Our Promise

By putting your trust in Quay Crew, you can trust us to:

  • Be honest and transparent – if you’re not suited to the role or the culture of the yacht, we’ll tell you; and if the yacht isn’t offering a competitive salary or package, we’ll consult with them too.

  • Never send your CV on-spec – we’ll always speak 1-2-1 with a candidate before putting them forward for a role and follow up with verbal references from past yachts and employers.

Testimonials.

“I think the reason that Quay Crew is (in my opinion and most of my colleagues’ opinions too) the industry’s leading agent is down to the culture of integrity, honesty and real care that permeates your company, and the careful selection of a candidate that will stay in the job. Long may it continue. I will never hesitate to use, recommend or assist Quay Crew for as long as I’m in yachting, and after.”

Chief Officer – 70m Yacht

“Having moved into the yachting industry from the commercial sector, Sam gave me valuable feedback on my CV and routes into the industry. I can highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for their next engineering position as she does her best to make sure that the yacht is right for you.”

2nd Engineer – 52m Yacht

“Having been in contact with Caroline since the summer, I felt the whole way through my search application process that she was completely on my side and has supported me and given me the confidence to propel my career to the next level.”

Chief Stew – 60m Yacht

“I would just like to take this opportunity to express how amazing Max has been in finding myself and my partner a position on a brand-new build. Max has been such a rock star in not just finding me one job but two jobs, which I am absolutely grateful for. It’s really nice to have a crew agency like Quay Crew who are reliable, trustworthy as well as always wanting to consider your best interests. The team at Quay Crew are absolutely exceptional and I will always recommend only the best for them. ”

Captain – 30m+ Yacht

“The best crew agent I have ever dealt with…always on the ball, super efficient, attentive and always available. There are so many agencies that only care about the yachts because they are the ones paying and completely ignore the crew so I want to thank you for all your help. ”

Head of Service – 100m Yacht

“I really appreciate the communication and commitment from Quay Crew and would like to mention that Tom has been incredible throughout the process. He had a vast amount of information relating to the role and yacht and knew exactly what would suit me. I highly recommend Quay Crew.”

Bosun – 60m+ Yacht

“Quay Crew was the most professional of the agencies I was using in my search. I had constant communication throughout and the whole process was personal. I’m very happy with the placement and would recommend Glen and the team to anyone. ”

2nd Officer – 65m Yacht

“What sets the team apart more than anyone else is the open and honest dialogue as well as the feeling that we’re working towards the same goal. Rather than just being another number or CV on someone’s desk, I established an amazing rapport with Glen so that he was able to really know what my goals were and where I wanted to take my career…and he was absolutely instrumental in seeing that I achieved that by placing me on my current vessel. At some point in the future, I plan to be on the opposite side of the interview process and Quay Crew will be the first agency that I reach out to.”

2nd Officer – 80m Yacht

“I wanted to say how fantastic Tom has been in finding a job for me. From first talking to him on the phone, he gave some fantastic advice about the industry and made the whole process feel calm and easy. His communication was absolutely exemplary and he went above and beyond to secure me a job. I would highly recommend Quay Crew to anyone.”

Deckhand – 90m Yacht

“I recently completed a 4 week trip through Quay crew on a yacht that Phil placed me on. I had applied for the role through other agencies but they refused [to put me forward] and Phil was the only recruiter that I spoke to who also saw flexibility in the job requirements. It’s a pleasure dealing with a recruiter that actually understands the role and the candidates suited for it. I hope to work with Phil and the Quay crew team again in the future.”

Business Insider

I took a $13,000 pay cut to work as a deckhand on a superyacht. I don't regret it as it gave me a career I can grow in.

  • Nathan Marx was a quality controller in South Africa but decided to switch to becoming a superyacht deckhand.
  • Marx said the job has more growth potential than his previous job and helped him develop more meaningful relationships.
  • Working around the wealthy has shown Marx that success is attainable and wealth doesn't change people's core natures.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Nathan Marx, a deckhand for a superyacht. It has been edited for length and clarity.

