Blue: 160m Lürssen superyacht delivered
Related articles, superyacht directory.
Formerly known as Project Blue, the 160 metre superyacht has been delivered as Blue . She left the Lürssen facilities on Saturday and is currently on her maiden voyage to Malta.
First launched in February 2022, the yacht is now the fifth largest yacht in the world in terms of LOA.
Terence Disdale has designed both the interior and exterior of the 15,320 GT superyacht, making full use of the yacht's 22.5 metre beam and generous decks.
In a statement, the yard has said that an enhanced environmental focus was a key driver behind the build of Blue . The yacht is one of the largest in the world to be equipped with diesel-electric power hybrid propulsion and she features PTI/PTO units that can be used for either electric propulsion (slow speeds) or for generating electrical energy to operate the vessel at higher speeds.
Blue also features an innovative after-treatment system and a wastewater treatment plan which is equipped with new membrane technology. This allows treated wastewater to be safely disposed of in "drinking water quality", according to the yard.
“To execute such a comprehensive project, an excellent team is necessary,” said Lürssen managing partner, Peter Lürssen. “We are very proud of Blue as yet another statement of Lürssen’s ability and desire to build yachts that meet all of our exacting owners’ requirements, guided by our core focus of expert engineering, beautiful design and being a proud market leader in developing sustainable technologies.”
In terms of features, the yacht has a pair of helicopter landing sites; a large helideck at the bow and a smaller helipad aft. Each of the four upper decks features a large al fresco entertaining area and there is a swimming platform connected to a beach club, plus forward stateroom balconies on either side.

The 525-Foot Lürssen Superyacht ‘Blue’ Is The Fifth Largest Ever Made
Bigger isn’t always better, but when it comes to superyachts, size certainly counts. That’s exactly what the new owner of the Lürssen-built superyacht Blue are getting, which has just set sail for the first time as one of the largest vessels to leave the boatyard at 525 feet long (160 metres).
After successfully completing its sea trials at the end of last month, Blue was officially released from the German yard to its owners, who are likely looking forward to enjoying everything the behemoth vessel has to offer. This includes not one, but two separate helipads, an enormous swim platform next to the beach club, and much more.

Powering the Blue is an in-house designed and very efficient Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion Concept, which consists of two diesel engines that drive two controllable pitch propellers at high speeds, while electric propulsion is able to kick in at slower speeds. It’s also equipped with a state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system that is aimed to keep vibration, noise and nitrogen oxide levels as low as possible.
Blue is currently following a course to the Mediterranean from the Lürssen yard, where its owners are patiently waiting for the superyacht to arrive and set sail once again.

The 160-metre yacht BLUE has been given a contemporary exterior and a traditional, fresh interior design, both by Terence Disdale Design. Efficiency and the desire to be as environmentally friendly as possible were key drivers for the technology on board. BLUE is equipped with a highly efficient Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion Concept developed by Lürssen’s own engineering specialists. BLUE also has an electric Azimuth Pod Drive, which in electric mode can be used separately, or when the PTI units are engaged, with the two propeller shafts. In order to generate less noise and vibration and reduce nitrogen oxide levels, BLUE is completed with a state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system. Furthermore, the wastewater treatment plant is equipped with new membrane technology that allows the treated wastewater to be safely disposed of in ‘drinking water quality’.
