The Hallberg-Rassy 43 is known for its robust construction and proven performance as a bluewater cruiser. Perfectly suited for both coastal and offshore sailing, the 43 features a spacious two-cabin layout that includes a roomy owner’s aft cabin and a comfortable forward guest cabin, both with their own head with shower. The yacht’s thoughtful design incorporates a well-equipped, sea-going galley and a dedicated navigation area. The saloon offers a cozy atmosphere with a sofa and two comfortable armchairs.

The Hallberg-Rassy 43 also boasts a large, easily accessible engine room, a protective centre cockpit with a windshield, ample water and diesel tankage, and a sturdy rubbing strake along the hull. With its classic, elegant lines, the Hallberg-Rassy 43 is an ideal choice for both extended cruising and luxurious long-term liveaboard living.

Hallberg-Rassy 43, SID is a Mk1 model that was delivered to its current (first) owner in 2003. Apart from a sailing trip to the Mediterranean and back about 15 years ago, SID has been sailed in Nordic waters during summertime and spent the winters on land.

In 2022 SID had an update made by Adams Boat Care. The update included installation of a Seldén SMS electric main sail furling system, indirect LED lightning package, replacement of all through hull fittings, lithium service batteries (400Ah), a battery charger, a 3kW inverter, new skylights and portlight glasses and much more.

Designed by Bernard Olesinski , she was built in GRP by UK yard Princess Yachts and delivered in 2016. An interior in gloss-finished walnut wood accommodates 10 guests in five cabins consisting of a main deck master suite, VIP suite, a double and two twins.

Russia-Ukraine war: Kremlin sends 'signal' to West after Putin's nuclear threat - as Zelenskyy gets glide bombs from Biden

Joe Biden has just confirmed he will provide Ukraine with additional long-range munitions - but he has not relented on allowing the missiles to be launched into Russia. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin is changing Russia's nuclear doctrine in a new escalation threat.

If you're just joining us, it's been a significant few hours for the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Here are the main things you need to know:

• Joe Biden has announced a "surge" in military support for Ukraine, with a new package including long-desired glide bombs , fresh air defence kit, and more training for Ukrainian pilots;
• The announcement was welcomed as "critical" by Volodymyr Zelenskyy , who has been holding talks with Mr Biden at the White House after speaking at the United Nations in New York yesterday;
• But our security and defence editor Deborah Haynes said while the package was welcome, it fell short of what Kyiv had been hoping for;
• While it includes more long-range missiles, permission for Ukraine to fire them into Russian territory has still not been given .
• Vladimir Putin has been back at the nuclear sabre-rattling , suggesting new rules which would let Russia use them if it ever came under attack - even by conventional weapons;
• The Kremlin said the West should take it as a "signal" , and warned of "unprecedented confrontation" if it helps attack Russia;
• Experts say his threat is designed to trigger  "a new wave of panic"  across the West and ensure they don't give Ukraine permission to fire long-range missiles into Russia.
• And back to those Biden-Zelenskyy talks, it's been reported the US president isn't happy with his Ukrainian counterpart's "victory plan" ;
• According to The Wall Street Journal, US officials are concerned it doesn't include enough detail on potential diplomatic solutions .

Sergei Lavrov and Cardinal Pietro Larolin - in effect, Pope Francis's second in command - met for talks about the war with Ukraine late on Wednesday.

A statement from the Russian ministry said the pair discussed "mutual actions in the humanitarian sphere in the context of the Ukrainian crisis" on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

It also said Mr Lavrov and Cardinal Parolin spoke about "reasons for the geopolitical crisis, a direct consequence of the consistent anti-Russian policies of Western countries".

Relations between the Vatican and Kyiv have been strained at times due to a number of Pope Francis's comments since the invasion took place in February 2022.

However, the pope has repeatedly called for peace and condemned attacks by Russia that have caused loss of life since the conflict began.

Additionally, a papal envoy has visited both Kyiv and Moscow as part of efforts to bring Ukrainian children allegedly deported to Russia back to their homes.

Perhaps the most notable part of the new US aid package announced for Ukraine today is the inclusion of glide bombs.

This type of weaponry has been used by Russia during the war and has been long desired by Kyiv.

What are they?

The US Air Force describes them as "an unpowered glide weapon used to destroy high-value targets".

