Itinerary of your cruise

To avoid the flood of tourists as well as the Meltemi wind, which is particularly strong in the Cyclades during the summer months, GlobeSailor has put together a 7-day itinerary for the Saronic Gulf, enabling you to discover some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful gems. We've kept cruising and navigation periods short and confined to the morning to let you make the most of the destinations, the local culture and of course... to give you time to relax. This cruise is sure to keep everyone happy!

Day 1 : Athens - Poros (about 30 nautical miles) The crew will meet you at 14:30 at the Alimos Kalamaki marina. Your boat is located on pontoon 9, between place 914-927. You will be welcomed with a welcome drink before attending the briefing of your skipper and leaving the moorings around 3pm. A lunch prepared with local produce will be served during the crossing. You will anchor in Poros at the end of the day. This island will seduce you with its old-fashioned charm and pastel-coloured houses and traditional taverns. Dinner at your leisure. Day 2: Poros - Hermion (about 21 nautical miles) You will leave Poros and head for the Tselevinia Islands for a relaxing stop. You can take the opportunity to jump into the blue waters and take a dip before lunch. You set sail again towards the south of the Peloponnese. You will stop at Hermione, a fishing village, mentioned by Homer in the "Catalogue of Ships". Once ashore, you will have free time to explore each alley of the old town. Dinner at leisure. Day 3 : Hermione - Spetses (about 11 nautical miles) You set sail again towards Spetses, an island with a sweet jasmine scent, very popular among Athenian high society. You will anchor in the old port before exploring the island on foot or even by horse-drawn carriage. You can discover the lively district of Dapia, with its shops, cafes and restaurants, and also see the impressive Poseidonion Hotel built in 1914 to develop tourism. Dinner at your leisure. Day 4 : Spetses - Dokos (about 5 nautical miles) Breakfast, then departure for Dokos, a wild and uninhabited island completely untouched by tourism. A favourite place for sailors, its idyllic anchorages, such as the bay of Skintos, will make for an enchanting stopover. Take a seat around the table and enjoy the delicious local dishes prepared by your hostess, then get out your fins, mask and snorkel to observe the extraordinary sights under the water. Dinner on board. Day 5 : Dokos - Hydra (about 7 nautical miles) The crew hoists up the anchor and heads to one of Greece's most beautiful islands, Hydra. You will appreciate the peaceful atmosphere that prevails on this island where motor vehicles were banned years ago. As your day is free, you can explore the island at your own pace and discover the Assumption Monastery, the Museum of Archives and many others. Climbing to the top of the hill overlooking the city, you will have a breathtaking view of the port. At the end of the day, the colors are even more spectacular. Lunch and dinner at your leisure. Day 6 : Hydra - Perdika (about 22 nautical miles) Your cruise continues a little further north. You will stop in Perdika, a charming fishing village located southwest of Aegina. Its rocky beaches are beautiful. We recommend you pick a spot on one of them and take a swim or relax under the warm sunshine. You can taste delicious local seafood by visiting the fish market which is located near the port. This evening you will enjoy dinner at your leisure while admiring the sunset. Day 7 : Perdika - Athens (about 21 nautical miles) Why not start your day with a morning swim? You will spend the morning on Moni (nature reserve, located just 1 mile from Perdika) and meet hundreds of peacocks, unique inhabitants of the island. Moni’s crystal-clear water is perfect for a snorkeling session. After lunch, it will be time to set sail again for Athens. You will dock at the marina around 18:00. To end your trip in style, we recommend a short getaway to the ancient city to visit Acropolis and its archaeological treasures. Dinner at your leisure. Day 8 : Athens Your disembarkation is scheduled after breakfast, around 9am. Please note: It is possible that your crew will not be present on board for the last night at dock. Indeed, the crew enjoys spending time in a real bed between cruises. In this case, the skipper will give you all necessary instructions to follow to have your cold breakfast before departing the boat.

