30 minute read

Start your yacht charter holiday in Croatia by booking a superyacht in Rijeka. Known as the cradle of Croatian tourism, Rijeka and the wider Kvarner bay region have loads to offer to yacht charterers looking for a bit of seaside adventure, before venturing further into the Croatian Adriatic.

A key port for maritime traffic, as well as a tourist hub, Rijeka has managed to preserve its rich cultural heritage, in the form of neo-classical buildings, monuments, medieval castles and baroque churches.

Its hilltop villages offer astounding panoramas of the bay below, while its Lungomare seaside promenade, stretching for 11 full kilometres, offers travellers unique opportunities to enjoy Austro-Hungarian architecture, blended perfectly with garden-style walkways and the vast blue Adriatic sea.

With a rich history and a preserved culture, Rijeka is a vibrant city, where something is always happening somewhere, from festivals and carnivals to cultural manifestations, classical music concerts, popular entertainment and more.

WHY CHARTER IN RIJEKA

Visit Rijeka, a one-of-a-kind city, filled with vibrant events, culture and tradition, beautiful beaches, pristine nature and colourful people. Walk the energetic main promenade of the city, known as the Korzo, where all the locals stroll in the afternoon, sipping coffee while they people-watch.

Peek into the small streets that spread from the old town core like roots, taking you on a time trip and leading you to cultural monuments and beautiful architecture that reminds onlookers of the rich historic value of Rijeka.

The wider area of Rijeka is also filled with incredible areas that beckon to be experienced, like hilltop villages, churches and forts. Farther still, you can climb high mountain peaks and marvel at the distant panorama and your yacht charter on the horizon. If you want to stick close to the shoreline, swim in the crystal-clear sea, dive near incredible shipwrecks or enjoy top-notch cuisine.

There are strong traces of Italian design that can be spotted by observing Rijeka`s architecture. Known as `Fiume` in Italian, Rijeka has long since been a key point of interest for Italian cultural and social influences. This is why some travellers spot similarities between Rijeka and, for example, Trieste.

There are many cultural manifestations and happenings to look forward to when going on a yacht charter in Rijeka, like the unavoidable Rijeka Carnival or one of many EDM festivals that take part all along Rijeka`s coastline.

WHEN TO CHARTER IN RIJEKA

Rijeka was first recognized as a centre for treating asthma, bronchitis and other similar ailments, which makes this city a terrific place to visit all year round, in regards to the traveller`s health. The fresh air mixes with sea salt and essential oils from Adriatic pines, creating an unbelievably beneficial mixture for all sorts of respiratory problems. Keep in mind that cruising in the summertime is entirely different from coming to Rijeka off-season.

Croatian climate is characterized by classic Mediterranean elements, like hot and dry summers and mild winters. The Croatian Adriatic sea measures about 25-30 degrees Celsius (77-86F) in the summertime, which is perfect for staying in the clean sea for hours on end.

Yacht Charter in Rijeka air temperature grephics

As the peak of the summer season passes, there are still sunny days that reward swimming, snorkelling or spending time in the water, without needing to worry about low temperatures. In autumn or winter, more experience with cruising or sailing is needed, seeing that a mighty Bora wind can blow at high speeds, sweeping everything in its path.

The area around Rijeka is known to possess a specific microclimate, where the high mountains in the rear attract rain clouds when the first signs of autumn come. By this time, only the most hardened of sailors and yachtsmen stay in this region, usually tending to move to the southern parts of the Croatian Adriatic.

General recommendations for yacht guests is to visit Rijeka in a broad gap between the months of April and October. Hitting the high season, from July to August means that you will encounter more yachts on the sea, as well as countless tourists on beaches and on Rijeka`s promenades. This should not worry you too much, seeing that a yacht charter is a perfect tool to avoid large crowds and focus on the content you want to experience without worrying about other people.

The peak of the summer season also brings with itself hot days and warm nights, with pleasant and low-speed winds, perfect for enjoying all the perks of the beautiful Croatian Adriatic sea. Another option would be to enjoy a yacht charter in Rijeka when it is less crowded, in the months of May, late September and the whole of October. During these times, the weather and the temperatures are more temperate, with virtually no people in sight, either on yachts or on the streets of Rijeka.

The wider Kvarner gulf area is characterized by pleasant temperatures and moderate winds, which produce mild weather forecasts with enjoyable sun, sea and air conditions. We recommend seizing all the benefits of the charter season and avoiding the summer crowds. How? Visit Rijeka at the start of the summer season, which means the last weeks of May and the first weeks of July, or at the end of the summer season, during the last weeks of September and the first week of October.

HOW TO GET TO RIJEKA

Rijeka, being a major traffic hub and an important port for maritime logistics, is fairly easy to reach. The city’s airport is located on the nearby Krk island , which is connected via bridge to the mainland, with a large number of flights connecting Rijeka to most European cities. While you transit from Krk to Rijeka, you can enjoy truly breathtaking views of the wider Kvarner bay area, the high Učka mountain and the mighty Velebit mountain chain .

For the sake of convenience, you can plan your yacht charter to pick you up on the island itself; anything can be arranged with the help of your expert SuperYachts Croatia broker and your yacht captain. The transfer between the airport and the Rijeka marina takes about 20-30 minutes. There are other international airports located near Rijeka, like Pula`s airport , which is 100 km away from the marina, the Zagreb one , taking 2 hours of transit to Rijeka or the one in Trieste, with nearly 2 hours of transit to Rijeka

Rijeka has an excellent public transportation system that drives regular tours from the city core to all the quaint and charming hilltop villages, medieval castles and perched churches that surround the wider area of Rijeka. You can also arrive by train – Rijeka has relied on train transportation that connected it with the mainland ever since the Austro-Hungarians built the first railways in the 19th century. Since then, the system was upgraded and modernized to be able to cater to modern and fast trains.

Discover Opatija – ‘The Old Dame of Adriatic’

Known as the cradle of Croatian tourism, Opatija is also one of the first European tourist destinations , with first guests arriving as early as the 19th century, when tourism as a term was not even coined. The earliest guests were the Austro-Hungarian royalty , who discovered Opatija as an easily accessible location with a mild climate and rich vegetation. Today, Rijeka and Opatija are also perfect locations for yacht travellers.

As the royalty built their villas, they set the standard for yachting in the area, which still attracts many yachtsmen to this day, with features like the Lugomare promenade. Rijeka`s Lungomare seaside promenade is an 11 kilometre stretch of stunning coastline that links the old historical core of Rijeka with its neighbouring seaside settlements. Here, nature is in heavy contrast; on one side, there is the high Učka mountain, and on the other, the blue Croatian Adriatic sea, in all its splendour and glory.

This combination of different natural influences, together with modern amenities and comfort, make Opatija an attractive destination for tourists all year long. Known for being populated by the upper-class. Opatija is located just 20 minutes from the centre of Rijeka, following the route of the western coastline. Explore the ` Nice of the Adriatic `, on your charter holiday, and cruise around the Opatija Riviera.

Discover a nobleman’s town where many historical influences left their mark, filled with imposing architecture and several key buildings and features, like Villa Angiolina , an estate with French gardens or the Lungomare, a seaside promenade from the late 19th century, with incredible blends of nature and architecture.

Opatija draws inspiration from many cultural Italian coastal cities, attracting important Croatian music events in large open-air summer stages near the sea, where globally famous classical and contemporary musicians perform. Also, Opatija hosts the yearly Miss Croatia and Miss Universe Croatia competitions.

