'Below Deck' Shows A Piece Of Yacht Charter Season

how long is a below deck yachting season

Even though most reality shows air over the course of several months, they usually film over a very small window, much shorter than the weeks it takes to air the footage. And on a show like Below Deck that takes place during a certain time frame, timing can be very important. So how long is a Below Deck charter season? Well, that depends. If you're thinking specifically of the season of Below Deck filmed for TV, the answer can be just a few weeks — the show tapes over a very short period and Eros charters may each last for about three days, according to Yacht Charter World. If you're speaking more generally about full charter seasons for yachts like the one shown on Below Deck , they can last for months at a time . Depending on where you are and where you want to go, the season starts at different times.

For example, Below Deck films in the Caribbean during the winter, in January — that's part of the regional charter season. That means that January is the prime time to travel in the Caribbean on a huge yacht. But even though Below Deck wraps up quickly, the cast could easily jump to a new gig once their TV commitments are complete, because the full Caribbean charter season is four to five months long. That is a long time to be stuck on boats in close working quarters, which is why Below Deck shows the crew taking breaks, having days off, and unwinding between charters. If not, they'd go insane. They're insane enough without having to work for months straight.

And because renting yachts is a worldwide phenomenon, there's no set time or set place where charters are always going on or come to a total stop. Within reason, everywhere that there's water, you can hire a boat to take you during some part of the year.

For the employees, they can choose to work as much or as little of each season as they like, picking their busy time of year depending on where, when, and how long they want to work.

The time can also be different depending on where you are on the globe, from hot locations where November-April is the preferable season to travel, to the summer season, described by YCF as covering the Mediterranean and Europe, which picks up in May and lasts through October.

If you want to charter a yacht, you can do it at pretty much any time, you just might not encounter the Below Deck crew. To up your chances of meeting the reality TV cast, then heading down to the Bahamas early in the year is your best shot. And it will be lovely weather for a charter.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 plot

Bravo offered this synopsis of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 and it gives you a good sense of what's coming in the new season:

"Capt. Glenn and his comeback team Daisy Kelliher, Gary King and Colin MacRae resume their responsibilities aboard Parsifal III, along with new, dynamic crew members, as they set sail in Sardinia, Italy. Capt. Glenn realizes that his laid-back leadership style has allowed his crew to become too comfortable and starts taking charge of quality control in the interior department, much to Daisy's dismay.

"In the galley, Chef Ileisha’s cooking impresses the guests, but her indecisiveness and co-dependency lead to time-management issues between courses, which causes her to self-destruct. On deck, strong personalities collide, and a power struggle results in a near mutiny, as Gary clashes with his new overconfident deckhand, Chase.

"Two overlapping love triangles further complicate the dynamics on-board, and a shocking hookup puts Colin, Daisy and Gary’s friendship in jeopardy. With a near collision, fire, crew rebellion, gruesome guest injury and two different potentially season-ending engine failures, this is the most captivating and unpredictable season yet of Below Deck Sailing Yacht ."

(Photo: Bravo Media)

Below Deck Sailing Yacht has its return date set. Season five of the reality series will return next month, and Bravo has announced new crew members who will join Capt. Glenn Shephard, Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher, and First Mate Gary King on board the Parsifal III this season.

Chef Cloyce Martin, Chief Engineer Davide Morosi, stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren, and deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch will join the cast for season five of the series, and they will bring some drama with them.

Bravo revealed the following about what is to come in season five:

Capt. Glenn and his expert crew set sail on Parsifal III to the luxury party capital of the world, Ibiza. While Ibiza is known for its sunny day parties and crystal-clear coast, it’s stormy waters ahead for the crew as they navigate blossoming boatmances, competitive co-workers and tense personal dynamics, all while trying to raise the bar every charter. After a distracting love triangle last season that took her focus away from work, Daisy is ready to take the reins back in the interior department with a new sense of energy and determination. However, plans for a stress-free charter season are threatened when her stews question her leadership. On deck, Gary attempts to keep his team motivated as one crew member struggles to learn the ropes. In the galley, Chef Cloyce charms the crew and guests but at only 22, he may be too inexperienced to meet the demands of the high-maintenance charter guests.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht returns on October 7th . The trailer for season five is below.

45 Rules the 'Below Deck' Cast Has to Follow

Rule #1: Don't piss off the captain.

Our product picks are editor-tested, expert-approved. We may earn a commission through links on our site. Why Trust Us?

Getting paid to sail to exotic locations around the world might sound idyllic, but the crew members on Below Deck have it anything but easy. From grueling shifts to demanding guests, it's no wonder every episode brings drama on the high seas. Think you could cut it? Here, we've rounded up the rules of yachting, plus all the ins and outs of filming the reality show. Spoiler: It sounds like a lot of work.

WATCH BELOW DECK ON PEACOCK

Everyone has to apply online.

below deck mediterranean season 2

Yachties who wants to give reality television a try can find the application for Below Deck posted online as Bravo begins casting for each season. All that's required is some basic information, a yachting resumé, and a short video introduction.

Crew members have to meet an age requirement.

below deck season 3

All applicants must be at least 21 years old to join the show.

Visas must be secured before filming.

below deck season 1

Since yachting is an international industry, there's a lot of logistical details involved. All Below Deck crew members are responsible for securing the appropriate visa to work in that season's filming location.

All licenses and certifications must also be secured.

below deck season 2

Potential cast members must provide the proper paperwork that says they are able to work on the boat. "Each of the crew members has to have an STCW, which is a standard set by the maritime industry for watch-keeping and just being on board—it's basic first aid, firefighting," Captain Lee Rosbach told Reality Blurred .

Cast members must sign a contract.

below deck season 2

In order to be on the show, every crew member has to sign a contract with Bravo , as well as a waiver and release form for appearing on television.

Candidates for public office can't be cast.

below deck season 7

Bravo isn't about to let you launch your political career on their show. In order to join the cast, the contract says that you can't be a current candidate for public office. You also can't run for office until a year after your episodes have aired.

Background checks are mandatory.

below deck season 3

The show vets each cast member thoroughly to make sure they can get the job done safely— and they'll also bring the drama. "It's almost impossible to find a real functioning crew and step on with cameras and say go," co-executive producer Rebecca Taylor told The Triton .

