Spetses | One of the Best Saronic Islands
The charming Greek Island of Spetses, part of the Saronic Islands , is a popular weekend destination. It is very close to Athens, making it a quick getaway for residents. The island flourished with trade in Medieval times, and the locals constructed elegant buildings that survive today. The town is large and ideal for long walks.
Spetses is a place of charm, traditional values, pine forest, and many visitors during the summer months. The streets are narrow, with a picturesque harbor and charming waterfront. There are no cars on the island.
The island has a warm, Mediterranean climate. Summer in Spetses is hot and sunny, like in most places in Greece, and temperatures range from 25°C to 38°C.

- Church of Panagia Armata: Perched atop a hill overlooking Spetses’ old port, the Church of Panagia Armata is a picturesque chapel with a distinctive white and yellow exterior. Beyond its charming appearance, this chapel holds historical significance, commemorating naval victories and serving as a symbol of faith for the island’s inhabitants.
- Hatziyiannis Mexis Mansion: Dating back over two centuries, the Hatziyiannis Mexis Mansion is a true architectural gem on Spetses. This stunning building features a high-ceilinged roof and a rich history. It was once the residence of Hatzigiannis Mexis, one of the island’s early governors. Today, it offers visitors a glimpse into the island’s past and the life of its prominent residents.

The monastery offers a serene atmosphere for reflection and a glimpse into the island’s spiritual heritage.
Things to do in Spetses
- Go to the beach. There are many beaches on the island, such as Agia Paraskevi Beach, Agia Marina Beach, Agioi Anargiri Beach, Kaiki Beach, Town Beach (Agios Mamas)
- Horseback ride. Greg’s Spetses Horses provides lessons as well as organized rides.
- Run a marathon. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the Spetsathlon in April (the most significant triathlon in Greece) and the Spetses Mini Marathon in October.
- Walk. Walking on Spetses is a delight because of its unique architecture, cobblestone streets, and fragrant gardens filled with jasmine and bougainvilleas.
- See Armata. This re-enactment of a naval battle takes place in September.
The best way to taste traditional cuisine is to visit local cafes, tavernas, and restaurants. One popular dish is souvlaki, which includes meats, seafood, or vegetables on a skewer. Try the traditional Horiatiki salad, also known as a village salad.
Note that there are no “Greek salads” anywhere in Greece unless you are at a tourist restaurant. The traditional salad usually includes tomatoes, olives, cucumbers, feta, and olive oil. And, since Spetses is an island, seafood plays a significant role in the cuisine. You’ll find fish, octopus, shrimp, and other seafood.
In addition to Spetses, you can visit Poros , Hydra , Aegina , and Agistri while sailing the Saronic Gulf on a Charter Itinerary .

Spetses – Things to Do
Scented with pine forests, aromatic herbs and oleander, Spetses transports you back to a gentle time when taking an evening stroll was the order of the day. Take a torch and head to Agios Anargyri beach in the west and swim in the famous Bekiri cave, where stalactites and stalagmites hang like candelabra wax. Ayia Paraskevi Beach, with its crystalline waters and hilly backdrop, is a beautiful place to drop anchor. Fancy something different? Book a horseback ride to Panagia Elonas with Greg’s Spetses Horses and admire the views from the beautiful church on top of the mountain.
Spetses – Gourmet Experience
With stunning sea views and elegant décor, On the Verandah, in the Poseidonion Hotel, is arguably one of the classiest dining experiences on the island. Try the smoked swordfish with orange and tuna ravioli. For more relaxed dining, try Clock, which specialises in pizzas, pasta and burgers, while Mourayo, on the water in the old harbour, serves excellent fresh fish and seafood. Akrogialia is perfect for a romantic dinner, with tables set on the beach at Kounoupitsa and a menu of top-notch seafood, such as grilled squid and shrimp pasta.
Spetses – Nightlife
Spetses has a vibrant nightlife scene, with many bars playing Greek music for their upmarket local clientele. Mayo Bar has a fabulous veranda overlooking the sea and serves excellent cocktails. Palms on the Verandah, at the famous Poseidonion Grand Hotel, has exquisite sea views and serves unique cocktails made from the finest ingredients. Spetses Yacht Charters
Explore spetses on your luxury yacht charter in greece.
Virtually undiscovered, with the horse-drawn carriage as the preferred mode of transport, the enchanting Spetses island offers curious yacht charter guests an authentic snapshot of Grecian luxury and history.
With its mystical sunsets, quaint, familiar feel, and pleasant demeanor, it’s hard to believe this island was also a major player in the War of Independence. Even still, its long naval history and reputation for being the place where the revolution flag was raised in the 1821 War of Independence remain apparent in the island’s proud residents and statuesque buildings.