Explore Bakar – A picturesque fishing village

Bakar is a quaint and charming seaside settlement, with a lot of history and a unique atmosphere of culture observable in this sleepy coastal town. A former fishing village, Bakar has seen great wealth being brought in by a booming fishing trade, particularly in tuna; today, this business is in steep decline because of lack of fish.

If you are passionate about fishing, you will be glad to discover the remnants of this glorious past, in the form of special fishing observatories – huge poles that stand at an angle above the water’s surface, enabling observers to spot the fish and call in the fishermen. Curious travellers can try and climb these poles if they are brave enough.

Stay active in lush nature during your yacht charter in Rijeka

The plains and the hinterlands of the Kvarner region hide many secrets in the form of beautiful scenery, small streams and creeks, green plains and magnificent rock formations, nestled between harmonic greenery and smooth grass. With the warm summer wind, even the highest of peaks in Croatia are hospitable enough for you to enjoy a perfect view.

Considered to be one of the best views in all of Croatia, climbing Učka’s peak means that you will be able to enjoy the Croatian Adriatic panorama in its most glorious form. Učka is a park of nature, located very close to Rijeka and is home to the highest peak in Croatia, reaching more than 1800 meters above sea level.

This gives the climbers of Učka a chance to enjoy the most beautiful view of the highest peak in Croatia. The Učka mountain is also home to countless trails and pathways that have educational posters and regular stops that supply food and beverages.

National Park Risnjak is also close by; translated from English, it literally means Lynx National park, but do not worry; there are no dangers for visitors. Instead, the name of the park communicates an untamed and wild side of this part of Croatia. Tread across numerous trails, made by the soles of outdoor enthusiasts and enjoy the mountainous terrain and panorama.

The highest peak is 1,528 meters tall Veliki Risnjak, crowning the heavily forested area of the beautiful National Park, a true haven for breathing in the clean outdoor fresh air of Croatia. There are many different types of trails, from beginner and intermediate to advanced , like the easy Leska trail. In the park, there are numerous signposts in different languages, communicating interesting and surprising facts about the flora and fauna of this fabulous park.

The park also houses the source of Kupa river, a spot where the purest and cleanest water emerges from the depths of the mountains, following its path downhill and creating a background for the Krka National Park.

Cruise along the surrounding islands on your yacht charter

The islands in the greater Kvarner gulf region and the ones closest to Rijeka are Krk island , Cres and Rab island, with nearby Pag and Lošinj islands. These all make perfect targets for incorporating into your yacht charter itinerary, because each of them offers something special.

Sightseeing Around Rijeka

When sightseeing in Rijeka, there are countless options for exploring and experiencing parts of Rijeka`s rich history.

Visit Trsat, a 13th-century castle built on a hill overlooking the town of Rijeka, constructed on the site of an ancient Roman fort. There are several paths to reach the castle, from walking through an established scenic route to taking public transport. Once you reach your destination, first take a detour to the nearby Church of our Lady of Trsat, where an icon of Mary is kept, painted by St. Luke himself.

Enjoy marvelous views, with the panorama stretching long over Rijeka and towards the sea and the Kvarner bay. Try to spot your yacht charter in Rijeka harbour with binoculars, courtesy of your yacht crew.

Take a stroll through the main promenade of the city known as Korzo. This street was originally part of Rijeka`s high walls that protected the city, but was later reimagined as the city`s main social vein.

There are many markets, outlets, malls and shops, together with many places to dine and drink coffee under the sun. Locals tend to spend time sitting at bars, watching travellers from many different backgrounds and different parts of the world come together in Rijeka.

Sit beside them and enjoy Rijeka`s atmosphere, a blend of vibrant cultural and energetic cosmopolitanism. Marvell at the neo-classical buildings right next to the City Tower, one of Rijeka`s main landmarks. This tower had survived the destructive earthquake of 1750, and its working clocktower was first put into use in the 17th century. The area around the clock tower was known as the Roman Gate, a former entrance to a now-disappeared Roman fort.

Explore Saint Vitus Cathedral, the main place for holy worship in Rijeka , also known as the Rijeka Cathedral or `Katedrala Svetog Vida` in Croatian. Built in the Baroque period, its one-of-a-kind floor plan supports a structure that took nearly a century to finish, starting in 1638 and finishing in 1744.

Outside Rijeka and only 10 minutes by car, travellers can discover the hidden small town of Kastav, ¸which dates to the middle ages. There are remains of fortificational architecture from the 16th century, when noble families used to populate this area.

Connecting the old core to the numerous hilltop villages, Rijeka`s famous stairway consists of 538 steps that connect the Church of Our Lady in Trsat with the Korzo promenade. The lower half was built by a captain Peter in the 16th century, while the remainder was added later.

The stairway leads the climbers through the Rjecina Gorge, a combination of steep cliffs and wonderful tunnel vision panoramas of Rijeka below, surrounded by lush vegetation and vertical drops. Although a moderate climb, the stairway is entirely safe and is used daily by pedestrians for transit between Rijeka and Trsat.

There are many museums in Rijeka, but the two most famous classical museums are the Maritime and Historic museum , housed in the governor’s Palace, a wonderful Neo-renaissance structure and the Natural Museum.

The latter one is located in a 19th-century villa, containing an endless collection of nearly 100, 000 objects from the surrounding area of Rijeka. These include fossils from cave systems, minerals, precious gems, rock formations and a palaeontology collection.

A unique organisation in Croatia, Rijeka`s astronomy centre is the only facility to combine the functions of an observatory and a planetarium. Considering Croatia has one of the clearest skies in Europe, with no light pollution at all, it is no wonder that skygazers find Rijeka`s astronomy centre a one-of-a-kind opportunity to study the stars and the planets with absolute clarity.

Located on a hill outside of town, the centre is easy to reach and has thus far discovered 2 stars. The centre was constructed in 2001 on a site of a former World War II military complex, repurposing much of its previous infrastructure.

Moscenice is a charming coastal village, located about 15 miles southwest of Rijeka. Because it was built on a hilltop, Moscenice is a must-see destination for travellers because it offers unbelievable views of the Kvarner Gulf. Because of a wide panorama, there will be no problem at all for you to spot your yacht charter, either anchored in the distance or berthed in Rijeka`s harbour.

Yacht charter in Rijeka

Moscenice offers more than a view: its narrow and high alleyway lead to many small piazzas, similar to Italian medieval towns. Among more interesting architecture, it is worthy to mention 3 churches, built between the 16th and 17th centuries.

One of Rijeka’s many brags is that it was the city in which the torpedo was invented. The story goes that Giovanni Lupis, a retired naval officer, and Robert Whitehead, an engineer, were trying to think up ways of protecting Rijeka`s coastline, without the need for heavy ships.

In collaboration, the idea-man and the engineer came up with the „Coastal Saviour“, a world-first torpedo prototype. Fast forward to the 20th century, and Rijeka`s „Torpedo armaments factory“ was producing several thousand torpedos per year, but bankruptcy shut the whole operation down with the beginning of the 21st century.

The nearest gas station for yachts is located in Opatija, 5 nautical miles away from the heart of Rijeka. While your yacht fills up on gas, you have a chance to experience the incredible gardens and villas of the late Austro-Hungarian Empire, as well as take a walk on the beautiful Lungo Mare seaside promenade.