Be prepared to work hard.

below deck season 5

No one on the boat is banking a typical eight-hour work day. As former cast member Kate Chastain revealed , cast members sign on for 16-hour or longer shifts.

The cameras are rolling 24/7.

below deck season 5

The crew members are filmed 24 hours a day, seven days a week . In addition to the camera crew on board, there are hidden cameras around the boat, including in cast member's cabins.

Don't expect any privacy.

below deck mediterranean season 2

The bathroom is the only place a cast member is allowed to have privacy. As such, it's the only place onboard without cameras. But if there's more than one crew member in the bathroom at the same time, the camera crew can follow them in .

Filming continues for more than a month straight.

below deck season 3

Each season is put together from around-the-clock footage of the cast members shot over the course of six weeks .

The schedule is airtight.

below deck season 2

Other reality shows can lengthen their filming schedule to capture extra footage, but Below Deck can't extend beyond six-weeks due to the extra expense of chartering the yacht. It's up to cast members to bring the drama in the allotted time.

A charter season is longer in real life.

below deck season 1

While the schedule on Below Deck seems grueling, it's not as long as a typical charter season. Production typically books the boat for six weeks within a boat's months-long season— so it's basically a charter within a charter.

Guests really do pay for their charter.

below deck season 3

"They spend their real money to be on the show," executive producer Mark Cronin told Bravo TV . But since it may not be the most relaxing trip, guests that are featured on the reality show get a 50% discount on their charter.

The guests pay tips out of pocket, too.

below deck season 2

It's entirely up to the guests what they tip crew members. So if the crew feels slighted by a small tip, that's all real.

The charter guest's airfare is covered.

below deck sailing yacht season 1

The cost is built into production's budget, so charter guests are flown in and out courtesy of Bravo . Talk about a nice perk.

Some rooms on the boat are off-limits.

below deck season 1

There are a number of rooms devoted to production that aren't shown on camera, nor shown to guests. Production typically sets up their control room in one of the boat's staterooms, while the actual master suite is also occupied by crew, rather than guests.

No speaking to the production crew.

below deck season 1

Bravo is pretty strict with maintaining the fourth wall, and Below Deck takes this rule very seriously. While filming, cast members are not allowed to interact or even acknowledge the presence of production.

No shoes on deck.

below deck

Ever noticed the crew members walking around barefoot? There's a reason. "The crew members and guests are generally not permitted to wear shoes on board the yacht so as to prevent damaging the floors," Bravo confirms , "which explains why they don't always look the cleanest after a hard day's work."

Make time for real boating duties.

below deck season 2

Sometimes it feels like the onboard drama supersedes the duties of the crew, but it doesn't. Each crew member has been hired for their actual yachting experience, and is expected to deliver. "These are real yachties. These are people whose careers depend on this," executive producer Courtland Cox told Bravo TV .

Season 4 kicks off on  Monday, April 10 at 8/7c and is available to stream the next day on Peacock.

The Returning Below Deck Sailing Yacht Crew

In addition to Captain Glenn, there will be several familiar yachties on the vessel.  "Captain Glenn and his comeback team, Daisy Kelliher , Gary King , and Colin MacRae , resume their responsibilities aboard Parsifal III , along with new, dynamic crew members, as they set sail in Sardinia, Italy," a press release teases about the upcoming Season 4.

Find Out What the Returning Yachties Are Up To

Captain glenn shephard.

Per his BravoTV.com bio, "Originally from Montreal, Captain Glenn’s life has always been dictated by the need to see the world. Early on in his travels, he was invited onboard a 50-foot classic sailboat to work as a deckhand and was immediately hooked and has never looked back. With over 22 years in the industry and 13 years as the Captain on Parsifal III , Glenn has hosted hundreds of high-end guests over many busy charter seasons. Glenn knows how to keep his cool while catering to the uber-elite. This laid-back Captain is calm until his limits are pushed. Don’t mess with Captain Glenn!"

Daisy Kelliher, Chief Stew

"Returning chief stew Daisy Kelliher is considered a yachting legacy. Her grandfather was an Olympic sailor for Ireland in 1964, and her parents — and many aunts and uncles — were yachties," according to her BravtoTV.com bio. "Daisy has a lot to live up to when she returns to Parsifal III after a successful last two seasons and can always be counted on to give you a piece of her mind and let her hair down to have a good time."

Gary King, First Mate

"Having captained smaller boats and run the deck on several busy super yachts, Gary’s 13 years of experience is apparent in the way he runs his deck team," according to his BravoTV.com bio. "On one hand, he rules his department with an iron fist but on the other hand, he is never the type to leave a party first. He brims with mischievous charm but his flirtation gets him in hot water on and off deck."

Colin MacRae, Engineer

"Longtime sailor Colin MacRae worked as a Chief Engineer on super yachts for 15 years before joining Parsifal III for his third season. With a big heart and an impish smile, Colin is more than happy to lend a hand anywhere that he might be needed. However, when Colin’s kindness gets mistaken for weakness, fireworks fly," according to his BravoTV.com bio.

Captain Glenn Opens Up on His Relationship with “the Most Amazing Woman I Know”

Meet the new season 4 crew.

The new crew members include Chef Ileisha Dell , stews Lucy Edmunds and Mads Herrera , and deckhands Chase Lemacks and Alex Propson .

The press release notes that all the crew is trying to find their footing: "Captain Glenn realizes that his laid-back leadership style has allowed his crew to become too comfortable and starts taking charge of quality control in the interior department, much to Daisy's dismay. In the galley, Chef Ilesha's cooking impresses the guests, but her indecisiveness and co-dependency lead to time-management issues between courses, which causes her to self-destruct. On deck, strong personalities collide, and a power struggle results in a near mutiny, as Gary clashes with his new overconfident deckhand, Chase."

More on the New Crew

Chef ileisha dell.

