40 Best Sailboats

  • By Cruising World Editors
  • Updated: May 24, 2024

the 40 best sailboats

Sailors are certainly passionate about their boats, and if you doubt that bold statement, try posting an article dubbed “ 40 Best Sailboats ” and see what happens.

Barely had the list gone live, when one reader responded, “Where do I begin? So many glaring omissions!” Like scores of others, he listed a number of sailboats and brands that we were too stupid to think of, but unlike some, he did sign off on a somewhat upbeat note: “If it weren’t for the presence of the Bermuda 40 in Cruising World’s list, I wouldn’t even have bothered to vote.”

By vote, he means that he, like hundreds of other readers, took the time to click through to an accompanying page where we asked you to help us reshuffle our alphabetical listing of noteworthy production sailboats so that we could rank them instead by popularity. So we ask you to keep in mind that this list of the best sailboats was created by our readers.

The quest to building this list all began with such a simple question, one that’s probably been posed at one time or another in any bar where sailors meet to raise a glass or two: If you had to pick, what’re the best sailboats ever built?

In no time, a dozen or more from a variety of sailboat manufacturers were on the table and the debate was on. And so, having fun with it, we decided to put the same question to a handful of CW ‘s friends: writers and sailors and designers and builders whose opinions we value. Their favorites poured in and soon an inkling of a list began to take shape. To corral things a bit and avoid going all the way back to Joshua Slocum and his venerable Spray —Hell, to Noah and his infamous Ark —we decided to focus our concentration on production monohull sailboats, which literally opened up the sport to anyone who wanted to get out on the water. And since CW is on the verge or turning 40, we decided that would be a nice round number at which to draw the line and usher in our coming ruby anniversary.

If you enjoy scrolling through this list, which includes all types of sailboats, then perhaps you would also be interested in browsing our list of the Best Cruising Sailboats . Check it out and, of course, feel free to add your favorite boat, too. Here at Cruising World , we like nothing better than talking about boats, and it turns out, so do you.

ABOUT CLASSIC BOATS

The term classic boat can be seen as subjective but allows us to enjoy and explore a rich and historic look back at some of the most beautiful craft ever built over hundreds of years. Some classic power boats and classic sailing yachts of which have great racing records whilst others represent design milestones in the development of sailing yachts, traditional river boats , commercial vessels or contemporary classics such as the historic Dunkirk Little Ship .

Usually, the build date is before 1970, however, now many modern boats are crafted in a classic build theme following traditional build criteria and the term modern classic is now commonplace when looking at this type of boat.

As the classic boat area is a very niche marketplace we recommend you talk to a specialist in this field when deciding on your purchase, they will advise you on the best boat to suit your needs, offer advice for ongoing maintenance and storage and explore your options with your best interest at heart.

These search results are based on a keyword and category search, so if you are looking for a real classic, a boat pre-1970, please filter your search by using the 'other' filter and applying a year for the best results.

Happy searching! You may find antique boats, wooden ships, classic river boats, classic sailing yachts, and wooden boats for sale. Iconic brands such as Riva's classic power boats may also be seen here.

Sailing Simplicity at its Finest

Long time single handed sailors love the M36 because within 5 minutes they can be off the dock and sailing. Beginners are equally as enthralled because the M36 is simple to sail, simple to learn on and immediately rewarding with her straightforward sail handling and control lines that are lead under deck to electric winches at the helmsman’s fingertips. In addition, all instruments are intelligently arrayed to quickly provide all the information you need.

classic looking sailboats

More Than a Daysailer

Take her overnight! The elegantly appointed optional V-berth, standard fridge and enclosed head make her far more versatile than a mere daysailer. The M36 also has a deep, safe and comfortable cockpit which accommodates six adults allowing you to safely entertain your guests.

classic looking sailboats

Beautifully Appointed Interior

No detail inside her cabin is overlooked. Large safety glass windows and a huge foredeck hatch flood the interior with natural light. The Herreshoff style interior is finished elegantly with white bulkheads, solid cherry trim and marvelously varnished hull sheathing. Twin port and starboard settees are ergonomically designed for comfortable lounging (or sleeping), and well placed reading lights invite you to enjoy the morning paper or catch up on some afternoon reading. Generous storage can be found in the forepeak. An alternative layout converts the forepeak space into a beautiful and functional V-Berth for overnight stays.

