Review of Swift 40

Swift 40

Basic specs.

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 6 berths, a galley and toilet facility.

Cockpit

The boat equipped with a ketch rig. A ketch rig is generally considered easier to handle, because the sails are smaller, and because it can sail on most points to the wind with one sail completely taken down for repair or while reefing. The sail configuration of a ketch allows for better comfort and stability when sailing downwind or on a broad reach.

The Swift 40 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.60 - 1.70 meter (5.25 - 5.55 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Swift 40 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD21 diesel engine

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Swift 40 is 1.81, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Swift 40 is about 270 kg/cm, alternatively 1515 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 270 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1515 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 14.57

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 42m 2 (452 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 11.9 m(38.9 feet)14 mm(0.55 inch)
Genoa sheet11.9 m(38.9 feet)14 mm(0.55 inch)
Mainsheet 29.7 m(97.4 feet)14 mm(0.55 inch)

Does anybody have any info about a 1979 Sparkman and Stevens designed Swift 40 cc ketch. I think it might be built by Swallow Craft in South Korea. Any sources of additional infomational would be helpfull. Thanks

swallow craft We have just made an offer on a swallow craft 33 motor sailer 1979. Will be researching the builders. They seem to make military boats for various inland water way coast guard patrol functions. Whew... grammar is such a chore. max

Boat: S&S 40
again..I bought 'Arabella' a S&S 40 (Swift) , ..the yacht came from the US some 4 years ago and was in ..she had two Australian owners and neither of them used her to any extend.
The last month I started to sort out redundant and broken ..so far all good. the biggest problem with most older is lack of ..and various owners keep adding without much thought of how to get to it later..for instance there is the fresh ..mounted inside the compartment ..to get to it one has to remove the stairs, bay front cover all the house , and diverse ..lay on your belly and think small..the could not bolt the down because one can only reach the with one hand! why not install it under the seat which has lots of unused space? Beats me ..time to get to the pump 6 hrs!!

I bought most and auto pilot in the US via eBay..compared to Australian prices they are about 40% cheaper..delivery was fast and trouble free.
Happy sailing!

in QLD.
Steve & I own a 1979 S&S 40 swift , same as Arabella. We bought her in QLD in 2003 from a guy who sailed her from . We sailed to South , lived on her for 3 yrs, moved to Western Australia where we are completing a major , she's now Aussie registered as Daisy. She had bad , we discovered her was full of as well as lead and foam, someone had fitted the bildge pump in the engine room, by screwing straight into the expandable foam inside the keel! So years of water had leaked in. Took a year to dry her properly inside and out. Nasty! If you need any information, we have all original , etc. Although, we have replaced her with a . We've also replaced all the & hatches with stainless, and her chainplates, the original ones had pitting. I'll some pics as soon as I out how to. Pauline & Steve

as well as up the engine bay. Engine runs fine just need a good clean up, engine beds and so on need some modifications as well.

Silly question, how on earth did you get the engine out? Short of cutting out the floor?

Seems to me they installed the engine and built the around it.
As far a s goes there is no problem except a spot at the , the is fine.
Sorry to hear about the water logged , a pain in the rear to get it drained and dried out I would imagine.

. Had to raise the boom so that I could stand up under it.
I wondered if you got the engine out? I have thought about it and thought a long strong beam hooked to a crane coming through the forward part of the cockpit , about 10 inches back, one end over the engine, connected to it, the other end of the beam being held down by some hefty bodies. Then the engine and walk it forward the 10 inches, set it down, and move the crane connection back on the beam. Gradually it forward until under the .
A little tedious, but couldn't think of a different way, without cutting up the .
I am interested if you got it out and how.

the engine clear of the beds. My thought was to cut two 2' holes, above the center of the engine, through the cockpit floor, just forward of the .
Then I can attach soft slings either side to the engine. I would use an A frame in the cockpit an a chain block to lift the engine clear of the . After that lower the on a plank and slide it out forward through the space behind the ladder.
It might be a good idea to strip the engine of the , starter and maybe the as well while it is still in the boat.
The 3' holes in the cockpit floor are easily sealed after one finishes.
Which ever way I look at it its a pain.
All my previous centre cockpit yachts had removable cockpit floors...so any major work inside the engine bay was easy.
On the Swift one has to be 5' tall and skinny to reach anything inside the engine room.

