SECOND GENERATION QUARTZ MODELS

In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and Yema decided to invest heavily in the research and development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted in the second generation of the Yema Yachtingraf in 1977.

From 1988 until 2004 the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation was the owner of Yema. The Yema company was then bought back by French investers and renamed as ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’. For that reason a Seiko movement is used in a Yema watch during 88-94. In 1992 Yema sponsored the French team as competitor at the America’s Cup, with the launch of the Yema Yachtingraf America’s Cup France with a Seiko quartz movement.

Yema Watches Brand Review: History and Buyer’s Guide

on December 24, 2023

The History of Yema Watches

Yema is a French watch brand with a rich history dating back to 1948. Yema timepieces are available in a wide variety of designs as the brand designed watches for diving, auto racing, sailing, and even space exploration.

Yema was founded by Henry Louis Belmont in Besançon, France in 1948. Belmont, a graduate of the National Watchmaking School of Besançon, aimed to create high-quality watches that could compete with Swiss matchmaking.

In the 1950s, Yema launched its first line of automatic watches, and in the 1960s, it expanded its range with the introduction of dive watches and chronographs.

One of the most well-known collections of the brand, the Yema Superman was introduced in 1963. It was designed for diving professionals and featured a novel locking bezel.

Expansion in the 1970s & 1980s

The 1970s saw Yema further cement its reputation in the sports watch market. The Yema Rallygraf, a watch designed for car racing enthusiasts, and the Yema Yachtingraf, tailored for sailing, were both significant releases.

In 1982, Yema also became the first French watch in space when astronaut Jean-Loup Chrétien wore a Yema watch during a Soviet space mission.

The Seiko Era (1988-2004)

Yema was acquired by the Japanese watch giant Seiko in 1988. This period saw a mix of French design and Japanese technology in its watches. Even though the company was under new ownership, Yema maintained a distinct brand identity.

Return to French Ownership in 2004

In 2004, Louis Eric Beckensteiner who was the general director of the company, acquired Yema from the Hattori-Seiko group to bring the brand back to its original positioning: watches made in France, focusing on French origins, design, and manufacturing.

Ownership in 2009 changed again: remaining under French control, the Ambre group acquired Yema. This marked a further return to its roots, with a focus on revisiting and reissuing classic models, such as the Superman and Rallygraf.

In recent years, Yema has continued to innovate while holding its heritage in the forefront of the vision. The brand has delved into limited edition models, collaborations, and has introduced new technologies in its watches. The brand’s commitment to quality and its rich heritage has allowed it to remain a respected name in the watch industry.

Throughout its history, Yema has balanced innovation with tradition, and has consistently produced watches that appeal to both watch enthusiasts and casual wearers. Despite facing competition from both Swiss and other international brands, Yema has maintained a unique place in the watchmaking world, thanks to its distinct French identity and commitment to quality craftsmanship.

Yema Watch Movements: What Movement Does Yema Use?

Mbp 1000 caliber.

In 2011, Yema introduced an in-house watch movement named the MBP 1000, a 3-hand movement, featuring a unique design. It’s equipped with a bidirectional oscillating weight set on ball bearings, enabling swift winding and a 40-hour power reserve. This design not only enhances efficiency but also precision, thanks to a regulating mechanism where the balance oscillates at 28,800 beats per hour. The movement is a 31-jewel caliber (incorporates 31 rubies), with two rubies positioned at the barrel’s axis ends, reducing the typical friction observed in these mechanical parts. This innovative arrangement contributes to the movement’s enhanced performance and reliability.

Yema 2000 Caliber

The Yema 2000 caliber is the brand’s 2nd generation in-house movement, the MBP 1000 evolved into this new caliber. While most technical specifications remain the same, one notable difference is the number of jewels, the Yema 2000 has 29 jewels from 31.

Yema Brand Reputation

Yema has built a reputation for producing high-quality, reliable watches. Their designs typically blend traditional aesthetics with modern functionality, appealing to both watch enthusiasts and casual wearers.

The brand gained prominence in the mid-20th century, especially with its iconic dive watches like the Yema Superman and the Yema Rallye. These models are celebrated for their durability, precision, and unique design features, like the Superman’s lockable bezel.

In recent years, Yema has seen a resurgence in popularity, partly due to a revival of interest in vintage and retro-style watches. They have also garnered attention for their commitment to French manufacturing and craftsmanship, with some of their models featuring in-house movements.

Overall, Yema is considered a respected and reliable brand in the watchmaking industry, offering high-quality products at a relatively affordable price point.

Takeaway: Are Yema Watches Good Watches? Are They Worth the Money?

Yema is known for their innovation and craftsmanship, and is appreciated by collectors and everyday users alike for their blend of functionality, durability, and classic style. Yema watches are considered affordable, as their quartz pieces are in the $500 range, while their automatic watches are between $1,500 and $2,000. Their watches and movements are made in France and partly in Switzerland. If you are on a hunt for outstanding craftsmanship and timeless design, but want something that is slightly “off the beaten path” and more rare, Yema is an excellent option, with a wide variety of beautifully designed timepieces.

One of its less explored corners belongs to Yema watches. This French company has been producing great watches since 1948, and it's worth the attention. This is their story and what they have to offer to watch lovers worldwide.

The Yema Spationaute 1 became the first French watch in space when worn by French astronaut Jean-Loup Chrétien during his 10-day space mission in 1982.

