What to know about sailing at the 2024 Paris Olympics: History, events, how it works

Portrait of Roxanna Scott

Here's what you need to know about sailing at the  2024 Paris Olympics :

When did sailing become an Olympic sport?

Sailing has been included on the programme for every Summer Games in the modern era but was canceled in 1896 in Athens due to weather conditions. The first Olympic sailing competition was held in 1900 in Paris. (It was called "yachting" until the 2000 Sydney Games.)

In the early Olympics, bigger boats were used with as many as 10-12 sailors per boat. Through the years, the competition moved to one-design boats, meaning all boats are nearly identical in design, and fewer crew members. Women were always allowed to compete with the men; in 1988 events were introduced for women only.

How does Olympic sailing work?

Ten events will be held from July 28 through Aug. 8 in Marseille. Men and women compete separately in four events. There are two mixed events: multihull and dinghy.

Sailing races are held in a fleet race format, meaning a group of boats compete at the same time. Boats are awarded points for their finishing position in each race (first place = 1 point, second place = 2 points). The lower the total score, the better the overall placement for the boat. The worst race result for each boat is eliminated after the opening series.

Sailing events you should know

49er men and 49erFX women: Named after its hull length of 4.99 meters, the 49er is a two-handed skiff.

Formula kite men and women: It's also known as kiteboarding or kitesurfing and involves an athlete being harnessed to a kite while gliding across the water on a board.

Ilca 7 men and Ilca 6 women: A small single-handed dinghy. The women race in a smaller variant of the boat.

IQFoil men and women: A format of windsurfing in which a board appears to fly across the water due to hydrofoils attached to the bottom. At race start, the iQFoil immediately gets up to a racing speed of 25 kilometers per hour.

Nacra 17 mixed: The Nacra 17 in a catamaran that is 17 feet long with hydrofoil daggerboards and winglets.

470 mixed : The 470 is a double-handed dinghy with an overall length of 4.7 meters.

Who are the top Team USA athletes in sailing?

Daniela Moroz is the leading medal contender for the United States, a six-time world champion at age 23. Moroz's parents were windsurfers and she began competing internationally at age 14. She is a three-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year.

Stephanie Roble and Maggie Shea have sailed together since the fall of 2016 in the 49erFX event. The pair have won medals at the 2019 and 2023 Pan American Games and are No. 3 in the Olympic rankings .

What’s the international landscape in Olympic sailing?

Host France, Germany and Great Britain are the only countries to qualify boats in all 10 events. China, Italy, Spain and the USA have nine spots.

Marit Bouwmeester  of the Netherlands is a three-time Olympic medalist competing in the one-person dinghy event. In the men's kite event, Singapore's Max Maeder is a favorite to medal. The 17-year-old won gold and silver at the Formula Kite World Championships (2022, 2024).

The world’s best 330 men’s and women’s sailors will compete at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 , from 28 July to 8 August.

Sixty-five nations have qualified to compete across 10 different events, all of which will take place in the waters of Marseille Marina in South France.

It is important to note that the field of athletes will be evenly split by gender, featuring 165 men and 165 women. Kite will also be part of sailing at the Olympic Games for the first time ever.

Great Britain had a strong showing at Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 , winning five medals in total, including three golds in the women’s 470, men’s 49er and men’s Finn. Australia won two gold medals as well in Tokyo, taking home titles in both the men’s 470 and Laser.

Tokyo was a microcosm of Olympic history as Great Britain has far and away the most sailing gold medals of any nation with 31 (64 total medals) since the sport’s inception at the Olympic Games in 1900. The USA is second with 19 gold medals and 61 medals in total.

Below, we take a closer look at the stars to watch out for in Paris, a full schedule and how to watch the action.

The same goes for Luuc van Opzeeland of the Netherlands . The 25-year-old is the reigning world champion in men’s windsurfing-iQFOiL.

Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic is looking to win a third straight medal at the Games, taking home silver in the men’s Laser at the previous two Olympics.

When it comes to sailing, two nations are traditionally dominant: Great Britain and the United States.

