Tlc 19 is a 19 ′ 0 ″ / 5.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Dudley Dix and built by Nebe Boats (SA) starting in 1988.

Drawing of Tlc 19

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Around the dam or around the world

~ Easily handled weekender ~ Performance for racing ~ Accommodation for family weekending ~ Towing with family car ~ Small enough for children to participate meaningfully ~ Basis of only open boat circum-navigation in history

The cockpit is large and comfortable, with 1.75m seats long enough to sleep most of the family. Hubby may have to let his feet hang over the transom if he wants to sleep in the open. There is a large lazarette locker in the port quarter for sails, outboard motor etc. The aft end of the cockpit well is open through the transom for quick draining and to give access to the swim platform.

The hull form is very much like a mini BOC racer with shallow underbody, almost plumb bow and broad, flat stern sections. It is very efficient both upwind and down. There are planing boards to extend the sailing waterline aft, with the transom hung rudder mounted in a V-shape cut-out. The moulded-in boarding platforms do away with the need for a swim ladder and are a magic place to sit when sailing in protected waters.

Below decks she has comfortable sitting headroom with plenty of hip room over all berths. The companion hatch is in two sections, of which the aft section can be slid forward by itself or the two can slide together. This allows the interior to be opened up in good weather, also giving standing head room to the galley.

She has four adult size single berths which double as settees and the forward berths convert to a double. Due to the plumb bow there is plenty of beam in the forward sections of the hull to give more foot room to the double berth than will be found in many much larger boats. All berths are 1,95m (6'4") long.

The galley has room for a two burner stove and with a storage bin behind. The table can seat four adults comfortably but they will have to be very good friends to spend more than a day or two together in a yacht of this size. She is better suited to a couple with one or two small children.

There is space below the galley for a small chemical toilet or, in the fixed keel version, it can be stowed under the forward end of the cockpit. There is also the alternative of an enclosed heads for those who want such a feature, with the loss of a quarter berth.

The TLC 19 is a compact but comfortable getaway home for a couple or small family, with performance to keep even the racing man happy. Although designed for construction from female moulds, she could also be built by a skilled amateur in sandwich GRP.

This custom version (above) of the TLC 19 is the only open boat to have sailed around the world. Anthony Steward circum-navigated "NCS CHALLENGER" ("ZULU DAWN") from Cape Town during 1991/92. Follow this link to the story of his incredible open boat voyage around the world .

A custom open version of the TLC 19 was used by Anthony Steward in accomplishing the first ever open boat circumnavigation of the world, in 1991/92. To date he remains the only person to have completed such a voyage. He endured tremendous hardship during the voyage, including being shipwrecked on a deserted island in the Indian Ocean.

Do not expect to do the same voyage in a stock TLC 19 but consider his achievement an indication of the seaworthiness of this little boat.

Please note that our plan prices include for adding imperial measurements to our metric designs if needed by the buyer.

Hirundo 750

Hirundo is trailerable, with her 2.5 meters of maximum beam and lifting keel; she can be considered on the heavy edge of a trailerable sailboat, but this feature may help homebuilders to keep down costs in expensive and crowded marinas, choosing where and when launch the sailboat.

Chined hull for the highest stability, vertical lifting keel, trailerable, suitable for club racing or cruising (two interior versions) , hull in plywood and epoxy with the radius chine system, sparkling performances while sailing and reasonable interiors for coastal cruising.

idea 850 building plans

Idea 850 is a fast paced cruiser-racer: wide beam , generous sailplan and light displacement make her a really fast boat; she can be built in wood & epoxy strip planking for an uncompromised quality and strength. This small rocket packs also huge interiors for 5-6 people, and every aspect of building is highly detailed in the drawings, as always.

Review of Dix TLC19

Basic specs., sailing characteristics.

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Dix TLC19 is 2.41, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Dix TLC19 is about 83 kg/cm, alternatively 466 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 83 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 466 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 19.28

Our first and best selled plan suited for homebuilders.