39hp 3 cylinder.
To remove the old 4108 we dismantled it into man handle-able pieces and carried it out. The block wasn't really man handle-able and was right on the limit of what 2 blokes could carry- it was actually over the limit and me and the other fella nearly busted our phoofer valves.

To install the new engine we removed the stairs, then cover behind the stairs. Then the companionway hatch. The and was also removed.
We had to tilt the engine a bit while lowering it down to get it through the companionway hatch and sat it on the . I placed an A frame ladder over the hole in the centre of the cockpit (where the pedestal normally sits) and hung a 1 ton soft sling down through the hole. I placed a beam over the companionway with another 1 ton soft sling and hooked up 2 800kg comealongs to shackles on the lifting points on the .
I removed the second and my wife and I monkey swung it into the engine room. Once again a bit of tilting was required but we had good control with the comealongs.

It worked perfectly.
No damage and the engine is sitting on the modified beds.
Although re-powering isn't a small job!
We have photographed the whole job from start to finish including the modifications we have done to install a new inner cutlass bearing complete with mechanical seal and line boring the stern tube to align it to the beds. Now everything is perfect!
If you would like more info and pictures let me know.
Cheers
Steve

We're in the market for a new boat. What can you tell me about the Sparkman & Stephens, 40' Center cockpit, Ketch rigged yacht.

JohnShannon

Sailboatdata.com is your friend http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=5692 Also Carls sailing calculator http://www.tomdove.com/sailcalc/sailcalc.html lets you compare boats So it is heavy for its length, not a lot of sail area. Looks like a kind of classic heavy cruising boat

shemandr

I hate to see this post drop off the page without others getting a chance to see it... If you haven't you should google Sparkman & Stephens. This is an old an venerable design firm. On Sailboatdata.com you will likely find at the bottom of the page for the Swift 40 a link to other designs by this firm. See here: http://sailboatdata.com/view_designer.asp?designer_id=12 . I feel safe in saying a boat designed by this firm has a good pedigree. Builders who have used these designs are Swan and Tartan. Different builders will have different quality standards depending on their market focus. The Swift appears tubby to me. But that may be what you want. It will not have the room that a modern 40' boat will and it will be more slow. But if well found, I'd guess it could take you where ever you want to go. You might be able to find more info on the North Star 80/20, which according to SBD is the same design.

Navigating the Waters: How to select the best boat insurance

Owning a boat brings a sense of adventure and freedom, but it also comes with responsibilities, one of which is securing adequate insurance coverage.

We love sharing the  boating lifestyl e with our family and friends. This love manifests itself in every BENETEAU built in any one of our many manufacturing facilities worldwide. Every  BENETEAU sailboat and powerboat  on the water reflects the best efforts of the finest architects, designers, and craftsmen along with the highest quality materials and the latest innovations. BENETEAU has been building  sailing yachts  and  powerboats  for all types of boating practices since 1884. Would you like to  buy a new boat ? Leisure boating, short trips, cruising, competitive sailing – whatever type of sailing you envision, there is a boat to suit you at your  local BENETEAU dealer .

BENETEAU: A LONG STORY THAT BEGAN IN 1884

The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 136 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe.

Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies.

WIDE RANGE OF SAILING YACHTS AND POWERBOATS

Sailboat Range

We built our first sailboats over 135 years ago and many things have changed since then. The oak we once relied on has been replaced with strong but lightweight resin and carbon fiber. Where canvas once caught the wind, now it’s Kevlar and Vectran. We’ve transformed dark, confining saloons and cabins into bright, open living spaces. And the list of innovations in hull design and navigation continues to grow at a rapidly increasing pace.

However, some things haven’t changed and never will. Benjamin BENETEAU’s philosophy of building the strongest, safest, most beautiful boats on the water is alive and well. The BENETEAU family’s pride in craftsmanship and passion for performance can easily be recognized in every FIRST, FIRST SE, FIGARO, OCEANIS, and OCEANIS YACHT built today.

Knowing what to keep and what to change – that’s why BENETEAU continues to set the bar in sailing.

Powerboat Range

In North America, we might be considered by some to be a late-comer to the powerboat market, but in fact, we’ve always been a major force in it. As with most things, we have our founder, Benjamin BENETEAU, to thank. He was one of the first to put a petrol engine on his fishing trawlers in the early 1900s, thus changing the French commercial fishing fleet forever.