A little bit of history behind Yema watches

Henry Lois Belmont, a visionary watchmaker with a rich background in the watchmaking world, founded Yema Watches. And things started to develop very fast, with each new step breaking new frontiers. Here are just a couple of remarkable stops in Yema's prolific 75-year-long history so far:

  • 1963 - Yema Superman Diver introduction
  • 1966 - Yema Yachtingraf and Yema Rallygraf come to life
  • 1982 - Yema Spationaute 1 becomes the first French watch to travel into space
  • 2009 - Yema introduces its first in-house mechanism
  • 2017 - Yema Spacegraf honors Frances's 10th astronaut mission

Yema Watches Collections

Over the course of its 75 years of production, Yema Watches delivered a number of different collections, each with subbranches, special editions, and heritage models.

  • Yema Diving watches : Superman 500 subbranches, Navygraf Chrono and Heritage Plongee watches.
  • Yema Military watches : Marine Nationale, Forces Sous Marines, and Armee De L'air & De L'espace subbranches.
  • Yema Urban Sport watches : Urban Field and Traveller subbranches
  • Yema Chronograph watches : Alpine Endurance Team, Heritage Chronographs, and Rallygraf Meca-Quartz subbranches
  • Space & Aviation watches that feature three models of Flygraf watches.

Now, let's talk some about the most popular watches of the latest Yema collections representatives.

Yema Superman 500 collection

Dating back to 1963, the original Yema Superman watch quickly made a great impression on the amateur diving community. It went through several successful modifications, keeping its popularity over the years. Nowadays, the Superman 500 collection proudly represents the iconic Yema Superman family.

Since 1970, YEMA's TimeofHeroes has celebrated sportsmen and explorers who achieved remarkable feats under extreme conditions, reflecting the brand's values and history.

The Superman 500 collection of stainless steel watches follows the previous Superman iterations while adding personal touches to the collection. They are a combination of vintage and modern diving watches worlds. Keeping the recognizable traditional design, they add authentic improvements, such as redesigned sapphire crystal, revised bezel locking system, and an in-house caliber.

The New Yema Superman 500 GMT

The New Yema Superman 500 GMT

The Superman 500 models come with a classic "no date" dial design and a GMT one featuring several dial variations to choose from. All Superman 500 variations, just like the name says, come with an improved 500m water resistance rating. Plus, a choice between classic steel and black FKM rubber strap .

The fully polished Yema Superman 500 exudes elegance with a refined look.

The latest addition to the Superman 500 family is the Superman dato watches. These come in two dial color variations, white and green, and both made a grand entry to the horology world early this year.

The Rallygraf Meca-Quartz collection

A lot of time has passed since the original Rallygraf, the first Yema watch inspired by the world of car racing, emerged. A bit less since Formula 1 driver Mario Andretti wore one. During this almost 50-year-long period, a number of models were added to the Rallygraf collection, leading to the latest series wearing its name, The Rallygraf Meca-Quartz collection.

Mario Andretti, a former Italian-American racing driver, is captured in an iconic photo wearing what seems to be a Yema/LeJour Rallye timepiece.

The driving force behind the Chronograph Rallygraf Meca-Quartz collection is Seiko's VK64 hybrid caliber. The trusty Seiko caliber powers all time functions while the mechanical module takes smooth control of the chronograph's function.

The YEMA Rallygraf Meca-Quartz was originally launched back in 1966, marking the debut of the collection.

The entire design of these appealing watches yields tradition: polished stainless steel case, vintage-inspired sub-registers mirror the looks of old race car dashboards, a tachymetric bezel made of mat aluminum, and checkered flags decorate the dials, as they always have done when it comes to Rallygraf watches. The dials come in five different colors, and the watches come equipped with steel mash or dial-matching color leather Rallye-style straps.

The Flygraf collection

Originating back to the 1970s, the Flygraf collection stood the test of time and continues to be one of the collections that epitomes the craftmanship and design diligence of Yema's engineers. The current representative of this iconic collection is the Flygraf Navigator.

Flygraf Navigator honors the recognizable traditional design of Yema Flygraf. ETA Valjoux 7750 caliber drives it with an automatic winding mechanism. Flygraf Navigator features a beveled curved sapphire crystal and a polished stainless steel case. A large diameter (40mm) case, a dial that mirrors an aeronautical instrument board, and a bi-directional rotating bezel make it easy to read and highly useful for pilots.

The YEMA Flygraf Pilot M1 on Pilot's watch strap combines extreme durability for in-flight and field conditions with an elegant look, featuring a leather-coated inner part for added comfort.

Namely, the bezel features a tachymeter scale in the blue part and a secondary scale in the silver one, which enables the calculation of fuel consumption and conversion of nautical miles to kilometers conversions.

The Flygraf Pilot watch, designed in collaboration with professional aerobatic pilot Sammy Mason, draws inspiration from Flieger and WWII military field watches, and with a 316L stainless steel bracelet.

The three available watch straps: stainless steel, RUBBER FKM VITON® BAND, and a perforated black leather strap complete the package.

Yema in-house calibers

After investing substantial funds, time, and expert knowledge in research and development required to produce in-house calibers, Yema management and engineers were rewarded for their efforts. Yema joined the select club of watchmakers that use their own calibers as the power forces behind their watches.

Yema's management and engineers were rewarded for their efforts in developing in-house calibers, as the brand joined the elite group of watchmakers who use their own calibers to power their watches.

