The Untold Truth Of Below Deck's Captain Lee

Below Deck's Captain Lee Rosbach

He's the unlikely star of a hit reality show, but fame hasn't changed Harold Lee Rosbach  — better known to " Below Deck " viewers as Captain Lee — one little bit. The Michigan native's no-nonsense attitude and snappy one-liners made him an instant hit with fans of the Bravo series, which follows the captain and his crew as they attempt to keep a luxury yacht full of rich passengers running smoothly. The pilot episode received a poor write-up in The New York Times when it aired in 2013, but with exotic locations and regular drama guaranteed, "Below Deck" would go on to become the most-watched series on Bravo. In 2021, it was nominated for its first Emmys, a huge moment for Rosbach. "Being part of 'Below Deck' since the beginning has been a wild ride that has been filled with many surprises," he said in a statement (per Variety ). "Finding out today that we received two Emmy nominations is the most exciting surprise yet."

The so-called Stud of the Sea is in his 70s now, yet, despite some recent health challenges, he shows no signs of slowing down. He's rubbished rumors that he's thinking about quitting the show ("I'm still having way too much fun," he told Metro ahead of the "Below Deck" Season 9 premiere), which simply wouldn't be the same without him. How does he stay in such good shape? Was he always a sailor? And what does he really think of that nickname? This is the untold truth of "Below Deck" star Captain Lee.

He used to own several restaurants

Captain Lee Rosbach wearing glasses

Before he was the Stud of the Sea, Lee Rosbach was a restaurateur who owned a number of eateries across the country. "I had restaurants in Indiana, Georgia, and Florida," he told the Midland Daily News . He fell in love with the water when he moved to Florida and would later open up another restaurant in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory located southeast of the Bahamas. Staring out at the pristine ocean just wasn't enough for him, however. "It got to the point that I wanted to spend more time on boats than in the restaurant," he recalled. When he found himself needing some extra cash, he decided to earn it at sea.

"I took a job delivering a sailboat to the British Virgin Islands," the "Below Deck" star told GQ . "I was supposed to get paid $50 a day as a deckhand, and I was seasick the whole time. The guy screwed me out of half my pay, so I was actually working for $25 a day." The low pay and the seasickness — which stopped after about a year of being at sea, he revealed — was ultimately worth it. The trip confirmed to him that he was a sailor at heart, and he decided a career change was in order. "When I got back, my wife and I moved back to the United States and saved enough money so I could pursue my captain's career in Florida," he recalled.

Captain Lee wasn't supposed to be on the show

Captain Lee Rosbach wearing bowtie

Believe it or not, Captain Lee wasn't part of Bravo's plans when they set about making the first season of "Below Deck." By this point in time, Rosbach had obtained his captain's license ( he was 35 when he passed the test, meaning he's been a captain for more than half of his life) and was happily running a luxury yacht called Cuor di Lione. His path would be forever altered when he got a call from the yacht's owner one day. "He said there's a TV network that wants to charter the boat for eight weeks," Lee told Boat International . "They've got their own captain and crew and all you need to do is drop the boat off in St. Maarten." Rosbach delivered the boat to St. Maarten as planned, but there was a big problem when he got there.

The captain that Bravo execs had lined up decided to pull out of the show at the last minute, and the producers on location found themselves in quite the tight spot. The original captain's loss would be Rosbach's gain, as he recalled during an interview on " The Ellen DeGeneres Show ." "They had a conundrum because we were already late into the game," the straight-talking reality star said, "and they needed a captain, so they said, 'Well, I guess we'll use the old guy.'" Little did they know that "the old guy" would go on to become the show's main attraction.

He used to be an amateur boxer

Captain Lee Rosbach frowning

One thing that "Below Deck" viewers can't help but notice is that Captain Lee is in remarkable shape for a man of his age. You might think that his physique comes from years of tying knots and hoisting sails, but he actually started packing on the muscle long before he took to the seas. "I've always been in pretty good shape," he told  GQ . "I've been a gym rat my whole life." Rosbach revealed to the magazine that he had a spell as an amateur boxer in his early 20s, going all the way to "the state finals in Michigan" one year. "I promised myself I'd fight until I lost, which happened at the state finals," he said. "Guy really rung my bell. I lost TKO."

His defeat in the ring didn't dampen Rosbach's enthusiasm for the gym. In fact, he started hitting the weights even harder when he began his career as a restaurateur. "I changed my workout when we moved out to Indiana and got our first restaurant, and I started going to a gym where a lot of the athletes from Notre Dame went," he explained. "Some of the guys from the football team would come in, and they're just beasts. " Those who have gotten to know Captain Lee on "Below Deck" won't be surprised to learn that he became friendly with the young football stars. "I used to work out with them all the time," he revealed.

Captain Lee still works out every day

Captain Lee Rosbach in the gym

Despite being in his 70s, Captain Lee is still the same " gym rat " he was all those years ago. He lifted the lid on his workout routine during his candid GQ  interview, telling the men's mag that he's "usually at the gym for two hours" every single day. "I do a lot of repetitions without really heavy weights," he explained. "I'll switch it up every couple of weeks so that my muscles don't remember the same routine." Of course, this only applies when the captain is at home in Florida and he can frequent a fully functional gym — so what does he do when he's at sea? "It depends on the boat," he said. "If there isn't a gym, I'll take some weights with me or I'll buy some when we're docked. If there's a local gym, I'll hit that."

When he's really pressed for time, Rosbach will break out the resistance bands that he travels with and do his workout up on deck at first light. "I like working out outside," he explained. "It just really puts you in a great frame of mind to start your day." Glimpses of the captain's sunrise workouts are rare, but that's not for a lack of trying on the show's part. According to Rosbach, he often rounds on the camera crew when they try to film him in action. "They're like, 'Cap, I'm just doing my job!' I'm, like, 'Get the f*** outta here!'"

The seafarer insists the show isn't scripted

Tanned Captain Lee smiling

It's no secret that many reality TV shows are partly (or even fully) scripted , but that doesn't appear to be the case with "Below Deck." In 2014, Captain Lee told the Midland Daily News : "I still run the boat the same way, regardless if it is on TV or not." When he sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Men's Health in 2020, Rosbach confirmed that this was still the case. "I don't know if anybody could make this stuff up," he said. "The cameras start rolling at 6:30 in the morning and they don't stop until the last person goes to bed. Static cameras are rolling all the time. So whatever happens, happens. There's no lack of content."

