Boat of the Week: Meet the Speedy, 7,800 HP Superyacht That Thinks It’s a Ferrari

Breathe the word “Superfast” in the company of any red-blooded car aficionado, and it’s guaranteed to conjure-up images of Ferrari’s classic 500 Superfast from the ‘60s and, more recently, the thundering V-12-engined 812 Superfast.
So, if you’re Italy’s AB Yachts and you’re looking to name your fastest, most thrilling yacht ever—the 68-mph, 7,800-horsepower, AB 100—you could do worse than christen it “Superfast.”

The Viareggio-based yard—part of the NEXT Yacht Group—created this first AB 100 Superfast for a European client who, according to AB Yachts’ head of sales Giacomo Benelli, had an all-consuming passion for going fast. Very fast. So instead of the typical three 1,990-hp MAN diesels that come with the regular AB 100, he opted for a trio of 2,600-hp MTUs. The result; a pedal-to-the-metal top speed of 59 knots, or 68 mph, and a still-speedy 58-mph cruising speed.

And as with the “standard” AB 100, the Superfast delivers all that thrust through triple water jets from Sweden’s Marine Jet Power. A single joystick controls the jets, which are configured with steerable outer units and a fixed, central thruster.
One impressive claim from AB is that at a cruising speed of around 50 knots, the Superfast’s fuel burn is slightly less than it is at 25 knots. According to Benelli, it’s all down to the design of the 100’s slippery, semi-displacement hull, and the efficiency of the MJP waterjets and MTUs.
“We’ve been building fast yachts since 1992, and for those 30 years, the only type of propulsion we’ve used is the water jet,” says Benelli. “The Superfast also draws just over four feet, which is perfect for the shallow waters of the Bahamas.”
The interior has a contemporary open design, with large windows. Courtesy AB Yachts
They also offer real benefits in handling. Like some oversized jet-ski, the Superfast can turn on a dime and—amazingly—stop virtually in its own length, almost from top speed, by reversing the thrust.
The hull itself is constructed from vacuum-bagged GRP with carbon fiber reinforcement in key areas, and adhesives developed for the aerospace industry.
While the Superfast is based closely on the design of the original AB 100, its development coincided with a major redesign of the series. The key changes included the addition of oversize, almost full-length hull windows and sole-to-ceiling salon windows.

AB’s in-house engineers and designers also came-up with a clever design for the swim platform and beach club.
Mounted on a four-link, pantograph-style hydraulic mechanism, the oversize center section of the swim platform can cantilever upwards, revealing a tender and toy garage. With the platform in its raised position, it also makes one awesome diving board.
The new hull layout also focuses on providing plenty of sunning and lounging areas. From the oversized rear cockpit, with its almost full-width sofa and sun pad, to the huge forward deck with its vast cushions and U-shaped sofa and table, it’s a sun lover’s dream.
The space-age helm is much in keeping with the boat’s speed. Courtesy AB Yachts
There are also tanning beds up on the top deck flybridge. But lowish stanchion rails might make it precarious for kids, and the lack of shade would be a problem in the mid-day sun.
One major focus with this new Superfast is its emphasis on open indoor/outdoor living. Huge glass doors between the salon and back deck, fold away completely to connect the two areas. And, at the request of the owner, the usual partition between the salon and the helm was removed to open up the entire living and dining space.
“Everything is on one level, so there’s an easy flow throughout the boat,” says Benelli.

Below decks, the owner went for a four-cabin layout with beds for 10, including a 22-foot-wide, full-beam master stateroom amidships. He also specified a below-deck galley.
Apart from gaining bragging rights, will any owner take the new Superfast to its super-fast 68-mph top speed?

“Probably not all the time. But hitting almost 60 knots feels like you’re in a Formula 1 car. A Ferrari, obviously,” adds Benelli. “It is a lot of fun.”
But it also gets you places fast. “Portofino to St. Tropez takes less than a couple of hours. Miami to Cat Cay, Bahamas takes 45 minutes,” says Benelli. “There’s a reason we call it Superfast.”