Enjoy an exquisite fine dining experience on your yacht charter in rijeka.

The wider Kvarner bay region, and particularly the city of Rijeka, offer incredible opportunities to satisfy your gastronomic cravings and desires with an infinite selection of mouth-watering dishes.

Being famous for the quality and the variety of seafood on offer, Rijeka is recognized as a major stop for all food lovers, especially the ones in love with the Mediterranean style of cooking. The whole Kvarner region is famous for its squid and scampi, which are best savoured in a black squid risotto or a scampi ‘buzara’, a terrific blend of broth and sauce. Meat lovers will be delighted to try the lamb, a local speciality, which is usually prepared on a spit or with an iron bell under hot coals.

Besides seaside dishes, Rijeka also offers many specialities hailing from continental Croatia, which are an interesting blend of many different cultural and gastronomic influences that all met during Croatia’s long and turbulent past. This creates an interesting mix of seaside dishes and inland specialities.

Winning many prestigious awards for years in a row, the world-famous olive oils from the region of Istria and Krk island are the best possible dressing for Adriatic-styled seafood dishes. When talking about cuisine tied to the Istrian peninsula and the Kvarner region, an unavoidable mention is Istrian truffles, a true delicacy praised by gastronomers from all over the world. Also worthy of mention is the `Krčka kneginja` or the Duchess of Krk, a famous dessert dish, hailing from Krk island.

The Croatian Adriatic is also a famous wine-growing region, and this fact also comes to light in the wider Rijeka area, which offers many globally-established brands of Istrian wine, but also local sortes like the Vrbik Žlahtina, hailing exclusively from Kvarner.

Rijeka`s gastronomy has seen many different cultures influence her, which produces diverse cuisine, hailing from Italian, Austrian and French kitchens. These influences can be recognized in dishes like prosciutto-stuffed cuttlefish or Tuna Tartare, seasoned with capers, lemon peels, cherry tomatoes and seaweed.

If you are not keen on exploring the gastronomy of Rijeka, you can always let your expert yacht chef do that for you, by provisioning in the biggest fish market in Croatia, the central market of Rijeka. All of the major restaurants get their raw seafood from here, so be sure that you will be tasting the same quality, but made with a Michelin twist by your experienced chef.

The fish market in Rijeka was built in 1916 in an art-nouveau style, which gives it a nice flair when shopping for that perfect piece of seafood for dinner. There are also two smaller pavilions that host meat and dairy products; all the food sourced in Rijeka`s market comes from local manufacturers that grow organic and farm-to-table produce.

Rijeka undergoes efforts in promoting her colourful gastronomic tradition in manifestations like the Chestnut Festival or the Chocolate festival, events that provide many different dishes made from chestnut or chocolate; also popular are the Asparagus Festival and the Sardine Festival.

When it comes to fine dining restaurants, there are several in the greater Kvarner region worthy of exploring. These include establishments such as Boškinac, a first-class restaurant on the island of Pag, which prepares local produce and raw ingredients, like fish, local cheeses and lamb in a cosmopolitan manner.

Also worthy of mentioning is Bevanda restaurant in Opatija, formerly run by a local celebrity chef, Andrej Barbieri who recently passed away . Famed for using freshly caught seafood in combination with excellent wines, Bevanda is not to be missed for travellers in search of a fine dining experience.

Johnson restaurant, located in Moscenica, keeps it simple, using only natural and organic ingredients and locally grown produce, while Draga di Lovrana restaurant, located in Lovranska draga, offers an incredible setting, together with fresh seafood.

Yacht Charter in Rijeka cruise map for yacht charters superyachts croatia

Day 1: Rijeka – Cres Island

Cruise with your yacht charter from the starting position in Rijeka to the island of Cres , which hides many secrets and plenty of possibilities for fun and excitement for the first day of your yacht charter vacation in Croatia. Let your yacht crew anchor around Cres so you could witness the incredible Vrana freshwater lake in the island`s interior.

One of the few of its kind in the world, the freshwater lake provides incredible opportunities for swimming or taking pictures. You could also visit Lubenice beach and experience the incredible diversity of wildlife on Cres, observing more than a thousand different plant species. With amazing flora and fauna, but also archaeological remains and cultural monuments, Cres is sure to be the start of a fantastic yacht charter vacation in Croatia.

Day 2: Cres – Unije island – Lošinj island

A short cruise away are your three targets for the second day of your yacht holiday. Unije is a small island, with less than 100 people living here ( outside of the summer season ). There are no roads or public transport of any kind on Unije, which makes this island a coveted location for those wanting to escape the noise and crowds of more typical tourist destinations. The best option for totally exploring Unije without any difficulties would be using a yacht charter.

The second target of the day is Lošinj , an island that is a personification for biodiversity. Thanks to lush greenery and rich vegetation, Lošinj island supports an incredible array of animal life , both on land and under the sea. For instance, the Lošinj Garden of Fine Scents offers visitors a chance to better understand the many different aromatic and natural herbs on the island. There are also several dolphin-spotting locations around the island, as well as a Sea Turtle Rescue Centre.

As for culture, Lošinj harbours the Apoxyomenos Museum , dedicated to an archaeological find of a bronze Greek statue from the 2nd century BC, of which a replica can be observed in the Lošinj Historical underwater park, an incredible diving experience. Ask your yacht crew to arrange an incredible underwater adventure, with your yacht charter close by.

Yacht charter in Rijeka

Day 3: Mali Lošinj – Permuda, Silba, Olib

Permuda island`s main selling point is the underwater cave system known as the ‘Cathedral’ , named for resembling the grandiose place of worship, thanks to tall and intricate rock formations. Also in the vicinity is the wreckage of the SMS Szent Istvan, a battleship of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. This makes Permuda twice as interesting for divers and snorkelers and a perfect stop on a 7-day yacht charter itinerary that began with a yacht charter in Rijeka.

Silba island is the same as Unije, that is, there are no cars on the island . Because the whole island is reserved for pedestrians, there is peace and quiet to be found around every corner and on every beach. Yachts anchoring around Silba can expect entirely private coves and bays for enjoying peace and exclusivity only possible on chosen locations in the Croatian Adriatic sea.

Silba also offers incredible diving opportunities, where you can dive and observe underwater sarcophagi, but also learn a lot about this wonderful patch of land. For instance, Silba was known as the `island of captains` who bought it for 100 000 gold coins. There is also an interesting love story tied to the local landmark, the Toretta tower; ask your local charter crew about it and they will gladly tell you the whole tale.

Finally, you can rest underneath olive trees in the Leggiero restaurant where you can watch experienced chefs as they show-cook on open grills.

Olib is your third target for the day; it is a place with a history that dates back to Romans, who settled on this island around the 3rd century BC. There are many archaeological sites scattered around the island, perfect for an afternoon stroll after eating lunch on your yacht charter. Also to discover on Olib are masses of fantastic private and sandy beaches, perfect for children to play in the shallows. Anchor your yacht nearby and enjoy a day filled with having fun on water toys around Olib island.

Yacht charter in Rijeka

Day 4: Olib- Pag ( Novalja )

From Olib, it is only a short trip to reach Pag island, famous for many things. It is known as ‘Moon island’ because the majority of the island is barren rock; this happens because of strong Bora winds that start to blow at the end of the summer season. When it comes to exports, Locals prize the traditional lace motif of Pag above all others in the world – the Pag lace is also protected by UNESCO .

