I've had my boat in this marina for three years, it is clean, well kept, secure and extremely convenient; you are literally a few minutes from open ocean, restaurants, LAX, Redondo Beach pier and a host of other amenities. The office staff I've dealt with; Maureen and Sharon are friendly, professional and helpful. The jack of all trades, who's name I never got unfortunately, is constantly walking the docks, tidying up tripping hazards and looking out for everyone's boats. During a particularly windy storm (55 knot winds) a few boats had their jibs come unfurled, four of us wrestled with the sails of some of the absent owner's boats and mitigated the damage. It was good to see the marina staff and boaters come together when needed. I've left the marina headed out cruising, but highly recommend Port Royal Marina (and the other CYM marinas I've been to). The only reason I gave four stars out of five is the recent addition of the Shade restaurant nearby. It is a loud and obnoxious blight on the previously quiet waterfront. Try to find a slip as far away as possible, several members have moved their boats to other slips for this very reason. It's unfortunate and not the marinas fault, but I thought I should make mention, as it definitely is an issue.

Photo of Cindy G.

HORRIBLE customer service. They don't seem to want anyone's business. They make you jump through a ton of hoops just to apply for a slip.

This review is written from the perspective of looking at a map of SoCal and trying to choose a marina/harbor (and waiting lists therein) for the parking of yer boat or yacht. Waiting lists are not 100% necessary for all slip sizes, but they can still extend into the 5-year-to-never range surprisingly easily for larger sizes and particular marinas. Consider on paper the following options in/near Santa Monica Bay: Marina del Rey King Harbor San Pedro I'll stop there - sorry Oceanside, Channel Islands/Oxnard, and Ventura Harbors, not to mention Long Beach and Alamitos Bay. Different reviews and focii those will be and have. Here's the deal: ***Non-cruising time (time not actually spent outside the harbor): It can take a good half-hour to get out of Marina del Rey (once you're out of your fairway) past the breakwater. From King Harbor, it's about 5 minutes - 10, maybe, depending upon from which basin you emerge. San Pedro has some flexibility, but that brings me to the next point... ***Traffic: Nothing against San Pedro - but it is adjacent to one of the largest commercial shipping ports (combined ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach) in the world. You may have noticed that container ships tend to take a somewhat more liberal interpretation than might you or I with regard to the exact boundaries of a marked channel. In the fog. Just saying. Marina del Rey: This marina complex is so large that it is visible from space. I believe it remains the largest man-made marina complex (I hesitate to call it a harbor) since inception about 50 years ago. There's a little traffic there. Not big block-out-the-sky traffic like Pedro or other port entry points, but traffic nonetheless. King Harbor: Virtually zero traffic by comparison. ***Catalina Island: Why are you thinking of parking a boat or yacht in the area if you aren't planning to become one with the Island? San Pedro is closest. King Harbor next, and Marina del Rey furthest away of the three. Not a huge deal if you have twin 400HP engines and no aversion to a bumpy ride, but for the sailors and slowboaters among us, adding an hour or two each way is a consideration. ***Panache: No doubt here - Marina del Rey is a spiffy place for the most part, and that Burton Chace Park, too. However, you'll pay for it in most cases. That's paying more to be further away from the breakwater and further away from Catalina. Just saying. You may not care. It's very cool to be that close to Santa Monica, Venice, and for that matter, the other side of LAX. Since for some sad reason there are no marinas north of MdR (ok, there are moorings at Paradise Cove), if you decide to live in Malibu, MdR is your closest option. It's a nice drive up the coast to Oxnard, but outside the scope of this review. King Harbor is a jewel of a location. Also man-made and about the same vintage as MdR, there's a lot of history, and a first class yacht club (KHYC). With that said, there are efforts underway to update the adjacent Pier infrastructure and other shoreside facilities (gone will be the long-vacant Red Onion shortly to make way for another Shade Hotel, due 2014). The good news is that's just great. The other news is that these are necessary steps to make the most of what should be a jewel of a location; yep - it's a tad... underused now. San Pedro: If you like maritime history and soon, tours of one of the most historic battleships ever constructed on the planet, this is the place for you. With that said, San Pedro is adjacent to some very polluted areas. This is supposed to get better over time, and needs to. Meanwhile, 3000x federal limit numbers are not encouraging. Some areas are not fit for human habitation. This is a shame, since recreational boating in SoCal started in what is now LA Harbor. There are 3800 recreational slips there still, give or take. ***Net net: King Harbor has the location and the quietness that many people want. In the end, if you need a slip in SoCal, often there's not a lot of choice - the reality is that you get on 20 waiting lists and play the game. Definitely consider King Harbor from the standpoints of location, quietness, and existing services. ***Bonus to the reader for having read this far: There is one unique relationship in King Harbor not found anywhere else on the West Coast. Gain admittance to the King Harbor Yacht Club, and you gain access to their slip waiting list. KHYC members have first priority at King Harbor Marina. Absent that, Joe off the street who joins the KHM waiting list gets to pay $100/year and wait perhaps 10 years. *Furthermore*, KHYC members who are slipholders in KHM have the option of paying the year's slip fees in advance, in exchange for a 10% discount. That 10% discount, coincidentally, can equal, more or less, the year's dues at KHYC. An excellent arrangement any way you slice it - especially as the larger slips can and do command $1000/month rent.

