Inside Magic Johnson’s Six-Week Yacht Voyage: Former NBA Champion Spent a Reported $7.5 Million for the Experience with Family and Friends

Former NBA player Magic Johnson works hard and plays hard. Just a few months before reaching billionaire status, Johnson spent six weeks on a yacht vacation with his wife, Cookie, hosting their friends and family along the way.  

While the voyage was in August, photos of the vacay recently resurfaced. Johnson and his guests stayed aboard the Phoenix 2. The luxury yacht’s charter prices were just under $1.25 million weekly, according to the company website. And for Johnson’s six week journey, it is estimated that he spent $7.5 million.  

Johnson, who has a reported net worth of $1.2 billion, traveled throughout the Mediterranean. Johnson and Cookie began their adventures in Antibes, France, before heading to Italy to visit towns such as Portoffino, Capriccioli, Capri, Positano, Nerano, and Sicily; the Corinth Canal, Mykonos, Oia, Kefalonia, Kalami and Santorini in Greece; and Montenegro before ending the journey in Dubrovnik, Croatia. In total, Johnson was able to visit five countries with 18 members of his inner circle. 

During the trip, Johnson participated in day excursions, staying in San Dominici Palace in Taormina and the Four Seasons hotel in Sicily. And while the nightly charge for these hotel stays were upwards of $1700, it is no comparison to the cost of renting a luxury yacht for six weeks. 

Life on the Yacht 

The seven-cabin yacht includes the primary cabin, which is a split-level apartment. Panoramic views of the ocean coupled with a private terrace are connected by a private stairwell. The yacht’s other cabins are situated on three decks of the ship and are accessible by elevator. 

There’s also three swimming pools, several jacuzzis, a fitness room and wellness center, an indoor and outdoor movie theater, a bar and even a hair salon. 

The yacht also comes ready with a 29-member crew ready to support the needs of guests. 

Johnson’s Experience 

Johnson and Cookie began their journey with some of the former Laker’s celebrity friends. Voyagers included Michael Jordan, Judge Mathis and Samuel L. Jackson and their respective spouses. 

“Tonight we enjoyed an incredible dinner at the world-famous Da Paolino Ristorante aka the lemon tree restaurant in Capri, Italy!” Johnson shared on Instagram.  “AND I got to hang out with my great friend and the greatest basketball player to ever live, Michael Jordan, and his wife Yvette, Sam and LaTanya Jackson, Judge Greg and Linda Mathis, and John and Vicki Palmer.”

Crew members made the journey memorable with food and entertainment related to the Mediterranean. 

On one evening, for instance, Johnson and his guests participated in a masquerade party. While in Greece, they experienced a “Greek God and Goddess Extravaganza.” 

Once Johnson’s friends left, his children and grandchildren joined the trip in Italy. 

”Cookie and I are excited to have our kids Andre, EJ, Elisa, our daughter-in-law Lisa and grandkids Gigi and Avery join us on the yacht!” Johnson posted on Instagram.

Magic Johnson and I met at Morgan State University at the Julius Serving Basketball. He is a great person who made an impact in my life He has worked hard to get where he is for himself and his family. Therefore, it is not in good taste to question the way he spends his money with his friends and family.

Magic and his beautiful wife deserve to vacation with their family and friends and that’s the bottom line. None of know the hard work it took for him to live this way. He’s an amazing philanthropist that empowers others to live their best lives. What he’s done after basketball is as amazing as what he did playing basketball

The principal owner was heavily involved in the boat’s design. Though he passed away a few years after taking delivery in May 2010, the yacht has remained in the family. Phoenix 2 was his second Winch-designed yacht, but his first new build.

The former, also named Phoenix , was penned for a different owner who had requested a Parisian art-deco theme. Phoenix 2 was the boat that he wanted to build, and New York was his art-deco city of choice.

“The owner was a powerful businessman and very proud of it,” says Dixon. “He wanted Phoenix 2 to reference the boom time of 1920s New York—the art-deco architecture and that period of industrialization. It was much stronger in character than his previous yacht.”

In a subtle nod to the Big Apple, the external side decks are large enough for two people to comfortably walk abreast, and the New York skyline is outlined in polished stainless-steel on the upper deck bar stools. A more overt example of the theme is the plated stainless-steel Phoenix sculpture on the bow, which is a direct representation of the eagles on the Chrysler building.

“The owner wanted his yacht to be longer than his friend’s, so we welded and bolted on a 16-foot phoenix figurehead on the bow,” Andrew Winch told Robb Report . “It’s absolutely enormous, weighs 5.5 tons and gave the owner the extra 16 feet he was looking for.”

