On board Baglietto's first 40m Fast Jewel superyacht Panam

Beyond the serious and authoritative exterior of Panam lies a playful, inviting interior – as well as some interesting engineering...

Racing across the waves at 31 knots, the full-custom 40.2 metre Baglietto yacht Panam may be built for speed, but she isn’t your average go-fast superyacht. The owner’s brief was for exterior lines that evoked a sense of speed, and with a vertical bow, gunmetal-grey hull and forward-sloping windows, the tri-deck yacht certainly cuts an aggressive line across the water. Yet while edgy aesthetics and high performance were vital to the brief, so too was creating a yacht that would provide the comfort, livability and spaciousness more of a displacement vessel. The owner wanted to have his cake and eat it too, and Baglietto and designer Francesco Paszkowsk i rose to the occasion.

“The owner’s brief was quite challenging,” Carlo Toracca of Baglietto, who served as Panam ’s project manager, admits. “He asked for a sporty performance yacht that maintained the distinctive design elements of the Baglietto tradition, mixed with spacious volumes, modern exterior styling, bespoke design solutions, close contact to the sea, bright and airy interiors and large outdoor and social spaces.”

Panam builds upon Baglietto and Paszkowski’s  long-time partnership of creating high-performance, aluminum planing-hull yachts. In this vein, the yard and designer had experience in spades, but Panam herself represents something new to the Baglietto line-up. Not based on an existing platform, she is a custom project, featuring a brand-new hull form. “Despite our great expertise in boats of this type, this is a full-custom vessel built on a unique and highly challenging platform, which included a vertical bow,” Toracca says.

The square-shaped stern recalls the classic Baglietto styling, no doubt, but to update the exterior lines, this stocky hull merges with a compact profile, trapezoidal windows, and a fierce vertical bow, all of which provide a modern and dynamic look. “The bow features a step near the waterline, which enhances the sporty and aggressive lines,” Paszkowski says.

Combining a sleek exterior with unusual volume for a boat of this size required a series of carefully thought-out choices in terms of materials. One solution was the extensive use of composite materials, with carbon fibre utilised in places such as the hull doors and mast. Other innovations included a swimming pool in fibreglass on the sundeck and the design of a floodable garage that requires no davit to launch and haul the tender.

Transversally fitted aft of the engine room, the tender garage is noteworthy, especially in this size of yacht, and it accommodates a 5.5 metre tender. “It is partially floodable as the lower edge of the garage’s side shell door lies below the waterline,” Toracca explains. “This allows launching and retrieving the tender in a very simple, safe and fast way as the tender itself enters the garage when still floating and is towed inside by a winch and  a balancing cradle.” Baglietto designed the garage so that it can fill with seawater before the shell door opens and immediately drains when the retrieving operation is complete and the door is closed.

Stepping inside Panam , a bright and airy interior is a cheery contrast to the imposing exterior lines and dark exterior paint. The cosy main salon, adorned in neutral-coloured soft furnishings, is well-lit, thanks to full-height windows and glass sliding doors. Close contact with the sea is maintained thanks to transparent bulwarks on the main deck, allowing unfettered views out of the large windows in the main salon and dining room.

Besides the views outside, what immediately grabs your eye is a living vertical garden, with fern-like plants covering a bulkhead that separates the salon and dining area forward. The installation visually divides the space, but it’s placed centrally so it doesn’t cut off the flow of movement on the main deck. “Architectural solutions that divide the spaces without really separating them allow us to create different locations while avoiding narrow spaces,” Paszkowski says. “On board Panam ,  this functional and aesthetic element might be a marble or a wooden wall – or a vertical garden.” Forward of the dining room is a large pantry area and galley.

The interior was created by Paszkowski’s team in collaboration with Margherita Casprini. They met the owner’s brief for a welcoming and elegantly contemporary interior with the use of woods, polished lacquered panels, grey and neutral tones, and onyx and marble embellishments, all of them chosen by the owner, who was very hands-on in the build of his first custom yacht.

