M&A: British Luxury Yacht Manufacture SUNSEEKER to be acquired by US Lionheart Capital

The Chinese conglomerate, Wanda Group, in a bid to overcome debt, has reportedly agreed to sell the British yacht builder to the US investment firm in a multi-million dollar deal.

Wanda Group, the majority owner of Sunseeker International since 2013, has agreed to sell the Poole-based yacht builder to Miami-based investment firm Lionheart Capital, according to Bloomberg. The news agency stated that “according to people with knowledge of the matter”, Wanda Group and Lionheart had signed a sale-and-purchase agreement. The transaction could close as early as May 2024, depending on British regulatory approval.

Sunseeker has declined to comment on the situation. Last year, Sunseeker CEO Andrea Frabetti announced that the yacht builder had a retail forward order value of GDP 625 million, signalling a continued recovery following a downturn in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Led by founder and CEO Ophir Sternberg, Lionheart is a diversified investment firm focused on “value growth investments”. Lionheart has a wide-ranging portfolio including ventures into private and publicly traded companies, retail and commerce, residential and hospitality, having backed companies including restaurant chain BurgerFi International, reimbursement specialist MSP Recovery and technology company SMX (Security Matters). In 2021, the firm was part of a group that bought US powerboat maker  Cigarette Racing, which recently launched its Middle East operation .

In 2013, Wanda Group, China’s largest shopping centre operator, reportedly acquired nearly 92 percent of Sunseeker for GDP 320 million. According to Bloomberg “Wanda Chairman Wang Jianling said then that the investment was driven by growth in China’s consumption of high-end luxury products that was ‘exponential’.” However, the conglomerate has increasingly come under pressure after borrowing costs surged and Beijing continues to crack down on the property sector, Bloomberg reported.

In early December 2023, Wanda Group was divesting core businesses, including its commercial facility management and movie divisions, to avoid bankruptcy. In January of this year, the Group was selling assets such as the 193-room Shanghai Wanda Reign luxury hotel, situated in Shanghai’s famed Bund district for an undisclosed sum. According to reports, sources indicate that the transaction was valued between an estimated 1.44 billion and 1.66 billion yuan (USD 204 million and USD 234 million). As The Wire China reports, the “reign” of China’s former richest man Dalian Wanda could be coming to an end as Wanda Group enters a “selling spree” in a bid to overcome debt and a low cash flow.

Sunseeker Yachts Sold to Lionheart Capital, Owners of Cigarette Racing Team

Sunseeker Predator 74 XPS

A small but significant detail has emerged in the sale of Sunseeker Yachts.

Bloomberg first reported that renowned yacht builder Sunseeker , which is owned by the Chinese-based Dalian Wanda Group , was being sold to Miami, Florida-based investment firm Lionheart Capital .

According to Bloomberg , both parties have signed a so-called "sale and purchase agreement," although details of the sale are not yet public. The completion of the sale is also subject to regulatory approval from the British government. Sunseeker is based in Poole Harbour in Dorset, England.

What's of note is that Lionheart Capital purchased Cigarette Racing Team in May of 2021, marking a significant turn of events for one of boating's most iconic and revered brands. The purchase was led by Miami entrepreneur John H. Ruiz in partnership with Lionheart Capital. Cigarette Racing was founded in 1969 by the legendary Don Aronow .

Shortly after the acquisition in 2021, Cigarette made several notable announcements, including plans for a 130-foot superyacht and a line of electric PWC's . They also launched the well-received 52 Thunder under new CEO Alex Ruiz, son of John Ruiz.

At the time, the elder Ruiz told Robb Report that the new superyacht “...will have a European look, with fine, elegant lines. I think people will be ready for a Cigarette superyacht. They want style and performance in one yacht, and we can do that.”

Now it appears those plans are coming to fruition as Lionheart will add one of yachting's most prestigious brands to its growing portfolio. Sunseeker was founded in 1969 by brothers Robert and John Braithwaite and has since become a global leader in luxury yacht manufacturing. The company is currently led by CEO Andrea Frabetti.

Sunseeker yachts is perhaps best-known outside the boating world for the use of their boats in James Bond films including Casino Royale , Quantum of Solace , and Die Another Day .

The Dalian Wanda Group acquired a 92% stake in the brand in mid-2013 for an estimated ₤320 million, or roughly $493 million USD. Dalian rose to prominence as an issuer of high-quality junk bonds in commercial real estate, although the conglomerate came under pressure from the Chinese government after their borrowing costs surged.

