Royal Van Lent Shipyard (one of the Royal Dutch Shipyards group), builder of the high-end Feadship brand is one of the many luxury lifestyle houses of LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy), the global leader in select luxury brands. The Feadship Group was formed in 1949 as a marketing partnership of six Dutch shipyards—de Vries Lentch, Van de Stadt, Witsen & Vis, Akerboom, De Vries Schoepsbouw, and Van Lent Shipyard, plus De Voogt Naval Architects.

After WWII collapsed the European market for recreational vessels, the Van Lent family envisioned an opportunity with the booming American market and introduced Feadship to the American public at the 1951 New York Boat Show, impressing Show judges and clients with the high quality and especially, with the skillful use of steel and aluminum, which was rarely used by North American yacht builders at that time. As orders poured in, Feadship no longer built wooden boats after 1955 and was firmly established in the American market, having attracted the attention of the wealthy and famous, including publishing magnate, Malcolm Forbes, who commissioned the first of his three Feadships named The Highlander, in 1957. Today many of these classic yachts from the 1960s are leading members of the Feadship Heritage Fleet, an independently operated owners group established in 2013 for social gatherings.

In addition to new custom superyacht construction, Feadship designs and builds custom Tenders for continuity with the Feadship experience and offers dedicated charter and refit services exclusively for Feadships. To maintain brand value, Feadship offers a Certificate of Authenticity program by Feadship experts to owners and captains for a comprehensive inspection and evaluation of older Feadships. Those that have been maintained to builder standards of perfection will be presented the Feadship Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring brand value to a buyer of a preowned Feadship.

As of 9/22/21 there are about three dozen Feadship yachts listed for sale in the USA, Bahamas, and Europe, and Asia. Below are some stats regarding currently available preowned Feadships. Currencies fluctuate with Foreign Exchange rates; listed prices are not exact, but an indication of the high value retained by these exceptional yachts.

Of the two classic Feadships from the 1950s, the 1957 Feadship 90ft Sailing Vessel in the Netherlands is the oldest, priced at about $2,334,000. The 1958 Feadship 83ft Motoryacht in France is listed at about $1,038,000.

There are 11 classic yachts from the 1960s and 1970s, ranging in length from the 1965 53ft van Lent in the Netherlands priced at about $557,000 to the timeless 1975 145ft Custom Motor Yacht priced at about $17,600,000.

Eleven custom Feadship Motor Yachts from the 1980s and 1990s range in length from the 1984 87ft Gentlemen’s Sport Yacht in Newport, RI priced at nearly $6million to the 158ft 1997 Tri Deck MY in Cannes, France at about $14,900,000 and the 1986 162ft Tri Deck MY in Newport, RI for about $8,500,000.

The final group of 11 Feadship Motor Yachts from years 2000 to 2020 range in length from the 2016 111ft custom motor yacht in Hong Kong priced at about $18,800,000 to the 2007 220ft custom motor yacht in Italy for about $63,400,000. The highest priced Feadship superyacht on the market is the 2013 203ft custom motor yacht asking about $104,447,000.

Some of the most unusual and famous Feadship superyachts are VENUS, a high-tech, ultra-private yacht built for the late Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, Inc. and launched in 2012; COMO/LADY MAY launched 2014, is one of the most innovative 138ft superyachts (along with VENUS), for the utilization of glass technology; launched in 2007, the 218ft PREDATOR with x-bow was designed for a client wanting a sport yacht look and speed—planing hull can hit 28 knots; MADAME GU, 297ft Feadship launched in 2013, also features a long sporty profile, but on a full-displacement hull—named Motor Yacht of the Year in 2014 World Superyacht Awards; launched in 2015, SYMPHONY is one of Feadships largest at 304ft—features a dark blue hull and 18ft contraflow pool; famous Feadship HIGHLANDER, was built for publisher Malcolm Forbes in 1967 (first of three) and is one of the most beautiful classic yachts; winner of Motor Yacht of the Year 2016 World Superyachts Awards, SAVANNAH was launched in 2015 and features CG Designs’ ground-breaking interior of curved walls and corridors, rich woods, intricate stonework, and 50 sliding doors, along with the clean, elegant exterior by Feadships’ De Voogt Naval Architects and the eco-friendly Breathe hybrid propulsion developed by Feadship Royal Dutch Shipyards in 2010; AQUARIUS, the 276ft ultra-quiet Feadship superyacht commissioned by hospitality magnate, Steve Wynn was designed and engineered to his exacting standards—features crew quarters for a staff of 31 and seven staterooms by Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design for 14 guests.