Wonderful sailing experience

Our experience aboard the Marmar exceeded our expectations. The boat was very well maintained and well stocked. Captain Mike and hostess Magda were very welcoming, hospitable and amiable. We knew from the start that we would be in safe, caring and competent hands for the entire week. Captain Mike would revue and solicit our feedback on each day’s route and planned activities, which helped to personalize the journey. Hostess Magda was very accommodating with our meal preferences and dietary needs. Her menus reflected Grecian comfort food and were always delicious. Our group agreed that the trip would not have been as special as it was if not for Captain Mike & Magda.

Jack and ema were wonderful

We really enjoyed our time on the sea. Jack and Ema were so friendly and knowledgeable of each port. They made recommendations on where to go and made sure that we were taken care of the entire time. Ema’s meals were delicious and she always created a peaceful atmosphere.

Honestly the best holiday we have every had!

From the first email enquiry, to stepping off the boat with a heavy heart...this was a dream come true. AMAZING service from Francesca with the quotes and booking and for arranging something extra special for my birthday on board too. The boat was excellent and plenty of room for all to either have some alone time, or be with the other guests. Very comfortable cabins with plenty of space and many options for seating, lying down, sun tanning on board. Jack and Emma were legends and we had so many laughs and they were the perfect skipper and hostess and just lovely people. The experience and knowledge they both have in so many different topics was brilliant and we couldn't imagine another sailing trip without them. Emma fed us the most delicious and varied menu. All so so good and was always so much food that nobody ever went hungry...and she did all of this with a massive smile on her face too. Could not recommend this experience more highly! Thank you for make my dream of a sailing holiday come true, and giving me the best 50th birthday I could ever imagine....we WILL be doing another cruise, that's guaranteed.

Fantastic experience

This was a dream vacation. Our skipper Jack is a true sailor, Very knowledgeable of the Saronic Islands, super skilled at sailing. He kept us well informed of the schedule all along the way. We had some higher level winds the week of our trip, and he adjusted the schedule slightly so that we could take advantage of getting good time under sail, but still found a quiet protected cove that would allow all of us to have a great night sleep. Hostess Emma, is warm and friendly, putting everyone at ease. She is a great cook, the meals were all fantastic. She is also very knowledgeable of the islands and restaurants and shops, giving helpful tips at each stop. Before boarding we were a little unsure how the comfort of the cabins would be. Happy to say the beds are approximately Queen size, easily accommodates 2 tall adults. There were enough cubbies and drawers to put all our clothes and toiletries in without issue, but would recommend that you pack light. (It is a little like glamping.) The boat itself has many different areas to lounge or sit. It allows the passengers the choice of interacting or getting time to themselves. Also good options for sun or shade. The very best part of the trip was all the swimming and snorkeling. The water is just incredible. There are multiple opportunities to get into the water each day. I highly recommend taking advantage of every stop..

Awesome way to meet new friends (cabin booking)

We booked a cabin and was concerned with the tight quarters with strangers. I would say don't fear! It was a wonderful way to make new friends and the boat is roomy enough that you can have your privacy or hang out and visit. Captain Jack and Emma were wonderful in insuring everyone was safe and having fun. I would definitely do this trip again.

A presto!

Great cruise with a great crew

Emma & Jack are a great crew, skilled and friendly. They help, support and cuddle the people on the boat across the week spent in the lovely Island of gulf of Saronico. Special mention to the boat Marmar, kept by George in a very good shape. Lovely first week of honeymoon. Thanks Emma & Jack :-)

Croisiere reussi

Bellissima crociera

Splendida vacanza , skipper (Jack) molto competente, Emma (hostess) ottima cuoca e ottimo supporto tecnico nella navigazione, rotta splendida e mare perfetto.

Ottima accoglienza

Prima esperienza in catamarano, l'abbiamo trovato confortevole e mediamente pulito. Tappa a Hydra estenuante.

