Das neue Cupra Terramar: Sportives Design und vielfältige Antriebsvarianten

Mit dem 4,5-Meter-SUV Terramar setzt Cupra seine Modelloffensive fort. Das bis dato größte Modell soll der aufstrebenden Marke dabei helfen, weiter zuzulegen.

Der größte Cupra bisher soll auch die Fanbasis der gesamten Marke zum Wachsen bringen.

Wieder einmal Terramar. Sechs Jahre sind vergangen, seit der heutige CEO Wayne Griffiths auf dem Gelände des historischen Rennsport-Ovals vor den Toren Barcelonas mit großem Trara die "Geburt" von Cupra zelebrierte. 2022 präsentierte man dann an gleicher Stelle die größte Modelloffensive der noch so jungen Markengeschichte: drei komplett neue und vor allem exklusiv entwickelte Modelle für die folgenden drei Jahre. Mit dem elektrischen SUV-Coupé Tavascan kann der erste Vertreter des Trios seit Anfang Juni in Österreich bereits bestellt werden, im Herbst beginnen die Auslieferungen. Bevor Mitte 2025 der lang erwartete Elektrokleinwagen Raval aufschlägt, liegt der Fokus der Katalanen fürs Erste auf dem bislang größten SUV-Modell, das konsequenterweise auf den Namen Terramar hört und das nun im Umfeld des 37. America's Cup Weltpremiere feierte.

Cupra stößt mit dem Terramar in das A-SUV-Segment vor

Und das aus gutem Grund. Schließlich ist der Terramar das bis dato größte Modell der Seat-Schwestermarke mit dem besonders jugendlichen Image. Mit einer Länge von 4,52 Metern stößt der Teilzeitstromer in das aktuell besonders dynamisch wachsende A-SUV-Segment vor. Geht das Kalkül auf, so wird der Terramar einerseits neue Zielgruppen überzeugen und andererseits eine Option für Cupra-Wiederholungstäter sein, die mit der Marke mitwachsen wollen. Denn Wachstum kann die Marke, die international längst aus dem Schatten der weitaus traditionsreicheren Marke Seat getreten ist. Seit dem Start im Jahr 2018 hat Cupra bereits mehr als 700.000 Fahrzeuge ausgeliefert und zählt damit zu den am schnellsten wachsenden Automarken in Europa. Besonders erfolgreich ist man dabei in Österreich: 2023 fuhren 7223 Cupras aus den heimischen Schauräumen, das bedeutet ein Plus von über 36 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr und einen beeindruckenden Marktanteil von drei Prozent. Nach den ersten sechs Monaten 2024 hielt man auch schon wieder bei verkauften 3844 Einheiten. Geht man davon aus, dass der Tavascan und der ebenfalls bereits ab Ende Oktober lieferbare Terramar so richtig einschlagen, dürfte einem weiteren Rekordjahr kaum etwas im Wege stehen.

Terramar überzeugt mit sportivem Design

Aber zurück zum jüngsten Hoffnungsträger. Optisch lehnt sich der Neuzugang wenig überraschend an die etablierte und beliebte Designsprache der Marke an. Wenngleich man mehr denn je die Praktikabilität in den Vordergrund rückt (die verschiebbaren Rücksitze sollen den Kofferraum größer und einfacher nutzbar machen), bleibt der Terramar eindeutig auf der sportiven Seite. Die dynamischen Proportionen mit bis zu 20 Zoll großen Rädern, die fast schon aggressive Frontpartie sowie das breite Heck mit leuchtendem Logo und Modell-Schriftzug sind ein unmissverständliches Signal an die bestehende Fanbasis der Marke. Im Interieur sorgen serienmäßige Schalensitze sowie das weiterentwickelte Cockpit samt Mittelkonsole für maximale Wertigkeit. Auch das Infotainmentsystem - anfangs eher ein Schwachpunkt der südlichsten Volkswagen-Tochter - soll nun ganz auf Höhe der Zeit funktionieren und via 12,9-Zoll-Monitor und neue App-Anordnung noch intuitiver zu bedienen sein.