Remarkably Simple to Dock

The M36 does exactly what you tell her to do. She backs straight (no prop walk), turns on a dime and docks like a pro. In short, she maneuvers under power as responsively as she does under sail making her a pleasure to both sail and to bring back to port. Even the fenders are just a ‘clip’ away; pad eyes and stainless steel rub rails are placed on deck for ‘clip-on’ polar-fleece-covered fenders. What could be easier!

Perfectly Engineered

At Morris Yachts we’re not just boat builders; we’re sailors and boat owners too. Perhaps this is the reason the M36 is so intuitively designed with the owner in mind. Often overlooked by other builders, access to the engine, through-hulls and electrical systems is superb.

classic looking sailboats

As with all sailing boats built by Morris Yachts, the M36 offers peace of mind. You are onboard one of the most seaworthy boats in the world. Setting the industry standard, Morris Yachts’ level of engineering, fit and finish sets the benchmark by which other builders measure themselves. Morris craftsmen and engineers demand only the finest equipment and use the most modern techniques and technology during the boat building process, proving that the beauty of a Morris is not only skin deep but integrated throughout all facets of the vessel.

Classic Saleroom: Dave Selby’s Finds at Auction

Saleroom ferrari

Take a look at Dave Selby’s top classic picks from auction…

Here’s the latest classic pieces seen at auction from Sothebey’s, Eldred’s (USA) and Bonhams.

RM Sothebey’s

Ferrari flyer still on the pace.

Ferrari

In October 1953 Arno XI catapulted across Italy’s Lake Iseo to shatter the 800kg world water speed record and raise the bar to an incredible 150.19mph (241.7kph) – propelled by a 4.5-litre Ferrari V12 grand-prix engine that had been hopped up with twin superchargers and tuned way beyond 385hp race-spec to produce 600hp. That 1953 class record still stands. In 2012 the restored wood-framed, ply and mahogany-skinned hydroplane sold for $1.1 million. More recently it’s been rumoured to be on the market for $15m.

Arno XI, still with its original engine, is a one-off in the rarefied world of exotic Ferraris. So too is this remarkable large-scale model. Hand-crafted in exquisite detail to 1:3 scale, and leather upholstered, the model measures 2m in length (79in) and sold for €20,400.

As for the full-size craft, engineers at Ferrari managed to extract 700hp when restoring its engine. Should anyone dare, it’s quite possible Arno XI could today beat its own record.

On Auction at Eldred’s, USA

Whalers’ labours of love.

Moby Dick author Herman Melville reckoned a whaling expedition could be counted a success if a crew of 40 took 40 whales on a typical four-year voyage, with a month or more often passing between whale sightings and the frenzied bloody chase that ensued. In idle periods sailors whittled the discard into intricate folk art that is today highly prized.

scrimshaw sheep pull-toy

A sperm whale tooth, carved in the 1830s by the maestro of scrimshaw art, Edward Burdett, recently set a world record auction price of $475,000. But it’s the tenderness and care with which sailors crafted a myriad of domestic objects that speak most poignantly of their longing for their loved ones left languishing at home, not knowing if or when they would return.

Sperm Whale Tooth

Surviving whalers returned with whale-bone love tokens ranging from clothes pegs, rolling pins and corset stays to cribbage boards, children’s toys and walking sticks, but the most intricate object of devotion was the swift, a folding yarn winder of more than 100 articulated parts. Records of the time indicate that sailors would typically take two to three years to complete the complex umbrella-like contraption, with the number of unfinished swifts found in sea chests bearing silent witness to the effort and skill involved.

Saleroom auction

Whale bone had little commercial value, but the folk art crafted from it has considerable worth today. While simpler swifts can be acquired for a few hundred dollars, this exceptionally complex example made $40,625; unusually elaborate pie crimper made $10,080; scrimshaw sheep pull-toy made $8,190

Dave Selby’s finds at Bonhams

Horror shocker/a plastic classic.