When asked about ex-cast member Caroline Bedol (who called the show "heavily manipulated" in a Reddit AMA ), the captain got a little salty, putting it down to "people trying to maintain their relevancy for longer than they should be." The former third stew made it clear that she has a pretty low opinion of Rosbach following her unceremonious exit in Season 6 (she left halfway through the charter after accusing colleagues of bullying ), telling Reddit that he has "a broken moral compass." That's not how one of the charter guests from that season remembers him, however. "Captain Lee is every bit as funny, charming, and smart as he appears on the show," Linda P. Jones wrote in a blog post . "He's the real deal."

His studly nickname makes him blush

Captain Lee Rosbach smiling

Captain Lee got his catchy nickname in 2015 when a teaser trailer for "Below Deck" Season 3 referred to him as the Stud of the Sea for the first time. The name stuck, but Rosbach would later reveal that he didn't know what was happening when the camera crew arrived to film the now-iconic clip. "I had no idea they were going to do this," he told Lifestyle Magazine (via Showbiz Cheat Sheet ). "A special team came down and did some camera shots. The next thing you know I'm looking at the teaser, and they are talking about the Stud of the Sea. I said to them, 'Oh, someone is going to pay for this!'" The show's executive producer loved the new name, however, and so did the charter guests.

Writing about her experience on "Below Deck," Linda P. Jones revealed that she made Rosbach blush when she called him by his nickname at dinner one evening. "I've seen every 'Below Deck' show ... so I had to tease him and call him the Stud of the Sea," she said on her blog . "I looked back a minute later and he had put his white linen napkin over his head to hide his red face!" This isn't an unusual reaction from the captain, who finds the whole thing "kind of embarrassing," he told  GQ . "It's flattering, but I don't do anything special," he added. "I'm just a guy who gets filmed doing his job."

Captain Lee's wife keeps him grounded

Below Deck's Captain Lee Rosbach with wife

Even after he said yes to appearing on "Below Deck," Captain Lee had no idea that he was destined to become a reality TV star. When the "Stud of the Sea" teaser went viral ahead of Season 3, he quickly realized just how " unprepared  for" fame he was. "No one gives you a playbook to be a celebrity all of a sudden," Rosbach told Lifestyle Magazine (via Showbiz Cheat Sheet ). He went on to reveal that he's often stopped by fans these days ("It doesn't help that he has 'Capt. Lee' as his license plate," his wife joked), but he really doesn't mind posing for pictures with them. In fact, he rather enjoys it. "My philosophy is that if you can put a smile on someone's face and it takes 10 or 15 seconds of your time, why wouldn't you do that?"

Rosbach seems to cherish his belated fame, but has it gone to his head at all? He admits that it's easy to get carried away when you're in front of the cameras, but at the end of the day, he has a job to do. "If I find myself drifting in that direction, I kind of slap myself upside the head and say, 'Get a grip!'" the captain told  GQ . He revealed to the men's mag that his wife, Mary Anne, helps him to "stay grounded," adding, "I talk to her every day. And before wireless cellular, it used to get quite expensive."

His son died of an accidental overdose

Captain Lee Rosbach looking upset

Captain Lee and his wife Mary Anne have had five children together: a daughter and four sons. In 2019, their son Josh (the youngest of the four boys), died from an accidental drug overdose. "After a twenty-year struggle, he finally succumbed to the demons he fought so long and so hard," Rosbach tweeted . Josh was 42.

In 2020, Rosbach shared an Instagram  photo of his tattoo tribute to his late son: Josh's likeness inked on his chest. And when he appeared on " The Ellen DeGeneres Show " the following year, Rosbach revealed why he decided to discuss his son's death on "Below Deck," explaining that he felt the need to speak up about the way addiction is viewed in America. "They don't realize that addicts aren't the dregs of society," he said. "It crosses all social boundaries: it doesn't make any difference how much money you have or you don't have."

According to the captain, drug addiction has become "the elephant in the room that nobody wants to confront," and he wants to be the man to finally do something about it. "I don't believe in the last two years I've talked with anyone that doesn't know of someone personally that has paid a steep price for this opioid crisis we have, and nobody says anything about it," Rosbach stated. "Somebody has to step up." In the meantime, all he can do is take life "one day at a time" as he continues to deal with the loss.

The captain is opening a rehab center at sea

When he appeared as a guest on Bravo's " Watch What Happens Live " in 2021, Captain Lee told host Andy Cohen that he planned on honoring his late son by opening a rehab center — at sea. The silver-haired skipper revealed that the facility will be on a 470-foot barge out in the water and will be able to accommodate up to "200 patients at a time." It's not just about kicking the drugs, however. "We're also converting it into a vocational rehabilitation center so that not only do we try to get them clean, but we try to get them back into the mainstream of the community with an ability to make a living," Rosbach explained.

The reality star has even been to Congress to call for more help in dealing with what he's called "the worsening opioid/fentanyl crisis," he revealed in an Instagram  post. He was able to address the Bipartisan Addiction and Mental Health Task Force personally, telling them the tragic story of his son and urging them to act before more parents had to go through the same thing he and his wife did. "The hole in your heart's never gonna go away — you can't replace it with anything else," Rosbach said on " The Ellen DeGeneres Show ." "We're not generally constructed to bury our children. From the time you're born, you grow old and your parents pass away. It's not the other way around. And when that happens, it's completely devastating."

Charter guest Delores never apologized to him

Captain Lee Rosbach looking contemplative

Captain Lee has had to deal with some pretty out-there requests from his guests during his time. "This wasn't on the show, but we had to have a suckling pig flown from New Zealand [to Baltimore]," he told Men's Health . "Like anything else that billionaires want, when they want it, they want it. They throw some money at it and you make it work." Money doesn't solve every problem, however. In one of the most famous "Below Deck" moments to date, Captain Lee lost his rag when a drunk guest ignored his rules and went swimming at night, something he described as "the ultimate f*** you to the captain."

Rosbach rounded on Delores Flora (who dived into the water while still wearing her evening dress), reminding her that it wasn't safe. When she told the captain that she had "paid a lot of money" for the trip, he fired back with, "I don't give a s*** what you paid!" Rosbach later confirmed on Twitter that Flora never said sorry for her behavior. When she appeared on " Watch What Happens Live " to discuss the incident, she said that she doesn't feel like she owes the captain any apologies. "You know, the water was just beautiful," she told Andy Cohen . "I do have a problem with authority, and the first time I remember getting in trouble was for jumping in the deep end of a pool, so I've always had a problem with jumping in the water."