Traumhaft! alles super! empfehlenswert!

Types of ferries

The high-speed ferry Santorini Palace of Minoan Lines arriving in Santorini from Heraklion

Santorini Palace

During the high season, the route is operated by high-speed/catamaran ferries . Additionally, two conventional ferries also operate routes between the two destinations, mainly during the shoulder season. High-speed ferries are the fastest type of vessels, which is the reason for the short duration of the trip between Heraklion and Santorini. On the other hand, conventional ferries offer more affordable tickets.

Distance & Duration of the trip

The distance between Heraklion and Santorini is 63 nautical miles (72 miles or 120 km). The duration of the ferry trip is around 1 hour and 50 minutes for all high-speed/catamaran vessels . Conventional ferries will get you there in about 3 or 6 hours . The fastest ferries are Naxos Jet and Power Jet by Seajets.

Prices & Tickets

The ticket price range for this route is from '16' 'EUR' (16 Euros) to '129.7' 'EUR' (129.7 Euros) . For a standard seat in a conventional ferry, prices start from '16' 'EUR' (16 Euros) , while for a high-speed ferry, the minimum price is '78.9' 'EUR' (78.9 Euros) . Regarding Business class/VIP seats, those start from '104' 'EUR' (104 Euros) and can reach '129.7' 'EUR' (129.7 Euros) . Ferry companies usually offer discounts (25% to 50%) that apply to certain categories of passengers. Groups of people who are eligible for reduced-priced tickets include passengers with disabilities, families with 3+ children, infants, children up to 10 years old and ISIC cardholders (after showing the relevant documents).

Types of seats

Seats in the high-speed ferry Thunder of Fast Ferries

Seats in the ferry Thunder of Fast Ferries

Two types of seats are available on high-speed vessels - standard airline seats and business-VIP seats . Both types correspond to numbered seats, with standard airline seats being the cheapest option and business seats being more deluxe. On conventional ferries, standard economy seats are available as well. Holders of such tickets can either sit in one of the special lounges within the ferry or on deck. This type of seat is highly preferred since it is the most affordable option. However, these seats are not numbered, so even after booking a ticket, you do not secure any specific space on the vessel. To be able to find a comfortable place to sit throughout your journey, you should board the ferry as early as possible.

How to find your ferry in the port of Heraklion

The port of Heraklion is located in Heraklion Town. All passenger ferries depart from the western side of the port, at piers I and II. A passenger terminal is available as well. The main port of Santorini is Athinios, which welcomes all passenger ferries that reach the island. It is located around 10 km from the capital city (Fira).

Greek ferry companies do not have strict luggage policies allowing you to carry up to 40 kg or 0.5 cubic meters of luggage. All vessels offer a designated area for passengers' suitcases and other bulky objects, but you can also keep your luggage next to you onboard. We recommend taking your personal items such as your wallet, mobile phone and keys with you and using the designated area for bulky items.

Traveling with a car

The majority of ferries have a garage, allowing you to travel with your car or motorbike. To do so, a special ticket for your vehicle is required. In addition, you need to be at the port at least 60 minutes before departure time . Keep in mind that you will be asked to exit your vehicle after parking and you will not be allowed to enter the garage during the trip. Note : Many car rental companies do not allow customers to ferry their vehicles. We recommend avoiding purchasing a vehicle ticket before contacting your car rental company.

Alternative ways to reach Santorini

Santorini and Heraklion both boast international airports; nonetheless, there are no direct flights between Crete and Santorini. At the same time, there are numerous direct flights to the International Airport of Mykonos from many cities abroad during summer. Therefore, you can take a flight to Mykonos and then board a ferry to Santorini. Ferry itineraries between Mykonos and Santorini are daily and frequent during the high season. Another way is flying to the International Airport of Athens and then taking a ferry to Santorini from Piraeus or Rafina ports. The port of Rafina is located closer to the airport. Learn more about the Athens - Santorini ferry route . If you want to avoid additional transport, you can book a direct flight to Santorini from the International Airport of Athens.