Teak on the exterior decks meets sand oak for the interior floor and striped sand oak on the walls.  A processing technique created a special wave effect in the oak used for the wall of the main deck lobby, which has a varnished metal sheet on the ceiling amplifying a 3D effect, and the owner’s stateroom.

The interior is further detailed in leather, glass and white backlit onyx, used to great effect on the main salon walls on either side of the living-garden wall. The wide selection of marbles includes glossy Persian Gray marble for the shower of the owner’s stateroom and Calacatta for the flooring, while Marfil Cream marble, Eramosa and Coffee Brown marble decorate the lower-deck guest cabins, VIP bathrooms and the dayhead.

The interior living areas take full advantage of the yacht’s nearly 28ft beam, meeting the owner’s request for spacious living in a high-performance yacht. It’s especially noticeable in the forward owner’s stateroom and bath, both stretching across the full beam. A dog-leg wall separates the owner’s office from the suite, ensuring privacy. Another nice feature here is that you can open the windows to allow the fresh sea air to flow through.

In all, following the owner’s wish to stay connected to his environment, the design enhances contact with the sea with open-air areas that include an expansive flybridge, a beach club and the aft section of the main deck. The latter features a custom-made table, planters for live plants and an aft-facing sunpad that might typically be seen on a smaller go-fast boat, evoking Panam ’s speedy nature. Top-of-the-line speakers are hidden in the outdoor spaces, even inside the flagpole.

The flybridge, around 861 square feet in area, is a party deck with multiple lounge areas, a custom-made counter-current pool holding seven tons of water, with a television screen built into its back wall. It has a bar,  a custom marble structure with a sliding countertop, designed as a flexible, space-saving solution. Paszkowski explains this clever feature: “By sliding, the top provides a shelf for people sitting on the stools and reveals the working area for the waiter on the opposite side.  The top also hides a console for the DJ on one side.”

The bridge itself is situated at the mezzanine level,  just a few steps down, and assisting the captain in docking maneuvers are two wing stations.

Much like with the main deck bulwarks, transparent protection rims the outer perimeter of the flybridge and the pool to connect the space with the water beyond. Other open-air areas of note include a lofty bow lounge – which Paszkowski says is his “favourite place among the al fresco spaces we designed” – and the beach club, which opens on three sides with two side-folding balconies in carbon fibre. “It is an excellent solution to provide another huge social area close to the water and to enhance the contact to the sea according to the owner’s wish of enjoying the surrounding environment while living on board,” the designer says. When the stern platform and side balconies are open, the total beach club area is 459 square feet.

This layout demanded innovative thinking and engineering. The central engine room was moved forward to make room for the large beach club and the semi-floodable garage. Although a triple-waterjet propulsion system made it easier to control noise and vibrations, Panam ’s layout necessitated shaft lines that are 27.7 metre long from the transom to the gearbox flange.

“Building Panam has been a very challenging project for Baglietto, in both the design and technical aspects, but the final result has made everybody at the shipyard very proud,” Toracca says. “The owner was very happy and excited as well. Being a full-custom project, Panam is the realisation of his yachting dreams.”

Baglietto 40m Superyacht Panam

In a crisp, 40-meter profile, Baglietto’s Panam proves a quick, smooth study from bow to stern. Announcing with authority and speed, Panam also embraces comfort and luxury.The fifth custom yacht was by CCN is in the Fuoriserie collection of bespoke projects from this Italian yard; Panam’s aggressive design is a stylish entertainer deserving of industry encomia.

A lean and nimble 39.80 meter/130’7” planning yacht from the hand of Francesco Paszkowski Design, Panam owns an 8.40 meter/27’7” beam requiring a relatively shallow 2 meter/6’5” draft. Panam’s aluminum and magnesium alloy hull and superstructure are keys to her sub-400 GT status.

Naval architecture by Baglietto, gave Panam accommodations for twelve guests served by five crew. Interiors overseen by Paszkowski in cooperation with Margherita Casprini are in high complement to the clean, modern design.

Powered by a trio of MTU 16V M96L 2000kW/2650 hp engines, each connected to one of three Rolls Royce KaMeWa waterjets, Panam sports a cruising speed of 25 knots, a top speed of 31 knots, and a range of 1800 nm at 12 knots. Equipped with 30,000 L/7925 US gal fuel and 5,000 L/1320 US gal water storage, she also carries two large generators, and two watermakers.