The interior keeps to four main colors—black, cream, gold and burgundy—with high-gloss macassar wood and gold leaf used to reflect 1920s glamor.

Adjacent is a round room with a reinforced floor where a custom black-and-gold Steinway piano sits. Designed as a one-off, it has a phoenix emblazoned on its side and took two years to build. The crew of 28 include a pianist and guitarist, as well as a massage therapist and chocolatier.

“The owner was a consummate host and Phoenix 2 was all about dining, music and entertainment,” says Winch. “He liked to think that his dinner guests became the orchestra, while he was seated at the head as the conductor.”

The yacht also has a spa, gym and hammam for relaxation. A wine cellar is stocked with the finest Italian and Bordeaux wines. The owner’s love of art is evident in the yacht’s prized collection, including a Modigliani in one of the guest suites.

The art-deco theme continues in the lower-deck cinema. On the top deck is a second outdoor cinema and a swimming pool with portholes in the floor to allow natural light to fill the staterooms below. The forward master suite is spread across two levels.

On the main deck is the bedroom, dressing room and ensuite, with another elaborate mural and a vanity table with refrigerated cosmetic drawers. A private spiral staircase leads to the owner’s deck with an observation lounge and office where a desk made from high gloss macassar and mother of pearl inlay takes pride of place.

“The owner felt the panoramic views would be wasted on a master bedroom where he wouldn’t spend as much time,” says Dixon. “A private lounge gives him another level of privacy and is the room the family enjoy spending time in the most.”

One of the few changes made since the original design is an extension to the swim platform. Though the principal didn’t live to enjoy his yacht for as long as hoped, his family has cruised Europe and the Caribbean. “The yacht crosses the Atlantic every year,” Captain Ian Howcroft told Robb Report .

For sale for $134 million with yacht broker Burgess, Phoenix 2 is ready to rise from the ashes and give a modern Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan a chance to foxtrot around the high seas.

Inside the $1.2 Million-a-Week Superyacht Magic Johnson Chartered for His Summer Vacation

When you’re Magic Johnson, a simple European getaway just won’t do. You have to take in the continent by boat.

The NBA legend and entrepreneur is currently enjoying some time cruising around the Mediterranean onboard the Aquila , a 281-foot superyacht . And the Lakers great and his wife Cookie have invited along a star-studded group of pals, including Samuel L. Jackson and LL Cool J, to join in on the experience.

Magic, who TMZ says likes to spend a month across the Atlantic each summer, has gone all out for his latest vacation. The Aquila is the largest boat built in the US since the 1930s, according to its Burgess charter listing . Originally developed by Derektor in 2010, the vessel sailed under the name Cakewalk until it was sold and completely refitted in 2016. The renewed, four-deck yacht has even more space from which its passengers can gaze upon cities like Corfu, Capri and Cervo, and is perfect for entertaining a one very large man and his family and friends.

The yacht has a massive owner’s suite with a massage room, salon and private deck that overlooks the bow, along with six other spacious guest suites. There’s also a cinema room, gym, two more massage rooms. When it comes time for entertaining, there’s a saloon called the London Bar, a beach club at sea level and a dedicated party deck with its own DJ booth, AV system and smoke machine. The interior’s pièce de résistance, though, is a 36-foot “waterfall” chandelier that stretches from the sun deck to the lower deck.

Other amenities on the Aquila include a limousine tender, a deck jacuzzi, aquapark, trampoline and all the water toys you could ever want (think: jet skis, kayaks and wakeboards). The yacht, which has a 50-foot beam, is also manned by a crew of 28. It’s powered by two 3,306 hp MTU engine and has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots.

As you may have guessed, a boat like this doesn’t come cheap. The superyacht is reportedly worth over $150 million . Johnson is only chartering the vessel, but even that will set him back nearly €1 million (or about $1.2 million) a week, according to the listing. One thing is clear: No. 32 loves spending time on the Aquila . In fact, this isn’t his first time he’s rented the vessel. He also took it out on vacation back in 2019, according to TMZ . And honestly, who can blame him?

Magic, Cookie Johnson Say Goodbye To Their Guests, Enjoy Last Leg Of Euro Yacht Trip Alone

M agic, 64, recently shared that all of the couples have disembarked, which means the long-time couple can now spend quality time vacationing alone. 