In my forty years of boating in Southern California, I can say without a doubt that Port Royal Marina's staff (included, but not limited to: Darcy and Cameron) continue to go above and beyond to reach my family's needs. It is our home away from home. I highly recommend this marina and the incredible staff!

Good times with good friends are always had here! Thanks to M "n M, Tootie and Preacher for including us all the time!

I contacted club for membership information. They promptly returned my call. Very friendly and welcoming club. We are still checking out others but will definetly be stopping back here to visit them in person. In driving by, it looks like a nice and simple clubhouse.

OMG.Talk about taking the fun out of boating. This Marina company, situated beside King Harbor Marina, who also own 2-3 other Marinas, is apparently notorious for up charging, charging security deposits, changing agreements and therefore hassling good tenants. And sadly after many months I suffered the same. What is this..bait and switch?I already signed the contract then they suddenly changed the amounts due !!!!!!! Had I know the amount would be different I would not have signed. THEN On ONE day I received two differing letters from Darcy the Office Assistant suddenly upcharging my security deposit in spite of being on good standing the entire time I was there over 8 months. It is still not resolved . A total insult to good tenants,or indeed any tenant , totally unethical and totally arbitrary. I understanding charging extra for an extra foot of boat( but really $100 for one extra foot?) but changing and upcharging secuirty deposits..doing it after the contracts are signed and after 8 months of on time payments and in, as the office admits, good standing. ? . Which begs the question is it discriminatory, is it political? What is it. .It IS called treating people badly. I am a qualified working professional in good standing. This Marina has little regard for its tenants.Everyone slip renter is just a dollar sign to be upcharged in whatever way they can get away with.Something not right with Cathy or someone at the head corporate office here.Appalled.

Me and family decided to take a walk over to king harbor from the redondo pier. All of the resteraunts that you dress up for are located out this way. Except for Pollys on the pier . I would actually like to try that. But anyway not too much to do here unless I missed something. I believe you can sail and sport fish. That's all I have for this section of the harbor.

The Mordovia Republic, Russia

The capital city of Mordovia republic: Saransk .

The Mordovia Republic - Overview

The Republic of Mordovia is a federal subject of Russia located in the center of the European part of the country, in the Volga Federal District. Saransk is the capital city of the region.

The population of the Mordovia Republic is about 770,700 (2022), the area - 26,128 sq. km.

Mordovia republic map, russia, history of mordovia.

In the 11th - early 13th centuries, the military-political situation in the western part of the mid-Volga was characterized by the struggle of the Russian principalities and the Volga Bulgaria. Both sides wanted to subdue the Mordovian lands. In 1221, the town of Nizhny Novgorod was founded at the place where the Oka River flows into the Volga.

Nizhny Novgorod became an important center in the fight against the Volga Bulgaria, the Mordovian lands around the town came under the control of Russians. However, further development of the region was interrupted due to the Mongol invasion. The Mordovians were subdued in 1242.

In the middle of the 15th century, the Golden Horde collapsed and part of the land populated by the Mordovians came under the control of the newly formed Kazan Khanate. Other part of the Mordovian lands was ruled by the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Relations between the Russian state and the Kazan Khanate were strained. At the same time, the Crimean khans constantly raided the Russian state from the south.

More Historical Facts…

In an effort to strengthen its eastern borders the Russian state entered into a confrontation against the Kazan Khanate. In 1551, the peoples living on the right bank of the Volga swore allegiance to the Russian tsar and their lands became part of the Russian state. In 1552, Tsar Ivan IV conquered Kazan and the Kazan Khanate ceased to exist. According to the chronicles, about 10,000 of the Mordovians took part in this military campaign.

