Preventing Car Rollback at Boat Launches: What You Need to Know

The Archimedes is a $100 million superyacht owned by the estate of American billionaire James Simons. Simons, a renowned mathematician and philanthropist in his own right, was the founder of Renaissance Technologies. The yacht's name pays tribute to the Greek mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse, considered the greatest mathematician of ancient history and one of the greatest of all time.

Archimedes of Syracuse lived from c. 287 BCE to c. 212 BCE in the ancient city of Syracuse in Sicily. Though few details of his life are known, he is regarded as one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity. He is credited with significant contributions to mathematics, physics, engineering, astronomy, and invention.

Archimedes' mathematical achievements include deriving an approximation of pi, defining the Archimedean spiral, and devising a system for expressing very large numbers. He also applied mathematics to physical phenomena, working on statics and hydrostatics. One of his most notable discoveries is the law of buoyancy known as Archimedes' principle, which states that a body immersed in a fluid experiences an upthrust equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces.

In addition to his mathematical work, Archimedes designed innovative machines such as the screw pump, compound pulleys, and defensive war machines to protect Syracuse from invasion. He is also said to have designed a claw-like weapon called "the ship shaker" to lift attacking ships out of the water, and to have improved the power and accuracy of the catapult.

The yacht Archimedes, inspired by the ancient mathematician, exemplifies luxury, performance, and elegance. It boasts impressive performance specifications, including a top speed of 16 knots and a range of 6,000 nautical miles. The opulent yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests across 6 cabins, with quarters for 18 crew members, making it a true floating palace.

Captains' Club Spotlight: Capt. Christopher Walsh of 68m M/Y Archimedes

M/Y Archimedes in the Northwest Passage

The BOAT International Captains’ Club launched just a few months ago, but now welcomes 100 superyacht captains in its ranks. The idea behind the club is to help facilitate contact and the exchange of information and experiences for superyacht captains. Our inaugural Q&A features Capt. Christopher Walsh of the 67.75-meter M/Y Archimedes as he shares his passion for the industry, best cruising destinations, plus his one piece of advice for other captains.

How did you end up becoming a captain?

I am the seventh generation of seafarers in my family, and I was always drawn to the ocean. I was a bit of a ne’er-do-well when I was younger, but I started off on all manner of sailing boats and the ocean is a great leveler and teacher. I spent a long period doing crossings, deliveries, working on tugboats, ferries, and even running a former presidential yacht. I then had a chance meeting with a local man and after helping him find a motor yacht — he then asked me to run it. I had never considered being captain of a motor yacht before, but 29 years later I am still working with the same family.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a captain?

I would probably be working in the marine field but in some other capacity, probably as an engineer, or building or repairing boats. I would have to be paying to do the things, like exploring and diving, that I am paid to do now.

Favorite cruising destination?

If I could wake up in any destination tomorrow morning, it would be back in the High Arctic, which we visited in 2004 and 2017. It was the most challenging and interesting destination I have visited. Every day felt like an adventure, [and] you felt like a true explorer, which was why I got into boats in the first place.

What destination is still on your bucket list?

There are lots of destinations that we haven’t ticked off yet; it’s a big world. We are talking about trying to do a trip to Svalbard and maybe the White Sea. We would also love to visit a few more Pacific islands, such as the Carolines, the Marshalls, and the Gilberts.

Favorite place for diving?

I have loved diving in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomons, Fiji, and Dominica. One place that stands out is Wakatobi in Indonesia — the water was so clear it was like swimming through glass and the color and growth of the coral was truly amazing.

If you were marooned on a desert island, which crewmember would you want with you?

We have a fantastic team so I don’t think I could pick one. I will have to stick with Wilson the Volleyball.

Most memorable moment on board?

When we first got up to the Arctic, we were about 60 miles from land and started to encounter some pretty heavy ice. We were working our way through it when we came across a polar bear and her cub that were sitting on a small piece with narwhals nearby. It was sort of like they were there as a meet-and-greet committee and to remind us how fragile their environment is.