With the acquisition by Lionheart, the firm will now add another boating brand to its growing US-based portfolio. Lionheart also owns several U.S restaurant chains , as well as hotels and multiple retail and commercial properties.

While there has been no announcement yet regarding any U.S. plans for Sunseeker and its vast inventory of models, one can rightly expect that to come to fruition in the near future.

Sunseeker has been one of yachting's most consistent brands in recent years, having launched 5 new models in 2021 alone, and has consistently maintained a full order book for commissioned builds. #news #products #cigaretteracing #sunseeker

New co-ownership platform exclusive to Sunseeker owners

We explore the differentiating factors and the long-term vision for the new meros co-ownership platform….

Image for article New co-ownership platform exclusive to Sunseeker owners

On 3 June, Sunseeker announced the launch of Meros, a co-ownership platform developed exclusively for Sunseeker clients. SuperyachtNews speaks with Martin Huber, managing director of Meros, about the details of the new platform, the sharing economy, misconceptions and his long-term targets for the superyacht market.

“I started boating in the 1980s with small sports boats and then in 2006 I bought a Fairline 68 and I learnt very quickly that the costs are not in a good relation to the time that you can use the boat,” starts Martin Huber, managing director at Meros. “So, I decided with my next boat in 2016 to enter into co-ownership to formulate my own opinions on the model. However, I learnt that co-ownership makes no sense for smaller owner-driven boats, it creates far too many problems. Furthermore, the vessel was only available for private use and not for charter, but I felt this was a big disadvantage when compared with the possibilities.”

As to why Sunseeker, Huber explains that the Sunseeker brand and business model is the ideal partner for a co-ownership business. With the capacity to produce large numbers of vessels in a variety of size ranges, as well as having a strong international brand, Huber believes that through Sunseeker the co-ownership model can grow rapidly.

“It will naturally depend on how successful the business will be, but we have prepared our business in such a way that one day we will be expecting five-to-10 boats every year,” comments Huber.

“We are usually some years behind the US market, leasing, for instance, was adopted much earlier in the US than it was over here. The same has happened with various sharing models, many things have come from the US. A study out of Delaware predicts that the sharing economy will from $25billion to over $300billion in the next size years. I believe that the acceptance of the sharing economy is growing, especially amongst the younger generations. Of course, there are still those who believe you have to possess something to use it, but the younger generations just want access, not ownership,” continues Huber.

Huber cites the car market as an analogous business, explaining that 20 years ago few numbered the individuals that leased their vehicles, whereas today leasing a car, whether privately or through a company, is extremely common. Huber also believes that co-ownership models can help alleviate capacity issues at some of the world’s most popular marinas, as well as reducing the raw materials that are required for the superyacht industry.

“There are various distributions channels for the new platform, one is certainly through Sunseeker’s organisation because they have strong market access. But, we are also working with certain brokers. Not necessarily brokers from the traditional brokerage houses, but young brokers with an international network that have a completely different approach to the market,” explains Huber.

The first vessel to be made available for co-ownership with Meros is Sunseeker’s Blue Infinity 86 Yacht. At 26m Blue Infinity is above the 25m threshold that Huber has set for the model. Unlike previous co-ownership models, which focus on fractional private ownership, Blue Infinity will also be able to charter during those weeks when none of the co-owning parties are able to use the vessel. Vessels will be managed through Meros, which will arrange the crewing, berthing, insurance and various administrative responsibilities associated with managing a superyacht.

“We’re excited to be involved in bringing this new concept of yacht ownership across the Mediterranean and to the market,” comments Chris Head, director of sales at Sunseeker London Group. “As well as joining the Meros Members Club, Meros co-owners will be a welcome addition to the Sunseeker family. This exclusive network includes invitations to our new model launches, International Boat Shows & VIP events and owner cruises. Through Meros, we’re offering Sunseeker yacht ownership at a quarter of the cost. Simple, honouring your time and our heritage, while always prioritising your experience.”

Among certain factions of the superyacht industry, co-ownership certainly still has its detractors. Whether it is because the details of the various business models operated by different businesses are not understood well enough or because some doubt whether or not multiple owners can own and operate a superyacht harmoniously, many of the arguments do not typically stand up to interrogation. Given the amount of discourse that is dedicated to attracting new owners to the superyacht market, it is shocking at times the extent to which certain individuals push against a legitimate model that may attract new clients with different perspectives.