IDEA 19 originates in 2005 as a modification of Dudley Dix’s TLC 19, a small GRP trailerable sailboat; at the end of the work the only things left from the original project were hull lines, every other aspect of the project was refined, boosted up, and modernized and the plans were converted to a modern wood-plywood and epoxy building system. IDEA19  is a 6m fast paced trailerable sailboat; she can be built by homebuilders in both GRP and wood-plywood & epoxy resin, with strip planking system for hull, and plywood “stitch and glue” system for cockpit, deck and cabin; plans are suited for homebuilders ranging from absolute beginners to intermediate;

hull is a good balance between a quite full bow, sleek amidship lines and a flat and large transom; the boats have achieved a huge amount of miles sailed, both cruising and racing, in all conditions, including several nasty squalls; performance are very sparkly, and the cockpit is surprisingly dry and sound for a small sailboat, with fair and predictable reactions; she has proved to be a tough competitor in club racing (GPH approx. 740 for ORC club rating).

IDEA 19 plans grew in these years as a “family“ of sailboats: you can build her in a long cabin version or in a shorter one, with a really huge cockpit, both in sandwich GRP or in wood & epoxy resin, with retractable or fixed keel, with plywood chined or solid wood round cabin; plans are highly detailed, including all aspects of building and rigging the boat.

The boats launched have sailed thousand miles in these years, in a wide range of environments, from lakes to the open sea, and in a wide range of activities, from family cruising to club racing ; they took beatings in harsh sea conditions up to 30 knots of wind, clocked speed in excess 18 knots planing downind; the boat proved to be a study, forgiving, fun and fast pocket rocket , a very good choice given her overall dimensions.

A lot of building pictures and whole building sequences are on the web, which is something that can mark the difference and speed up the boat building process.

19 Seaway a good choice?

  • Thread starter Andyf32
  • Start date Sep 5, 2012

Looking for some advice on what boat is right for me. Here are my criteria: 1. Under 20 feet 2. Self bailing 3. semi dry ride 4. Open boat / minimal fore deck 5. 20 - 25 knot capability 6. Easy cleaning boat - no cushions etc 7. decent height gunnels - safe for kids I like the look of the 19 seaway but not the 17. The 19 is tempting, do they all tend to get the stringer rot issues? I had tried to buy the 152 Shaw Yachts that had the craigslist ad linked here in the for sale section but it sold out from under me. The boat will be used primarily in Long Island sound. Thanks in advance for any suggestions tips you may have.

Beautiful little rig Tuna!

CEShawn

I want a skiff project!!!!!!

BOSBoatMan

Looks like the South River to me...or no?

Tunascapes, Your project is the one that got me looking at the Seaway 19. I love the simple, clean, neat look. Thanks for the performance information. I was wondering what kind of power would give me those type of numbers.

RKrough

As a comparison my 19' Midland (similar to the Seaway) tops out at 25 mph on a lake with a 1987 60hp two stroke with two people on board and 18 gallons of fuel. The boats with stringer issues are mostly around 30 years old. If it takes 30 years for the stringers to rot out . Rebuilding one should be good for another 30 years.

I was going to put a 90 ETEC on my Leblanc 16'10" by 8'1"...but after looking at ye getting 38 mph @ WOT, I am going to have to reconsider. I get all nervous going that fast....!

PS Love that console...is that original? Did 3A Marine in Hingham install that beautiful engine of yours?

The reason I went with the 90 originally is that it is the same motor and cubic inches as the 75. I would think there is very little difference in the power of the two. Console is not original. That was a new purchase from eastern boats. They bought the 19 mold when seaway folded.

I owned a 2002 Eastern Seaway for 10 years. Wonderful boat. So easy to maneuver, cheap on gas, Top speed 28 knows with a 90 Honda. However, I am surprised the above owner never gets wet in chop. I had bow spray rails and can recall many a day getting soaked in stiff breeze with chop. Still it was a super boat.

Boatbeerme, I was wondering about that. I see a lot of them with dodgers so I figured they were a somewhat wet boat.

Andyf32, the bow dodger kept the bow dry but didn't help me any at the helm station. People use their boats for different things-Because I trailered I figured if it was a messy day I would not bother going out. The best thing about the 19' was the versatility, as it was at home at Lake Winnipesaukee, Martha's Vineyard, Merrimack River, the Cape- so easy to launch, drive, and tow.

Here's a nice 19' Seaway for you! The price is right! 19 FT. SEAWAY DOWN EAST

Eastporter, I saw that one but it is a little further away than I would like. Logistics of getting it home etc. But thanks for keeping your eyes open for me.

Scuppers Hey 'Tuna, I have to redo my scupper area on my pointer 19... Did you do yours like the new seways?