"With over 17 years of culinary experience, Chef Ileisha has been living her dream as a yacht chef since 2014, merging her passion of cooking, traveling the world and working and living on the water. Originally from a small beach town on the east coast of Australia, she worked her way into some of Sydney’s most prestigious kitchens as a pastry chef. Chef Ileisha has taken many leaps in her career, working as a prep chef for Matt Moran for his cooking show, working as a private chef for one of Sydney’s most famous households and accompanying another family on their yachts across the Mediterranean for two years ," per Ileisha's BravoTV.com bio. " To stay in tune with her creativity, Chef Ileisha also loves photography, film, interior design, yoga and scouting for vintage glassware."

Lucy Edmunds, Stew

"Originally from Wales, Lucy shines with a bubbly personality and enthusiasm that makes her the perfect fit for the interior team," Lucy's BravoTV.com bio notes. "After feeling stuck at university during the pandemic, Lucy, who has a wide breadth of experience in the hospitality world, set sail and joined the yachting industry. Before getting her start in the Mediterranean, she worked at high-end restaurants and became a club VIP manager at only 19 years old. When she’s not chartering across the globe, Lucy enjoys a more laid-back lifestyle of playing sports and watching rugby."

Mads Herrera, Stew

According to Mads' BravoTVcom bio, "Born and raised in South Florida, Mads spent much of her time in the water and on yachts, so it was only natural she ended up in the maritime industry. With two years of experience, Mads has worked on day charters and boat deliveries and is eager for the new challenges of working on a charter yacht. A true adventurer, Mads lives life in the fast line traveling the world, riding dirt bikes, and sky diving."

Chase Lemacks, Deckhand

"A southern gentleman from South Carolina, Chase knows how to turn on the charm for the demanding guests this season. Chase originally joined the world of yachting with the dream of one day sailing around the world running charters on a sailboat of his own," per Chase's BravoTV.com bio. "Having solely worked on large motor yachts since 2019, it was an exciting challenge and welcome change of pace to come on board a sailing vessel. When he’s not on deck, he loves to get his hands dirty backpacking, hunting, and fixing up old homes."

how long is a below deck yachting season

Alex Propson, Deckhand

"Originally from Wisconsin, Alex got his jumpstart in yachting while networking in Los Angeles. He moved to South Florida and kept up his career as a deckhand since achieving his captain’s license," according to Alex's BravoTV.com bio. "The career change was influenced by the pandemic after spending eight years in sales. You can always find Alex staying active whether practicing yoga, playing basketball or diving in top destinations around the world."

Will There Be Any Boatmances?

Why, yes there is! "Two overlapping love triangles further complicate the dynamics-on board, and a shocking hookup between department heads threatens to sever Colin, Daisy, and Gary’s friendship forever," adds the press release.

Get Ready for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4 and Below Deck Down Under Season 2

Expect other boat drama in season 4 of below deck sailing yacht.

There is also plenty of other tensions to rock the boat. "With a near collision, fire, crew rebellion, gruesome guest injury, and two different potentially season-ending engine failures, this is the most captivating and unpredictable season yet of Below Deck Sailing Yacht," according to the press release.

Yacht life definitely pays.

Week after week on Below Deck , viewers see the crew clean up with giant wads of cash left behind by the charter guests as a "tip" for their work -- and chief stewardess Kate Chastain tells ET, it's not faked for reality TV.

"On a yacht of that size, [a good tip] would be $5,000 a person, for seven days of work," she reveals. "Five grand a crew member, usually. Our charters are a little bit shorter, just so we can make the show, [but] everything else is exactly the same. So, it's prorated. We usually get around $2,500, $2,000. Anything less than $1,000 would be depressing, which sounds crazy, doesn't it?"

Below Deck charters typically last two or three days, but Kate says the crew puts in the equivalent of five days of work to jam-pack the experience with a week's worth of fun.

"We're working not just eight-hour shifts, it's like, we're working pretty much around the clock," she notes. "All the days start to blur together. And during the tip meeting, Captain Lee [Rosbach], will say what we got and I'm always like, 'Is that good? I don’t know anymore… $3,000, are we happy with this?'"

To put this in perspective, those tips are on top of a fee for charting the yachts. Kate previously revealed to ET that it costs about $150,000 a week to take over the ships.

The tips come on top of a regular salary, which differs based on job. A chief stew, reportedly , earns between $62,000 and $75,000 per charter season on a Below Deck -sized yacht (most of the vessels on the show are in the 150-foot range). Second and third stews would make about $50,000 a season, a chef between $70,000 and $95,000, while a captain would earn $120,000 or more, a bosun about $52,000 and deckhands between $40,000 to $52,000.

Kate says there is one part of the tip process seen on the show that might just be for TV -- how the tip is delivered. On the show, the crew stands in line to send off the guests, with the primary charter guest handing over an envelope of cash to Captain Lee. Kate notes that the lineup is standard, but the envelope handoff isn’t.

"There's always a lineup, just 'cause it's polite," she says. "Like, even in Downton Abbey , they all line up. So, I think it's a tradition that’s been around for hundreds of years, but sometimes, I think, instead of traveling with so much cash, they wire the money."

"So, it's not as dramatic," she continues. "But I've had charters where we anchored in the British Virgin Islands, the guests had left, we're eating leftover lobster, drinking leftover champagne, counting our stacks of cash. I felt pretty special at that moment."

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.

How Much Time Off Does The Below Deck Cast Get During A Season?

Below Deck cast

Spending weeks on end on a luxury yacht might sound like a dream to some, but all that time together it can be rough seas for the cast of Below Deck . There's always some sort of drama happening, both above and below deck, that the crew is constantly a part of. And since they seemingly spend every waking hour with each other, it's no wonder that they sometimes (well, let's face it, all the time) seem to get on each other's nerves. But if you're wondering if bosuns, stews, and deckhands ever get a break, here's how much time the Below Deck cast gets during a season.

If it seems like the Below Deck cast is together a lot, well, they are. They work together, they live together, eat their meals together, and (ahem) often get drunk together (via New York Times ). Work and play seemingly mesh with each new season and cast of characters. But to understand how much time off the cast has, you first have to understand how long a charter season actually is. Unlike other reality shows that might film over many months, though, Below Deck only takes a few weeks to film (via Bravo TV ).