"If you make it easy to exit, you make it easy to get them in," concludes Huber.

A NEW ERA OF SUPERYACHT : SUNSEEKER UNVEILS THE LATEST ON THE GROUNDBREAKING 120 YACHT

The Sunseeker 120 Yacht is a symphony of heritage, innovation and performance. With over 20 years of superyacht expertise, Sunseeker elevates its Superyacht range with the new 120 Yacht.

Set to deliver three cascading decks of luxurious entertainment, this new superyacht design will captivate with its elegant profile and luxurious interior design. Sunseeker's signature styling shines through, setting it apart from other superyachts in its class with a large aft cockpit, impressive flybridge and breathtaking main deck owners stateroom.

Bold geometric shapes form the exterior design, immaculate style and effortless functionalities converge to offer tailored ownership of the phenomenal 120 Yacht.

A fixed sun lounger with a parasol is integrated into the tender garage door, offering unique waterside relaxation on the rise-and-fall bathing platform. A six metre tender and two jet skis occupy the vacuous tender garage. Glazed safety gates open into what can only be described as a penthouse terrace. Guests are immediately met with a phenomenal outside space. Loose furniture provides a comfortable seating area serviced by a fixed wet bar. Stunning curved glazing separates the cockpit from the interior, offering an ultra-private space for socialising.

The flybridge offers a sensational retreat for owners and their guests. The aft deck is thoughtfully conceptualised with loose furniture from recommended suppliers, including three sun loungers, a large sofa and four comfortable lounging chairs. At the centre of this incredible entertainment space lies a dining table for twelve guests, serviced by a large wet bar and four bar stools. There is no shortage of space on board the revolutionary flybridge, with over 71 metres squared of living space.

Forward of the raised pilot house lies an elevated foredeck. A huge C-shaped seating group with twin tables complements the spa tub and a four-person sunpad. Thoughtful design ensures seamless movement and ample space for both guests and crew. Convenience is paramount, with strategic access points facilitating ease of service and navigation. The main deck galley, conveniently located on the port side, offers direct access to the flybridge for efficient servicing. Guests can ascend to the flybridge via the aft cockpit staircase, seamlessly transitioning into the living space. For uninterrupted access from stern to bow, a starboard side entrance from the raised pilot house ensures seamless connection from flybridge to forepeak. The exterior zones, seating arrangements and features provide an outdoor sanctuary.

The 120 Yacht offers interior features designed to elevate the on-board experience. This spacious yacht offers sleeping accommodation for ten guests in a four-guest cabin configuration, each with an en suite, below deck and a private owners stateroom on the main deck.

A sophisticated and rich interior has been realised with strategic design partners, Design Unlimited. The elective materials assist in maximising the natural light on board. The 120 Yacht introduces reflective surfaces to bounce the light around the space. Uninterrupted views from dining to lounging in the expansive open-plan main deck. Luxurious stone finishes, detailed centrepiece bulkheads and statement lighting pieces create an elegant space for owners to truly immerse themselves in sumptuous surroundings. Recessed lighting in shelving and ceiling coves envelope owners in rich comfort.

The main deck offers over 122 metres squared of interior volume and is subtly zoned with framing screens on the port and starboard side to offer a sense of separation between the formal dining and comfortable saloon without restricting the space on board. In-set marble flooring in the dining room complemented by matching geometric design in the ceiling defines this space, while the saloon benefits from more angular furniture selections. The generous galley on the port side provides all servicing requirements for the crew.

The main deck saloon is furnished with comfortable freestanding furniture. A large sofa to the port side, with integrated tabletop and shelving units, and beautiful feature coffee table provides a convenient space for lounging. On the opposing side, comfortable armchairs with a side table provide enough seating for large groups. Forward of the saloon is an exceptional dining space with an intimate round table design choice for up to ten guests.

Further forward on the starboard side lies the entrance to a phenomenal main deck owners suite. Re-engineered to improve accessibility, the owners stateroom benefits from a completely flush floor to the en suite which allows ease of movement between spaces. Furnished to an exceptionally high standard, this private oasis features loose furniture, stunning cabinetry with integrated mirror TV, marble bulkheads and floor-to-ceiling windows. A soft upholstered bed is complemented by feature bedside tables. Freestanding companion seating on the starboard side comprises a chaise longue with an armchair and small coffee table. The beautiful dressing room with a vanity desk, shelving and drawers, leads to the en suite with dual wash basins, finished with elegant brassware and a rich mix of marble, metallic finishes and rustic timber. A walk-in rain shower with a bench seat and dedicated water closet completes this stunning masterpiece. With scope for customisation, owners can truly create a space that reflects their personal style and preferences.

