New Spec Boat – 12m to 15m Power Catamaran

SeaCat Ships is proud to announce the commencement of our new 12-15metre Power Catamaran Spec Boat. The vessel is based on the Calypso X1 design, which has proven to be a great Coastal Dive Boat. This high-speed aluminium catamaran has showed excellent performance, time after time.

12m power catamaran

The original 13metre Power Cat was powered by twin mercury 350 H.P.  four stroke outboard engines, giving a top speed of over 27 knots and a fully loaded speed of 25 knots with 28 divers. The aft’ deck has a fold down platform which can be used for both beach landing and as a snorkelling/dive platform at sea. The dive platform is attached to a fixed platform which extends out past the outboards, which is complemented by three freshwater shower units.

Beside the platform is an aft’ full sized toilet compartment, which is a nice change from the cramped set ups you usually see in similar vessels this size. The foredeck is passenger friendly, with access through a water tight door.

12m power catamaran

This spec’ boat can accommodate quad 250 H.P. Outboards for a top speed of 36 Knots. The design can also accommodate inboard diesel engines and has been stretched out to 15.6 metres with twin Volvo 330 IPS drives. The results have been impressive, with no reduction in speed and excellent manoeuvrability.

This vessel offers speed, comfort, fuel economy and operational options such as day cruise, dive boat, evening cruise, party boat, ferry, etc. The complete design and kit file has been supplied and the build time is a very short 12 weeks. For more information contact Paul at ozemail.com.au.

Please see below the three different versions of the vessel available for construction!

Length: 12m

Construction: Advanced Composite

Draft: 0.67m Canoe Body

Power: 2 x 370hp

Fuel: 1200L

#1513 Biit Charley Tender

This 12m catamaran was designed specifically for use as the primary tender for an 84m superyacht.

The vessel was built using carbon fibre and foam sandwich composites, chiefly intended to reduce the lifting weight for storage on the back of LOMOcean designed shadow boat Charley (see 46m Shadow boat under pleasure section).

Given a relatively high passenger load, keeping the construction lightweight was also important from a powering and performance perspective.

Finished to pleasure yacht standards, the styling echoes that of the larger shadow boat and superyacht.

The catamaran is able to ferry up to thirteen passengers and crew, but is also set up to function as a diving and fishing platform. Underfloor storage space provides room for dive tanks and equipment, while a live bait tank and removable game chair offer fishing capability.

A novel feature on such a small vessel is the commercial sonar intended to offer high resolution imaging to assist with wreck searches and survey.

PA20832 scaled

Powering is courtesy of a pair of Yanmar 8LV diesels turning counter rotating propellers on Yanmar stern legs for a sprint speed of 30 knots.

Biit shares her demi-hull design with a number of small, fast LOMOcean designed catamaran – and their outstanding ride qualities.

During rough weather sea trials, the hugely experienced project manager for the construction of Charley declared Biit the softest riding small catamaran he had ever driven.

Montebello 12.5M Power Catamaran

A star is born in the form of the Montebello 12.5M

A new player in the ever expanding world of multihulls, Montebello Yachts opened its Gold Coast yard last year. But it didn't leave its new power and sailing catamaran designs to chance. Instead, it went straight to the source, across the Tasman no less, to the design offices of Roger Hill. Surely you have heard of him?

As the company blurb says, Hill has been drawing boats for just over 32 years. He began his working life as an architectural draughtsman before joining the offices of esteemed Bruce Farr in Auckland. Next, he moved to Farr's Annapolis base in the USA. After three years there, he jumped ship to work for another esteemed designer, Rob Humphreys, in the UK. Then he returned to NZ to settle down with the family.

This latter move led to an interesting variety of projects, including designing monohulls and catamarans, power and sail boats, craft fashioned from steel, alloy, wood, and composites. But he has made the biggest impression with his catamarans — Hill has something of a following on the Queensland coast — a fact not lost on Montebello Yachts, which engaged the Kiwi to draw its new range of boats.

The design brief was for a range of contemporary power catamarans that was fuel efficient, stable, fast, light but strong, and user-friendly. The boats needed to be multifunctional, too — able to be setup for serious fishing, family fun, cruising in comfort and style, and being things to all people in the case they are put in charter.

