Port Fairy Ocean Yacht Race
Ocean Race distance: | 135 nautical miles |
Safety Category: | 2 |
Start Location: | Queenscliff |
Start Time: | 4:30pm AEDT |
Start Date: | 14th February 2025 |
Race Record: | 14h 26m 20s by in 1984 |
For 2025, the ORCV’s traditional race to the historic and picturesque port of Port Fairy has been rescheduled to mid-February, taking advantage of more favourable weather conditions and providing a feeder race for yachts planning participate in the 75 th Adelaide to Port Lincoln race.
The 135 mile course runs SW from Queenscliff past the coastal resorts of Torquay, Anglesea, Lorne and Apollo Bay, before rounding Cape Otway and entering the southern ocean.
The second half of the race runs NW to Port Fairy, often with eased sheets or under Spinnaker, along Victoria’s spectacular shipwreck coast - past Moonlight head, Port Cambell and the 12 Apostles.
All-weather berthing is available at Port Fairy, including deep draft boats. Entrance depths are subject to the dredging program and tides, and deep draft boats arriving at low water may need to anchor in the bay prior to entry. Yachts drawing 2.4m or less are not expected to be tide-constrained.
The Port Fairy Yacht Club and the town are renowned for warm and excellent hospitality and, for those who need to return to Melbourne on Sunday night, there is a scheduled service departing Port Fairy at 4.37, arriving at Southern Cross at 9pm.
This is a Category 2 event, which is part of the ORCV Offshore and Double Handed Championships. The course has continuous VHF radio coverage and neither HF Radios nor Sat Phones are required.

Port Fairy Yacht Club 21-year lease in community's hands as council seeks feedback
THE Port Fairy Yacht Club's control of club buildings could depend on feedback in the next two weeks as a council seeks views on a 21-year lease.

Moyne Shire Council proposed a lease last year for the Griffiths Street site but then offered a licence agreement after the club raised concerns about the $4150 annual cost.
The club then campaigned against the licence proposal, arguing it would cost them security and venue hire income, forcing the council to now advertise the original lease and seek community feedback.
Yacht Commodore Darryl Cairns said the club now agreed it would pay the annual cost, although he believed it was less than other nearby yacht clubs such as Portland.
"We bit the bullet and it was going to be that or nothing. We are not happy with it, but we will deal with it," Mr Cairns said.
The lease expired in 2015 but Mr Cairns feared it could be a further "12-to-18 months" before a new lease was signed if successful.
The council had previously said a licence agreement would make the site available for council meetings, with the Port Fairy Community Centre expected to become unavailable in the future.
Mr Cairns said the club would be open to allowing the council to use the site for meetings.
"That is up for negotiation. They held their meetings there for 10 or 12 years and they paid us to have their meetings there," he said.
The building is currently also used for yoga, taekwondo, pilates and Mr Cairns said the club was now also in discussions with "a reasonably large group" also wanting to use the site once a week.
He said the yacht club's appeal to receive a lease had strong support from the community and he felt confident the lease would proceed.
People can provide feedback on the proposed lease agreement before February 5 on the Moyne Shire website and submissions will be considered in May.