By Ferriesingreece on 24-04-2014

If you have traveled to the Greek islands or if you are trying to book Greek ferry tickets, you have probably noticed that there are many Greek ferry types that run the routes between the islands and mainland ports. There are normal ferries, high-speed ferries, catamarans, and flying dolphins that have different features and run in specific routes. Here is a brief description of these Greek ferry types.

Normal ferry

Greek ferry types: Normal ferry

The normal ferry is the classic ferry type. This is a large vessel with the slowest speed of all types. However, it provides a very fun ferry ride to the Greek islands as travelers can stay at the deck and enjoy the vast blue sea. These conventional ferries have open decks, semi-enclosed decks, indoor salons, air type seats as well as cabins for 2-4 passengers, cabins for pets and disabled, and car garages. Cabins are very convenient for long or overnight trips to the Greek islands.

These simple ferries are the cheapest option for Greek ferry trips, which is why they are largely preferred by passengers who travel on a budget or by passengers who do not mind spending more time on board. Ferry companies with conventional ferries are Blue Star which runs schedules to the Cyclades islands, the Dodecanese and Eastern Aegean, as well as Minoan Lines which operates routes to Crete and Italy.

High speed ferry

Greek highspeed ferry

High speed ferry is usually smaller than the normal ferry, which is why their speed is faster . They are newly-constructed, modern and comfortable with open decks, indoor salons, air type seats, cabins and car garages. As high speeds are faster than normal ferries, their price is more expensive. These Greek ferries are ideal for passengers who do not like traveling in the sea. The ferry company Hellenic Seaways operates such high speed ferries.

Flying dolphins

Greek flying dolphin ferry

Flying dolphins (also called hydrofoils) are the smallest vessels that travel in the Greek seas. Their shape is oblong and they have only air seats. When reaching a certain velocity, they lift up from the sea and get inclined, achieving this way faster speed. These small vessels may carry 200-1000 passengers and operate short routes, such as the routes from Athens to Aegina, Hydra, Poros, and other Saronic islands, from Volos to Skiathos and Skopelos, from Corfu to Paxi, and the routes between the islands of Dodecanese.

Due to their small size, they are the first vessels to get affected by bad weather in Greece. Trips with such vessels are operated, for example, by the ferry companies Aegean Flying Dolphins and Hellenic Seaways.

Greek catamaran ferry

Catamarans are smaller than normal vessels and larger than flying dolphins. It is easy to spot a catamaran (cat for short), as they are multihulled vessels with parallel hulls of equal size. They have only air type seats and some catamarans also have car garages. As their speed is fast, they are also called flying cats. Hellenic Seaways and Sea Jets are two Greek ferry companies that run ferry trips with catamarans.

Island-hopping in Greece: everything you need to know

Explore the Greek islands by hopping on ferries across the seas © proslgn / Shutterstock

Scattered like pearls across the shimmering Aegean and Ionian seas, the Greek islands have lured in many travelers. From Jason and his adventuring Argonauts to Frankish Crusaders and Mamma Mia film crews, myth and enchantment envelop the islands much like their ribbons of sugar-soft sand.

There’s nothing quite like spotting the shoreline from a sun-drenched ferry deck or sailing into a vibrant port. In Greece , getting there is an essential part of the adventure and, thankfully, island hopping is a breeze.

When is the best time to go to the Greek islands?

While the Greek islands are stunning at any time of year, aim to visit between Orthodox Easter (usually April) and the end of May, or from September to mid-October. During these times, services and amenities are up and running, temperatures are balmy and crowds are thinner. From June until the end of August, you will definitely have warm sea water and hot weather, but you’ll be sharing it with the masses, paying top bill, and the meltemi (dry northerly wind) can play havoc with ferry schedules. In the low winter season, many ferry routes cease to operate, and hotels and restaurants shut up shop.