While Classic Boat readers of more delicate disposition will be horrified so see an image of a plastic motor boat in these pages, this poster for a B movie shocker triggered in me an altogether more terrifying childhood flashback of one of our more successful family charter holidays on the Norfolk Broads. The 1977 Peter Cushing movie sank without trace, and now the poster has also plumbed new depths. The most prized film posters can sell for hundreds of thousands, yet this piece of whimsy sold for just $12.80 – including frame! That’s shockingly cheap, both for a picture frame, and a poster for a film regarded as a cult classic. That must have left the vendor with a sinking feeling. On the other hand, the buyer of this auction bargain artwork, which deserves pride of place in any downstairs loo, will flush with joy.

When choosing a sailboat, the brand can make a big difference in quality, performance, and resale value. But picking the “best sailboat brand” means swimming through a lot of different kinds of boats with different intended purposes. Are you looking for a large luxury offshore cruising boat or small production daysailer? Do you want a monohull or a catamaran? Are you looking to buoy racer or weekend cruiser?

Although we can’t address all brands and all their uses, we can segment out monohulls from catamarans and address production boats versus luxury brands. Here are some you’ll see on the water and find in peer-to-peer sharing services like Boatsetter.

1. Beneteau

Benetau monohulls

2. Jeanneau

Jeanneau boats

Also under the Beneteau Group umbrella, Jeanneau is renowned for its stylish, performance-oriented sailboats. They offer a broad range of boats that appeal to both casual sailors and competitive racers with models ranging 30-65 feet. Both Beneteau and Jeanneu now build sailboats as well as powerboats.

dufour boats

Another French builder is Dufour that produces versatile, stylish sailboats with a good balance between performance and comfort. This brand is popular among cruising families and casual sailing racers. Dufour was founded in 1964, so they too have a long history on the water and offer reliable models 37-61 feet.

4. Catalina

An American builder, Catalina Yachts offers models 12-44 feet. These coastal cruisers used to be built on the West Coast so you can spot a lot of older versions on the Pacific Ocean. Catalina is focused on easy-maintain and easy-to-handle boats that are family weekending favorites. Dealerships are harder to find these days but today, Catalina will build you a boat in Florida if you inquire.

Oyster is a British luxury builder of serious offshore bluewater cruising yachts and has an excellent reputation with those who want to globetrot in style and make long safe passages. The brand is synonymous with quality and attention to detail. They specialize in building larger passagemakers 49-88 feet and are an exceptional choice for distance cruising if you have a serious budget.

A volume production builder from Germany, Bavaria is known for durable cruisers that are good both with charter fleets and in private ownership. Today, Bavaria offers heavy-duty sailing monohulls 37-57 feet although they also build powerboats.

Another German production builder is Hanse known for sleek modern designs with innovative systems and performance hulls. Hanse has easy-to-handle rigs with self-tacking jibs which makes short-handed sailing a breeze. Hanse has a sister company named Moody which builds comfortable cruising models based on many of the same Hanse hulls.

8. Hallberg-Rassy

A legacy brand, Hallber-Rassy is known for their quality and traditional designs capable of offshore work. This durable Swedish brand has a robust construction and commands a higher price. They’re better known in Europe than in the US and they don’t build in the same kind of volume as many of the production brands so they’re harder to spot.

9. Nautor Swan

A name that has been synonymous with high performance and luxury is Finland’s Nautor Swan. They’re a pedigreed brand with elegant design and renown craftsmanship. Swan was purchased by Italian luxury builder San Lorenzo in the summer of 2024. Their models range 48-65 feet and they have a maxi division that builds superyachts 80-128 feet.

Multihulls:

A segment of cruising sailboats are multihulls, specifically catamarans. Here are popular production cat builders and three extra brands that will make you look twice.

Perhaps the best-known production catamaran brand is Lagoon which is part of the Beneteau umbrella and has been building models since 1987. These models do heavy work in charter around the world so if you see a cat on the water, it’s a good bet that it’s a Lagoon. Offered in lengths 40-78 feet, Lagoon is a volume builder that develops both sail and power multihulls.

