De zeven grootste superjachten van Nederlandse bodem

Samen met Italië is Nederland ’s werelds grootste speler op het gebied van luxury yachts. De kracht van de Nederlanders zit hem in de kennis en samenwerking in eigen land. De Nederlandse bouwers hebben een prachtig internationaal portfolio.

7. Nirvana | 88,5m / 290,4 ft

De laatste van dit lijstje, maar zeker niet de minste. Nirvana is ontworpen door Azure Naval Architects en Oceanco. Het zes dekken hoge superjacht heeft een bijzonder 7,5 meter zwembad, met een in hoogte verstelbare vloer. De master suite heeft een panoramisch uitzicht over het voordek en is compleet met kantoor, privé-dek en spa zwembad. Aan de gasten is ook gedacht, er is plaats voor 12 gasten in de vijf VIP-kamers.

6. Equanimity | 91,5m / 300 ft

Equanimity  is een van de weinige superjachten die in het bezit is van de Passenger Yacht Code (PSC), wat betekent dat er 36 gasten aan boord mogen verblijven. Voor Oceanco zelfs de eerste met dit certificaat. Er zijn voldoende gastenverblijven aan boord, met twee VIP-rooms met uitklapbare balkons. Om in shape te blijven is er een ruime gym met daarnaast een sauna.

5. Aquarius | 92m / 301 ft

In stilte glijdt Aquarius  door het water. Volgens Feadship is het jacht het stilste dat zij in het jaar 2016 hebben gebouwd. Het schip werd in opdracht van de Amerikaanse miljardair Steve Wynn gebouwd, die al meerdere jachten liet bouwen. Het interieur is beïnvloed door zijn horeca- en casino-achtergrond. Aan boord is ruimte gemaakt voor een deel van zijn uitgebreide privé-kunstcollectie die onder meer bestaat uit schilderijen van Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet en Matisse.

4. Faith | 96,55m / 316 ft

De ruime boeg heeft voldoende plek voor het landen van een helikopter, benedendeks is een garage ingericht om een Bell 429 WLG-helikopter voor acht personen te stallen. Naast het 2,5 meter diepe zwembad op het zonnedek is een houtoven geïnstalleerd om heerlijke pizza’s in te bakken, of in te laten bakken. Faith is wederom een prachtontwerp van Feadship.

3 Madame Gu | 99m / 324 ft

Madame Gu is het op één na grootste superjacht van Feadship en betreedt met haar 99 meter het podium op de derde plaats. Na vier jaar bouwen werd ze in 2013 gelanceerd. Het schip beschikt over twee garages voor tenders van 11 meter. En niet te vergeten een gecertificeerde helikopteropbergplaats.

2 Symphony | 101,5m / 333 ft

In 2015 leverde Feadship haar grootste superjacht tot nu toe, de 101,5 meter lange Symphony . Het jacht haalt een topsnelheid van 22 knopen en heeft ruimte voor 20 gasten in haar hutten. Het schip heeft twee bioscopen, waarvan een zich buiten op het brugdek bevindt. Een zes meter lang zwembad op het main deck is niet het enige bad voor verkoeling, naast het helikopterplatform kunnen opvarenden ook een frisse duik nemen. 

1: Jubilee | 110 m / 360 ft

Met haar 110 meter is Jubilee  het grootste in Nederland gebouwde superjacht tot nu toe. Het is de tweede samenwerking tussen bouwer Oceanco en de jonge Russische exterior designer Igor Lobanov. Eerder bouwden zij de 86 meter lange Amore Vero . De bouwer richt zich sinds 2002 op 80 meter plus jachten en heeft er inmiddels 16 succesvol te water gelaten. Het vlaggenschip biedt op haar acht dekken ruimte aan 30 gasten in 15 luxe hutten. De in samenwerking met Azure Naval Architects ontworpen romp zoeft met een topsnelheid van 18,5 knopen door het water.

Om te voldoen aan wet- en regelgeving rondom kansspelen zouden we graag eenmalig willen weten of je 24 jaar of ouder bent.

The Very Best of Dutch Yacht Builders

Dutch yacht builders have crafted a reputation as being among the world’s very best, with an extraordinary density of high quality, high value shipyards operating out of the Netherlands.

Part of the reason for the dominance of Dutch yacht builders in the superyacht industry stems from Holland’s prestigious history of boat building, which stretches back centuries and was perfectly poised to make the shift to constructing luxury yachts during the 20th century. The word ‘yacht’ originally comes from the Dutch word ‘jacht’, meaning hunt.

Some of the towering names of the yachting world have emerged from Holland, with the great heritage yards Amels, Hakvoort, Royal Huisman, De Vries and Royal Van Lent more recently joined by other outstanding Dutch yacht builders such as Heesen, Vitters, and Oceanco.