From 2020 to the end of 2023, I was a quality controller at an engineering company that made mining machinery in South Africa, I managed 132 employees and earned 3,000 euros, around $3,333 a month.

My future was pretty secure at the company, but I lacked that sense of adventure and felt like there was more to life than working away every day and not seeing the world as I would like.

I knew some friends who had entered the yachting industry since leaving school, and it looked very intriguing and adventurous.

My previous job had long hours and was hard work, which made me comfortable stepping into the yachting industry.

When I started working on deckhand certification courses in January this year, I was told about these massive yachting hubs where it'd be easier to find work opportunities because they were saturated with boats.

One of those was Antibes, France. I moved there in May this year and traveled the entire coastline of the south of France, dock walking daily, exploring the vessels, and putting myself out there to catch the right opportunity.

I started documenting my job search on TikTok on the day I left for France. I was very nervous that I didn't have a job yet, and I wanted to stand out and get a step ahead in my job search. I love expressing myself through video creation, so the two went hand in hand.

I met this girl who works on this vessel docked in Monaco for the season. She saw my videos, and we got to know each other. I was the first person she contacted when they needed a deckhand. So it's all about getting in front of the right people's eyes.

My role on the yacht is to ensure the boat's exterior is pristine. Everything regarding the exterior, from the hull to the deck, to any furniture outside, is my responsibility to ensure that it is presentable for guests. I also help with basic watchkeeping when the yacht is out at sea.

Now, three months in, I'm at the bottom of the food chain and I'm earning 1,000 euros less every month than I did back in South Africa. But this career has room for growth and will keep me above the ceiling that I reached in South Africa in my management job.

One thing I realized working on yachts is that you live in the same space as your coworkers. If something bothers you about a person and you keep quiet, it builds within you and just sours the relationship on board. You have to foster a relationship with them that is a lot more fruitful than a normal employee would.

I think I also value that because not only am I getting to travel or experience all these crazy things that normal people in a 9-to-5 usually won't, but I'm also meeting people and creating connections with them that'll last a lifetime instead. That real connection with people also gives me satisfaction.

Having a life outside this industry might be challenging because anything can happen at the last minute. You might have time to spare one moment, but you're expecting guests the next, and you're suddenly back to work for a week. So whatever you have planned just needs to fall on the back burner.

But the maritime industry here sets out work-life balance very well, and I think that's also one of the things that drew me to the yachting industry because my previous job did not value my personal life. So, after the hard work, I get a lot of off time, and I have time to go and experience things and step off.

One of my favorite places I visited was a beautiful little town on a hill with an absurd history called Bonifacio, on the island of Corsica, France. We also had the privilege of hiking up into the old city, an amazing experience I don't think I would've had otherwise if I wasn't into the yachting industry.

I once spoke to a person who's been in the industry for around nine years. He told me about chartering Will Smith and all these big A-list star names, which sounded so enticing. I haven't had any of those or any experiences like that, but the individuals we meet on this boat are very high-net-worth because renting the vessel I work on costs about 78,000 euros a week.

We once had a client with 3.2 million Instagram followers on board and had a normal conversation with her. It was humbling to me because you always think these people will be different or special in some way, but at the end of the day, they're just normal people. She never mentioned anything about her success once. It was so normal that I was surprised.

It's very motivating to be surrounded by individuals like that because they make you feel that their success is possible for you, too.

The superyacht industry is unlike other luxury sectors. The places people visit are so unique that not everyone gets to see them. The cost involved is also quite exorbitant, with some yachts going for 500,000 euros a week. So, the client has a level of expectation of luxury they want to receive, and you have to live up to very high standards that no other luxury industry has.

My career can progress from here in many ways, and I'm trying to explore all those avenues. But the yachting industry is a tight-knit community that's made me very happy over the past few months, so I'll stay for as long as possible.