Cupra Terramar bietet vielseitige Antriebe

Spannend: Anders als der vollelektrische Tavascan wird der Terramar vom Start weg mit fünf verschiedenen Antriebsvarianten und drei unterschiedlichen Technologien zu haben sein. Den Einstieg bildet ein Mildhybrid (eTSI), bei dem ein 1,5-Liter-Benziner mit 110 kW/150 PS von einem 48-Volt-Startergenerator und der dazugehörigen Lithium-Ionen-Batterie ganz auf Effizienz getrimmt wird. Zwei Plug-in-Hybride - bei Cupra "E-Hybrid" genannt - sollen den Spagat zwischen Sparsamkeit und Sportlichkeit noch weiter perfektionieren. Leistungsmäßig stehen wahlweise 150 kW/204 PS oder 200 kW/272 PS an. Der Akku mit einer Netto-Kapazität von 19,7 kWh soll bei braver Fahrweise elektrische Reichweiten von mehr als 100 Kilometern ermöglichen. Geladen wird via Kabel wahlweise mit bis zu 50 kW (Gleichstrom) oder zu Hause mit maximal 11 kW an der Wallbox.

Terramar bietet starke Benzinmotoren

Trotz des bei Cupra traditionell starken Fokus auf das Thema Elektro ist der Terramar auch als Vollblutbenziner zu haben. Die 2,0-Liter-TSI-Motoren sind wie alle anderen Varianten auch standardmäßig mit einem 7-Gang-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe gekoppelt, kommen anders als die elektrifizierten Versionen aber serienmäßig mit Allradantrieb daher. Der "kleinere" Benziner liefert 150 kW/204 PS, die Topversion VZ kommt immerhin auf 195 kW/265 PS. Wie von Cupra gewohnt, passt auch das Fahrwerk zur sportlichen Grundabstimmung des Terramar. Dieser liegt standardmäßig zehn Millimeter tiefer und verfügt über eine neue Generation der adaptiven Fahrwerksregelung DCC mit Zwei-Ventil-Stoßdämpfer sowie Akebono-Hochleistungsbremsen.

Die Preise starten bei 35.900 Euro für den Mildhybrid mit Alpha-Ausstattung. Bei E-Hybrid (ab 51.900 Euro) sowie Benziner (mindestens 52.900 Euro) sind zunächst die jeweils stärkeren Varianten bestellbar, im November bzw. im ersten Quartal sind dann auch die zivileren Versionen bestellbar.

1st Cupra Terramar Rolls of Audi Hungaria Production Line

With the production of the Terramar, Györ will become Audi’s first factory to produce vehicles of a sister brand: Before it became a standalone marque, Cupra was a Seat sub-brand.

First CUPRA Terramar rolls of Audi Hungaria line

The first CUPRA Terramar model rolled off the production line at German car maker Audi’s factory in Győr (NW Hungary) on Friday.

Audi Hungaria chairman Michael Breme said production of the “sister brand” would contribute to high capacity utilisation at the plant for the next five years.

Audi Hungaria director for vehicle production Zoltán Les said the Terramar was produced on the same platform as the Audi Q3.

CUPRA CEO Wayne Griffith said the brand, launched in 2018, had sold over 700,000 units in six years.

István Joó , the head of the Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency (HIPA), said that the more than 700 companies in Hungary’s automotive industry employed 150,000 people directly.

Recent investments could double the annual output of the sector in a few years, raising it to over 1 million units, he added.

After the market launch of the Terramar, about 300 of the vehicles will be produced each day.

Last year, Audi Hungaria produced over 170,000 vehicles and 1,600,000 engines.

Looks (if you like that sort of thing), good to drive, decent range

Heavy and feels it, cabin design inhibits practicality

What is it?

Imagine a mid-’20s auto morphological word cloud and the conflation ‘electric crossover-coupé’ will leap out at you in the biggest font. These things are hot hot hot.

The Tavascan is Cupra's take on the electric crossover-coupé genre, and it pushes the stylistic tropes further than any other. This is a VW ID.5 (or Skoda Enyaq Coupé or Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron , take yer pick) done up to the nines. Indeed to the 10s.

The silhouette and proportions are no different from rivals, mind. See those VW Group siblings, or the Tesla Model Y , Nissan Ariya , Peugeot e-3008 , Volvo EC40 , Kia EV6 or Lexus RZ450e . But none of them have panelwork with such frantic swelling and wedgy creasing, or so much area of real and fake grilles, or such fashion-forward lighting.

The whole confection is a surprisingly close derivative of a concept car Cupra showed in 2019 . There's a lot of self-confidence in Cupra these days as the sporty and extrovert arm of the VW conglomerate. But then, you'll recall that's exactly what the now-moribund Seat brand was once supposed to do until it got distracted into making fat-bottomed Barcelona minicabs like the final generation of Toledo and Altea. Let's hope Cupra keeps its focus.