They are 12ft long, 18 inches in diameter, and weigh 2,500 pounds.

Each bomb costs up to $245,000 - they're cheaper than the ballistic and cruise missiles Russia regularly fires at Ukraine.

As our security and defence editor Deborah Haynes says - and as their name implies - they have retractable wings that help them reach targets upwards of 70 miles away.

They can be deployed from the F-16 fighter jets Ukraine also recently received from the US.

Reports suggest the glide bombs will be equipped with cluster munitions.

How do they work?

These bombs are equipped with satellite guidance capabilities that help them navigate in all conditions - day and night, and during bad weather.

They can be guided by an operator by remote control after being launched from the aircraft, but they can also lock on to targets beforehand and be guided there automatically.

The wings are arranged in an X-like arrangement, helping them glide through the air with the required accuracy.

Their wingspan is 4ft 11 inches.

The UK has just confirmed it  has extended its sanctions regime on Russia to include five ships and two shipping fulfilment companies. 

Earlier this month, the Westminster government slapped sanctions on 10 ships in Moscow's so-called "shadow fleet".

It is alleged that Russia uses these vessels to avoid Western restrictions on Russian oil exports.

In the past year, there has been growth in the number of oil tankers transporting cargoes that are not regulated or insured by conventional Western providers

The new ships under British sanctions are: Asya Energy, Pioneer, North Sky, SCF La Perouse and Nova Energy. 

And the shipping companies are: White Fox Ship Management and Ocean Speedstar Solutions OPC.

Moscow has returned nine children who were deported to Russia back to their relatives in Ukraine, reports have suggested today.

Maria Lvova-Belova, the Children's Rights Commissioner for Russia, said the group included eight boys, aged 12 to 17, and one 17-year-old girl.

The return was co-ordinated by Qatar.

Ms Lvova-Belova said representatives from Qatar had "participated in negotiations with the Ukrainian side".

They also "accompany children and relatives" and taken care of "transportation and other expenses". 

"The International Committee of the Red Cross, regional children's ombudsmen, representatives of relevant departments, and law enforcement agencies also participate in the work."

As of today, a total of 80 children from 62 families have been reunited with their relatives - both in Ukraine and third party countries.

Ukraine has accused Russia of deporting children during the occupation of a number of cities in Ukraine, such as Donetsk, Kharkiv and Kherson.

As we've just reported, US President Joe Biden has announced a raft of new military support for Ukraine, including long-awaited glide bombs.

Although the package fell short of what Ukraine is really after - permission to launch these long-range missiles into Russia - it has been received warmly by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In a statement posted to X - previously Twitter - President Zelenskyy said he is "grateful" to the US for its $7.9bn pledge.

"We will use this assistance in the most efficient and transparent manner to achieve our major common goal: victory for Ukraine, just and lasting peace, and transatlantic security," he said.

US aid 'critical' to war effort

The president said the new package - including air defence kit, drones, long-range missiles, and more training for Ukrainian pilots - would be "most critical to protecting our people" 

"Ukraine and the United States remain close allies dedicated to defending freedom, human life, and shared security in Europe and beyond," he added.

"We have always valued the strong bipartisan support in the United States and among Americans for Ukraine’s just cause of defeating Russian aggression."

A decision by the US to give Ukraine powerful glide bombs is a key step-up in support, but it falls short of what Kyiv wants most – permission to fire American weapons inside Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been lobbying hard at the UN General Assembly in New York this week and is due to meet US President Joe Biden in the White House on Thursday, but he does not yet appear to have unlocked this demand.

A grand public announcement by the US on greenlighting the use of long-range Western missiles on Russian soil was always seen as unlikely given the concern about how Moscow would respond.

Far more likely is news suddenly breaking that a US or UK missile has already been deployed.

Putin's nuclear sabre-rattling

But the absence of either scenario signals that a decision has yet to be finalised amid increased sabre-rattling by Russia's president.

On Wednesday, it emerged that Vladimir Putin has altered his country's nuclear rules to widen the scenarios for when his forces would launch a nuclear strike. 

The rhetoric appears designed to make Washington hesitate in its deliberations about whether to let Ukraine use its Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) ballistic missiles against targets inside Russia.

The UK, by contrast, appears more inclined to approve the firing of its Storm Shadow cruise missiles but wants any such decision to be made together with the US.