Boat Test: 2024 Jeanneau NC 895 Series 2
- By Randy Vance
- August 26, 2024
Pocket cruisers are designed to be the “transformers” of the waterway, and Jeanneau expertly engineered its NC 895 Series 2 to be Optimus Prime. It is unlikely there is a more carefully planned deck and berth space on any vessel in the new 895’s size class. That is immediately clear from the starboard boarding door to the cockpit. That spacious area is made more so by opening the three-panel sliding door to the salon, joining those areas with fresh sea air. All the salon side windows open as well, and as do two sliding-sunroof panes. And if the sea breeze isn’t cool enough, shut all the glass and run the air conditioner. It’s reversible to create heat on a frosty morning as well.
Interior and Accessories
In the cockpit, the aft lounge slides forward on rails to offer easy passage from the starboard side of the transom platform to the portside transom boarding door. Remove the couch cushions and rigid seatback to reveal that boarding option. Underway, the lounge slides aft to expand the cockpit. In the aft position, a lounge folds from the port gunwale to join the aft lounge, transforming the area into a conversation pit. It’s completed by an opposing cushioned bench seat against the slider, and the entire area converts to a sun pad by lowering a cocktail table, padded with cushions to match the seats.
Steps to the port and starboard catwalks to the bow are always accessible, and the starboard walkway is accessible from the helm for easy mooring. The narrower port catwalk leads to a triple lounge on the foredeck with an added cushion for seating or for kneeling to address the windlass. The starboard catwalk is wider, and the helm-station door opens to it, giving the singlehanded skipper snappy access to a midship cleat for making fast to the dock.
If instead of going forward you aim for the salon, Optimus Prime is evident in the dinette with a folding cocktail table that can be lowered to lounge level to complete a third berth. Or leave the table in dinette position but fold the forward half back to the aft half, like closing a book, and the forward lounge seatback folds aft, transforming that to a companion seat for the skipper. Even the skipper’s techie seat swivels to face the salon, should the boat be at anchor.
The galley also transforms from a compact sink and stove thanks to a removable panel that serves to extend the food-prep counter slightly into the cockpit through the sliding door. It’s welcome added space and connects in securely.
The three-panel sliding door separating the salon from the cockpit opens wide from starboard to port, making cockpit and salon one large gathering area. It’s optimal deck space with prime seating all around.
Pretty fair competition for the NC 895 Series 2 comes from Cutwater’s 288C ($339,937 base price). Comparable in length, beam and preferred power, the Cutwater offers a somewhat similar deck plan, with a convertible dinette in the salon and convertible aft lounge that folds away like a card trick to open the cockpit or give access to the transom platform. The Cutwater’s salon and forward berth offer comfortable accommodations, but instead of an aft stateroom berth, there’s a double berth tucked beneath the dinette on the salon deck. It’s ideal for kids or teens—perhaps a little cozier than Jeanneau’s more-spacious midberth below deck.
Both are best powered with a pair of Yamaha 250s with electric steering. The Helm Master EX joystick full maneuverability is an essential option, I think, and I would insist on the bow thruster too. With those tools, anyone can grease a boat in the tightest marina fearlessly. On plane, the power steering makes the vessel respond like a sportboat, and both vessels are comparable in displacement and will achieve speeds in the mid-40s with a light load.
When equipped with full maneuverability and Yamaha’s integrated autopilot through a Garmin GPS display, the autopilot can be addressed through the joystick, the GPS or a dedicated autopilot panel (a feature I’d omit as redundant). At 35 mph, the 895 boasts 150 miles of range using a safe 90 percent of its 158-gallon fuel capacity. Gentle canal cruising at 5 mph will take you almost 300 miles. A 2-foot-3-inch motor-up draft means getting into the skinniest marinas or past numerous shoaled-in miles of the Great Loop.
Read Next: Jeanneau NC 1295 FLY
When cruising the Great Loop, there’s a spacious cabin below deck with a forward V-berth and a surprisingly spacious midship berth. Separated by doors, they provide comfortable privacy. The companionway to them is via three wide steps for easy footing; on the way down, you’ll pass the circuit panel. A galley includes a microwave, sink and fridge, plus ample storage for cruising supplies. Lockers under the V-berth and a hanging locker provide space to store clothing, but the bulk of the storage on board is found, not surprisingly, under a cockpit hatch, where a large compartment can hold supplies securely, keeping them dry and ready for use.
