Yacht Club Resort – Part One

hidden mickey yacht club globe

The Yacht & Beach Club are two separate resorts with distinctively different motifs. Yet, it’s difficult to speak of one without mentioning the other. Much of this has to do with the fact that both hotels are housed within one large building and many of the facilities are shared between the two.

The Yacht & Beach Club resort was designed by Robert A.M. Stern of New York and was built during Michael Eisner’s tenure as CEO. The Yacht Club opened on November 5, 1990 and the Beach Club opened a couple of weeks later on November 19th. The Yacht & Beach Club are considered deluxe resorts.

A casual visitor might not notice the theming differences between the two resorts, but they are clearly evident if you take the time to look. The Yacht Club (painted gray with white trim) has a formal ambiance and was inspired by resorts that might have been found on Martha’s Vineyard during the early 20th century. The Beach Club (painted blue with white trim) is far more playful in style and was inspired by cottages found in Newport Beach. I’m embarrassed to admit, it took me several years before I noticed that the Beach Club sits on a sandy beach while the Yacht Club has a marina. Duh.

I’m going to start this article discussing the Yacht Club.

Yacht Club Logo

If you arrive during the morning or afternoon hours, you will be greeted by a cast member decked out in nautical attire. He looks like he just might skipper a yacht of his own. This gentleman is extremely knowledgeable about Walt Disney World and can answer many of your questions regarding restaurants and services. He can also help you find your way around the resort. Research has shown that greeters can positively influence a person’s perception of a business and Disney now uses these amiable cast members at a number of their resorts.

Yacht Club Greeter

The globe found in the center of the lobby was created by Walt Disney Imagineering and is reminiscent of those of the 19th century. If you look closely, you’ll discover fictitious names and a hidden Mickey. For more information about this globe, just ask the skipper.

Globe

The two story lobby of the Yacht Club is formal without being stuffy. As you would expect, a nautical theme is used to help tell the story. Comfortable sofas and chairs have been arranged to create a number of intimate conversation areas and fresh flowers accent many of the tables. Be sure to check out the two model ships. The detailing is exquisite. And kids should be encouraged to find the chest-of-drawers which features name plates for Mickey, Minnie, and other characters.

Yacht Lobby

When entering the resort, the check-in desk is located to the right and the concierge desk is located to the left. There is also a seating area with a TV playing Disney cartoons to keep the little ones entertained while checking in.

Check-in Desk

The Yacht Club has 630 rooms with an average room size of 380 square feet. Most rooms feature two queen beds and a sofa/daybed that can accommodate an additional person (the room can sleep five). Some rooms have one king bed.

The nautical theme is continued in the rooms but does not overpower. The walls are covered with white wallpaper featuring a small blue design. The headboard, nightstand, and credenza are painted cream. The carpet is blue and brown and the drapes continue this color scheme.

The rooms at the Yacht Club are using a “spa” type treatment when making the beds. Instead of a bedspread, a second top sheet encases the blankets and a decorative blue throw is draped across the foot of the bed.

Please note, the room I stayed in was a corner room. This allowed for two extra windows (and a much brighter room). These extra windows are located to each side of the credenza. Most rooms only have one window/door at the far end of the sleeping area. Keep this in mind when viewing my pictures.

Standard Yacht Room

The credenza holds a refrigerator, four drawers, and a number of shelves. In the Club Level rooms, a DVD player can also be found on the credenza. Because this was a corner room with extra windows, the flat screen TV sits on the credenza. In most rooms, the TV is mounted on the wall.

The daybed has so many overstuffed pillows that it’s necessary to remove a few before using this piece of furniture as a sofa.

Credenza

One feature I really like is the small shelf attached to the wall next to one of the beds. In essence, it’s an extra nightstand. This is a nice touch.

Nightstand Shelf

A desk with a pull-out computer table is ample in size and provides easy access to electrical outlets and high-speed internet connections.

Note, Disney is currently testing Wi-Fi in a number of their resorts. The Yacht & Beach are on this list. I used this Wi-Fi service and was very pleased with the ease of connection and the speed. At the moment, this connection is free. However, I have no idea what the future may hold and if charges are on the horizon.

Desk

On the desk is a very cute Mickey Mouse lamp. At one time, this lamp could be purchased at the Fittings & Fairing shop found off of the lobby. However, it is no longer for sale. (I’m glad I purchased mine when I did.)