Here's how long the Below Deck cast really has off for

Captain Lee Rosbach of Below Deck

Why? That's how long a charter season typically lasts for (via Bustle ). With each charter lasting up to three days, the season is jam-packed with new guests looking to enjoy the luxe life of a mega yacht. So while the turnover time might be tight from one charter to the next, it would seem that the crew doesn't ever get any downtime, but not so. According to Men's Health , the cast gets a whopping three days off per season.

So what do they do during those precious days off? Do they travel and actually get to enjoy the locations that they're in, like St. Martin, Tahiti, or Phi Phi Islands? (via The Cinemaholic ). Possibly, but if they are, they aren't doing it together. When they do get some down time during those three days off, the cast stays at a hotel (not the yacht!), and are instructed to not communicate with each other. The reason: if there's any interaction (read: drama), the production crew of Below Deck wants to make sure to capture it all on camera.

And there you have it. While the Below Deck crew might get a slight breather between charters, they only get three actual days off during a typical charter season, which might last up to six weeks straight. It might make you rethink your own vacation days.

Why lack of producer interference might get below deck sailing yacht season 5 canceled (they let gary king's bad behavior slide), below deck sailing yacht season 5’s daisy kelliher has changed (is she having a breakdown).

With Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 on the horizon, Gary King may have been invited onto the crew as a producer plant. Gary debuted on the series during the show’s second season as Captain Glenn Shephard’s First Officer after Paget Berry left season 1 . After his first appearance, he earned the label of a playboy on the sailing yacht. Gary hooked up with many women during season 2 and carried this behavior into each subsequent season he’s been a part of. Fans thought his actions were creepy and problematic , though he was never fired.

After starring on Below Deck Sailing Yacht in season 4, Gary was accused of sexual misconduct by a former makeup artist who worked on the series. The allegations made headlines, though production notably didn’t fire him from the show. Even after the accusations were revealed, Gary returned for season 5 , though they weren’t the first time his behavior was questioned. The First Officer acted out numerous times across his many seasons on the show, hinting that he was brought back to the cast to act as a producer plant.

8 Gary Brought Up His Off-Screen Romance With Daisy On Camera

They vowed to keep their hook-up private.

In an attempt to cause drama on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, Gary revealed that he’d hooked up with Daisy Kelliher. The two yachties have worked alongside one another since season 2, though viewers were not aware of their romantic history with each other. When Daisy formed a boatmance with Colin Macrae, the yacht’s chief engineer, Gary grew jealous and revealed they had a past. The First Officer insisted that Daisy had feelings for him and was hooking up with Colin to get back at him while he was sleeping with Stew, Mads Herrera.

“Gary and I slept together when the season ended last year in Minorca, and we also slept together when we went to Disneyland.”

Instead of letting his friends carry on in their romantic relationship, Gary had to sabotage their connection by claiming Daisy wanted to be with him. The Chief Stew admitted she had feelings for both men but didn’t want to be “ one of [Gary’s] 10 million girlfriends ” and that he “ wouldn’t know a real connection if it slapped him in the face .” Daisy said she asked Gary to keep their hook-up to themselves away from the cameras, but he couldn’t resist creating a hectic reality TV moment. He sabotaged his friendship with Daisy for the show, which is further proof he could be a producer plant.

7 Gary Is Always Hooking Up With A New Woman Every Season

He’s had too many boatmances to count.

The First Officer has hooked up with many women during his time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht . Gary joined the crew of season 2 with a girlfriend at home but found no problem getting involved with not one but two women, Sydney Zaruba and Alli Dore, during the charter season. By the third season, he infamously hooked up with Ashley Marti and went on to flirt with Gabriela Barragan and Scarlett Bentley. During his most recent appearance on the show in season 4, he hooked up with Mads while admitting his feelings for Daisy amid her relationship with Colin. Gary may not be keen on monogamy, and that’s okay, but his behavior toward women isn’t. There were eyes on his behavior before the allegations came out, and now they’re at an all-time high.

6 Gary Inserts Himself In Drama

He’s attracted to the drama of it all.

Gary has been at the center of Below Deck Sailing Yacht ’s main conflict since season 2.

He appears to be drawn to drama and has never missed an opportunity to create conflict.

There was no need for Gary to reveal he’d hooked up with Daisy in season 4, especially if they agreed to keep their sexual past private. However, he couldn’t risk wasting the opportunity to assert his dominance and ensured the show’s main storyline centered around himself. Throughout season 4, Gary had an odd boatmance with Mads that rubbed many viewers the wrong way.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

They had an instant connection with each other and began hooking up at the beginning of the charter season. Despite their chemistry, Mads made it clear that she didn’t want a romantic relationship with the First Officer. When Gary realized she didn’t want to be his girlfriend, he blamed her and said she led him on. He got incredibly angry with her during one moment when Alex Propson said she was on her period. Gary attempted to confront Mads in front of Lucy Edmunds after he chatted with Alex and told her it was her obligation and “ common decency ” to tell him if she was having her period when he “ went down ” on her. He should have had that conversation with Mads privately but chose to embarrass her in front of other crew members because of his personal feelings.

5 Gary Doesn't Come Off As Genuine

There’s something off about his presence on the show.

There’s something about Gary that doesn’t come off as genuine. He’s portrayed as a happy-go-lucky womaneater on Below Deck , though he’s had some rough moments on the series as well. He notably gets upset on deck quite often and has been known to demean his crew. Overall, Gary’s lack of self-awareness makes him appear incredibly disingenuous.

After the sexual misconduct allegations came out, he doubled down on his actions and defended himself. Instead of defending himself, though, Gary should recognize that he hasn’t acted perfectly in the past and has shown signs of bad behavior which have led viewers to believe the allegations against him. If he showed some compassion — on and off Below Deck Sailing Yacht — it would be harder to believe he was a producer plant.

4 Gary Is The Most Talked About Cast Member

Gary has been all the talk since he was accused of sexual misconduct.

There’s no doubt Gary has emerged as the most talked about cast member from the Below Deck franchise in the past few years. Reality TV unfortunately rewards bad behavior a lot, and he’s been brought back to the show season after season because he is a controversial crew member . Even though he stirred up a lot of conflict in season 4, he was invited back for the show’s fifth season.