Project 821: The World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Superyacht

How do you store compressed liquid hydrogen on a superyacht at the equivalent of minus-423 degrees Fahrenheit?

This was the toughest question Dutch builder Feadship faced as it set out to create Project 821, the world’s first hydrogen-cell superyacht. “The aim has been to develop a new, clean technology not just for this project, but for the world,” says Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship director and CEO at Royal Van Lent Shipyard.

Hydrogen fuel cells offer great promise for combustion-free cruising, with only electricity and water as their byproducts. But unlike with vehicles and spacecraft, the technology is new to recreational yachts. Weight isn’t the problem because hydrogen is light, but safely storing it on a vessel requires a double-walled cryogenic tank in a dedicated room. According to Feadship, it takes eight to 10 times more space to store hydrogen than the energy equivalent in diesel fuel.

Project 821’s size, at 390 feet long, made it a good candidate to test the technology. The tank on board holds about 4 tons of hydrogen, with the system able to provide a week’s worth of silent operation at anchor, or navigating at 10 knots while leaving harbors or cruising in protected marine zones.

All of that was achieved in addition to the kind of luxury that Feadship clients demand. The yacht’s design is by RWD, with owner representation by Edmiston. It has the most hull openings of any Feadship to date, with 14 balconies. Guest amenities include an elevator and a library.

“We have now shown that cryogenic storage of liquefied hydrogen in the interior of a superyacht is a viable solution,” Verkuyl says. “Future innovations on fuel cells and onboard reforming of methanol to hydrogen are on the near horizon.”

New Horizons

There were no regulations for hydrogen storage and fuel-cell systems on a superyacht, so Feadship, along with Edmiston and Lloyd’s Register, developed appropriately scaled equipment, protocols and safety regulations as part of the build.

Record-Setter

Project 821 is also the largest motoryacht ever launched in the Netherlands. It is about the same length as Feadship’s Launchpad, but with 30 percent more volume.

MONARA Yacht for Sale

The 84’ (25.80m) 1969 motor yacht MONARA is a classic gentleman’s cruiser with unparalleled attention to detail seen throughout her build. In 2016, she benefitted from a complete rebuild at Feadship’s yard in Makkum and is a proud member of Feadship’s Heritage Fleet . Feadship’s refit department worked closely with the owner’s team to make the necessary updates and upgrades. MONARA is equipped with Zero Speed stabilizers and all the latest technologies and AV equipment. Her electric battery autonomy allows her to stay completely silent overnight.

As guests enter MONARA’s main salon from the aft deck, they will notice a large, open space finished in oak and upholstery. An L-shaped settee is to port and opposite is a full-length cabinet that houses a built-in pop-up TV. Aft to starboard are stairs leading to the guest cabins and access to the master cabin is forward near the dining area. There is a glass panel on the floor of the salon that offers visibility of the beautifully restored Gardner main engines. The engine room lighting has been adapted to offer ambient lighting that flows into the salon in the evenings. The yacht’s galley is fully-equipped and features a Dutch door that opens directly to the main deck. MONARA combines the timeless aesthetic of her pedigree build with an excellent layout that offers guests the best comfort and flexibility.  

The yacht comfortably accommodates eight guests in four well-appointed staterooms. Her master cabin is queen-size with a built-in desk, a settee, plenty of drawer storage space and a large walk-in wardrobe. Four large hull windows flood the space with natural light and stunning views of the sea. Priva-Lite glass on the bathroom door further lightens the cabin and turns opaque at the touch of a button. As with the other cabins, the LED TV is hidden behind a one-way mirror, leaving it completely out of sight when switched off. Below deck and aft is the VIP cabin with an en-suite bathroom. Down the same staircase are two further guest cabins with a shared bathroom midships. Both guest cabins can be quickly transformed into either two single or double beds.