Standout features include counterflow pool, major sound system components throughout, drop-down balconies adjacent to a beach club, Hammam, a floodable launch tender garage, and automotive-inspired details in grills, chrome, and leather.

The Owner’s Brief

Built for a youthful owner with a high-powered lifestyle, the brief was exactly that: short and simple. Instructions to Francesco Paszkowski read clearly, asking for a vigorous, powerful yacht. That is where Paszkowski’s team of polymaths drew together in an application of talent, intuition, technology, and taste, to create a yacht delivering more than the sum of its parts.

Francesco was born in Milan, instilling the Italian passion for great design early on. He studied architecture, but later focused on his passion for building boats. Opening his own studio in Florence in 1990, he went on to design for the world’s most celebrated shipyards. Now, with three decades of expertise and an enviable team of designers and architects, Paszkowski has become one of the preeminent names in yacht design. The addition of Margherita Casprini to the design team added an impressive talent to the Baglietto brand.

Baglietto Blue

Taking Paszkowsi’s passion to the task of building the vision was a story that began over 160 years ago in Italy. Baglietto calls it, simply, the Blueness.

Baglietto 40m Panam, truly superfast

Panam is a custom-built yacht developed on the superfast platform created by Baglietto and Francesco Paszkowski, and is a worthy reflection of that name

Baglietto was founded 161 years ago and is still a brand of reference on the international yachting scene thanks to its ability to meet the requirements of buyers with different needs and with very different visions of what going out to sea means. In recent years the yard has produced interesting yachts, including ones that are very different from one another, and the two very new yachts presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival and the Monaco Yacht Show, the Panam and the Club M , are proof of that.

Nowadays the yard produces motor yachts of between 40 and 65 metres – with nine currently under construction in the two yards at La Spezia and Massa – and offers a dozen different models. These are subdivided into three ranges designed by Francesco Paszkowski , as well as the DOM line by Stefano Vafiadis . The Panam is part of the Superfast line, which can do over thirty knots. Those figures are rather against the general trend in the market, which is increasingly going towards yachts with longer range, which are not so fast but use less fuel. But it is clear that there are still buyers who want to charge across the waves and get to their destination quickly, and Baglietto has managed to fully cater to these wishes. The yard is also involved in applying new technologies to make yachts increasingly efficient, as company CEO Diego Michele Deprati said in an interview with Barche.

The galley is fitted out to serve a large number of guests and boasts the best professional equipment. The boat is laid out with a large lounge area on the main deck, which is separated from the dining area by a wall of plants.

THE INTERIORS, WHICH ARE COHERENT WITH THE DESIGN OF THE EXTERIORS, ARE IN A CONTEMPORARY STYLE, ELEGANT AND WELCOMING, AND FAVOUR THE USE OF A FEW MATERIALS COMBINED DIFFERENTLY IN THE VARIOUS ROOMS.

The yard wants to concentrate on technological innovation, rather than on size and speed : «We want to achieve a high technological level and, in part because of that, our output won’t exceed five to six units a year. The time has come to take a step forward. The firm is concentrating a lot of its energy on the challenge from hybrid and hydrogen propulsion. We already have a 52-metre under construction which is being made with completely hybrid propulsion. CCN’s Vanadis is also the first Italian boat with certified hybrid power. All of our platforms are set up for catalytic reduction, as is the hybrid».

But let’s get back to Panam . Of Baglietto’s new forty-metre, Francesco Paszkowski said the following : « The starting point was that we wanted to make a yacht with a sporty character. To meet the wishes of young owners, we created a streamlined wedge-shaped profile, which was close to the water, with a powerful stern and vertical bow. That was combined with large, dark windows that are geometrically shaped to produce, from the very first look, an impression of speed which is then confirmed by the construction. Another key point from the design process is the feeling of contact with the sea, a quality that is increasingly sought after nowadays. Luminosity in the interiors comes from large windows, transparent surfaces of the gunwale alongside the living room on the main deck and along the edge of the flying bridge, and the amazing spaciousness of the external areas, from the flying bridge to the beach club».