There are four Yema in-house calibers currently in use:

  • CALIBRE MANUFACTURE MORTEAU CMM.20 - Olivier Mory developed this micro-rotor caliber, with everything but the regulating organs being designed, developed, and manufactured in their Morteau workshops.
  • MBP1000 - Yema's first mechanical in-house caliber produced in 2011 and sold in over 250 000 units so far.
  • YEMA2000 - Yema released this caliber in 2021 as the second generation of their pioneer MBP1000. Big shoes to fill, but YEMA2000 does it with flying colors, bringing several innovations and improvements to its legendary predecessor.
  • YEMA3000 - It's a cyborg of YEMA2000 as a base and a GMT complication, becoming Yema's first in-house GMT caliber.

Of course, the R&D department in Yema continuously works on new additions, and it's only a matter of time before a new in-house caliber will see the light of day.

Once again, it's beautiful to see how diverse our world of horology truly is. Yema watches stand as a great example of that. Learning about great manufacturers, the watches they produce, and the constant innovations they make is a great privilege and a genuine pleasure.

We can only be grateful and show our support in whatever way we can.

Yachtingrafs with differend brand on the dial.

Some dials are known with different brands printed on.

Interesting one found on eBay in Uruguay – Yachtingraf with brand LIDER. Serial doesn´t fit in the line of 2compax Yachtingrafs.

Lider seems to be a brand of Borel Fiels & Cie. SA from Neuchatel, Switzerland or Montres Leader SA. Keep on research.

About the quality and known issues of Yema Yachtingraf watches

Just my point of view, please. Feel free to send my comments if you know something better. Just in case you looking for one to buy these points may help you. The Yema Yachtingraf watches got mostly problems on:

– pushers (not available, normaly screwed in but mostly glued with metall glue) – lumen (uneven made) and many are bad relumed – cases often polished to death – glasses not to find as NOS, no good substitutes – hands are not to find if there are not the original ones – dials could have paintloss or paint bumpinesses (subdials left too!) – bakelitbezels are mostly losses the paint (but that´s not a yema thing alone) – Alubezels are mostly sold as NOS on ebay from France as 70s, they fit perfect and looks good. You can see if it is a “NOS” one on the green triangle at 12, it looks different to the old ones – numbers on the casebacks: different, earlier seems to be upcounting, later ones got mostly the same numbers, unsure about some numbers too (Yema seems to put the numbers on other models too, still to prove) – unbranded bridges / movements – maybe an advantage for doing the service but you will never know if the movement is original built in the watch, only some LeJour got signed bridges

About the different mounted regattahands on the subdial

Wonder why 50% of all bubbles looks to 12 and the other half looks to 6? Simple explaination but very good usability for different types of the regatta countdown (5/10 or 15 min) you find here at the Club Yema , Jerry found out!

About the movements

Just to know: Valjoux 7730 is the 1966 following movement to the Venus 188 (built from 1948-1966) after the take-over of Venus from Valjoux in 1966. The main difference is the cheaper cam-switching instead of high-end column wheel. Yema was one of the first that uses the Valjoux 7730/7734/7736 as substitute for Valjoux 92/72.

Variants: height: 6,00/6,65 mm | diameter 14 line (31mm) | 45 hrs power reserve | 17 rubins | 28.900 A/h (4Hz) – all variants were built over 2Mio. pieces

7730: basic version, built 1966 – 1973, 175k pieces 7731: like 7730 but with new balance piston 7733: redesigned 7731 in 1969 with different reset hammers 7733S: 7733 with regatta-module disc drive 7734: date wheel, not quickset 7736: chronograph with 12 hrs counter (built 1969-1978) 7737: with 10min regatta countdown (for example in Memosail)

Trying to specify the production years with movements for the Yachtingrafs. Help is needed here for the research.

Regatta Yachttimers

An overview of sailing regatta watches.

The only French brand in this regatta-yachttimer overview is Yema. Founded in 1948 in Besançon (Doubs) by Henry Louis Belmont, the company distinguished itself in the very beginning by creating the first automatic chronometers manufactured entirely in France. The brand became fairly popular in France in the 1960’s and 1970’s with both consumer and military sales, including the watches related to the French space missions!

On March 3, 1967  Henry L. Blum of Montres Yema S.A. filed a patent for a ‘Watch for Yachting and Underwater use’ . You can download the complete Swiss patent (CH 483.047) as a PDF here , or here if you prefer English (USA 3,427,800).

Yema patent US3,427,800 filed by H.L. Blum.

This resulted in the introduction of the Yema Yachtingraf   in 1966. All together 6 different models (7 if you count type 6 in standard or jumbo case as two) of the Yachtingraf  were sold between 1966 and 1970. Type 1 (Valjoux 92), type 2 ( Valjoux 7733 or 7734) and type 3 (Valjoux 7734 with date) have a subdial counting the seconds at 9 o’clock, and an oversized 30 minutes subdial at 3 o’clock, divided into 6 differently coloured segments representing 5 minutes each.

Yema Yachtingraf, 3 versions, 3 different calibers.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf – type 1.

  • Reference: the first model, rare, two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 92 movement.
  • Case size: Ø 38 mm
  • Year: 1966.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf – type 2.

  • Reference: two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7733 / 7734 movement.
  • Year: 1966/1967.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf  – type 3.

  • Reference: two subdials, and a date window at 6 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7734 movement.

Type 4 and 5, the Yachtingraf Croisière models, have an extra third subdial at 6 o’clock with a 12 hour register. By means of a red cross over this subdial it counts double, up to 24 hours. Type 6 has an indicator disk underneath the dial, for an optimum countdown.