All-electric?

Yup, it's on the parent Group's MEB platform, so you know the drill. In this case the choices are simple: one battery size, 77kWh useable, connected to either single (RWD) or twin (AWD) motors. It's the twin-motor version, which goes by the name VZ, that we test here.

The rear motor does most of the heavy lifting, a 282bhp permanent-magnet synchronous job. The front one is a simple asynchronous induction motor: that type's advantage, cheapness aside, is that it makes little drag torque when it's not providing drive. It hits a maximum of 107bhp.

Overall on the AWD model you've got 340bhp and 402lb ft, but only when the control brain calls the front motor into use. Even so it's biased mostly to the rear. That's good for 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds. If you'd been expecting an all-traction car of this much power to accelerate faster than that, know that this Tavascan is all but 2.3 tonnes.

The single-motor version gets the same rear drive unit, and saves about 100kg. Its 0-62mph is 6.8 seconds.

WLTP range on smallest available wheels is 326 miles (20-inch) for the AWD and 355 (19-inch) for the RWD. Those numbers are better than the ones for the notionally similar VW ID.5. That's because aero drag is low – Cd 0.26, albeit with big frontal area – and at the rear is the VW Group's very latest AP550 motor and inverter unit, as seen on the impressively efficient VW ID.7 .

So far we haven't had a chance to do a proper range test, but on the basis of experience with the siblings prior to their motor update, we'd expect 250 to 300 miles in the real world for the rear-driver if you resist using the power too much.

The only black spot is that a heat pump and electric seats - which take a lot of load off the cabin heating system - aren't standard. You have to spring for a 'winter pack'. At least that's the case in Spain: UK specs are still being confirmed.

So is it as sporty as it looks?

Well, rivals have problems. They mostly ride badly – Tesla especially, but also the Nissan – or handle like unleavened dough. It's only really the Kia that strikes a satisfactory balance.

And now the Cupra too. Its standard adaptive dampers do a good job of keeping matters under control when you're scuttling along, but de-stress the ride when you're not. The steering's progressive if numb, and once you've got all that mass turned into a corner, the rear-biased balance of the motors' efforts makes it more engaging than you'd expect.

Paddles control the regeneration to give you something else to occupy yourself. The brake pedal itself, mind, isn't as sharp and predictable as the accelerator. Which is a pity.

We haven't tested the RWD version yet, but we suspect that'll be just as satisfying to drive and would give you some money left for an option pack.

Does the shape kill the space?

Not in any of the important ways. The sloping rear glass rules out seats-down transport of wardrobes, but the boot itself beneath the parcel shelf is very much full-sized. Headroom in the back is fine too, as well as leg space.

As with the outside, Cupra's designers and colour-and-trim teams have been given a surprisingly free hand in here. But one of their headline features, the central spine between dash and console, takes away space for what airlines call 'small personal items'.

And if you're worried about the VW Group screen system, well this has their latest software, biggest screen, fastest processor and reconfigurable quick-access screen-buttons. Not as good as physical buttons or climate controls, no, but we managed to go several hours without yelling rude words at it.

What's the verdict?

The styling is a matter of taste and will be the thing that turns people on or off the Tavascan. If they're turned off, they're actually missing out on one of the best-realised cars in the class.

The predicted UK entry price of £47,300 looks OK, though our guess is they'll make the winter pack standard and add a grand or so.

It's decent to drive yet comfortable. Performance and efficiency are up to par. The screens more than do the job. And people have almost stopped saying 'Cupra, never heard of it,' which saves you time explaining those illuminated front and rear badges.

Der Born ist das erste rein elektrische Auto des Seat-Ablegers Cupra. Er ähnelt dem VW ID.3, ist aber sportlicher und jünger gestaltet. Im Leasing wird der Cupra Born in der größeren Version mit 204 PS starkem Elektromotor angeboten. Dabei schafft es der Hecktriebler in 7,3 Sekunden auf 100 km/h. Mit einer Batteriekapazität von 58 kWh kommt der Born auf eine Norm-Reichweite von 424 Kilometer, realistisch für die Praxis sind eher 350 Kilometer, bei Autobahntempo 130 kommt der Born etwa 250 Kilometer weit.
