Flying Fox: The Largest Charter Yacht in the World

Flying Fox effortlessly vaulted to the title of largest private charter yacht in the world.

By Ellie Brade

A yacht the size of the 446-ft M/Y Flying Fox rarely comes onto the charter market. Following her spring 2019 delivery, this one-of-a-kind vessel effortlessly vaulted to the title of largest private charter yacht  in the world.

It is hard to know where to begin when trying to do justice to Flying Fox . Built in Germany by Lürssen , under the supervision of Imperial acting as builder supervisor and owner’s representative, she features a dove gray hull and distinctive curved exterior lines by Espen Øino, with an interior by Mark Berryman. Her staggering length of 446 ft, a beam of 74 ft and her huge volume mean it is no surprise that one of the yacht’s biggest assets is the sheer amount of space on board, both inside and out.

“ Flying Fox ’s layout has been wisely thought out by her designers to ensure that each area offers guests something unique, whether that is a two-story salon to entertain or a cinema room to be entertained,” says Julia Stewart, director of Imperial, the exclusive charter agent for Flying Fox . “The attention to every single detail has been critically observed to provide guests an unforgettable luxurious experience on board.”

A true passion project developed in close collaboration with her owner, Flying Fox ’s appealing design makes her eminently suited to the yacht charter market. Developed to be a home away from home, the yacht is packed with a near-endless list of features that make it hard to consider the idea of ever leaving.

“ Flying Fox caters to all types of charter guests thanks to her beautiful looks and limitless amenities,” says Stewart. “If you want to set out on an adventure, there are all the toys and tenders you will need and highly trained instructors to take care of you; if fine food is more what interests you, then the culinary offering is unrivaled; for wellness lovers, the spa is unparalleled.”

Flying Fox ’s contemporary and functional interior draws on Japanese influences to create a calm and serene environment that makes use of a small palette of colors and materials including bamboo, oak, fine stones and leather. Exquisite mosaic and tile work also feature throughout the decor. Fresh greenery and towering ficus trees and planters are special touches that enhance the entire vessel and effortlessly bring the outside in.

PYC compliant, and able to welcome up to 36 guests in the care of 54 expert crew, Flying Fox has accommodations for 25 guests in 11 cabins. These include a show-stopping master suite complete with 180-degree views, his and hers dressing rooms, a private beauty room and a sitting room complete with its own fireplace — one of five fireplaces on board. The 10 additional guest cabins each have their own sea terraces for a personal view across the ocean. Each cabin is en suite with a 75-in TV screen and media center, and has its own design flair.

A focal interior point for guests is the sweeping atrium-style, two-level salon, which takes full advantage of the available height and volume to deliver a large seating area that overlooks the main salon, with a real-wood fireplace, below. This light-filled haven invites guests to throw off the weight of the world and relax. Other popular interior spots include the full cinema with D-box seating for 14 guests, an Atmos sound system, media system with more than 3,000 movies, a virtual-reality system and an abundance of games. A private dining room, with another real fireplace and enough seating for all on board, boasts its own aquarium as part of the styling, and is the ideal setting for enjoying formal meals created by the yacht’s talented culinary team.

An emphasis on social living, wellness and relaxation is seen throughout and nowhere less so than the spa. “Covering 4,305 sq ft over two floors, the spa is a state-of-the-art achievement that has been called a ‘little Palace Hotel Merano,’” says Stewart. “From the impressive Jacuzzi set in the middle, through to the hammam, sauna, cryo sauna, dry and wet massage areas, or the fully equipped 970-sq-ft gym, the assets offered are above expectations and run by trained professionals, with proven credentials, or former Olympic athletes.” The cryotherapy chamber is of particular note, as it’s the first to ever be installed on a private yacht, and is able to go down to temperatures of -166 Fahrenheit; it will tick the boxes for those looking for a true endorphin rush. A private medic is also part of the crew on board.

This dedication to wellness is seen across every deck, with numerous spaces to gather, relax and enjoy the water. The nearly 74-ft-wide swimming platform serves as a base for sunbathing and utilizing the yacht’s vast collection of water gear that includes a large selection of tenders, jet skis and Seabobs. A fully equipped professional dive center is positioned on the port side of the lower deck, with two dedicated folding terraces. “The on-board dive center is the best ever built on a superyacht,” says Stewart. “Run by PADI-certified specialists who have the ability to train guests, it includes an impressive selection of gear of all sizes, its own breathing system that allows it to be completely autonomous and a three-seat decompression chamber.”