And the Yema Yachtingraf versions 4, 5 and 6.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Croissière – type 4.

  • Reference: 92 001L. Silver subdial at 9 o’clock, third subdial at 6 o’clock,
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 72 movement.
  • Year: 1969.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Croissière   – type 5.

  • Reference: 9314. Black subdial at 9 o’clock, third subdial at 6 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7736 movement.
  • Case size: Ø 38 mm.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Régate  – type 6.

  • Reference: with a special indicator disk in stead of a hand.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7733S movement.
  • Case size: either normal case Ø 39 mm or jumbo size Ø 44 mm.
  • Year: 1970.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate was available in two different case sizes, the first one with the black logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 39 mm and with a tachymeter along the outer edge of the dial, and a second version with the blue logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 44 mm. The last one is also referred to as Régate – Jumbo.

How the countdown function works:

Definitely type 6 is the most interesting one. It has a 15 minutes register at 3 o’clock, and a smal indicator disk that rotates under a special cut-out in the dial. The indicator disk moves every 30 seconds, jumping half a minute further to the start of the race.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate has the crown to set the time at 3 o’clock and two pushers for the countdown function. One pusher at 2 o’clock for start/stop, and one pusher at 4 o’clock for reset.

After a reset the countdown subdial shows 1-2-3-4-5 and red in the 6th small window. When the chronograph is activated at the first gunshot the countdown starts and the big white sweep hand is set in motion clockwise. After 30 seconds the indicator disk moves half a minute, and so it does again after 60 seconds, now showing 0-1-2-3-4. A slide bar shows the first minute in blue. After the first 5 minutes of the countdown, when the second gunshot is fired, the 6th window in the dial takes over the countdown: 5 more minutes to go.

Again one minute later, with another 4 more minutes to go, the first window is showing red. Three minutes later, only 1 more minute to go, and 4 windows showing red. Then, as the final gunshot sounds, all 5 windows are red and the 6th window shows 0. Off you go!

Yema advertisement with the Yachtingraf-Croisière.

Variations:

The Yema Yachtingraf’s are unmistakable recognizable by their big colorful minutes countdown subdial, which is also well described in the patent listed above. And although they are not related to Yema in any way, several smaller watch brands have used the same subdial for a Yachting version of their watch. Probably with a license by Yema for the dial layout. The only exeption is the brand Le Jour, which was actually the North American rebranded distributer for Yema in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Here are some examples:

Branded Alsta Le Jour Yachtingraf , Le Jour Yachtingraf   (US version) and Thermidor De Luxe Yachtingraf :

Branded Puerto Azul (without it’s bezel),  Technos Sportsgraph  (with a Landeron 248 movement) and Relide Spacemaster :

Branded Yachting Chronograph  (Valjoux 7733),  Jaques-Droz and Gallet :

Branded Datzward Seamagnum (Valjoux 7730), Lider Yachtingraf   (Valjoux 7733) and La Martine   (Valjoux 7733):

Branded Lunich Watch (Valjoux 7733), Dichi Watch (Valjoux 7730) and Wingo :

x – x – x – x – x – x – x – x – x – x

In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and also Yema decided to invest heavily in the research en development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted among others in the second (quartz) generation of the Yema Yachtingraf   in 1977.

In 1982 John Henry Belmont Jr. takes over as CEO of Yema from his father. But he has other plans with the company, and decided to sell Yema in 1988 to the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation. In 1995 Yema became a subsidiary to the Hattori-Seiko group under the name Yema S.A. It’s obvious that many of the Seiko movements are used in a Yema watch during that period.

In 1992 Yema is sponsoring the French team with skipper and helmsman Marc Pajot as competitor fort her America’s Cup (with yacht Ville de Paris).  For that occasion Yema launches the  America’s Cup France , with a Seiko 8M35 quartz regatta movement.

Different movement with three pushers, at 2, 4 and 8 o’clock:

And a third movement with two pushers at 8 and 10 o’clock:

In 2004 the Yema brand is purchased by its CEO Louis Eric Beckensteiner, with financial help of the French Montres Ambre, a watchmaking and jewelry company. That makes Yema a 100% French watch brand again, with the name being changed into ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’.

For their 70th anniversary Yema announces in 2018 the Heritage collection, to pay tribute to the brand’s most iconic timepieces: a Superman, a Rallygraf, a Yachtingraf and a Flygraf. The Yema Yachtingraf Heritage is an almost identical copy of the Yachtingraf Crossière (type 5) from 1969. The first 1948 watches will be numbered.

Yema Watches Review: Yachtingraf Heritage

Updated: July 16, 2020

Photo of author

Jason Rushin (Guest Contributor)

Vintage is apparently the go-to theme across the entire watch spectrum these days. French brand Yema Watches is no different. Although looking at their current all-retro lineup it appears less as if they’re capitalizing on a trend and more as if they haven’t updated their designs in 50 years.

yema yachtingraf history

Founded in 1948, French watchmaker Henry Louis Belmont built Yema over the next several decades by focusing on the action sports of the day, namely diving, yachting, and racing. The Yema Superman dive watch, launched in 1963, was water resistant to 300 meters and subsequently issued to pilots in the French Air Force. Although, I’m not sure it was a ringing endorsement of French airplanes to issue dive watches to pilots. Nevertheless, Yema went on to produce the first French watch that made it to space and a watch that accompanied adventurer Jean-Louis Etienne on his solo journey to the North Pole.