“It’s officially just Cookie and I on the yacht! The Phoenix 2 crew arranged a stunning sunset dinner for two at an anchorage in Croatia tonight 🌅” Johnson wrote in a caption under images of himself and Cookie gazing at a stunning sunset and having dinner on the water.

The former Lakers legend continues to keep social media users updated on their adventures and entertained. On August 7, he shared their next location, with the couple and the crew trekking to Northeastern Italy. 

“We had a marvelous day today in the beautiful Venice, Italy!” the caption read. The NBA Hall of Famer also shared a video that captured a birds-eye view of the beautiful city, which he took with a drone. 

This year, the couple had John and Vicki Palmer, Samuel and LaTanya Jackson, Holly Robinson Peete and her husband Rodney Peete, and Cedric the Entertainer and wife Lorna join them in Europe for delectable food, remarkable views, and couple's fun. Some of the places they visited include Croatia (they explored Old Town Dubrovnik, where Game of Thrones was filmed), Spain, Montenegro, and Nerano, Italy, where they ran into Jeff Bezos. 

During the recent trip, the couples also had fun parties on the yacht, including an '80s and Harlem Nights-themed soiree. All the couples dressed up to match the themes, and they seemed to have a blast.  

Magic and Cookie couldn’t do their annual trip without family too, so they spent quality time with their kids during their vacation. The couple have three children, which include son Andre, who Johnson has from a previous relationship, as well as son EJ and daughter Elisa. Their grandkids were present as well. 

“This family time has been incredible for Cookie and me! We’ve cherished every moment together, creating memories that will remain close to our hearts,” Magic wrote in a caption on Instagram.

"Our children continue to amaze us with their personal growth and career achievements and we couldn’t be prouder of our wonderful grandchildren, Gigi and Avery, who are excelling in both academics and sports! As we grow older, every moment spent together becomes more precious. We are truly grateful to have children and grandchildren who still enjoy spending time with us!”

Previous pairs the couple has traveled with include Judge Greg Mathis and his wife, Linda, Michael Jordan and his wife, Yvette Prieto, and LL Cool J and Simone Smith . Now, Magic and Cookie are getting to enjoy quality time alone.

Magic Johnson 's annual yacht vacation has somehow gotten even MORE lavish ... Samuel L. Jackson just revealed the boat trip now features acupuncture sessions!!!

Johnson, Jackson and a few of their close pals set sale yet again for their yearly European vacay earlier this month -- hitting the French Riviera this time -- and the "Pulp Fiction" star showed there's truly no expense spared on the getaway.

In photos that Jackson posted to his Instagram page Thursday morning ... you can see he got healing needles injected into his skin -- all while he was relaxing and soaking in rays on one of the boat's decks.

Samuel clearly knew the moment was one dripping with luxury -- 'cause he captioned one of the pics with the words, "Accu in da Sun!!"

"DAAYUUUM!!!!" he added.

The treatments didn't stop there, though ... he also got some cupping therapy done right on a lounge chair as well!!

Of course, the extravagant amenities shouldn't surprise anybody ... Johnson's been going all out for the summer trip for nearly a decade.

This year's yacht is called "Phoenix 2" ... and the 296-footer comes with all of the expected bells and whistles -- including jacuzzis, a gym, an outdoor cinema, a swimming pool, and so much more.

Jackson's clearly been in awe of it -- and for good reason ... its price tag to rent for just one week is about $1.2 MILLION!!

Magic Johnson Kicks Off Annual Star-Studded Couples Yacht Trip Through Europe

Nobody does a couples trip like NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. Every year, Johnson and his wife Cookie host a trip around Europe via yacht with some of their favorite people, many of whom are public figures. The couple kickstarted their latest tour in Barcelona.

“We are officially on vacation!! 😁,” the 64-year-old said as the caption to photos with a few of the other couples in their finest threads and a few shots of them enjoying fine dining. “Hanging out with our great friends John and Vicki Palmer and Sam and LaTanya Jackson at Boca Grande in Barcelona, Spain! The food was *chef’s kiss*” he wrote.

After visiting Barcelona, the couples’ next stop on the summer tour was the party city of Ibiza. They indulged in seafood and enjoyed some serene views from the yacht and were joined by another star couple, Cedric the Entertainer and his wife , Lorna.

