport Trophy Regatta in June and the Rolex TP52 World Championship 2024 in July.

IMOCA Route

IMOCA - The Ocean Race 2022-23 visits nine iconic international cities over the six-month period, starting from Alicante, Spain in January 2023 and finishing in Genova, Italy at the end of June.

The start of the 14th edition of The Ocean Race will follow the Reyes holiday period in Spain, and sees the foiling IMOCA fleet departing on a 32,000 nautical mile (60,000 km) race around the world.

The first leg is a 1,900 nautical mile sprint from Alicante to Cabo Verde, the first time the Race has stopped at the African archipelago. Historically, the fleet has sailed past the islands as they head south down the Atlantic. Whilst in Cabo Verde, The Ocean Race will take part in its famed Ocean Week, with a focus on local and international sustainability issues.

Leg 2 will start on 25 January and see the fleet racing across the equator, south to Cape Town, the 12th time the Race has stopped in the southern tip of Africa, making it the most visited stopover in this edition of the event. This will also be the first of three ‘haul-out’ stops, where the boats will be lifted from the water for maintenance.

Next up is a record-breaking leg - the longest racing distance in the 50-year history of the event - a 12,750 nautical mile, one-month marathon to Itajaí, Brazil.

yacht racing newport ri

In the finest tradition of The Ocean Race, this leg takes the IMOCA sailors down to the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties of the Southern Ocean. Antarctica is to the right and the fleet will need to pass all three great southern Capes - the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, and Cape Horn - to port, without stopping, for the first time.

There will be another extended, haul-out stopover in Itajaí, Brazil, following this epic southern leg before racing resumes heading north, through the doldrums, across the equator and up to Newport, Rhode Island, on the east coast of the United States.

From there, the Race returns to Europe, with a transatlantic leg to Aarhus, Denmark, followed by a Fly-By of Kiel, Germany en route to a stop in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Then, it’s the final offshore leg - the Grand Finale - to Genova, Italy, for a Mediterranean finish to the race.

NEWPORT RI, 2024 SAILING EVENTS:

Ocean Race global marathon starts Sunday, what you can expect when it reaches Newport

Editor's note: The following is a story provided to The Daily News by Sail Newport as part of a partnership ahead of the 2023 Ocean Race.

NEWPORT — Considered the most demanding sailing race on the planet, crews onboard high-performance racing vessels in The Ocean Race will circumnavigate the globe in six months, making stops in eight cities worldwide including Newport.

The Ocean Race is an epic test of sailing skill, tactical decisions, navigation, boat handling and extreme mental and physical challenges. Before reaching the shores of the U.S., in May, the sailors will have to conquer 28,650 nautical miles (approximately 89% of the route) of open ocean racing between Alicante, Spain to, Cabo Verde, Cape Town, and through the icy depths of the ferocious Southern Ocean up to Brazil.

Rhode Island-based team  11th Hour Racing Team  will participate onboard the high-tech IMOCA 60. Charlie Enright, of Bristol, is the skipper of "Malama." Also, Newporter Amory Ross will be onboard as the embedded reporter among other crew members.

What's happening in Newport during Ocean Race stopover

A nine-day festival between May 11 and 21 begins at Fort Adams State Park and is hosted by Sail Newport , the state of Rhode Island, and 11th Hour Racing. The boats are expected to arrive in Newport from Itajai, Brazil, on or close to May 10.

The "Ocean Live Park" is accessible to the public every day.  Visitors will be able to see the race boats up close at the dock, learn about the global race, and see the oceans of the world through the eyes of the crews.

The Ocean Live Park includes activities for all ages. Guests will be able to tour team bases; Try Sailing! onboard a Sail Newport J/22, participate in an immersive interactive ocean exhibit on ocean stewardship, and enjoy music, food, children's activities, special events, entertainment, and cocktail cafes.

The Ocean Race: Sail Newport fosters the sport of sailing for all

The In-port racing is a thrilling spectator opportunity off the shore of Fort Adams State Park. Racing takes place Thursday, Friday and Saturday. May 18, 19 and 20. On Sunday, May 21, a send-off ceremony includes a dock-out show, a sailor parade, and entertainment. At 2 p.m., the fleet will take a "goodbye" sail in the bay as they jostle their positions for the trans-Atlantic race leg start to Aarhus, Denmark.

