Why motor sailing is good seamanship

Pete Goss

  • July 12, 2020

Pete Goss looks at the times it can pay to switch on the engine, making life easier and allowing for better sailing

motorboat sailing club

While the purist may want to avoid using the engine, knowing when to fire it up can make all the difference to a successful cruise

Fortunately, even for the racers out there competing in the Vendée Globe, engines are now mandatory, so that everyone shares the benefits without compromising competition.

In my younger days a similarly narrow focus had me marvelling as French cruisers sculled in and out of marinas. I was subsequently disappointed to learn that they weren’t purists at all; they were driven, instead, by tax. An unintended consequence was that it elevated French seamanship to another level.

Objectively there are far broader benefits to having an engine than the interests of speed, cost and drag to sailing. I would always have one but why do we often feel a sense of guilty failure when we turn it on, or admit to using it in the bar?

Perhaps it is a throwback to when smoke-billowing steam ships swept the purity, romance and majesty of clippers from our oceans. Lingering shame would have been given short shrift during Raphael Dinelli’s rescue in the Southern Ocean if I had been able to magic an engine on board.

Fortunately, my boat-handling skills, polished by having to sail in and out of marinas with fee-paying guests, saved the day.

Combining sail and engine power can stabilise the boat, punch through steep chop or make a crucial tidal gate

Manoeuvring under sail

Perhaps we should review our relationship and not allow an engine to become a cuckoo that elbows boat handling under sail from the nest. Switching on the engine needn’t preclude the pleasure found in good boat handling under sail – it is an essential skill that can be honed with the engine in neutral.

To an extent, running the engine can encourage us to take on manoeuvres that we might not otherwise, laying ready to reverse us out of mistakes and grasping a priceless lesson without the butcher’s bill of a collision to pay for it.

There is nothing more satisfying than nailing it under sail and as with all things in life, practice makes perfect. In fact, there is one thing more satisfying and that is to offer it to the crew and watch them grow in stature as their skills develop.

Skills that might one day save your life should you fall over the side. Again, this is made all the better as a learning experience with the engine on, reducing stress for all concerned.

Major Shift for Jimmie Johnson's Team Just Announced in Surprising Update

Jimmie Johnson's No. 84 Legacy Motor Club team has announced a change in their seasoned lineup as they celebrate the joining of Gene Wachtel as rew chief for the legendary seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, replacing Jason Burdett who parted ways with the team in August.

This surprising update was officially unveiled in the team's weekly race preview on Tuesday.

Transitioning from a dominant career in NASCAR to the NTT IndyCar Series in 2021 and 2022, Johnson has had a difficult return to NASCAR as a part-time driver and co-owner of Legacy Motor Club in 2023. Despite his historic success, his experience with the Next Gen cars has seen limited success this year, with his best performances being 28th place finishes at both the Daytona 500 and Dover Motor Speedway this year.

The recent crew chief change is a big pivot for the team. Jason Burdett, who previously served as Johnson's crew chief, moved to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series to work with Tanner Gray and the No. 15 Tricon Garage team following his departure from Legacy Motor Club. With big changes in their leadership structure, Johnson's team is looking to take a new direction with Wachtel at the helm.

Jimmie Johnson

Gene Wachtel brings a wealth of experience and technical knowledge to his new role. Wachtel's career began in 2005 with Dodge Motorsports as a Test Team Manager and extended through various high-impact roles at Hendrick Motorsports, Stewart-Haas Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, and General Motors.

Johnson commented on bringing the talented Wachtel onto the team:

"It's been a few weeks since I have been behind the wheel of a NASCAR vehicle so I'm ready to get back to work. Having Gene on board as crew chief will be great for our team, as he has great experience on the engineering side.

"We had a great run going at Kansas in the spring, and our day got cut short so my goal is to pick up where we left off and put together a competitive race for the No. 84 team."

Most recently, Wachtel served as a simulation consultant and engineering developer before joining Pratt & Miller in 2017 to advance data analytics strategies and software development. Prior to his appointment as crew chief, he was the Performance Director for Legacy Motor Club, a role he will continue to hold alongside his new duties.