“Today Cookie and I enjoyed a beautiful day in Ibiza, Spain,” he wrote. “We had a wonderful lunch at Juan Y Andrea Formentera with our friends John and Vicki Palmer, Sam and LaTanya Jackson, and Cedric the Entertainer and his wife Lorna. In 2023 , the Johnsons toured Europe and had quite a few celebrity friends come along for that trip. In addition to Samuel L. Jackson and his wife, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, and Vicki and John Palmer, they spent time with Judge Greg Mathis and his wife, Linda Mathis, as well as Michael Jordan and his wife, Yvette Prieto. Johnson also had his kids join the trip last year, including Andre and his wife Lisa, his son EJ and daughter Elisa, and their grandchildren Gigi and Avery.

Some highlights of the trips usually include top-tier meals from a private chef and Fourth of July celebrations. We look forward to seeing where the couples land next and living vicariously through them!

Magic Johnson Spends Fourth of July on Epic Yacht Vacation in Spain with Wife Cookie and Famous Friends

The NBA legend's Instagram dispatches also feature his traveling companions: LaTanya and Samuel L. Jackson, and Cedric the Entertainer and Lorna Wells

Earvin " Magic" Johnson 's summer yacht adventure is sailing on!

Magic, 64, and his wife Earlitha "Cookie" Johnson , 65, have shared several updates on their annual Mediterranean vacation via Instagram, many of which feature their friends and traveling companions LaTanya and Samuel L. Jackson ; John and Vicki Palmer; and Cedric the Entertainer and Lorna Wells.

On Saturday, July 6, the NBA legend shared an Instagram post of himself posing in front of a glorious sunset from the boat while in Spain. "Look at the amazing sunrise I got to enjoy at 6 am this morning before my workout in Spain," he wrote in the caption. 

Magic wore casual attire in the photo, which showed him leaning against a couch on the yacht's deck. He opted for a gray and blue Los Angeles Baseball T-shirt with matching blue pants. 

That same day, he shared a collaborative post with his wife of over 30 years that showcased the group’s visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma in Mallorca, Spain. 

“Today, we had an amazing day exploring in Palma de Mallorca, Spain with our friends! We visited one of the largest Mediterranean Gothic churches in Spain that took over 400 years to build," the Believing in Magic author wrote in the caption.

Cookie went on to praise the church for its "beautiful" stained-glass windows. "I definitely recommend a visit if you’re in Spain, we were all in awe," Cookie added. 

The carousel showed Magic and Cookie embracing one another while sitting outside, a group snap inside of the cathedral, and videos and photos of the landmark's interior as they explored.

In a post from Friday, July 5, the athlete gave insight into how he spent the Fourth of July holiday while traveling. “A great day celebrating the Fourth of July with our friends overseas," he wrote in a caption.

In the first photo of the post, the Johnsons were smiling as they posed with the Palmers and Jacksons, all of whom were dressed for the holiday. The inside of the boat was adorned with red, white and blue balloons, along with other themed decor.

The crew chimed in on the celebration as Magic posted a video of them dancing with American flags as the friend group cheered along. The festivities also included a donut wall with themed desserts. 

That same day, Magic shared a video of himself having a "magical start" to his morning by "cutting loose" on a jet ski. At the start of the clip, he raises his hand to wave at the camera.

The group kicked off their summer vacation on July 1 with the basketball player announcing their trip via an Instagram post with the caption: "We are officially on vacation!! 😁 Hanging out with our great friends John and Vicki Palmer and Sam and LaTanya Jackson at Boca Grande in Barcelona, Spain! The food was *chef’s kiss*."

The following day, Magic shared videos to his Instagram Stories of their views of the Spanish island of Ibiza from the yacht.

While visiting the Mediterranean destination, the group dressed up to dine at the "farm-to-table" Can Palau De Dalt restaurant, located in the Casa Maca Hotel.

In the same post, Magic shared a photo of the six of them standing on a staircase on the boat with a view of its grand entrance.

Last year, the Johnsons had their luxurious six-week vacation on the same yacht – identified as the Phoenix 2 superyacht . They began their journey in Antibes, France before making their way around the Mediterranean including stops in Portofino, Capriccioli, Capri, Positano, Nerano and Sicily in Italy ; the Corinth Canal, Mykonos, Oia, Kefalonia, Kalami and Santorini in Greece ; Montenegro; and Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The luxury yacht has offered charter prices that start at €1,200,000 per week, or roughly $1,299,770, per week, according to its website .

Included in the price of the seven-cabin superyacht, which can accommodate up to 12 guests, is a crew of 29 people. The primary cabin is a split-level apartment with its own private stairwell. The suite features panoramic views of the ocean and a private terrace fitted with a jacuzzi. The remaining cabins are connected by a central elevator across three decks of the ship.