Mickey Mouse Lamp

The balcony is decent sized – not huge, but typical for a Disney resort. Two chairs and a table provide a nice place to have a cup of coffee in the morning before you start your day.

Yacht Balcony

In the entry/hallway are a closet and another chest of drawers. A coffee maker and cups are located atop the chest and an iron, ironing board, luggage rack, and small wall safe can be found in the closet. All in all, the Yacht Club rooms offer plenty of storage space.

Chest of Drawers

I burst out laughing when I went to throw away a bit of trash. At the bottom of all the trash receptacles is a small paper insert advertising the Yacht & Beach Club. Talk about an elegant detail.

Trash Can Insert

The bathroom is designed for efficiency. Two basins are nice for parties of four and an extra marble shelf provides plenty of counter space for toiletries. A make-up mirror is attached to the wall (Club Level only) and a hairdryer can be found either on the wall or in a cloth bag on the shelving beneath the sinks. The shower and toilet are located in a separate room. The shower/tub is plenty large enough and the control is easy to use. (Sometime shower fixtures baffle me in their complexity.) There is also a telephone next to the toilet. The room is stocked with five fluffy towels and the toilet paper is of good quality.

Sink and Vanity

Here is a two minute video of a standard Yacht Club room.

The fifth floor of the resort is designated as Club Level and features 20 suites and 71 standard rooms. Access to this level requires a special room key.

If you have booked a Club Level room and are arriving by car, the cast member at the resort’s entrance will notify the appropriate personnel when you check in at the guard shack. Once your reach the porte cochere, a Club Level cast member will greet you by name and escort you to a special check-in desk located on the fifth floor. As is so often the case with Disney, it’s the small details that make things special. Even a dish of salt water taffy, an Atlantic City favorite of the 19th century, is on hand while checking in.

Yacht Club Main Entrance

Guests staying on the Club Level are given a yellow room/charge key/card rather than the blue card designated for the rest of the resort. To access the fifth floor, one of these room keys must be inserted into a special slot found above the elevator buttons.

Club Level Room Key

The fifth floor check-in desks offer full concierge services (7am to 10pm). If you need restaurant or show reservations, these cast members will do their utmost to see that you get what you want. If you need directions, transportation, or anything else, just stop by with your request. Chances are good these folks will be able to help you.

Also available to Club Level guests is a lounge, the Regatta Club. This comfortable area features cozy sofas, chairs, and tables, a spacious balcony, newspapers, and a television.

Club Level Lounge

Offered in the Regatta Club are a wide array of complimentary food and drink. A continental breakfast is offered each morning. This includes cereals, assorted breads and pastries, fruit, juices, coffee, and teas. In the afternoon, cookies and other tempting snacks are available. And in the evening, different hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, antipasto, cheese plates, and desserts are rotated throughout the week. A selection of sodas is available all day and wine, beer, and cordials are offered in the evening – all included in your room price. Service is as follows:

Coffee: 6:30am to 7am Continental Breakfast: 7am to 10:30am Snacks & Soft Drinks: 11:30am to 3pm Tea Time: 3pm to 4pm Hors d’oeuvres & Wine: 5pm to 7pm Desserts & Cordials: 8pm to 10pm

Children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult when in the Regatta Club.

Club Level Food Counter

For the most part, the Regatta Club is a good place to “escape” and enjoy some leisurely down time. However, mornings can be quite hectic and tables difficult to secure. Many folk use the lounge to grab a quick breakfast before heading to the parks.

Club Level rooms also receive nightly turndown service with chocolates on the pillow, bathrobes, and a morning copy of USA Today.

Here is a 1½ minute video showcasing the Yacht Club fifth floor Club Level check-in desks and lounge.

That’s it for Part One of the Yacht Club. Check back tomorrow for Part Two.

Hi Jack, hoping you can solve a mystery…in Yacht club Libby the chest of drawers says Nancy, Kim, Angela, Holly,Kirk, and Svenia and no CMs seemed to be able to answer why. Nobody else I’ve asked seems to know either. Any ideas? Thanks

Jack’s Answer:

I have also wonder who these names belong to. You know they aren’t random and they MUST have some significance. But I’m sorry, I can’t help you. My best guess is that they belong to the architects/Imagineers who designed the Yacht Club.