Depending on which Greek islands you're hoping to visit, it's a good idea to also check the local calendars for panigyria . These Greek summer festivals are unique cultural experiences that can be a lot of fun, but they also might affect ferry schedules, opening hours at attractions, and produce crowds and parades that can otherwise complicate the logistics of getting around. Panigyria on Ikaria , for example, occur all summer long on various saints' days, and some of the festivities run from dusk until dawn.

Should you plan your Greek island-hopping trip in advance?

In reality, it’s best to plan a little and leave a little to chance. A bit of planning can definitely take you a long way. Deciding where you want to go and understanding the ferry schedules before you go will take the work out of your vacation. Having said that, Greece is known for its laid-back attitude, and it’s worth emulating this while island-hopping. Ferry schedules are always subject to change, even pre-booked and pre-paid journeys. Anything from windy weather to worker strikes can mean delay or cancellation at short notice. Building a little flexibility into your schedule is wise.

What are the best Greek island-hopping routes?

You can definitely pick a few options from various groups of Greek islands and create your own route; however, many ferry lines service specific island groups, so planning can be easier if you stick to a single area. All flights lead to Athens – or so it seems – and arriving in the capital not only gives you the opportunity to take in its jaw-dropping sights, but it also brings you close to the port of Piraeus for boats to the Cyclades, Saronic Gulf islands and even more remote island groups like the Dodecanese. Athens also neighbors the port of Rafina for routes to the eastern Cyclades and further afield. To visit the Northeastern Aegean islands, land in Thessaloniki , Greece’s second city.

If you’re planning to spend most of your time in a specific island group, it’s worth catching a domestic flight from Athens to get you started – it will save you both time and money. Practicality aside, there’s nothing quite like descending in a twin engine onto a tiny airstrip in the middle of the bright blue sea. Some island destinations are also served by international flights in high season.

Which Greek islands are best to visit?

The appeal of the Cyclades is undeniable, and it’s here that you’ll find some of the most popular islands. Be prepared to share, especially in high season. From Piraeus, hop a ferry to Mykonos, the most glamorous of the Greek islands . Overlooked by its iconic windmills, you’ll rub shoulders with the famous as you explore the flower-filled lanes and boutique shops and cafes.

From here, day-trip to the tiny island of Delos with its ancient sun-bleached ruins. Carry on to Naxos , the largest of the Cyclades, with a walled seaside capital surrounding a hilltop castle. Even further south, you’ll reach Santorini with its iconic sunsets, black-sand beaches, vineyards and incredible Minoan site . Complete the loop with a stop in laid-back Milos , with dozens of beaches and charming villages to explore. At the end of the day, hop a ferry back to Piraeus.

Yacht moored in a secluded cove on Kalymnos island, Greece

In the Dodecanese , you’ll see and taste the historical influences of the parade of cultures that have passed through, from Romans and crusading medieval knights to Byzantine and Ottoman rulers. Think plenty of pasta, sugary baklava, stunning minarets, walled cities and crumbling mountaintop castles. The catamaran service that regularly connects the islands makes island-hopping simple. Begin by catching a flight to Rhodes , which abounds in sandy beaches, ancient history and a buzzing city life.

Visit volcanic Nisyros to hike through its verdant forests and into its steaming caldera, and Karpathos for its timeless hilltop village of Olymbos . Kalymnos will call climbers and divers with its undersea wrecks and limestone cliffs, while Patmos has an ethereal quality, where life is in tune with the monastery bells and where St. John experienced his revelations. If you’re visiting around Orthodox Easter, Patmos is the place to be. Loop back to popular Kos for an endless strip of brown-sugar sand, nightlife, easily cyclable roads and an airport with regular flights to Athens.