The May event will be the third consecutive stopover of the global race in Rhode Island after visits in 2015 and 2018. An average of over 100,000 spectators came to see the racing and the village, with a total economic impact of approximately $70 million statewide, benefitting hotels, restaurants, transportation and other tourism services

The Ocean Race aims to be the first climate-positive international sporting event. Organizers aim to support this goal by being a zero-waste event with a minimal carbon footprint. Educational opportunities will highlight climate solutions, restoration, and blue technology, with learning activities for all ages. The Newport Stopover will showcase the intersection of sailing and sustainability as led by its co-host and partner, 11th Hour Racing.

Departing from the iconic Charleston, South Carolina teams will make their way north 704-nautical miles to Newport, Rhode Island. The course will take them through the Gulf Stream which always adds a little spice and speed to this leg.

Leg 1 - Charleston - Newport May 25 - 12pm

For the first time since 2014, the Atlantic Cup returns to its roots in Newport, Rhode Island. Considered by many to be the sailing capital of the USA, it's a destination rooted in history. The second leg will take competitors 360-nautical miles north to Portland, Maine.

Leg 2 - Newport - Portland June 1 - 12pm

Class40 sailboats racing on Narragansett Bay

Set amongst beautiful coastline and picturesque lighthouses, Portland Maine is a stunning sailing destination and perfect backdrop for the third and final leg of the Atlantic Cup. New for 2024, this portion of the race will be made up of two days of coastal racing to further challenge the teams and their all-around skills.

Leg 3 - Coastal Series in Portland June 5 & 6

The Atlantic Cup started in 2011 as a way to showcase double-handed sailing the USA. From its small origins, the Atlantic Cup grew to a multi-stage race that spans the east coast of the U.S.

The Atlantic Cup challenges the sailors in multiple ways. The two offshore legs will be sailed double handed (two people). The first leg of the race is a long offshore leg covering 704 nautical miles(3+ days). The second leg will be a shorter 350 nautical mile (2+ days) offshore sprint. Both the offshore legs will demand high physical input and provide little rest.  The third leg will force the sailors to switch to shorter distance coastal races.

The Ocean Race to Stop in Newport Again

  • By The Ocean Race
  • Updated: March 10, 2020

R.I.’s Pell Bridge

Sail Newport and The Ocean Race announced today that for the third consecutive edition of the competition, The Ocean Race will make its only North American stopover in Newport, Rhode Island, in the spring of 2022.

The Rhode Island stopover will be one of ten stops during the eight-month 38,000 nautical-mile race around the world, which begins in Alicante, Spain, in October of 2021 and finishes in Genoa, Italy in June of 2022.

“This is terrific news for our state, again bringing global attention to Newport and Rhode Island as premier tourist destinations and promising to generate tens of millions of dollars in spending and economic impact,” says Governor Gina M. Raimondo, Governor of the State of Rhode Island.

“I am grateful that The Ocean Race recognizes the value of coming back to the Ocean State and equally grateful to our partner and the official event host, Sail Newport, which has worked hard to ensure this successful event returns,” she adds.

Sail Newport, Rhode Island’s Public Sailing Center, will organize the event and Executive Director Brad Read says, “This is the pinnacle event of the sport of ocean racing. These athletes are spending 24 hours a day for weeks on end transiting oceans in storms and calms and as a community we have the privilege of welcoming them to the only stop in North America. Our entire community will greet them as we have greeted seafarers for generations. We will welcome them and celebrate the human victory of overcoming monumental challenge,”

“Newport remains an iconic venue for generations of sailors,” said Richard Brisius, Race Chairman of The Ocean Race. “It is a town built around the water, and people here hold the race close in their hearts, which makes it a stopover to look forward to for all of our sailors and stakeholders.

“When you walk through Fort Adams State Park and down the streets of Newport, you feel enthusiasm and passion for The Ocean Race, and that’s something we take pride in and want to return by bringing a great event to Fort Adams again in 2022,” he adds.

“Fort Adams State Park is the ideal venue to host sailors and fans from around the world and highlight Rhode Island’s extraordinary combination of history, natural beauty, wind, and world-class public parks,” says R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Director Janet Coit.

According to Read, the event had a wide-ranging economic and tourism impact on the community. Organizers released a detailed economic impact report that showed that the 2015 stopover generated an estimated $47.7 million to the Ocean State’s economy. Both events were huge draws for visitors, with over 137,000 people in the race village in 2015 and over 100,000 visitors in 2018.

“The Ocean Race is one of the three pillar events in the sport of sailing, alongside the Olympic Games and America’s Cup, and as such, it provides inspiration and motivation to sailors and sailing fans of all ages,” Brisius added.

“Even beyond that, The Ocean Race, along with Newport-based partners like 11th Hour Racing, demonstrates that sport can have an impact beyond the playing field. With a comprehensive and innovative sustainability program, together, we are leading the way in making a positive difference in our community,” he says.

