Le Boat Adds “Skipper for Hire”

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • July 31, 2024

Le Boat

Le Boat, which offers bareboats in Europe and Canada, has launched a Skipper for Hire program to make boating easier for first-time cruisers.

“Many of our North American guests have expressed interest in having a skipper available, as the idea of piloting a boat for the first time can be daunting,” Lisa McLean, long haul marketing manager for Le Boat, stated in a press release. “In response to this feedback, our Skipper for Hire program aims to enhance the boating experience and provide unparalleled support to our valued guests. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned cruiser, our skilled skippers are dedicated to helping our customers feel more confident and ensure their journey is stress-free and enjoyable.”

McLean stresses that all of Le Boat’s vessels are easy to drive, and that no boat license or prior boating experience is required. Le Boat’s base teams provide in-depth orientation, safety briefings and hands-on training before bareboaters set off.

Le Boat’s vessels have a steering wheel for left and right turns, and a throttle for forward and reverse motion. Certain boats in the Comfort Plus, Premier and Luxury categories are also fitted with bow and/or stern thrusters.

The Le Boat skipper program will cost $199 per day. On the first full day of the voyage, the skipper will provide guests with hands-on instruction on boat operation, navigation techniques and maneuvering through locks. The idea is to empower guests to navigate independently for the remainder of their excursion.

Skippers will provide their own lunch and refreshments on board, and will leave at the end of the first day. Le Boat assumes liability for any accidental damage incurred while the skipper is on board.

For the initial program launch, skippers will be stationed along the Canal du Midi, departing from Le Boat bases in Castelnaudary, Carcassonne (Trèbes), Homps and Port Cassafières. They will be proficient in English and French.

If the program is successful, Le Boat plans to expand it to other cruising grounds in Europe or Canada after 2025.

Le Boat is offering a 2025 early-booking deal: Cruisers can save as much as 25 percent on Budget, Comfort and Comfort Plus rentals across Europe, or as much as 15 percent on the Horizon Fleet in Canada, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany.

Le Boat’s New Skipper for Hire Program Offered for 2025 Season for Folks Who Appreciate a Bit of Help

Le Boat’s New Skipper for Hire Program Offered for 2025 Season for Folks Who Appreciate a Bit of Help

Le Boat’s New Skipper for Hire Program — What a Great Idea

by Ted Scull

Let’s get underway. A self-drive boat that explores the interlocking waterways of southern France is a most appealing vacation concept. The maps show a network of canals and rivers slicing through the magnificent countryside.

The equivalent for North America has southern Ontario laced with waterways, both natural rivers and canals initially constructed for moving freight and passengers

A Canadian firm – Le Boat (note the French and English!) – provides live-aboard, self-drive boating holidays exploring these scenic waterways. Most of the clientele, even first-time cruisers following Le Boat’s onboard instructors, find the navigation easy. For instance, boats have a steering wheel for left and right turns, and a throttle for forward and reverse motion. Some Le Boat vessels also have bow and/or stern thrusters to make the canal boats easy to maneuver when docking and passing other boats.

However, for some folks, a bit more help and encouragement would be appreciated.

Hence, Le Boat, the leader in private boating vacations in Europe and Canada, announced the launch of its innovative  Skipper for Hire program.

“We are finding that for many of our new customers, captaining a boat themselves is a new experience. All our boats are easy to drive, and no boat license nor prior boating experience is required. The Le Boat’s experienced-base teams provide in-depth orientation, safety briefings, and hands-on training to ensure you’re fully prepared,” says Lisa McLean, a LeBoat spokesperson speaking about  Le Boat’s New Skipper for Hire program.

That said, Mclean continues: “Many of our North American guests have expressed interest in having a skipper available as the idea of piloting a boat for the first time in unfamiliar waters can be daunting. In response to this feedback, our ‘Skipper for Hire’ program aims to enhance the boating experience and provide unparalleled support to our valued guests,” Lisa McLean continues. “Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned cruiser, our skilled skippers are dedicated to helping our customers feel more confident and ensure their journey is stress-free and enjoyable.”

For instance, a Skipper for Hire can assist travelers with navigating curves in the rivers, maneuvering safely past oncoming boats, entering lock chambers, and docking along an embankment, when the day is done perhaps between another boat both fore and aft. Sometimes just a foot or two apart.

A Little Help From a Friend

Speaking of a bit of assistance, this all reminds me of an incident when I was 14. A classmate, (Charlie) asked me if I would like to be “his number two” aboard a 14-foot single-masted catboat, I accepted without giving pause.

The next day we moved into position in Nantucket harbor for the first race of the season.