"I'm excited to work with Jimmie and the 84 crew this weekend in Kansas," Wachtel said. "I had a very small role as Jimmie's data engineer during his first championship season and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to come full circle and lead the 84 team this weekend at Kansas."

This leadership change within Johnson's team arrives at a crucial point as the final stretch of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season approaches. Johnson has three races left: the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway, the race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 20, and the season finale at Phoenix Raceway on November 10. The expertise and fresh perspective Wachtel offers could be the catalyst needed to turn their season around.

Wachtel Named New Crew Chief for Johnson, No. 84 LEGACY MOTOR CLUB Team

Toby christie | 7 hours ago.

Jimmie Johnson and the No. 84 LEGACY MOTOR CLUB team will have a new crew chief, Gene Wachtel, starting this weekend at Kansas Speedway.

Gene Wachtel has been named as the new crew chief for Jimmie Johnson and the No. 84 LEGACY MOTOR CLUB team heading into this weekend's Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. The team officially revealed the news, which confirmed a Monday report by TobyChristie.com , in its weekly race preview on Tuesday.

Johnson, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, left NASCAR to pursue the challenge of racing in the NTT IndyCar Series in 2021, and 2022. Johnson became co-owner of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, formerly known as Petty GMS, and returned to the NASCAR Cup Series circuit as a part-time driver for the team in 2023.

In nine starts behind the wheel of the No. 84 entry, Johnson has struggled to acclimate to the tricky NASCAR Next Gen race car. His best finish with LEGACY MOTOR CLUB is 28th, which he has achieved on two separate occasions, this year's Daytona 500 and the event at Dover Motor Speedway in April.

Perhaps the crew chief change is precisely what Johnson, 49, needs to return to the top-half of the running order in a series he dominated for two decades.

In August, the team and Jason Burdett, who had been serving as the crew chief for Johnson and the No. 84 team announced that they had parted ways. Burdett has since landed a role as the crew chief for Tanner Gray and the No. 15 TRICON Garage team in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series .

Wachtel, who earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte upon graduating in 2004, has been involved in motorsports since 2005 when he was hired as the Dodge Motorsports Test Team Manager.

Following his run with Dodge, Wachtel had stints at Hendrick Motorsports, where he was a Design and Data Acquisition Engineer, and Stewart-Haas Racing, where he was a Design Engineer, and 7-Post Engineer. After a five-year run with Performance Concepts of the Carolinas, where he served as a simulation consultant and Engineering Developer for General Motors' NASCAR program, he accepted the role of Data Analytics for Joe Gibbs Racing a position he held until the end of 2017.

Wachtel moved to Pratt & Miller in 2017, where he developed data analytics strategies and software utilizing track data to extract performance. Prior to being named the crew chief for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB's part-time No. 84 team, Wachtel had been serving as the Performance Director for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, a role he will continue in addition to his crew chief duties.

Including this weekend's Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway, Johnson has three races remaining on his 2024 NASCAR Cup Series driving schedule. Johnson will also race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, October 20 and the season finale at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, November 10.

Historic Detroit Yacht Club Gears Up to Host the Prestigious 2024 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship

Host Spotlight: Detroit Yacht Club – 2024 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship

As Detroit Yacht Club (DYC) gears up to host the 2024 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship, Event Chair, Roy Lamphier, shares insights into what makes this historic venue an exceptional choice for this distinguished event. Founded in 1868 by Detroit sailing enthusiasts, the DYC has been a steadfast advocate for the sport of sailing for over a century and a half.

DYC offers an extensive range of amenities, including a marina with over 300 boat wells, a harbor that accommodates vessels up to 100 feet in length, tennis courts, and a fitness center. The club also boasts an Olympic-size swimming pool, dining facilities, and a full calendar of social events, making it a hub for both sailing and social activities. It’s a vibrant community where members can enjoy the sport of sailing, as well as various recreational activities year-round.