At the center of the island, its town square sits timeless and idyllic; lined with grandiose villas, ancient churches, and local tavernas, and dotted with pedestrians smiling and laughing as they go for a leisurely stroll. Boasting an energetic and happy vibe, the island’s waterfront includes rows of luxurious yachts floating seemingly aimlessly in the Saronic Gulf; just around the corner from Spetses’ historic shipyards, where local workers still hammer away as they did during the War of Independence.
Set sail to Spetses on your private charter yacht, and discover its radiating history firsthand.

Spetses Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See
The House of Bouboulina : Once the home of Lascarina Bouboulina – recognized as being one of the most critical fighters in the 1821 War of Independence, and the first woman in Greek history to be awarded the rank of Admiral by the Russian Navy – today, the House of Bouboulina is a public museum. Since Lascarina first moved to Spetses in 1775, the island has had a unique connection to this Hellenic heroine. Having built her own fleet of three naval ships during the infamous war, allowing her to aid in the liberation of Nafplion and Tripoli, she has since been a household name on this Saronic island ; and her 300-year-old house remains to remind residents and visitors alike of her inherent bravery and skill.
The House of Hatzigiannis Mexis : Built in the late 18th century, the House of Hatzigiannis Mexis is a living memorial of more than 4,000 years of Spetses’ history. Today, the house serves as a working museum; putting significant items from the War of Independence, letters from Greek war heroes Kolokotronis and Athanasios Diakos, a folk art collection, and the relics of Bouboulina on display – giving travelers and locals alike the chance to take in the island’s exciting history.
Church of Panayia Armata : Overlooking the old port in Spetses, the quaint yellow and white Church of Panagia Armata is a symbol of Greece’s legendary defeat of the Ottoman fleet in the naval battle of September 1922. Built by Spetsiote captain Ioannis Koutsis in the early 19th century, the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary – claiming Greece’s victory in the war to be a miracle of her neverending grace. History aside, this church also boasts some of the best sunset views in Spetses, overlooking the entire town and harbor.
Cathedral of Agios Nikolaos : As the famed site where Spetses’ revolution flag was raised in 1821, symbolizing the island’s freedom, the Cathedral of Agios Nikolaos is a significant part of Spetsiote history. Overlooking one of the island’s most picturesque spots, the beautiful bay of Agios Nikolaos, this cathedral was also the haunted locale where Paul Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, was preserved in a barrel of rum for close to three years.
Vréllos : The Greek word for “paradise,” the pine-filled Vréllos is unarguably the island’s most captivating beach. The starting point for popular hikes to Profitis Elias, the highest point in Spetses, today, Vréllos invites travelers and locals alike to tan on its soft, white sand, wade through its calming waters, catch a glimpse of traditional, Spetsiote living, and as with most locations in the Saronic Gulf, take in its surreal horizon views.

Spetses Yacht Charter
Spetses is a wonderful playground for the global elite, Greek tycoons and yacht charter enthusiasts. It’s an island that has an old-world feel about it, a nautical charm and spectacular scenery. There’s a great mix of traditional and modern restaurants as well as beautiful beaches. The bars and boutiques range from modest to deluxe, all exuding a Greek-island bohemian atmosphere. Read the Essential Greece charter guide .
This lovely island, located in the Saronic Gulf, is one of the Saronic Island Groups that have been called the new Greek Riviera . Ask your captain to sail to Spetses from Athens or Piraeus where you’ll be welcomed into the port. At the port is the 100-year-old Poseidon Grand Hotel – an impressive sight that over the years has hosted many famous stars such as Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. The town has undergone a makeover and the marina has plenty of berths to accommodate Athenian weekenders along with luxury yachts on week-long charters.
The pale white buildings and orange roof tiles are the model of a Greek town and Spetses has avoided becoming a major tourist hotspot, instead attracting superyacht owners and luxury yacht charterers who rub shoulders with locals in the tavernas and cafes.
Learn the story of local war hero and legend Bouboulina, who has a museum and a statue in dedication in the harbour. After strolling around the town and visiting the stately chapels, hike along the trails or find your own stretch of uninhabited beach for sunbathing and excitement with the motorised water toys.
The hotels and restaurants on Spetses are mostly open in the summer months from May until October, and as a result chartering a superyacht gives you an added advantage at this location with all of your on board services and highly trained crew, there to personally serve you and your charter guests.
Take a walk via the intricate winding streets passing boutiques and the busy fish market. Along the way, admire the many cobbled lanes, barber shops and tavernas then when you reach the Old Port you’re sure to see the unique metal mermaid. There’s also an effigy of the Greek heroine Bouboulina who watches over the main port.
