Powerboat races bring fun and business to the Beach
By staff | oct 9, 2019.
Offshore racing returning to Fort Myers beach means inshore dollars being spent at local businesses, establishments, restaurants and hotels, providing an economic boost to the region during a typically slow time of year.
This weekend, the American Powerboat Association Roar Offshore event returns to Fort Myers Beach after more than a decade, where the inaugural APBA six-race series champions will be determined at the event that brings nearly 70,000 to the area.
“Everyone on the island is excited to see the return of Offshore Racing. It was a much loved event back in the day and we are all excited to welcome it back,” said Jacki Liszak, president of the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce.
The Offshore Powerboat Association and Powerboat P1 have joined forces to create the APBA World Offshore Championship series, where more than 50 teams from across the globe have tested their might in five cities, culminating this weekend on the Beach.
The races will also serve as the National Championship for the Offshore Powerboat Association.
National championship events draw large crowds, and Fort Myers Beach is the perfect place to hold an offshore racing event.
Race teams and spectators come from across the globe to compete and cheer on their favorite competitors.
“Race teams come from all over the world to compete,” Tim Hill, Roar Offshore president, said. “Both visitors and residents can enjoy a number of pre-race parties, and seize the opportunity to see the powerboats up close.”
Roar fans, while enjoying the action, also enjoy all the Beach has to offer while in the area — a positive for local businesses.
“Fort Myers Beach will benefit from the economic boost that the Roar guests will bring with them,” Liszak said. “During a usually slow time of year, Roar is drawing large crowds to the island which will result in hotel rooms, restaurants and attractions seeing an increase in their business.”
Liszak said additional rooms booked in the area result in bed tex for the county, and other things such as watersports, fishing tours, cruises, etc, all benefit the local economy.
This is usually the time of year after the busier summer months and before the snowbird flock back down — Roar will help employees and businesses create enough revenue until things start to ramp up.
“Events like Roar absolutely generates additional revenue for beach businesses, the city and the county,” Liszak said. “It allows us to get a much needed ‘boost in the arm’ during what is usually our slowest part of the year. It also helps to sustain everyone until our winter residents and guests return from up north.”
An event this size, that has events happening throughout the week and big-time racing on the weekend, traffic getting on and off the beach may be heavier than usual as the week progresses.
On Thursday, the Matanzas Pass Bridge will be closed from 5:45-6:15 as the Roar Offshore Race Boat Parade will see teams and vessels from Salty Sam’s come over the bridge and into the downtown district.
“We’ll line the streets of the entertainment district,” Hill said.
Parade time begins at 5:45 and go down Old San Carlos Boulevard into Times Square and down 2nd and 5th streets.
The boats will be parked along each side of the street and is another opportunity for fans to come out and chat with the teams and their boats.
There will be a street party after the parade downtown from 6-10 p.m. with live entertainment.
Saturday is the main event, where all 13 classes of boats will be out vying for a championship.
Classes 1-7 open the racing Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
“Superstock,” “Super Vee Extreme” and “Pro Stock Vee” will race at 11:30. “Supercat” will race at 12:30 and “Class One” and “Vee Extreme” at 2.
That night, an awards ceremony will be held at DiamondHead Beach Resort at 6:30 p.m.
“The FMB Chamber would like to thank everyone who had a hand in helping to return the Offshore Races to Fort Myers Beach,” Liszak said. “There was an incredible amount of work done behind the scenes to make this event possible and it couldn’t have been accomplished without the participation and team work of all involved. If you have never seen an Offshore Race, we encourage you to come out to the beach this weekend. This is a family friendly event that is great fun for all ages. Make sure you get here early and you utilize all of the public transportation that is available as parking on the island will be very limited. There are still plenty of hotel rooms and vacation rentals available, so why not consider spending a night or two for a ‘mini stay-cation.'”

Vacation in Paradise
Gaining speed on the water with offshore boat races.
Offshore powerboating is back and better than ever in Fort Myers Beach. Grab the kids, grab the grandparents, and get everybody out for a rip-roaring good time along the Gulf of Mexico waters .
What are the offshore boating races all about? We cover the when, the where, the how, and even the why of what makes this frenetic, fun, and family-friendly event such a draw in Fort Myers Beach.