With near-robotic autopilot controls, a vessel full of versatile transforming accommodations both topside and below, the Jeanneau NC 895 Series 2 is the Optimus Prime in its class for cruisers.
How We Tested
- Engines: Twin Yamaha 250 outboards
- Drive/Props: Outboard/Saltwater Series II 15.5″ x 17″ 3-blade stainless steel
- Gear Ratio: 1.75:1 Fuel Load: 75 gal. Water on Board: 0 gal. Crew Weight: 500 lb.
High Points
- Stand-up paddleboard and kayak racks on the roof double as handrails when traversing the gunwale passageways.
- The three-panel sliding windows open the entire salon to the cockpit.
- The convertible dinette seatback tilts aft to create a two-person lounge alongside the captain.
- The transom walkway is covered by the aft cockpit lounge seat. Passage there requires sliding the seat forward.

AB Yachts’ Speedy Superyacht
- By Diane M. Byrne
- April 22, 2022
Dating back to its founding 30 years ago, AB Yachts has focused on high-performance yachts equipped with water jets. Given that AB Yachts is an Italian shipyard, that emphasis on speed comes packaged with sleek styling. The builder continues to add larger models, and when it launched Hull No. 1 of its 100-foot AB 100 series in 2016, it announced a 52-knot top-end speed. Other semicustom maxis existed in this size range, but none clocked on the radar gun quite like this one did. Advances in engine technology and lightweight construction have since allowed the shipyard to make the yacht even faster. The same series is now reportedly capable of a 54-knot maximum speed.
Which wasn’t enough for one particular customer—or for AB Yachts.
Together, they created the AB 100 Superfast, with what the yard says is a 59-knot maximum velocity and a cruising speed of 53 knots. This makes the AB 100 Superfast not just the fastest boat in the builder’s range but also a boat that’s faster than most, if not all, other yachts of its size from any shipyard. In fact, the AB 100 Superfast’s top speed is about 25 knots higher than that of other high-profile maxis in the 100- to 110-foot range.
The owner and shipyard shared the belief that an invitation to customize a semicustom yacht should indeed mean customization. AB Yachts allows clients to tailor exterior styling and interior design, and the AB 100 Superfast differs from its predecessor in several ways. The avid cruiser wanted to take his personal bond with the sea to a higher level. “That was the key goal that we interpreted in the interest of our owner,” says Gennaro Candida De Matteo, the CEO of AB Yachts’ parent company, Next Yacht Group.
The first hint is seen in the AB 100 Superfast’s profile, which has more glass than the AB 100. Along the main deck, the glass is nearly sole-to-ceiling, complemented by glass insets in the lowered bulwarks. The dark tint lends the illusion that the glass wraps uninterrupted from one side of the yacht and around to the other. Belowdecks, the small oval ports are gone, replaced with two long stretches of glass to port and starboard.
Aft, like any large yacht, the AB 100 Superfast has a table and settee. The setup seems unassuming enough for enjoying alfresco meals or the spirited ride. But at the press of a button, both the table and the settee’s backrest lower to ensure that the owner and his guests truly have uninterrupted views when they’re seated inside the open-plan main deck. (On a related note, the owner opted to increase the perception of volume inside by eliminating the bulkhead between the helm and dining area.) A similarly lowering settee backrest is on the flybridge too.
Two more cruise-enhancing surprises are at the waterline. The first: The yacht has a nearly full-beam settee nestled against the transom, providing the ultimate front-row seat to the swimming and water-toy action. Consider it a permanent open-air beach club. The second surprise is how the toys launch.
“This is one of the most interesting features of this boat,” De Matteo says. At the press of a button, the backrest rises up to reveal the garage. The transformer-type swim platform rises too, so a RIB or other toys can slide directly into the water.
When peace and quiet are what the owner and his guests want, they can retire belowdecks, where there are accommodations for eight. This owner chose two twins, a VIP and a full-beam master stateroom. While some maxi opens look and feel tight below, the AB 100 Superfast doesn’t—even with its 22-foot-3-inch beam being comparable to that of slightly larger maxis from other builders. Adding to the owner’s comfort, a port within the picture window in his stateroom opens.