The 2015 stopover in Newport marked the birth of the sustainability program for the global Ocean Race, an initiative that subsequently expanded to all stopovers in the 2017-18 race.

Coit adds, “The 2015 and 2018 race stopovers exemplified how to make large-scale, public events sustainable and also educated visitors about ocean health and the need to reduce the plastic pollution that fouls our seas. DEM looks forward to our partnership with The Ocean Race, Sail Newport, and all stakeholders in continuing to model green practices and confront environmental problems at the local, state, and global levels.”

During the 2018 stop, for example, at the Newport Ocean Summit, Rhode Island became the first state to sign the UN Environment Clean Seas Pledge, leading to a Governor’s task force on plastic pollution and a forthcoming state-wide ban on plastic bags.

Also, 14.8 tons of greenhouse gas emissions were avoided through the use of a biodiesel fuel blend for generators. At the same time, an alternative transportation campaign inspired 7,561 visitors to use bikes and water taxis instead of cars to visit the race village.

Charlie Enright (Bristol, RI), who grew up sailing locally on Narragansett Bay, has led teams in the past two editions of the event and has his sights set on taking on the challenge of a third race in the new, foiling IMOCA 60 class, with the support of 11th Hour Racing. He takes pride in seeing an event of international stature come to his hometown.

“The Ocean Race is a worldwide sporting event, and to host a stopover in Rhode Island is no small undertaking. I’d say it takes a village, but it certainly takes more than that,” Enright said.

“A successful event takes an active State Government that provides the infrastructure to host something like this. It means the City of Newport expanding its tourism season into late spring and the organization of Sail Newport – a small non-profit on Narragansett Bay – taking on the world,” Enright adds.

“It’s humbling and for me it’s a big point of passion and pride. It’s great to be sailing in and out of Newport, seeing all the spectators, and really having a home-field advantage in an event as international as this is a very special thing,” says Enright.

“At Sail Newport, we have seen the desire of the Rhode Island community to pitch in and help. The most emotional part of this event is watching our community embrace the race, the sailors and the excitement of the race village. That’s what keeps us coming back to host this international race,” Read says.

Yacht Club de Porquerolles

THE YACHT CLUB de PORQUEROLLES celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2016. Its founding President Sébastien Le Ber and his friends, passionate about sailing, created the Yacht Club in 1986 with a view to making the most of the magnificent body of water which surrounds Porquerolles.

Yacht Club de France

THE YACHT CLUB DE FRANCE, founded in 1867, remains faithful to its vocation: to contribute to the development of pleasure boating in all its forms; in cruises and in racing, defend and promote the values of solidarity, courtesy and moral elegance that animate all seafarers. Recognized as a public utility on the eve of the Great War, the Yacht Club de France is proud to have counted among its members Jules Verne, Virginie Hériot, Alain Gerbault, Commander Charcot, Marin-Marie, Eric Tabarly. Respect traditions, bring together the sailors of tomorrow.

Coupe de France

THE COUPE DE FRANCE by YACHT CLUB DE FRANCE was created in 1891 to develop the building of racing vessels in France. For its 55th edition, the challenge reunites the 12mR Class for twelve events throughout the Mediterranean Sea.

International Twelve Metre Association

THE INTERNATIONAL 12 METRE ASSOCIATION encompasses a living history of racing yacht design by the world’s foremost naval architects including Olin Stephens, Clinton Crane, William Fife III, Philip Rhodes, Johan Anker, Ben Lexcen and more who pushed their designs to the very limits of innovation. The resulting boats represented the pinnacle of yacht development from 1907-1987 for the highest levels of international sailing competition– the Olympic Games (1908-1920) and the America’s Cup (1958-1987).

Because of the diversity in age and design of 100+ 12mR yachts built to the International Rule since 1907, the 12mR Class designates a separate World Champion in each of four 12mR Divisions. At this event World Champions will be named in the Grand Prix and Vintage Divisions with trophies awarded to the top 3 finishers in each group.