Great Britain leads all nations in sailing gold medals (31) and total medals (64), while Team USA has the most silver medals (23) and second-most total medals (61).

Norway is third in gold medals with 17, trailing only Great Britain and the U.S. France, meanwhile, is third in total medals with 49.

In recent years, Great Britain has only gotten better at sailing. The country has won the most sailing medals at five of the last six Olympics, only losing out to Australia in 2012. The Brits won three golds and five total medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while the U.S. was shut out.

Five Top Yachts For 2024

  • By Kim Kavin
  • April 9, 2024

CL Yachts CLB80

During the Miami International Boat Show last February, a bevy of builders introduced a host of new models for yachting enthusiasts of all kinds. Attendees had the opportunity to see enhanced helm stations, eco-friendly propulsion options, plush creature comforts, and more. Here, we offer a glimpse at some of the yachts that were seen and talked about, whether they’re already under construction or just now coming off the drawing boards for early orders.

CL Yachts CLB80

CLB80: Made for Different Cruising Styles

CL Yachts is adding a fourth model to its B Series: the CLB80, which joins the CLB65, CLB72 and CLB88 flagship. Aboard the CLB80, owners can choose a forward or aft galley. With the latter, there’s a stool-height dining table that can tuck away against the galley counter, becoming a high bar or a side table for different styles of entertaining. Owners also can choose a single or double helm station, depending on how they prefer to cruise. All four guest staterooms are belowdecks, including an amidships master that spans the 22-foot-6-inch beam. The VIP stateroom is forward with a skylight for additional natural light. There are also two crew cabins with separate access, located between the engine room and beach club.

Saxdor 400 GTO

Saxdor 400 GTO: A New Flagship

Saxdor Yachts is a Finnish yard that was established in 2019. It offers three models: the 270 GTO, the 320 GTO and the recently launched 400 GTO. Note the size of the foldout balcony in the image below; there’s another one on the starboard side of the vessel, substantially increasing the outdoor space when the boat is at anchor. Guests can have snacks or lunch in that shaded section or set out a spread forward on the table beneath open skies. Belowdecks are two staterooms: one forward and one amidships. For cruising families, the shipyard offers the option of adding a kids cabin. Standard power is a pair of 300 hp Mercury Marine V-8s, though the boat is designed for a maximum of 800 hp, if owners want other outboards at the transom.

Cicem TM 37

Vicem TM 37: Sport Fishing in High Style

The TM in the model name of Vicem’s TM 37 stands for “Tuna Masters.” This is a line of center-console boats that the Turkish builder launched earlier this year, with more models expected to come at different lengths overall. Hull No. 1 of the TM 37 is powered by triple 350 hp Mercury Marine outboards that reportedly give eager-to-get-there anglers a top hop of nearly 48 knots. The standard power package is a pair of the 350s, which Vicem says allows for a top speed of about 40 knots. Range is estimated at 350 nautical miles, with a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer as part of the standard-equipment package for more-comfortable time spent on board. Belowdecks are twin berths and a wet head for overnights. Electronics at the helm are by Raymarine.

Cruisers Yachts 55 Fly

Cruisers Yachts 55 Fly: Coming this Spring

The 55 Fly is the first model in the new Flybridge series from Cruisers Yachts, which also offers Cantius and GLS series. Expect the official launch of the 55 Fly this spring, with the second model in the Flybridge series on tap for next year. Luiz De Basto collaborated with the Cruisers team on interiors, using the design theme “back to nature in a tech world.” Josh Delforge, vice president of operations and engineering at Cruisers, says that one goal with the 55 Fly was best-in-class water interaction—hence the foldout side platform and sizable swim platform shown in the image below. Power will be twin 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950s, allowing extra volume to devote to the accommodations for six guests.