Gary was seemingly filming for season 5 before the accusations came out, resulting in him still being a part of the crew. However, the Rolling Stone article included a statement from Bravo and Below Deck ’s production company, 51 Minds Entertainment, proving they were made aware that the allegations were going to be publicized. The filming period for season 5 is unknown, but it's assumed Gary had finished filming the series before the article was published in August 2023.

3 Gary Likes To Stir The Pot Between Cast Members

He loves to create conflict.

Gary stirred the pot to no length in his love triangle with Daisy and Colin during season 4. There was no reason for him to break the Chief Stew’s trust and reveal they had been intimate other than to cause drama with the chief engineer. Gary’s jealousy overcame him, and he created a rough dynamic among the crew by admitting he had feelings for Daisy . He went as far as to claim she wanted him and was using Colin to get his attention. Putting his relations with Daisy aside, it wasn’t right for him to bring that information up to embarrass Colin. He was friends with everyone involved but didn’t care about their feelings when he brought that information to the cameras.

2 Gary Knows His Romantic Endeavors Are Of Interest For Viewers

He gives the viewers (and producers) what they want.

Since he joined the Below Deck universe, Gary was labeled the “Playboy” archetype. It was astonishing for him to hook up with his co-workers when he had a girlfriend in season 2. Gary enjoys attention from women and hasn’t been known to turn anyone down on the show. He invites the controversy that comes along with being the Playboy on his boats. Gary knew the viewers would be interested in his off-camera relationship with Daisy, which is likely why he brought it up on the show. He will stop at no cost to produce a shocking reality TV moment, which is another reason why he’s been a part of the Below Deck Sailing Yacht cast since season 2. Without him, the show would have had less drama over the years, which is likely in the franchise’s best interest.

1 Gary Seems Like A Different Person Off-Screen

Viewers may not know the “real gary”.

Whether Gary is a producer plant or not, he’s certainly formed a good relationship with the show. Every reality TV personality plays up for the cameras, though the First Officer takes his persona to the next level. Gary knows he’s the Playboy of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , and he plays that part to the best of his ability each season.

Viewers will likely never know what type of person he is off the show, but there’s a chance his behavior is much different off-screen than on-screen. With the news of the allegations and backlash surrounding his casting, Gary should retire from reality TV and focus on his life away from the Below Deck cameras. It would be refreshing to see a new First Officer step into his shoes and breathe new life into the spin-off.

After years of being on Below Deck Sailing Yacht , Gary could be a producer plant. His actions over the years have raised red flags with viewers and made some question his behavior. Gary will make his return to TV with season 5, though it certainly could be his last with the franchise.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres Monday, October 7 at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9 Finale Recap: Goodbye to Greece

Welcome to the  Below Deck Mediterranean  Season 9 Finale Recap! In this week’s episode, called “Happily Ever Aft,” as the season comes to a close, the crew helps set the scene for Sandy’s proposal to her girlfriend Leah. Ellie’s resentful attitude builds, but in the end, Aesha admits she’s a hard worker. The crew says goodbye and goes their separate ways, perhaps to meet again on another charter season somewhere else, and we get a snippet of Sandy and Leah’s wedding. Here are some of the highlights from Below Deck Med Season 9, Episode 17.

Ellie’s just practicing for someday when she’s a chief stew (or not)

Picking up right where we left off last week , Aesha explains to Ellie, “The job of a second [stew] is to delegate when I’m not around. If I’m on the floor, you’re not delegating.”

Ellie’s very apologetic and says she didn’t mean to overstep. She has an excuse for everything Aesha says.

“I feel like Ellie’s gaslighting me, in a way,” the chief stew says. “She’s standing there acting like she’s so unaware [of doing anything wrong].”

“At this point,” Ellie says in a confessional, “everything I do is wrong.”

“She’s so calculated,” Aesha interviews. “I don’t feel like I even truly know what Ellie is feeling.”

Ellie justifies her behavior by saying she’s just trying to do a good job so that someday Aesha can write a reference for her, saying she’d be a good chief stew. Fat chance! Aesha trying to get through to Ellie is like talking to a wall.

Chef Jono joins in the fun with the toga party

The theme for the night is Greek togas and sandals. All the guests and much of the crew are dressed up, and everybody looks fabulous.

Aesha hired drag queens, and the guests are delighted to see them at the party on the sundeck after dinner. The drag queens are gorgeous, and one of them introduces herself as the “Duchess of Greece.” Who knew there was even such a person?

While the party is going on, Ellie is cleaning up the table decorations from dinner. Finished in the pantry, Carrie comes out and says, “Let me help you.”

Ellie’s not very gracious about it, mumbling, “Mmm. All right.”

When the group is done dancing, they want shots. Aesha asks Ellie about lemon drop shots.

“I was not told anything about shots,” Ellie whimpers.

“Don’t be so defensive,” Aesha responds. “I just said, ‘Does it take long to make Lemon Drop shots?’”

“I’m not getting defensive,” Ellie says defensively.

When Ellie serves the shots, one of the guests comments, “That’s the clearest Lemon Drop shot I’ve ever seen!” Me, too. Aren’t Lemon Drops supposed to be yellow?

When they taste the shots, one guest says, “That’s just vodka with a lemon.” Ugh. Doesn’t Ellie know how to make a Lemon Drop? I’ll bet Carrie does.

Aesha runs into Jono in the pantry after he’s changed into his toga. “You look so good!” she tells him.

“Having this group of queer guests come on board is really special for me,” Jono interviews. “This is the most involved I’ve been all season … I’ve kind of pacified myself a bit. I wish I was that involved with every charter.”

Ellie’s resentment toward Carrie “snowballs”

At the bar, the guests ask Carrie if she could sleep with anyone on board, who would it be, “And don’t say Captain Sandy!” Carrie confides that she would choose Joe, which pisses Ellie off.

“At this point, the snowball just keeps getting bigger,” Ellie interviews. “Carrie’s rubbing this whole Joe thing in my face, she’s taking over my job, [and] just acting like Regina George … I just hope I’m able to get through it [without blowing] a gasket.”

