New Admiral Sail sailing yacht WAVE 38 designed by Philippe Briand

Written by Zuzana Bednarova
The Admiral Sail “Wave” superyacht series has been officially introduced at the Monaco Yacht Show 2014. This Series is being developed together with Philippe Briand Ltd., one of the most prominent yacht design studios in the world. It will include yachts from 38 up to 60 meters, all to be made of aluminium.
After having entered the sailing yacht market with the Silent 76 sailing yacht Gigreca , The Italian Sea Group felt it was already time to move forward and go bigger, well over 30 meters.
In this way the shipyard can capitalize the huge know-how and experience in the aluminum construction also on sailing yachts.
Of course the company knows this market to be a niche but they also know that the real players are not many and they do want to introduce something different, seen by a different perspective.
Admiral Sail Wave 38 Yacht
So far the 38 meter model has been developed in details and she truly is an outstanding sailing yacht.
Here are some comments from the designer, Philippe Briand:
“When we have read the requirements of Admiral sail for the design of a new sailing yacht, we were pleasantly surprised and immediately motivated.
First of all, I admire all entrepreneurs who want to build sailing yachts as we all know the technical challenges are bigger than for motor yachts and the business side is also much tougher.
The Italian Sea Group team explained that they wanted to build a sailing yacht that would be a beautiful holiday platform for family and friends.
The team mentioned comfort, external deck spaces, a very protected cockpit, aft deck terrace, performance, smart lines and fun to use. Those elements are high on the list of many potential yachtsmen. There is to our knowledge no existing 38m sailing yacht, delivering all those features.
The key element lies in the naval architecture and structure of the hull. We have designed a beamier hull at midships and a wider section aft. This is the trend of the last successful generation of racing sailing yachts and those yachts have proven to be very efficient. The huge advantage given by this modern and fast shape is the volume and deck space created.
We used the volume inside to design an extremely wide and comfortable owner’s stateroom aft. The general layout offers two more guests cabins and a multifunctional space (office, salon, or third guest cabin). The crew quarters are LY3 compliant, with accommodations for 4 crew and the captain.
The layout of the deck space is novel. The cockpit is protected by a hard top, with a sliding bimini, and can be fully protected, with retractable windowpanes. The cockpit becomes the formal dining area on deck at night!
The large aft terrace is another feature of this 38m yacht. It procures a protected sunbathing platform with access to the sea and is also connected with the owner’s stateroom.
The exterior design is largely part of the Admiral‘s DNA. The yacht is dynamic and will be very responsive. Admiral sail Wave 38 will be a fast and fun sailing yacht and a meeting place for those who love wind and water.”
The Admiral Sail Wave 38 yacht will be rigged with carbon mast and carbon furling boom with provision for autotacking jib, slightly overlapping foresail, staysail and downwind sail.