MONARA’s classic lines give her a touch of character and plenty of elegance. Her trademark clipper bow, canoe stern and welded steel hull and superstructure make her a stand out on the water. MONARA’s covered aft deck boasts a horseshoe of comfortable seating and a settee that welcomes 12 guests around an extendable teak-varnished wood table. Her sundeck itself runs much of the length of the yacht, with lounging and dining spaces. There is an oversized 10-person sunbed aft with an integrated table that can be raised to convert to a dining area. The center is home to an L-shaped lounge sofa with a coffee table, and forward is an additional eight-person sunbed. The yacht’s sundeck is covered with high-tension shade sails. These sails can be adapted to the amount of shade required.

Monara’s classic canoe stern offers an aft deck under the extended top deck which includes a built-in U-shaped settee aft that will accommodate 12 around an extendable teak varnished wood table. In addition, there are five teak chairs, an icemaker and drinks fridge.

The upper deck has a large 10-person aft sun bed featuring an integrated table that can be raised to transform into a dining / lounge seating. The center of the upper deck has an L shaped lounge sofa with coffee table and 2 fauteuils.

Forward, above the wheelhouse is a further 8-person sun bed with seating. The chimney houses a retractable gas barbeque (disconnected), 2 fridges, one wine fridge and a wetpoint with hot/cold water.

The upper deck Sonos music system consists of 8 x 250-watt speakers and a built in 1000 watts subwoofer.

The sundeck is covered with high tension “shade sails”. These sails can be adapted to the amount of shade required. The supports for the shade sails have a built in LED directional spots which illuminates indirectly the shade sails at night.

Step through the automatic opening teak door into a large salon finished in oak and upholstery. An "L" shaped settee is to port and opposite is a full-length cabinet with including a built-in pop-up TV, an icemaker and drinks fridge to serve the aft deck and salon. The stairs to the guest cabins are aft to starboard. Access to the master cabin is forward on the starboard side next to the dining area.

The salon has a glass panel in the floor to show the immaculately restored Gardner main engines. The engine room lighting is adapted to offer “ambiance” light in the evenings into the salon.

The bridge can be accessed through the salon, and through two “Dutch doors” either side which can provide access to the main deck. The bridge also offers a second salon with 2 raised L shaped settees and tables, allowing full panoramic views.

All bridge and navigation equipment can be electrically lowered to completely hide all controls and navigation systems.

The extensive rebuild transformed the bridge in a neat and clean area leaving whilst still boasting the original (restored) steering wheel, engine controls and compass.

Opposite the dining table on starboard is the semi-open galley with a 4-plate induction hob, oven/microwave, dishwasher and large fridge. The galley also has a “Dutch door” that can open directly to the main deck. The worktop is finished in black granite and brushed stainless steel.

Master Cabin

The master cabin is forward and has a queen size bed, a built-in desk, settee, large drawers featuring a locker cabinet and 1 large walk in wardrobe. 4 large hull windows flood the cabin with natural light and stunning sea views. Priva-Lite glass in the bathroom door further lightens the cabin and turns opaque at the touch of a button. The ensuite is a large wet room, with her & hers sinks and two hull windows with sea views.

As with all other cabins, the LED tv is hidden behind a one-way mirror, leaving it completely out of sight when switched off. The master cabin also has a superior AV system, with a subwoofer hidden under the bed, producing excellent quality noise and vibration when watching a movie or listening to music. Music is also available in the bathroom.

Vip & Guest Cabins

Below deck and aft, is the VIP cabin with ensuite bathroom / toilet. Down the same staircase you will find two further guest cabins with a shared bathroom / toilet midships. Both guest cabins can be quickly transformed into either two single or double beds. LED tv’s are hidden behind one-way mirrors, leaving them completely out of sight when switched off.