Even with the emphasis on his own enjoyment, the owner and AB Yachts didn’t overlook the practical needs of the four-person crew. For example, stairs by the inside helm—which the owner designed with the shipyard to achieve an automotive-type look in carbon fiber and leather—lead directly down to the Corian-outfitted galley and crew mess. The laundry area is right here as well. The foredeck leisure area, meanwhile, has significant stowage beneath the equally sizable sun bed.
Most people who end up seeing the AB 100 Superfast cutting across the horizon will probably consider the yacht to be a maxed-out maxi. Yes, it is an unabashedly fast yacht—and one of the fastest superyachts in the world to boot. But from the American walnut soles and furnishings to the view-enhancing features and re-imagined use of space, the AB 100 Superfast also reflects a clear, custom vision.
One that just happens to be capable of nearly 60-knot speeds.
Power Punch
The AB 100 Superfast gets its head-turning performance from triple 2,600 hp MANs with water jets. The AB 100, by comparison, had three 1,900 hp MANs and water jets. Kevlar and carbon-fiber construction keep weight down, part of the shipyard’s practice across its models.
American Success Story
While AB Yachts’ American clients are similar to European counterparts in being attracted to speed, the AB 100 series’ 4-foot-3-inch draft has more specifically led to sales stateside. Clients who regularly cruise between South Florida and the Bahamas need the shallow-water access.
Next Yacht Group’s Next Move
GB Investment Holdings, which has interests in artificial intelligence and luxury properties, is AB Yachts’ parent company. It named its yachting division Next Yacht Group to reflect a future focus. It plans to leverage its AI and resort knowledge to improve the yachts and customer experiences.

AB Yachts launches its first AB 100 superyacht
AB Yachts has launched its first AB 100 superyacht hull, named Spectre , ahead of a scheduled delivery this summer.
The 30 metre AB 100 is built in GRP and Carbon and will hit a maximum speed of 52 knots, thanks to her three MAN engines producing 1900 hp each and MJP waterjets. This would put Spectre firmly in the list of the world’s fastest superyachts .
With naval architecture and design completed in-house by AB Yachts , the first AB 100 yacht has been developed to bring a family feeling to its striking, sporty appearance. Outside, her hull and superstructure is painted in two different tones of metallic silver to highlight her aggressive lines.
Her outdoor areas allow guests to enjoy an exciting blast in comfort, with a second steering position on her flybridge and an L-shaped sofa and two sunbeds for guests. The foredeck of the first AB 100 hull is fitted with two coffee tables, a u-shaped sofa and a comfy sunbed.
Inside, Spectre is furnished in light grey tones and flooded with natural light on account of her large lateral windows. Her interior is divided into a lounge area, equipped with a comfortable sofa and 75” TV, and a dining area that can seat eight around a marble table.
She can accommodate eight in two guest cabins with double beds, one VIP cabin and one master cabin, all of which have private bathrooms.
The AB 100 design is the first of many new projects that the yard’s parent company, Fipa Group, is completing for the 2016 summer season.

Hard to find good brokers like Robert! My experience with his Company earns a five star review
I’ve sold two boats and purchased one through Fillingham Yachts. Rob and Micki are exceptional people who offer a high level of service.
Great group to find the boat of your dreams!
This is our second experience with Fillingham Yacht Sales, and to be perfectly honest, probably not our last! Both times we found them to be professional, polite and completely transparent when brokering our deals.
Robert and Micky Siviter were a pleasure to work with during the 2 happiest days that the boat owner experiences. my wife and I went through 6 more of these events previously and this was the smoothest and friendliest by far. “good value” with a 10% fee…is it possible?
Excellent service and professionalism!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
About as easy a selling process as you can get. Mike, Micki, and the whole team at Fillingham made it painless to sell my 2013 Sea Hunt. Thanks again to the team for taking such good care of me.
I recently purchased a 1991 Sabre 38 MK II where Fillingham Yacht Sales was the Owner Broker. The sale was handled by Micki Siviter and Greg Petrat. The whole experience was excellent and what can be a complicated and difficult process went very smoothly due to Micki’s and Greg’s efforts. Both were always readily available and always went above and beyond to help me through the process. Thank you so much.