Over the past 70 years, ownership of Yema shifted hands several times, including being owned by Seiko from 1988 through 2004. The company was eventually acquired by its current parents, Montres Ambre, a French watchmaking and jewelry company.

Yema’s current lineup is decidedly retro, and their Superman model is getting rave reviews from watch sites and collectors alike. But I’m over divers and their Yachtingraf model caught my eye several months ago. The colors drew me to the piece like a kid to rainbow ice cream, especially the ways they incorporated red, white, and blue into the chronograph subdials. It’s a shockingly colorful watch without being cartoony, and the colors do add some actual utility (which would help me justify the purchase to the wife, right..?). I don’t sail nor do I own a yacht, but I did watch the last America’s Cup, so that should qualify me for this purchase, right?

yema yachtingraf history

A pre-holiday deal offered 15% off (over the standard 10% off) and an extra leather strap (also a standard offer), while my annoying chats over several days with their friendly sales team prodded them to throw in a free hat too. Probably just to get me to leave them alone.

So what’s the verdict? Let’s sail in. 🙂

First Impressions:

I’ll have to admit, as soon as I zipped open the faux leather case, I was disappointed. With nearly every watch I’ve lusted over on my giant computer screen many just fall flat when I see them in person. I had the same experience seeing Farer’s chronographs in person for the first time. Mostly it’s the way they seem so much smaller in real life once I strap them to my 7.9” wrist, but it’s also the case proportions, and the Yema’s seemed off, especially the height of the case.

Second was the dial. On first look (and actual size), it was really, really busy. And the details were tiny. Every marking and sub-second indicator was crisp and sharp, but there were a ton of them, especially around the perimeter of the dial.

yema yachtingraf history

The most striking proportional detail of the Yachtingraf’s polished steel case is the diameter-to-height ratio. I’m going to throw “D2H” out there as a new way to gauge the height-width proportions of a watch. For the Yema Yachtingraf, it’s 39 mm wide (same as the vintage model) by 15.35 mm tall (vintage was 14 mm), meaning it has a D2H of 2.54mm and looks like a damn cupcake from the side. It’s seriously tall for its diameter. Very tall. From the side, it’s tallness is also accentuated by what looks to be a six-layer sandwich, from the caseback to the three-layered polishing on the midcase, to the bezel and the sapphire.

yema yachtingraf history

The dial details (what you immediately see) defined my first impressions both good and bad. The Yema Yachtingraf is colorful for sure and the three subdials seem to all be different diameters (although I think only one is larger), but it works. There are blue and red stripes with pie slices and crosses all on a matte black background. It all seems to work with a great nautical flair. For the logo, Yema chose to use their vintage curvy Y instead of their current angular version, keeping with the retro vibe.

yema yachtingraf history

In yachting (AKA sailboat racing) the judge sounds a horn 10 minutes before the start of a race. Since sailboats can’t all just line up at the starting line, it’s a running start, meaning all boats are moving. It takes some strategy and good timing to hit the starting line just after the actual race starts otherwise your boat has to turn around and start again. So when sailors hear the 10 minute horn, they click their regatta timers for the countdown to the start. On the Yema Yachtingraf Heritage, this colorful subdial and it’s double-tipped hand counts from 0 to 10 in one direction (from 12 o’clock) or from 15 to 0 (from 6 o’clock). One tip is straight while the other has an open circle on it to help you differentiate.

In vintage fashion, the 60-minute bezel is super-thin and draws the eye to the dial. It appears to be aluminum or another type metal, with a single lume pip at zero. But it’s bi-directional and does not click. I’ve never had nor heard of a watch where the bezel didn’t click and it took me off guard when I first gave it a spin. It’s tight and I can’t imagine it ever moving around on its own or even from slight bumps. But if I were crashing through the waves on a yacht race around the world, I’d probably not rely on it to stay put. Of course, for my typical needs (timing veggies in the oven) it works just fine.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by This Is My Watch (@this.is.my.watch) on Jan 2, 2019 at 3:08pm PST

Well that’s damn lame. Especially for a watch totally reliant on ”Heritage.” I’ll have to admit, that explanation made me feel stupid, but buyer beware, right? (Note that vintage Yachtingraf models from the 60’s do not have inner bezel markings, so not sure why they felt the need to add them.)

The Movement:

Although most current Yema models have quartz movements, each line seems to have a Heritage automatic model packing an ETA movement. For the Yachtingraf, it’s the ETA Valjoux 7753. It hacks and the chrono flies back nicely, and it beats at 28,800 bph. It’s the same movement used by Hamilton, Tissot, Longines, Victorinox, and others, but the Yema Yachtingraf is at the top end of this movement’s price spectrum.

If you’ve read about this workhorse chrono movement, you’ve come across mentions of its noise. Let me tell you, this thing is noisy. Like LOL loud. One of the first times I set it down on my desk, it sounded like that big rock chasing Indiana Jones in that cave. OK, it wasn’t that loud, but it was loud enough to shock me. I never hear it when it’s on my wrist, but set it down in just the right way and it’s loud.

The Straps:

The Verdict:

I’ve been pulled pretty deep into the watch world over the past year or so. And if you’re like me, you’re bound to have a catch-and-release every so often. This feels like one of those. It’s a great looking watch, minus the tallness, and the colors and retro vibe really sing to me. But something about it just doesn’t feel right. I’ve had other pieces where I didn’t initially like them but they grew on me, so I’ll give it another month or so. But right now, I’m not so sure it’s a keeper.