Crew Quarters

The crew cabins are accessed through the foredeck “doghouse”. There are 2 crew cabins with 2 superposed beds in each cabin. The port cabin has an upper bed that can be extended to provide a double bed. There is a large crew shower and toilet, with ample storage.

Below the crew quarters is a large storage area. This space contains a large washing machine, drying machine, two freezers and lots of storage space for food, drinks etc.

Bulbous Bow

A bulbous bow was fitted during the rebuild to reduce fuel consumption, compensate added weight in the bow and for better sea keeping.

Monara’s sea keeping is more comfortable due to much less pitching against the waves. Also, the bow contains the underwater camera and light.

Entertainment Systems

All cabins and the salon are equipped with a PC based entertainment system. As well as movies, tv and music, the system allows guests and crew to view the mast, aft deck cameras and the special stern and bow underwater cameras.

The salon, pilot house, aft deck and upper deck are equipped with a “Sonos” sound system. This system allows remote control by either the Sonos controller, or any PC, Mac, tablet or smart phone. All areas can play synchronized music, or separate music choices and volumes. There is in addition an Ipod docking station in salon.

All technical systems are concentrated in the engine room. The Waste tank, boilers, pumps, hydraulic power packs are fully rebuilt in 2016. By keeping all systems in the engine, it has reduced the interior noise and prevents any guest spaces being disturbed should a fault arise.

Toilet System

A “Gravity” based sewage system for the toilets allows for “silent” flushing. This system does not have any noise producing pumps or macerators in or under the cabins.

Electric Systems

The 4000 amps maintenance free gel batteries provides at least 8 hours of autonomous power for all systems. This includes power for all 220- and 380-volts consumers including air- conditioning, pumps, lighting etc.

All lighting is LED and dimmable. Using LED reduces the power consumption with 75% for lighting.

This system allows complete “silent” running while at anchor, or in port without shore power.

While underway on either one or two Gardner main engines, each main engine provides ample charging power to maintain/charge the batteries and still have all systems running. The use of the auxiliary generators is not needed while cruising.

Heat Recovery

All waste heat for cooling the main engines or generator is reused for heating the warm water supply.

Pre-heating or maintaining operation temperature for the main engines is taken from the generator’s cooling system, electric or diesel burner.

Fuel Economy

M/Y Monara’s propulsion, hull design and engines allow for a low fuel consumption. With the correct conditions, guests enjoy a reduction of around 30% less than a conventional yacht of this size.

Tests showed an average consumption of 33 litres per hour total both engines running.

Engine Room

The engine room was completely rebuilt with new systems in during the 2016 refit.

The main engines had a full 2016 rebuild, repainted with special 2 component paint, chromed details and polished copper piping.

The engine room layout allows easy access to all systems, ensuring reduced maintenance and repair costs.

There is full electronic main engine monitoring through a NMEA 2000 system. There are sensors for measuring each cylinder exhaust temperature, 2-point water temperature, rpm sensors for prop shafts and engines to allow precise synchronizing. Vacuum meters on all fuel filters, allowing replacement only when needed. Temperature regulated ventilation to reduce power consumption. Maintenance free prop shaft stuffing boxes. Full toolkit, including Gardner special tools and workbench.

Reliability

Monara was rebuilt with all modern systems, should there be a major power/electronics failure, her rebuild ensures that she can still run in all circumstances.

The main engines can be manually started, and power will then be generated with one or all 4 alternators of 400 amps capacity each.

The engine controls are 100% mechanically operated, no electric or hydraulic power required. Each engine still has mechanical temperature and oil pressure gauges fitted.

Fuel supply can be rapidly chosen for each engine from either the forward or aft tanks, should the unfortunate instance that one of the tanks is contaminated.

There are 3 ways to pump the bilges; fire pump, regular bilge pump or main engine seawater pump.

The AC power can be supplied directly from shore or generator, should there be an issue with any of the 3 Victron converters.