The 2024 12mR World Championship Competitors in the VINTAGE Division are:

  • Flica II (K-14) , Christopher Bunning, BVI
  • Jenetta (K-1) , Thomas Müller, DE
  • La Spina (I-1) , Michael Creach, IT
  • Nini Anker (N-15) , Christopher Avenarius, DE
  • Northern Light (US-14) , Hans Eliasson, SW
  • Thea (D-1) , Robert de Haer, DE
  • Vim (US-15) , Patrick Howaldt, DN & Helmuth Henning, HK

yacht racing newport ri

With a number of exceptions, the VINTAGE Division yachts are centered primarily in ITMA’s Northern European region where they are frequent rivals on the 12mR race course. Over the past two decades, this fleet has enjoyed a renaissance in the Baltic Sea. Despite their ages –the eldest, D-1 is 106 years old– these yachts are in top racing trim in addition to being beautiful to behold. Vim (US-15) is the reigning World Champion (Finland, 2021) in this division but will be met with fierce opposition in a fleet stacked with very competitive teams.

“The waters of the Bay of Hyeres in Southern France will see 6 Grand Prix 12 Metres racing for their Divisional World Championship. This is the largest group of Grand Prix boats racing in many years. The resurgence of the class racing in the Med is truly spectacular. The Grand Prix boats will be joined by one Modern 12 and a highly motivated and competitive fleet of Vintage boats. Sunny skies, great 12 Metre racing and island life on Porquerolles sound good to me.” Chris Winter, President, International 12mR Association

The 2024 12mR World Championship Competitors in the GRAND PRIX Division are:

  • Crusader (K-24) , Richard Matthews, UK
  • France (F-1) *, Marc Bonduelle, FR
  • French Kiss (F-7) , Christophe Babule, FR

  • Kookaburra II (KA-12) , Patrizio Bertelli, IT & Torben Grael, BR
  • Kookaburra III (KA-15) , Jesper Banks, DN
  • South Australia (KA-8) , Yann DelPlace, FR

*Being built for the 1970 America’s Cup, the national racing yacht of our host country France (F-1) is technically a member of the MODERN 12mR Division but as there are no other entries in this division, F-1 will sail with the GRAND PRIX Division on this auspicious occasion.

Although Legacy (KZ-5), the reigning World Champion in the GP Division will not be competing, the Olympian sailor that helmed KZ-5 to victory– Jesper Banks (DN) will be. He is skippering another 12mR– Kookaburra III (KA-15) to defend his own GP champion title in a group stacked with world-class sailors including Patrizio Bertelli’s (IT) Kookaburra II (KA-12), skippered by Torben Grael, who sailed a perfect regatta sweeping all five races at the recent Pre-Worlds at St. Tropez. We expect “feathers to fly” when the two Kooka’s — KA-12 and KA-15, former Aussie stablemates — meet at Porquerolles. Watch for the the most closely contested 12mR Grand Prix World Championship in recent history.

Porquerolles Preview

If past is prologue, the 2024 12mR World Championship to be organized by the Yacht Club de Porquerolles (Hyères, FRA) from June 16-24 will be truly spectacular! Recently six twelve metres built between 1929- 1986 representing a 57-year cross-section of 12mR development experienced the glorious sailing conditions and onshore hospitality of the venue. They were, Vintage: La Spina (I-1) ; Traditional: Ikra (K-3) ; Modern: France (F-1) ; and Grand Prix: South Australia (KA-8) , French Kiss (F-7) and Kiwi Magic (KZ-7) .

Sailing conditions were perfect with 8- 14 knots wind, air temperature 24°c and fantastic coastal scenery. Porquerolles is beautiful island 5 nm south of Hyères. It is a tourist attraction like Skagen in Denmark, Marstrand in Sweden and the Cape Cod area of the US. With only 200 year-round inhabitants, the island hosts up to 10,000 visitors on a summer day. It is a little paradise, known for the most sun hours in Cote D’Azur. The marina is huge and offers plenty of space for a regatta fleet of 70 boats. The little city is charming with small restaurants around the Square. The organizers were very good, everything worked out well including the social activities. It is a superb place for the Worlds in 2024, and we can highly recommend other 12mRs to come – you will love it! Johan Blach Petersen, Kiwi Magic (KZ-7)

“ This victory is the result of a lot of work by the team. We prepared, had good sails, and thanks to Mr. Bertelli we had an outstanding crew. It was great to sail with my friend Santi (Santigo Lange) for the first time, my great friend Marcelo (Marcelo Ferreira) who was my teammate for 25 years and my son too, it was a great experience for us. ” ~ Torben Grael (BR), skipper, Kookaburra II (KA-12).

The 2024 12mR World Championship Competitors in the GRAND PRIX Division were:

“ It is a great pride for the Porquerolles Yacht Club to have hosted the 12m JI world championship. The line-up was exceptional with the presence of legendary sailors. The races were intense, with difficult weather conditions for everyone. We are very lucky to have an extraordinary team of volunteers at the club, nothing would be possible without them! “ ~ Aurélie Lhuillier, Director of the Porquerolles Yacht Club.