Captain Lee responds to Below Deck's racial slur controversy

Captain Lee frowning while speaking

"Below Deck" hit the headlines in December 2021 when chief stewardess Heather Chase used the N-word twice during an episode. A clip from the crew's drunken night out showed Chase (who is white) repeating the word after Black deckhand Rayna Lindsey said it, and she appeared to use it again while rapping in front of Lindsey later that evening, which prompted a response. "You cannot say n****, you're white as f***," Lindsey said . "It's not 2002 anymore, you know?" Fans had little sympathy for Chase after she stormed off to bed complaining about being called out, saying, "It just made me feel bad." Lindsey addressed her colleague's use of the racial slur while speaking to the cameras the following morning. "It hurts me," she said, per E! News . "It hurts my heart. It hurts everything in me."

When Captain Lee saw the episode for the first time, he went straight to his personal blog and penned a scathing post. "I was truly disgusted by some words used in this week's episode that I will not repeat," Rosbach wrote . "I find them despicable. The word I heard used casually on this week's episode is not one I tolerate in any way shape or form on my boat." Chase was also watching the episode, and she was embarrassed by her behavior. "While I apologized to Rayna throughout the season, I cannot express enough how remorseful I am," she said in an Instagram  post.

Captain Lee Rosbach's Below Deck portrait

He's the blueprint. Captain Lee Rosbach, a.k.a. the "Stud of the Sea," joined the Below Deck  family during Season 1 of the franchise's original series in 2013. Since then, he's been a mainstay on the show, having  only missed a few charters .

Captain Lee has been in the yachting world for more than three decades and has even written a book  — 2018's Running Against the Tide —  on the subject. Born and raised in (landlocked) Michigan, Lee fell in love with the sea while managing restaurants in Turks & Caicos. After a stint as a mate on a sailboat, he was fully sold and obtained his captain's license at age 35.

“Deciding to become a yacht captain has been the best decision I’ve ever made in my life,” Lee  said during the March 2023 Season 10 finale .

Outside of work, Captain Lee has been happily married for almost five decades . When asked for his favorite Below Deck memory during his March 2023 WWHL  appearance, he mentioned a moment that had to do with both of his loves: His wife Mary Anne and the water. During Season 5, Mary Anne (with whom he shares five children) made a guest appearance on the show.

"It was when I got to see my bride walking down the dock," Lee said. "To have Mary Anne come out and give me just a little bit of a respite from the grind, is really a pleasure."

Daily Dish Captain Mark Howard Tributes

Before there was Captain Sandy, there was Captain Mark Howard . Captain Mark led the very first season of  Below Deck Med , which aired in 2016.

Another Michigan-born yachtie (maybe there's something in that Great Lakes water?), Captain Mark had racked up nearly 30 years of experience on both private and charter boats before he passed away in late 2021 .

“Our thoughts and sincerest sympathies are with the family and friends of the respected Captain Mark Howard," Bravo said in a statement at the time. "As the captain of the first season of Below Deck Med , he will always be remembered for his many contributions and mentorship and will forever remain part of the Bravo family.”

Seasons 2-7: Sandy Yawn

Captain Sandy  joined the Below Deck ranks during the second season of Below Deck Mediterranean and has been a stalwart ever since. In her first six seasons of  BDM , the captain sailed her charters through the waters of Greece, Croatia, Italy, France, Spain, and Malta, while also finding time to step in for Captain Lee  while he dealt with health issues during Season 10 of the original  Below Deck .

Do the Below Deck Captains Know Each Other? Lee and Sandy Actually Go Way Back

“Captain Lee and I go way back, so when I heard about Captain Lee’s situation, I felt terrible,” Captain Sandy told the  Below Deck  cameras during Season 10 Episode 5. “Who wants to leave because you can’t physically do it? My hope is that Captain Lee feels supported. I’m here to take care of his boat and his crew until he comes back.”

Always the professional, Captain Sandy has over three decades of yachting experience under her belt. A Florida native, she knew she wanted her career to revolve around the ocean from an early age. When she learned yachting was a male-dominated field, she simply pushed forward. And she hasn't stopped: In March 2023, she launched her own organization , Captain Sandy's Charities, to support women's maritime and environmental education and employment opportunities.

Off the water and outside of her charity work, Sandy has a longtime girlfriend , gospel singer  Leah Shafer . The pair met in 2018.

Long before Below Deck Sailing Yacht premiered in 2020, Montreal native Captain Glenn  was captaining the elegant Parsifal III .

No stranger to long-term relationships (seriously, he's been captain of Parsifal III for 13+ years), Captain Glenn has been with his  girlfriend , Danelis “Dani” Jimenez, for about four and a half years . Unsurprisingly, the duo are serious globetrotters.

"I just dropped [Dani] at the airport in Madrid. We’ve been, like I’ve said, traveling around southern Spain for the last week or so, 10 days maybe,” Glenn told  The Daily Dish in May 2023. “She has to shoot back home. We live in Palma de Mallorca, which is almost like a bus ride from Madrid… We’re planning to head up to Andorra, which is in the mountain range between Northern Spain and France, and hopefully get a little bit of snowboarding in before the snow disappears for this winter. Right after that, we’re going back to the boat in Greece, and we’ll probably cruise around for a few weeks, and then I’ll have to go back to work for the summer on  Parsifal  somewhere in the Mediterranean doing charters.”

During the second season of Below Deck Down Under , Captain Jason and his crew found themselves on a boat built in the ’70s .

“I walked onto the boat, said ‘What the hell is going on?’ and then the season ended,” Jason joked in a July 2023 conversation with the Daily Dish .

The Aussie captain  has a daughter , Saskia, who he loves to spend time with when he's not working.

"Being away from her hurts every day," he said in a Season 1 Episode 1 interview. "There's no words for how much I love my daughter. Everything's about her."

Below Deck Adventure Season 1 Headshot Captain Kerry Titheradge

Sailing crews and guests throughout the majestic fjords of Norway, Captain Kerry Titheradge  rounds out the Below Deck captains as the newest addition to the franchise.

The father of two has worked on boats for 30 years and has spent almost two decades yachting, with experience in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Pacific Northwest, and more. According to Captain Kerry, he made the decision to join the Below Deck  family after reaching out to longtime friend Captain Lee  to see if he had any regrets about the show.

“When it came, the opportunity to do this, I gave Lee a call and asked him would he do it again if he had to redo his time?” Kerry said during BravoCon 2022 . “He said, 'One hundred percent.'”