As luck would have it, Hill knew of some pre-existing moulds for a boat that fitted Montebello's brief to a tee. After a complete revamp of the decks and some expert craftsmanship, Montebello's new 12.5M Power Catamaran hit the water. Kai Lana (as it was named), the harbinger for a future range of power and sail cats from 11.5 to 14.4m, attracted strong interest at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Five boats (two sail, three power) were sold, we're told. Now the new yard is running flat chat when others are twiddling thumbs.

Big enough to cruise the coast, but small enough for a couple or individual to berth, the 12.5M is, as Goldie Locks might say, just right. What's more, its 4.44m beam means the cat can be slotted into the usual 12 x 5m marina berth or 9 x 5m private pen. No longer are you confined to the outer arm and a long walk to the shower block or bistro.   FIRST IMPRESSIONS I have set foot on many, many power catamarans over the years, spending long days at sea atop the old Broadbill aluminium cats, drifting over the ocean while listening to the incessant drum of water slapping the tunnel; I have cruised on multi-million-dollar five-star cats like the Innovation off the Gold Coast on days when monohulls remained tied to the marina; and I have taken the wheel of all kinds of cats in between these extremes.

I didn't have any preconceived ideas about the Montebello 12.5M, but within the space of a few short runs I was drawn to this boat. For starters, she runs in fine fettle, in perfect trim, her bows slicing the water only when they need to, while tracking high and dry on her aft sections most of the time. As a tribute to the design, the boat hasn't got trim tabs, as it simply doesn't need them.

Next, I was taken by the modern cabin lines, the fair mouldings with nigh a ripple and, on closer inspection, what I consider an excellent production-boat finish. Everything from the in-house stainless steel deck fittings to the silicon wipers and the interior trim (joinery finish could be improved) was a cut above many more established marques. Incidentally, Montebello's staff include a production manager ex-Sunseeker, shipwrights ex-Riviera and CEO, Gary Zamparutti, a qualified skipper and engineer with a lifetime of boating experience.

Then there was the user-friendly side of the brief. Although the 12.5M came from a Kiwi-drawing board, she has terrific local appeal, ticking plenty of boxes on my checklist as I moved from the transom to bow. You get a deep swim platform, built-in amenities centre with barbecue, big cockpit, foredeck lounging area and seating, extended flying bridge with tender and crane, and an indoor/outdoor saloon that increases the boat's living area. The layout is probably best described as a collaborative effort, with the best of both Antipodeans' worlds.   ENGINEERING FIRST Full marks to Hill for his full-planing hull and Montebello for the construction. The entire hull is handlaid and vacuum-bagged with 25mm Divinycell foam coring below the waterline and 20mm above it. The deck and flybridge are also infused, leading to a light displacement boat tipping the scales to just 10,500kg dry, 11,000kg in running mode, and 11,200kg cruise ready.

With the base 315hp Yanmar 6LPA-STP diesel engines with ZF electronic shifts and 2.86:1 vee drives, the lightweight Montebello 12.5M is good for 25kts. With optional twin 480hp Yanmar engines, as per the next boat, she is expected to hit 33kts. Several 12.5Ms will be coupled with Volvo Penta's IPS 400s, which Montebello says should hit 35kts, and it wouldn't surprise to see all 12.5M bundled with IPS or Zeus pod drives in future.

On the demonstrator, two big cockpit floor hatches lift to reveal terrific servicing room around the six-cylinder 4.163lt donks that, thanks to the vee-drives, are mounted well aft, thereby leaving more space for other things. The primary fuel filters, oil dipsticks and header tanks are all easy to access. And as you look down at the engines you can spot leaks at a glance.

I noticed labelled seacocks, twin pumps for the optional 32,000 BTUS of tropical strength air-conditioning, a 7.5kW Westerbeke generator with gas/water separator to reduce noise, and 3000W inverter for generator-free operation of the AV system and refrigeration. The watermaker was an option to sate the desire of the owners for long hot showers while cruising, although the 600lt water capacity is impressive.

The demo boat was also in 2C survey, hence the remote fuel and engineroom-vent shutoffs, the extra step in the ladder to the flying bridge, and the steel bucket. But seriously, Montebello intends to put this 12.5M and a similar length sailing cat in charter fleets in the Whitsundays. The boats would be ideal for it. Big enough to live aboard, but not too big to command.   DECKED OUT As touched on, I like the big swim platform and hot/cold transom shower. Twin gates lead to the especially big cockpit with room to fish or stage an alfresco lunch — fold-up table supplied in the sidepockets — under the flybridge overhang that provides valuable shade. Add insect curtains for tropical waters.