Thomas Legner ist General Manager auf The World.

Also muss alles, was man geplant hat, zurückgestellt werden.

Things to do

Restaurants, food and drink, restaurants, food and drink | from superyachts to campsites, ‘adventure chef’ has cooked through it all. here are his tips for adapting., reality tv figure draws a creativity-first cooking philosophy from his freewheeling career.

jobs on superyachts

When he got an email from the school encouraging him to apply for the chef’s position on a 120-foot Christensen yacht sailing out of Alaska, his only real experience was two apprenticeships in San Diego, at Mr. A’s and the University Club, and a brief stint in his first restaurant job peeling 50-pound bags of potatoes at La Valencia — which he didn’t enjoy.

“The crazy part was that I was underqualified, way underqualified, with zero experience on boats. I think I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, not only on a seafarers’ level but also on a culinary level,” Glick, 39, explained in a phone interview.

Chef Adam Glick, author of the cookbook

If you’re a fan of reality television or culinary competition shows, Glick’s name may be familiar. For three seasons between 2017 and 2020, he served as chef on the crew of Bravo’s “Below Deck Mediterranean” and “Below Deck Sailing Yacht.” Afterward, he hosted his own outdoor-focused show, “Stoked with Adam Glick,” and, in 2013, he competed on “Cutthroat Kitchen” on the Food Network.

Yet he’s proudest of those 10 years and over 115,000 nautical miles he traveled as a working chef on a wide array of superyachts, overcoming the difficulties of working in confined galley quarters, constantly producing fine dining-level cuisine for demanding passengers while rocking and rolling in often heavy seas. The experience challenged both his creativity and his endurance while providing the solid base that’s enabled him to reinvent himself successfully whenever wanting to refresh his life and career.

While at sea, he acquired the everyday skills, the flexibility and adaptability, plus the understanding to substitute whatever he had on hand for traditional kitchen equipment and recipe ingredients. On board, Glick could produce a pizza at 2 a.m. or whip out a devil’s food cake on a passenger’s whim. He gained the knowledge and developed common-sense shortcuts that he never learned in culinary school.

jobs on superyachts

Now in “Live Free, Eat Well,” he’s sharing that simplified approach toward cooking, along with lessons, techniques and tips he learned along with recipes that evolved into his personal, highly practical style of cooking. These are valuable tools for any home cook, especially anyone setting up a first kitchen, radically downsizing their kitchen or learning to cook in a small space such as a boat or RV galley, tiny home or over a campfire. His book is illustrated with his own beautiful photographs of both his dishes and sites he’s explored as the “Adventure Chef,” as he’s branded himself.

Unlike most chefs who’ve just published their first cookbook, he explained that he wants cooks to use his recipes as jumping off points for their own creativity and experimentation, using what they have on hand as substitutes for a recipe’s ingredients.

In his book’s introduction he explains that “the goal … is to use minimal ingredients and equipment and lots of intuition any time you’re making a new dish. Written recipes are meant to serve as a guide, in my opinion. Work with what you have, don’t be afraid to bend the rules a bit, and try to create your own unique version of the dish every time.”

Creativity, he explained, is the essence of a fulfilled life.

Chef Adam Glick, author of the cookbook

“A lack of creativity is the only thing keeping you from turning water into wine. It doesn’t apply only to your food, but also to your life. Be more creative, more open-minded. A huge part of what creativity is is the ability to let go of the strict rules that have been placed on you from the day you were born,” he added.

The vagabond lifestyle of a yacht chef, bouncing from short, weeklong assignments to longer gigs of several months, suited him well. Glick grew up in a family of passionate travelers, as his father’s work with a multinational corporation took the family from continent to continent, while his teacher mother instilled an instinct to share his knowledge with others. His turning point, setting his path toward a seminomadic existence, was his family’s transfer to Kuwait, where he attended high school. When riots broke out in the city following the 9/11 attacks, they were evacuated to their California hometown of Carmel.