If the ocean doesn’t appeal, then head to the main deck, home to a truly impressive 40-ft pool. Placed transversely — a unique approach when compared to most superyacht layouts — the pool has an adjustable floor height that allows users to tailor their swim, with swim and massage jets at alternate ends. The pool is also a popular gathering spot for sunbathing or simply enjoying drinks and the undisturbed views. Other highlights across the four exterior decks include sheltered lounge areas, sun-drenched teak decks, two Jacuzzis — one on the owner’s deck and one on the sun deck forward — and the privately positioned roof deck that delivers escapism and serenity in equal measure.

Food lovers will appreciate the multitude of dining options found throughout the yacht. “On the cuisine side, Flying Fox is definitely out of this world: not only carrying some of the best chefs, with some having worked with Michelin-starred chefs, but also having impressive galley capacities and incredible areas to dine,” says Stewart. Favorite spots include the bridge deck, with a dining setup, bar and an open kitchen with cooking options, including a full-size rotisserie, tandoori, pizza oven and teppanyaki and churrasco grills, which ensure all tastes and flavors are covered.

While capable of traveling to far-flung destinations, Flying Fox is currently based in the Mediterranean. Access in even the most remote anchorages is easy thanks to the two helipads on board, with the upper deck helipad ranked as ‘18-meter D-Value’ and big enough to accommodate Flying Fox ’s Airbus H175 12-seat helicopter, the largest private helicopter in the world. The upper deck helipad has a double use and can transform into a dance floor like no other for partying under the stars.

The visionary  Flying Fox  yacht dwarfs her competitors — literally and figuratively — and delivers luxury escapism in the highest measure.

The Flying Fox superyacht

The Flying Fox is not only the world’s largest charter vessel; it’s pretty dang easy on the eyes.

Part of Monaco-based Imperial ’s fleet of charter yachts, the mammoth measures a staggering 466 feet in length and nearly 74 feet in width. Built by German yacht maker Lürssen, the vessel lays claim to the 14th largest interior in the world, according to Superyacht Times . That ample space provides room for 22 guests and a crew of 54. It also holds 11 staterooms, including a private master suite on the top deck with its own jacuzzi, and a number of VIP suites with terraces and ensuite bathrooms.

Elsewhere, the tastefully appointed Mark Berryman–designed bar area includes a two-story saloon, a wooden fireplace, a huge dining table with enough room for every guest and a movie theater with state-of-the-art A/V capabilities. The boat’s self-proclaimed “curvy and extraordinary” exterior, which was designed by Espen Øino , includes a 39-foot swimming pool, an extra-wide swim platform, beach club, on-deck jacuzzi and sundeck, not to mention a beauty salon and barbecue area. There’s also a 13,000-square-foot spa that offers a hammam, sauna, massage area and a gym. And just for kicks, the yacht also boasts not one but two helipads—because you never know who might be flying in for a visit.

The “Flying Fox”  Imperial

Should you get antsy on the vast deck, no need to get cabin fever. The Flying Fox has a small fleet of nine tenders, a professional dive center and a plethora of recreational toys, including four Sea-Doo jet skis, four Seabobs, kayaks, paddleboards and four Vespa GTS Super 300s in case you need to explore any nearby islands.

Despite its gargantuan size, the boat is no slouch when it comes to performance, either. According to Imperial, the superyacht is capable of a top speed of 20 knots and cruises at 15 knots.

If you want to take out the Flying Fox for a spin, you can request information about the boat from Imperial. In the meantime, see more photos of the vessel below.

Launched in 2019, this unique vessel at 136-metre length with a beam of 22.5 metres provides a comfortable living space as well as a spectacular design. Despite her extraordinary volume Espen Øino International managed to combine a very elegant and graceful exterior with an absolutely striking look. FLYING FOX’s balanced proportions provide generous spaces for numerous leisure activities. Highlights of her exterior profile include the sea terraces, platforms and the enormous aft swimming pool, which extends over the width of the main deck. Combining her flowing and dynamic curves with smart designs, each deck invites outdoor enjoyment throughout the day. In perfect harmony with the powerful exterior design, Mark Berryman Design has created a contemporary interior conveying a calming warm atmosphere with its soft, neutral tones and tactile finishes.