The mid-transom amenities centre, within arm's reach, has a pop-up stainless steel oven-type barbecue, cutting board and sink. The underside of its lid was the only flow-coated area of fibreglass I recall seeing. Injection moulds are used in other areas for a fairer finish. The transom gas locker carries two 4kg bottles for the barbie and gas galley stove preferred by the owner, but electric cooktops are an option.

A couple of small steps lead to the sidedecks which, in survey mode, are especially safe thanks to an extended bowrail with intermediate wire, handy grabrails, and non-skid deck. With the 2.9m Swift tender and 9.9hp four-stroke outboard carried on the bridge overhang, dispatched with a 200kg Davco davit, the foredeck is clutter-free and doubles as a sunpad, with room for two couples.

Pulpit seats built into the bowrail are perfect for toasting the sunset or whale and dolphin watching. Anchoring gear is heavy-duty, with a Muir windlass, survey-standard 55m of 10mm short-link chain, and spare anchor. Fresh and saltwater washes are provided. Back in the cockpit, there are low-voltage LED lights. The boat had searchlights and docking lights, too.

Although this was the standard open flybridge model, with a hardtop and three-sided Strataglass clear curtains for weather protection, a 12.5M headed for Perth will have three-sided safety-glass panels. Either way, the helm seat is a centrally located and sturdy number made locally, surrounded by a wraparound lounge for six to eight guests, subject to waterways regulations.

The console was of sufficient size to harbour two multifunction Simrad 8in NX40 screens with GPS, long-range radar and sounder. There was also an autopilot with remote, Fusion stereo, VHF radio, and spread of analogue engine gauges and fuel gauge. The Simrad screens are linked to a cockpit docking camera. Since the helm is forward there is no natural view of the transom. But the sight lines were commanding as we headed out into the fray and crossed the Gold Coast Seaway bar and breakers.   INDOOR LIVING Meantime, light mock-timber Amtico beech flooring, PNG rosewood trim and dinette, big picture windows and broad bi-fold opening saloon doors ensure plenty of light and fresh air in the saloon. In fact, the indoor seating area flows unfettered to the transom, thereby increasing the amount of living space. And with the aft galley up, you can easily feed a crowd. Eat indoors, around the dinette and lounge big enough for four people, or back in the cockpit with twice that number in a more casual setting.

Galley amenities include the aforesaid four-burner gas cooktop with wok burner and pot holders, big circular sink, 120lt 12V fridge and 90lt vertical freezer. Serious entertaining types will doubtless add a portable aftermarket icebox under the flybridge ladder.

Storage space isn't exactly abundant in the galley, either, but where there's a will there's a way. The control panel opposite has the usual 12/240V breakers, generator start, and gauges for the water and 150lt blackwater tanks. Air-con outlets keep things cool in summer, and there's a drop-down TV/CD/DVD that saves on space.

SLEEPING SIX Accommodation is down to port and starboard from the saloon. You can have three cabins and one head, as per the demonstrator, or two cabins each with an en suite. As it was, the three-cabin version is well suited to charter and family operation. The stateroom in the starboard hull features a queen bed forward and huge bathroom with Tecma head and big shower aft. There was a vee-berth in the forward portside hull and a double in the aft cabin, together letting you sleep six for at least short stays.

Headroom is a highpoint, opening portlights and escape hatches provide natural ventilation when the air-con isn't on, and there is adequate storage built into the cabins, however, hanging space existed only in the stateroom. That said, this is more your slippery coastal and inshore cruiser, with crew bedecked in summer attire, than a big-city entertainer for the blue blazer set.   SEA TRIALS It was a function of a wet winter that the Gold Coast was awash for days prior to our sea trial. The normally limpid Broadwater was a miry channel. So we headed for the Seaway in search of something cleaner. Although the tide was running in, the water was still pouring out to sea on the surface, creating some cascades that, we reasoned, shouldn't trouble the 12.5M.