38 Meter Indonesian Sailing Pinisi AMANDIRA 125' Length On Deck Click for Larger Image Exterior Profile | Interior Profile | Main Deck | Guest Deck | Alt Guest Deck | Crew Deck Perspective Forward | Perspective Aft | Sails Perspective Copyright 2008 - 2016 Michael Kasten The owner's original name for this vessel was SAMPAJAY . Since the vessel was fully commissioned in 2015, she sails as the AMANDIRA under charter to Aman Resorts, whose aim is always to offer the highest level of luxury to those who have the good fortune to join them onboard. The 38m design shown here is a larger and greatly improved version of my 36m Pinisi, Silolona design (developed in 2001). It is closely styled after my 50m Sailing Pinisi design (developed in 2007) and my 30m Pinisi, Datu Bua design (developed in 2008). They have all been modeled after the traditional Indonesian Sailing Pinisi. The AMANDIRA is the most recent of the fleet, and brings forth the best features from among our prior Pinisi and KLM designs. First though, a clarification is in order... It is common among charter operators to quote a vessel's length in terms of everything that "sticks out" even including the flag pole...! However that practice is incorrect and is quite misleading. For example on the AMANDIRA the length from the tip of the bowsprit to the end of the farthest object astern is approximately 52 meters, which is likely to be the length most often quoted. But it is the length of the "boat part" that is of primary importance to the naval architect; to the builder; and to the classification society. This is ordinarily taken as being the length over the range of the weather deck, which in this case is 38 meters...! Quite a difference...! Particulars are: 52 Meters "Sparred Length" 38 Meters Length on Deck (125') 30 Meters Loaded WL Length 10 Meters Moulded Beam 3.8 Meters Loaded Draft 372 Metric Tons Loaded Displacement The emphasis of this design has been to create a highly traditional sailing Pinisi for construction by local craftsmen in Indonesia; to involve worldwide standards with regard to structure and stability; to provide sailing performance in keeping with a traditional sailing vessel; and in so doing to provide a degree high luxury to the charter guests who travel onboard. AMANDIRA - Click for Larger Image The Interior Layout For the AMANDIRA , comfort and privacy have been my primary goals in designing the interior layout. At 38m length on deck, this design is large enough to accommodate four luxury Guest Cabins below forward, plus a large Owner's Cabin on deck aft. On deck amidships there is a comfortable Guest Lounge. Each cabin has its own private en-suite head and shower, and all accommodation spaces are air conditioned. For comfortable sailing in the tropics, excellent ventilation has been given the highest priority. To best understand the vessel's interior please see the layout views in the links given above and the Interior Profile below. The following walk-through should clarify whatever is not readily apparent in those images... AMANDIRA Interior Profile - Click for Larger Image Below Decks Right forward below the main deck is the forepeak which contains a Chain Locker and Bosun's Locker. Aft of that is a Tour-Guide or Stewardess Cabin and Laundry. Just aft of the Laundry are four luxury-sized Guest Staterooms, each with en-suite Head and Shower. Aft of the Guest Suites is the Engine Room, sized to contain the various support systems for chartering, including two main generators, a 'pony' generator, dive compressor, large capacity reverse osmosis system for fresh water, pumps, electrical panels, etc. Aft of the Engine Room are the Galley and Crew Cabins. In all, accommodations are provided for 14 crew. Aft of the Crew Cabins on the Galley-deck is a Cool-Room for food supplies. AMANDIRA Guest Deck Layout - Click for Larger Image Main Deck The forward Main Deck is the primary socializing area during the day. At night it is a favorite place to party and to sleep under the stars. Just aft of amidships on the Main Deck is a Lounge for guest dining that is protected from the weather. The Lounge contains the on-board entertainment system and a large flat-screen display. A stairway leads directly from the Lounge forward and down to the Guest Suite hallway below. Aft of the Lounge and a git higher higher up is the Bridge. From the Aft Deck, a stairwell leads down to the Galley and Crew Cabins. This stairwell also provides ready access to the engine room from the Bridge. Right aft within the Aft House is a large Owner's Cabin, opening onto the privacy of the aft deck. Forward of the Owner's Cabin is a generous Head and Shower that spans the full width of the Deck House. AMANDIRA Main Deck Layout - Click for Larger Image Sails, Power, Range The sail rig is relatively "modern" by comparison to the usual Indonesian Pinisi, even though it has a quite traditional appearance. The rig is taller than would usually be the case among Indonesian vessels, which allows for a more effective sail area. The spars were designed as steel tube. With tapers at the ends they appear to any casual observer to be traditional wooden spars. Steel however provides the strength needed in order to achieve adequate sail area and is quite easily