The sanded oak floors have warm, clear wood and soft grey and turtle dove tones, as does the striped oak wall covering, while leather and glass details on shelves, tops and cupboard doors are used to complete the furnishing.

The yacht has two main decks, plus a half deck where the steering position has been located . There is also a very extensive flying bridge with direct access to the helm. In the layout of the main deck, Paszkowski has used the 8.42m beam to create a large lounge divided into two interconnecting areas: the living room is aft, and is divided from the dining area to the fore by a wall covered with dry plants, a vertical garden that requires no maintenance but has a very strong decorative effect. The lounge is also very luminous, not least thanks to the large French window which opens onto the external starboard corridor. The bulwark alongside the lounge is made from glass so, as well as allowing light through, it means you can admire the view while comfortably sitting on the sofa or at the table. As we move further forward, to port there is a large pantry that is linked to the dining area and – by a staircase for the crew – to the service area below.

And on the lower deck, there is the crew’s dinette and a large kitchen . The pantry is also connected to the helm area, which is located on an intermediate deck. Attached to the pantry there is a comfortable room/cupboard for crockery and glassware, which is carefully laid out on easily-accessible shelves. Staying on the main deck, as well as a small lobby area with a day head, to starboard you reach an L-shaped passage, which gives access to the guest cabins and the master suite where another corridor, which is fitted with wardrobes, gives access to the bedroom. The cabin itself is roomy and luminous and is equipped with a bathroom with twin washbasins, separate WCs and a shower cubicle/turkish bath.

The full beam master cabin has a bathroom with a Turkish bath. Two electric windows open to give a panoramic view.

The lower deck has four guest cabins, two double rooms with beds athwartship, and two twin rooms . And also, on this deck, there are three cabins for the five crew members. A sliding door in the hallway between the cabins gives direct access to the crew to the guest area to make service easier.

THE 65-SQUARE METRE FLYBRIDGE FEATURES A COUNTER CURRENT SWIMMING POOL, A BAR AND A SUNBATHING AREA.

The areas available for use by the guests are completed by the large external areas, amongst which the 65-square metre flying bridge stands out . It has a conversation area protected by a large hardtop, a bar, sun pad and a customised swimming pool fitted with an endless pool jet current device. On the short side of the pool a large television has been included that can be enjoyed while sitting on the sofas. To help get more direct contact with the sea, aft on the lower deck there is a beach club that opens up on three sides, with a swimming platform that has a convertible ladder to help get into and out of the water. The interiors, which have been designed by the Paszkowski Studio in partnership with Margherita Casprini , have a classic, contemporary style, featuring neutral colours and materials that have been combined differently to get a notable stylistic coherence, without ever descending into monotony.

The colour palette doesn’t deviate from grey and turtle dove, and even the kinds of marble used in the bathrooms – Cappuccino, Calacatta, Persian Grey, Marfil Cream, Coffee Brown and Eramosa – repeat the same tones. The furniture tops, shelves and doors for the cupboards and lockers are finished in refined details in leather. Much of the furniture was designed by the Paszkowski Studio, but the designer has also introduced some pieces produced by leading Italian companies. These include the sofas, dining table chairs and the coffee tables by Minotti, the lounge armchairs by Fendi and the desk in the master suite by Armani Casa.

Emphasis is placed on contact with the sea, which is helped by the large windows and functional beach club.

Panam is fitted with three MTU engines that turn out around 2,000 kW each and which work together with the KaMeWa hydro jets . Despite displacing 264 tonnes semi laden, this figuration still lets it shoot across the waves at over thirty knots. The large motors are housed in a compact engine room, fitted with a separate control room. Between the engine room and the beach club a semi-floodable garage has been included, which can take a 17-foot tender and which opens on the starboard side. Amongst yachts of its type, Panam is a yacht with strong character, which fully reflects the Baglietto DNA.

The superyacht was designed to meet the wishes of the buyer, who wanted to create a boat with a very sporty personality.