Maybe I am a little slow on this, but what is club level and what does it require to get it?

The Club Level is located on the fifth floor of both the Yacht and Beach. Only Club Level guests can access this floor. The rooms offer extras like DVD player, bathrobes, and deluxe turndown service. Concierge service is also available on this floor so you don’t have to wait in line down in the lobby. But the main feature are the lounges. As I mentioned in my blog, nice sitting rooms have been created for relaxing and enjoying an array of food and drink available all day long. Anyone can book a Club Level room if they’re willing to spend the extra it required.

We did some exploring through the Beach Club during our last visit (we ended up in EPCOT during the Food and Wine Festival on the second to last Saturday–BAD IDEA–ended up walking from EPCOT to Beach Club to escape) and I’m very excited to see you’ve decided to cover these two resorts–I always recommend your resort blogs to friends who are indecisive on where to stay.

PS, love that you changed the Dining Plan code to MIC-1928 when you blocked it out–nice touch lol!

This is my kids favorite because of the sandy bottom pool. I love the smell when you walk into the lobby. Lets me know that I am once again home.

My kids have been greeted by name coming off the Magical Express and given stickers. Love the Disney magic that greets you at the door. I will have to have them search for the Drawer with Mickey’s name on it next time we are there.

Hi Jack! I love how detailed you are. It almost makes me feel like I’m actually there. But, sadly, I’m outside of cold Chicago. BRRR! This is one of 3 luxury resorts I have not stayed at. Looking forward to trying it though…

Worth looking forward to, as usual.

The “skipper” greeter guy — am I making stuff up, or was this the same man for a couple of decades straight before he recently retired? Possibly named Art? Arthur? Or am I inventing things again?

Jack’s Comment:

Unfortunately, the only picture I have of the Skipper is slightly out of focus so I can’t make out his name tag. Sorry.

I’ve heard that the Yacht Club is the least popular of the Deluxes and rooms are often offered to travel agents to increase occupency. Is this true and if so why?

I have never heard this. That doesn’t mean it’s not true, just that I have never heard this. However, given a choice between the Beach, Yacht, and Boardwalk, I would choose the Yacht last. It’s not that I think it’s inferior in any way, but it’s the furthest from Epcot, which I usually walk to. In the Yacht’s favor, almost all of the rooms have decent balconies. That is NOT the case with the Beach.

Great blog Jack we like the Yacht club alot the pool is awesome and the proximity to epcot makes it a great place to stay. The Character breakfast buffett at the Cape May Cafe is terrific the food offerings are the best selection for everyone in the family. I finally found the hidden mickey on the globe during our last visit. Valet parking is a must as the parking lot could be quite a walk.

We stayed at the Yacht Club for the first time in August. I had done online check-in and had given an arrival time of 10 a.m. We were running a little late and I was surprised to receive a call from a cast member at 10:30 a.m. informing us that our room was ready and they were looking forward to seeing us.

After obtaining our parking pass from the guard at the gate, we parked and walked to the entrance and were greeted BY NAME by the same gal in your picture! She escorted us inside and completed the check-in process. When our key did not unlock our room door, I returned to the registration desk and she profusely apologized, recut the keys and personally escorted us to our room to make certain the new keys worked.

We had made a reservation that morning for Yachtsman Steakhouse, and when we arrived for dinner we were seated at a lovely window table that seemed to have been reserved for us, since the rest of the tables in the area were full.

All of the cast members at this resort were extremely hospitable and friendly. I would expect this high level of service when staying Club Level; however, my family was staying in a standard garden-view room.

The Yacht Club was the only Deluxe Resort we had not tried before; given the room amenities, the wonderful Stormalong Bay area and our personal attention, we will be returning!

Another great blog!

Is there an extra charge for a corner room?

Too funny about the trash can! I also have always thought a phone in the bathroom was strange. I have never had a call so important that couldn’t wait until I was done with the facilities! LOL.

Good news, there is no extra charge for a corner room — something I’ll request in the future. But keep in mind, Disney cannot guarantee a specific room, only a category.

Hi Jack! Loved reading about the Yacht Club. We went and stayed for Christmas as a family in 1994 and it was great to reminisce, as I haven’t been back to the Yacht Club since.