No stranger to such conditions, Zamparutti nosed the boat over the two-metre tight-packed and feathering two-metre swells, causing some freefalls whose impact was cushioned by bent legs in the flying bridge. Clear of the break, and side-on to the swells, the boat ran well.

Advance the aftermarket electronic ZF shifts on the twin 315hp Yanmars, and the Montebello is cunningly slippery, edging horizontally to planing speed, with no discernible transition. Above all, it's strangely dry for a cat, a sure-fire sign of efficiency if nothing else.

While 25kts is the top speed at 3600rpm, you can cruise at a comfortable 19.5kts at 3200rpm, using just 58lt in total for a useful range of 425nm. In other words, you can do Sydney to the Gold Coast on a tank and moreover, port hop around the country without being strapped to the bowser. Along the way, the engines, boat and crew are hardly working or stressed.

Fuel efficiency, space and utility endear this boat to the cruising set. In fact, tough times and high fuel prices are steering more business towards the builders of cruising cats. And with more than a lick of style and room to park in a standard berth, city folk should find reason to get aboard the Montebello 12.5M Power Catamaran.

WHAT WE LIKED • Slippery Roger Hill hull travels in perfect trim, and is nice and dry • Economical cruising at 19.5kts and just 58lt/h • First-rate composite lay-up, fit and finish • Big cockpit, decks and indoor/outdoor living areas • Generous accommodation   NOT SO MUCH • Could do with more storage in galley, cabins and more refrigeration • Can't see transom from forward-helm station, necessitating docking camera • New badge on the block with no past production-boat history

  • Description

The ALPHA 12m power catamaran has been designed to be easily constructed out of marine grade aluminium with no compound curves or complex shapes. The bottom configuration of the hulls incorporates our latest thinking on power cat design. This features a large centreline lifting strake which is slightly rockered at the after end to bring the craft quickly up on to a plane. The sponsons are symmetrical in shape and have deep vee forward sections blending into medium vee after planing sections with large upper and lower spray chines. The overall beam of the craft has been kept down to decrease weight as much as possible and to allow the vessel to be moored in a marina. The easily driven hulls make this craft ideal for outboard propulsion. Twin 225 h.p. outboards give a useable 26 knots or 31 m.p.h. Higher speeds can be obtained with larger outboards or smaller motors can be used. This hull is also ideally suited to diesel inboard/outboard such as the 200 h.p. duoprops which will give a useable 26 knots or with surface drives the same engines with gear boxes a 30 knot top speed. The cabin styling has been designed to be easily constructed from sheet material with 5 plate windscreens giving a multi-facet screen across the front of the cabin, sliding glass side windows in the saloon and plenty of rake on the whole cabin front to minimise wind resistance. The hulls are constructed of marine grade aluminium plate with 5mm bottoms, 4mm sides, 5mm bridgedeck and 3mm cabin structure. The interior layout consists of 2 separate double cabins forward with their own ensuites, shower and toilets, a large saloon with a further fold out bed settee, roomy galley and L shaped settee dinette.

The plan includes FULLSIZE TEMPLATES of the frames, plus detailed drawings on hull construction, cabin, interior layout and written instructions.

The Spirited 400 'Power' is a semi-displacement power cat with sleek lines and light weight structure. For those who like 'turn-key' cruising this highly efficient design is always in readiness for a quick getaway. The slim hulls run easily through the water and provide a very comfortable ride even in rough conditions. This design can accommodate most luxury appointments for an apartment-like finish and experience.

Cockpit The acess into the cockpit is via the aft hull steps with the bottom step being extra long and in effect acting as a duckboard ideal for entering/exiting the water when swimming, diving or unloading the tender. The cockpit is open plan with a wide curved seat aft and additional seating either side. The open plans layout offers the option of a clear area or space to set up a table and chairs when required.

Bridgedeck Internally this design has the galley to Starboard against the aft bulkhead; opposite this is a generous sized seating area. The bridgedeck cabin is high volume and accommodates a dedicated steering console area with comfortable seat and dashboard design. This space works cohesively between all areas and provides a hub for the living areas while underway or at rest.

Cabins Entering the hulls there are three private double cabins, the two forward are queen sized and have the option of an ensuite or a walk-in-robe leading forward. All areas are spacious enough for comfortable use with all berths allowing for generous sitting headroom. Head and shower amenities are situated aft in the Port hull with a dedicated engine bay behind the separate shower; the Starboard engine is located below the aft double berth.