Nautitech Open

Nautitech is a French company that was briefly owned by German Bavaria. Now they’re on their own again and espouse Marc Lombard design. They’re known for unique interior layouts that maximize outdoor social spaces. These stylish cats of 40-48 feet have sleek profiles with angular windows, a lowcoachroof and powerful hull sections. Able to sail 10 knots in 15-20 knots of true wind, these bluewater cats are happy to go around the harbor or around the world.

Fountaine Pajot

The French seem to own the world of sailing cats since another powerhouse production brand is Fountaine Pajot which is also a sister brand with monohull builder Dufour mentioned above. The new designs are built for large groups on charter or for families. Cabin arrangements are flexible from an owner’s version with a sumptuous suite all the way to a five-cabin layout that will accommodate 10 guests with ease.

Balance is a premium builder of bluewater performance multihulls designed to carry a good turn of speed on all points of sail which is assisted by foiled daggerboards that make easy work of upwind sailing. Self-tacking rigs and the versatile VersaHelm make driving these serious models a snap. Balance currently builds three models 44-52 feet with three larger models on the drawing board.

When a budget can stretch, sailors reach for upmarket build-to-order ubercats like HH Catamarans produced in China. These boats carry daggerboards and carbon rigs and are great for serious racing as well as distance cruising. These models have a carbon construction to be strong and lightweight and few multihulls will raise an eyebrow quite like an HH sailing by in a flash. Luxury designs are available in 44-88 feet.

NEEL Trimarans

When two hulls aren’t enough, consider a trimaran. Tris are typically faster than cats but have unique and sometimes challenging onboard layouts. When small and designed for racing, tris like the Dragonfly brand are fast and fun. In contrast, French company NEEL builds large cruising tris that reels off the miles and provide lots of space for cruising necessities. NEEL’s current portfolio includes models 43-52 feet with a flagship coming at 65 feet.

Each of these sailing brands has its strengths, whether you’re looking for a comfortable cruiser, a performance-oriented racer, or a luxury bluewater multihull. The best choice depends on your needs, sailing style, and budget.

If you already own one of these fabulous sailboat brands and want to offset the purchase price and ongoing costs, consider chartering via a peer-to-peer services like Boatsetter that can make ownership much more manageable.

Night Fishing Guide: Essential Tips & Tricks

90s classic Little Big Adventure's lovely looking remake is out in November

And there's a limited-time demo on Steam.

It's been a while since we heard anything substantial from Little Big Adventure: Twinsen's Quest, the remake of long-defunct developer Adeline Software's much-loved 1994 action-adventure. But it's now returned in a flurry of news, bringing with it a new trailer, a limited-time Steam demo, and a 14th November release date on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC.

Little Big Adventure (for those of you too young/previously indisposed to remember) tells the story of Twinsen - a model citizen turned fugitive overnight - as he attempts to escape evil dictator Dr. FunFrock. It offers a compelling mix of platforming, puzzling, and exploration that, 30 years later, has had a thorough makeover in Little Big Adventure: Twinsen's Quest.

Twinsen's Quest developer 2.21, which was founded by Little Big Adventure co-creator Didier Chanfray, announced a bunch of ambitious plans for the series back in 2021, including updated remasters , a remake, and even a (seemingly stalled) new entry. To date, the studio has released remasters of Little Big Adventure 1 & 2, and its remake is now due before the end of the year.

Alongside a gently refreshed (and rather lovely) visual style, Little Big Adventure: Twinsen's Quest features an open world of reimagined islands, an enhanced version of Twinsen's Magic Ball weapon, redesigned controls, and a new soundtrack by original composer Philippe Vachey. There's a little more insight into its creation in the making-of video published alongside its release date news. And if that's still not enough Little Big Adventure for you, a limited-time Twinsen's Quest demo featuring the remake's first chapter is now available on Steam . You'll need to be quick, however - it's only sticking around until 2nd October.

Little Big Adventure: Twinsen's Quest launches digitally for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC (via Steam , GOG, and Epic ) on 14th November. A limited edition physical release for PS5 and Switch arrives on 5th December.