fabricated. The sails are all modern Dacron, halyards are three strand soft laid Dacron, halyard and sheet blocks have wood cheeks and ball bearings for low friction hauling, and in general the rig is arranged for easy handling. Unlike the traditional Bugis schooners which use "standing" gaffs and loose footed sails that are brailed up to the mast and gaff, we have instead arranged for the gaffs to be hauled aloft Western style. In this way the sails can remain bent onto the spars, allowing the sails to be very easily reefed. With booms on all primary sails, there is no drama when tacking. A generous "crosstrees" platform is placed at the base of each topmast, allowing safe handling of the tops'ls as well. With robust galvanized steel standing rigging, this is indeed "modern" by local Indonesian standards - the objective being to have good sailing performance and easy handling. For calm spots... the engine is sized for approximately 10.5 to 11 knots under power. The engine is an 830 hp Yanmar - a heavy duty slow turning industrial-strength marine diesel manufactured for the SE Asian market. Fuel tankage is approximately 30,700 liters. Range under power will be between 1,950 and 2,400 NM (depending on vessel speed). But having been designed for top performance under sail, range is essentially unlimited. More Information...? An interesting article on our work with these vessels appeared in the New York Times, called The Traditional Pinisi - And Then Some . And Connoisseur's website calls AMANDIRA The Dreamboat of Indonesia . As an Aman Resorts vessel AMANDIRA will no doubt be appearing often in the yachting press of Asia. For another taste of what is possible with these craft, please see our 36m Dunia Baru web page where you will find several outstanding as-built images. If this or a similar Pinisi / luxury sailing yacht is of interest, we offer a thorough design service. Our preference is to take advantage of traditional Indonesian boatbuilding methods to the maximum extent possible, and to bring the structure up to Classification Society standard. We offer our custom design services so that we can modify any of these vessels to suit a variety of requests. For more information about the design and building process that we recommend please see the following links. If you would like to start such a project, please inquire . MM38 // Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design
Malcolm mckeon yacht design unveils the 38m sailing yacht concept mm38.
The MM38 has been developed in collaboration with the brokerage company Ocean Independence for comfortable bluewater sailing but with a generous sail plan to perform also in light winds. The deckhouse lines are very close to the design of the 33m MISSY. The hull is also inspired by the previous award-winning designs RIBELLE and LIARA . The sloop-rigged boat welcomes up to eight guests in four cabins—furthermore, crew accommodation for up to six people. A telescope keel reduces the draft from six meters to four meters.
The forward area has a bay for a tender with a length of six meters that can be transformed into a shaded dining cockpit. Side ladder and platform makes it easy to enter the yacht from the tender. A fold-down swimming platform is at the stern.
“A fixed bimini with raise and lower side screens provides all-weather protection to the main cockpit, and the bimini top itself has a retractable ‘sun roof’ panel.”

How to transit the Suez Canal by yacht
- September 26, 2024
Journalist and yacht delivery skipper Ben Lowings takes a look at the dos and do nots of transiting the Suez Canal safely
Transiting the Suez Canal is now a rarely followed path by circumnavigating yachts. The threat of piracy around the Gulf of Aden has long been a concern: British cruisers Paul and Rachel Chandler were famously kidnapped — and held for over a year before their safe release– by Somali pirates in 2009.
Although the danger posed by Somali pirates has lessened considerably since attacks peaked between 2000-2011, more recent attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen on Red Sea cargo ships with apparent links to the US, UK and Israel have once again made the situation high risk, with activity escalating since the end of 2023.
Yacht owners heading to Europe westbound from Asia have two sailing options: to double the Cape of Good Hope, or to pass through the Suez Canal (the alternative is to have their yacht transported). Billion-dollar shipping companies with cargo vessels of hundreds of thousands of deadweight tonnes have opted for the former to avoid the dangers of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait at the entrance to the Red Sea. The equation is different for small yachts.
Reasons to transit the Suez Canal
At the outset of their four or five-year circumnavigation, Greetje Tops, co-owner of the 33ft Dutch-registered Bermudan sloop Black Moon , envisaged she and her partner Niels would return to the Netherlands via Suez.
News of the Houthi attacks reached them in Indonesia. A long route via Cape Town would have meant staying longer in Asia to prepare. But refitting the boat and an additional year of travelling would come with a price. It would be a long time to live on what Tops describes as a small boat.
