Coming from the sea

To the inner harbor of Flensburg you have to go from buoy 13/14 to the fire tower Kielseng (at night: white sector ).

After passing buoy 15 , steer into the light line 229 °

Be careful on the east side, there are deviation stakes in the water.

Further steering through the approx. 250 m wide entrance into the spacious harbor basin of the inner harbor is done by sight .

The silos at Harniskai to the east/opposite provide orientation for the approach.

The history of the Flensburger Shipyard (FSG)

For 150 years the FSG has been one of the major employers in our city. Wars, economic fluctuations and not least the competition from large far eastern shipyards make the history of the FSG a very eventful one. But the passion of Flensburg’s shipbuilders, their ability to reinvent themselves with sometimes market-moving innovations, and the courage of changing investors always ensure new perspectives.

From July 7, 2022 to September 18, 2022 we will present an exhibition as exciting as the shipyard’s history itself. With the help of the International Maritime Museum from Hamburg, the Flensburger Schifffahrtsmuseums and the Flensburger Shipyard (FSG), we will show spectacular exhibits from 150 years, many of them have never been seen in public before.

Flensburg - a city that seems to open a gate to the whole world. Not only has it been influenced by its 700-year history as a rum and merchant city, but also by its vicinity to the Danish border.

Since Flensburg overcame the Second World War with almost no damage, the historical city center has remained intact. One landmark you definitely shouldn’t miss is the gateway “Nordertor” which was built in 1595 and remains a symbol of the city to this day.

The Maritime Museum should not be missed either. It is located in an old customs building near the harbour and is home to a huge collection of replicated ship models. And Flensburg’s very own Rum Museum is also definitely worth your time.

Of course, a busy program isn’t necessary to have a good time. You can also simply let yourself drift through Flensburg’s alleys and historical merchant’s squares or enjoy the main street while shopping in one of the 500 stores. If you’re cruising the Baltic, Detlef Jens recommends taking the time to visit the beautiful Flensburg Fjord

Flensburg Fjord

All of a sudden we are between the two small islands and the water is very still and very clear. Somewhere ashore, a mule cries, but I have no time for that – the last of the boat’s momentum carries us quietly to a perfect spot just off the rickety wooden pontoons of the small isle and, as quietly as the surroundings are, our anchor slips into the water with hardly a splash. Ashore, some people are sitting in the sun, obviously very relaxed, sipping their wine and gazing across to us.

What a place! Despite sun, wine and mule we are not in Greece, but in the far north of Germany or, to be more precise, the very south of Denmark. The Ochseninseln , Oxen Islands as they are called, lie in the innermost Flensburg Fjord, which forms the Baltic border between the two countries. The smaller of the two, to the west, has a hostel for Danish schools but the larger one, to the east, can be visited.

Once, these islands were only used as secure pastures, hence the name. Later, a few families made a meagre living by fishing and boatbuilding on the islands and in 1845 the boatbuilder Lorenz Issack bought the larger island, which stayed with his family until 1982.

‘The anchorage between the two islands is sheltered in nearly all conditions’

A small but somewhat derelict boatyard still exists but one shed was transformed into a charming if rustic island inn, aptly named Øens Kro. Sometimes, if you are lucky, food and drinks will be served; sometimes not. The island is currently being run on an extremely laid back basis. At other times, live music acts perform and visitors come from the land in the small motorboat ferry that is operated by them.

This anchorage between the two islands is sheltered in nearly all conditions but one could, depending on wind direction and depth, also anchor anywhere else around the islands. It is best to approach the main anchorage (depth under normal conditions around 2 metres) from the north-east, the cut between the two islands to the south is very shallow indeed.

When coming round the island from the west, be very careful of a shoal spit extending from the smaller island northward, the end of which is marked by a small and quite inconspicuous pole. Shallows also extend east of the larger island. There is no tide as such in the Baltic but water depth can vary up to one metre, depending on wind. Check the depth before your final approach, which, without local knowledge, really should not be attempted in the dark.

There are plenty of other sheltered spots in this part of Flensburg Fjord. The delightful seafaring town of Flensburg itself is only just over three miles away, offering several first-rate yacht harbours and all onshore amenities. And just across to the German side of the Fjord lies the yacht harbour of Glücksburg where, during summer, many international regattas take place.

Sailing into the inner Flensburg Fjord presents something of a detour on most Baltic cruises – but one that is definitely well worthwhile.

Maritime museum and rum museum

Flensburg is a historic seaport and trading post. The Flensburg maritime museum explains the maritime history of the city with all of its stories about the port and merchant courtyards, the ships and shipowners, and the machinists and captains as well as their typical day on board. These are stories from far-off lands as well as from the coast of the homeland. Stories from the Danish West Indies about sugar, rum and slavery. Stories from the firth about butter transporters and women who spoke the Petuh dialect. Stories from the shipyard about engineers, riveters and welders.

The museum offers a rich experience for all of the senses. It features interactive, hands-on stations that require you to participate, watch, listen and marvel, making a visit to the museum a journey of discovery for sailors of all ages. Special exhibits, promotional days, holiday programmes, tours of the museum and the city, knot-tying courses, rum tastings, concerts, readings and presentations create a rich variety. Feel free to browse the museum gift shop and pass time in the Café.

The rum museum is in the cellar of the old customs building. It features a multimedia installation that lets viewers walk in the footsteps of Flensburg’s major merchant families and tells of the adventurous Danish West Indies voyages, the horrors of slavery and the wealth that the sugar and rum trade brought Flensburg. The film received an award at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards in 2014. Admission to the rum museum is free.

The fleet of traditional sailing boats, classic yachts and the steamers of the historic Port of Flensburg. The Captains Route and the Rum & Sugar Mile begin at the maritime museum. Simply put: Flensburg’s maritime history is alive at the port!