There is also the unavoidable natural and organic sheep cheese or `Paški sir`, which goes great with traditional ways of preparing Pag lamb. But, besides historic heritage and gastronomic delicacies, Pag island is also known as the number one Croatian Adriatic party destination. With its reputation rising steadily over the years, Pag has come to be known as the place to be if you want to experience incredible open-air electronic dance music festivals, with parties lasting throughout the entire summer season.

Yacht charter in Rijeka

Day 5: Novalja – Rab

Rab is an island famous for its quantity of sandy beaches, as well as being rich with history and beauties of nature. The sandy shores of Rab island are excellent for enjoying swimming, snorkelling or a variety of watersports, best launched from the beach club of your yacht charter.

In the interior, vast forests cover the majority of the island, giving praise to the name `Green island`, translated as Arba in old Illyrian. The forests are filled with hiking and biking trails, ideal for an active charter holiday. In the summertime, you can catch the famous Rapska Fjera, a festival known for celebrating Rab`s history and culture.

Yacht charter in Rijeka

Day 6: Rab – Krk

Experience the biggest island in Croatia, famous for its fine olive oil, excellent wines and hospitable locals. Stroll between the mighty walls of old town Krk and experience the interior of the island, filled equally with lush green vegetation and barren plains and hinterlands.

Swim in the crystal clear waters of Punat bay and visit a charming monastery on a small island, but not before climbing the highest peak of the island and trying to spot your yacht charter on the horizon. Krk is also known for its many secluded beaches, many of which are only accessible by yachts and boats, so prepare to enjoy Krk`s golden shores in privacy, peace and utter comfort.

Yacht charter in Rijeka

Day 7: Krk-Rijeka

On your way back to Rijeka, you can ask your yacht captain to stop at interesting locations along the way, so you could enjoy the last day of your yacht charter holiday in Croatia. Stop and take a swim in a bay of your choice or enjoy your Michelin-level lunch nestled in the quietness of a secluded cove. If you would not like the charter experience to end, it is always possible to extend your yacht vacation by asking your local SuperYachts Croatia broker about the availability of yachts on offer.

There are 3 main marinas that ought to be in the centre of attention for every vacation that revolves around a yacht charter in Rijeka and its surrounding regions. The marina in Opatija serves several purposes. Firstly, as a petrol station for yachts and other vessels intended for venturing on expeditions in the west and south Croatian Adriatic.

Second, the historic heritage of Opatija makes this place an exclusive and luxury marina, mainly due to Austro-Hungarian architecture, royalty-built villas, gardens and seaside promenade. Lastly, because of its pedigree, ACI Marina Opatija is near some of the best restaurants in all of the region of Kvarner, making it truly a fine dining paradise.

Marina Punat on the island of Krk is the oldest marina in the Croatian Adriatic sea, with many extra amenities available for yacht charter guests, like a wellness centre, restaurants and Blue Flag beaches. The marina is open all year round and can take up to 850 berths and 500 more on dry docks, but yachts must not exceed 40 meters in length i.e. a 4,5-meter draft.

Your starting position, ACI Marina Rijeka has all the necessary features that a modern and busy marina should have, like lots of dry and wet berths, a 24/7 marina service, wellness and spa facilities, restaurants and an online Yacht shop. There is plenty of extra content in form of Rijeka itself, where the city provides the entertainment for charter guests spending an evening in the ACI Marina Rijeka.

Rijeka

Rijeka | A City Layered in Time

Rijeka’s story stretches back to Roman times, evident in the remnants of walls and amphitheaters. Through the centuries, it has been ruled by Hungarians, Habsburgs, Italians, and Yugoslavs. Each group left their mark on the city’s architectural tapestry.

Trsat Castle: Perched atop a hill, this medieval fortress offers panoramic views. During the summer the castle courtyard transforms into an open-air theatre. Attend captivating performances, from classical plays to modern concerts, under the starlit sky.

Korzo : Stroll down this lively pedestrian street, lined with colorful buildings, trendy cafes, and charming shops. It is a microcosm of Rijeka’s modern energy.

Capuchin Church: Marvel at the ornate baroque interior and climb the 538 steps to the bell tower. Your reward is breathtaking cityscapes.

Beyond the Streets

Beyond the historical facades, Rijeka pulsates with contemporary life. Art galleries showcase local talent, museums delve into the city’s rich past, and theaters stage captivating performances.

Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art : Immerse yourself in Croatian and international art, from paintings and sculptures to interactive installations.

Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc : Savor a night of drama, opera, or ballet in this stunning neoclassical theater.

Trsat Nature Park: Escape the city and follow winding trails through lush forests, listen to the murmur of waterfalls, and discover grottoes teeming with life. Breathe in the fresh air, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy nature’s tranquility.

A Culinary Treasure Trove

Rijeka’s cuisine is a delicious blend of Croatian and Italian influences. Fresh seafood, succulent pasta dishes, and hearty stews are just a taste of what awaits.

Dine at Conca d’Oro. The menu includes a choice of local seafood dishes, pasta, and pizza. Informal and welcoming, it lies on a narrow side street off the Korzo.

Konoba Kantina: This cozy restaurant serves up traditional Croatian fare with a modern twist, in a charming setting.

Buffet Voltaire: Sample an array of international tapas and enjoy live music in this trendy spot.

Trattoria Al Milion: Savor authentic Italian pasta and pizzas in this traditional trattoria.

More Than Meets the Eye

Rijeka’s charm extends beyond its historic center. Explore the vibrant port area, with its bustling markets and quirky cafes. Take a ferry to the scenic island of Krk for a day trip. Or, venture to the nearby Risnjak National Park for a dose of breathtaking nature.

Shop at the City Market, close to the port. Three pavilions, built in the late 1800s, display local produce – seasonal fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, and meats.

Explore the Rijeka Tunnel, a pedestrian tunnel running under the city center. It was built from 1939 to 1942 by the Italian military to protect civilians from Allied aerial bombings during World War II.

Risnjak National Park: Hike through dense forests, spot wildlife, and breathe in the fresh mountain air in this stunning national park.

Rijeka beckons with its unique blend of history, culture, and contemporary energy. It’s a city that surprises and delights, a hidden gem waiting for you to discover.

At The Yacht Engine we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. The Yacht Engine is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboat across Europe to a sailing boat, motor boat, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Rijeka

Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Rijeka below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on The Yacht Engine with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in Rijeka it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.

When searching a geographical area on The Yacht Engine you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailing Yacht (Sailboat): From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a skipper who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Skippered Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat hire or yacht charter in Rijeka you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht hire or skippered yacht charter.

When using The Yacht Engine you can filter all boat searches to be with or without skipper depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat hire.

Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the skipper, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases skippers will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Rijeka

If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Rijeka. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Rijeka, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Yacht Charter Rijeka

Rijeka is the main commercial sea port and third largest city in Croatia. It lies at the head of the Kvarner Bay, on the eastern side of the Istrian peninsula; due North of Krk and Cres islands. It is a deep-water port and a major shipbuilding and maritime transport centre. A pleasing city with many points of interest and charming Hapsburg-era architecture, there are also a number of festivals held here in the summer if you are after a cultural fix.