The club is no stranger to hosting major sailing events, having previously hosted the Mallory Cup back in 2000. The decision to host the championship again comes from the club’s commitment to promoting sailboat racing and fostering competitive excellence. “With a rich history in the sport, the DYC has been a leader in advancing sailboat racing through its vibrant racing programs, top-tier facilities, and deep-rooted tradition of supporting sailors of all levels,” says Lamphier.

Hosting the U.S. Adult Sailing Championship is a chance for DYC to showcase its commitment to sailing and its unique sailing environment. Lamphier advises other clubs considering hosting similar events to “embrace the opportunity to showcase both your club’s commitment to competitive sailing and your unique sailing environment. Focus on the strengths of your venue, from your facilities to your local waters, and highlight how your club fosters a strong culture of racing and sportsmanship.”

For Lamphier, one of the most rewarding aspects of hosting such events is the energy and camaraderie it brings to the club. “There’s something special about watching talented sailors from all over come together, share their passion for the sport, and compete at a high level. It’s inspiring to see the blend of competition and sportsmanship, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of creating memorable experiences, both on the water and off.”

As Detroit Yacht Club prepares to welcome sailors to the 2024 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship, the club looks forward to a thrilling event that will not only challenge the competitors but also continue to foster a sense of community and sportsmanship in the sailing world. The Dedicated Sailors (and … Jet-Skiers?) on Philly’s Rivers

Members of the Liberty Sailing Club may have to dodge tug boats, a ferry, and the occasional tanker, but their reward is a view of the city few others get. Those Schuylkill jet-skiers, though …

Get a compelling long read and must-have lifestyle tips in your inbox every Sunday morning — great with coffee!

sailing, boating, delaware river, schuylkill river, philly rivers

The Delaware River is extremely choppy when I sail for the very first time.

I’m on a small boat with three members of Philadelphia’s Liberty Sailing Club , who tell me that the whitecaps of the water, which glisten in the hot afternoon sun, are caused when the current flows in one direction (out to sea, in this case) while the wind blows in the opposite.

The river looks a little fierce — to me, at least — when our skipper instructs me to turn the boat upwind. I push the wooden tiller as the crew scrambles about the boat, yelling about adjusting the sails. Before I know it, I’m dipping down toward the Delaware as the boat lurches, and the whitecaps are now just behind my back. I jump to port (the left side of the boat, which is now several feet above the height of the river) and prepare to capsize. This is it , I think. Hopefully the Delaware isn’t as nasty as it seems .

I look around. None of the crew members appear even the slightest bit alarmed, so I start to relax. “Is this normal?” I ask Bill Weist , our skipper.

He shouts back, “This is nothing!”

The boat we’re on, one of Liberty Sailing Club’s beautiful J/27s, is designed to self-right; after a few seconds, the hull of the boat evens out.

motorboat sailing club

Bill Weist smiles as Krayola, a sailboat belonging to Liberty Sailing Club members Maureen Mastroieni and Skip Markowitz (the group’s longest member), passes by.

Weist, 73, is a former commodore of Liberty Sailing Club, which has deployed a fleet of elegant, white-sailed J/27s on the Delaware since 1989, when a few Philly-based entrepreneurs got the idea to model the club after the Manhattan Yacht Club, a similar organization in New York City. A few years after its inception, Liberty Sailing Club became a nonprofit, and it’s now the most active and organized of several groups that cruise Philly’s waterways regularly. Its members, like many people who boat and/or sail in Philadelphia, prefer the spacious Delaware, with their headquarters located nearby at 303 North Front Street and their sailboats docked at the Pier 5 marina.

But every day, people explore both of Philly’s rivers — by sailboat, motorboat, yacht, canoe, kayak, and even jet ski. And whether folks opt for a sail on the Delaware or a short, scenic spin up the Schuylkill, they’ll all probably tell you the same thing: that the rivers offer whole new view — and experience — of the city.

That’s what 57-year-old Liberty Sailing Club member  Kate Ferris  says as we’re passing under the Benjamin Franklin Bridge while a PATCO train roars overhead. Ferris grew up sailing in New England and Cape Cod; she says navigating these waters is “different, but just as nice.”