Greg Petrat did a great job listing and showing our sailboat. As a long time sailor, Greg was able to “coach” prospective buyers on pros and cons and ultimately found a great buyer and new home for our boat.
Micki Siviter made the closing process very easy ensuring a timely and smooth transaction particularly when we encountered a hiccup along the way.
I enjoyed working the the team at Fillingham Yachts and would highly recommend them to represent potential sellers and buyers.
We have bought and sold numerous boats by them. Very reliable and professional.
Great people to deal with. They made the process easy and went out of their way work around my schedule. I highly recommend Jim, Micki and the rest of the team!
Robert did great job selling our 36 hatteras.we r so thankful for Rob & Micki
I have been using the services of Fillingham Yachts for 15 years. They are truly people who care about their customers. I have purchased and sold 10 boats over the years and they handled all of the details promptly and professionally. I have had them find boats for me and they came through with flying colors. I had worked with Bob and Shar Fillingham in the beginning and the past 3 transactions with Rob Siviter the owner. The last boat they sold for me was a 2012 Grady White 275 Freedom. They found this boat for me a couple of years ago. The entire sales process from listing the boat for sale until the money was in my bank was a short 4 weeks. Can’t say enough about how they sell like it the only boat they are selling! They will do the job for you so give them a shot and find out what it is like to deal with true professionals in the yachting business. JW. December 2018
Top of the line service. Worked very hard to get my boat sold. Great job processing the paperwork. Lots of communication!!! Great Job
My husband and I recently purchased a 330 SeaRay through Robert at Fillingham Yatchs. It was a pleasure working with Rob and Micki throughout the whole process. Rob was very patient and knowledgeable when it came to answering our many questions, and addressing our concerns. We live up north, and Rob gladly handled the marine survey on our behalf, and more importantly, directed and followed through with all the necessary repairs as he said he would. After the purchase, Rob set a day aside for us to fly into Tampa to take us out for the day to familiarize us with the boat and to make sure we were comfortable with all aspects of it. He also took it upon himself to arrange transportation of the boat from Tampa to Miami, and even went as far as meeting the boat in Miami to ensure there were no problems. Rob went above and beyond what had to be done to insure we were happy. We would highly recommend using Rob to anyone looking to purchase a boat. His guidance, actions and hands on approach made purchasing a boat from out of state so effortless and simple. Throughout this whole process he also has become a friend, and we will always appreciate what he did for us. Thanks so much Rob for all your help. We will definitely be reaching out to you when we’re ready to move up to a bigger boat. Love to see you guys when you’re in Miami.
Robert did an amazing job selling my SeaVee. I would use him again.
Just wanted to let anyone know that this company is outstanding.I purchased a Sea Vee center console through these guys.It was one of the most pleasant experiences I have ever had.I would gladly refer these folks.I am from Charleston,S.C. and had never dealt with a broker. These folks are TOP SHELF.
Fillingham yachts are the best! Micki took extremely good care of me providing information and guidance and quick callbacks to any questions. Al Lima my broker was there for me every minute from looking at boats to picking one out and making an offer to closing and helping to understand all the regulations and paperwork. I would highly recommend this group to anybody purchasing or selling their boat.
Robert and Micki are both nice people and good at what they do. My boat had some serious engine problems discovered during the Sea Trial/Survey; anti-freeze in the oil. Robert arranged for a mechanic, the problem got fixed and the deal was completed. I am in CA, the boat in FL so it was GREAT help to me that he was willing to deal with it so I did not need to make a trip to FL. I would HIGHLY recommend and definitely do business with them again.
Thank you so much to Mike and Micki for all your help and professionalism dealing with the sale of our Yacht. Both went up and above requirements to help during Covid 19. Our borders were closed to Canada and they both made the experience very easy and were in contact giving updates and support throughout the whole time. I would recommend both parties to anyone who wants to sell their boats if you want an assured, professional and confident sale. Fillingham Yachts should be proud to have two expert people on their team. Regards and thanks again for everything Glenn and Sue Chapman
Robert did a great job marketing and selling our boat! He is very detailed, follows through on all promises and is determined to get the transaction closed. Also, selling the boat was difficult for us and he was sensitive to this transitional time in our lives. In addition, when it came time for closing, Micki made sure everything was in order and didn’t forget about us once the boat was delivered to her new owners. They are a great team!