The mainland coast is magnificent, rising from sea level to mountains in a relatively short distance. It is a good place to rent a motorboat, sailboat or gullet. From Rijeka, cruising the Kvarner islands of Krk, Cres, Losinj and the smaller islands and islets is possible. These pretty islands with their crystalline waters, attractive bays for shelter and short distances between them are ideal for sailing. Well-organised with great nautical infrastructure and bountiful natural beauty, Kvarner bay is a fine sailing destination. Along the coast is the busy resort of Opatija, above which is the Ucka Nature Park. In Opatija you can find well-equipped marinas, great dining and a little glamour.

Connections

Rijeka is well connected by bus with the rest of Croatia , Italy and Slovenia. Rijeka International Airport is on Krk Island just 30 km away. Domestic and international train lines run from Zagreb, Trieste, Ljubljana, Vienna, Munich and Salzburg. Rijeka is also connected by catamaran to the islands of Cres, Lošinj, Pag, Rab, Unije, Susak, Ilovik. The nearest vehicle and passenger ferry is on the island of Krk which is connected to the mainland close to Rijeka. These ferries travel to Cres Island and Rab Island.

Sailing conditions

Kvarner Bay offers exciting sailing. Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5. During early spring and autumn conditions can be more unsettled. The coastal islands along the coast tend to be more mountainous and navigating between them can be exhilarating in gusty conditions. Both mainland and islands in Kvarner Bay area are well supplied with sheltered ports and marinas for when conditions become too difficult.

Rijeka is a major city in the Dalmatian region, spread out on the coast of the Kvarner Bay in the Adriatic. Rijeka has been known since the 13th century, the city was built on the site where the ancient city of Tarsatica had previously stood. As a result of military disputes with Venice in the 16th century, most of the buildings in the city were destroyed. At the end of the 16th century, Rijeka was given the status of autonomy. In the aftermath of World War I, Rijeka became the subject of controversy between the Yugoslavs and Italians. Rijeka more than once passed into the hands of Italians, then Hungarians, then Yugoslavs, and only in 1991 the city finally became part of the state of Croatia.

How To Spend Your Day in Rijeka, Croatia

Cruise to Dubrovnik, Croatia with Norwegian

Located on Kvarner Bay, Rijeka is one of Croatia's most fascinating cities. Visitors may notice multi-cultural influences and various languages spoken here, thanks to a turbulent history that saw the city change rulers multiple times. Rijeka was named the 2020 European Capital of Culture, beating out other Croatian candidates such as Split and Dubrovnik. Rijeka is known for its over-the-top Carnival celebrations, but the port city also offers impressive sights, delicious cuisine, and beautiful landscapes. If you're planning a Croatia cruise vacation that stops in Rijeka, here's how to spend your day in port.

Ready to start planning? Explore all 2023 cruises to Croatia.

Visit Trsat Castle

Get a workout by climbing the 538 stairs that lead to Trsat Castle, which dates back to the 13th century. The castle was restored in the 19th century after suffering damage in a 1750 earthquake. While it was once in possession of many royal families, today it serves as a museum. Its bastions feature impressive views of the city and the Adriatic sea.

2023 Mediterranean Cruises with Norwegian - Dubrovnik, Croatia

Take a Boat Ride to the Golden Island of Krk

Rijeka is often called the gateway to Croatia's islands. With more than 1200 islands, only a tiny number have inhabitants. Consider a day trip to the nearby island of Krk, which has earned the nickname "Golden Island" because of its fertile soil and abundant sunny days. If you want to enjoy local wine and sample delicious dishes, Krk will not disappoint.

Visit the Pearl of the Adriatic

Head 30 minutes west of Rijeka, and you'll arrive in Opatija. This beautiful seaside village is sometimes called the Pearl of the Adriatic because so many rich and famous people vacation here. Walk along the promenade, and you can't help but notice fancy seaside restaurants and extravagant hotels. Villa Angiolina was once a luxurious palace that now serves as a museum. Despite its reputation as a vacation haven for the rich and famous, Opatija is not pretentious.

Dine at the City Market

The City Market is the place to get a feel for life in Rijeka and the local cuisine. Locals have recommended the market as the best place to dine since the 19th century. It's located near the shore, where fishers once unloaded their catch to sell at the market. Today, the primary market is housed in three pavilions. Outside, visitors will find stalls fully stocked with flowers, vegetables, and fruits. Stop by the food stalls nearby to try a quick and inexpensive lunch.

Norwegian 2023 Mediterranean Cruises - Hvar, Croatia

Explore Slovenia's Postojna Cave

Booking a Mediterranean cruise on Norwegian allows you to explore many fascinating historical and natural wonders. From Rijeka, you can take a day trip to the Postojna Cave, one of the most visited caves in Europe. A railway takes you through the impressive interior for a truly unique experience. Built over 140 years ago, this is the only karst cave with a railway.

During your tour, you'll hear the history of the cave and learn more about its iconic 16-meter-high stalagmite called the Skyscraper. Postojna Cave is also home to the world's oldest underground post office and underground animals called olms. Olms are sometimes referred to as baby dragons or human fish.

Near the cave, you'll find Predjama Castle. It's the most extensive cave castle in the world and has mysterious tunnels that link it with the cave system below. The cave has been in the middle of this 123-meter-high cliff for more than 800 years. The cave under the castle is four floors deep and is home to a large colony of bats.

Relax at the Beach

You'll find several beaches nearby if you're looking for a place to relax for the day. One of our favorites is Sablicevo Beach, which is about a 15-minute walk from the town center. You will need to climb down some stairs to get to the beach, but it's worth the trek. Another popular beach is the larger Fiumana Beach or Plaza Ploce, located north of the city center. Right behind the beach is Bazeni Kantrida, a large indoor swimming pool.

Take a Day Trip to Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Croatia's most visited attractions. The park is renowned for its chain of 16 turquoise lakes in a limestone canyon. The cascading lakes are separated by travertine, or tufa, barriers, forming different level terraces.

Visit the Smallest Town in the World

Recognized by the Guinness World Book of Records, Hum is the smallest town in the world, with a population of around 30 people. It's located in the center of the Istria region, making it an easy excursion from Rijeka. While tiny, Hum is a very scenic town with numerous scenic photo spots. It even has an entrance gate, walls, and a castle.

Legend has it that giants built Croatia. When they finished heaving giant stones to make their homes, the giants placed the leftover ones on the ridge above. This ridge eventually developed into Hum.

Hum is situated along Glagolitic Avenue, a scenic road that connects with Roc. Unique statues pay homage to the Glagolitic alphabet, recognized as the first Slavic alphabet.

If you enjoy trying local spirits, don't miss out on the Humska Biska, a local homebrewed rajika or brandy. This popular spirit consists of mistletoe and several other secret ingredients.

Rijeka Cruise Port View from Trsat Castle, Croatia

Rijeka Cruise Port Guide: Trsat Castle & City Centre

Rijeka Cruise Port , though a lesser known port, offers just as much history, culture and natural beauty as nearby famous Croatian cities, Split & Dubrovnik. In this guide, I’ll show you how to walk from Rijeka Cruise Port to the city centre and how to easily reach the medieval Trsat Castle and surrounding Franciscan Monastery by bus. Of course, you can also choose to hike up via the “Stairway to Heaven” (aka Petar Kružić staircase ), like I did. There are also famous Cathedrals, the Rijeka Tunnels and city markets to enjoy. I hope you’re ready for a jam-packed port day at Rijeka Cruise Port!