On the coast of Spetses are pebbled and sandy beaches, secluded coves and fantastic bays. These bays are ideal for all types of water sports, snorkelling and swimming. Starting around Easter, the island comes alive festivities and carry on until mid-October. In September, there’s a fantastic re-enactment or Armata of the island’s naval victory which took place in 1822. After this re-enactment, a sea battle takes place with the burning of an Ottoman warship, followed by a spectacular firework display.

If you have anchored in the old port, we strongly encourage a walk from there to Dapia (considered the liveliest area of the island). Observe the manors and relax in one of the numerous cafes located on the waterfront. Aftterwards, stroll to the famous Poseidon Hotel located at the end of the new port, where you can enjoy breakfast in the gorgeous garden with little tables and chairs situated right outside of the lobby. The dazzling view of the Saronic Gulf only adds to the whole experience.
Although it might sound touristic, it is really a great experience to hire a horse carriage in Spetses. Children are especially fond of these types of rides. The carriage will take you amongst the islands most colorful alleys and the horseman can show you important buildings and provide interesting historical information. Once you are finished with the ride and you return to the old port, we suggest you to visit the Spetses shipyards, where tradition meets art. Still active, the boat builders specialize in wooden boats and can produce various sizes according to the orders they may receive. Spetses is one of the largest shipbuilding locations of Greece and one of the few still operating until today. We encourage you to take the time to see the origins of the boats which gave the Greeks their independance!
Spetses has some of the best swimming locations available in the Saronic Gulf. This is especially true on the southern side of the island. Whether you are looking for a rocky cove, sandy beach or a turquoise colored bay surrounded by pine trees, you surely will not be disappointed. When sailing with one of our yachts you will have the chance to experience incredible scenery and pristine crystal clear waters. The seas are usually calm as well as the wind, making it an excellent island to explore all her secret coves, private swimming spots and beaches. Combined with the wonderful sights and awesome beaches, everyone is guaranteed to have a memorable time.
Traditional and Authentic
Aquamarine waters, gold, sandy beaches
Variety of venues, restaurants, boutiques
Rich history, interesting sights and attractions
Extremely picturesque
Exceptional seafood
Truly romantic atmosphere
Slightly overpriced
No water or electricity provided by the port
Mostly crowded during peak season
From my point of view, Spetses is one of the most breathtaking islands of the Saronic. Her amazing atmosphere and unique natural landscapes should enhance your overall experience while exploring on a sailing yacht or catamaran in the Greek Islands. The charming old port is a perfect place to seek homage from any big swells created by passenger ships bringing people to her shores. Here you can also decide to take a stroll and try the island's famous dish “Fish alla Spetsiota”, definitely a delicious treat after a day of sailing.

Amazing, amazing, amazing!!! We LOVED our time with the Yachtsailing.gr group!
We just got home from a truly magical one week trip through the Saronic Islands on the Yachtsailing.gr group's Oceanis 54 Blackjack yacht. We visited and explored six spectacular islands and countless beautiful bays in seven days (highlights included Hydra, Aegina, Porto Heli, Mandrila port, and Ermioni). There were two families of four traveling together (the four kids were ages 9-13), so a total of eight people on the boat plus our skipper and we never once felt crowded. It is a great boat for traveling with that many people (4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large main cabin, a huge deck to spread out on, plus the separate kipper's quarters including his own bathroom) - plenty of space for everyone
You can't go wrong if you charter with Maria and Eugene (and if you sail with George) so don't look any further! The hardest question will be which type of boat to select given their great pricing, large fleet, and variety of sailing routes. We will definitely be back as soon as we can. Thank you Yachtsailing.gr for making our sailing trip better than we ever imagined it could be! Cheers and hugs from Amy & George (from Australia) and Noortje & Marc (from Holland) and the kids!

“ Saronic islands and Peloponnesian coast! Trip of a life time! ”
We departed Athens and sailed Poros, Hydra, Hermano, Spetses, Methana, Epidaurus! An incredible adventure with our great Capitan Appo and really beautiful 42’catamaran! This is really is a trip of a lifetime, the islands are extremely beautiful, the food in every port was really exceptional! Let’s see favorite things… jockeying for spots in Hydra(you’ll know why you hired a skipper, but way too fun to watch) swimming in perfect blue lagoons every day, hiking the volcano in Methana, diving on the sunken city, my nephew catching a nice Amber Jack, getting a dolphin escort, getting some really great sailing days in and meeting really warm and engaging people in every port and all over Athens! Would I do it again, yes heading back again next year!