What is your one top tip for other captains?

Continue to always learn and get dedicated, talented crewmembers and listen to them — it’s always a team effort.

The inaugural BOAT International Captains’ Club event is scheduled for the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show. Membership is currently open to active captains of sailing yachts longer than 30 meters LOA and motor yachts longer than 40 meters LOA. Through fire and flood, yacht crew of Archimedes train to go it alone

By Dorie Cox

Up to their armpits in water and covered in soot, the crew of M/Y Archimedes immersed themselves in cold weather and damage control training during live fire and water simulations with Resolve Maritime Academy in Fort Lauderdale on Oct. 30.

As hatch doors closed in on half of the yacht’s 17 crew, water poured in through nearly 10 breaches to the “ship’s hull” as they systematically and quickly hammered in wooden plugs, and attached rubber seals and metal buckets to stop the fast flow into the two-story shipping container.

Meanwhile, real smoke and heat began to fill the shipboard firefighting simulator as the other half of the crew suited up in self-contained breathing apparatus gear and filed into the dark container to practice shipboard firefighting tactics in the training vessel Gray Manatee.

Now underway on an 8,500-mile trip to South America and Antarctica, the crew of the 222-foot (68m) Feadship took the training seriously. Where division into two groups often creates competition, in this case it fostered teamwork. After the groups switched simulators, everyone immediately shared with each other what they learned and how to improve.

“Teamwork makes the dream work,” said a soaking wet Capt. Christopher Walsh after hammering supports to shore up the sides of the “hull” in the wet trainer.

Clearly, he has used this phrase many times, but his crew agree. He’s been around the world seven times and has earned their respect. And in return, he respects them.

“The crew do not have fear, but more, they think about how they’re going to move forward,” Capt. Walsh said. “It’s dangerous. We’re out there by ourselves. We need the team to think ahead and to think about planning. It’s rare to get practice like this, we are better prepared now than we were earlier today.”

There has been increased interest in damage control for superyacht class vessels, according to Resolve Maritime Academy Director Chauncey Naylor. In Archimedes ’ case, AIG requested the training for the Antarctic region to qualify the boat for insurance for the trip.

Many crew have had simulated training, but few have learned about cold conditions. The entire group had classroom training on topics such as how to maintain water flow through firefighting equipment, how to prevent freezing of free surface water, and what stability and structural failure issues can occur.

“Where we go is not a milk run. We rely on each other,” Capt. Walsh said. “It helps to better build confidence, to be up to the task if an emergency arises. Between us, we have hundreds of years of experience, but we haven’t seen everything.”

Pondering emergencies at sea is scary, Capt. Walsh said.

“The illusion is that on these multimillion-dollar boats you’re invulnerable,” Capt. Walsh said. “But it’s a big ocean. There is no 911. Water is supposed to be on the other side of the boat. There’s nothing like water pouring in to give you a dose of reality.”

About Archimedes

In the first ten years after her launch in 2008 Archimedes covered 200,000+ nautical miles, including a record 54 days in the High Arctic (more on which here . The refit she received at Feadship in 2018 covered the LRS 10-year Special Survey and future-proofed her systems for another decade of adventures. It included new AV facilities, fresh teak for the stern platform, painting the sun deck interior floor and a rebuild of the crew mess. Maintenance was carried out on the shaft line, engine supports, gangway, side hull door, tender lift, stern platform door, seawater cooling systems and stabilisers. Parts of the superstructure were repainted and a new antifouling system added, while the generator, heating & air-conditioning, watermaker and fuel oil separator were upgraded.

“ The project was finished on time and on budget ,” says Captain Christopher Walsh. “ This is exactly what one expects from Feadship but not something captains take for granted when carrying out refits without Feadship’s involvement. It was a pleasure to bring Archimedes home .”

A multi-million pound superyacht docked in Bristol over the weekend - much to the excitement and intrigue of the crowd gathered to watch it arrive.

Everybody who witnessed the vessel dock beside M-Shed on Sunday afternoon (August 5) had the same burning question in mind - who owns it?