Ionian Islands

Nestled along the coast of the Peloponnese in the Ionian Sea, the Ionian Islands have a slightly cooler climate, abundantly forested mountains and countless stands of olive and cypress trees. From Athens, you can fly to Corfu where you’ll be wooed by Parisian-style arcades, Venetian alleyways and Italian-inspired delicacies. Corfu is large enough to escape the crowds to cypress-studded hills, lofty villages and sandy coves.

The next island is tiny Paxi, with beautiful harbor villages, rolling hills and ancient olive groves. Visit Lefkada for its sandy beaches and Kefallonia to kayak along the magnificent cobalt-blue bays. Take in time-forgotten Kythira for sugar-cube architecture and unspoiled wilderness. Far flung to the south, you can ferry back to Piraeus from here.

How to book ferry tickets

With a network covering every inhabited island, the Greek ferry system is vast and varied. The slow rust buckets that once plied the seas are nearly a thing of the past. High-speed ferries are increasingly common and cover most popular routes. Local ferries, excursion boats and tiny private fishing boats (called caiques ) often connect neighboring islands and islets. Meanwhile, plush catamarans can drastically reduce travel time and cope better with poor weather. For long-haul ferry travel, you can travel in serious comfort.

Many ferry companies have online booking services. Not surprisingly, high-speed boats sell out faster than slow chuggers. For overnight ferries, it’s always best to book ahead. These resources are useful for planning and booking:

Danae Travel A good site for booking boat tickets.

Greek Travel Pages Useful search option and links for ferries.

Greekferries Search ferry schedules, including accommodation options and multi-leg journeys.

Open Seas Reliable search engine for ferry routes and schedules.

Tips for traveling the Greek islands

When you book a ticket, you'll find that deck-class is just that: access to the deck and interior but no bunks, berths or cabins. Keep in mind that unless you state otherwise, you will automatically be given deck class when purchasing a ticket. For more luxurious or overnight accommodations, prices climb with airplane-style recliner seats right up to private cabins with bathrooms.

If you are considering taking a ferry overnight, it's worth remembering that a bed for the night in a cabin from Piraeus to Rhodes can be more expensive than a discounted airline ticket. It’s worth shopping around, depending on where you land in the Venn diagram of considerations like cost, travel time, comfort and a desire to experience of sailing the high seas.

If you're traveling around Greece with kids , children under five years of age travel for free on many ferry services, and tickets for those aged between five and 10 are usually half price.

Food on ferries can be overpriced and underwhelming. Bring your own snacks and water, or save your appetite for the famously robust food scenes in destinations like Rhodes and Symi.

You might not have much appetite if you veer towards seasickness. The water can be rough, so stare at the horizon, not the sea. Stay on deck for fresh air and don’t be tempted to read or use binoculars.

If you're hoping to explore the Greek islands by car, note that bringing a car on the ferries is expensive and generally requires advance booking. Car rental on the islands is relatively cheap and possible on almost every island.

If you've got some energy left, or extra room in your itinerary after returning to the mainland, remember that Piraeus is more than just the gateway to the Greek islands. You can easily spend a whole day in Piraeus itself, or at the very least check out the city's vibrant nightlife at popular clubs like Beluga and M adama after you disembark the ferry.

Greek Island Hopping by Hydrofoil

A fast and fun way to get going in the Aegean

catamaran ferry greece

Before the arrival of water-skipping hydrofoils on the choppy waters of the Aegean, travel between islands was a time-consuming, stomach-churning experience. But now these modern vessels cut travel time and (usually!) provide a smooth trip.

The hydrofoil lines depart from the port of Zea, part of Piraeus near Athens, and Raphia/Rafina, a short trip from Athens. Remember that hydrofoils and catamarans don't run in late fall or winter.

Generally, the pace of life in Greece is languid, with few people, other than the occasional taxi driver, pushing the clock. However, the hydrofoils are exceptions. These swift ships depart promptly, and on two occasions that I experienced, a little bit ahead of schedule. Be there at least 30 minutes ahead of time, and make reservations in advance when possible. In the event of rough weather, the hydrofoils may be cancelled. The rough trip I mention here was the last ship allowed to travel that day - the hydrofoil lines try to keep their reputation for smooth travel intact, but when Poseidon gets frisky, what do you do?