Moments later the Nantucket steamer rounded Brandt Point and aimed straight for its berth. We happened to be in its path and Charlie pushed the tiller as far as it could go, and a sudden gust of wind caused our boat to capsize and dumped us into the water.

The steamer slid by with scores looking down at our plight.

Happily, the U.S. Coast Guard base was close by, and its tender maneuvered us to shallow water where we dropped anchor and then waded ashore. The first task was to rid the boat of water, and then to agree that we needed a few lessons to handle the numerous situations that might require immediate action.

Now back to today and those who would like to feel comfortable navigating narrow Ontario waterways and French canals with dozens of other vessels.

Interested in Le Boat’s New Skipper for Hire Program?

Available exclusively along the picturesque Canal du Midi in France starting in the 2025 season, Le Boat’s Skipper for Hire program is priced at $199 USD per day for travelers to enlist the expertise of a seasoned Le Boat skipper to accompany them for about seven hours on the first full day of their rental.

The appointed skipper (who speaks both English and French) provides guests with hands-on instruction for all aspects of the boat’s operation and navigation.

The goal is for this personalized guidance to build confidence and empower guests to navigate independently for the remainder of their excursion. (Note, Le Boat assumes liability for any accidental damage incurred while the skipper is on board, which Le Boat says, emphasizes the company’s commitment to guest satisfaction and safety.)

If it proves successful, Le Boat plans to expand the program to other cruising grounds in Europe or Canada in future seasons.

SMITHS FALLS, ON — Le Boat has a brand new program called ‘Skipper for Hire’.

The initiative should appeal to potential Le Boat clients who like the idea of a private boating vacation, but are unsure about piloting their own vessel.

le yacht skipper

“For many of our new customers, captaining a boat themselves is a new experience. All our boats are easy to drive, and no boat license or prior boating experience is required. The Le Boat experienced base teams provide in-depth orientation, safety briefings, and hands-on training to ensure you’re fully prepared,” says Le Boat’s Long Haul Marketing Manager, Lisa McLean.

She added: ”Many of our North American guests have expressed interest in having a skipper available as the idea of piloting a boat for the first time can be daunting. In response to this feedback, our Skipper for Hire program aims to enhance the boating experience and provide unparalleled support to our valued guests.”

“Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned cruiser, our skilled skippers are dedicated to helping our customers feel more confident and ensure their journey is stress-free and enjoyable,” she said.

‘SKIPPER FOR HIRE’ EXPLAINED

Le Boat’s Skipper for Hire will be available exclusively along the Canal du Midi in France starting in the 2025 season, across all boat types.

For US$199 per day, travellers can enlist the expertise of a seasoned Le Boat skipper to accompany them on their maiden voyage.

On the first full day of the voyage, the appointed skipper provides guests with hands-on instruction on boat operation, navigation techniques, and maneuvering through locks.

The idea is that this personalized guidance will instill confidence, empowering guests to navigate independently for the remainder of their excursion.

Le Boat skippers will accompany guests for approximately seven hours on the first full day of their vacation, starting at 9 a.m. local time after a comprehensive pre-departure briefing.

Skippers provide their own lunch and refreshments onboard, and arrangements are made for disembarkation at a suitable location by day’s end.

Le Boat assumes liability for any accidental damage incurred while the skipper is on board, underscoring the company’s commitment to guest satisfaction and safety.

Skippers are stationed along the Canal du Midi, departing from Le Boat bases in Castelnaudary, Carcassonne (Trèbes), Homps, and Port Cassafières. Skippers are also proficient in both English and French.

Le Boat introduces Skipper for Hire Program to enhance boating experience

Le Boat introduces Skipper for Hire Program to enhance boating experience

In a bid to simplify the boating experience for first-time cruisers, Le Boat , renowned for its private boating vacations across  Europe and Canada , has unveiled its innovative Skipper for Hire program.

Lisa McLean , Long Haul Marketing Manager for Le Boat, emphasized the program's aim to assist new customers navigating the waters themselves. "For many of our new customers, captaining a boat themselves is a new experience," McLean stated. "All our boats are easy to drive, and no boat license or prior boating experience is required. The Le Boat experienced base teams provide in-depth orientation, safety briefings, and hands-on training to ensure you're fully prepared."

Le Boat's fleet of boats is designed with comfort and ease of use in mind, equipped with features such as steering wheels for both left and right turns, throttles for forward and reverse motion, and certain models in higher categories fitted with bow and stern thrusters for enhanced maneuverability.