I’m hopeful a review of the Beach Club will be up next…? 🙂 We leave in 19 days for a 6-night stay there, so I’d love to read about it from you beforehand!

hey jack great blog on the Yacht Club. it looks like a wonderful hotel to stay at and i love the nautical theme that it has. can’t wait for part 2 and as always keep up the great work.

Jack, the Yacht Club is our favorite resort and thanks to your videos I can show other folks why. We stayed at the club level in October, a splurge, and it will be awfully hard to do anything less in the future. Looking forward to Part II.

Long time reader here. We stayed Regatta Club at the Yacht Club for 8 nights in Sep 2010. I must say that I did not think that much of Yacht Club myself. It just did not feel “Disney” and the lounge was the smallest of any Disney resort that we have stayed. Flying Fish Cafe had a much better steak than Yachtsman Steakhouse. Yacht Club was okay but once was enough. Next trip it’s back to Contemporary for us.

V/R, Mike Moody/Summerville, SC

You are 100% correct. The New York steak offered at the Flying Fish is outstanding. In fact, some time ago, I ate at the Flying Fish one night and at the Yachtsman Steakhouse the next. I had the New York both times. There was no comparison. The Flying Fish steak was 10 times better.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know that Disney had a Yacht and Beach Club Resort. Now that I have looked into it, Disney has a TON of resorts. I have been boating a lot over the last year and have a love for the water I didn’t know existed before. When the pandemic is over, and things get back to normal, my family and I will be heading to Disney’s beach club resort.

Hidden Mickeys at Caribbean Beach and Beach Club

Beaches are the theme this week! In this post, I will cover the Hidden Mickeys at the Caribbean Beach Resort and finish up the Hidden Mickeys at Beach Club.

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

From the Beach Club, head towards the Skyliner station at the International Gateway to Epcot and you will be on a direct line to the Caribbean Beach Resort. The Skyliner is a huge game changer for the Caribbean Beach Resort because it provides easy access to both Hollywood Studios and Epcot. No longer needing to deal with the bus system and during COVID the Skyliner was a great way to socially distance people getting to and form the parks. As the name suggests, this resort has a Caribbean theme and is known for being Walt Disney World’s first moderate resort. As large as this resort is, it only has four “official” Hidden Mickeys in the book. Fortunately, even with the construction that Caribbean Beach underwent in order to make room for the Riviera Resort, all four Hidden Mickeys remain.

Heading first to the main building, Old Port Royale, I walked out towards with body of water known as Barefoot Bay. There is a lighthouse that reads “Barefoot Bay Boatyard” and a classic Hidden Mickey can be found.

On the Grounds

This next one is considered A Real Tuffy , and it does not help that the directions the book gives are no longer accurate as some of the building names have changed. From the new Barbados section, previously known as Trinidad North, walk towards Old Port Royale. Within the concrete, a small imprint of Mickey can be found. I included a close up as well as a wide angle view to get an idea of where to look for this particular Hidden Mickey. You may also notice that I intentionally poured water onto the concrete in an attempt to make it easier to find the Hidden Mickey. I felt like I was in National Treasure 2 pouring water onto the concrete in order to find the next clue to the treasure!

The last two Hidden Mickeys at Caribbean Beach can be found in the feature pool, Fuentes del Morro. The theme of this pool is a colonial Spanish fortress. One Hidden Mickey can be found in the shipwreck play area for children, on the helm of the ship near the wheel. Lastly, by where the slide dumps its riders into the pool, Mickey can be found on the back wall.

Side note, I was noticing while walking around this resort there were bird nests and as I was trying to remember what species of birds they were for, I found a sign. The nests are for the Purple Martins and I know I have seen these nests in Epcot as well. Have you noticed them anywhere else? These birds definitely have a great view of the new Riviera Resort!

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

Now hop back on the Skyliner to finish up the Beach Club. In my last post, I covered the Hidden Mickeys at the Beach Club Villas and will finish this post with the rest of Beach Club. Sadly, many of these Hidden Mickeys have been removed over the years.