“A wire snapped,” he explained, with the move to Kuwait, leaving him unable to settle in one place. He attended college in Northern California, pursuing his creative interests by studying graphic arts, but he hated classes and preferred working with his hands, remaining on the move. His older sister encouraged him to go to culinary school since he loved to cook, steering him toward a career he loves.

The pandemic led him to find a home in a southern Oregon cabin, now his home base, as he travels after reinventing himself following the reality shows. Now his cooking focuses on demos to promote products for clients including Messermeister Knives, for whom he helped design a special line of “Adventure Chef” knives geared to outdoor cooks.

What’s next for Glick?  More adventure: He’s contemplating buying a liveaboard catamaran, for sailing the West Coast and beyond.

Watermelon Gazpacho from

Watermelon Gazpacho

These gazpachos ingredients are easily cross-utilized and can be used in other dishes before or after making this recipe. The other half of a watermelon used for a lunch salad with cucumber and feta can be used later for this quick-and-easy gazpacho. You’ll utilize all your ingredients with nothing going to waste. Gazpacho is a dish most people don’t fully understand, but once you try it, this recipe will become a staple among your summer favorites. It’s light and refreshing on a hot afternoon.

Makes 5 servings

INGREDIENTS

1/2 small seedless watermelon, rind removed, cubed (1 cup [152 g] reserved)

2 Roma tomatoes, roughly chopped

1 jalapeño, roughly chopped

1 red onion (1/2 roughly chopped, 1/2 diced)

1 cucumber, peeled (1/2 roughly chopped, 1/2 diced)

1/2 cup mint, minced (reserve 3 to 4 leaves for garnish)

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

Pinch of salt and pepper

1/2 cup (80 g) feta, crumbled

Basil leaves, to garnish

1: Fill a blender with the watermelon cubes, reserving a cup of cubes to use later as toppings. Puree until smooth.

2: Add the tomatoes, jalapeño, half the onion (chopped), half the cucumber (chopped) and mint to the blender along with the olive oil, red wine vinegar, and salt and pepper. Blend thoroughly until well combined and no lumps remain. Taste, adding more salt and pepper to your liking. Refrigerate the mixture.

3: While the gazpacho is cooling, prepare your toppings in a medium bowl by combining the remaining watermelon cubes, red onion and cucumber. Toss to make a salad.

4: Once the gazpacho is thoroughly cooled (at least 1 hour), pour it into bowls and top with the salad, feta and basil.

Maple-Glazed Carrots

This simple dish brings out the best flavors and qualities of the humble carrot without overpowering or drawing attention away from it. I find that simple dishes are often the most crowd-pleasing. Applying a less-is-more ethos allows the flavors of a few ingredients to truly shine. The simplest approach is often the tastiest.

Makes 3 servings

1 tablespoon butter

5 to 6 medium carrots, peeled and sliced lengthwise

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1/2 cup (75 g) whole roasted almonds

1 tablespoon maple syrup

2 sprigs chopped rosemary, plus 1 sprig to garnish

1: Begin by preparing your heat source. You’ll need a fire, a grill or a stovetop burner set at medium heat. Warm a medium-sized cast-iron skillet or other appropriate roasting pan over your heat source. Add butter and let it melt to coat the skillet.

2: Add the carrots to the pan with the flat sides facing down. Season the carrots with salt and pepper and sprinkle on the brown sugar, coating evenly. Cover the skillet with a lid or tin foil and let cook for 5 minutes, allowing the carrots to steam until fork-tender.

3: Remove the lid, increase to medium-high heat and fully caramelize the carrots, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the almonds and drizzle on the maple syrup.

4: Remove from the heat. Garnish with the rosemary, serve and enjoy!

