The Riverboat Cruise In Kentucky You Never Knew Existed

The Dixie Belle riverboat cruise in Shaker Village offers a scenic and historical journey along the Kentucky River.

Written by

There's something magical about a riverboat, quietly waiting on the shores of a river, ready to come back to life. Within the popular destination of Shaker Village in Harrodsburg, the Dixie Belle has come back to life and it's carrying passengers down the Kentucky River. There may be other more popular cruises available in Kentucky, but this one that you may not have heard of is a delightful way to spend an afternoon.

If you've ever spent time in Harrodsburg's Shaker Village, then you know its historical significance and interesting past. But you may not realize that they offer a cruise aboard their 115-passenger riverboat, the Dixie Belle. It's a unique way to learn more about this treasured area of Kentucky.

alt

If you wish to take a ride aboard the Dixie Belle, then you can purchase tickets at the Trustees' Office and then head to Shaker Landing. The boat cruises May - October, everyday and departs at 2pm and 4pm for an hour long trip.

alt

You'll have plenty of opportunity to view the scenic Kentucky River Palisades, high limestone cliffs and untouched natural beauty along the banks of the river. You can relax in a seat and take in the views.

alt

The peaceful cruise down the river also includes a narrated history of the area and the importance of the river to the Shakers. It's a great extension to the interactive history you experience in the village.

alt

One of the most unique views during the trip comes when you pass under High Bridge, an engineering marvel built in 1877. If the weather is right, the reflection of the bridge on the water is breathtaking.

alt

Now that you know about this delightful riverboat cruise along the Kentucky River, you should definitely consider adding it to your Shaker Village Itinerary. It's a vintage excursion that takes you back in time to learn about this fascinating area and will have you falling even more in love with the Bluegrass State.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium In Kentucky Is Among The Most Haunted Places In The Nation

Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky, is a renowned haunted location offering year-round tours and ghost hunts.

If you're a fan of ghostly tales and haunted places in Kentucky then every season is creepy season in the Bluegrass State. While fall and October specifically do seem to have their fair share of ghosts and ghouls, many of these supposedly haunted spots can be visited all year long. Perhaps the most popular ghostly residence in Kentucky is Waverly Hills Sanatorium. This historic building in Louisville is well-known, especially by those who enjoy ghost hunts, and it's even known around the world as one of the most haunted places in the U.S.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium is a historic former hospital in Louisville that came close to being demolished. A historical society saved it and has offered tours, ghost hunts, and other events for several years.

alt

The building (and its ghostly residents) has gained much notoriety over the years thanks to famous ghost hunters, tv shows, and word of mouth from visitors. If you enjoy history, haunting tales, and meeting ghosts, a tour should be on your bucket list.

alt

The building has been maintained and stabilized to allow visitors to take guided tours, both paranormal and historical. You can even arrange a private investigation and bring along equipment.

alt

This image was captured during a visit. It looks like Casper the friendly ghost was perhaps a former patient or employee of the hospital.

alt

If you do book a private investigation, you have the option of staying in a building that's original to the property.

alt

It's actually a nice accommodation with modern furnishings. But don't be fooled - this is one of the creepiest areas of the property.

alt

Waverly Hills Sanatorium often offers a haunted house event (event is cancelled for 2021), a Christmas light display and it's always offering its tours. Be sure to follow along on the website and Facebook page, linked below, to find out more information and to plan a visit.

alt

If you were to do a search for "haunted places near me," this place would most certainly appear near the top of the list!

Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville is basically a haunted house all year long. Tours and overnight stays are available throughout the year and be sure to keep an eye on the Waverly Hills Sanatorium website and the The Waverly Hills Sanatorium Facebook page for details on upcoming events.

Have you ever been to this creepy haunted sanatorium in KY? If so, what was your favorite part? Would you agree that it is among the most haunted places in Kentucky? We'd love to read about your experience in the comments section below!

Most People Don’t Know The Story Behind This Hidden Tunnel In Kentucky

Nada Tunnel, a historic 900-foot tunnel in Kentucky, offers a unique and scenic entrance to Red River Gorge.