Since 2013, Below Deck has been captivating TV audiences across the globe by offering a voyeuristic peek into life on board multi-million dollar luxury charter yachts . Taking readers behind the scenes, YachtCharterFleet identifies the yachts featured on the show, as well as those which have appeared on the celebrated spin-off series Below Deck: Mediterranean , Below Deck: Sailing , Below Deck: Down Under and the latest iteration, Below Deck: Adventure .

Bravo’s hit reality TV series Below Deck chronicles the lives of crew members who work and reside aboard a luxury yacht during the charter season.

Each season features a different crew configuration, and the episodes show how the crew members interact and deal with personal issues alongside their working lives. The seasons are filmed over six weeks, with every episode featuring a new group of charter guests.

Getting even closer to these Below Deck superstars, we take a look at each of the stand-out features of every yacht that has appeared on the show.

Below Deck (US)

Many crew members are recurring on the show;  the longest-standing is Captain Lee Rosbach, who been on the show since 2013. A fan favourite, he has been at the helm of every yacht on Below Deck and seen a number of different crew formations.

The latest Below Deck season 10 is rumoured to be his final swan song, although his legacy on the show is such that whoever replaces him will have very big shoes to fill.

Among the crew members, Chief Stewardess Kate Chastain was an integral member of the team from season two to season seven. Alongside her, Chef Ben Robinson was a permanent fixture of the crew from season one to season four, before stepping out for season five.

Throughout the course of the show, the yachts have played an important role.

Hiring a Below Deck yacht will cost from €140,000 per week - and that price doesn't include expenses such as fuel. While some of the yachts were given an alias over the course of filming, their real names can now be revealed below; as well as the exact cost to rent them.

IONIAN PRINCESS

Ionain Princess season 1 Below Deck Mediterranean

Premiering on 3 May 2016, the very first season of Below Deck: Mediterranean , a spin-off of the increasingly popular franchise, took to viewers' screens. This time the ‘yachties’ took care of their guests onboard the motor yacht IONIAN PRINCESS  in the Mediterranean  destination of Greece .

The starring yacht IONIAN PRINCESS was delivered from Christensen in 2005 and was later refit in 2016 and again in 2021. Truly opulent, she bears interiors that are sleekly finished with a range of warmly toned woods and plenty of comfortable furnishings. She also boasts one of the largest sundecks for a yacht of her size.

Below Deck: Mediterranean Season 1 yacht IONIAN PRINCESS is not currently available for private yacht charter vacations.

Below Deck: Sailing Yacht

This is the first time the Below Deck franchise branched away from gleaming motor yachts, with the various weather issues that sailing yachts have to contend with adding even more drama and excitement.

The design of luxury sailing yachts  also creates far more confined crew areas than we are used to seeing on the original Below Deck . In general, sailing yachts tend to feature smaller galleys, compact stew stations and cramped crew quarters which are in closer proximity to the guests’ living areas, putting crew under increased pressure to deliver their signature silver service.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 3

In addition, deck crew are placed in a far more demanding role, with sailing yachts requiring increased accuracy and precision to safely maneuver and plenty of deck duties taking place in the midst of guest areas.

Below Deck Shocker: Captain Lee Rosbach Announces He's Leaving the Boat

Below deck 's longtime captain lee rosbach stunned his crew by revealing he's leaving the mega yacht mid-season because of an ongoing health issue on the bravo series' dec. 12 episode..

Captain Lee Rosbach 's time aboard the St. David is ending early

The beloved Below Deck star shocked his crew on the Bravo series' Dec. 12 episode by announcing he's leaving the mega yacht mid-season. Captain Lee's tough decision came amid an ongoing nerve problem affecting his ability to walk.

"My injury is getting worse," he shared in a confessional. "The left side of my body, I don't feel anything. I expected a lot more progress than I'm experiencing and the most frustrating part about it is I can't do a goddamn thing about it. It's hard."

The health issue forced Lee to use crutches to get around the boat, which also affected his ability to do his job.

"One of my biggest problems now is I'm not able to observe," he explained. "I don't know who's doing what, it's my job."

"I owe it to my crew to do right by them," he continued. "They expect that out of me. There comes a point if a captain is really being objective, he should be putting the best interests of his crew first."

Once the teamed wrapped another successful charter hosting a group of female doctors, Lee gathered his crew to update them on his health.

"As you guys know I've been struggling with my mobility," he said, "and it's been hard and I've let you guys down and for that I apologize. So I've made a decision to leave the boat."

The bombshell episode ended with a "to be continued" message, meaning fans will have to tune in next week for more details on Captain Lee's departure from the yacht.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on Bravo.

'Below Deck' 's Captain Lee Rosbach Closes Out 'Magical' Tenure on Bravo: 'It Feels Right'

After a decade on the Bravo series, Rosbach hung up his epaulettes on Monday's episode: "It's kind of a bittersweet moment. It's your last docking — you sure as hell don't want to f--- that up"

Lanford Beard is the former Senior TV Editor at PEOPLE. She worked at the brand from 2015 through 2024.

below deck captain lee own the yacht

Below Deck is officially a man down after Captain Lee Rosbach said his final farewell to the Bravo hit after 10 "crazy" seasons.

Rosbach, 73, appeared in his final episode on the yachting show on Monday night. As another charter season wrapped up, the man affectionately known as the "Stud of the Sea" sprinkled in a few of his signature salty words of advice and reflected on the coda to his four-decade-long career in yachting.

"Being a captain and being out on the water, there's just something kind of magical out there," he said early in the episode. "It feels right, it's kind of like Christmas morning."

Season 10's final charter guests were body builders, which hit close to home for Rosbach, who hit the gym every day for weeks in order to return to the ship after he had to temporarily step away due to health concerns .

But, despite his admiration for the guest's commitment to physical fitness, he did draw a line when they asked the crew of motor yacht St. David to star in their own body building show.

Rosbach — a self-professed "gym rat" — was not about to take off his shirt for the guests. As he quipped in an interview: "There is only so much lipstick you can put on this pig."

The guests disembarked quickly since it was only a one-day charter, and with that Rosbach returned his ship to port one last time.

"When you're coming to the dock, it's kind of a bittersweet moment," he acknowledged. "It's your last docking — you sure as hell don't want to f--- that up."

After he bid adieu to his team members one by one, he mused aloud: "I really hate to say goodbye to any of this crew. I would stack them up against anyone, I really would."

Taking stock of his time on the sea, he offered up his trademark humor. "Going on 40 years I've been a yacht captain, have I seen a lot of crazy s---?" he asked, before adding a wry laugh: "Is a 40-pound robin fat? Yeah."