Power The engine size is flexible due to the semi-displacement hull design which is efficient at any speed range. The recommended engine size begins at 50hp through to a maximum of 125hp in a shaft-drive installation.

On Deck The surfaces are flat and level for safe clutter-free footing from the cockpit moving forward to the foredeck. The foredeck flows seamlessly onto the trampolines and also level with the forebeam. Access to the flybridge is from the cockpit on the Starboard side. The flybridge is the perfect outdoor social setting with excellent 'birds-eye' vision of the horizon. An optional second top steering station can be fitted for full control whist enjoying this area and is also advantageous when docking from this position.

Performance Expected speeds depend on engine size but cruise speeds will be effortless in the mid teens even with the smaller engines. Top speeds are in the high twenties with the large engines and in the high teens with the smaller sized engines. Given the fine entry hull design this design will cut through the water and offer a comfortable level ride in most conditions.

12m power catamaran

Sold as Catalac 12M or Catalac 41

The 12M Catalac 41 is considered a limited production cruising catamaran designed for live aboard cruisers and perfect for passage making. The S/V Angel Louise, pictured above, completed an Atlantic crossing in July 2011 and back across again in 2014. Ed and Sue Kelly began the crossing from Brunswick Georgia and traveled to England via Bermuda and the Azores.

These boats offer a seven berth layout in spacious style with furnishing and trimmings to match. Designed for living in style Full standing 6′ 5″ headroom in both hulls and wheelhouse, and of course plenty of room when you sit down to your meal in the main saloon  making entertaining on the Catalac an absolute pleasure. The galley is located in the port hull and offers hot and cold pressurized water, a refrigerator, a four burner hob, oven and stainless steel sink with integral draining board. The central saloon area with its octagonal table has permanent seating for five in luxury on 6 inch thick cushions, with more than ample elbow room. Everywhere you’ll discover masses of locker space.

The build quality is outstanding. It should be noted that a 12M Catalac 41 survived the worst storm on record in the Pacific (Queen’s Birthday Storm), at ground zero, without losing it’s mast or any of her crew receiving injuries. What makes this important, is two other catamarans were damaged in the same storm, and every monohull in the area was rolled and dismasted with loss of life.

These boats have the reputation of being a very well built, seaworthy boat and have been called the best live aboard cruising catamaran ever made.

The interior steering position is just aft of the saloon. Full instrumentation and dual controls for the twin diesels, plus all the desirable navigational aids are standard. Space is also available for a radar display. The helmsman’s built-in seat provides a high degree of comfort for any watches spent at the wheel, in the company of those relaxing in the saloon.

These boats have another great feature common to all Catalacs which are the cabin windows. They actually open. The first position is 1/2 open which allows airflow in rain storms without allowing water in the boat. The 2nd position is completely removed, and window screens can be fitted into the window openings.

12m power catamaran

This is a perfect example of the thought that went into the cabin design. Airflow remains constant leaving the cabin comfortable in tropical climates. All windows in a Catalac are tempered glass and look as good today as the day they were installed 25 years ago. Yes, this is a rare and rather expensive feature when compared to the plastic windows in most cruising catamarans, yet it’s entirely worth it as it’s another reason why these boats seem to age gracefully.

12M Catalac 41 sailing characteristics

Nobody can suggest that there is 100% safety at sea, but the 12M Catalac 41 has been thoroughly designed to promote that aspect of cruising above all other considerations. The famous Catalac underwater hull configuration and the boat’s short rig allows the boat to slip sideways when over-canvassed in strong wind conditions; thus creating more leeway rather than the dreaded capsize that others fear. The low aspect Bermudan sloop rig has been chosen to bring the centre of effort down to give you and your family that added feeling of comfort and safety every time you are caught out in stronger wind conditions than you would normally seek. Sailing a 12M Catalac 41 is a very rewarding, comfortable experience.