Known as "The Gateway to Red River Gorge," Nada Tunnel is a historic 900-foot tunnel that is without a doubt the most fascinating way to enter the gorge. If you’re driving along KY-77 in Powell County, you’ll encounter this hidden tunnel, which looks like a hole carved into the face of a mountain, with the greenery of the surrounding trees ready to swallow your car. Turn on your headlights, make sure oncoming cars aren’t moving through the tunnel, and get ready to drive through this remarkable piece of Kentucky. Bone up on your Nada Tunnel history, and the spooky stories that have been told about this dark, hidden tunnel in Kentucky .

Construction of the tunnel began in 1910. Dynamite, drills, and various other tools were used to blast through the face of the limestone rock.

alt

The tunnel was completed in 1911. Its initial purpose was to allow locomotives to transport timber from logging operations in the Gorge to a sawmill in Clay City, about 15 miles away.

These next few Nada Tunnel photos show a darker side to this historic tunnel.

alt

During its construction, one man was killed when he put a stick of frozen dynamite next to a fire to thaw it, and it exploded. Due to the tunnel’s rugged nature and unique appearance, there are a few different creepy stories and legends associated with Nada Tunnel. Many say it’s haunted by the ghost of the man who was killed in the dynamite blast. Others say a rock climber fell to his death while attempting to scale the cliffs above the tunnel entrance.

Both of these stories are attributed to the legend that sometimes at night, an eerie green orb can be seen floating at the entrance of Nada Tunnel. Is Nada Tunnel haunted?

alt

Some say that unidentifiable moaning sounds can be heard in the tunnel, seemingly coming from inside the rock walls. However, if you are on foot or on a bike, it is not advisable to enter the tunnel, even if you do want to try to hear these ghostly noises. The tunnel has no interior lighting, and it’s very narrow, so don’t get hit by a car and become the next ghost of Nada Tunnel.

alt

If you’re looking for the Red River Gorge tunnel and planning on entering the Gorge through Nada Tunnel, be advised that the tunnel can only let one car through at a time. Be sure to stop at the entrance and check for the headlights of oncoming cars, and turn your lights on as well. The tunnel is 12 feet wide and 13 feet high, so if you’re driving a larger vehicle, be careful.

alt

The entirety of Red River Gorge is a captivating look back into Kentucky’s history, with little shreds of evidence of life from previous centuries everywhere.

alt

Nada Tunnel, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, transports you back to the early 20th century and reminds you of the manpower and hard labor that went into its construction. We love these Nada Tunnel pictures.

alt

To get to Nada Tunnel, take exit 33 off the Bert T. Comb Mountain Parkway. From there, take KY-11 N for 1.5 miles. Turn right on KY-77 N and continue for about two miles until you eventually reach the tunnel. Once you make it through the Nada Tunnel in Kentucky, there are tons of trailheads and beautiful scenery on the other side. Welcome to Red River Gorge! Grab some maps from AllTrails+ and enjoy your outdoor adventures.

Belle of Cincinnati to make annual Tri-State trip with cruises out of Huntington, Ashland and Portsmouth

More in latest news:.

By DAVE LAVENDER

The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Folks have seen it the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, at the Centennial Festival of Riverboats, at the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee, and every seasonal weekend, plying the Ohio River waters between Newport, Ky., and Cincinnati, Ohio.

But this week, the Belle of Cincinnati is all ours as BB Riverboats owner and Capt. Alan Bernstein and a crew of about 25 make their way upriver with stops Thursday through Sunday in such Tri-State river cities as Portsmouth, Ohio, Ashland, Ky., and Huntington, W.Va., and then stops at Maysville, Ky., Monday and Tuesday on the way back to Cincinnati.

The flagship of BB Riverboats, the Belle of Cincinnati has lavish Victorian decor on three climate-controlled decks with seating for up to 700 people, and has full bars, buffet restaurant seating, elevator access,as well as an open-air top deck.

Capt. Alan Berstein previously told The Herald-Dispatch that the crew loves making its annual trip out of Cincinnati, where they host lots of themed trips from craft brew cruises to Pirate-themed adventures, to some of the smaller Ohio River cities in the region.