“Philadelphia and Camden are so gorgeous from the water,” Ferris says, smiling. “The views are right here in our backyard.”

The Rules of the Rivers

The Delaware and the Schuylkill rivers might not seem like the cleanest or the most idyllic for sailing, kayaking or jet-skiing — but all of these activities are fair game.

Officer  Nathan Hancock  of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boating Commission, which oversees the state’s waterways, stresses that there are a rules you have to follow if you’re using the rivers. They’re similar to the kinds of restrictions that you’d see driving: “There are speed restrictions in certain areas, right-of-way rules that have to be followed, obviously safety equipment that needs to be in a boat, required lighting equipment on a boat if it’s going to be out after dark,” Hancock says.

motorboat sailing club

You also have to wear a coast-guard-approved life vest (which sailors call a “PFD,” short for portable flotation device) and carry some sort of sound device, like a whistle. But other than that, he says, “If it’s a boat and you can find a place to fit it, you can pretty much drive it up the river to your heart’s content.”

When it comes to the comparably smaller Schuylkill, Hancock says, “Obviously you’re not going to drive a luxury 50-foot yacht up to the Fairmount dam.”

But what you will see on the Schuylkill — south of the Fairmount dam, at least — are small motor boats, kayaks and jet skis, which are regulated the same way as boats. With a quick scan of Twitter, you’ll (perhaps understandably) see a lot of questioning as to why anyone would want to jet ski on the Schuylkill River.

there’s psychopaths and then there’s people who literally think “oh today would be a great day to take my jet ski out on the schuylkill” — victoria wilson (@terrifictoria) May 26, 2018
Its somthin thats just aint right seeing people riding jet ski's in the schuylkill river who does that & why if u fall ur takin a shit bath — Rese Genovese (@ReseRacer) September 19, 2010

But jet-skiing on both the Delaware River and the tidal portion of the Schuylkill — between the Delaware River and the Art Museum dam, where you can get stunning views of the city skyline — is “pretty popular,” Hancock says.

“It’s a fun boat ride going up there, from downtown up by the Art Museum,” he says. “It’s really enjoyable.”

And it sure is beautiful. Behold one jet-skier who shared his ride to YouTube in 2015:

Hancock says that on a nice summer day, you can typically expect to see roughly 20 to 30 boats (including jet skis) on the tidal portion of the Schuylkill, where boats with motors must stick to idling speed.

While the Boathouse Row area would also make for a stunning spin, you won’t (or shouldn’t) see any jet skis or recreational boats in that stretch of the Schuylkill, which includes the water north of the dam near the Art Museum and south of the Girard Avenue bridge. Only rowing boats are permitted there.

Paddlecrafts like kayaks and canoes are growing in popularity on the Schuylkill as well, Hancock says. Bartram’s Garden in Southwest Philly, for example, offers weekly  free row-boating and canoeing  from its boat, and you can also pay to take kayaking tours on the Schuylkill through Hidden River Outfitters .

Head to the river this weekend and take a kayak or riverboat tour! Paddle your way along the Schuylkill or relax inside @phillybyboat 's mini commuter yacht. See some spectacular views of the city, @FairmountWW and @BartramsGarden . More info: https://t.co/slkmJlDhdt pic.twitter.com/ojkjxD0a15 — Schuylkill Banks (@SchuylkillBanks) June 6, 2018

Most of the time, the Schuylkill River is “relatively calm,” Hancock says. But boaters, kayakers and jet-skiers should use caution when the tide is flowing out to the Delaware River, because the water can be moving “deceptively fast,” Hancock says. That’s especially true after heavy rain, when the water level rises and the river is more likely to carry dangerous debris.

“You get tangled up in a tree, and you’re in trouble real fast,” he says. “It can be really hazardous.”

The Sailing Clubhouse

With the sun on our shoulders and the water lapping at the sides of our boat, Weist tells me that if you can sail the Delaware, “you can sail pretty much anywhere.”