He continued over a montage of moments from the show that ranged from wacky to legitimately life-or-death : "Have I been in situations that I didn't think I was gonna make it through? Oh yeah."

But, he affirmed, "Deciding to become a yacht captain has been the best decision I have ever made in my life."

And of this season in particular, he said, " I made a promise that I would come back. That's a promise that I delivered. I want people to look at the job that I've done and go, 'He set the bar high, and he kept it high.' God d---, what a ride."

"I don't know what's gonna happen in the future, but the ocean's always gonna be part of me," he concluded. "I've still got the best god d--- job in the world."

Rosbach was forced to exit motor yacht St. David early into filming for season 10 , a reluctant decision he described to chef Rachel Hargrove as "one of the most humbling experiences of my life."

Below Deck Mediterranean 's Captain Sandy Yawn stepped in for much of the season, with Rosbach telling PEOPLE in December: " She really did me a solid. I'm grateful she was there."

"That's a very difficult situation that I put her in," he explained. "You're taking over somebody else's boat and somebody's else's crew. That's hard enough as it is — now add on top of it the fact that you're also filming a TV show and you've got me over here saying, 'By the way, I may or may not be back. It's open-ended, but I'll do my best!' I recognize how hard that is."

Below Deck debuted in July 2013, and its 10th season kicked off Nov. 21 with Rosbach and the St. David crew navigating the waters around the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia.

Kate Chastain — who developed a close personal bond with Rosbach while serving as his chief stew for several seasons — reflected on her mentor's time on Below Deck during a visit to Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in mid-December.

"You know, I think he had a great run," said Chastain, 40. "Ten years! It was his choice, for health reasons, and I think he's pleased with it."

Captain Glenn on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 return and the Bayesian 'freak accident'

Captain Glenn Shephard has been a familiar face throughout all four seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, where he has commanded Parsifal III.

From dealing with the yacht's unpredictable challenges and managing onboard love triangles, to enjoying oversized crackers in the galley, the Bravo star has made the 177-foot vessel his second home for more than 15 years.

Usually catering to demanding guests as they charter through Greece, Spain, and Italy, it seems fitting that the 63-year-old chatted with us from the comfort of his own boat, Avalon, in Croatia.

Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht has been one of the most anticipated in the show's history. Viewers have been eagerly awaiting its release after photos confirmed filming took place last summer.

Initially slated for a February debut, fans have speculated that the latest season’s release has been delayed following allegations of sexual misconduct against first mate Gary King, made by a production member just days after filming wrapped. King has vehemently denied the accusations.

Despite the controversy, the Montreal native reassured fans that the new season is on its way. However, he remains unsure of exactly when viewers will see him alongside engineer Colin Macrae and chief stew Daisy Kelliher back on their screens.

He told The Standard: “They announced it at BravoCon in November. But then it didn’t air in Spring or Summer. I think it’s coming soon, but I don’t know exactly when. The network decides that. I get endless questions on social media about it, but all I can say is, 'It’s coming soon'.

“We just have to be patient.”

Though the delay is frustrating, it appears both Shephard and fans will have to wait a bit longer for the next season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht. In the meantime, UK fans can catch him at the Southampton International Boat Show 2024 later this month. The event, the largest of its kind in the UK, returns for its 55th year at Mayflower Park from 13th to 22nd September 2024.

Speaking about his involvement, he said: "It's pretty cool. I'm really excited."

The seasoned captain will participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, host a meet-and-greet, and take part in a Q&A session. And he assured us that he’s ready for all questions, even tough ones regarding the recent Bayesian tragedy, which claimed the lives of British entrepreneur Mike Lynch , his daughter Hannah, and four others when their luxury yacht sank off Sicily.

Boat enthusiasts have been eager to hear Shephard’s perspective on the tragic sinking of Bayesian , especially given his experience with Parsifal III, a superyacht from the same manufacturer. Although that’s where the two vessels similarities end, with Parsifal boasting two masts, not one. It also doesn't have a lifting keel, meaning stability is always at its maximum onboard.

Speaking of the tragedy, Shephard added: “I know there's going to be questions, and I'm happy to address them, but I'm not going to speculate. All I can say is, my heart goes out to the family and loved ones of the people that perish. It's a horrible tragedy, and I'll also say it's definitely a freak accident. You know anyone thinking about going out on a boat and worried that's going to happen - that doesn't happen and I couldn't believe that it could happen.

“We're going to have to take steps to make sure it never happens again, obviously. But no one thought that that could happen. We're all blown away - people in the industry, naval architects - it was a freak incident. That's all I can say.”

Glenn stressed that the Marine Accident Investigation Branch will thoroughly examine the situation, avoiding “guesswork and conspiracy theories” amid the growing social media speculation. He also underlined the importance of safety onboard and reassured viewers that such freak accidents are uncommon.

“Safety is critical,” he said. “It's the most important thing at all times. And we're always keeping an eye on the weather, obviously, but that what happened was a very localised, I think was a very localised event.

“It probably came and gone in a matter of minutes. It's not a hurricane. It's not a storm that's lasting all night. It's something that blows through. I don't know I wasn't there, but that's what I think. And so you have to take all the precautions to be ready for anything, you know, and that's I think we will all learn from this.”

With his sailing knowledge sure to be challenged this weekend, Shephard can usually rely on the camaraderie of his fellow Below Deck captains to riff off of.

Since the debut of Below Deck Sailing Yacht in 2020, he has formed close bonds with Captain Sandy Yawn and Captain Lee Rosbach , whom he hopes will “take to the high seas again” after missing season 12 due to ill health.

However, Shephard's colleagues have had their share of drama. It all started when Yawn stepped in for Rosbach during Season 11 after he had taken ill. Their feud reached fever pitch when he publicly criticised her leadership and her decision to fire stew Camille Lamb without telling him. As a result, Yawn cemented their fallout by not inviting Rosbach to her wedding in May.

Despite the drama, Shephard has stayed neutral and hopes for reconciliation. He shared: “I always like to bring people together, but I don’t know the full story. There’s talk, and it seems they’ve confirmed they’re not the best of friends. But life’s too short for that.

“When we were all together on stage at BravoCon, they seemed fine. But personalities are tricky — especially in the yachting world, where square pegs don’t always fit into round holes. Strong personalities can mean conflict, and resolving that is a massive skill in any industry."

Looking ahead, the captain is contemplating his future with the show after five seasons. For now, fans can rest assured that Captain Glenn isn’t ready to retire from the captain’s chair just yet. He’s aiming to strike a balance between his work and personal enjoyment, signalling a move towards a more leisurely future.