Unveiling The World Of Flying Fox: The Pinnacle Of Superyacht Charter Experience

Redefining experience at sea.

gray fox yacht

If Flying Fox, the largest superyacht on the market, could speak, she would politely request that her guests disregard any previous experiences of yacht charter that they may have.

As an iconic vessel that raised the industry’s standards to heights once thought unrealistic, she would be right to do so, as she truly offers a charter experience like no other.

Imagine arriving by sea or air to the long, flowing lines of this Lurssen masterpiece, where world class design by Espen Øino and Mark Berryman creates a distinctive, curved sculpture on the water.

gray fox yacht

Immediately on sight, guests will realise that this is more than a superyacht, it is an achievement of their dreams and ambitions of how to experience endless adventure and fun with their loved ones.

Guests boarding at the enormous swim platform will be greeted by an impressive resort style beach club and wellness centre, which includes a split-level spa stretching over two levels between the main deck and the beach club.

Here, guests will find the world’s first -110°c CryoSauna ever installed on a superyacht. No need to be a professional athlete to enjoy this rapid invigoration of the whole body! We recommend you follow this with a trip to the ‘wet massage room’ where you will lie under a warm rain shower while the therapist envelops you in a full body massage.

The wellness facilities on board Flying Fox rival those of any large hotel. Guests will discover hydro baths, hammam, sauna, and jacuzzis alongside long menus of dry and wet massage and beauty treatments, including full body algae wraps, LED light therapy, oxygen & mineral facial treatments and ultrasonic peeling.

gray fox yacht

To port, guests will find a huge sea-view gym complete with personal trainers who offer everything from HIIT training, bootcamps, aqua aerobics to yoga and shoreside guided running.

For the watersports fans, a world of fun awaits thanks to the dedicated centre and its team of instructors (who form part of the 55 crew on board), who are always ready to set you up with a kite, windsurf, dinghy, wake board, E-Foil, Seabob, jetski, or any other toy you may wish to try.

Dive enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that a full range of PADI courses are available through the onboard Dive Centre, which also offers specialist training such as Deep Water and Nitrox. Flying Fox has an IHC Hytech Deck decompression chamber built to the highest standards of professional diving, as well as closed circuit rebreathers for the ultimate underwater experience.

Those wishing to try diving for the first time can complete their first dives in the main swimming pool on the aft deck.

gray fox yacht

Swimming pools are a defining feature in the resort-like world of Flying Fox. The unique 12 metre pool on the main deck stretches almost full beam and is a popular gathering spot for guests. Its smart engineering means there are jet currents to swim hard against, and others to be massaged by. Its floor can be raised to create safe depths for children, or rise flush with the deck to increase entertainment space.

Extra entertainment space is a rare request however - the 5 decks of Flying Fox are cleverly designed to ensure all occasions – from intimate to huge – are catered for; and even the two helicopter decks can be transformed into party or dining space.

With the upper deck and bridge deck dedicated to alfresco dining and lounging, guests can cozy up around the firepits or in front of the outdoor cinema, while others watch the chef prepare dinner in the incredible exterior galley. The galley takes centre stage on the bridge deck and offers a range beyond most yachts thanks to its option to cook with open fire and coal. From a traditional Indian Tandoor, to a full size rotisserie capable of cooking a whole lamb, the options are a visual sensation that often have guests choosing to sit ringside to watch the chefs, rather than at the huge 22 seat outdoor dining table.

gray fox yacht

Flying Fox seems to have one purpose at her heart; the spiritual and physical welfare of her guests. Her interior attests to this with contemporary, clean lines and natural finishes that support the fundamental, beneficial goals of well-being on board.

Deliberately understated, the interior design emits a soothing environment that provides practical social and work spaces. Each area benefits from the greenery of living trees and plants, all bathed in natural daylight and watered by a hidden irrigation system that provides nutrients as well as water. Surrounded by trees in the vast open atrium, it is easy to forget you are floating, somewhere at sea.

gray fox yacht

Similarly relaxing are the eleven suites. The ten guest suites all offer an ensuite and lounge and are all similar in generous size and design, with the smallest boasting an impressive 37 square metres. Each guest cabin has a side deck balcony which can become a common balcony between two neighboring suites if family want to feel closer to each other.

The master suite can be found two levels up, where it commands the entirety of the upper deck with a variety of spaces including offices, a beauty room and a huge lounge which leads out to an intimate alfresco dining area and fire pit.