  • Awesome retro styling, nearly identical to the vintage models.
  • Great colorway with a very unique dial.
  • It’s French, or rather, not Swiss, and that’s somewhat novel.
  • Nice straps.
  • Case is very tall.
  • Tight crown guards make it tough to work crown.
  • Inner bezel markings added just for show.
  • Non-clicking, bi-directional bezel.
  • Noisy movement rotor.
  • Automatics are expensive.

Would I buy it again? Probably not, but would instead buy one of their cheaper (and similar) quartz models. Check out all the Yema Yatchingraf models here – cool to see what’s available across the price spectrum.

Very nice review.

I can’t be the only person who wishes all watch reviews stated the wrist size of the reviewer next to their byline. I’m having a hard time remembering them all!

– Calamitus (6.75″)

Great review. I always wondered why we don’t see more of these. Now I know why.

Thanks @Calamitus and @Greg! Glad you liked the review. 🙂

On wrist size, @Calamitus, yeah, that’s a good point. I know my wrist is on the large size, but it’s also funny for me to see photos where a 40mm watch covers a reviewers entire wrist width. On the other hand, when I wear something smaller than 38mm, it feels like a bracelet instead of a watch…

@Greg, not sure why there aren’t any reviews of the Yema Yachtingrafs out there, but that’s what prompted me to write this one. It’s always helpful to me to read multiple reviews before I consider a piece, so part of my frustration was in buying this one fairly blind. Hope this helps some others make a choice either way.

Nice review. I have an old Yema FR029 that I love, and recently bought a Yema Spacegraf GMT. When it arrived, I was disappointed in how diminutive it looked on wrist in comparision to the site’s photos. Anyhow, after swapping on a Perlon strap, I’ve come to like wearing the watch. The long, vampire fang lugs have grown on me. I’m tempted to get a Superman for the name alone. 🙂 If only the diameter of the case grew by a few millimeters.

Interesting point about the height. Yema website says the Yachtingraf Heritage is 1.35mm taller than the Superman Heritage (15.35mm vs 14mm). They look like they’re using the same case though.

I was also concerned about the height of the Superman, as it’s already taller than a Seiko SKX.

Have you tried on the Superman Heritage by any chance?

Thanks and great review!

Hey @JIN – no, I didn’t try the Superman. I love the look of that piece, too, but just don’t think these live up to the price tag.

Hi Jason, the inner bezel markings are for a type of slide-rule. I don’t know exactly how it works but I believe “M” stands for moyenne, which is French for average. I guess the slide rule allowed for the calculation of average speed? It has been copied from the vintage Yema FlyGraf. It is supposed to have a corresponding outer bezel – which they haven’t included on the new heritage models… Google some images of vintage flygrafs and you will see what I mean. Cheers, Tim

Sorry for the repeat post. I didn’t think the first one worked 🙂

The inner bezel markings are one half of a slide rule. It has been copied from a vintage Flygraf model. They haven’t put the correct corresponding bezel insert on the rotating part to actually be able to use it though…

Hey @Tim, thanks for the comment. I thought the markings were functional as well, but as I said in the review, I emailed them and their answer was basically that they’re just there for show. Disappointing, and I really wanted them to mean something, but I guess not. 🙁

Yema Takes to the Land, Air, and Sea with their New Urban Sport Collection

The concept of “air”, “sea”, “land” watches continues to capture the imagination of enthusiasts. Some even build collections of watches that cover each base. The idea stems from the focused tool watches of yesteryear that were deliberate and intentional in their design languages in order to accomplish very specific goals. Yema leans into this idea in introducing a new trio of watches under their Urban Sport moniker. Within the new line, each watch tackles one component of air, sea, and land, with the Flygraf, Yachtingraf, and Rallygraf, respectively.

yema yachtingraf history

The Flygraf dominates the air and is the punchiest of all three in color scheme. It is marked with an airplane icon at six o’clock and features a combination of inner and outer multifunction bezels for calculating speed, fuel, and other conversions. It has thicker, more legible hands befitting of a pilot’s watch and a brushed black dial designed to pay homage to vintage airplane fuselages. The second hand in particular is a bright orange that matches the inner bezel for maximum contrast. As a whole, the dial is cleaner and simpler, and the hour markers are slightly rounded.

yema yachtingraf history

The Yachtingraf is designed for, you guessed it, yachting. With a gradient dial and thinner hands filled with cream lume, it is the most overtly vintage-inspired of the three. The Yachtingraf has, unsurprisingly, a bi-direcitonal graduated bezel with special 15-minute markings to signal regatta race starts. Its second hand is in silver and features an enlarged arrow – not unlike some GMT hands. The inner chapter ring and hour and minute markers are reminiscent of mid-century divers. If you didn’t know better you could have guessed this was a new old stock diver from the 60s or 70s.

yema yachtingraf history

The Rallygraf was designed for racing in case the twin checkered flags on the dial didn’t make it obvious. This is a callback to the Yema Rallygraf watches of the 1970s, which also featured the same image. Here, a bi-directional tachymeter bezel in conjunction with a fixed reference inner bezel allows for speed calculations. This watch in particular is nearly monochrome – the only pop of color is the red second hand. The blocky hour markers and stark white lume on the hour and minute hands make for a busier, though not clumsy, dial layout.

yema yachtingraf history

All three watches feature the automatically-winding YEMA2000 caliber providing a daily accuracy of +/- 10 seconds under 42 hours of power reserve. All the cases are thoughtfully finished with a combination of brushed topsides and polished bevels. Water resistance is 100m. The Urban Sport line can be configured on model-specific straps, a $829 proposition, while on the stainless steel bracelet they are $890. The Flygraf, Yachtingraf, and Rallygraf are all available now. Learn more at Yema.com .