Dutch shipyards are heralded not only for their world-class build quality, high tech yards, and innovation, but are also renowned for reliability in finishing projects on time and on budget. With Dutch shipyards producing many fully-custom ‘one-off’ yachts, many of the yachts launched from Holland’s shipyards are extremely iconic and often win international awards.

Dutch yacht builders have also capitalized on their individual reputations for quality construction by forming strong collaborations including Feadship and HISWA, which serve to market the best of Dutch yachting internationally, thereby growing the influence of the Dutch yacht builders.

Notable Dutch Yacht Builders

This prestige brand is often known as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of yacht builders, constructing fully custom yachts from a ‘blank slate’ beginning. Feadship is actually a partnership between two of the greatest Dutch shipyards: De Vries and Royal Van Lent, with yacht building roots dating back to 1849. The Feadship fleet today is more than 450 strong, and includes some ground-breaking yachts including AQUARIUS and ECTASEA.

Founded in 1918 and boasting the largest and most high-tech shipyard in the Netherlands, Amels turned its hand to superyacht construction in the 1980’s. Amels builds fully custom yachts up to 656’ (200m), as well as their highly sought-after ‘Limited Edition Series’. Known for exceptional build quality and iconic yachts including HERE COMES THE SUN, Amels also builds a popular range of support yachts for superyachts through DAMEN, its parent company.

Royal Huisman

This family-run shipyard was founded in 1884, and has produced some of the finest sailing yachts afloat, with a long line of regatta honors and design awards across its fleet of maxi-yachts and performance cruisers. While its fame is recognized across the world for building sailing yachts such as ATHENA, Royal Huisman also builds motoryachts, including the award winning ARCADIA.

Hakvoort is another illustrious Dutch shipyard which dates back to 1919 and builds sailing and motoryachts up to 215’ (65m). With yachts constructed in steel and aluminum, Hakvoort offers a full-custom service from design to launch, as well as a 180’ (55m) semi-custom series. They have launched many notable, award-winning yachts, from LADY MARINA in 1994 to APOSTROPHE in 2013.

Founded in 1979, Heesen has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the yachting industry, and is now considered one of the most innovative Dutch yacht builders. Initially known as a builder of fast performance yachts, Heesen has expanded its yacht building capacity up to 260’ (80m) and has achieved notoriety for its revolutionary design and engineering, such as the Fast Displacement Hull Form first seen on multi-award-winning GALACTICA STAR.

One of the most respected names in sailing, the Vitters shipyard was founded in 1990 and has gone on to launch luxury sailing yachts known for winning superyacht regattas and international design awards. Constructing yachts over 30m with an uncompromising focus on quality and design, Vitters has received accolades for yachts including SARISSA, GANESHA and AQUIJO. Vitters also owns the Green Marine yard, which is responsible for building the Volvo Ocean Race fleet.

This Dutch yacht builder specializes in the large yacht market, constructing fully custom superyachts over 260’ (80m) in aluminum and steel. Oceanco opened its doors in 1990 and has been responsible for the launch of some of the industry’s most well-known yachts, including ALFA NERO, ANASTASIA and the largest Dutch yacht to be built thus far, the 360’ (110m) JUBILEE.

Located in the medieval Dutch town of Den Bosch, Moonen Shipyards is one of the world’s most well-known motoryacht builders. Having launched their first boat in 1963, Moonen pride themselves in quality and service and offer diverse options in the upper echelons of the yacht industry for fully customized superyachts up to 150’ (45m), custom series displacement yachts, explorer vessels or fast displacement all-aluminum powerboats.

Established as a family-owned shipyard in 1938, Mulder has become a renowned member of the Dutch yacht building family. The yards’ global reputation for quality has been built upon three main pillars: the classic Super Favorite Cruisers, the later Favorite Superior and a range of Mulder custom-built motor yachts from 42’ to 147’ (13m to 45m).

Van der Valk

A passionate yacht enthousiast, Wim van der Valk started the company that bears his name in 1967, and is still driving force behind it today. In applying the most advanced solutions, systems and materials possible, this pedigreed Dutch yacht builder believes in creating yachts that will stand the test of time. In the late 1990s, they introduced their signature product – the Continental I series. Today, to ensure unrivaled quality and exclusivity, Van Der Valk produces a select, limited number of Continental yachts each year.

Hartman Marine Group

Founded in 2003, Hartman Marine Group has roots which span back to 1775 with a heritage of seven generations of skipper-owners. Hartman yachts hold a timeless and fresh style without compromising practicality and superb comfort, in the true fashion of Dutch boatbuilding excellence. Leveraging on experience, innovation as well as tradition, Hartman applies their robust standards from the drawing table to the unique finishing touches in every custom build.