Rob and Micki were great to work with and all of their five star ratings are well deserved! I was on the purchasing end as a remote buyer and they made the whole experience seamless. They answered my many questions and provided great recommendations for insurance, transportation and surveyor. Micki efficiently took care of all of the paperwork and explained what I needed to do after the purchase. They are top quality people and I would highly recommend them!
I’ve purchased and sold multiple boats through Fillingham Yacht Sales. Rob and Micki provide exceptional communication and outstanding customer service. 10 Stars!
Mike, and Mickey were without a doubt the best people I have ever bought a boat from. From their quick call backs to the absolute no delay paperwork signing and approvals and the best part was their knowledge and professionalism. I didn’t buy a boat from a broker I’m proud to say I bought a boat from my now life long friends.
We worked with Al Lima. We actually met him because the broker we had was always unavailable. The vessel we wanted to look at was listed with Al. He was super!!! always early to our appointments, wasn’t pushy, he was actually someone we would love to just sit and chat with. The whole experience was awesome. Not only was he extra helpful w information we requested but was super quick about getting the answers for us. I would definitely recommend him. To any one. Thank you Al… we are in love with Mama!
I recently purchased a 1991 Sabre 38 MK II where Fillingham Yacht Sales was the Owner Broker. The sale was handled by Micki Siviter and Greg Petrat. Rob and Micki were easy to work with and extremely helpful. Couldn’t ask for a better broker when buying a boat, they went the extra mile and made the transaction easy! Professional and personable! We highly recommend their team when purchasing a boat! Thank you for everything, we are very happy!
I recently closed on a 28 sea ray sundeck. Robert and Micki went way above my expectations and were extremely helpful and communicated throughout the whole process. To add to it, I’m a remote buyer. I showed up to check out the boat . When I decided to buy it, I let Robert know and he did everything that needed to be done for me and more. Highly recommend! read more
Great people to work with. Process was seemless. Micki and Anna kept us informed throughout. Highly recommend Fillingham!
Fillingham made is very easy to list, show and sell our boat. Once the buyer was identified all the paperwork and details were handled quickly. Great service and very knowledgeable, highly recommend!
Fillingham Yachts provided us with very good service during the time our sailboat was listed with them. Their agents responded with professionalism and genuine concern as our boat took a few years to sell. Their advice was on target as our agent read the market and met with prospective buyers as soon as interest appeared. During the sale, the business office expedited the process quickly and smoothly, making the final process easy. We highly recommend Fillingham Yachts. read more
We had a great experience buying our first sailboat. Although Jim Clark was representing the seller, he went out of his way to make sure that we had a positive experience pre and post purchase. With us being out of town he was there to support us and recommend the various service providers that we need. read more
Very professional service provided by very personable and helpful people.
Mike was awesome in helping me purchase a Sea Ray 310 Sundancer. Not only did he assist me with negotiating a great deal with the seller but he was always available to help me with any questions I may have had with regard to the boat. In addition, he pointed out some potential issues the boat may have and advised on some early maintenance items that I should attend to. This was all before purchasing the boat, so that I knew exactly what I was buying and what some additional costs may be. I also had to go and see the boat a few times to get photos for insurance, etc. and Mike was always more than willing to be there for me. Micki was also great in helping me with all of the administration (title, registration, purchasing documents, etc.). All in all this was an exceptional boat buying experience, and I would recommend Fillingham Yachts Sales to anyone looking for a boat! read more
Perfect experience working with Rob and Micki. Rob helped with all the details of narrowing down the boats I wanted to look at and then working with me through the sea trial and negotiations. Then as we got down to a time crunch for the closing Micki went above and beyond to help make sure everything got done on time. Can’t imagine a better experience. The lender they referred me too was fantastic as well. read more
Great service, knowledgeable, handled the details perfect and I would recommend Fillingham Yacht Sales to anyone buying or selling.
Robert and Micki did a great job selling my Pursuit. They provided a professional and honest assessment of the boats value. Got it sold efficiency. Micki produced all required paperwork, and got it out in a timely manner. I would recommend Fillingham Yachts for your goto boat broker.