Sunseeker 88 Yacht

Simple and streamlined: Five reasons why owning a Sunseeker is hassle-free

Whilst you may be already well acquainted with the renowned British boat builder, Sunseeker, there's a hidden dimension to owning a Sunseeker that often goes beyond expectations. The flagship dealer for Sunseeker International, the Sunseeker London Group transcends the conventional role of merely selling yachts and stands as a beacon of support for the Sunseeker ownership community. BOAT explores five reasons why owning a Sunseeker is not just a simple, hassle-free process but an added layer of luxury and exclusivity to your superyacht ownership experience.

1. Support that goes beyond sales

At the heart of Sunseeker London Group's ethos is a dedication to customer satisfaction and an in-depth understanding of the luxury yachting market. The Group's primary focus on new yacht sales ensures that clients have access to Sunseeker's diverse selection of the latest models.

Beyond sales, Sunseeker London offers an array of services, creating a seamless and comprehensive support system for yacht owners. Whether it's selling pre-owned yachts through brokerage services, experiencing luxury through Sunseeker charters or receiving top-notch after-sales support, Sunseeker London is more than a dealership; it's a partner in the entire yacht ownership journey.

For those desiring an exclusive yachting experience without the commitment of ownership, Sunseeker charters offer a gateway to the superyacht lifestyle. The Group's commitment extends beyond the initial purchase, with comprehensive after-sales support covering maintenance, repairs, guardianage and servicing, ensuring every client's yacht maintains its peak performance and appearance.

2. 360-degree service

Sunseeker London's business model revolves around exclusivity and personalised service. This translates into a 360-degree support system, offering owners a convenient, all-in-one service with a trusted brand. The Group's expert team guides clients in finding the perfect yacht, be it a new acquisition or the sale of a pre-loved vessel.

At the heart of Sunseeker London’s philosophy lies a commitment to placing clients at the epicentre of their operations. Guided by a team of seasoned professionals, Sunseeker London brings a wealth of knowledge to the table, from technical specifications to design intricacies and the nuanced performance capabilities of Sunseeker yachts.

“My family and I have owned Sunseeker boats purchased from Davis Lewis and Christopher Head for over 20 years," says a Sunseeker owner. "We have enjoyed several different models over the years from  12 metres (40 feet) through to 35 metres (116 feet) berthed in a variety of Mediterranean locations. The fact that we keep coming back says it all. We have always received exceptional service in all areas and, as such, we have had a wonderful boating journey with infinite happy memories. An exceptional team of people who are the heart of the Sunseeker family."

3. A global network

Sunseeker London boasts a global network connecting clients, suppliers and industry partners seamlessly. While the Group's headquarters reside in London, it maintains an extensive presence across the UK, Europe and the North African coastline.

This widespread network ensures a robust support system, with dedicated Sunseeker engineering and service centres strategically placed in the UK, France and Mallorca. Additional service hubs in Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey, Portugal, Germany and the Adriatic guarantee that Sunseeker London can provide support wherever clients are in the world.

4. Become a part of the Sunseeker family

Sunseeker London extends beyond being a service provider; it's a community. Exclusive events throughout the year, from 'Best of British' dinners to owner cruises, private wine tastings and track days, offer clients the chance to come together and be part of the wider Sunseeker family. These events provide a unique opportunity to share experiences, create lasting connections and indulge in the luxury synonymous with the Sunseeker brand.

5. Explore the brand’s impressive portfolio of yachts

Sunseeker offers an impressive array of yachts for clients to choose from, and to kick off the year in grand style, it is poised to showcase a stellar lineup at the renowned boot Düsseldorf boat show on 20-28 January 2024. Among the highlights are two European debuts – the 27.1-metre Ocean 182 and the 23-metre Predator 75 , adding to an impressive display that includes the 28-metre 95 Yacht , 26.3-metre 88 Yacht , 23.6-metre 76 Yacht , 21.2-metre Manhattan 68 , 20.5-metre Predator 65 , 17.2-metre Manhattan 55 and the 17.1-metre Superhawk 55 .