The layout of such a large charter yacht could have seemed overwhelming to many, but the easy flow crafted meticulously by Lürssen and the central spiral staircase that connects the decks together with a flanking elevator, make navigation through this realm easy and almost homelike.

Flying Fox is available for charter exclusively through Bluewater at a charter fee of €4,000,000 per week.  FLYING FOX is not available to USA citizens, residents and cannot be booked via USA brokers. For more information please contact:

gray fox yacht

Only delivered to its owner in the Spring of 2019, FLYING FOX is an enticing opportunity for those seeking not only the very best in yachting style and luxury but also the cache of being one of the first people to experience this 136m (446ft) motor yacht .

The 16th longest superyacht in the world, FLYING FOX enjoys 9,100GT of interior volume, making her one of the largest superyachts afloat and a charter yacht of near incomparable luxury and space. Her superb pedigree fuses the large yacht dream team of German mega yacht builder Lurssen with renowned designer Espen Oino , delivering a remarkable design that flows across her five exterior decks.

FLYING FOX’s sculpted superstructure and decks deliver more than just aesthetic pleasure, creating numerous terraces, balconies and viewing areas from which guests can enjoy the seascape. A huge and quite unique 12-meter swimming pool is perhaps the stand-out deck feature, though, running across the yacht’s vast beam.

Able to accommodate up to 22 guests, rather than the more usual 12, FLYING FOX's guests will be served by a crew of 54, a luxurious ratio of more than 2:1 that is sure to deliver the most incredible charter yacht holiday.

The interior design is the work of Mark Berryman, the British designer creating lavish but also balanced accommodation that is perfect for charter. An entire private master suite on the upper deck is joined by 10 class-leading guest suites, each with its own private terrace, a truly wonderful and rare feature.

Located high on the bridge deck, large and beautifully finished living areas run across two floors, offering incredible views for the two salons and dining areas.

gray fox yacht

A 400 square-metre two-floor spa is another stand-out feature, with hammam, sauna, massage area, gym and cryo sauna. A lower deck spa area is also included, connecting to the beach club with its dive centre and direct to the sea.

Other notable features include a full cinema, twin heli-pads, custom-built tenders including a 12.5m enclosed Limo tender, and a beach landing craft. Finished in a  dove grey hull, this is not only one of the most desirable charter yachts in the world but perhaps also the most impressive.

My life in boats: Travis Fox, owner of 27m superyacht Skyline

As he looks forward to his 25th wedding anniversary, superyacht owner Travis Fox tells Grace Trofa how boating has influenced his family...

I was in my early 40s when I bought my first boat. We lived in Virginia. Year after year the winters would hit and we would ask each other, “Why are we living here?” We telecommute our businesses; we could live anywhere. We wanted to stay in the US but be somewhat disconnected. Sanibel, Florida, was a real easy choice. We had a yacht in mind when we chose a house on a deep-water canal with a large dock. Our first boat was an Azimut Magellano.

We are a very adventurous family, travelling all the time, but four people and five dogs on a 15 metre boat for five-month trips got a little worn out. We needed the ability to be together but also have our own privacy.

Both our boats are Cor D Rover designs; we love his work. We talked to 18 different manufacturers but when I walked into the Horizon booth at the 2016 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show , I pointed to the model of the FD line and said, “This is my next boat.” Working with Cor [on Skyline , a Horizon FD 87] was a real treat and we have become great friends.

The bow seating is our favourite place on board; we sit and play dominos until 2am and gather there at sunsets. My personal favourite spot is the “man penthouse” [the sky lounge]: 500 square feet of walnut and leather. It was designed with business meetings in mind and when I invite clients on board we get full attendance every time.

The Exumas has to be our favourite spot. We stayed for two weeks at Hawksbill Cay; it was like camping on the water and we never saw another human. We have made the best friends ever during our trips – the farther we roamed from civilisation, the nicer the people.

This summer we will be heading up the East Coast, stopping in major cities, as we are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and my wife has never been to New York.

Our daughters, Kilyn and Taylor, were preteens when we started boating, lacking the confidence that comes with real-world experience and overcoming challenges. Boating has driven a huge change in them. My eldest, who’s 17, took the wheel, hailed people on the radio and drove the boat through the crowded harbour in Taiwan. She docks the boat, runs the deck and now I take orders from her.