Beaches worth visiting
When visiting by sailing yacht or catamaran, Zogeria is one of the best beaches to anchor on the island. Surrounded by lush green pine trees and golden sand, which lead to sapphire waters, amaze all who visit this lovely beach. This is also a great place to relax and spent the night, because the water is smooth and the weather is calm most of the time. When you have had enough of the beach you can stop by the tavern and chapel located close by.
Agia Paraskevi
This is possibly the most beautiful beach on the island, with golden sand and a gorgeous green surroundings. It is an organized beach with a small beach bar serving snacks and refreshments. Here you may relax onboard, dive into the crystal clear waters, or simply take in the natural scenery.
Agia Marina
One of the most famous and crowded beaches of the island with amenities (sun beds, umbrellas) is located on the southeast side of Spetses. Long, sandy and pebbled beach with a beach bar where you can enjoy your coffee as well as have something for lunch.
Located on the south eastern segment of the island, this beach offers its exclusivity for those seeking more private moments bathing in the sea. Mainly accessible by boat, you will have the chance to relax and enjoy yourself in the presence of nature avoiding the many crowds present on more popular beaches on the island.
Spetsopoula
Spetsopoula is a gorgeous densely green island southeast of Spetses. It belongs to the Stavros Niarchos family, who was a shipping tycoon. Although it is prohibited to visit the island, it is a truly magnificent sight to see during your sails around Spetses.
Sites worth visiting
Mansion of laskarina bouboulina.
Laskarina Bouboulina was a Greek naval commander and heroine of the Greek War of Independence. She was born on the island of Spetses and is the most famous female in modern Greek history. She was a successful businesswoman, philanthropist and naval strategist remembered for her bravery and courage in leading Greek forces against the Ottoman Empire during the Greek War of Independence. She also provided financial support to the Greek cause being the first woman to command a warship in the Mediterranean. After her death, a monument was erected to pay tribute to her many accomplishments.
Cave of Bekiris
One of the most beautiful sights on the island, hidden from plain sight the cave will dazzle visitors with its beauty. Difficult to reach but accessible by boat, you will have the opportunity to enter and explore one of the most beautiful caves in Greece. Stalactites, stalagmites and crystal waters fill the interior and are a sight to behold. It is said that this cave was used to hide women and children from Turkish invaders. Some also believe that if two lovers drink from its waters they will forever be in love.
Lighthouse of the old Harbor
This is one of the oldest lighthouses in the country, it was first lit in 1837 and operated with oil. It has been automated with electricity since 1986 and still operates till this day. It is located on the right side of the old port and is surrounded by beautiful pine trees. We suggest going to take a look and the lighthouse as well as the excellent view on offer where it is located.
Armata Festival
The Armata Festival is an annual celebration that takes place in September to commemorate the Greek War of Independence. An important battle took place between the Greek and Ottoman navy in 1822, on the 8 th of September. During the festival, the town of Spetses celebrates with a parade, live music, traditional Greek food and festivities. One of the main spectacles is a recreated wooden ship prepared specifically for this occasion. The locals then set this boat alight in remembrance of this historical Greek victory.
Tastes of Spetses
Almond sweets.
Amigdalota is a traditional Greek sweet made from ground almonds, sugar and egg whites. It is often served at important events such as weddings, baptisms and other festive occasions. The dough is rolled into small balls and then deep-fried until golden-brown. Amigdalota is usually coated with a light dusting of powdered sugar and served with a glass of cold water. This is a delicious treat which should not be missed when visiting the Greek islands.
Fish alla Spetsiota
As seafood is one of the specialties of the island, there are plenty of seafood restaurants in Spetses that offer a variety of delicious dishes, ranging from fresh fish and seafood platters to traditional Greek recipes such as shrimp saganaki and fried calamari."Fish alla spetsiota" is a very special classical dish and is made with fish, garlic, onions, parsley, tomato sauce and white wine. The fish is usually pan-fried and served with the sauce over it. If you enjoy fish, this dish is definitely one you would not like to miss.
- During summer average temperatures usually range from 20° C to 30° C
- The island is generaly blessed with very pleasant weather and usually has calm seas.
- If it is quite windy try to check your fenders because most of the times there are big motor yachts entering the port
- Not so protected port in the Northern wind – Choose Porto Heli instead
- Nice anchorages that can protect you from the wind, our captains would be responsible to advise you

- Saronic Islands Yacht Charter Itinerary Greece #2: Athens, Alimos, Aegina, Ermioni, Spetses, Hydra, Poros, Epidaurus
- Charter Itinerary
Yacht Charter Day 0 – Arrive in Athens (Alimos), Greece
Yacht charter day 1 – alimos to aegina, yacht charter day 2 – aegina to ermioni, yacht charter day 3 – ermioni to spetses, yacht charter day 4 – spetses to hydra, yacht charter day 5 – hydra to poros, yacht charter day 6 – poros to epidaurus, yacht charter day 7 – epidaurus to alimos marina.