Windrose of Amsterdam

When Chris Gongriep wanted to finish his 13-metre wooden barge under his own management in 1990, little did he know that the shipyard he founded for this purpose, De Hemmes , would be the start of a bright future as a world-renowned superyacht builder.

While customers continued to request well-known Lemsteraken , Chris’ ambition grew into building the ideal charter yacht. After years of extensive study, Sapphire was built in 1996, a classic 31-metre sailing yacht. This was the start for Holland Jachtbouw and the transition to aluminium sailing and motor yachts was made.

Holland Jachtbouw grew into a successful yard with an extensive delivery program for superyachts up to 130 feet. The portfolio of more than thirty prestigious classic and modern superyachts in various categories demonstrate the craftsmanship and unlimited possibilities of the yard.

Athos , Topaz and Rainbow are just a few examples of dreams becoming reality; each demonstrating the extreme precision, passion for detail and love of craftsmanship with which they are built. Only dedicated specialists with decades of experience can achieve the quality of finish in new construction as well as refits and restorations. It is this quality, expertise and love for the profession that attracted the international clientele to Holland Jachtbouw.

Chris passed away in 2016 and at the request of his heirs, VMG Yachtbuilders continues the Holland Jachtbouw legacy with great respect for its founder. Its legacy is a fitting addition to VMG’s portfolio, which is in the same segment up to about 90 feet. Holland Jachtbouw is therefore moving to Enkhuizen, the epicenter of traditional yacht building and where the love and passion for craftsmanship is passed on from generation to generation.

Like a Phoenix rising from its ashes, Holland Jachtbouw will build the next generation of future classics at its new state-of-the-art location.

Superyacht building – A growing industry in times of a pandemic

While the world’s biggest cruise shipbuilders in especially Germany got into serious financial troubles and had to lay off thousands of workers and the whole cruise industry came to a total standstill, the Dutch specialists in the building of superyachts enjoyed a very good year last year. The number of orders they received in fact doubled.

In every issue of SWZ|Maritime, SWZ|Maritime’s editor-in-chief Antoon Oosting writes an opinion piece under the heading “Markets” about the maritime industry or a particular sector within it. In the September 2021 issue, he discusses the Dutch yacht building industry.

It is, to say the least, particularly noteworthy, striking and at the same time uplifting for the Dutch shipbuilding industry that the yacht industry is doing so well. In a recent podcast of Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT), project director Roderick Gort of Dutch superyacht builder Oceanco from Alblasserdam confirmed that the near future prospects for his yard and its Dutch competitors like Feadship, Damen Yachting, Royal Huisman, Heesen and Moonen are just fine. ‘There is a healthy commercial market,’ Gort said.

The fact that at the end of 2020 the Dutch yards were building no less than thirteen superyachts on speculation, meaning they started construction without yet having a customer for it, is a clear sign of the confidence that the yards have in the future. Confidence that is based on excellent figures on new orders. From new orders worth € 1.067 billion in 2018 and € 1.012 billion in 2019, the newly received orders rose to a staggering € 2.150 billion last year. With this,the value of the total orderbook grew from € 4.078 billion in 2018 and € 4.021 billion in 2019 to a very healthy volume of € 5.380 billion last year. I bet there aren’t that many people who would have dared to predict this in January/February 2020, when the world turned into a deep crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A very uncertain market

In the podcast, Gort also told that at the beginning of 2020, the atmosphere was very uncertain. The yard’s management monitored the developments of the pandemic from day to day and decided to take measures at an early stage. The obligation to wear a face mask in the workplace was implemented and everyone who was not constantly needed at the offices in Alblasserdam and the recently acquired new facilities in Zwijndrecht had to work from home.

The workers that had to keep working on the yachts, including the personnel of suppliers, had to be tested every day. Oceanco has set up its own test site for this. ‘All this to be able to work safely… Our suppliers, too, realy appreciated this way of working. It has created a very safe working environment and allowed us to continue working in full,’ Gort explained. And there was enough work, as after the first uncertain months in spring, the first orders began dropping in.

Richest man in the world

A clear sign that despite the first panic about the economic consequences of the pandemic the superyacht business was not doing so badly at all, were the reports in May 2020 that the at that moment richest man in the world – e-commerce giant Amazon’s Jeff Bezos – had ordered a 127-metre three-mast yacht at Oceanco. This mega sailing yacht worth several hundreds of millions of euros will be accompanied by a smaller ship with a helicopter platform to provide the yacht with supplies. Whatever one might think about the superrich that always get richer, this is also a huge compliment to the Dutch superyacht industry and recognition of the unrivalled quality the Dutch yards can deliver.