Did they really have time to go round the Cape – or should they continue with their original planned route? “Basically we followed our gut feeling,” explains Tops. “Everyone was saying you can’t cross at this moment. When we started [cruising] everyone said Covid was too dangerous. Let’s find out for ourselves.”
An estimated 50-60 yachts crossed the Suez Canal in 2023 and 2024, down from a peak of 75 in 2019. Photo: SV Black Moon
The couple opted to make the northbound transit in a small convoy of around four yachts in April this year. Despite unfavourable winds delaying their total passage time to nearly six weeks from Djibouti, after five stopovers in Sudan and six in Egypt, they arrived safely in Europe in mid-May.
The crucial piece of advice they say for planning a Suez transit is to prepare as far in advance as possible. Black Moon made initial contact with an Egyptian canal agent while still in Thailand and communication was kept up for months.
Reasons not to transit the Suez Canal
Conversely, American Saskia Stainer-Hutchins and her husband Ross Rodrigues, currently cruising the Indian Ocean islands with their Lagoon 46 Acushnet , decided not to transit Suez this year. Of all the information sources that informed their decision-making, they found the Red Sea Passage Facebook group the most useful (anyone considering the passage should seek it out, it’s a private group but details of how to contact administrator Wade Alarie can be found on Noonsite ).

News of Houthi attacks can easily be followed on social media (though check your sources’ veracity) and Stainer-Hutchins has also been keenly following the security update pages of the Western military websites. Latest regulations are usually to be found on the cruising guide website Noonsite. Stainer-Hutchins also points to Sailing Zatara’s channel on YouTube as a handy video guide to Suez.
“We connected with lots of other sailors considering the passage,” she recalls. “And we talked to three sailors who had done the passage recently.” They also spoke to agents in Djibouti and Saudi Arabia while mulling their decision.
The Suez canal is not a high risk area itself. For westbound cruisers, from the Gulf of Aden towards Djibouti requires transiting a high piracy risk area. The entire coast of Yemen is also to be avoided, and it’s not possible to safely stop in Eritrea.

In Djibouti Black Moon found an agent who could fix port entry in Sudan and Saudi Arabia. Owing to long passage distances in the area it is necessary to fix port of entry paperwork in those two countries well in advance.
The US-led naval coalition protecting merchant shipping in the Red Sea will monitor yachts on passage through the area. Black Moon emailed (via Iridium satellite) the military liaison daily at 0800 UTC, relaying vessel location and number of crew aboard.
In Sudan, still far from Suez, the Black Moon crew said they felt reassured: coalition warplanes and an aircraft carrier – on the border of the high risk area – were visible. From Jeddah it’s another 600 miles to get to the Gulf of Suez. This area is all deemed safe in terms of armed conflict.

Sandstorms are often an issue. In fact the lasting memory of many yacht owners who have passed through the Red Sea is the rust-coloured Saharan sand blown into their sails – and indeed everywhere else. It pays to avoid forecasted sandstorms, although any wind here will carry sand. Black Moon faced northerlies, and steep waves with an interval of only a few seconds.
For the canal itself no extra safety precautions need be taken. Assuming yachts arriving in Suez will have crossed the Indian Ocean, crews will have taken measures against common safety threats there. As soon as Black Moon left the Maldives there were many encounters with fishing boats approaching without hailing.
They carried pepper spray, a flashlight designed to stun would-be attackers, together with a selection of tools which could serve as a weapon if the situation demanded. It goes without saying a functional VHF was necessary for emergency calls, along with an Iridium sat phone with emergency contacts on speed dial.

On the canal
In Suez you’ll need to meet your transit agent. One of the most popular is Captain Heebi, known as ‘the Prince of the Red Sea’ (also his email address). At this point in their passage, Black Moon reported they felt reassured they’d decided to keep in contact with him since Thailand. They’d registered the ship’s papers for the Suez transit online and answered what Greetje describes as a ‘great many’ advance questions.