Note that the video, text, and images are only a suggestion, your broker and captain will advise on the feasibility of this itinerary for your season and yacht. The video and the images were not taken on the charter.
We start our journey in Alimos, a seaside settlement south of Athens. It’s a mere stone’s throw away from some of this city’s best sights, so we recommend arriving a few days early and using that time to explore a city the locals call Athina (Αθήνα).
If you stay in the centre of Athens you’ll only be a 20 minute taxi ride away from Alimos Marina and the start of your journey, so don’t worry about getting sidetracked. There are a number of beautiful 4 and 5 star hotels in Central Athens (we can help you with the booking process) including the aptly named Central Athens Hotel, the Hotel Metropolis, and the Herodion Hotel, all of which offer stunning views of the Acropolis.
You can enjoy the view from the terrace as you eat your breakfast, before setting out for a summer hike to see this historic building for yourself. After a day of sightseeing, descend those Acropolis steps and enjoy some local fare in one of the city’s many tavernas. Greek food is famous all over the world, but Athens is a diverse and multi-cultural city, so if Hellenic cuisine isn’t your thing then you’ll be able to find something that is.
If you fancy something a little less tiring (climbing those Acropolis steps is no mean feat) we recommend taking a tour of the local museums, parks and galleries—a plethora of which you’ll find in Central Athens. After you’ve explored the art and culture of one of the world’s oldest cities, pay a visit to the Olympia Theatre, which hosts opera and ballet performances, or the Megaron, where you can be serenaded by Greek musicians.
And why not finish the day with a true Athenian treat? The IceRoll Monastiraki is also located near the centre of Athens and serves a host of delicious, freshly made ice cream treats that will have you salivating all night. This is the highest rated eatery on TripAdvisor and one that deserves every one of its 5-stars. It also does take-out and stays open until the early hours, so you can grab a box of goodies and take them back to your hotel room for a midnight feast.
Once you’ve rested for the night then it’s time to wake up nice and early and book a taxi to Alimos Marina on Athina’s coast (we can help to arrange transport if needed). This is where your Greek Odyssey begins.
Once the arranged transport picks you up and takes you to Alimos Marina then our charter begins in earnest. You will be introduced to the captain and to the yacht, and once you’re familiar with the boat and its crew then it’s time to set sail for Aegina.
It’s a relatively short journey of just 18 nautical miles, but that’s more than enough time to soak up some of that glorious Greek sunshine on the sundeck, or to get lost in the majesty of the turquoise water below. When you land in Aegina it’s time to explore the first island on your trip, one that often serves as both the first and last port of call for sailing charters in the Saronic region.
Like most Greek islands, Aegina is steeped in myth and legend. Its name comes from the Greek myth of Aegina who gave birth to Aeacus, a mythological king of the island, and is said to be the great-grandmother of the warrior Achilles. It also played a major role in the real history of Greece, and signs of this history remain even today in the Church of Theotokos, the Agios Nektarios Monastery, the ruins of Palaiochora and the Temple of Aphaia.
All charters have their own chef onboard who will ensure you’re well-fed throughout your journey. You’ll have freshly prepared food at your beckon call whenever you want it, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy the local restaurants and sweet shops. Speaking of which, after you’ve enjoyed a big meal why not drop by Mourtzis Traditional Sweets in Panayioti Irioti. This is a traditional Greek sweet shop that is packed to the rafters with delicious local produce, from natural Greek honey and Greek spirits to jars upon jars of chocolates, nuts, dried fruits, and more.
Aegina is a small island with a laid-back vibe and a methodic pace. There’s no need to rush, no need to panic—everything is in walking distance, the locals are pleasant and friendly, and the shopkeepers either understand English, or are well versed in the multilingual art of pointing, gesturing, and smiling emphatically.
As the evening closes in it will no doubt dawn on you just how diverse and beautiful the Greek islands are. There’s a good chance you spent the previous night in a luxury hotel, enjoying expensive linen and PPV television as the noise and chaos of Athens buzzed outside your window. But now your island odyssey has taken on a more ambient atmosphere as you stare at the clear skies and bathe in the silence of this historic town.
You’re less than twenty miles away from one of the biggest and busiest cities in Europe, but it feels like another world entirely.
After a breakfast of your choosing (from smoked fish, capers and sparkling wine to pastries and a cup of coffee—anything goes) it’s time to set sail for Ermioni, which is about 34 nautical miles away from the island of Aegina.