Like Genie, the genie from Aladdin’s lamp, the Dutch yacht builders make the dreams of their clients come true. And like Oceanco’s project director Gort pointed out, the clients are dreaming of a unique and everbigger, longer yacht. So, the yachts are getting longer and more and more custom built. And about ten years ago, the Dutch yacht builders were especially strong in building yachts from thirty to sixty or seventy metres, but now they compete with the German yards that were always building the biggest yachts.

Moreover, in the category of less than 100 metres, the Dutch yards continue to be a strong competitor to the Germans and especially the Italian and Turkish yards.

A good year

Like Feadship, Damen Yachting, Oceanco, Royal Huisman, Heesen and Moonen all booked good results in 2020. According to the annual report of NMT, the size of the yachts delivered varied between 24 and 120 metres. The Netherlands is building ever larger yachts. In 2020, six yachts were sold that were eighty metres or larger (megayachts). In 2019, that was still only one. The orderbook of the Dutch yards currently contains fifteen yachts of eighty metres or larger.

NMT warns that the growing amount of work also has a downside. Several suppliers can’t process more orders as the workloads are greater than they can normally handle. NMT emphasizes the need for more intensive cooperation between yards and suppliers.

Due to the pandemic and travel restrictions imposed by authorities, a lot of shows were cancelled and even the selling process was hit. Royal Huisman and Moonen did manage to sell some ships online, however.

Travel restrictions

Those travel restrictions also hampered the construction of the yachts as clients, supervisors and superintendents that must monitor refits, and future crews, who had to be trained with their new ship, experienced difficulties with entering the Netherlands. Deliveries were not always easy to handle. But when NMT published its annual report in May this year, it could also be reported that this matter had successfully been solved in good cooperation with the responsible department and border control.

Travelling easily to and from the Netherlands is also a basic precondition for the refitting of yachts. Under the umbrella of NMT, the yacht building industry works together in the Holland Yachting Group to strengthen the interests of the Dutch yacht building industry. One of the opportunities the Holland Yachting Group has identified, is the growing need for refits. Super- and megayachts change ownership ever more often, or the owners want their ships modified and adjusted to the requirements of the future or to make the propulsion and energy systems of the ships more sustainable.

For still just a decade ago, clients often wanted their newbuilt superyacht to be able to sail fast. So, superyachts were often equipped with very powerful engines that used a lot of fuel. But sailing at high speed often goes at the cost of comfort with more noise and vibration. Yet, according to the project director of Oceanco, owners are also becoming aware that installing so much power often has no sense and nowadays there is more need for a more efficient power train that uses far less energy.

The Dutch are warming up to refits

‘Customers like to come back to the original builder of their yacht,’ Gort stated in the NMT podcast. ‘The original builder has the network of suppliers and can meet any requirements demanded by the customer at short notice. As a result, the barrier to sail their yacht to northwestern Europe is gone.’

With this in mind, Oceanco has taken over the former yard of offshore supplier Heerema in Zwijndrecht and Royal Huisman has opened a new site in Amsterdam. Royal Van Lent, which belongs to the Feadship group, has also opened a second yard, in addition to the one on Kaag island, in the Amsterdam port area. In the port of Rotterdam there are initiatives as well to do more with the refit of super- and megayachts.

While for many in the Netherlands the superyacht industry stays a rather unknown sector, the Dutch superyacht yards have an excellent reputation. Every year, new Dutch yachts are awarded important professional prizes. In 2020, Feadship won awards with three yachts at the World SuperYacht Awards. These were M/Y Pi (Motor yacht of the year, displacement motor yachts between 1500 GT and 1999 GT); M/Y Najiba (Displacement motor yachts between 500 GT and 999 GT); and M/Y Lady S (Displacement motor yachts between 2000 GT and 4999 GT). Another award went to Royal Huisman/Huisfit for the refit of S/Y Vagrant (category Re-built yachts).

The yacht as a corona bubble

For the success of the superyacht in a time that the world has suffered an enormous amount of casualties and a lot of people as well as the economy have to conform to annoying restrictions, Oceanco’s project director Gort has a statement as remarkable as it is simple. Super- and megayachts offer a private and safe area to pass your holidays, in easily controlled surroundings. The crew of a superyacht consists of up to fifteen or twenty people plus the guests that the owner chooses himself.

That is of course a number of people that is far more easily controlled and tested than those on a big cruise ship where the number of passengers and crew can be up to 7000 or 8000 (Oasis-class Royal Caribbean). ‘A superyacht is easy to control and to keep clean,’ according to Gort.