After all, you have to be nimble on the Delaware: Liberty Sailing Club shares the water with vehicles like tankers, tug boats, a ferry, and at least three party boats. The river brings a different kind of traffic, and there are right-of-way rules about who must yield to whom.

Typically, the smaller boats with more mobility must make way for the larger boats, which are trickier to move at the last minute. But sailboats without motors are always given right-of-way priority — except for commercial boats, which are given priority over all recreational vehicles.

We encountered a few different types of boats during our sail — including a motor boat.

Weist, who joined Liberty Sailing Club in 1991 and served as commodore in 1994, tells me he sticks to three rules when it comes to boating: First, keep your boat safe; second, keep the people on it safe; and third, have fun. The boat comes first, he says, because “If the boat’s safe, everyone on it’s safe.”

As we sail and I occasionally steer (with slightly more confidence now), I’m struck by the amount of collaboration required to keep our little craft afloat. Weist, Kate Ferris and our third crew member, 56-year-old Chip Herr , adjust to the sails with the utmost care and attention.

I see the same synergy when we dock up beside another crew that includes  Maggie McMahan , who served as commodore in 2003. It’s a full-blown operation, with all hands on deck (and a lot of shouting).

After all, teamwork is exactly what the members of Liberty Sailing Club signed up for: The group is the only sailing club in Philadelphia that offers access to a fleet of club-owned boats (all J/27s), and members must chip in and help maintain the boats.

For that reason, the club is your best option if you want to sail the Delaware regularly but don’t own your own boat. (Groups like the  Philadelphia Yacht Club , on the other hand, might be more desirable if you have your own boat but are looking for something social.) But while joining Liberty Sailing Club is much cheaper than actually buying and maintaining a boat, it’s not necessarily low-cost: A full-member crew membership, which includes a season of sailing from April through November, goes for $950 a year (plus a $100 first-year initiation fee). A half-season crew membership, which includes July through November, costs $500, plus the first year initiation fee. The club does offer a variety of  discounted memberships , though.

You don’t need any experience to join the club as a crew member — and you might be surprised by how easy the hobby is to take up. On the other hand, if know the ropes, you can consider joining as a skipper (though you’ll have to pass an on-the-water test for the title). Either way, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get out on the water if you join the club: Members offer “social sailing” twice a week, racing twice a week, and your choice of racing or casual sailing on Sundays. They also hold events on some holidays, like the Fourth of July.

The day I sailed was a “social sailing” Tuesday, so after we docked, everyone who attended headed to the group’s nearby clubhouse, a small, laid-back space decorated with sailboat paintings, model sailboats, a small wooden canoe and a string of nautical flags draped over the bar space.

Here we munched on hoagies and Ruffles for nearly two hours as members told stories about riveting races and club awards, and plenty of people talked about their love of sailing. One older sailor with an affinity for puns told me that typically, friends and acquaintances will leave the room when he goes on “pun streaks.” He likes sailing because “there’s nowhere to go on a boat.”

By the end of the night, the club camaraderie and the earlier killer views of the skyline, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, Petty’s Island and Graffiti Pier left me all but convinced that I’d sail on the Delaware again.

Until then, I’ll try kayaking on the Schuylkill — and maybe one day I’ll even hop on a jet ski.

A trip to magical Sark.

We had set off from Hamble on a beautiful evening with calm seas and light winds initially. An expectant excitement was noticeable amongst the crew before we hoisted the sails and settled into our rhythm.

The real reason we sail.

Silence – except for the gentle clanging of rope on the mast. Heading up on deck, still befuddled by sleep, it felt like we had entered another world. A paradise with blue water, rugged cliffs and not a soul in sight.

42° 43' 58" -73° 41' 21

The Troy Motor Boat and Canoe Club is located on the eastern shore of the Hudson River across from Peebles Island and the Waterford Terminal Wall.