In the second half of the 18th - the early 19th centuries, Orthodox Christianity became the main religion of the Mordovians. At the end of the 19th century, the industry began to develop rapidly in the Russian Empire. But Mordovia remained a typical agricultural region. The Mordovians didn’t have their statehood until the 20th century.

In 1930, Mordovian Autonomous Oblast was formed. In 1934, it became the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. At the end of the 1920s - early 1930s, forced labor of prisoners was used extensively in Mordovia economy. At that time, there were 12 forced labor camps in the USSR and 2 of them were located in Mordovia. The prisoners were mostly engaged in work in the logging, sawmills and the construction of railroads.

By the early 1940s, Mordovia became an agricultural and industrial region. It was one of the main producers of ropes in the Volga region. Textile, food processing, timber cutting, and wood working industries were developing rapidly.

During the Second World War, 17 enterprises from Ukraine, Belarus, Bryansk, Kursk, Orel oblasts, and other regions of the USSR were evacuated in Mordovia. This was the basis for post-war development of the local industry. About 240 thousand people were drafted into the Soviet army, 131,000 of them were killed or gone missing.

On December 25, 1993, the region received its present name - the Republic of Mordovia. In the first half of the 1990s, in connection with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the transition to a market economy, the level of socio-economic development of the republic significantly decreased. In the second half of the 1990s, the situation stabilized.

In August 2012, Mordovia celebrated the millennium of unity of the Mordovian and Russian peoples.

Republic of Mordovia

Although the Republic of Mordovia is located in Russia’s Volga Federal Region, the River Volga does not actually flow through the republic.  It is situated between the Nizhny Novgorod, Ulyanovsk, Penza and Ryazan Regions and the Republic of Chuvashia.  Around 30% of the republic’s population is Mordvins - a Finno-Ugric ethnic people.  The Mordvins are further separated into two separate ethnic groups the Erzya and the Moksha.  The Mordvins are especially famous for their red and white traditional dress.

Mordovia

The capital of the republic is the city of Saransk which was selected as one of the venues of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.  The city also boasts the largest collection of the work of sculptor Stepan Erzya - himself an Erzya Mordvin.  Saransk was also the first city which the French actor Gérard Depardieu visited upon being personally granted Russian citizenship by President Vladimir Putin.  He has since been officially registered as a resident there.

The Top Attractions in Saransk, Russia

Cathedral of Fyodor Ushakov, Saransk

Saransk is a small city some 650 kilometers southeast of Moscow . Even though at the first glance it might seem rather unremarkable, it is, in fact, a very interesting place to visit. Saransk, the capital of the Republic of Mordovia and home to only about 300,000 people, has also become the place of residence of one of Russia’ s most famous new citizens, Gérard Depardieu. Here are the most remarkable of the city’s many attractions.

Mordovian erzia museum of visual arts, museum of mordovia folk culture.

Initially opened as a branch of the Museum of Visual Arts, this museum is entirely dedicated to the folk culture of the indigenous peoples of the region. Opened only in 1999, it has since played a major role in establishing the national identity among the region’s youth. The exhibition, consisting of artefacts presenting every aspect of indigenous Mordovian life, is housed in a very beautiful building that is a monument of late 19th-century architecture in itself.

Museum of War and Work Efforts

A fairly new and very unusual museum, it is dedicated to the soldiers from the region who fought and died in the armed conflicts in which Russia was involved in the 20th century: the Great Patriotic War (a term used in Russia to denote a portion of the Second World War, from 1941 to 1945), the Afghan War, and the Chechen Wars. What makes the museum so unusual is the building in which it is located. The building’s shape resembles the borders of the Republic of Mordovia, and its roof is meant to look like a kokoshnik – a traditional local female hat. The orange and black façade is reminiscent of the ribbon of St.George, a Russian symbol of military courage.

Pushkin’s Park

Ever since the Scorpions felt the famous wind of change, it is not a secret that Russians are fond of parks. Saransk is no exception: the whole city is very green and patched with smaller and bigger rest areas. Pushkin’s Park, however, is the most remarkable of them. It is a perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon, have a small sweet treat, and watch local families walking around, playing with their children, and hanging out together.

Cathedral of St. Fyodor Ushakov

The early 21st century saw a revival of Orthodox Christianity in Russia. In 2001, Mordovia became a separate diocese. The existing churches turned out to be too small to meet the increasing needs, and a new church, the Cathedral of St. Fyodor Ushakov was built. The construction was completed in 2006, and the funds were collected from local private sponsors. The Church, the design of which was inspired by the French empire, can fit up to 3,000 people. It is an excellent representation of everything that modern Russian Orthodoxy seems to be.