Ariel’s

I was not off to a good start with Ariel’s. This space used to be a restaurant; however, the space is now only used for special events. Adjacent to Ariel’s is Martha’s Vineyard Lounge. Here I asked a bartender about the Hidden Mickeys in Ariel’s and they not only confirmed that Ariel’s was not open to the public, but he did not know about the two Hidden Mickeys that were mentioned in the book. He thought that there may be one in the chandelier. One day, I hope to be able to go in and find the two Hidden Mickeys that are described in the book and possibly one in the chandelier as well.

Beach Club Marketplace

Beach Club Marketplace is another location that has sadly lost their Hidden Mickeys. Beach Club Marketplace is the quick service option at the Beach Club. I started taking pictures of Hidden Mickeys almost three years ago. At that time, while the one Hidden Mickey on the picture frame was gone, the carpets with three sand dollars forming a Hidden Mickey still remained. Talking with the Cast Members, they recommended I check out the Solarium for Hidden Mickeys which all of those pictures can be found in my previous post . When the Beach Club had renovations last year, around August through September, the carpet was removed. The Cast Member I spoke to thought that the white picture frame with the gold Hidden Mickey had been moved outside of the quick service location and was used to show the menu (second picture, the menu board to the right hand side). If this was the case, I missed it three years ago and is also no longer there. Lastly, enjoy a bonus Hidden Mickey on their Beach Club Trivia board. This is an awesome idea and allows Cast Members an extra opportunity to interact with guests.

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop

Two more Hidden Mickeys join the category of gone but not forgotten , as Mary Poppins would say. Beaches & Cream is a table service restaurant famous for their ice cream sundaes. All I need is three friends to help tackle the Kitchen Sink! For reference, check out this recipe Disney Parks Blog shared for the Kitchen Sink . The first Hidden Mickey used to be the hamburger press. The Cast Member I spoke with does not believe these are still being used because they got new equipment with the renovation. The second Hidden Mickey used to be in the mural above the seating area formed by onion rings. I have good news. Not only did I capture both of these Hidden Mickeys three years ago, but I was also shown a new Hidden Mickey. On the plexiglass separating the dining room from the kitchen, Mickey can be found formed by Beach balls. I am glad to see that with these renovations Imagineers did take the time to include a new Hidden Mickey.

Cape May Cafe

Another table service restaurant located at the Beach Club, Cape May Cafe pre-COVID used to be a buffet, but is currently being served family-style. Another change since COVID is that Cape May Cafe used to be a character meal for breakfast, but character dining is not currently occurring at this location. Good news is this dining location did open back up on May 18 and I observed lots of plexiglass that had been added, especially between the booths to get ready for their opening. This Hidden Mickey is considered A Real Tuffy , although I am not sure why. As you enter the restaurant, on the right hand side, this Hidden Mickey can be found on a plate with polka dots.

The Hallways have also lost some Hidden Mickeys with renovations. The carpets used to be similar to the ones found in the Beach Club Marketplace, with Hidden Mickeys formed by seashells, bubbles, and beachballs. While there is new carpet from the picture in the book, there are still Hidden Mickeys formed by bubbles throughout the resort.

The next Hidden Mickey in the Hallway is supposed to be found in the wallpaper. Three years ago this wallpaper had been changed and to be fair, when I went recently I did not double check that these Hidden Mickeys were indeed gone.

This next Hidden Mickey is absolutely adorable! Along the walkway around Cape May Cafe, there is a shadow box which contains a sand castle. Waving from the top of the sand castle is a figurine of Mickey.

The final Hidden Mickeys in the Hallways can be both be found in the one painting. Near the back entrance of Cape May Cafe there is a painting of Florida. In each of the corners, there are gold Hidden Mickeys. Along the top of the painting, there are five seashells and each contain a red Hidden Mickey.

The last Hidden Mickey at the Beach Club can be found just off of the main lobby. This is considered A Real Tuffy , and oh boy they are not kidding on this one! I definitely spent a solid 10 minutes just staring at the floor. When I did finally find it, a family with a little girl saw me crouched down attempting to get a good picture. The little girl first stepped right into my shot, then came back to look and see what I had been capturing. She then proceeded to show her father the Hidden Mickey I was taking photos of and I am glad I could share a little magic with her! This Hidden Mickey is located to the right of the lobby, on your way to Beach Club Marketplace. In order to find this elusive Hidden Mickey I used the clue and hint from Hidden Mickeys: Disney World app . From there I was told to look in front of the luggage room door and under a light fixture and I was finally able to find it!