His successors found that power was a perfect fit for the bold, new hull materials they were pioneering in the ’60s. Since then, new technologies in propulsion have always found their way aboard a BENETEAU first, and power has long been part of our equation for success.

Today, there’s a BENETEAU powerboat or motor yacht for whatever you’re looking for – from casual cruising to long-distance adventuring, from fishing and diving to water skiing. They can be found on the open ocean, coastlines, harbors, lakes, and rivers. There’s a whole world to discover out there, and there’s no better way to discover it than at the helm of a BENETEAU powerboat, trawler or motor yacht.

As well as active design and build support (five visits to the yards for the the current boat), OC continue to update and conduct tender processes with yards, sail-makers and suppliers worldwide and have a considerable amount of information and costings that allow our boats to be built anywhere in the world. For those sailors and owners who have not commissioned their own boat before we have produced a useful guide describing the design and build process. It answers many of the questions you're likely to have about commissioning the build of a custom or semi-custom race boat.

This site offers a home for all owners and sailors of the Swift 18 to swap advice and ideas, as well as post pictures and files relating to the lovable swift.

We have many plans for the future, all depending on how this group grows, but the main objective is for everyone to get the best out of their Swifts and enjoy sharing experiences good bad and scary!

The Swift 18 first appeared at the 1981 Southampton Boat show and was designed as a fast yet comfortable trailer sailor conforming with the French Micro Cupper rules. The boat is virtually unsinkable with enough built in buoyancy to float if swamped, even with 3 crew aboard.

The first Swift (either a prototype or number 1) was an aluminium boat made from sheet aluminium - hence the chine hull. The original intention was that all boats should be aluminium but this proved impractical and this boat was then used to make the moulds.

The original manufacturer was 'John Charnley Associates' (JCA) who built boats from 1982 to 1985. These were the 1 to 218 series and at the end of this period they were built at Shamrock Quay in Southampton by a company trading under the name of "Swiftcraft" (still John's company).  These boats all had tapered masts.

In October 1985, John and his wife Caroline sold the business to a businessman who wanted to give the business to his son in order to entice him back from Australia. This did not work and eventually the business was bought by Honnor Marine at Totnes Devon. They built the 300 series of boats - different toerails, non-tapered mast etc - a bit of a cost reduced version. Honnor Marine started, on taking the production and ownership over from Swiftcraft, with natural aluminium toerails, then evidently bought a job-lot of black toerail, finally then produced a new top mould with a moulded-in toerai.  Honnor Marine built about 35 to 40 boats. Roger Marsh who originally bought a Swift, was taken with the boat and for some time was a member of the association. He had an interest in Marine matters and owned "Marlin International". Eventually (around 1988 or so) Roger bought the rights, moulds and materials from Honnor Marine and began to market the 400 series of boats back in Southampton. He reversed some of the cost reductions which Honnor Marine had made but continued with the moulded-in toerail.  The 400-Series boats reverted to the original as-designed weight of hull layup rather than Honnor Marine's heavier hulls and went back to a tapered mast.  Only a small number of the 400 series boats were built. All were white with two-tone blue trim divided by a white band, 'Swift 18' or 'Swift 20' marked prominently and a smaller white '400-series' superimposed on the trim aft.  At some point Roger discussed destroying the moulds, as he could no longer store them anywhere.

The moulds then reappeared in Norfolk in 2005 and were bought by Mike Cooper who then built his own 500 series boat.

The boat has 2 full-length single berths aft with a large double forward, a sink, 2 burner cooker and room for a loo. With 4' 4" head room in the cabin the accommodation is surprisingly comfortable. It also comes complete with a lifting keel which leaves only 3 inches exposed when raised making the boat easy to launch and retrieve from the trailer. With a little ingenuity the mast can be raised and lowered single handed.

Reports at the time of the Swifts introduction considered her to have excellent and vice free sailing qualities, in a nasty Force 6/7 and with 2 reefs in the main she stayed light on the helm, was well balanced and galloped along like a racehorse (BPO April 82).

Swiftsure 40 (Seaborn)

Swiftsure 40 (Seaborn) is a 39 ′ 11 ″ / 12.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Ben Seaborn and built by Blanchard Boat Co. starting in 1947.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The Swift 40 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel. The keel is made of lead.