It is believed the superyacht - which is worth an estimated £76million - is owned by US billionaire James ‘Jim’ Simons.

Here is a rundown of everything we know about Mr Simons...

Pictures show the arrival of the £76million superyacht in Bristol

He’s worth £16billion

Simons is 80-years-old, was born in Massachusetts, America, and previously worked as a maths teacher and Cold War code breaker.

According to Forbes, he is worth an estimated £16million and is the founder of New York City-based hedge fund firm Renaissance Technologies.

Simons founded the firm in 1982 and remained at the head of the company before announcing his retirement in January 2010.

Despite formally stepping down from his duties, Simons continues to hold the position of non-executive chairman.

Who is James 'Jim' Simons?

  • James Simons is the founder of Renaissance Technologies, a legendary quantitative hedge fund firm that manages $50 billion.
  • He founded Renaissance Technologies in 1982 and retired in 2010, but he still plays a role at Renaissance and benefits from its funds.
  • Renaissance Technologies is famous for its Medallion Fund, a black box strategy that is now only open to Renaissance's owners and employees.

Prior to Renaissance Technologies, Simons worked for many years as a mathematics professor at Stony Brook University in New York.

He has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - one of America’s most prestigious educational institutions - and a PhD in mathematics from the University of California.

The superyacht is believed to be owned by US billionaire James 'Jim' Simons

‘World’s smartest billionaire’

In 2006, Financial Times described Simons as the “world’s smartest billionaire” after being named on the paper’s ‘alternative rich list’.

The article highlighted the 80-year-old’s commercial achievements alongside his academic contributions, including a paper he co-authored in 1974 which introduced a breakthrough theory to the world of geometry.

According to the paper, the theory has gained significant prestige since the 1980s for its use in topological quantum field theory.

Why is the yacht in Bristol?

The boat is approximately 68 metres in length and has 18 crew members

Simons’ superyacht the Archimedes docked in Bristol on Sunday afternoon (August 5), having sailed via the Irish Sea.

The vessel is 68 metres long, staffed by 18 members of crew and is worth an estimated £76million.

It was built at the Dutch yacht builder Royal Van Lent and delivered to Simons in 2008.

It is not known if Simons is aboard the Archimedes, though the yacht is not believed to be available for charter, nor is it known how long it may remain in Bristol.

A series of stunning photographs, posted online by Bristol Harbour, documented the yacht’s arrival in to the city - sailing up Avon Gorge, underneath the Clifton Suspension Bridge, via Cumberland Basin and into the harbour.

The yacht is far bigger than anything else currently docked in Bristol harbour

A small crowd of people gathered by M-Shed to see the vessel arrive, with many of those stopping to take pictures.

‘Never seen anything as big’

A local resident, who was having lunch in Wapping Wharf at the time, told Bristol Live it was biggest and most expensive thing they had ever seen.

“I’ve been living at the harbourside for almost two years but I’ve never seen anything as big or expensive as the Archimedes go by,” the resident said.

“I was having lunch at Cargo with some friends as it sailed in and everyone turned to look at it open-mouthed, like that scene at the end of The Goonies.

“It’s definitely the most impressive vessel I’ve seen since I’ve lived here. There were people on both of the upper decks waving and taking pictures.

The Archimedes makes its way through Avon Gorge

“It’s not something you see every day down here, and we get to see quite a lot of awesome boats most days.”

Simons shuns the limelight

The yacht - worth an estimated £76million - dwarfs the cars on the road beside it

According to reports online, Simons shuns the limelights and rarely gives interviews.

In an interview with Seed Magazine in 2006, he explained: “I was on Lou Dobbs for about a microsecond.

“He was doing a piece on teaching, and they interviewed a number of folks. But I’ve never been on TV in any meaningful way. And I don’t really have a desire for that.

“There’s a wonderful quote in Animal Farm. The source of all wisdom in that book is Benjamin the donkey. He observes at one point that ‘God gave me a tail to keep off the flies. But I’d rather of had no tail and no flies.’ So, that’s kind of the way I feel about publicity.”