Crincess Y95

Princess Y95: High Style Meets 23-Knot Speed

The Y95 is the new flagship of Princess Yachts’ four-model Y Class of open-flybridge designs in larger sizes. There are five en suite staterooms for a total of 10 guests, with the master spanning the full beam on the main deck. The flybridge is set up for driving and entertaining in comfort. There are twin adjustable helm seats, along with a forward-facing L-shaped seating area for guests. The dining table up top seats 10 people (additional dining space is on the main deck). A bar on the flybridge includes a sink, an electric barbecue, a hob and a drawer refrigerator. Power is a pair of 2,000 hp MAN V-12s that, according to Princess, allow for a top speed of 23 knots. Crew quarters are abaft the engine room, separate from the guest spaces.

Cannes 2024 at the starting line: new highlights on display at the yachting festival

  • Alessandro Giuzio
  • August 30, 2024

The Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 is just a few days away, scheduled to take place from September 10th to 15th. The Vieux Port and Port Canto will host over 700 boats freshly launched from the most prestigious French and international shipyards. These include the best motor and sailing models, the latest marine equipment and technologies, the most exclusive services, and the brand-new marina dedicated to motorboats up to 13 meters. In the following lines, we preview descriptions and images of the most interesting boats .

” With just fifteen days to go before the opening, we are eager to welcome back our exhibitors and visitors – says Sylvie Ernoult , director of the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 – The setup for the event began on August 12th, and everything is progressing well. The docks and stands are finding their final positions to accommodate the boats. As every year, the Cannes Yachting Festival kicks off the season by unveiling a very eclectic offering. We are proud to host nearly 700 boats, including 120 world premieres, and 640 exhibitors. Our visitors will experience the best of the yachting industry: not only the most renowned shipyards and equipment manufacturers but also new entries in the sector showcasing their creations”.

port vieux

As usual, the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 will span both the Vieux Port and Port Canto. On one side, the water will feature 355 new motor units ranging from 12 to 45 meters, along with various equipment manufacturers and service companies related to the boating sector. On the other side, Port Canto will showcase the sailing universe with 120 new units, including monohulls and multihulls, a brokerage area with 45 pre-owned boats over 25 meters, a space dedicated to nautical toys, and the brand-new power boat marina, which will host 175 boats under 13 meters in length.

As shipyards and equipment manufacturers steadily shift towards sustainability, allocating much of their budget to research and development, eco-efficient innovations that are increasingly prevalent in the marine field will be highlighted at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024. These innovations will be showcased through the “ Innovation Route “, which visitors can follow by looking for specific signage.

The premières on display at Cannes 2024

Among the boats on display at Cannes 2024, some will certainly attract more attention than others. One of these is the world premiere of the Zodiac Nautic X10CC, the largest boat ever built by the French shipyard. Its spacious deck allows easy movement on board, regardless of the number of passengers, which can reach up to 20.

Zodiac Nautic X10CC cannes 2024

Equally noteworthy is the Brabus Shadow 1000 Sun , the fastest motorboat ever built by Brabus Marine. It boasts impressive acceleration and speed thanks to two 4.6-liter Mercury V8 500R racing engines that produce 1,000 horsepower, combined with exceptional handling. This is also a world premiere, making its debut at the Cannes 2024 showcase.

Another absolute debut at Cannes 2024 is the Evo Yachts 4+ , a new 13-meter model that follows the success of the Evo R+. The Italian shipyard reintroduces the closed deck solution for comfortable onboard living in various weather conditions, adding a stylish aluminum hard top. The beach area includes a custom multifunctional aft platform that ensures maximum livability in this zone, and when extended, adds an additional meter to the boat’s length.

For catamaran enthusiasts visiting Cannes 2024, the Lagoon 43 is a must-see. The French shipyard has added an extra opening at the rear of the hulls, providing easier access between the boat and the dock, combining safety and comfort to enhance onboard well-being. The new design of the Lagoon 43 offers generous volumes and larger berths in all cabins, ensuring unprecedented livability for a boat of this size.

Another world premiere in the catamaran segment is the Thira 80 by Fountaine Pajot, a true super yacht featuring innovative spaces not found on other models of this size. It boasts two side cockpits with foldable wings, a beach club that faces entirely towards the sea for enjoying anchorages, and storage areas designed for toys, such as bow lockers for paddleboards. This makes the Thira 80 an eagerly anticipated and innovative addition to the festival.