Steelhead With Blackberries, a recipe from Chef Adam Glick, author of the cookbook

Steelhead With Blackberries

In recent years, I’ve found myself spending most of my time at home in the Pacific Northwest. My little cabin sits close to world-class steelhead fishing and rivers lined with plentiful blackberries ripe for the taking. It didn’t take long for the chef in me to realize these two ingredients made for the perfect local recipe. All I needed was my fishing rod, a skillet, butter, some garlic and a lemon. I recommend you fish in the morning and get yourself a fresh catch. Spend the early afternoon foraging for a hatful of fresh blackberries, and come evening, light up a fire and enjoy the accomplished feeling of making this dish from ingredients you harvested yourself. (Note: you can substitute salmon for steelhead trout.)

Makes 2 servings

3 tablespoons butter, divided

1 steelhead trout, portioned into 2 or 3 fillets

1 tablespoon salt, divided

2 teaspoons pepper, divided

1 shallot, diced

2 garlic cloves, minced

25 to 30 fresh blackberries

1/3 cup (66 g) granulated sugar

1 lemon, halved

Fresh dill, to garnish (optional)

1: Begin by preparing your heat source. You’ll need a fire or a stovetop burner set at medium-high heat. Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a medium-sized cast-iron skillet on medium-high heat. Season the steelhead with 1/2 tablespoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Place the fillets flesh side down in the pan. Sear for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown, fully caramelizing this side of the trout.

2: Once fully caramelized, flip the fillet and continue cooking another 2 minutes, or until just cooked through. The fish is fully cooked when it’s fully opaque with no transparent parts. If unsure, try to separate the thickest part of the fish and peek to make sure none is raw. Remove fish and transfer to a platter.

3: Add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Let it melt. Add the shallot and garlic and cook for about 5 minutes. Add the blackberries, 1/4 cup water, sugar, 1/2 tablespoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper to the skillet. Simmer on medium heat for 5 minutes.

4: While the blackberry sauce is simmering, grill the lemon halves on high heat until nicely charred. The blackberries should have popped and created a beautiful sauce. If you need to help them pop, use the back of a fork to break them up and thicken your sauce.

5: Spoon the finished blackberry sauce over top of the fish fillets. Garnish with fresh dill and the charred lemon halves.

A former captain of the Bayesian has described the terrifying obstacles facing those trapped in the cabins as the Bayesian superyacht overturned killing seven.

Stephen Edwards, who captained the Bayesian for five years until 2020, told The Telegraph : “Those who stayed curled up in bed were in the worst situation.

“The storm hit hard, placing them in the melee of flying furniture, glass and other items,” he said adding he had spoken to traumatised crew members.

“Inside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.”

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms,” Italian climatologist Luca Mercall said.

“So we can’t say that this is all due to climate change, but we can say that it has an amplifying effect.”

A similar freak storm killed four people, when their tourist boat sank on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy in May last year.

The country’s varied geology makes it prone to floods and landslides, while the fact it is flanked by rapidly warming seas means it is vulnerable to increasingly powerful storms.

Bodies of Mike Lynch and daughter Hannah flown back to families after Bayesian superyacht sinking

The bodies of those who died after the billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht sunk off the coast of Sicily have been flown back to their families by private jet.

Italian publication Giornale di Sicilia reported post-mortem examinations were completed at a Palermo hospital and the bodies have now been returned.

My colleague Tom Watling reports:

Bodies of Mike Lynch and daughter flown back to UK after Bayesian tragedy

Italian media reports the bodies have been returned to their families via private jet

Four victims found with carbon dioxide in lungs

Tech billionaire Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, 18, and five other people died when the Bayesian went down in a downburst, which is similar to a small tornado.

Chef Recaldo Thomas, Jonathan Bloomer, the Morgan Stanley International bank chairman, his wife Judy, and Chris Morvillo, a Clifford Chance lawyer, and his wife Neda, were the other victims of the August 19 tragedy.

Four of the victims are feared to have suffocated to death in air bubbles that filled with carbon dioxide, according to their autopsies raising the frightening possibility that they may have been conscious after the yacht sank, according to Italian news outlet La Republica.

Fifteen people, including Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, survived when they were rescued by a nearby yacht.