“It is sort of like a modern day Mark Twain kind of thing where you get to a lot of little towns like Maysville, Kentucky, and you see how a little town operates,” Bernstein said. “Everybody who goes on these trips when we get back they say that was really a great experience and we enjoy coming to these river towns. It is sort of like the circus coming to town where they are coming down and taking pictures and asking you were you’re from and where you are going.”

Interestingly, Bernstein said he’s got a particular soft spot for Huntington as it is home to the Huntington-based U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“We see a lot of little towns but Huntington is not a small town and you’ve got great amenities there like Pullman Square and some really nice restaurants,” Bernstein said. “Huntington is a really neat place that has a lot of energy with a lot of people downtown and it is sort of unique. Most people say they like Chicago and New York and L.A., but I happen to love all of these river towns.”

While Bernstein said he loves being on the river, he also loves sharing that experience with folks who may not get out on the river save for a ride on the Belle, and connecting them to the history-rich feeling of floating on the river.

“It is a modern day way to get a good sense of what the settlers had to endure when they decided they were going to leave where they were from and float down this river and find a new place to live and for most of them it was a one-way trip and there is a natural beauty that goes when you leave a city and go out in the wilderness and that is really exceptional,” Bernstein said. “The Ohio River is a beautiful thing to experience. I get to do it all the time and I never get tired of it and true river people don’t get tired of it. When you go on a cruise you want to watch the river go by and wave at the people on the bank. To me it is a very mind boggling to think that people had the guts to get on a raft made of trees and float on the river to find a new place to live. We’ve got a modern day boat with engines and radar and all the modern day equipment. I sit in that pilot house thinking what it would have been like to do that, no radio, no radar, those people just had guts.”

Here’s a look at the cruises that the Belle of Cincinnati is offering in the Tri-State this week:

Thursday, July 20 in Portsmouth for a 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. dinner cruise.

Friday, July 21 in Portsmouth for a noon lunch cruise, a 3:30 p.m. sightseeing cruise and a 7:30 p.m. dinner cruise.

Saturday, July 22 in Ashland for a noon lunch cruise, a 3:30 p.m. sightseeing cruise and a 7:30 p.m. dinner cruise.

Monday, July 24 in Maysville, Kentucky, for a 7:30 p.m. dinner cruise.

Tuesday , July 25 in Maysville, Kentucky, for a noon lunch cruise.

Cost for the lunch/brunch cruises is $37 ($20 non-meal) and children $22 ($11 non-meal).

Sightseeing cruises are $20 and $11 for children while dinner cruises are $45 ($24 non-meal) and $28 for kids ($14 non-meal).

Boarding times are one hour before the brunch, lunch and dinner cruises and 30 minutes before sight-seeing cruises.

Go online at www.bbriverboats.com or call 800-261-8586 or 859-261-8500.

15 Best Things to Do in Ashland (KY)

This manufacturing city on the Ohio River is the anchor for the fifth-largest metropolitan area in Kentucky , and part of the Tri-State Area, crossing over to West Virginia and Ohio .

Ashland developed quickly in the late 19th century on the back of the pig iron trade, and as a riverport transporting commodities in and out of the region.

There’s evidence of prehistoric Native American settlement all around, but the story of modern Ashland begins in 1786, when the Scotch-Irish Poage family settled at this spot on the Ohio River, founding the homestead known as Poage’s Landing.

The Poages are still in Ashland’s heart, celebrated with the Poage Landing Days festival in September, one of several distinctive events held in the city.

1. Downtown Ashland

Downtown Ashland

With Winchester Ave as its backbone, Ashland has a lively downtown area, blending historic architecture with plenty of locally-owned shops and restaurants.

The Ashland Commercial Historic District here is on more than 20 acres and includes upwards of 80 properties dating between 1850 and 1940.

You can check out the most significant on the Historic Walking Tour, which we’ll talk about later in this list.

One popular modern tradition downtown is First Friday, when the city lets its hair down in summer, with live music, a classic car cruise-in and children’s activities on a closed section of Winchester Ave.

2. Central Park

Ashland Central Park

Ashland’s own Central Park is at the foot of a wooded ridge next to the downtown area, and was sold to the city in 1900 by the Kentucky Iron, Coal and Manufacturing Company.