Fountaine Pajot Thira 80

Among the Italian shipyards present at Cannes 2024, the Ice 53 ST Yachts is a standout. This extremely fast boat, made entirely of carbon, features a conversion kit that allows it to be transformed from a cruising yacht to a racing version in just a few hours. The Ice 53 ST is the result of a robust one-piece construction that ensures a high level of safety, making it a highly anticipated exhibit at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024.

Another highlight is the Sanlorenzo SP92, which combines sleek design and refined performance to offer supreme comfort and ecological responsibility. With a structure designed to reduce environmental impact and maximize energy efficiency, the Sanlorenzo SP92 represents the cutting edge of marine sustainability.

Lastly, Azimut will showcase the Seadeck 7 at Cannes 2024, a hybrid-powered yacht designed for long cruises, fostering an authentic connection with nature and providing an immersive sea experience thanks to its reinvented cockpit. This yacht reduces carbon emissions by up to 40% through innovative technologies.

America’s Cup: Challenger series update

Published on September 17th, 2024 by Editor -->

by Craig Leweck, Scuttlebutt Sailing News The Louis Vuitton Cup will select the challenger to face the defender in the 37th America’s Cup, and each of the four remaining teams has two goals during the series: improve and advance.

When the British team earned the right to select their semi-final opponent, they decided that advancing was more important, and selected the Swiss team which had been most vulnerable in the qualifying round robin stage. But would the Brits be pushed hard enough to improve?

The British had little trouble beating the Swiss on Day One and Day Two , scoring four wins in the best of 9 semi-final match. Needing one more win, the light winds of Barcelona returned for Day Three , and when the Brits fell off the foils in the only race of the day, the Swiss scored a win to stay alive.

In the other semi final match, the racing was closer between Italy and USA, but in the four races held on Day One and Day Two , the Italians found a way to win when USA couldn’t. However, similar to the Brits on Day Three , Italy made a mess of the only race to give USA their first win.

yachting 2024

With all four teams getting a day off before the series resumes on September 18, can the teams sitting at 1-4 win four straight races to advance? The Swiss have appeared out of their element too often, and the USA admits their AC75 has handling problems. Can it all be fixed in a day? Standing by.

The 11 Most Exciting Superyacht Debuts at the Monaco Yacht Show

This year's newbies range from a 400-footer that charters for $3.25 million per week to multiple hybrid yachts, including one that runs on methanol., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Monaco Yacht Show

The Monaco Yacht Show always promises a stellar lineup— last year had an unusually large number of wild launches—and this time around will be no exception. More than 120 superyachts, including 20-plus that measure 200 feet and above, will be on the docks at Port Hercule, with beautiful Monte Carlo in the hills above.

Among the fleet of anticipated launches is the 400-foot Kismet . Built by Lürssen and launched earlier this year, this stunner will be shown before the winter charter season, at a weekly rate of $3.25 million. The vessel is sure to stand out, thanks to the large silver jaguar sculpture fitted under its bowsprit.

Besides bling, showgoers will notice the concerted push toward sustainability this year. Rossinavi has introduced the Seawolf X , its first hybrid-electric catamaran, and Nautor Swan’s sailing maxi yacht, DreamCatcher , is also its first hybrid. Sanlorenzo is launching Almax , its first 50-meter (165-foot) vessel with hydrogen fuel cells. It was developed with Siemens Energy.

Siemens is also sponsoring the show’s Sustainability Hub, which has become a breeding ground for eco-friendly concepts and new ideas to promote a greener superyacht sector. This year’s conference will cover alternative propulsion, outlining how it will be adopted over the next five years. The show’s Yacht Design & Innovation Hub takes a less technical approach to sustainability. It’s the place where leading designers and mainstream innovators converge, presenting vessels that will shape the future of superyacht design.