Despite the designed-in safety features the Catalac is by no means a slouch. She will sail easily to 40 degrees off the wind at a steady speed of 7-8 knots in an 18 knot breeze and in stronger conditions can easily maintain a speed of 9-10 knots. Off wind the performance is not bettered, but sail in the Catalac in a 30-40 knot wind, stand upright in the cockpit, walk around comfortably throughout the cabins, make yourself a cup of coffee in the galley, and then look over your shoulder to that similar sized monohull, with stanchions and windows awash, wallowing from side to side, preparing herself for a wild broach or heeling at 35 degrees, their crew harnessed to any available strong point, with an occasional bucket of water being thrown down their necks. You will compliment yourself on your choice of an extremely comfortable, safe, seagoing sailing yacht, your 12M Catalac 41.

Headsail reefing by ROTOSTAY

The Rotostay reefkit is a heavy duty reefing system of the ‘Revolving  Stay’ type and is included in the standard inventory of all the Catalacs. Reefkit is a made-to-measure headsail reefing kit which entirely replaces the forestay, bottle-screw, etc. from masthead to sternhead. By supplying a system which not only includes the top and bottom swivels but also the connecting forestay and mast and stemhead toggles we can ensure that your mast is both safely and correctly stayed. All structural components are machined or forged from marine grade 316 stainless steel.

12m power catamaran

The Reefkit is supplied with a halyard slider which replaces the conventional two-part halyard arrangement and allows the reefing genoa to be hoisted using the existing mast halyard. This arrangement has proved extremely popular with cruiser racers as the headsail can be handled in the conventional way. The luff bolt-rope is fed into the entry section of the Rotostay spar but instead of the sail head being shackled directly to the genoa halliard it is connected via the halyard Slider. The Halliard Slider is basically a hollow swivel that can slide up and down the luff spar. When connected between the sail and the halyard it permits the sail to roll up without twisting the halliard around the spar. The sealed bearing design allows for full luff tensioning using the halliard winch in the normal way. When the sail is to be left furled up for any length of time the halliard can be eased off a little thus relaxing the sail/luff tension. In the 12M Catalac 41 we have retained all the traditional elements of cruising but have added further dimensions in terms of safety, accommodation, comfort and when necessary, speed.

Passage making in a 12M Catalac 41 is an exhilarating experience. If the wind pipes up too much, then jib furling gear quickly rolls the headsail around the forestay to shorten sail. And with the benefit of slab reefing on the main, sail handling could not be easier. Instead of heeling and bucking its way through a heavy sea, the Catalac remains a stable platform for all who sail. Even children who may be bored by long passages can play happily and safely below deck, or in the spacious cockpit.

A 12M Catalac 41 will glide you safely and at speed out-performing cruiser/racer monohulls of a similar size. These boats won their class in ARC Atlantic crossing competition several times. So you arrive, whatever your destination, quickly as well as in style and comfort.

Cruising in comfort

The Lack family did not compromise on sailing performance or comfort in the 12M Catalac 41. Below decks you will find each of the main sleeping compartments and the main saloon finished to a high standard with just the right amount of woodwork to enhance the few functional synthetic finishes they adopted. The owner’s quarters on the 12M Catalac 41 are very well appointed and include a forward starboard cabin with double berth, a large adjoining dressing room with vanity unit and chest of drawers. To the rear of this is the large shower room and head with hot and cold pressurized water. A second head compartment is positioned in the port hull.

The 12M  “Leeway” from Spearfish South Dakota

In October of 2005 Hurricane Wilma struck near Jupiter, FL with 125 mph winds. Jupiter is about 80 miles south of Melbourne, FL. Although we escaped the full fury of this storm, Melbourne, FL received more than a glancing blow. There was a Catalac 41 moored in a sheltered mooring field in Melbourne. As the winds increased to around 85 mph, she broke her mooring line. Cast adrift, the storm winds drove her upon a rocky causeway. For hours on end that boat was pounded on the large rocks on the north side of the causeway. The crew was not onboard, and there was absolutely nothing that could be done.  I heard about this boat on a local radio station, so… as the hurricane moved across Florida, and the winds abated, I grabbed my camera and headed for that boat. The Catalac 41 survived but with serious damage to her port hull. She was salvaged and there was an attempt at repair and refit. Unfortunately, the refit was botched. The inexperience of those responsible for the refit left this boat an abandoned wreck.

HI I AM LOOKING FOR A CATALAC 12m

Hi – I am also looking for a Catalac 12metre – rigged for single handed sailing – hopefully in the Meditteranean – in good condition. I am an experienced catamaran skipper, having had a 8 metre c Catalac for several years. Sheila