A second important point they raise is that you don’t need to undergo immigration clearance while passing through Egypt: Black Moon was in transit in the customs sense as well as the nautical sense. Populous, developing countries have large, complex bureaucracies: Egypt is no exception. Rules are deep within books running to hundreds of pages and signs all in Arabic. Cigarettes and cash dollars can be a useful tool of persuasion, although backhanders are not to be condoned and should be approached with extreme caution. “One tiny misstep and you have a big fine,” warns Greetje.
Without clearing immigration, crew of transiting yachts are not permitted to swim, use a tender, or go ashore. Taking shortcuts to dodge the waves in the Gulf of Suez could land you with a big fine because in every port, bay or village, there’s an Egyptian army base.
Black Moon on the approach to Suez. Photo: SV Black Moon
Permitted anchorages will be explained but if you don’t follow the rules and anchor somewhere else, then the army will come out and come to your boat. “They can be quite hostile,” Greetje recalls. “[They] asked for our original boat papers. We gave them copies and pretended they were the originals. They put them in their pockets and went off.” She believes it was a lure to get them to go ashore, whereupon they’d be fined for breaching immigration rules.
The couple contacted Captain Heebi, based in Port Said, from Suez and he supplied guidance for the next steps. When you arrive in Suez, you take a mooring. The agent comes to collect money and finalise paperwork. Then a pilot comes on board via a pilot boat.
Motoring through
Diesel is available in Suez and Ismailia. Most yachts won’t need to fill up along the canal itself, however, owing to its length. In the permitted anchorages local boats can assist with diesel and groceries. Prices for these services are not reported to be extortionate.
The actual canal itself is approximately 80 miles in distance. A sailing yacht can only transit the waterway under engine during daylight hours. With an average production cruiser this is not possible in a single day. The pilot takes over the wheel to motor to the halfway point of Ismailia. Though yacht owners should be aware that not all pilots have experience in handling yachts, Black Moon says their pilot was extremely competent.
The pilot departs at Port Said at the Mediterranean end of the canal. Photo: SV Black Moon
The midpoint city of Ismailia is located after the passage through Great Bitter Lake. Moorings are available for boats who need to wait before continuing on to Port Said (big ships go straight through). There are shallows throughout the length of the canal, not just near the southern entrance where the Ever Given notoriously lodged itself on the bank.
There is a marina in Ismailia, classified as part of the canal territory and available for transiting boaters. Crew of yachts passing through can use the showers and shop. They can also visit other boats. Venturing beyond the marina bounds, however, is classified as entry to Egypt, and attracts hefty fines.
Yachts need permission of customs control to leave Ismailia, and embarkation must be carried out with the pilot aboard. The US$10,000 penalty attached to perceived breaches of this rule gives you an idea of how seriously the Egyptians police this, as well as the general tariff scale of the fines.
Keeping watch during transit. Photo: SV Black Moon
Mediterranean entry
Black Moon waited three nights in Ismailia for a weather window. Their pilot then came to the marina and they embarked on the final section of canal towards Port Said – a ‘less eventful’ passage, according to Greetje. The pilot disembarked at Port Said marina (VHF Ch12) with a little extra money and cigarettes before Black Moon proceeded straight to Crete.
The most common route avoiding entry into Egypt and heading into the Mediterranean is to Cyprus. For Black Moon , the weather was right to head the longer distance to Crete. Owing to weather delays in the Red Sea the couple found themselves arriving – safely – in Europe in a warmer time of year than originally anticipated.

Cal Sailing Club could stay in its long-held berths at Berkeley Marina

A city proposal earlier this year to move the Cal Sailing Club to a new location at the Berkeley Marina led the club’s members to hoist the battle sails. And buoyed by the support of one of Cal Sailing’s able seamen — who also sits on the Berkeley City Council — the club may be on the verge of victory.
For more than half a century, the 1,200-member nonprofit has operated berths at the very end of the J dock, with volunteers giving greenhorns sailing lessons in the Bay aboard the club’s small keelboat fleet.
The position near open water is crucial for instruction, club members say, as it gives new sailors room for error as they learn to depart and dock under sail without relying on a motor — a rare skill considered by the members to be an important hallmark of seamanship.