Act II of the Coupe de France Series is now complete and reflected in the updated standings below. A disappointing performance at the Worlds by Coupe de France front-runner Vim (US-15) enabled 2nd place Kiwi Magic (KZ-7) and 3rd place French Kiss (F-7) to narrow the gap in the overall standings. The third and final Act III commences on September 4 at a special 12mR Regatta hosted by the RCNB at the Barcelona (SP) America’s Cup venue.

New York Yacht Club to Host 2025 Team Race World Championship at Harbour Court

' src=

In a historic nod to its long-standing influence in keelboat team racing, the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) will host the 2025 World Sailing Team Race World Championship from May 28 to June 1 at its renowned Harbour Court location in Newport, R.I. This marks the first team racing world championship in a decade and solidifies the NYYC’s leadership in this highly competitive sailing discipline.

The event will be contested in the Club’s fleet of 23-foot Sonar keelboats, following a two-on-two format. While the more common three-on-three setup is widely used in scholastic and collegiate racing, this variation has gained popularity due to its straightforward scoring system—whichever team finishes last loses—and its fast-paced, tactical action. The smaller team sizes also make for more intense competition on the water.

“When the bid package came out, we knew we wanted to run this,” says Susan Daly, co-chair of the NYYC’s Team Racing subcommittee. “It’s a natural fit for us, given our history with keelboat team racing and having hosted a world championship in 2005. This event will also be a fantastic way to launch our 2025 regatta calendar at Harbour Court.”

The New York Yacht Club has long been a pioneer in team racing. In 2000, the Club initiated the keelboat team racing revolution with the Hinman Masters Team Race, which remains one of its cornerstone events. Along with the Hinman Masters, the NYYC hosts three other major team race competitions each summer: the Morgan Cup, the Grandmasters, and the Women’s 2v2. The Club also created the Global Team Race Regatta, hosted in 2018 and 2022. Each of these regattas features Sonar sailboats, meticulously maintained by the Club, and raced with spinnakers. However, the upcoming world championship will use a jib-and-main-only format, dialing up the tactical complexity.

A dozen teams are expected to compete, including a squad representing the host New York Yacht Club. The remaining teams will qualify through their respective national sailing authorities, promising a global showcase of top-tier keelboat team racing talent.

For the NYYC, the event is yet another chapter in its storied tradition, bringing international attention to Newport’s waters and reinforcing its commitment to advancing the sport of team racing.

The New York Yacht Club, which sparked the keelboat team racing revolution with the creation of the Hinman Masters Team Race in 2000, will see this discipline attain the highest competitive level in the sport when it hosts the World Sailing 2025 Team Race World Championship, May 28 to June 1, at Harbour Court in Newport.

The first team racing world championship in a decade will be sailed in the Club’s fleet of 23-foot  Sonar keelboats  in a two-on-two format. While not as widespread as the three-on-three format that is used in scholastic and collegiate racing in the United States and elsewhere around the world, the two-on-two format has won a lot of support with its easy-to-understand scoring format—whichever team finishes in last position loses the race—non-stop action and smaller team size.

“When this came forward, when the bid package came out, we said of course we’d want to run this,” says Susan Daly, co-chair of the New York Yacht Club’s Team Racing subcommittee. “It’s a natural fit for us given our history both with keelboat team racing and having run a team race worlds in 2005 in Vanguard 15 dinghies. This world championship is a great way to kick off a packed 2025 regatta calendar at Harbour Court.” In addition to the Hinman Masters regatta—for which skippers must be 45 or older and crew must be 40 or older—the New York Yacht Club runs three other highly regarded team race events each summer: the Morgan Cup, the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters and the Women’s 2v2. The Club also created the Global Team Race Regatta and hosted it in 2018 and 2022. The Club expertly maintains a fleet of 22 Sonar sailboats that are reserved for team racing and the occasional fleet race regatta. In the four team-race regattas hosted by the New York Yacht Club, spinnakers are used. But the format for the world championship will mandate the jib-and-main-only configuration.  A dozen teams are anticipated, including one from the host New York Yacht Club. The remainder will be qualified through their member national authorities. For United States sailors hoping to compete, a qualifying regatta is anticipated in early 2025. The NOR for the 2025 Team Race World Championship can be found  here . The next edition will be held in August 2026 at the Gamla Stans Yacht Sällskap, Stockholm, Sweden, and is supported by the City of Stockholm and the Swedish Sailing Federation.

Teams meeting the eligibility requirements set out in the  Notice of Race  may submit a Request for Invitation  using this  link .