I found one other Hidden Mickey in the new carpet of the lobby. Inside the seashells a red Hidden Mickey can be found. Please also enjoy some photos of my favorite flower, orchids. I do not remember these orchids being in the lobby of the Beach Club, but I could not resist taking some photos!

One last surprise I found at the Beach Club was some extra pixie dust courtesy of Tinker Bell! Very cool, but I do not know why she can be found on the door. If anyone knows, please tell me in the comments!

Toni’s Favorite Hidden Mickey

This concludes the Hidden Mickeys at the beach resorts of Walt Disney World, Caribbean Beach and Beach Club. As I said in my last post, Beach Club has many pros, but Caribbean Beach definitely has an advantage in my mind because of the Skyliner access. My favorite Hidden Mickey between these two resorts would have to be the Hidden Mickey that was found in the lobby’s marble floor. Even though this was a real tough one to find, it is very rewarding when you are actually able to find it and share it with others.

Thank you for joining me, I will see you next week. Any requests on Disney resorts or areas of the theme parks you would like me to cover next, please leave in the comments.

1) Roy O. Disney (not to be confused with Roy E. Disney) 2) Nine Old Men 3) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (who would want to watch a full length animated movie?) 4) Elias 5) Disneyland (four days before the official opening)

1) That is correct, Roy E. was the son of Roy O. and nephew to Walt.

What about the bonus question, in what cartoon short did Walt provide the voice of Mickey for the last time?

Mickey Visit – Ultimate Disney Planning Guide

Hidden Mickeys at Disney World – Find Them All!

Hidden Mickey Harambe Market

If you ask any Disney World aficionado about Hidden Mickeys, they’ll more than likely be able to name you their top 5 – and name you a few Hidden Mickeys at Disneyland .

Everyone knows what makes up the shape of Mickey’s head: 1 larger circle to form his head and 2 smaller circles to form his ears. But what makes Hidden Mickeys so special is the ability for the Hidden Mickey to subtly make up anything. Mickey can be hidden in wallpaper, paint, within plants, in the sidewalk, etc. In fact, finding Hidden Mickeys have been such a fan-favorite activity at both Disneyland and Disney World for so many years that there are books, websites, and even social media accounts dedicated to showcasing the most iconic and hardest-to-find Hidden Mickeys!

Being a local to Walt Disney World, I want to give you a list of my favorite Hidden Mickeys across the Walt Disney World Resorts, including the theme parks, resorts, and beyond!

In this planning guide:

Hidden Mickey: A Brief History

EPCOT Flower and Garden

Believe it or not, Hidden Mickeys actually trace their way back to the planning days of EPCOT back in the 1970s and 1980s.

EPCOT was originally planned to be without any of the “Fab Five:” Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto. This was because the combination of alcohol and Disney characters were believed to be improper. Yet, Disney Imagineers saw this as a challenge and found clever ways to still sneak Mickey Mouse into the theme park. Even as EPCOT grew and eventually included the Fav Five in the theme park, the tradition of the Hidden Mickey was so well-established at that point.

The Hidden Mickey quickly became a staple of all theme park designing since then.

What Makes up a Hidden Mickey?

Hidden Mickey Japan Pavilion

With how subtle Hidden Mickeys can be, it’s not surprising that some Hidden Mickeys that guests claim to be true Hidden Mickeys might not be interpreted as true ones by other guests.

For the purposes of this article, we’ll go by the definition provided by the Hidden Mickey Guy himself, Steven Barrett. The Hidden Mickey is “a partial or complete impression of Mickey Mouse placed by the Imagineers and artists to blend into the designs of Disney attractions, hotels, restaurants, and other areas.”

The thing is, a Hidden Mickey can take different forms. While the most common is made up of 1 large circle to make up Mickey’s head and 2 smaller circles of equal size to make up his ears, other Hidden Mickeys include a side or angled profile of Mickey’s face and head. Others include a side profile of his entire body, a full-body frontal silhouette, a detailed picture of his face or body, or even a 3-dimensional Mickey. To keep it simple, any of these will count as Hidden Mickeys and anything different will not count.

So what are we waiting for? Let’s find some Hidden Mickeys!

Where to Find Hidden Mickeys

Hidden Mickey Harambe Market

Since the first Hidden Mickeys were placed into EPCOT, there have been many that have stayed and countless others that have faded into history.