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière

Specially designed for sailing regattas, the YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière chronograph stands out with its asymmetrical sub-registers in bright colours inspired by the 1960’s legendary chronograph of the same name.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisiere

This new, more refined interpretation features an elegant 38.5mm steel case with twisted lyre lugs and is equipped with Seiko’s VK63 tricompax caliber.

Since the 1960s YEMA has a longstanding tradition in designing purpose-built yachting and regatta chronographs to equip renowned French regatta professionals, as well as regularly acting as official timekeeper of transatlantic solo races like the Route du Rhum.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisiere

Vintage-inspired design, the Yachtingraf Croisière has personality thanks to the “big-eye” oversized sub-register. The emphasis of the minutes counter changes the dynamic of the watch greatly, making it stand out from other chronographs. Specially designed for purpose, it acts as a countdown to the start of a sailing race.

yema yachtingraf history

The dial is the star of the show mixing bright coulours with YEMA’s neo-vintage signature quirk. The dial consists of a primary matte surface with raised steel facetted markers in polished finish elegantly matching the polished facetted hour and minute steel hands.

At nine is the oversized minutes regatta countdown, at six is the sweep seconds hand and at three is the 24h counter in the form of an inverted Swiss-cross.

yema yachtingraf history

The 38.5mm case in 316L stainless steel is thin (10.30mm) and stylish. In the absence of an external bezel, it offers a large dial opening ensuring perfect readability.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisiere

The “twisted” lugs, also known as beveled lyre lugs, invented by the famous watch designer Genta, with their polished-brushed finishes ensure a play of different textures which bring relief and personality to this model.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisiere

The time functions of Seiko’s VK63 hybrid movement are powered by a quartz caliber while the chronograph’s function is controlled by a mechanical module which results in a smooth sweeping second hand movement.

yema yachtingraf history

The Yachtingraf’s steel bracelet is made in Milanese mesh for more flexibility and finesse. The clasp is engraved with YEMA’s historic logo and adjusts quickly and very easily.

yema yachtingraf history

Made by a French manufacture, the grained leather strap with stitches has been specially designed in the Yachtingraf’s matching colours.

The suggested retail price of the YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière is $369 with leather strap and $399 with steel mesh bracelet.

The Surprising Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe for the Brand’s 75th Anniversary

What better way to celebrate an anniversary with friends than by offering them a tourbillon to enjoy.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe

Yema, the French watchmaker , has a history and a notable presence in the world of horology. Established in 1948, Yema is known for its diverse range of timepieces, crafted for various purposes, from diving to racing and aviation . One of the distinctive aspects of Yema watches is their fusion of functionality and style. To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Yema introduces the Yachtingraf model, incorporating the intricate craftsmanship of a tourbillon with the functionality of a tide complication, catering to those who appreciate both technical innovation and practical utility.

yema yachtingraf history

The Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe harmoniously merges sportiness and elegance in its case design, predominantly brushed for a well-balanced aesthetic. With a water resistance of up to 100m, the case comes in steel or bronze, measuring 42.5mm in diameter and 12.3mm thick (14.5mm with the double-domed 2.20mm high sapphire crystal). The unidirectional rotating bezel is equipped with a sapphire crystal insert, graduated in 5-minute increments, and a triangular luminescent marker at 12 o’clock adds a touch of sophistication. The caseback is transparent to demonstrate the Tourbillon Maréographe movement’s architecture and finish.

yema yachtingraf history

The black dial features a sunray finish and Super-LumiNova-coated applied indices. Indices, hands, and other elements are presented in matching colours depending on the case material. The Maréographe complication is positioned above the centre and introduces blue and red hues, with a small hand adorned with Yema’s logo indicating tide cycles. This hand points to high and low tides, making gradual half-revolutions every 6 hours, 12 minutes, and 7.89 seconds, completing a full circle rotation in approximately 12 hours and 25 minutes, passing Descendante – Marée – Montante indications. The tidal cycles, linked to the Moon’s gravitational forces during its rotation around the Earth, are precisely displayed by integrating lunar time to synchronize tides with local time.

Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe - 6

At 6 o’clock, the 60-second tourbillon of the Calibre Manufacture Morteau 30 (CMM.30) takes centre stage, embodying the same robustness that defines the timepiece. Designed by Olivier Mory, a French movement developer in La Chaux-de-Fonds, this calibre incorporates non-magnetic components, such as a non-metallic alloy hairspring, a Glucydur balance wheel with an adjustment mass made in gold, and micro-components manufactured with LiGA technology. This ensures the movement can withstand electromagnetic exposure up to 2,000 Gauss.

yema yachtingraf history

The tourbillon cage bridge, free-sprung balance wheel, and shock absorbers make the CMM.30 impervious to shocks, vibrations, and accelerations up to 5,000 Gs. Adjusted in 6 positions, the CMM.30 guarantees near-chronometer accuracy between –3 and +7 seconds per day, all powered by a single barrel providing 105 hours of reserve. Among other achievements, Olivier Mory was responsible for developing a tourbillon-equipped calibre for the BA111OD brand, offering Swiss-made tourbillon watches at very attractive prices.

yema yachtingraf history

So, it is no surprise that the Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe is priced at EUR 9,990 . Yema will produce steel and bronze editions limited to 75 numbered timepieces each. The Yachtingraf Tourbillon Maréographe is worn on a comfortable strap made from premium rubber, closed by a steel or bronze folding clasp, depending on the case material. Why We Love it

"Here’s one of the coolest watches that you’ve probably never seen."