Wondering how easy it is to do a DIY shore excursion in Rijeka Cruise Port ? It’s absolutely 😎😎😎😎😎 easy peasy and here’s why:

  • Walk to City Centre: From Rijeka Cruise Port, you can walk to Rijeka City Centre in about 5 minutes. Most attractions, other than Trsat Castle, is within walking distance of the city centre.
  • Bus to Trsat Castle: You can hike up to Trsat Castle but you can also take the bus, which drops you off about 5 minutes’ walk away. No need to climb 500+ steps, unless you want to!
  • Good bus network to nearby towns: If you’d like to venture further afield, Rijeka has a good bus network (for a relatively small town). In fact, my cruise ship tendered into nearby Opatija (Belle of the Croatian Riviera) and I caught the bus into Rijeka.

Rijeka Top Attractions: What to See in One Day

Trsat Castle Rijeka, Croatia

Perched atop a hill overlooking Rijeka,  Trsat Castle (Gradina Trsat in Croatian) is a medieval fortress that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the Kvarner Bay , and the surrounding mountains. The current Trsat Castle was constructed in the 13th century by the Frankopan family, one of the noble families at the time. However, the site itself has been inhabited since prehistoric times!

Trsat Castle has served as a strategic lookout point for the Romans and later under Habsburg rule, when Rijeka was under the threat of Ottoman incursions in the 16th century.

The Castle is free to visit and you’re allowed to roam around the castle yourself. You can even climb the Watchtower! There’s a cafe in the central courtyard and there’s a WC near the cafe. This is a very kids-friendly attraction.

How to Get to Trsat Castle from Rijeka Cruise Port or Rijeka City Centre

From Rijeka Cruise Port, walk 5 minutes towards the City Centre.

  • Journey Time : Bus journey takes about 20 minutes
  • Get Off at the last stop. From there, it’s 5 minutes walk on flat ground to Trsat Castle but note that there are steps at Trsat Castle.
  • Tickets : One-way tickets are €2. Buy directly from driver with cash. If you walk past a Tisak newstand kiosk, you can also buy a ticket there.
  • Timetables: Google Maps shows the scheduled bus times. It worked really well for me. Click here to jump to Google Maps , then scroll down and click on “see departure board” button. Once you’re physically at the bus stop, there’s live departure times on display.
  • Walk: You can hike up via the Petar Kružić Stairway which consists of 561 steps – see section and photos below.
  • My Experience : Don’t do what I did! I did the silly thing of hiking up in 33C (92F) humid heat! I was exhausted and sweaty after the hike, so I caught the bus back down. If you’d like to see the Petar Kružić staircase (see below), then the easier journey is to catch a bus up and then walk down. There are some good views on the way up but I’d say that the best views is definitely at the castle and surrounding areas, so no FOMO if you’d like to skip the walk altogether and use the bus up and down.

2. Petar Kružić Stairway

Petar Kružić Stairway Starting Point, Rijeka, Croatia

The Petar Kružić Stairway, aka Trsat Stairway, is considered a significant historical landmark in Rijeka, Croatia. It’s a steep stone staircase that winds its way up from the city centre to Trsat Hill , where Trsat Castle and the Church of Our Lady of Trsat (aka Church of Mother of God of Trsat ) are located.

The stairway dates back to the 16th century and is named after Petar Kružić, a Croatian military leader known for his battles against the Ottoman Empire. The stairway was originally intended to provide a path for pilgrims journeying to the Church of Our Lady of Trsat, a place of pilgrimage due to a venerated icon of the Virgin Mary.

Finding Petar Kružić Stairway Starting Point

I’ve marked the start of the Petar Kružić Stairway on my Rijeka DIY Excursion Map above, approximately 10 minutes walk from Rijeka Cruise Port. There’s no obvious signage pointing to the starting point, so use Google Maps to navigate. The starting point looks like the photo above.

If you’d like to hike up to Trsat Castle, I’d recommend making it the first attraction on your DIY itinerary, as it can get too hot to climb it under the midday sun. There’s some shady spots for a break but most of the hike has no shade.

Note: It’s 561 steps to the top! I’d say that the stairway is in good condition.

Church of Our Lady Trsat on top of Trsat Hill, Rijeka Croatia

The Church of Our Lady of Trsat (Crkva Gospe Trsatske in Croatian), nestled atop Trsat Hill in Rijeka, is considered one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in Croatia.

The church’s origins are linked to a 13th century legend. According to this legend, angels miraculously transported the Holy House of Nazareth (the childhood home of the Virgin Mary) from Nazareth to Trsat. After a few years, it was supposedly moved again, this time to Loreto, Italy.  This legend has made Trsat a key point on the pilgrimage triangle of Nazareth-Trsat-Loreto.  As such, the church is very popular with locals.

The most revered treasure within the church is a miraculous icon of Our Lady of Trsat, believed to have been painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. This church has been visited by Pope John Paul II and you can see a big statute of him outside the church.

The church is free to enter. Even if you’re not interested in churches, there’s a park outside the church with quite a few benches, so this is a good place for a break. Also, there’s a free and clean WC – something I’ve found very rare in my travels through Croatia. WC is well sign-posted.

Rijeka City Clock Tower along Konzo Street near Rijeka Cruise Port in Rijeka Croatia

The City Clock Tower, ( Gradski Toranj in Croatian), is the landmark to aim for Rijeka City Centre, if you’re walking from Rijeka Cruise Port, or has just returned by bus from Trsat Castle. The City Clock Tower is on Korzo – the main pedestrian only street. There’s loads of shops, cafes and takeaway shops on Korzo.

The Clock Tower dates back to Roman times when it served as a gate to the ancient settlement of Tarsatica . This gate marked the entrance to the city from the sea, and everything between the tower and the modern waterfront is reclaimed land. In the Middle Ages, the gate was transformed into a fortified tower, part of the city walls that protected Rijeka. The Tower was re-built after the devastating earthquake of 1750.

Walk under the City Clock Tower and you’ll easily find the Cathedral of St. Vitus .

Cathedral of St Vitus facade, near Rijeka Cruise Port in Rijeka Croatia

The Cathedral of St. Vitus (Katedrala Svetog Vida in Croatian) has a round rotunda design and the circular layout is supposedly inspired by the famous Santa Maria della Salute church in Venice.

Built in the 17th century, the cathedral is in Baroque style. The cathedral stands on the site of an older, smaller church dedicated to St. Vitus, the patron saint of Rijeka . The Cathedral is free to enter.

The Rijeka Tunnels , also known as TunelRi , are a network of underground passages. The most well-known tunnel, stretches 350 metres (~380 yards) from St. Vitus Cathedral to the Dolac Primary School. It was constructed during WWII as an air raid shelter for civilians. The entrance to Rijeka Tunnel will be on your left, if you face the Cathedral of St. Vitus.

  • Opening Hours : Daily 10am – 6pm. The tunnel is free to enter.

Both Trsat Castle and the Rijeka Tunnels are kids friendly activities – see above for details. In addition, I would also recommend the unusual Peek & Poke Computer Museum .

Old typewriters on display in Peek & Poke Computer Museum in Rijeka Croatia

Peek & Poke Computer Museum boasts an impressive collection of over 2,000 items, showcasing computers, calculators, gaming consoles and other technological artefacts from the 1960s to the 1990s. There’s everything from early mainframes to iconic personal computers like the Commodore 64 and the Apple II.

Before you say, “oh my kids won’t like ancient history”, there’s loads of hands-on interactive exhibits at Peek & Poke. Kids can learn about how computers evolved to what they are today, while big kids can relive their childhood gaming experiences.