The city’s proposal, made back in April, was an attempt to ease the Berkeley Marina’s financial challenges by making room for large private vessels on the city’s waitlist. Big boats also need end-of-the-dock space near open water, and slip fees are the largest source of revenue for the Marina, which faces an ongoing structural deficit and more than $100 million in unfunded structural needs .
Due to a decades-old arrangement with the city, Cal Sailing isn’t charged to use its six berths; in exchange, it must provide evidence each year that the value of its “community service” — mostly free boat rides for the public at open houses and events like the Bay Festival — exceeds $18,000 , the fee the city would typically charge private owners for the same spots.
Scott Ferris, head of the city’s parks, recreation and waterfront department, said Cal Sailing provides a “great service to the community” and the goal of the proposal was only to move the club elsewhere in the Marina — not to start charging fees or push it out to sea. He said he just intended to open a discussion.
But Cal Sailing members saw the proposal as an existential threat. If the club’s berths were moved to the middle of a row, they said, it would be nearly impossible to teach apprentice sailors to dock under sail power alone. Instead, they’d need to use motors and would never learn that important skill.
“This would be a fundamental change to our educational program,” club leader Nicholas Waton recalled telling city staff when he first learned of the proposal. He said he thought the plan “came from someone in an office [who] was looking at spreadsheets and wanted to optimize the numbers.”
The club organized a petition to “stop the eviction” and “protect community sailing,” which has received over 3,000 signatures. An open letter defended Cal Sailing’s value to the community and to the Marina Fund.
The club’s diverse membership — more than half are non-white — get to sail the Bay for just $40 per month (lessons included), helping shift the perception of sailing as a sport exclusively for the wealthy and white. In contrast, the neighboring Modern Sailing School charges $1295 for its four-day group basic keelboat sailing course.
Plus, members often matriculate into slip fee-paying boat owners; in 2022, the letter noted, club members who are also “private keelboat owners conservatively generated over $125,000 in slip fees.”
The club has found support from one of their own: Councilmember Terry Taplin, who has posted photos of himself with his Cal Sailing friends on social media and who credits the club for helping him overcome his longtime fear of open water.
Taplin has drafted a resolution that would grant the club use of its spot at the end of the J-dock in perpetuity. It appears the resolution, expected to go before the City Council in mid-October, has enough votes to pass. Councilmember Sophie Hahn told Berkeleyside through a staffer that she supports the resolution, and Taplin’s chief of staff said it has the support of three other councilmembers: Ben Bartlett, Mark Humbert and Igor Tregub.
“The last thing we want to say to the community is, ‘Hey, you are no longer welcome here because you are not paying for these slips that we need and you are not as important as people who will pay for the private slips,’” Taplin said. “That’s not the message I think we should be sending to the community, and I don’t think that’s where our values of the city lie.”
For club members, the conflict mostly came down to how much they value their spot at the end of J dock, where new sailors can be taught how to depart and dock under sail under any wind conditions.
It makes for safer sailors, argued doctoral candidate Maureen Johnson León, who joined the club in 2021 without sailing experience and now runs a training program for women sailors. She compared relying on a motor to dock to going on a long hike while only following phone GPS instructions, without grasping basic principles of safely navigating the outdoors.
When other sailors’ motors fail — they often do — those taught by Cal Sailing are able to help bail them out because of their knowledge, according to Waton.
“I feel much more comfortable on the boats where I know they’ve come up through Cal Sailing than other boats because I know they’ve had that higher quality of instruction,” said Johnson León. “They understand how marinas work, understand how winds work, understand the position of the boat relative to everybody else.”

Sailing yachts like Mike Lynch's are 'unsinkable bodies', CEO of boat manufacturing firm says
Bayesian superyacht which sank off Italy is an "unsinkable" vessel, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.
Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.
Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.
The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".
"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.
"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."
He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".
"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.
It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.
On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.
Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.
It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.
Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.