Up to the 1920s much of these 47 acres were taken up by a horse racing track. Now Central Park is a fabulous asset for Ashland, with soaring hardwood trees, an ornamental pond in the shape of the State of Kentucky and some historical curiosities.

One is the set of six burial mounds left by the prehistoric Adena culture, which peaked in the region between 800 BCE and 100 CE. More recent is the relocated log home of Ashland’s founding Poage family.

3. Paramount Arts Center

Paramount Arts Center

For several blocks along Winchester Ave you can spot the sign and marquee for this regionally important performing arts center.

When it opened in 1931, this Art Deco venue was one of the first movie theaters to be built for talkies, although, because of the Great Depression, the building is on a more modest scale than the gigantic theater that was originally planned.

After closing in the early 1970s the theater was purchased by the Greater Ashland Foundation and turned into a multidisciplinary performing arts center.

At the opulent auditorium there’s a feast of concerts, from classical to rock, as well as broadway, dramas, ballet and high-quality community performances by the Paramount Players.

One small claim to fame is that the music video for “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus was filmed at the Paramount.

4. Highlands Museum & Discovery Center

Highlands Museum & Discovery Center

This diverse attraction downtown is a few different museums rolled into one. For starters you can chart the history of the Tri-State area from the time of prehistoric Native Americans up to the World Wars.

There’s also a hall dedicated to the area’s rich country music heritage, incorporating U.S. Route 23 (The Country Music Highway), and local stars like Billy Ray Cyrus and The Judds.

Other riveting exhibits include century-old medical artifacts, local aviation history, the Discovery Cavern, which delves into local underground chambers, and a section about aerospace and satellites, in collaboration with Morehead State University.

5. Port of Ashland

Port of Ashland

The name of this riverfront park recalls the days when Ashland depended on the river for its livelihood. Nowadays the Port of Ashland is a more sedate place, where you can ponder the Ohio River, bring a picnic and go fishing.

Some big stars have performed at this very spot during Ashland’s Summer Motion Festival, all rounded off with a fireworks display. On a typical day this is a great vantage point for the sunrise or sunset.

In 2020 a striking ensemble of monumental sculptures was unveiled at the park, designed by renowned Spanish artist, Ginés Serrán-Pagán.

These are: Venus, representing the people and culture of the city; Genesis, symbolizing the river and Ashland’s rebirth, and lastly, Vulcan, for industry and the role of metals in the city’s history.

6. Historic Walking Tour

Bath Avenue, Ashland

For anyone who wants to go a little deeper and get the inside track on the city’s long history, Visit Ashland has plotted an easy but enlightening self-guided walk around Ashland.

Perfect for smartphones, the Historic Walking Tour has 30 stops, beginning at Central Park and concluding at the Paramount Arts Center.

Each stop is accompanied by an illuminating paragraph, as you pass genteel 19th-century houses on Lexington Ave and Bath Ave, and grand turn-of-the-century commercial buildings and public amenities along Winchester Ave downtown.

7. Poage Landing Days

Festival

On the third weekend of September, Ashland’s annual Homecoming Festival is three days of family-friendly entertainment and activities along Winchester Avenue downtown.

The event, which was revived in 1990, marks the arrival of the Poage family at what is now Ashland in 1786 after migrating from the Shenandoah Valley via the Cumberland Gap.

There’s more going on than we could possibly list here, but headlines include live music on the 16th Street Stage, great food and drink from multiple vendors, an antique car cruise, the Southern Fried Cone Fest, carnival rides, talented circus performers and free children’s activity tents.

8. Camayo Arcade

Camayo Arcade

If you’re interested in historic architecture, something special to seek out in downtown Ashland is this preserved twin-level shopping arcade, similar to a European shopping passage.

When it opened in 1926, the Camayo Arcade became the first indoor shopping mall in Kentucky.

The building was restored just over a decade ago, and you can head inside to admire period features like the terrazzo flooring, vaulting stuccoed ceiling and Art Deco guard rails and lighting.

There’s a fast food stand at the entrance, and an assortment of offices and service businesses occupying the retail spaces.

9. Ashland Town Center

Shopping

Northwest of downtown, Ashland has its own enclosed mall, which opened in 1989 and still has more than 70 tenants.