The Roar Offshore National Championship Race
Offshore boating races are common along the Florida west coastline. But the event in Fort Myers Beach is the big one – a chance to finally crown a champion for the season. The Roar Offshore race is the culmination of months, if not years, of hard work. With our pet-friendly Fort Myers Beach rentals near all the race action, it’s easy to book a rental online and participate in all the festivities.
The Roar Offshore event features real speedboats racing along the water at speeds of 180 miles per hour or more. It is dangerous, fast, and incredible. Guests of our Fort Myers Beach rentals can feel the rush of the wind when the boats roar past them along the gulf as well as the rumble in their stomachs of the powerful roaring engines.
Attendees line up along the beach and watch as the boats soar on by roughly 50 to 100 yards out. You can take a spot just about anywhere on Estero Island and see the action unfold. The race carries participants along almost the whole span of the island.
A Weekend of Activities
While it may seem like there is only one race, there are actually many smaller races involved in the event as well. These smaller weekend races will lead up to the big national championship race.
These offshore boat races run from Oct 10th to Oct 12th.
The festivities officially begin on the evening of Oct 10th. The whole shebang launches with a parade of racing boats. It is a casual run designed to announce who is participating and to show off the boats for the big race. Most of the boats will be pulled by trucks over land, giving you a first-rate look at them from close up. This is the Sarasota boat show side of the weekend festivities and the best time to see the boat up-close-and-personal. So be sure to plan ahead and book one of our Fort Myers Beach vacation rentals.
Many boats will remain on display as live music, food, and dancing continues into the evening.
Unofficial racing begins Friday at 9 a.m. at Salty Sam’s Marina. This is located at 2500 Main S. For the offshore boating event, the area is temporarily retitled the Race Village.
Many team racers will bring their boat out to the water for a quick rally run. Others will be available for meet-and-greets, photographs, and close-up viewing. This is your opportunity to interact with sponsors, meet the racers, and just enjoy your (hopefully) sunny and beautiful afternoon by the beach.
Finally, the event goes into full gear on Saturday morning. There are three scheduled races for the day, including two preliminary races and the final powerboat grand prix.
Who is Involved?
These offshore powerboat races are sponsored and run by the Offshore Powerboat Association. The group harnesses the power of the community to deliver a big and popular weekend extravaganza.
Many local restaurants offer special discounts during the event and have sponsored the festivities. This includes Coste Island Cuisine, Doc Ford’s Rum Bar and Grill, Nervous Nellies Waterfront Eatery, Yucatan Bar and Grill, and Cabana’s Beach Bar and Grille. These are all great options close to our awesome Fort Myers Beach vacation rentals.
Local radio stations and businesses are also sponsors, such as 100.1, 95.3 OLZ, the Fort Myers Tourist Development Center, iHeartMedia, Cat Country 107.1, and Creative Web Builders.
The event is crafted with one vision- to bring understanding and interest to the world of recreational boating and water sports . It helps attract people to the lovely beaches of Fort Myers and to show care and love for the local waters. It also happens to be an uproariously good time for all . If you can’t make this event, then come to another Fort Myers event during the year. So book your Fort Myers vacation rental and plan your next visit today!

2024 Roar Offshore Nationals Postponed to 2025
**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE** from the Roar Offshore Committee
Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach Powerboat Races 2024 Postponed Due to Infrastructure Concerns
Fort Myers Beach, FL – 3-19-24 - The organizers of the Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach Powerboat Races regret to announce that the event, scheduled for October 11th – 13th, has been postponed due to concerns regarding the areas infrastructure post Ian.
After careful evaluation, it was determined that many aspects of the event's infrastructure, such as dry & wet pits, parking, and lodging require additional attention and preparation to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants. As such, the decision was made to postpone the event to October of 2025.
"We understand the disappointment this may cause, but the safety and quality of the event are paramount," said Tim Hill, President of Roar Offshore. “Being full-time residents of this resilient community, we understand the importance of an event such as Roar Offshore to help in the return to normalcy. Unfortunately the land, docks, and lodging needed for this large scale multi-day event just are not in place.”
We appreciate your understanding and continued support of Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach Power Boat Races. For further information and updates, please visit www.roaroffshore.com or follow us on Facebook.