At least, that's how we started the description for the LAST one of these we offered up for sale, which was just over a year ago. My, how times have changed!

Today, Yachtingrafs are hot to trot, whether branded by Yema or Lejour.  A combination of features, ranging from their colorful dials, 38mm steel cases sans crown guards, rotating outer bezels, high quality Valjoux movements, and obscure nautical functionality clearly add to their appeal. With dimensions and design similar to some of the 60s Chronograph "Greats" (Such as the first execution Heuer Autavia and Ed White Speedmaster), its easy to see why -- when discovered by the masses -- they simply blew up in value!

This particular model is the Yachtingraf Croisière dates to approximately 1969 and is powered by the robust Valjoux 7736 manually-winding movement.  The particular draw of these models was the inclusion of a 12-hour counter at 6:00 with a unique 'cross'-style sub-dial that increases the computing power - an excellent (and rare!) addition to a Yachtingraf.

About the Yema Yachtingraf

Yema is a relatively young brand, founded in France in 1948, but they quickly because extremely popular in their home country and are credited with creating the first automatic chronometers entirely manufactured in France. In 1966, Yema patented a new watch for underwater and yachting use- the Yachtingraf. With a with a 38mm steel case rated to 10ATM, the Yachtingraf occupied a unique place in the market, and quickly caught on with European sailing enthusiasts.

The red, white and blue sub-dial is a classic timer feature, with each segment marking a 5-minute period in the lead up to a regatta. In the 15 minutes leading up to a race, the boat skippers must gather behind the starting line at the first signal, vying with each other for the best position. The color-coding makes the chronograph easy for the skippers to read, letting them know how long until they can cross the start line, thus allowing them to plan the best course and eek out every bit of advantage.

Yema produced six different models of the Yachtingraf from 1966 to 1970, all of which can be read about it more detail over on Heuerchrono, HERE .

COMPLETELY REDESIGNED 30 BAR SLIM CASE

This new 39mm 316L stainless steel case stands out with its perfect proportions and the brushed finishes in stark contrast with the polished chamfers. The original Navygraf steel case has been slimmed down by almost 3mm to achieve just 9.5mm in thickness and accommodate our CMM.20 micro-rotor caliber.

This new steel case preserves a 30 BAR water resistance thanks to a higher-quality sapphire exhibition case-back and an improved screw-down crown.

"MANUFACTURE FRANÇAISE" BLACK LACQUERED DIAL

This new dial now proudly displays all mentions in French and the MANUFACTURE FRANÇAISE signature at 6 o'clock to reflect YEMA's internalization of manufacturing and the local production of components.

The black lacquered dial is produced by carefully coating the dial with layer after layer of lacquer, letting each coat dry in between. The result is an elegant pure black polished glow in perfect harmony with the dazzling black shine of the sapphire bezel.

In addition, the deep black dial accentuates the play of light and magnifies the reflections of the two convex sides of the double-dome sapphire crystal.

NEW FACETTED STEEL HANDS & APPLIED MARKERS

The raised steel indices in polished finish elegantly match the polished facetted hour and minute steel hands, creating a beautiful metal reflection against the pure black dial under certain angles.

The iconic Navygraf sweep second hand preserves its distinct intense yellow colour along with the Navygraf mention on the dial.

All hands are treated with Grade A Super-LumiNova.

SAPPHIRE BEZEL & GRADE A SUPER-LUMINOVA

The rotating bezel stands out both for its elegant minimalist design and its quality of finish. It is entirely made of sapphire and is in perfect harmony with the enamel lacquered dial and the brushed finish of the case. This redesigned bezel features a unidirectional rotation, a 0-60 simplified scale, and a luminescent marker at 12 o'clock treated in Grade A Super-LumiNova, which constitute essential features for professional diving watches.

MORE RESISTANT DOUBLE-DOME SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL

The Navygraf Slim features a 2.00 mm shock-resistant and scratch-resistant double-dome sapphire crystal. Its curved shape gives it a very unique, resolutely vintage look, while offering better readability thanks to its two convex sides as well as increased water resistance up to 30 BAR.

000/200 LIMITED EDITION SAPPHIRE EXHIBITION CASE-BACK

Luxury watches can inspire for a variety of reasons. It’s not only the design and the style of the timepiece but also the technical aspects of a fine timepiece that can really blow watch enthusiasts away. The sapphire exhibition case-back is an elegant feature for those who enjoy taking a look at the inner workings of their mechanical timepieces, in this case it allows wearers to catch a glimpse into the inner intricacies of the Manufacture micro-rotor caliber CMM.20, a rare caliber worthy of showcasing. Each case-back is engraved with a unique serial number, also displayed on the 5-year warranty card, and the corresponding Limited Edition number out of a total of 200 time pieces.

VINTAGE GRAINED LEATHER STRAP

This grained calfskin leather strap in black colour reinforces the elegant neo-vintage aspect of YEMA's time pieces and enhances comfort. This is a tapered strap i.e. it’s wider at the lugs and narrower at the ends of the straps. Tapered straps produce a sleeker and more refined finish by adding a touch of finesse, and make for a more comfortable experience on the wrist.