Former captain says surviving crewmembers all have PTSD from sinking

The former captain of the Bayesian superyacht says he has spoken to all of the surviving crew to hear their account of the sinking.

Stephen Edwards said all the crew members who were on deck rescued as many passengers as they could but that heading down towards the flooded lower parts of the yacht “would have meant certain death”.

The former captain told The Telegraph: “They are not doing very well”

“The dominant feeling is still one of shock from the event. They are dealing with what happened, how it happened and how quickly it happened.”

Bayesian yacht sinking: Banking boss among four victims who ‘suffocated in cabin air bubble’

Four of the victims of last month’s Bayesian yacht disaster died after oxygen ran out in an air bubble on the sunken vessel, it has been reported.

Autopsies over the past few days on four of those who died have revealed an absence of water in their lungs, suggesting they suffocated as the air became saturated with carbon dioxide, Italian publication La Repubblica said.

The outlet reported post-mortems showed four people died from “atypical drowning”, with “no water in their lungs, trachea and stomach”. There were no signs of external injuries.

HP looking to recoup £4billion from Mike Lynch’s estate despite Bayesian tragedy

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is making the “difficult decision” to pursue Mike Lynch’s estate for £4billion in the interests of shareholders despite the tech billionaire being killed along with his daughter on the Bayesian superyacht.

Antonio Neri, the former engineer turned chief executive at HPE, told the Financial Times : “Obviously my job as a representative of shareholders is to make the difficult decisions.

“These are difficult decisions. But in the end, we are making decisions in the best interest of shareholders.”

Mike Lynch had been celebrating his acquittal from criminal charges on the superyacht when it overturned in a freak storm.

But HPE intends to pursue damages around an earlier UK civil trial in 2022 which found in favor of HPE’s claim that Lynch and ex-CFO Sushovan Hussain had inflated the apparent value of Autonomy during the acquisition.

Seven people lost their lives in the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily

Bayesian captain said to be ‘living darkest days of his life'

Three crew members including the yacht’s captain are under investigation, with plans being discussed to raise the yacht from the ocean bed to assist enquiries.

Sources close to New Zealander James Cutfield, 51, the captain , told the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera that he is living through the darkest days of his life.

Among those killed were Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who had been due to begin studying at Oxford University in September, the yacht’s chef and four other family friends and associates.

Seven key unanswered questions around the sinking of the Bayesian

With the Bayesian lying on her side 50 metres underneath the now gentle waters of the Mediterranean, mystery still surrounds how the 56-metre superyacht, sank in the typhoon off the port of Porticello.

Remotely controlled underwater vehicles and cave divers are looking to raise the yacht .

Will answers to the sinking will rise to the surface with it?

Mike Lynch’s co-defendant died from head injury after being hit by car days before yacht sinking

Mike Lynch ’s co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain died in hospital three days after being hit by a car on a country road, an inquest heard.

The 52-year-old, from Longstanton in south Cambridgeshire, was struck by a blue Vauxhall Corsa travelling between Stretham and Wicken on the A1123 at about 10.10am on 17 August.

Mr Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Mike Lynch’s software firm Autonomy, had been out running at the time, his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said.

Coroner Caroline Jones told the inquest in Alconbury that his medical cause of death was recorded as “traumatic head injury”.

Mike Lynch ‘likely died of suffocation’ after running out of oxygen on sunken yacht

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is likely to have died of suffocation after running out of oxygen, according to a source close to the investigation.

They cited initial examinations carried out on Saturday after the businessman’s body was recovered from the family yacht that sank off Sicily ’s coast last month during a freak weather incident.

Mr Lynch died alongside his 18-year-old daughter, the boat’s chef and four others , who were onboard the British-flagged superyacht Bayesian to celebrate his recent acquittal after a lengthy decade-long legal battle.

Initial results of examinations of Hannah Lynch’s body on Saturday were inconclusive, the source told the Reuters news agency.