For this article, we’ll focus on the Hidden Mickeys you’re more than likely to find time and time again when you visit Disney World. That way, you’ll always have something fun to look forward to! What makes some of these challenging is that some of these Hidden Mickeys are on rides and attractions that you have a split second to spot.

So, hunt away!

Adventureland

  • Jungle Cruise : Toward the end of this attraction, as you near the end of the dark temple, you will see a broken pillar on your left. What looks like a normal broken section of the pillar actually makes up the outline of Mickey!
  • Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse: As you approach the top of the tree, look toward the tree’s trunk and you’ll spot a lighter spot that makes up Mickey’s head and ears.
  • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin: Between this fun attraction and the Agrabah Bazaar, make sure to look on the ground as it’s pressed with plenty of jewelry. One of these pieces of jewelry has an imprint of Mickey on it!

Frontierland

  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: As you near the end of the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness and your train brakes, look to your right for 3 gears that make up this classic Hidden Mickey.
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: As you’re in the cave surrounded by countless jewels, make sure to look at the gems near Dopey. This classic Hidden Mickey is formed by 3 of these gems!

Fantasyland:

  • Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid: While this iconic Hidden Mickey is best seen on Mickey and Minnie’s birthday as the light shines on the rockwork at the perfect angle to make a Hidden Mickey shadow, you can actually see the outline of Mickey on the edge of the rockwork itself! About half way into the queue, make sure to turn around and look up at the edge of the rockwork to spot this Hidden Mickey!
  • It’s a Small World: In the Africa room, guests can find this Hidden Mickey on the leaves of the purple vine just before passing under the elephant – each leaf is a Hidden Mickey!

Liberty Square

  • Haunted Mansion: This classic Hidden Mickey is also shared at Haunted Mansion in Disneyland! Find this one in the ballroom scene on the dinner table, made up of 1 large plates and 2 smaller plates. Be on the lookout each time you ride though, because this one can move around!
  • Memento Mori: This is the smallest Hidden Mickey in Disney World! Find this one on the wallpaper surrounding the cash register closest to the shadowboxes. Look closely, because it’s tough to spot!
  • Columbia Harbour House: While this Hidden Mickey has moved around this quick-service restaurant throughout the years, it currently resides on the first floor just as you enter the restaurant. Guests will find this Hidden Mickey on the framed picture made up of 3 circular nautical maps.

Tomorrowland

  • Carousel of Progress: Walt Disney’s famous attraction actually has 2 Hidden Mickeys, both that are in the final Christmas scene. The first is a Mickey nutcracker on the left side of the fireplace mantle, and the second is a Mickey plush behind some of the wrapped gifts under the Christmas tree.
  • Peoplemover: Toward the end of this classic ride, as guests pass a woman getting her hair done, look closely at her belt buckle and you’ll see this classic Hidden Mickey.
  • Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin: This easy-to-spot Hidden Mickey is in the queue as guests pass the poster displaying the planets of the Galactic Alliance just before the Buzz Lightyear animatronic. The Pollust Prime landmass forms this Hidden Mickey!

Hidden Mickey American Adventure

Imagination Pavilion

The Land Pavilion

  • Living with the Land: This attraction is chalk-full of Hidden Mickeys – most of them in the greenhouses. Find 1 of them formed by the hose in the pool of tilapia and another formed by metal wiring inside the tube of shrimp. But 1 of my all-time favorites to look for is formed by the matrix of lettuce. Their different colors make the outline of a Hidden Mickey!
  • Soarin’ Over the World/California: Both versions of this popular ride have Hidden Mickeys! In Soarin’ Over the World, this Hidden Mickey is made up of 3 hot air balloons in the Monument Valley scene. In Soarin’ Over California, this Hidden Mickey is on the golfball that flies past guests in the Palm Springs scene. Be sharp though, because these Hidden Mickeys go by quick!

The Seas with Nemo and Friends

  • Entire Area: One classic one is made of rocks on the bottom of the aquarium floor. Another can be found as a classic Mickey Mouse hat on top of one of the sea urchins in the smaller aquarium section!

Mexico Pavilion

  • Grand Fiesta Tour: Find this Hidden Mickey as you approach the stage of our singing Three Caballeros! It’s made up of 3 drums and is on a small floating boat.

