The sport is governed by two main organizations: the British Powerboat Racing Club (BPRC) and the UK Offshore Racing Association (UKOPRA).
The BPRC is responsible for organizing and promoting the races themselves, while the UKOPRA oversees the technical and safety aspects of offshore powerboat racing in the UK.
Class one vee powerboats are a popular type of powerboat used in offshore racing in the UK. These boats are designed for speed and maneuverability, and can reach speeds of up to 120 mph. They are typically piloted by a team consisting of a driver and a throttleman, who work together to control the boat’s speed and direction.
Offshore racing events in the UK featuring class one vee powerboats include the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes and Poole-Bournemouth-Poole races, as well as the Guernsey Gold Cup and the Falmouth Fowey race. These events are highly competitive and attract large crowds of fans and spectators.

Katy griffiths joins as head of programming, world beating poole sailor pip hare becomes lighthouse patron.
Lighthouse is honoured to announce record breaking, Poole-based solo yachtswoman Pip Hare has become its latest Patron.
Pip, who is the eighth woman to complete the Vendée Globe single handed non-stop 24,000-mile round-the-world yacht race – more men have walked on the moon, took time out from her preparations for this year’s race, which starts on 10 November, to show her support for Lighthouse.
“I am honoured to be asked to become a Patron of Lighthouse. As one of the largest cultural organisations outside of London, Lighthouse has been instrumental in putting Poole on the map and focussing the attention of the wider world on our wonderful town. Poole is home to my Vendée Globe campaign. I have a brilliant team here, I love being part of this community, and I am incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of local people and companies.”
Pip is at the centre of a small but growing team of expertise in ocean racing in Poole and has overseen the upgrade of her yacht Medallia with new foils that last summer saw her hit speeds in excess of 36 knots, with the knowledge there is more to come.
A regular at Lighthouse, where she has hosted two fascinating ‘Evening With’ events, she is currently training, race testing and, of course, fundraising for her latest bid to compete as hard as she can in the Vendée.
“Pip is a huge inspiration to me and to our local community and I am very proud that she has agreed to support Lighthouse as our Patron,” says Lighthouse Chief Executive Elspeth McBain.
“As a major Poole organisation, we are fully behind her campaign to compete in the Vendée Globe, but also behind her vision to create a world class ocean racing team here in our town. Pip embodies courage, determination, exceptional skill, bravery, self-belief, and is such a huge role model, especially for women and girls. She is a local treasure whom I believe should be cherished and supported. I can’t wait to see what she achieves next.”

What is prw.
It’s a powerboat racing website that has covered circuit racing, offshore racing and PWC since 2016. Maintained by The Race Factory based in Norway who have specialists in event planning and promotion, social media, graphic design, and photography. We are currently working on our vision and believe that we can and will make a different in powerboating. We will dedicate our time to produce accurate factual stories and to promote the sport to a wider global audience.
2020 has been a year to forget for the majority of us, however, the United Kingdom Offshore Powerboat Racing Association, (UKOPRA) have pulled out all the stops to ensure that their British racers get to enjoy at least two races in Poole, Dorset this weekend.
UKOPRA’s Chairman, Kerry Bobin told me this afternoon:
This weekend was originally scheduled for the 60th anniversary of offshore racing from Cowes. The directors of the British Powerboat Racing Club had to make a decision some months ago to postpone that historic occasion until next year with the huge issues that they faced with the pandemic. I decided that our racers should have something to aim for during the dark days of the lock down and I’m pleased to say that we will have at least 15 boats racing in Poole Bay this weekend.
Bobin is calling it a ‘revival’.
It’s amazing really, we could well see the Don Shead designed Uno Embassy on the start line which hasn’t raced since 2010 and a wooden Cougar cat, Unipart Lambs, that last competed 31 years ago!
They won’t be the only ‘big boats’ in Poole this weekend. The FB Design RIB, Pippa, and a couple of Sunseeker XS 2000 will no doubt lead a good field of Class 3 boats at the first start tomorrow.
Jason Briggs watched the Class 3 boats being launched
We’ve got two races this weekend. A short run tomorrow to blow the cobwebs away and our now traditional Poole 100 race on Sunday.
I asked Bobin about putting on these races under the current conditions:
We have complied with the all of the usual things, insurance, safety cover and risk assessments. On top of that I’ve looked at the new laws in England that cover COVID-19 and I’m very comfortable that UKOPRA has ticked all of those boxes too. I need to thank all of our officials and medical staff this weekend, their love of the sport has helped us jump through the many hoops.
It’s a bold move from the offshore organiser and Powerboat Racing World looks forward to sharing Chris Davies and Mike Powell’s photographs of this weekend’s races.

The pairing from Christchurch in Dorset will be racing a P1 Panther 28ft mono-hull boat in the Poole Bay 100, which is part of the UKOPRA World and National Offshore Championship.
First, it's worth understanding that the entire weekend consists of three races. On Saturday, there is the 210-miles Cowes-Torquay-Cowes headliner for the larger Class 120, 100, 80 and 60 raceboats and the shorter 105-mile Cowes-Poole-Cowes race for the smaller Class 75, 65 and boats. Those contests run concurrently.
The season opener for the UKOPRA four-round National Championship started in spectacular style in Poole Bay, Dorset this past weekend.