Responding to feedback from North American guests, McLean highlighted the Skipper for Hire program as a direct response to the apprehension some feel about piloting a boat for the first time. "Whether you're a novice or a seasoned cruiser, our skilled skippers are dedicated to helping our customers feel more confident and ensure their journey is stress-free and enjoyable," she affirmed.

The Skipper for Hire service will debut along the picturesque  Canal du Midi in France starting in the 2025 season, priced at just US$199 per day. This new offering aims to enrich the cruising experience by providing guests with the expertise of a seasoned Le Boat skipper. On the first full day of the voyage, the skipper offers hands-on instruction on boat operation, navigation techniques, and maneuvering through locks, empowering guests to navigate independently for the remainder of their excursion.

Skippers will accompany guests for approximately seven hours on the first full day, starting at 9:00 AM local time, following a comprehensive pre-departure briefing. Le Boat ensures liability for any accidental damage incurred while the skipper is on board, underlining the company's commitment to guest satisfaction and safety.

The Skipper for Hire service is exclusively available on 2025 departures across all boat types departing from Le Boat bases in Castelnaudary, Carcassonne (Trèbes), Homps, and Port Cassafières. Skippers proficient in English and French cater to a diverse range of travelers, but due to limited availability, early booking is recommended for the 2025 cruising season. If successful, Le Boat plans to expand the program to other cruising grounds in Europe or Canada in future seasons.

To complement the Skipper for Hire program, Le Boat is offering early booking incentives for the 2025 cruising season. Travelers can save up to 25% on select boat rentals across Europe and Canada with Le Boat's Early Booking offer. Additionally, the company guarantees the lowest price up to 90 days before departure, providing peace of mind to customers who book in advance.

«I portelloni erano chiusi»

BRIGGS CUNNINGHAM: American Racing Tradition TALE OF AN AMERICAN SPORTSMAN

The america's cup, the america’s cup – 1958, text by kane rogers.

Columbia

Prior to 1958, the last defense of the America’s Cup had been in 1937, by the J-Class yacht Ranger , owned by Harold S. “Mike” Vanderbilt. The J-Class rules prescribing a vessel of some 120 feet in length were promoted by Vanderbilt and others for the defense planned for 1958, but economic concerns and the desire among aspiring competitors to employ smaller dual-purpose yachts won the day. The New York Yacht Club settled on the twelve-meter class rules, reducing the length of the average vessel to around sixty-five feet. Harry Sears, then the club’s commodore, formed a syndicate to build the ship and asked Briggs to join to help with finances.

Although building and racing his cars had long been Briggs’ primary field of endeavor, he had never stopped sailing, and he agreed to join the effort. Sailing legend Cornelius Shields was appointed as the team’s skipper but, when he suffered a heart attack, Sears asked Cunningham to take Shields’ place.

As a member of five East Coast yacht clubs, with almost thirty years’ experience racing several different classes of vessel, Briggs was a solid choice to lead. The one thing he lacked was experience with the starting strategy required by the head-to-head style of America’s Cup competition. Shields, a master of this type of racing, was happy to impart his knowledge to Cunningham, who proved an able student.

Unfortunately, as skipper it was Briggs who had to inform Shields that he could not remain a member of the crew; if he suffered an attack during competition and had to be taken to the hospital, it would leave them a man short and result in their disqualification. It was a tough moment for both men, but it was also characteristic of both to do what was best for the team.

The eliminations for the American side would prove to be more exciting than the final races. Four twelve-metre yachts, Easterner , Weatherly , Vim and Columbia , survived two months of run-offs to compete in the final eight-day round of match races to determine the defender of the America’s Cup. Of the four contenders, only the Vim had raced previously, but the nineteen-year-old vessel was so completely refitted as to be virtually brand new. The Easterner and Weatherly had been hurriedly completed and neither was fully prepared to compete, although the Weatherly would successfully defend the Cup in 1962.

Columbia benefited from a strong syndicate whose membership included Harry Sears, Olin Stephens, the designer of the Vim , and Cornelius Shields, Jr., who occasionally spelled Briggs as skipper. The competition finally narrowed to Vim and Columbia , which prevailed by virtue of her ability to better handle rough seas and strong winds.

The British challenger, Sceptre , entered by the Royal Yacht Squadron and skippered by Graham Mann, was a quite rotund 68,000 pounds compared to the svelte Columbia at 57,000 pounds, and the event was decided in four straight wins by the Americans.

During the post-race celebrations, Briggs located a pay phone and called Alfred Momo at Watkins Glen, where Ed Crawford had just won the main race. As Briggs was returning to join his crew, a reporter approached and commented, “Briggs, that was a fine race!” to which Briggs, still with the Glen on his mind, replied, “That’s what I just heard. I wish I could have seen it.”