  • Tickets: €7
  • Opening Hours : 10am – 6pm Monday to Friday, 11am to 4pm Saturday & closed Sundays from May to mid-Oct. For winter hours, double-check on website .

Rijeka: What to Do When It Rains

In addition to Peek & Poke Computer Museum, there’s two more museums in Rijeka which will keep you entertained during a rainy day.

The Maritime and History Museum at Rijeka is housed in the 19th century Governor’s Palace. The interior of the Governor’s Palace is just as interesting as the museum’s collection!

The maritime collection showcases Croatia’s rich seafaring traditions and you’ll see ship models, navigational instruments, nautical charts and exhibits on shipbuilding, fishing and naval history.

  • Opening Hours: 9am to 8pm Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm Monday, 9am to 1pm Sunday. Double check opening hours here .
  • Tickets: €4 adults, €2 kids, €8 for families. Kids under 7 are free.

The Natural History Museum in Rijeka has a focus on marine life and geology. The highlight of the museum is the multimedia aquarium, with a variety of Adriatic fish, sharks and rays. It’s nestled in the tranquil Nikola Host Park, so take a stroll there too if it stops raining!

  • Opening Hours : 9am to 8pm Monday to Sunday
  • Tickets: €3 adults, €1.50 kids

Opatija is the crown jewel of the Croatian Riviera and is about a 20-25 minute bus ride away from Rijeka. I would say that Opatija has much more of a resort feel to it and if you fancy strolling down its famous Lungomare promenade, then a DIY half-day excursion from Rijeka to Opatija is straightforward. (My cruise called on Opatija and I travelled to Rijeka on a DIY half day excursion myself!). Check out my Opatija Croatia Guide: What to See & Do in Croatian Riveria. If you’re interested, here’s how to plan out your logistics:

Bus #32 from Rijeka will take you directly to the heart of Opatija in 20-25 minutes.

  • Note: The #32 stop is NOT at “ Palazzo Modello 1 ” marked as per Google Maps. The “Palazzo Modello 1” stop marked on Google Maps is in fact the urban bus services stop – ie. buses operating within Rijeka. The bus to Opatija is classified as a suburban service and leaves from further down the street where I marked. Look for a bus stop sign that says “ Županijske (Prigrad) Linije ” which means County (Suburban) Lines! See photo below 👇

the best way rijeka yacht

  • Tickets: Cash fare from the bus driver is €3 each way (3 bus zones). But if you walk past a “Tisak” newsstand, you can buy a return to Opatija for €4.60 or a 24-hour pass for €5.44 (Zone 1-4). The 24-hour pass will cover the return trip to Opatija, as well as the bus trip to Trsat Castle.
  • Timetables: See #32 bus timetable here .
  • Where to Get Off: #32 bus goes all the way to Lovran, south of Opatija. Get off at Tržnica bus stop – it’s marked on my Opatija DIY Excursion Map . It’s hard to miss the stop though, because the bus drives through the town centre and most of the passengers will be getting off at Opatija. Once you get off the bus, you can easily find your way to the Lungomare.

General Note about Bus Stops in Croatia: Out of all the European countries I’ve travelled to, Croatian bus stops are the hardest for tourists! 🤣 Most stops don’t have the bus routes labelled, so it’s very hard to know whether I’m at the right bus stop or not, even if I know which bus route I want to catch! Even if the stop is at a big bus station, the departure boards don’t show which departure bay the bus stops at. This “non-labelling” is very consistent across all the Croatian cities except perhaps Zagreb. So if in doubt, ask a local like I did. And if you happen to know why Croatians don’t label their bus stops, please let me know! 😁

I hope this guide has helped you planned your DIY shore excursion ashore at Rijeka Cruise Port! I wrote this blog post about Rijeka after a reader asked me about the port, so if you’ve got any questions, please feel free to drop me a line!

Visit Croatia

Make the most of the Croatian islands – the easiest itinerary for you

There are many things Croatia has to offer to travellers, and the islands in Croatia are absolutely one of them! Officially, there are 1,244 islands in the country (source: the Croatian government – they should know) of which only 78 are actually islands, the rest being islets and even smaller pieces of land. Now, I don’t expect you to visit all 78 of those islands – but many travellers do want to visit as many as possible to make the most of their time in Croatia. So here I present you with a guide to the Croatian islands – the easiest itinerary for you.

The wonderful thing about experiencing a number of islands on one trip to Croatia is that you will really get a feel for the differences between the islands, from beautiful nature in national parks to buzzing towns with nightlife options to tranquillity.

Ferries, catamarans and boats in Croatia

Firstly, a word on how to travel to the islands. Well, they’re in the Adriatic Sea so it’s no surprise to hear that you’ll be getting to them with some form of sea-faring vessel! (There are airports of varying sizes on some of the islands – such as Krk, Losinj and Brac – but there are no island-to-island flights. And, anyway, sailing is much more fun!

If you have the means to charter a boat or yacht to explore the islands then lucky you! You’ll be able to explore the islands to your heart’s content and will likely even get to know some of the smaller islands too.

For us regular folk, we will need to make use of the ferries and catamarans that operate almost all along the Croatian coast. Don’t worry, I’ll help and explain exactly which ones to take, when and where from/to!

  • More info: Take a look at the Visit Croatia guide to Ferries in Croatia for details of ferry companies, timetables and info on how to book tickets
  • Do also: take a look at our Croatia Ferries Map for visual guides (well, maps) of routes that exist along the Croatian coast. Not to be too boastful, but I think you’ll find in invaluable. I certainly did when writing this post!

A word about this Croatian island itinerary

As I’ve said many times on this website and in travel advice via email, there aren’t so many island-to-island ferry and catamaran services. These used to be a Jadrolinija long-distance ferry service from Rijeka to Dubrovnik that stopped off at some of the islands (for example, at Stari Grad on the island of Hvar) but this ceased service quite a few years ago. As such, a number of different ferry and catamaran services will need to be involved. There will also need to be some hops back to the mainland to make use of larger ports such as Split, and some other forms of travel (bus) here and there!

Of course, the beauty of this itinerary is you can very easily skip any parts of this that you don’t like.

Start: Step 1 – The Brijuni Islands

The Brijuni Islands off the coast of Istria are one of Croatia’s eight national parks and are awash with nature, history, and wildlife (some in the safari park and some actually wild). They’re an excellent place for a day trip if you’re visiting southern Istria, but are also a very relaxing place to stay – there are a handful of islands of the largest of the archipelago, Veliki Brijun.

the best way rijeka yacht

  • More info: Read our full guide to the Brijuni Islands to find out what you can see and do there.
  • Getting there: There are regular boat services from the small town of Fazana, just 10km from Pula . Tickets for the boat also act as entrance tickets to the National Park. See our Getting to the Brijuni Islands page for all the details.
  • Accommodation: You absolutely can’t beat the Hotel Neptun , mere steps from where the boats dock on Veliki Brijun, and with a wonderful position right by the water.

Step 2 – Losinj, Cres or Rab and Pag

Whether you’re staying on the Brijuni islands overnight or are merely visiting as a day trip, you’ll need to head back to Pula from Fazana for the next step in this Croatian islands itinerary. If this were a “choose your own adventure” book (remember those from the 1980s?!), I’d now be telling you to turn to different pages depending on where you think this adventure needs to go. So which will you choose? Slightly more remote and lesser-visited Cres ? Lush, green Losinj ? Or pretty Rab and party-hearty Novalja on the island of Pag ?