“I’ll probably continue doing it as long as they keep asking me back. I love it. But because of my age, it’s time for me to stop and smell the roses a bit. My sailing days for work aren’t over, but I’m not going to do it full-time anymore. I’d love to do more seasons of the show.”

The Southampton International Boat Show 2024 takes place at Mayflower Park from September 13 to 22. More information available here .

Below Deck's Kate Chastain Offers A Shocking Response To Chef Ben Robinson's Surprising Relationship Update

American idol winner announces exciting career opportunity after being dropped by record label, married at first sight season 18 cast announcement video proves producers don’t care about brand-new couples.

After almost a decade on one of Bravo's most watched franchises, Captain Lee Rosbach announced during the latest episode of Below Deck season 10 that his time at sea has come to an end for now. Captain Lee became Below Deck 's first captain when the series premiered back in 2013. While Captain Glenn Shepard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht and Captain Sandy Yawn from Below Deck Mediterranean have become Bravo staples in their own right, Captain Lee has remained the face of Below Deck since his television debut. With a hilarious personality and no-nonsense attitude to match, Captain Lee's charters have continuously remained equally dramatic and entertaining.

Despite his massive popularity, however, rumors that Captain Lee would quit Below Deck season 10 began to swirl shortly after the series was renewed at BravoCon in October. The trailer for Below Deck season 10 showed a lot of promise, with drunk charter guests and returning stars chef Rachel Hargrove and newly promoted chief stew Fraser Olender. Captain Lee hinted that while he had plenty of plane tickets he was ready to give out, one might have been reserved for him. On Below Deck season 10's December 12th episode, Bravo viewers found out that this was indeed the case. Captain Lee broke the sad news to his crew that he had to leave the St. David early in the middle of the charter season.

Captain Lee Left Below Deck Season 10 Due To His Health

While his untimely exit didn't come out of left field for Below Deck fans who were aware of the rumors, Captain Lee, who is 73, revealed to Caroline Stanbury lookalike Camille Lamb and the other Below Deck season 10 stars that he had to quit the series so that he could focus on his health. Captain Lee, who was shown struggling to navigate around the St. David with a cane, explained in an emotional confessional that he was suffering from an unspecified nerve disorder. This health issue not only made it difficult to walk, but left the left side of his body numb. While Captain Lee was aware of his condition before he joined Below Deck season 10, he incorrectly assumed that his symptoms would improve over time. When they instead began to get worse, Captain Lee made the decision to leave so that the boat wouldn't be brought down with him.

Captain Lee Was Briefly Replaced On Below Deck Season 9

Captain Lee's health battles aren't exactly breaking news to Below Deck viewers, as the fan favorite star was temporarily replaced by Captain Sean Meagher for the first few episodes of Below Deck season 9. When the series returned in late 2021, Captain Lee had to miss My Seanna's first charter after he had to undergo surgery. Although Captain Sean ran a tight ship during his short stint on Below Deck , bosun Eddie Lucas and the rest of the crew made it obvious that they missed Captain Lee, who Eddie humorously referred to as their "boat daddy."

Although Captain Lee's early departure will undoubtedly change the trajectory of Below Deck season 10, it's still possible that Captain Lee's time with Bravo may not be over entirely. Captain Lee took to social media and reassured fans that his health has improved since Below Deck season 10 filmed. In late November, it was further hinted that despite recent obstacles, Captain Lee has no plans to permanently retire just yet. In the meantime, dedicated Below Deck fans must wait to watch not just Captain Lee's sad send-off, but who is sent in to replace St. David's "Stud of the Sea."

‘Below Deck’: Captain Lee Rosbach on Milestone Season 10 & His Future

Captain Lee Rosbach at BravoCon

  • Captain Sandy’s 3 Reasons to Watch ‘Below Deck Med’ This Season
  • ‘Below Deck’ Alum Captain Lee Teases His Shocking True-Crime Series ‘Deadly Waters’

“Everyone wants to be captain until it’s time to do captain sh-t.”

These are the words uttered by Captain Lee Rosbach on Below Deck . And if we’ve learned one thing over the last decade, it’s the “Stud of the Sea” is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and do captain sh-t. To mark season 10 of the show that launched a fleet of spinoffs, Rosbach heads up St. David. The largest motor yacht in the show’s history, which will bring its own set of challenges for the charters in Saint Lucia.

His crew this time around includes familiar faces, chef Rachel Hargrove and Fraser Olender, who was promoted to chief stew. They’ll be joined by new bosun Ross McHarg, stews Hayley De Sola Pinto and Alissa Humber, and deckhands Tony Duarte, Katie Glaser, and Ben Willoughby . Rounding out the group is Camille Lamb, who will split her duties as a deck/stew.

Here Rosbach teases what’s to come and sets the record straight on if season 10 is his last voyage.

Do you remember the first time you felt Below Deck was a hit?

Captain Lee Rosbach: I don’t think it was until season 3 that it really sunk in and people were starting to recognize you just walking down the street or a restaurant. By season 4 or 5 you realize your anonymity is gone, and you’re never going to get it back. Not that it’s a bad thing. Nobody gives you a playbook as they do in the NFL because everything is unscripted. Cameras start rolling at 6:30 a.m., and they don’t stop for six weeks.

Was there a place you were recognized that surprised you?

Thailand, walking down the street. Thailand is such an exotic place that is a cornucopia of light and sound with music and culture everywhere. Then out of nowhere in the back someone yells, “Captain Lee!” I think, “Jesus!! I’m in Patong Beach and somebody recognizes me here.” It turned out this was a guy from Jersey running a club there getting to open for the evening. We sat and chatted for about 15 minutes. That surprised me. I thought for sure I’d be safe in Thailand.

What was it like having all the captains together at BravoCon? Do you have a favorite spin-off?

Now you’re asking me to play favorites. You know that I’m not going to do that. It was a good effort. It is really flattering to see all the spin-offs that have come from the original. It was incredible to have all five of us together was incredible at BravoCon. I don’t think the fans were totally ready for it when we popped up on stage for Watch What Happens Live . To have everyone together, was a tremendous feeling because it all started with one dream and one season where nobody really knew what we were doing because nobody had filmed on a boat before. The amount of work that goes into it. Having it be such a success was really rewarding.

Nadine Rajabi, Captain Lee Rosbach, Captain Kerry Titheradge, Captain Glenn Shephard, Captain Sandy Yawn, Captain Jason Chambers at BravoCon

Todd Williamson/Bravo)

Captain Sandy Yawn broke ground as the first female captain in the Below Deck franchise. This season you break ground with Fraser as the first male stew. How does that feel?