Here are 11 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Lürssen ‘Kismet’

yachting 2024

The 400-foot Kismet is the most anticipated boat on display at Monaco this year. True to form, Shahid Khan’s third Lürssen, which charters for $3.25 million per week, will be an exceptional landmark in a marina of superyachts. Alongside its Nemo lounge for viewing marine life, a Balinese-inspired spa with the first chromotherapy bathtub on a yacht, and upper-deck dining options for 24 people, the vessel has a duplex owner’s apartment with two separate marbled bathrooms, a fireplace, and gilded wall coverings. When guests have had their fill of the DJ station and Bogányi piano, the ’80s retro matrix dance floor should keep the party going.

Royal Huisman ‘Special One’

yachting 2024

Set to make a splash is Royal Huisman’s 171-foot Special One , the largest sportfisherman in the world. Commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and passionate fisherman, the monster sportfish is kitted out with a fighting chair, 22 fishing rods, insulated cooler boxes, and a dedicated bait-and-tackle room. The teak foredeck can transition into a sheltered private lounge area and also converts to an outdoor cinema. Designed by Vripack, the vessel offers up proportions and seakeeping capabilities that are matched by its impressive 30-knot top speed.

Rossinavi ‘Seawolf X’

yachting 2024

Looming large above the water, the 140-foot Seawolf X is Rossinavi’s most ambitious build to date. The hybrid-electric catamaran is the Italian shipyard’s first multihull, which can stay in electric mode during transatlantic trips for 80 percent of the time. Even more impressive is the onboard artificial intelligence system—Rossinavi AI—which analyses the operation of the vessel, predicts the needs of guests and optimizes crew service and logistics. The interior is designed by New York-based Meyer Davis, with an exterior penned by Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design. Its wow features include a cockpit centered around a pool, a second hidden pool on the bow area, and an outdoor cinema.

Bilgin ‘Eternal Spark’

yachting 2024

Eternal Spark is the first hull in Bilgin’s 163 series. In addition to six outdoor and three indoor lounge areas, the yacht can host over 100 people while at anchor from its five dedicated bar areas. Hot Lab’s use of wood inlays and embossed natural leather create a refined interior aesthetic, while the combination of a huge beach club, sauna, pool, and two cinemas—outdoor and indoor—should keep guests happy. Built with over 200 different materials, it shows how advanced the Turkish yard has become with its last few launches.

Sanlorenzo ‘Almax’

yachting 2024

Sanlorenzo’s first fuel-cell-powered 50Steel model joins a growing list of yacht launches exploring alternative power sources. The fuel-cell technology converts biomethanol (green methanol) into enough electricity to cover the hotel load so the yacht can anchor all night without generators. Almax also has Sanlorenzo’s newly patented Hidden Engine Room (HER), located on the lower deck. This novel configuration creates enough interior volume to include a 1,615-square-foot beach club with a pool and unfolding sea terraces, while keeping the yacht below 500GT. The shipyard has confirmed the sale of four units to date.

Custom Line50

yachting 2024

Making its global debut a Monaco, the four-decked Custom Line50 is the Italian shipyard’s new flagship model. The dedicated owner’s apartment on the upper deck includes full-height windows, a full-beam suite, and a large private terrace. The sun deck’s lounge seating, cocktail bar, uninterrupted views, and glass-edged infinity pool amplify the sense of being on a floating island. It’s an effective design that is replicated on the main aft deck. This area offers stepped access to the sea, a scenario that is reinforced by an aquamarine-and-cream interior color scheme.

Damen ‘Five Oceans’

yachting 2024

The newest model from Damen’s Yacht Support 53 range, Five Oceans was built for Tommy Allen, an entrepreneur committed to ocean exploration and marine conservation. The vessel will be easy to spot in Monaco’s Port Hercules, thanks to its powder-blue, orange, and white hull. The custom build is Allen’s second yacht-support vessel from Damen. It has a sprawling aft deck to carry toys and tenders as well as a 15-ton deck crane for the launch and recovery of the electric boats and Triton 3300 Pro submersible. Five Oceans also carries an Icon A5 amphibious aircraft.