It’s the longest journey of the charter, but those miles will fly by as you plan your itinerary for the tiny town of Ermioni. This town is much smaller than Aegina and has a population to match, but that population explodes during the tourist season, so don’t be surprised to encounter a wealth of cultures and languages as you step offshore.
This is the perfect time to spend a day on the beach. There are more things to do in Ermioni—it has tavernas, museums, and cultural sights—but it’s best known for its calm beaches. There are also some water sports to partake in, and if you have a need to explore then you can set off for the ancient ruins just a short hike away.
After a short stay in Ermioni on Day 3, you’re up bright and early on day 4 for a trip to Spetses, which is just 10 nautical miles away. The short journey will provide you with ample opportunity to catch-up on your modern Greek history—we’re sure the crew will be happy to fill you in over breakfast or lunch.
Spetses played an integral role in the Greek War of Independence. It provided a hideout for refugees escaping the Turkish invasion and was also the home of Laskarina “Bouboulina” Pinotsis, one of Greece’s best-known heroines.
You can learn more about “Bouboulina” in the island’s official museum, which is actually located in the heroine’s old mansion, and there is also a statue of her in Spetses town. You explored some ancient Greek history in Athens and Aegina, it’s only fair that you explore some modern Greek history as well.
Spetses is an affluent island with some great bars, cafes and tavernas. Some of the outdoor restaurants provide panoramic views of the island and the sea, and you can also find plenty of delicious cocktails and Greek spirits.

Spetses view of town from dock
After a day of feasting on local history and culture in Spetses, it’s time to set sail again for Hydra, an island that was voted the best in all of Greece in 2007, and one that attracts scores of domestic and international tourists every season.
Many non-Greeks know “Hydra” as a monster with multiple heads. This monster is actually said to have resided in Lerna, and gets its name from the ancient Greek for “Water”, which is where the island of Hydra also gets its name.
This island is awash with natural beauty, making day 4 the perfect time to go for a hike. But you can leave your walking boots back in the boat because the island’s horses will do all of the work for you. Harriets Hydra Horses gives tourist a horseback tour of the island and caters for experienced riders as well as newcomers. You can hop on the back of a giant stead and stride proudly around the perimeter of the island, or you can straddle a donkey and go old-school.
Hydra is small, but there’s a lot to see and do and you’ll never want to leave. So, prepare for a late night on the beach sipping cocktails and eating your fill of Greek food as prepared by your own personal chef.
After a late start, it’s time to cover the 12 nautical miles that will take you to Poros, a town that is split in two. Poros consists of two islands that are connected by a bridge. Sphairia is where the town center is located, and Kalaureia is where you’ll find the majority of its residents.
This island is covered in natural fauna and is the richest and most naturally diverse island you will encounter on this journey. In ancient times it served as a key island in Roman and Byzantine trading routes, before becoming an important strategic point for the Venetians and the Greek revolutionaries.
The Temple of Poseidon will give you some insight into this island’s history. It’s steeped in history, and it also provides some gorgeous views of the Peloponnese. This is where the great orator Dimosthenis is said to have killed himself after failing in a revolt against Alexander the Great.
The Archaeological Museum of Poros will provide even more insight to the island’s history, and after visiting here you can head back to the beach to enjoy the drink, food, and history, while conversing with the tourists and locals.
Don’t worry if you’re not feeling up to a cultural day-trip, just rest, relax, and put your feet-up—you’ll get more than your fair share of culture and history on Day 6.
On day 6 you’ll cover 21 nautical miles to get to Epidaurus, where a day-trip filled with wonder awaits. As soon as you dock we recommend taking a trip inland to the Epidaurus Ancient Theatre. It’s a ruin for the most part, but the theatre itself remains and is one of the most mesmerizing ancient ruins in all of Greece. This is a must if you didn’t make the trip to the Acropolis at the start of your charter.
The Epidaurus Ancient Theatre will give you an insight into just how advanced the Ancient Greeks were and how committed they were to the arts. It’s a 14,000 seater open-air stadium that has some breathtaking natural acoustics and still plays host to lectures and performances.
It is actually considered to be the most perfect ancient Greek theatre where acoustics and aesthetics are concerned, and you’ll see, hear, and experience this for yourself when you visit.
There is an archaeological museum nearby and some other ancient wonders to enjoy as well. The ancient Greeks brought culture and theatre to the world, the modern Greeks are best known for bringing olive oil and other great produce, so once you’ve seen all that the ancient world had to offer, head to the nearby Epidaurus Olive Oil Domain to see what the modern one has in store.