It is a milestone. I’m a firm believer in meritocracy. You get your job based on merit. You keep your job based on merit. You will lose your job for lack of merit. I don’t care if you’re male or female or what color you are. It makes no difference to me. Are you the best candidate for the job? Fraser did such an outstanding job in my opinion that I stopped calling him Fraser and referred to him as Mr. Olender because I think he has earned that. Yes, it is a milestone because of what Captain Sandy and some other captains have done on the female side in breaking through barriers Mr. Olender has done it on the other side of the coin. He has broken in and succeeded in a female-dominated job category. He should be extremely proud of himself.

This vessel is immense in that it has an extra deck. In the first episode chef Rachel feels those challenges early on. How was it managing the size of St. David?

It’s big for everybody. It’s so big we added another crew member because you can’t run a 200-ft boat with the crew we had previously. Yes, 15 feet doesn’t feel like much until you start walking it every day The dining room is three stories up and there is not an elevator, your glutes are going to be pretty good by the end of the season. It was a breakthrough for everyone I think.  The bigger they get logistically speaking creates some issues I think our staff dealt with quite well this year. Were there speedbumps? You’ll see.

Fraser Olender of 'Below Deck'

Laurent Bassett/Bravo

Camile looks to be at the center of some drama, at least early on. What was the dynamic like having a deck/stew?

You have to have the right person to take on both roles and have the right person who can handle two separate personalities and two bosses. The department heads controlling this one individual can’t be seen as fighting over her or him. We have to work out something between everyone. When I need Camille when we’re docking and coming off the dock. Then it’s up to the bosun when he needs her and then communicate that to the interior. Those two dichotomies have to work together..it does present a whole host of issues. It takes special people to deal with it all.

What are your overall thoughts on the crew this season?

It’s comical because when the cameras start rolling on day one when the crew comes aboard everybody is on their best behavior. It’s what I call the honeymoon period. Even at 200 ft., that boat gets small really quickly with that many crew. Depending on how many A-type personalities are on board, but t doesn’t seem we have any lack of that on our boats. This is a great season. There are going to be a lot of wow moments where people are going to be like, “I didn’t see that coming.” And, “Did the captain really do that?”

What can you say about the charter guests?

This season we had a good group of charter guests. I believe I didn’t have to toss anyone off for bad behavior. There may have been some things I frowned on. Everybody knows I wear it on my sleeve how I’m feeling. Make no mistake about that. There were some interesting moments, to say the least. We had an all-girls charter that totally surprised me. It’s rare I get caught off guard or someone does something that I didn’t expect. It happened this year

Does anyone have to leave the boat or get fired?

Scott, you know I can’t tell you that. Good try.

You’ve spent more than 37 years in the business. You come into this charter season after a surgery for nerve issue on your left side. What was your mindset for season 10? The teaser had a lot of people thinking that you’re thinking of retirement.

My mindset has always been that I can get it done no matter what. Give me the challenge, and I’ll get it done. I’ve been that way my whole life. For me, if I had to take a job I didn’t like, I didn’t stay there long at all. I’ve always said that when it comes time for me to walk away it will come down to it not being fun or you guys not liking me or the show. Other than that, I have every intention of being there. I don’t have any plans of retiring. I think retirement is overrated.

Former ‘Below Deck’ Stars: Where Are They Now?

Former Below Deck Stars Where Are They Now

Below Deck and its spinoff series have never failed to bring the drama to Bravo fans everywhere since the franchise launched.

The original series premiered in 2013, documenting the daily lives of crew members on luxurious yachts during charter season. With each season, the crew members’ personal lives have begun to cross over into their work lives, leading to shocking reality TV romances, breakups, firings and dramatic exits. In February 2020, longtime Below Deck personality Kate Chastain announced that she would finally be heading back to dry land after six seasons on the ocean.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, I have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new land based role. I intend to step back as a senior member of the Below Deck Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support His Majesty Andy Cohen,” she teased via Instagram as she stepped down from her position as part of reality TV royalty.

Chastain later admitted she might not be ready to say goodbye to Bravo forever.

He was arrested for disorderly intoxication and battery in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 2018 and spoke out about the "big misunderstanding" at the season 6 reunion. "It was just me and a couple of mates having a night out. That's pretty much all I can say. I can't really elaborate on it," he said at the time.

"We’ve been dating for a couple of months," Barragan told the "Gangplank Report" podcast in April 2022, revealing that her love gave her a Caribbean Hook bracelet.

She explained, "It has like a little horseshoe on it — or like a hook. And if it’s facing outward, it means you’re open. And if it’s facing the other way, it means that you’re taken. So when he gave me the bracelet, he put it on me with the horseshoe, meaning closed. And I looked at him like, ‘Oh!’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah.’ I was like, ‘Awww, that's so cute.'”

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Salaries Revealed and See How it Compares to Motor Yacht Pay, Plus Captain Lee Reveals Which Captain’s Job is Harder

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Salaries Revealed and See How it Compares to Motor Yacht Pay, Plus Captain Lee Reveals Which Captain's Job is Harder

The Below Deck crew members are raking in the cash, but which yacht crew makes the most?

In the first season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , the crew made a total of $143,000 in tips for a six-week season, allowing each yachty to pocket $16,000. That’s a nice chunk of change for a mere six weeks, but that amount is considered mid-range compared to what other crews have received in the franchise. For instance, Captain Lee Rosbach ‘s season five crew took home $56,650 each in tips alone.

According to one yachting source, crews working on motors yachts, such as the ones featured on Below Deck and Below Deck Mediterranean , tend to make more in tip money , and they also earn higher salaries than sailing crews. Motor yachts require a higher level of formality, which is one reason for the difference in pay.

“Motor yachts are more formal regarding uniforms, owner and guest relations, and job requirements,” according to the source as reported by Showbiz Cheat Sheet . “That is why the salaries are higher.”

For example, a deckhand on a sailing yacht earns around $3,250 per month while someone with the same position on a similar size motor yacht will bring in about $4,000 per month. This difference also applies to the stewards as a motor yacht stew makes about $3,300 monthly while a sailing stew will earn around $2,500.

As for captains, it’s unclear what Captain Lee, Captain Sandy Yawn , or Captain Glenn Shephard are making. According to Luxury Yacht Group , yearly salaries range anywhere from $48,000 to $310,000, but the amount completely depends on experience and the size of the vessel.

Although Captain Lee likely receives a higher salary than Glenn, Lee claims that Glenn’s job is more difficult.