In a time when many malls are struggling, this spot has good occupancy and plenty of familiar brands like JCPenney, TJ Maxx, rue21, Kay Jewelers, GameStop, Victoria’s Secret, Claire’s and American Eagle.

There are also flourishing small businesses here, like the popular Superhero Creamery, combining ice cream and frozen yogurt with a wide array of collectibles, toys, comics and custom t-shirt printing.

Dining choices include mall favorites like Sbarro, Charley’s Cheesesteaks and China Max, with branches of numerous chain restaurants across Winchester Ave. For the perfect family day out or date night you’ve also got the Cinemark Movies 10 here.

10. The Charles and Betty Russell Park Hiking Trail

Hiking Trails

This unfrequented network of trails, about 2.5 miles long, is along the wooded ridge rising behind the city.

The land, encompassing some 50 acres, was donated to the City of Ashland by the Russell family, with the intention of preserving this tranquil patch of nature for residents and visitors.

You can reach the main trailhead with ease from Central Park, with newly installed stairways to help you climb the ridge.

From here you can access eight different marked trails, some loops and some point-to-point, but none more than 1.2 miles in length. The deciduous trees provide a lot of shade in summer, and when they’re bare in winter you’ll get far-reaching views from this elevation.

11. Malibu Jack’s Ashland

Arcade

For a convenient family day out there’s a branch of this regional chain of family entertainment center a few minutes out of town at the Camp Landing Entertainment District.

In one cavernous building you’ll find a karting track, a laser tag arena, 18 holes of miniature golf, an arcade, inflatables, a 16-lane bowling alley, an indoor playground for younger kids and several indoor rides.

Entry is free at Malibu Jack’s and you’ll add money to your “Play Card” for attractions and games, with discounts depending on how many “Malibu Bucks” you buy.

12. Summer Motion

4th of July Celebration Fireworks

Culminating on July 4, Summer Motion is a multi-day festival held in Ashland since 1989, but with roots going back to the 1977 Tri-State Fair & Regatta.

The festival is best known for its excellent free concerts, for a crowd-pleasing variety of genres including rock, country, motown, contemporary Christian music and many more.

Among the famous past performers are Billy Ray Cyrus, Grand Funk Railroad, Kool & the Gang, Micky Dolenz, Kenny Loggins and Styx.

Typically the event gets underway at Central Park, with food vendors, games, music, inflatables and a car and motorcycle cruise-in.

Then as July 4 approaches there are consecutive evenings of live music on the big stage at the Port of Ashland, together with food vendors, carnival rides and the fireworks on the 4th to wrap it all up.

13. Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area

Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area

Across the river in Ohio, the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area is the main visitor destination for the Wayne National Forest, which occupies much of the southern tip of the state.

The lake in question covers 143 acres and is bounded by steep wooded hills offering wonderful overlooks.

There’s a beach and swim area on the lake, as well as several picnic areas, two family campgrounds and a group campground on the shore.

At the boat dock you’ll also find Kountry Kayaks, with a fleet of kayaks, canoes and paddle wheelers (between May and September) for a paddling trip on the lake.

14. Festival of Trees and Trains

Christmas Tree

One truly heartwarming annual event in Ashland is the Festival of Trees and Trains, across ten days during the holiday season.

The festival raises funds for the Paramount Woman’s Association, supporting the community-oriented education department of the Paramount Arts Center.

Inside the auditorium are scores of beautifully decorated christmas trees, competing for awards and sure to bring plenty of festive cheer.

Throughout the event there’s a schedule of children’s activities (including a visit from Santa), great entertainment, delicious food and local shopping promotions.

15. Tri-State Escape

Escape Room

Just across the road from the Paramount Arts Center is a highly-rated escape room attraction, and the largest of its kind in Eastern Kentucky.

If you’re new to this kind of thing, your group will have an hour to solve a sequence of intuitively designed puzzles, and you’ll need to use a mix of teamwork, logic and lateral thinking to find the clues to escape.

Tri-State Escape has six rooms, each with an immersive theme, be it mild horror (The Haunting at Winchester Manor), Western (Jail Break) or adventure (Escape from Egypt).