By the time you make it back to the shore you’ll be ready for a nightcap. Head for one of the seaside bars, pick out a table by the beach, and enjoy a glass of ouzo and a Greek meze as you ruminate on the penultimate day of your Greek adventure.
This is the final day. Grab yourself a hearty breakfast on the boat, toast your fellow adventurers with a glass of sparkling wine or orange juice, bid farewell to your captain and crew, and then head back to the South of Athens.
Your Greek charter has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean your Greek odyssey is over. There are more charters to explore, more islands to see, and more facts about ancient and modern Greek history to learn.
Maybe you’ll see those crew members again.

1 Day itinerary to Spetses!
Spetses is one of the most cosmopolitan and with historical importance islands of Greece and especially in the Saronic Gulf. The island got its current name from the Venetians after they named it “Izola di Spezia” which means Island of perfumes, because of the many flowers that existed. It is located close to the popular tourist resort of Porto Heli. The island of Bouboulina, a hero of the Greek revolution, is famous for its neoclassical architecture, wonderful beaches, and impressive locations that are offered for exploration. A daily cruise to this island is the best way to explore it! Therefore, here is what you can do!
Do you want to explore the historical island of Spetses and find its beauty? book now to rent a luxury private yacht, equipped with everything you need! Take your vacation to another level!
Firstly, you should visit the port of the city, Dapia , with its famous square, a meeting point for residents and visitors. In the center of Poseidon Square dominates the imposing statue of Laskarina Bouboulina, a heroic figure that played a determinant role in the Greek revolution. The Chancellery, located on the edge of the port of Dapia, has a long history. Before 1770 it served as a gathering place for the island’s elite, while later it housed the City Hall.
The alleys of the city of Spetses are characterized by very interesting traditional architecture, with neoclassical houses, pebbled courtyards, colorful fragrant flowers, and beautiful balconies. In Spetses, cars are prohibited and the necessary transportations are done by motorcycles, bicycles, taxis and horse-drawn carriages. During your stay on the island do not forget to get to know Spetses on foot!
Moreover, Spetses has beautiful beaches with clear, turquoise waters . Sandy or pebbly, almost all of them are organized with umbrellas and sunbeds, while many have a beach bar to enjoy your drinks. In some, you can even do water sports! The beaches you can see either on foot or by a private yacht are:
- Agios Mammas : The nearest beach in Chora to Spetses. It has a long sandy beach and shallow waters and it is usually preferred by families with children.
- Agios Nikolaos : Beautiful, a small beach near the old port. It has cool waters and sand and is suitable for those who seek peace without having to leave the city.
- Agia Marina : One of the most cosmopolitan and famous beaches of Spetses. It has many facilities for guests, shops for food and drink, and infrastructure for water sports.
- Kounoupitsa : Beautiful, a small beach near the port of Spetses, with crystal clear waters and golden sand.
- Anargyrios School: Famous beach of the island with blue waters and pebbles. It is organized, with umbrellas, infrastructure for water sports, beach bars, and taverns.
- Agia Paraskevi : Probably the most impressive beach in Spetses. The turquoise, crystal clear waters, and the rich vegetation that surrounds it compose a magnificent setting. It has a bar and it is accessible on foot and by boat.
- Ligoneri : Everything you need for calm moments and isolated dives. It has pebbles and sand, is not organized, and is approached by a dirt road.
- Agioi Anargyroi : It is the largest and perhaps the most popular beach on the island. It is located in the west and it offers sand, clear blue waters, umbrellas, and water sports infrastructure.
- Xylokeriza : It is located in the south of Spetses and is organized with umbrellas. It has pebbles and a rocky bottom that is suitable for diving.
- Zogeria : One of the most beautiful beaches in Spetses. The dense vegetation, the pines that reach almost the water, and the turquoise waters will enchant you. Ideal for those looking for more relaxed moments.
- Vrellos : Relatively small beach with wonderful crystal-clear waters and pebbles. It is fully organized and has a beach bar.
In addition, the island of Spetses is ideal for activities , with the homonymous settlement gathering most of the attractions. We suggest you go around the whole island, to discover beautiful landscapes and beaches and to taste delicious local food . During your vacation in Spetses do not miss to do:
- Carriage ride to the old and new port in Dapia to admire the impressive architecture of the neoclassical buildings. Be sure to visit the most famous sights, such as the Bouboulina Museum, the lighthouse at the port, and the Mansion of Sotiri Anargyros.

Luxury yacht sinks after fire; explosions heard on video
LOS ANGELES ( KABC ) — A high-end yacht docked at Marina del Rey sank after catching on fire Wednesday night.