At the center of the C lies an atrium with floating stars and a lift without walls that allows seafarers to navigate decks in a novel fashion. Highlights of the living quarters include a duplex owner’s suite, a partially enclosed sea lounge that can be used at anchor or on the waves, a beach club with a sea-level dining area, and a private observation deck with an articulating crow’s nest. To top it off, C is outfitted with two infinity pools that match the hexagonal shape of the atrium and other seating areas.

C also shines on the technology front. She features a sleek hull and a fully electric propulsion system similar to sisterships Breathe and Savannah that renders her 30 percent more efficient than a typical 246-footer with dual shafts, propellers, and rudders, according to Feadship. Her streamlined underwater profile means less wake, too.

C will also be equipped with fuel cells and lithium-metal batteries that will together cover all power needs. (Feadship has also incorporated fuel cells on Project 821 .) Green methanol will be the fuel of choice due to its relatively high density and ease of use. Normal cruising speed on the fuel cells is 14 knots, while a top speed of 17 knots can be achieved by adding the battery power. In addition, two wave-actuated fins can generate enough grunt to cover one-third of the hotel load.

C will be fully unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show next week. The yacht is just a concept at this stage, but Feadship says she is completely buildable. Perhaps the yard will land a buyer at the show.

Every year, Feadship Royal Dutch Shipyards presents a concept design at the Monaco Yacht Show. From September 25-28, 2024, as the shipyard celebrates the 75th diamond anniversary of the brand, Feadship's Studio De Voogt welcomes show guests to view their hospitality stand to learn about "C," a forward-looking design inspired by the cut facets of the world's favorite precious gemstone.

The 75-meter Concept C was so named for carbon, and for its homonym-like relationship to the words Sea and See. Boasting broad expanses of glass, the concept intends to take a cue from diamond gemstones, with a sparkling, dazzling, mesmerizing profile built with top-of-tech style.

Interior Spaces

The center of the yacht, also the center of guest circulation, is described as a light-filled gallery and fluid living space. Subtle transitions between decks engage with mezzanine half-levels, opening the spaces served by a combination of floating stairs and a lift without walls, described as a "flash of brilliance."

A posh beach club with sea-level dining and a partially enclosed lower deck sea lounge offer guests intimate connections to the sea. A pair of hexagonal pools with infinity edges to port and starboard are surrounded by a variety of seating areas. The duplex owner's suite connects to an articulating crow's nest accessed from the private observation deck.

Mechanical And Technological Innovations

According to Feadship, Motor Yacht C is fully researched and readily buildable. C will draw 100 percent of her power needs from fuel cells directly running on methanol with lithium metal batteries. Research has pointed Feadship in the direction of methanol as the best of current technologies, taking an additional step towards decarbonization of yachting activities. Ease of use and higher density were cited as advantages.

The yacht is expected to deliver a cruise speed of 14 knots with a maximum of 17 knots achieved with the addition of battery power to the DC electrical grid. Lower Deck Operation and Navigation Hub

In an unusual placement, the command center on the lower deck between the crew area and beach club embraces fully digital operation and navigation. The hub boasts top-of-industry situational awareness technology using cameras and data fusion. The unique location puts crew tasks in close proximity to one another, improving communication between engineering and navigation crews. The location also maximizes valuable guest spaces yielding improved owner value with the same gross tonnages.

Previous Monaco Yacht Show Concept Presentations

In 2023, Feadship unveiled its 12th concept yacht, Dunes , from its Studio De Voogt. highlighting passive reduction of energy use, amplified by the use of shading overhangs, along with elimination of teak decks, and a stacked radical propulsion system.

The presentation in 2022 featured Feadship's concept yacht Slice . Designed with a distinctive flow, inside and out, Slice redefined onboard circulation through unique atriums, and a 110 square meter pool deck. The technical area of the yacht was designed to accept low-to-no emission fuels, including biofuel, methanol, ethanol, and hydrogen fuel cell propulsion technologies.

The 2024 Monaco Yacht Show will showcase Concept Yacht C at the Feadship Hospitality Stand. This ... [+] year, the stand will not be located in the shipbuilder T-dock section, but at an offsite location, providing a suitable space for celebrating the brand's 75th anniversary.