The last day of the charter season

Bri is ecstatic that she made it through an entire charter season. “That’s never happened before!” she says.

Reflecting on her brief fling with Joe, she admits, “It was a classic f*ck up … But short-term love is better than no love at all.”

As they head back to the dock, Sandy calls her girlfriend Leah and says she’ll text her directions when they get there. She’s proposing today and getting more and more nervous every minute.

“Leah thinks we’re going on a European vacation,” Sandy says. “I don’t think Leah has a clue at all. ‘You’re never gonna ask me to marry you!’ She says that all the time.”

As the crew gets ready for docking, Iain says, “This is our final chance to get some ‘Big Deck Energy.’” Cute, Iain. Clever.

As they pull into the dock, Leah is standing there waving at them. “Holy sh*t!” Sandy says. “This is the biggest day of my life.”

As soon as the boat’s tied up, Sandy says, “I’ll be right back,” and she runs down the gangway to give Leah a big hug and a kiss.

“The guests are still on board,” she admits. “That’s not very professional of me.” But I think we can all give her a pass.

Ellie throws a pity party for herself

Once the guests are gone, attention turns to Sandy’s proposal. Aesha asks Gael to come with her to set up. Of course, Ellie adds this to her pile of grievances.

“I’m definitely feeling down,” she interviews. “Aesha didn’t pick me to participate in Captain Sandy’s engagement, which would have been such an honor for me. I feel like all this work I’ve done this entire freaking season is for nothing.” Um, you made $16k in tips, Ellie. Get a grip.

“Sandy wants to propose … at sunset,” says Aesha. “So we’re literally racing against the sun. Joe, Gael, Carrie, they all work so fast. I can rely on them to do the job and do it quickly.”

In the van on the way to the proposal, Ellie’s still going on about not being included in the setup. “Dude, if they’ve done décor without me, I am going to flip out,” she says. “I’ve been crushing it this entire season, and then [Aesha’s] like, ‘All right, great. Carrie’s here. Now f*ck off to the pantry. Go do dishes’ … She was hired … to help us out, not come here and replace us.”

In the back seat, Iain and Nathan exchange surprised looks. “Just because Carrie’s come in there and took the attention away from you,” Nathan says in a confessional, “you’re being bitter … and spiteful. Not everything’s about you, Ellie.” My thoughts exactly.

Even though she sympathizes, Bri also thinks Ellie should just “f*cking get over it.”

Joe backs over a line and almost scuttles the plan

Meanwhile, Joe is picking up Sandy and Leah in the tender to take them to the proposal site. Unfortunately, he accidentally backs over a line, which gets tangled in the prop. Ugh!

“This is a massive f*ckup,” Joe interviews. “Have I just ruined Captain’s day?”

When Sandy has him lift the engines, she sees that he’s snagged not just one line but two. This could be catastrophic.

Fortunately, Sandy’s very understanding. “Joe, it’s not your fault,” she tells him. “There are lines everywhere.”

But Sandy’s nerves just shot to a new level. The sun sets in 30 minutes, and Joe has to cut both props free before they can go. Otherwise, Sandy will be proposing in the dark.

Finally, Joe cuts them free, and they’re off. Arriving at the beach, the violins are playing a wedding song, which isn’t part of the plan. But Sandy’s just glad they got there before sunset.

The proposal goes off without a hitch, and of course, Leah says yes. They’re engaged!

Once the proposal is over, the crew piles back into the taxis to go to dinner. In the back of their van, Nathan tells Aesha that Ellie was “chattin’ sh*t” about her on the way over.

He repeats that she said, “Basically, as soon as Carrie arrived, all her hard work went unnoticed. That pissed me off. You’re the best girl in the world.”

“It’s very juvenile to bitch to the boat about how I’ve been treating her so poorly,” Aesha interviews. “If she wants to be a chief stew, she has got a LOT of growing to do.”

Too much alcohol spoils Carrie’s plans with Joe

The sexual tension between Carrie and Joe is building. Joe admits he’s “smitten,” while Carrie has “curiosity about Joe.”

“It’s probably going to ruin whatever friendship me and Ellie have,” Carrie admits. I wouldn’t worry about that, Carrie. I don’t think Ellie’s got any friends.

On the way to dinner, Joe and Carrie start flirting, whispering to each other, and stealing kisses right in front of Bri, who gets triggered. She previously asked Joe not to flirt in front of her and make her feel “dumb,” but he’s having too much fun.

“I completely understand that Bri’s upset,” Joe says. “She doesn’t want me to flirt in front of her in the taxi. [But] I’m having a great time with Carrie. We’ve just finished a season, baby. I’m sendin’ it tonight!”

Joe tells Carrie he wants to “f*ck [her] so bad,” but as romantic and touching as that sentiment is, by the time they get back to the boat, he can barely even stand up. Carrie is not far behind. Sexy time is not happening tonight.

“I just want to f*ckin’ die alone,” Joe tells Carrie when she finds him hiding in his bathroom. Alcohol: it’s a double-edged sword. So much fun till it’s just not anymore.

“Joe sure knows how to woo a lady,” Carrie jokes. “Good night, big guy. Sleep it off.”

Goodbye to Season 9

The next morning, Captain Sandy comes in and wakes up Aesha and Gael. She tells them, “Go wake the rest up really loudly.” Oh, that’s just cruel.

This is the part that always makes me sad. After living and working together for nine weeks, now they all have to say goodbye and go their separate ways. Except for Nathan and Gael, who are in lurve and, hopefully, will travel and have some fun for a bit.

“I have a woman that’s willing to accept these [stinky] feet of mine,” Nathan says. “She is a keeper, for sure!”

Saying goodbye to Ellie, Aesha says, “We’ve had our differences, but I will never take away from you that you’re a very hard worker … You should be very proud of yourself.”

Fast forward eight months later to Sandy and Leah’s wedding. Everyone’s gathered in Fort Lauderdale. Aesha’s there, Kate Chastain is there, and even Norma from Yacht Crew Placement is there. Chef Dave White is catering. It’s perfect.

“Every charter season teaches me something different,” Sandy interviews. “This one reminded me, in yachting and in life … it’s all about the things that you’re passionate about and embracing them as tight as you can.”