In late Fall of 1910, a club charter was drawn up at a meeting held in Troy at the home of Orville E. Bosca. Sixty-three members from Troy, Cohoes, and Waterford affixed their names to the charter list after qualifying by paying their six month dues in advance. The sum secured, was used for immediate rental of the lot at the corner of 21st and 1st Avenue in Troy, and construction of a runway, building, and launching and retrieval system for boats. At this meeting a set of officers were chosen, Orville E. Bosca was chosen to be commodore, and Thomas Ward, Charles Rich, the Honorable F. C. Filley, Alfred Judkins, and Milford Baxter were selected as trustees. Warren Pine who was a member of the club offered the use of a building until the club's was erected and ready for occupancy. Up until this time, Troy had no yacht club for a number of years and Cohoes and Waterford were in the same position. An increase in pleasure boating, led to more than 200 motor boat owners, 350 canoeists, and a number of steam yacht owners in the upper Hudson area, all enthusiastic about the formation of the new club. On Feb. 7, 1911 the club was officially incorporated, stating the purpose of the group to be for "the development of aquatic sport, the advancement of motor boating and canoeing, and for the general recreation of its members."

The Troy Motor Boat and Canoe Club takes its history seriously, still using a circa-1918 motor to power its rail-based system for launching and retrieving boats from the river. The rail and cradle boat launch system is unique to the club and is used for dispatching and reclaiming boats, which range in length from 21 to 36 feet and weigh 5,000 to 16,000 lbs. The club still uses the oldest electronic powered motor, for powering the launch and retrieval of our rail-based system. It is a classic example of the ingenuity of the early members of the club. The tradition and mission continues 100 years later.

In 2008, the club modernized its main building with a $150,000 renovation, expanding the club house, construction of a new bar, a WI-FI computerized system with large screen digital projection, and an enhanced HVAC system.

Made up of a cross-section of individuals ranging from company CEOs, to craftsmen, to machinists, the club has always been decidedly "blue collar," billing itself as a working club, where full members are expected to pitch in with cleaning, grounds maintenance, loading and retrieving boats, maintaining docks and other duties. A mutual love of the water and the desire to promote the use of the river makes for a tight-knit community. A lot of work goes in to running the club, and the group's selectivity with its membership ensures that it will remain a success for years to come.

Campbell Island

On June 14, 1991, the Commodore of the Troy Motor Boat and Canoe Club at that time, James Klein, signed an agreement with the State of New York leasing Campbell Island. At a rate of $450 per year, the Club was permitted and did erect a portable shelter, dock and picnic area for use by the Club's members. With the parcel no. 2596A in Rensselaer county the lot of land is described as the southerly tip of Campbell Island in the town of Schaghticoke. Club members enjoy the use of Campbell Island during the boating season for both special events (such as the Club's Island Party and Lazy River) and quiet weekend getaways.

Carrum Sailing and Motor Boat Club

Carrum Sailing and Motor Boat Club

Carrum Sailing and Motor Boat Club ( csmbc.asn.au) Lat: 38° 4’26.56″S Lon: 145° 7’13.53″E is a great place to sail and meet others interested in powerboating. Located on the sandy beaches of south-east Port Phillip Bay, just south of the Patterson River. We sail trailerable yachts, off the beach dinghies and catamarans on most Sundays. People of all ages and experience are welcome. Enjoy first-class facilities at our soon to be built clubrooms facing the beach, adjacent to the Carrum Lifesaving Club. We also have social memberships available!

The Carrum Sailing and Motor Boat Club has a long and distinguished history. In 1946 the Patterson River Motor Yacht Club was formed. After 20 years of successful operation it was decided to split the club into the Patterson River Motor Boat Club and the Carrum Sailing Club. These two clubs continued for the next 50 years having separate websites, club premises, and members. 3 years ago the declining memberships, the poor state of both club rooms and the change in demographics. saw the two clubs come together. This was the beginning of the merge combining resources with a view to getting a grant and funding for a new building on the site of the Carrum Sailing Club.

Members come from the local area and further afield. Sailing and motor boating enthusiasts from all walks of life. Families, individuals, young and old enjoy the sport and social activities the club provides. Great friendships have been made and many happy hours on and off the water have been had.