Step 2 Option A – Losinj

If I can guide you somewhat, the Losinj option may be the easiest one of all for step 2 – that’s because there are direct catamaran services from Pula to Losinj which make the journey a breeze. Once you get to gorgeously forested Losinj, you’ll be treated to an island full of nature and wellness. It’s absolutely the kind of place to come to for some rest and relaxation, as well as excellent dining options.

  • More info: All the info is on our guide to Losinj
  • Getting there: You’ll need to make use of the Kapetan Luka catamaran service which sails from Pula to Mali Losinj in 2 hours and 20 minutes. It’s a year-round service but less frequent in the off-season months. Additionally, it makes stops on the islands of Unije and Susak along the way should you wish to get even more of an island fill.
  • Accommodation: Spoil yourself with a night or two at either the Hotel Bellevue or the Boutique Hotel Alhambra , both of which are five-star. They are also both nestled amongst pine trees and offer excellent spa facilities. The latter is also home to a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Step 2 Option B – Cres

Despite being the second largest Adriatic island, Cres is very much overlooked by visitors so it is certainly the place to go to get away from the crowds.

  • More info: What to do on Cres
  • Getting there: From Pula, you’ll first need to head to Rijeka – best done by one of the frequent daily buses that take around 2 hours. Then from Rijeka, take the Jadrolinija catamaran to Cres which takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.
  • Accommodation: There are few hotel choices on Cres, but Hotel Kimen is a charming hotel in a lovely nature setting, close to a beach.

Step 2 Option C – Rab and Pag

The islands of Rab and Pag are included as an option together as there’s a catamaran that hops to both! Rab is another pine-forest-covered island with a very favourable climate and a number of sandy beaches – perfect for those who are looking for that ideal. Pag, on the other hand, has a totally different landscape, rather unusual and somewhat barren at times. But it’s Nvoalja you’ll reach which is famous for the nearby Zrce Beach…otherwise known as nightlife central!

  • Getting there: Once again, you’ll first need to travel on from Pula to Rijeka first (see the travel advice for option B above). From here, it’s another Jadrolinija catamaran that sails to Rab Town (journey time – 1 hour and 45 minutes) and then on to Novalja (journey time from Rijeka – 2 hours 40 minutes) daily, year-round
  • Accommodation for Rab : The Arbiana Heritage Hotel is a smart, design-focused hotel, located in a great location right in the centre of Rab Town on the seafront. They have a pool and onsite restaurant too. If you’d prefer a larger hotel with more facilities, opt for the Imperial Valamar Collection Hotel which is a short walk from Rab Town.
  • Accommodation for Pag: The Boutique Hotel Boskinac is slightly out of Novalja but is situated in a simply gorgeous location – amongst pine trees and next to a vineyard and olive groves. The hotel itself is housed in an old stone house and has an outdoor pool, plus a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Step 3 – Zadar…and on to Ugljan and back

Yup, it’s at this stage that you’ll need to head back to the mainland to then travel on to some of the Dalmatian islands. But whilst back on the mainland, why not take a slight detour and spend some time on one of the islands just off the coast of charming Zadar ? To make travel a little easier for you, I would suggest staying in Zadar itself – you will need to travel on, further south, from this town anyway rather than from an island.

  • More info: Ugljan , the island that’s practically “opposite” Zadar, would be a super easy choice.
  • Getting there: there are regular 25-minute ferries from Zadar to Preko on Ugljan
  • Accommodation: the super funky Boutique Hostel Forum has a location that can’t be beaten

Step 4 – A small interlude via Split

There are no two ways about it – to get to the famous Dalmatian islands , you’ll need to travel via Split . But from here there are plenty of ferry and catamaran options to some of the most popular islands in Croatia, so it’s worth it!

But perhaps at this point, take a little breather in Split and explore a bit of mainland city life. I mean, Split has so many sights, amenities, restaurants, cafes, bars, museums, experiences and more – there’s no way you will be bored.

  • More info: Our comprehensive guide to Split , or take a look at Two Days in Split for how to make the most of your time
  • Getting there: You will need to take a bus from Zadar to Split. Luckily, there are multiple buses every day, year-round. Journey time is 3 hours. Consult the Zadar Bus Station website for timetable and price information.

Step 5 – Brac

Lovely, lively and sport Brac is a popular island, not least because of the famous Zlatni Rat Beac very close to the town of Bol , which is on the south side of the island. And that’s where I would recommend you head to. Whether you want to merely head to this famous of famous beaches, explore a winery, indulge in the town’s local eateries or head out onto the sea for some sporty activities, you will find absolutely plenty to do here.

Top Sights in Croatia - Zlatni Rat Beach

  • More info: Have a good read of our guide to Bol
  • Getting there: There either Jadrolinija catamaran option 1 or Jadrolinija catamaran option 2 , or a Kapetan Luka catamaran . Journey time is 50 minutes.
  • Accommodation : The Villa Giardino Heritage Boutique Hotel is a gorgeous option right in the centre of Bol.

Step 6 – Hvar

Hvar, oh beautiful Hvar. Make that wonderfully sunny, beautiful fragrant and exceptionally stylish Hvar. Hvar Town is certainly a popular island destination in Croatia, from us ordinary travellers to celebrities such as Beyonce and Prince Harry. (Yes, really. But they weren’t holidaying together, I hasten to add.) Head to Hvar Town and walk up to the fortress above the town for truly spectacular views out over the Adriatic and the nearby Pakleni Islands . (To up your island count even further, why not get a daytime taxi boat over to one of them such as Sveti Klement?) And then put on your best beach wear to lounge by a pool on the beach, and your best gladrags for evening dining.

  • More info: Find out all there is to know on the Visit Croatia guide to Hvar
  • Getting there: Jadrolinija’s coastal catamaran is your best bet here. It’s another 50 minute journey from Bol to Hvar Town.
  • Accommodation : I love the Riva Marina Hvar Hotel , positioned right by the harbour.

Step 7 – Korcula

From one gorgeous island town to another, if you’re doing this island itinerary and ending up in Dubrovnik, you will find Korcula Town is almost like a preview of that famous Old Town. With fascinating and beautifully preserved streets, you will really get a feel for days gone by when you come to visit Korcula. It is also the supposed birthplace of famous explorer Marco Polo, and there’s plenty of opportunity to learn more about him here.

  • More info : Our extensive Guide to Korcula Town
  • Getting there: Jadrolinija’s coastal catamaran continues to help when making the hop from Hvar Town to Korcula, but there are also two routes with TP Line , or Kapetan Luka’s coastal catamaran as well.
  • Accommodation : San Teodoro would be an excellent choice

Step 8 – Mljet

We started this island itinerary, dear friends, with a national park, so let’s take in another near the end of this journey! Part of lush, tranquil Mljet is another of Croatia’s national parks but larger and with more amenities and facilities that the Brijuni Islands that we mentioned at the start of this itinerary. Come here for some chill time – perhaps it’s just the thing you need after more vibrant Bol, Hvar Town and Korcula Town. Spend some time exploring the island by bike and

  • More info : Visit Croatia’s guide to Mljet
  • Getting there: Use Kapetan Luka’s coastal catamaran option 1 or option 2 to get from Korcula Town to Pomena on Mljet
  • Accommodation : Hotels are scarce on Mljet, so consider a private apartment such as the Apartments Lorena Mljet