“Whether it’s on land or on a boat,” she adds, “I’m gonna spend the rest of my life loving Leah.”

The Bosun is one of the most important and prominent positions on Below Deck . No matter the franchise, the Bosun is often seen leading the deck team , working with the captain, and proving why they are integral to the yacht. This season on Below Deck Mediterranean , Bosun Iain Maclean seems to be completely MIA. It's not that he's been edited out of the show for misconduct, he just seems to be an unimportant player in the season's storytelling.

Below Deck Med is one of the successful spinoff shows of the flagship series. Now in its 9th season, Below Deck Mediterranean brings stunning locales alongside high-octane drama through the lives of the yachties who work on board. This season, Mustique is traveling through the beautiful seas of Greece. As the charter season is about to end, will Maclean be there to clink champagne at the end?

Iain Maclean Started Off in Hot Water

When Season 9 of Below Deck Mediterranean began, Captain Sandy Yawn had a brand-new crew, with one old friend returning after a few years away. Despite having Aesha Scott as a stew previously, it was her first time having her in a managerial position. For Captain Sandy, it was a new character season with new heads of departments. Leading the exterior was Maclean. He seemed like a decent guy. The South African yachtie had experience. About five years in the industry. At least, based on being appointed as Bosun, one would think that Maclean was the best fit for the position. But as the charter season got underway, fans were convinced that the Bosun would be the first to get the axe from Captain Sandy.

Early on in the season, Captain Sandy Yawn felt strongly that Maclean was a bit lazy. His team, comprised of Joe Bradley, Nathan Gallagher , and Gael Cameron , continually called out his missteps. He had been ridiculed for his poor communication skills. He even nearly left character guests and a crew member out at sea. Between himself and Chef Jono Shillingford , some fans expected an early season departure, but with Captain Sandy trying to have a perfect season, both men stayed on board. When it came to action on deck, Maclean's biggest decision of the season came when he appointed Joe Bradley as Lead Deckhand. And Joe, well, he seems to be doing a much better job than his superior. And from there, Maclean has been scarcely seen on camera. While Maclean may be perceived as lazy in the eyes of Captain Sandy and his team, the reality is that nothing insanely wrong has happened. At least that made it onto camera. So is it possible Maclean's just doing his job? Is that the worst thing?

Iain Mclean Doesn't Provide Typical Reality TV Drama

Much of this season's action has focused on the dueling relationship drama. On the deck, Nathan Gallagher and Gael Cameron have fostered a special relationship. Though Gael has let go of her long-distance boyfriend for her coworker, it's been a key source of action. It's been a lovey-dovey story, despite the heartbreak Gael has caused the voice-only ex. Then there is the feud between Elena Dubaich and Bri Muller . The two stews have had a rivalry, not only trying to prove they are the best stew on board but also trying to win over the heart of Joe Bradley, who's been playing them against one another. Now, with a fourth stew in the mix, Carrie O'Neill , joined the fray which has complicated the ever-expanding love triangle, as Joe likes new things. So where does Maclean fit in this season? Captain Sandy is her own entity. Chief Stew Aesha Scott is not looking for love. Chef Jono has a yacht boyfriend. When it comes to reality television drama, Maclean's just not providing — he's just too real .

Finally, in the penultimate episode, Maclean finally got to go out on land and help lead an excursion. As he said in confessional, "In my role, I'm more behind the scenes making everything run. I've always been like the entertainment person." Naturally, Maclean got to play tour guide of the Temple of Poseidon. He knew the facts of the landmark. He dropped them like they were hot. And that was his shining moment. A complete blip in the bigger scheme of the season.

‘Below Deck: Mediterranean’ Star Needs a Serious Reality Check

Moving up is easier said than done.

Just an episode before, one of his rare appearances on screen was via confessional where he stated the obvious: “Docking at nighttime is different from docking during the day. Because it’s nighttime.” It was a funny moment, but is that what Maclean will be remembered for when the season comes to a close? Maybe communication is one of his weak points. Whether producers were giving him a bad edit or simply editing him out of the season, Maclean's presence is nearly non-existent. Perhaps he is actually doing such a great job as Boson that there’s simply nothing to show! But, based on earlier episodes, that seems unlikely. Interestingly, his Instagram makes no mention of his participation in the show .

Is Maclean a Bad Manager — or Is It a Bad 'Below Deck' Edit?

With a plethora of opinions, ranging from supportive fans to seasoned veterans of the franchise, Maclean’s time on Below Deck Mediterranean has been polarizing, to say the least. When it comes to former Below Deck Chief Stew Kate Chastain , her early assessment of Maclean’s managerial skills seemed to be right on point. On the Below Deck Mediterranean After Show , she alluded to his ineptitude as a manager. She should know what works having six seasons on the flagship show under her belt. Via social media , fans have rallied around Maclean with comments like “Pretty sure they're giving you a bad edit on BD my good man. The Captain is lucky to have you as Bosun.”

With just a simple “thank you” as a response, Maclean isn’t denying his visibility is a problem this season, he’s also not disagreeing with the statement. With the finale coming up, it appears that Captain Sandy will have a “perfect” season. She will have ended the season with the same crew she started off with. Maclean should be thrilled he didn’t get the cut when the early season red flags were raised. Nevertheless, he is one of the least-seen Bosons in the history of the franchise and seems like a nice chap. It's a shame that he wasn't a part of the narrative of the season.

Below Deck Mediterranean airs new episodes every Monday at 9:00 pm EST on Bravo. All episodes are available to stream on Peacock .

Gary King defends Below Deck Sailing Yacht return amid backlash after sexual misconduct claims

Gary King on Watch What Happens Live

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 has been plagued with controversy ever since Gary King was accused of sexual misconduct with a production team member.

The claims came out last summer after Gary had already filmed Season 5 of the hit sailing show.

It’s been months of fans waiting for Season 5 news, which happened this week thanks to a trailer that included a premiere date.

As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans had mixed reviews on Gary’s return amid the scandal.