If you are travelling Greece with luggage, the hydrofoils are minimally accomodating. Expect to handle your own bags. Crowded voyages mean baggage stuffed in every corner, another hazard if the trip is a little rough.

For those prone to seasickness, be aware that these journeys are not always glass-smooth, at least on the smaller hydrofoils. Rough water will make itself felt. You may want to avoid sitting in the forward cabin of the vessel on the old yellow Ceres vessels, particularly during late spring, early autumn, and whenever storms are in the area. Stay inside the broad, flat rear cabin.

The outside areas of the hydrofoil are very tempting if you have a still or video camera, but once the ship hits full speed, you may be at risk if you are outside. Even when the water is relatively calm, the wind may be surprisingly strong. I spent a cold half-hour outside because I didn't think I could make it back into the cabin one-handed, and if I let loose of my camera, either the wind or the jolting caused by high waves that day were sure to smash it into the steel sides of the ship. I finally leapt through the open door when someone stepped outside, and my camera and I both survived as the ship lunged and I nearly tumbled into the open baggage hold.

The reward for these efforts is the smooth, powerful sense of flying on water, like some semi-divine mythical personage. The nickname "Flying Dolphin" is well-earned.

Larger hydrofoils offer amenities such as full bars and "in flight" movies. On a journey from Rafina to Mykonos, the movie was a film called "The Big Blue", which included many scenes of hydrofoil travel. It was surrealistic to glance at the television monitor, see speeding water, then glance out the windows beside the monitor, and see the same speeding water. Fantasy. Reality. Greece always seems to combine both seamlessly.

Hydrofoils are fun, efficient ways to maximize your time in Greece and spend your time on the delightful islands, not on the deck of a slow ferry. With the competition from the hydrofoils, the ferries have upgraded and are faster than they used to be, but nothing can match the hydrofoils unless you leave the water entirely and take to the air for your travel.

Hellenic Seaways Flying Dolphins & Cats

Hellenic Seaways (part of the Blue Ferries group) operate their hydrofoils (Flying Dolphins) and Catamarans (Cats - bigger than dolphins) out of Piraeus and have a regular timetable throughout the year. BUT they are really slow at publishing it in a timely manner. So don't be worried if you look during the winter and can't see dates and times for Spring let alone summer. They normally refresh the site in March, June and October.

2023: TICKET PRICE INCREASE. Tickets now cost €40 per person each way. So €80 for a return ticket.

YOU MUST BOOK ONLINE and collect your actual tickets from the official agents office on Piraeus Port. If you don't prebook especially in high season, you could end up not getting on board.

You'll find their ticket offices around the port but you want to walk to the far end office nearest to Gate E9, which deals specifically with Hydra. Don't forget to ask the ticket office to point out where you dolphin will leave from.

Telephone: +(30) 210 419 9000 (Piraeus) Ring this number in case of delays.

Hydreoniki Travel (Hellenic agent on Hydra) +(30) 22980 54007

(See here: In case of bad weather, cancellations or strikes )

There are quite a few travel agents online but they all add between 10 - 20 euros per ticket. So be sure to use just the official site which you can reach with the button link below for the best price.

  • Click the link above to go directly to the official online booking system of Hellenic Seaways (which will click into the Blue Star system when you choose book online).
  • Select tickets to collect from Agent (which is on the port side at Piraeus).
  • Print the email confirmation so you have the reference number with your travel documents.
  • Enter port at Gate E8.
  • Collect the actual tickets at least 15 minutes (30 mins in high season) before sailing. (The barcode on the email confirmation or on your phone only works if the girl collecting the tickets at the bottom of the gangplank has the machine with her - often this is not the case so it is always less stressful to obtain the actual tickets before you try to board.)