It leaves Ukraine once again waiting and warning of dire consequences for its people as Russian forces gain ground in the east and launch punishing air assaults nationwide.

Glide bombs among new military aid

That said, the latest US military package – possibly the last to be signed off by Joe Biden before he leaves office - is significant and designed to send a strong message of support at a time when Ukrainian forces are under pressure.

It includes for the first time a munition called the Joint Standoff Weapon, which can be fired by Ukraine’s newly acquired F-16 fighter jets.

The glide bombs have retractable wings that help them reach targets up to 70 miles away. There are different variants but the type that will be sent to Ukraine will reportedly be equipped with cluster munitions.

Russia has increased the use of its own arsenal of glide bombs, using them to target Ukrainian forces and also civilian infrastructure to devastating effect.

The arming of Ukraine with a similar American weapon will bolster the ability of the Ukrainian air force to attack Russian positions from a distance.

However, it is not yet clear when – or if – this will ever include targets inside Russia.

US President Joe Biden has just confirmed he will provide Ukraine with additional long-range munitions - but he has not relented on allowing the missiles to be launched into Russia.

Ukraine has long campaigned for its allies - largely the US and UK - to allow Kyiv to launch missiles provided by the West into Russia.

And with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the US for the United Nations General Assembly, President Biden hosted him in the White House.

Making a series of announcements on US support for Ukraine at 11am, the president said he had "decided to provide Ukraine with the Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) long-range munition".

There was no mention of permission to launch these weapons into Russia.

President Biden said: "For nearly three years, the United States has rallied the world to stand with the people of Ukraine as they defend their freedom from Russian aggression.

"It has been a top priority of my administration to provide Ukraine with the support it needs to prevail."

Confirming a "surge" in security assistance for Ukraine, President Biden announced:

• $2.4bn in funding for Ukraine, through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. This will provide Ukraine will additional air defence and air-to-ground munitions;
• The US will provide Ukraine with the Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) long-range munition;
• Ukraine will also be given "hundreds of additional Patriot and AMRAAM missiles over the next year";
• Training will be expanded for Ukrainian F-16 pilots, including by supporting the training of an additional 18 pilots next year;
• The US has also "taken action today to disrupt a global cryptocurrency network, in coordination with international partners";
• And the US will continue to raise the costs on Russia for its war in Ukraine and to deprive the Russian defence industrial base of resources;
• President Biden has also pledged to convene a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group in Germany - to co-ordinate the efforts of the 50 countries supporting Ukraine.

He concluded: "Through these actions, my message is clear: The United States will provide Ukraine with the support it needs to win this war."

The Kremlin has warned Ukraine's allies this morning that there could be "consequences if Western countries participate in an attack on Russia".

Russia claimed it could lead to an "unprecedented" level of "confrontation".

The Kremlin also said that changes to its nuclear documents should be considered a "signal" to "unfriendly" countries.

Russia has not yet decided whether to publish these documents, but said "adjustments" to the policy on nuclear deterrence "have now been formulated".  

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to have brought his so-called Victory Plan with him to the US, where the UN General Assembly is being held.

President Zelenskyy will also reportedly meet with Joe Biden in Washington, and it has been suggested he will present this plan to the president - and presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

This document has yet to be published, but elements of the contents have emerged in the media.

President Zelenskyy first mentioned the Victory Plan on Ukraine's Independence Day. He later told CNN : "For us, victory is to be very strong and ready for strong diplomacy.

"And that is why I have prepared several points – four of them are the main ones, and one that we will need after the war."

Reports suggest that Ukraine's plan will include an in-depth list of military weapons and equipment Kyiv believes it needs to defeat Russia.

Another point likely to be included is the plea for permission to launch Western long-range missiles into Russia.

Biden 'unhappy' with Victory Plan proposed by Zelenskyy - reports

This morning, the Wall Street Journal has reported that the Biden administration is unhappy with President Zelenskyy's proposals.

The WSJ said senior officials have reviewed the document in part, and there is a concern that it lacks a comprehensive strategy.

Instead, it is claimed, the proposals are limited to requests for weapon provisions and reiterating Ukraine's call for permission to launch long-range missiles into Russia.

Sources claimed that the sections of the Victory Plan dedicated to diplomacy are far less detailed.