“Sailing vessels are a lot of work, but we usually have more crew on same size motor yacht, but I would say sailing on a big sailboat is harder,” he explained to a curious fan on Twitter on March 1.

The Below Deck Sailing Yacht crew does have one big advantage, though. They are typically able to spend more time exploring the beautiful surroundings than those on a motor yacht.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 cast: Meet Captain Glenn’s new and returning crew members

Captain Glenn on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5

Captain Glenn Shephard will be back on the small screen soon for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5.

After a delay and a slew of fan speculation, Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht finally received a premiere date and a trailer.

However, in true Below Deck fashion, a couple of alums make up Captain Glenn’s latest crew, but a fan favorite is missing.

Colin MacRae isn’t returning as Chief Engineer after a turbulent Season 4 that fractured his friendships with Gary King and Daisy Kellier.

The three helped revamp the sailing show after a lackluster Season 1, making it a hit along with Captain Glenn. Colin will undoubtedly be missed.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht stars Daisy Kelliher and Gary King are back

Two people needing no introduction are Gary and Daisy, who are each back for their fourth season on Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

Last summer, photos of Gary and Daisy filming Season 5 were leaked; honestly, we weren’t surprised to see them in the mix. Despite their friction, which amps up for Season 5, Daisy and Gary make good television.

Gary was featured much less in the trailer than in previous seasons, and that likely has to do with the sexual misconduct allegations that came out after Season 5 was filmed. Recently, Gary shared an update about his accuser as he continues to proclaim his innocence.

Who are Captain Glenn Shephard’s new Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 crew members?

Chef Cloyce Martin takes over the galley, and at 22, his age will play a huge factor in the season. We already see him clash with Daisy in the trailer.

Davide Morosi takes over Colin’s chief engineer role, and he seems to be pretty private, with little to no activity on social media.

Stew Diana Cruz declares herself “an organized mess” who has caught the acting and yachting bug.

Danni Warren rounds out the interior crew. She has a connection with Below Deck Med’s Bri Muller and seems to want to be in the social media influencer game, too.

Deckhand Keith Allen catches Daisy’s eye on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5. Keith isn’t just a sailing yachtie but a photographer and diver who loves to travel.

Emma Crouch makes up the rest of Gary’s deck team. She’s all about being a yachtie, including helping others get into the business as a trainer with Paper Boat Yachting Academy.

That’s a brief preview of the Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 cast. Fans will have to turn in to find out more about Captain Glenn’s crew, especially to learn how Daisy and Gary work together after their Season 4 fallout.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premieres on Monday, October 7 at 9/8c on Bravo. Seasons 1-4 are streaming on Peacock.

The Below Deck franchise would not be complete without the many captains that have steered the mega yachts across both the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Some captains have been more memorable than others, including Below Deck's very first captain, Captain Lee, who starred in 10 seasons of the show and was known for his no-nonsense approach when it came to yachting .

In Season 2 of Below Deck Mediterranean , the franchise saw its first woman captain—Captain Sandy Yawn—taking the helm of the Sirocco. Since then, she has starred in every season, and fans have gotten to know Sandy for more than just her hands-on approach and nurturing relationship with her yacht crew. In Season 9, which sees fan-favorite Aesha Scott as chief stew, Captain Sandy opens up about her private life and shares her plans to propose to her girlfriend, Leah Shafer.

Captain Sandy and Leah have a beautiful love story, and who would have guessed that Leah made the first move after being a huge fan of the show.

Captain Sandy has become a household name as she starred in Seasons 2-9 of Below Deck Med . She became reality TV's first female captain and has become known for her tough love personality. In fact, it took viewers a few seasons of watching Captain Sandy to have her grow on them. Fans will remember in Season 5 when Captain Sandy made the decision to fire chief stew Hannah Ferrier for having "drugs" on board, despite Hannah having a prescription. Fans rallied around Hannah and Captain Sandy's likability was tarnished.

Hannah and Captain Sandy have since made amends and fans have changed their minds about Below Deck Med's captain as they watch her season after season. In the show's most recent Season 9, viewers watch as she's given 3rd stewardess Bri Muller multiple chances to redeem herself in her position, proving that she really cares about her crew.

In addition, Captain Sandy has typically stayed quiet about her personal life, but has opened up way more and has become more relatable as she's given viewers an inside look into her relationship with her now wife, Leah Shafer.

Fans have learned a lot more about Captain Sandy's love life, including how she and Leah first met. The two were not set up by friends or had even known one another previously. Surprisingly, Leah happened to be a fan of the Bravo franchise and simply reached out to Captain Sandy to wish her well.

In an interview with ShowBiz Cheat Sheet , Captain Sandy shared how she and Leah first connected . Leah reached out to Captain Sandy through Facebook Messenger. In a private message, Leah, a gospel singer, wrote:

"I came across your show, congratulations, many blessings."

While the private message was so simple, Captain Sandy shared that the "many blessings" part really made an impact on her. Although the captain does not discuss her religion on the show, she maintains a strong faith in God.

In the same interview, Captain Sandy shared that having a relationship while being a captain at sea was extremely difficult. "It's hard to have a relationship being a yacht captain. And most of my friends that are yacht captains, they've divorced or they hook up with people in the industry."

What Are The Below Deck Mediterranean Season 1 Cast Doing Now?

However, Captain Sandy wanted to see where things would go with Leah, and the two met in person in late 2018. Leah told the outlet that the two had an instant connection.

"It was definitely unexpected. It just happened, when you meet another soul that you connect with at such a deep level, it is unexplainable and so beautiful."

Captain Sandy Proposed To Leah On Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9

In the Season 9 trailer, Captain Sandy tells chief stewardess Aesha Scott about her plans to propose to Leah in Greece. Later in the season, viewers watch Captain Sandy get down on one knee and ask for Leah's hand in marriage, to which she says yes, and the crew joyfully celebrate from behind-the-scenes.

The season is the first time viewers get to really see Captain Sandy being so open about her private life . After five years together, Captain Sandy made it official. Speaking to E! News about their proposal, the reality star shared that she had wanted to ask for Leah's hand in marriage sooner .

"I knew from the minute I met her, but the timing had to be right. I wanted to make sure we could truly do life together first." Captain Sandy later shared how her vision to pop the question to Leah went down. "I planned a boat ride t oa beautiful cove. I had it decorated with flowers with a path to a small table accompanied by three violinists where we would sit and have a small date. I shared my vision list of love I had written and wanted, then got down on one knee. Then she said, 'yes!'"
