“It’s what we do. We live the life,” said Bluewater Yacht Sales senior partner and CEO Curry C. “Chris” Hall. “It’s not a 9-to-5 job where we get in the car and drive to some dealership. Our customers are our friends.”
In fact, more than 500 customers from along the East Coast are expected to attend the anniversary party at the Bluewater Yachting Center at 1 Marina Road in Hampton on Saturday night. The event is part of the company’s annual summer cruise event, and boaters started coming into town Thursday.
Downtown Hampton restaurant owner Carlyle Bland, who also is an avid boater, member of the Hampton Yacht Club and board president of the Downtown Hampton Development Partnership, said Bluewater has been an economic driver for downtown. Bluewater offers a water taxi from its marina to the downtown area. Bluewater’s repair facility also brings in business and supports high-paying jobs, Bland said.
“He definitely proved if you build it, they will come,” Bland said.
In 2002, the company celebrated the grand opening of its Bluewater Yachting Center with a sales office and marina with floating docks that can accommodate more than 200 boats. Surf Rider restaurant opened as a tenant that year and other amenities at the center include a pool, pavilion, showers and laundry. Bluewater’s service yard is on Marina Road by the Sunset Creek Boat Ramp.
But the vision for what the business could become started decades earlier. Chris Hall Sr. grew up boating and had a successful career as a food broker when he took on a part-time business as a Cal Boats dealer in 1968. While he grew up in Portsmouth and started selling sailboats in South Hampton Roads, the safe harbor and deep water in Hampton attracted Bluewater to buy a yard on Bridge Street next to the Hampton Yacht Club in 1971.
The business expanded that location by acquiring adjacent properties and in 1979 acquired a boatyard — the current service yard — on Sunset Creek, which got Bluewater into the powerboat business. In 1996, Chris Hall Sr. said he bought the neighboring Hampton Roads Marina on Marina Road with a vision of a one-stop, full-service center. Hampton Yacht Club bought Bluewater’s Bridge Street properties.
Now, he’s hoping to find ways to expand Bluewater’s Hampton headquarters even more.
“Our business is growing dramatically,” Hall Sr. said. “We need more room. We want to grow in Hampton. This is where our roots are.”
Brother and Bluewater partner Earle Hall, 60, said there wasn’t a predetermined plan to grow large so much as it’s in the DNA of the company to push harder and reach farther. They find a way to stay accessible to customers and help them with whatever they need, including delivering boats to Jakarta, Indonesia.
Bluewater has weathered three major economic downturns, including the most recent Great Recession, and lost money in every one, as boats aren’t a necessity, Hall Sr. said. Still, Bluewater never laid off employees, he said. During the 2007-2009 recession, many boat manufacturers and dealers went out of business across the country, he said.
Bluewater weathered financial storms by being diversified, including not only with service and repair but also by brokering boat sales for owners, Hall Sr. said. The company also has focused more on high-end yachts and boats and so was more insulated in that niche, he added. Its most recent acquisition of a private yacht finance business enables Bluewater to offer customers financing, Hall Sr. said.
The next challenge will be reaching younger buyers who entered the workforce in the wake of the recession or with student loan debt and so may not be able to afford boats, Hall Sr. said. Still, sports fishing interest continues to grow among younger demographics and families enjoy cruising, tubing and other recreation, he said.
While Bluewater is competing with various diversions for folks’ time today, once people get a taste of the boating lifestyle, they tend to want to be more involved, said Earle Hall, known for sport fishing. Both he and his brother— along with the Bluewater team — have enjoyed success sailboat and powerboat racing and in fishing tournaments. Bluewater continues to sponsor such events.
Nowadays, Chris Hall Sr., 75, and wife Judy Hall, who live in walking distance of the yachting center, like cruising and enjoy watching activity on the water.
“You’ll never ever meet anybody who loves boats more than him,” Chris Hall Jr., a Bluewater salesman, added about his dad.
Partner Jud Black, who is active in sales, said Bluewater has lasted 50 years because it’s been willing to adapt to change and accommodate customers and the market, particularly with how technology has changed. The goal is to be the go-to boat dealer for customers from their first boat and upgrades over time, he said. The ongoing relationship means a lot of customers do become friends, he said.
“We sell what we would own ourselves,” Black said. “We love boating.”
And for many customers, their boat becomes a symbol of their achievement and the boat names often tell their story, Judy Hall said. A lot of customers don’t necessarily come from money but are self-made and worked hard over the years to build a business and get a boat for their families to enjoy.
This weekend marks the sixth time Mark and Katie Boaz of Annapolis, Md., have come to Bluewater’s summer cruise. They recently upgraded to a 34-foot Regulator named Dauntless — because they’re not afraid to “just go” — and they said they enjoy being around other boaters.
Bill and Doris Morris, who said they faced their fair share of struggles before growing their business, came from Wrightsville Beach, N.C., to honor the 50th anniversary. They bought two boats from Bluewater, most recently a 55-foot Viking, Doris Morris said. Now, they can have fun as grandparents.
“It’s a lifelong dream,” Bill Morris said. “It’s a family magnet.”