Tankoa ‘Diamond Binta’

yachting 2024

Conceived as a world explorer, Tankoa’s 190-foot Diamond Binta blends a hybrid propulsion package with high-gloss finishes over a wooden interior. Penned by Francesco Paszkowski, Tankoa’s long-time design collaborator, the full custom build has an owner’s suite with a fold-out balcony, a forward helideck for shore-based excursions, a large beach club with a spa, and massage room as well as a sundeck with a gym and pool. A corridor on the lower deck connects the yacht’s five guest cabins to the beach area, passing through a viewable engine room.

Nautor Swan ‘DreamCatcher’

yachting 2024

As Nautor Swan’s first hybrid yacht, the 88-foot DreamCatcher is described by the shipyard as a “no-compromise cruiser with a racer’s soul.” Designed for guest comfort with a maximum heeling angle of 20 degrees, its exterior is penned by veteran Swan designer Germán Frers, while the light-wood interior with gray accents is done by Misa Poggi. The aft cockpit has a new coachroof design with an integrated sprayhood, bimini, and modular benches that can be used for both lounging and dining. The stern area incorporates a large beach club area and tender garage. On the foredeck is the “sunset lounge.”

Oceanco ‘H3’

yachting 2024

Built in 2000 as 312-foot Al Mirqab for a member of the Qatari royal family, the renovated H3 emerged from Oceanco’s facilities in 2023 looking brand new, with an extra 476 gross tons of internal volume. The vessel’s 33-foot extension—to accommodate the owner’s request for an infinity pool with a convertible dance floor and waterfall—and a fully replaced superstructure were enough for Lloyd’s Register to classify the yacht as a new build. A spa on the lower deck has a hammam, a sensory shower, a hair salon, and treatment rooms. The beach club with its rippled mirror ceiling offers stepped access to the sea.

Conrad ‘Extra Time’

yachting 2024

Extra Time , the second hull in Conrad’s C144 series, has an exterior by Reymond Langton Design and naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design. The interior is by M2 Atelier. Much like its sistership Ace , Extra Time has a beach club, four guest lounge areas, a cinema, two bars and an infinity pool. Standout personal touches include an attention-grabbing King Kong  sculpture in the main salon and the main-deck owner’s suite that’s accessed via a private study with an electric piano.

  • September 18, 2024

Norwegian Luna

Norwegian Cruise Line today unveiled and opened for sale the next evolution of its Prima Plus Class, the all-new Norwegian Luna, according to a press release.

The new ship will sail from Miami beginning April 4, 2026 through November 2026. The Norwegian Luna will kick off its inaugural Caribbean season with two western itineraries to Roatan Island, Honduras; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; and Harvest Caye, Belize.

The ship will then sail seven-day cruises with calls to the beautiful Eastern Caribbean destinations of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas, which will feature a brand-new pier by late 2025.

Norwegian Luna

At 1,056 feet long, 156,300 gross tons, and accommodating approximately 3,550 guests at double occupancy, the Norwegian Luna will boast an overall 10 percent size and capacity increase from Prima Class ships, and will be built at Fincantieri.

“Inspired by the relationship between the moon and the tides of the ocean, we are excited to introduce Norwegian Luna as the vessel that perfectly complements her sister ship, Norwegian Aqua,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “The debut of Norwegian Luna truly showcases our ongoing commitment to providing guests more of what they enjoy and value – a brand-new ship with the latest, innovative offerings sailing to the beautiful, tropical destinations of the Caribbean. It’s important to give our guests more to see, more to do, more to enjoy on board and ultimately more out of their cruise vacation. We can’t wait for them to experience Norwegian Luna!”

The company said the Norwegian Luna’s hull art will showcase a vibrant dreamscape by ELLE, the highly acclaimed street artist from Napa, Calif., who has partnered with popular brand names such as Nike, Reebok and Ralph Lauren. Entitled ‘La Luna,’ the artwork is a visual exploration of humanity’s deep-rooted connection with the celestial forces in space as human beings are intrinsically linked to the ebb and flow of the moon. ‘La Luna’ will display proudly on the bow of the ship, leading guests on an extraordinary voyage and an epic journey of discovery.