Gary, though, has set the record straight and defended his fourth stint in the Below Deck franchise.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht star Gary King defends his return amid backlash after sexual misconduct scandal

After news broke that Gary, along with Daisy Kelliher and Captain Glenn Shephard , were back for another season, they all began posting on social media.

Gary shared his new official cast photo and a caption to promote his return.

“Well I guess the news is out. It’s what you’ve all been waiting for 🤗 I’m back! Who’s excited for this season? Season five of #belowdecksailing Yacht premieres on Monday, Oct. 7 on @bravotv,” he wrote as the caption.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gary King (@king_gk)

It didn’t take long for the comments section to become flooded with responses, most of which were people psyched to have Gary back.

One comment brought up the allegations, writing, “Umm, so what about the claims of sexual assault by the production crew member…?”

Soon, Gary, who often replies to responses on his IG posts, whether they are good or bad, had something to say on the topic of the allegations against him.

“mate, there’s people that claim the earth is flat, this girl wanted 15minutes of fame and made a complete lie. End of story,” Gary replied.

Gary on the defense

Under the exchange, another critic came out to say they hoped Gary wasn’t lying about the scandal or what happened.

Gary got right to the point with his response, saying, “I don’t lie.”

Gary claps back at troll

This isn’t the first time Gary has shared that the allegations against him were false. Gary recently shared an update on the situation , claiming his accuser was a liar, and it was proven.

There’s been no official word from Bravo or 51 Minds, the production company behind Below Deck Sailing Yacht, regarding the investigation into the allegations against Gary.

Along with defending his return, Gary briefly dropped hints about the upcoming season.

Gary King teases Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5

One fan who was happy to have Gary back suggested that the first officer keep his pants on this season. Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans know Gary has a tendency to hook up with anyone who looks slightly in his direction.

Gary declared he was, but we will have to see if that really is the case. Let’s be honest, it’s hard to believe Gary will be a good boy.

Gary promises to be good

Another user admitted they were bummed that Colin MacRae isn’t back breaking up the trio of Gary, Colin, and Daisy that helped make the sailing show a mega-hit.

“would have loved the trio back but I can assure this season will still be entertaining,” Gary wrote.

Gary teases BDS Season 5

The wait is almost over for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5. Gary King has defended his return and it definitely won’t be the last time that happens.

Based on the trailer there’s going to be plenty for fans to talk about when Below Deck Sailing Yacht is back with Gary being just a small part of the drama coming.

Are you ready for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season to be back on Bravo airwaves?

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premieres on Monday, October 7 at 9/8c on Bravo.

I’m not watching!!! He’s a sexual predator with bad hair that he thinks is beautiful!!! Bravo just dismissed that woman’s feelings and believed him over her!!! Until that woman comes forth and says she made the whole thing up, I support her complaint! Did anyone watch this sexual predator on Project Runway? Shoveling shots of tequila for her to drink. Isn’t that what the Bosun did on Jason’s yacht? Get them drunk and take advantage? He does not belong on TV!!! He’s a POS!!!

Ruth

Looking forward to the new season. I’m sorry Colin isn’t returning. Hopefully in a future season we will see him again

Below Deck Sailing Yacht’s Daisy Kelliher Is Freezing Her Eggs: ‘Took My Future Into My Control’

Below Deck Sailing Yachts Daisy Kelliher Is Freezing Her Eggs Took My Future Into My Control

Below Deck Sailing Yacht ‘s Daisy Kelliher is opening up about the challenges that come with freezing her eggs.

“It’s been just over a week since I did my second round of egg freezing with @apricity_fertility and thought I would give a round up of my experience as best I could here,” Kelliher, 37, wrote via Instagram on Tuesday, September 24. “I was lucky as this was my second time doing this so I went in quite prepared.”

The reality star reflected on how the two experiences compared , adding, “Physically throughout the process my main physical symptoms were bloating, tiredness and very hungry (all of which are gone now). I personally found the injections fine, the biggest issue with me is the time frame in the evening. I chose 8pm but with my schedule I found this hard to be consistent with.”

Kelliher was initially concerned about her results , revealing that she had an idea of what she wanted out of the procedure.

“Going into this I had 5 follicles and three smaller ones. So the aim was to get five eggs. When I came out I was told there were six follicles and a few smaller ones but the doctor could only get three,” she shared. “We aren’t sure why this happened and why she couldn’t get the egg from three follicles.”

Kelliher was “pretty upset” that she didn’t get as many eggs as she hoped, writing, “To have an expectation and to not reach that expectation was obviously very disappointing, for me personally physically it’s fine but mentally I find the whole thing so draining, Nine months ago I got 10 eggs and now three it creates intrusive thoughts in your head.”

In a follow-up post, Kelliher said she was “ feeling so much better ” after taking time to reflect.

“I took my future into my control and I have 13 frozen eggs to use if I wish to do so in the future. This doesn’t guarantee a baby but guarantees I did what I could for when the time is right,” she concluded. “I’m so glad I shared this journey for women who felt alone, for women looking for information but also for me, I did not realise how many women and people I knew who were doing the same thing. … My thoughts are with anyone going through any fertility experience at the moment, in the past or in the future, and thank you to everyone for the overwhelming love and support throughout my experience.”

Bravo viewers have gotten invested in Kelliher’s personal life since she joined Below Deck Sailing Yacht in 2021. The most recent season of the show followed Kelliher’s romance with Colin MacRae , which was complicated by her flirty relationship with Gary King.

While trying to address their issues during the July 2023 reunion, MacRae and King ultimately said they weren’t ruling out a reconciliation with each other but hinted that their respective relationships with Kelliher were up in the air. (Kelliher and King have since returned to film season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , but MacRae was not featured in the trailer .)

“I am sorry for being emotional. That is what you get for putting your heart on the line. I love them both and they taught me so much about myself,” Kelliher said at the end of the reunion. “I have regrets. But more importantly, I know I have a good heart and my intentions were good. Onwards and upwards.”

Kelliher later admitted to Us Weekly that she still had questions about how she was spoken to at the reunion.

“It obviously was an emotional and raw kind of ending to those relationships. We’ve kind of left it at that and no hard feelings,” she added. “But I think something like the reunion would take a lot of time to come back from. Things were said and you can’t unfortunately take back those things.”