The fire in Basin A was first reported around 8:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters responded and poured water on the 100-foot vessel from the dock at the end of Bora Bora Way.
Witness video captured the sounds of several explosions as firefighters battled the flames.
But the interior flames appeared to resist the water hoses and the boat continued sustaining damage. It quickly began taking on water from the hoses as the flames, possibly fueled by a gas source, continued to burn.
The yacht began listing, and by around 10:30 p.m. firefighters were ordered to evacuate the dock. The boat began slowly overturning onto its side and sinking into the water.
There were no major injuries reported. Two people on board exited safely, though one reported a minor cut to the arm.
There was no word on how the fire started. Authorities said it’s possible ammunition was on board the vessel.
The boat is named The Admiral, but the identity of the owner was not immediately available.

I work as a private chef on board a luxury yacht in the British Virgin Islands. Here's what I make for my guests in a day.
- Hannah Staddon works as a private chef on Mucho Gusto, a luxury yacht in the British Virgin Islands.
- With her husband, Dominic Baldzuhn, the yacht's captain, they take guests on weeklong trips.
- From sushi to wagyu steaks, here's everything Staddon makes for her guests.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Hannah Staddon, a 31-year-old private chef who works onboard the Mucho Gusto , a luxury charter in the British Virgin Islands. It has been edited for length and clarity.
I've been in the industry for around 13 years. I started as a yacht stewardess in the Mediterranean. I worked as a stew for about three years before gravitating toward the kitchen.
At one point, a chef I was working with didn't enjoy baking — but I was pretty good at it. That jumpstarted my interest in cooking, and I saved up through another season to put myself through chef's school back in South Africa, where I'm from.
I worked as a crew chef for a 160-foot yacht for a bit, but I realized I didn't even really like crew cooking because they just made food in big batches.
I cooked for 10 to 14 people daily for about four or five months. But I was getting burned out, and I wanted to be creative and make small, beautiful things.
So, my partner and I started looking for a boat together, and we ended up working together on board Mucho Gusto.
It's been seven years, and we haven't looked back.
My day in a nutshell
I get up at about 6 a.m. As soon as I wake up, I start prepping pastries, laying out the tables, and getting our guests coffee.
I usually make a continental spread for breakfast with homemade granola yogurt, fruit plates, and pastries. Then, I'll have a hot option for the day, like eggs benedict or waffles.
I like cooking light and healthy food. So I do spreads, sometimes with homemade focaccia, and then a protein, depending on the guests' preferences.
I also try to source most of my produce from local farmers and fishermen.
Lunches vary between plated salads and buffet-style courses. I whip up homemade ice cream, so there's always a selection available for dessert at lunch.
I start prepping dinner at about 5 p.m. and usually serve it at around 7 p.m.
Depending on how active the guests have been, I may serve a little snack plate before dinner, like some fresh fruits or a charcuterie board.
Related stories
By about 7 p.m., once all the guests have showered and are ready for dinner, I'll have set the table. Dominic, meanwhile, serves sundown cocktails.
Unless guests request a lighter meal, we usually do three courses — starters, mains, and desserts. I've gotten good reviews for my sushi spreads, in particular.
My homemade pasta is also generally a winner.
Sometimes, I make black pepper and truffle pasta with sauteed mushrooms and a big wagyu steak. People go nuts for that, so I must be doing something right.
We have an age limit of 12 on board the yacht. But at that age, many kids still have a limited palate, so food looks like chicken nuggets and chips or pizza all week. They generally only eat maybe two or three different meals.
Generally, mums communicate their preferences to me. So, I ensure that chicken nuggets and chips are stocked on board and heat them 20 minutes before meals.
After dessert, we clean up, stack the dishwasher, and prep for the next day. If I need to make focaccia dough or I'm doing cinnamon buns the next morning, I've got to make all the dough that evening.
After that, I can typically go to bed, which could be any time between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
Better than other restaurant jobs
Something I've enjoyed about the job is that I get to be a lot more involved with what's happening outside the kitchen,
If you're confined to working in a kitchen all day, you can feel detached from what happens outside it. And in a restaurant kitchen, you're often making the meal you've been told to make, as opposed to getting to be creative.
That's different on a yacht. I get to understand the guests and build relationships with them. And that's my favorite part of the job.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily
15 people were rescued and one body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, by andrea rosa and nicole winfield | the associated press • published august 19, 2024 • updated on august 19, 2024 at 6:21 pm.
British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.
Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.
One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.
“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.
The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.
Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.
“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”
He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.
“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.
Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.
Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”
Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.
Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.
The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.
The fraud accusations represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.
The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.
“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.
The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.
The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.
AP writers Danica Kirka and Sylvia Hui contributed from London.