The American Adventure

  • Atrium: Make sure to explore the atrium and check out the incredible art on the wall – many which were painted by former Imagineers! One of the paintings depicts a man making a speech. One of the women is sporting a beautiful hat with roses on it, 3 of which make a Hidden Mickey!

  • Kilimanjaro Safaris: One of the most classic Hidden Mickeys in Disney’s Animal Kingdom is in the area housing the flamingos. Look to the bottom of the palm trees and you’ll see a big Hidden Mickey made up of the island!
  • Tamu Tamu Refreshments: Between the entrance of the queue and exit of the seating area, look down at the ground to find a Hidden Mickey made up of a small manhole cover and the rocks surrounding it!

  • Expedition Everest: In the queue of this thrill attraction, guests can spot this Hidden Mickey in the Yeti museum on a photo of a bear standing on its 2 hind legs. Look at the bear’s ears, which form a silhouette of Mickey! FUN FACT: Another cool Hidden Mickey is actually made of a large portion of this ride’s track! Look it up on the map in the My Disney Experience app to see it!
  • Maharajah Jungle Trek: Guests walking through this self-guided tour can find a Hidden Mickey just before entering the aviary. On the carving, one of the men has earrings on, one of which shows a classic Hidden Mickey!

Walt Disney World Resorts

Hidden Mickey Riviera Resort

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa : While this is arguably not a Hidden Mickey, I love this one because it can be easy to miss for the resort’s beautiful atrium. Find silhouettes of Mickey Mouse and the gang on the floor just as you enter through the sliding door entrance!

Disney’s Polynesian Resort : Some of my favorite Hidden Mickeys in the resorts is in the lobby of Disney’s Polynesian Resort. Find 1 as you enter the lobby through the front doors – look down on the stone flooring that makes up this classic Hidden Mickey! Another classic one is up above you and is made up of 3 colorful orbs hanging from nets. Another one is on the coutertop where guests order their drinks at Kona Island Coffee Bar!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – Kidani Village : Just outside of Sanaa, guests can spot 2 Hidden Mickeys. One of them is made up of the circular art at the check-in desk for the restaurant. The other is closer to the double doors leading to the savanaa. It’s carved in the rockwork!

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort : Just after walking out the back doors of Destino Tower and toward Laguna Bar, look down at the ground by the flag pole to spot this Hidden Mickey made up of tiny holes!

Disney’s Riviera Resort: This Hidden Mickey can be tough to see if you’re not looking for it. As you’re walking to the resort from the Skyliner, look to the right of the building and you can spot this Hidden Mickey made up of 3 palm trees!

With the Disney parks and resorts continually changing and improving, it’s virtually impossible to say for sure how many Hidden Mickeys there are in Disney World. However one thing is for certain: you’re definitely not going to find all the Hidden Mickeys in Disney World in 1 day, let alone in a week!

The rarest Hidden Mickey is found in the queue for Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid. While this iconic Hidden Mickey is a shadow only to be seen on Mickey and Minnie’s birthday as the light shines on the rockwork at the perfect angle, you can actually see the outline of Mickey on the edge of the rockwork itself! About half way into the queue, make sure to turn around and look up at the edge of the rockwork to spot this Hidden Mickey!

So the story goes, the point of Hidden Mickeys was originally a way for Imagineers to infuse the spirit of Mickey Mouse into EPCOT in the 1970s and 1980s at a time when the combination of alcohol and Disney characters were believed to be improper.

For the purposes of this article, the rules of Hidden Mickeys we’ll go by include the definition provided by the Hidden Mickey Guy himself, Steven Barrett. The Hidden Mickey is “a partial or complete impression of Mickey Mouse placed by the Imagineers and artists to blend into the designs of Disney attractions, hotels, restaurants, and other areas.” As you explore, keep a tally of how many Hidden Mickeys you find!

Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the  Omsk Regional Archives  at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards  Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery.  For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see  Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia

Dostoevsky and the Tsar

At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A  museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk  is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage

The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of  his works .

Milhail Vrubel's painting 'Demon Seated in a Garden' (1890)

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams,  Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian   punk, jazz and the classics

While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a  musical theater  built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band,  Grazhdanskaya oborona  (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko  Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.
