rya powerboat level 2 advanced

This course is for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips and night time journeys.

It includes navigation by day and night, weather and other aspects of skippering a 'planing' powerboat on more challenging passages in coastal waters. Anybody undertaking this course must have the practical skills of the Intermediate course and knowledge of navigation to level of Yachtmaster shorebased course.

Students taking the Advanced course must hold a VHF/SRC operators certificate and a first aid certificate. All candidates are required to hold a first aid certificate. Acceptable certificates include the RYA's First Aid Certificate, First Aid at Work, First Aid at Sea or any other certificate issued on completion of a course which is a minimum of one day's duration, recognised by the Health and Safety Executive and includes the treatment of hypothermia, cold shock and drowning.

The course is to be undertaken in a 'fast' planing boat and if run in our own ribs we will normally give the opportunity of experiencing both the outboard and inboard engined ribs. Particular emphasis is given to operating any craft safely with a good knowledge and understanding of all IRPCS, understanding the lights on ships, buoys, etc. using appropriate channels on the VHF to understand vessel movements, undertaking a navigational exercise by both day and night using the electronic navigational aids provided on our ribs and conventional charts. Upon completion of the course a student will have the knowledge necessary to visit both known and unknown ports by both day and night understanding their capabilities of skippering a powerboat in different sea conditions and be confident of making decisions should a problem arise and deal with them appropriately and safely.

Upon the satisfactory completion of the Advanced course and with experience and hour building will give students the opportunity of taking the Advanced exam.

Assumed knowledge: Candidates should be competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with navigation and chartwork to the level of Yachtmaster Shorebased certificate.
Minimum duration: 2 days including a night navigation exercise.
Minimum age: 17.
Course content:

Preparation for sea, boat handling, passage making and responsibility as skipper, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, use of engines, emergency situations, night cruising both out on the Solent and entering a less familiar ports.

Ability after the course: Able to plan and execute coastal trips both at day and night.

Course instructor and participants looking at 2 powerboats

RYA Powerboat Level 2

This 2 day course is the benchmark for powerboating qualifications across the world. No existing skills are needed. This course will help you become a fully self sufficient powerboater.

About the course

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) National Powerboat Scheme is for drivers of craft up to 33ft (10 metres), without a galley or toilet on board. These qualifications are recognised around the world and can be beneficial if you’re looking to drive commercially.

You do not need any prior knowledge of boat handling to join this Level 2 course. Our instructors will introduce you to a range of slow and fast manoeuvres and help you to get comfortable with how the craft handles.

After completing this course, you’ll be a self-sufficient powerboater. You’ll be comfortable reading the conditions, and handling the craft within its limitations and your own. You’ll also be able to apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) , allowing you to operate boats and pleasure craft abroad.

Powerboat Level 2 courses run on a maximum ratio of 1 instructor to 3 students.

What to bring with you

  • warm clothing
  • comfortable closed toe shoes that can get wet or wellies if it’s predicted to rain
  • lunch and any snacks (the canteen is not open at weekends)
  • water bottle
  • sunscreen and sunglasses

What we provide

  • life jackets
  • waterproof jackets and trousers
  • certificates upon successful completion

Introduction

Powerboat level 2 is the equivalent to your driving licence but on the water. It is the minimum requirement needed should you choose to hire a boat or participate as a powerboat driver whilst diving, water skiing etc. No previous boating experience is required to join this course.

This is a two day intense and exciting course, where you will be taught to handle boats at high speed and perform manoeuvres that could save lives and get you out of trouble. With a location like we have here in Cornwall, Falmouth and the surrounding areas offer not just stunning scenery but a variety of excellent locations to refine your navigation skills on the water and even the opportunity to steer your way to a Cornish pasty.

As with all our courses you will come away with a far greater knowledge of safe boat driving and a huge grin on your face.

  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence

In addition, the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean Certificates of Competence can receive the STCW endorsement .

Which certificate do I need?

The MCA's codes of practice categorise British flagged commercial yachts according to the type of yacht and the waters in which they operate. It is this categorisation that determines which of the above certificates you will need. See the MCA's table of manning requirements.

The RYA is a certifying authority for the codes of practice and can give advice on the coding and categorisation of commercial yachts.

How do I apply for a standard commercial endorsement?

Send the following items to RYA Certification, RYA House, Ensign Way, Hamble, Hampshire SO31 4YA:

  • Your original certificate - see list above
  • Your Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate
  • A commercial endorsement application form
  • Your original, completed ML5 Medical Report form or ENG1 medical fitness form a photocopy of your ML5 if version MSF 4112 REV 02/23 or ENG1 Medical will be accepted*
  • A copy of your RYA Basic Sea Survival certificate or STCW Personal Survival Techniques
  • A copy of your RYA Marine Radio SRC Certificate or other acceptable GMDSS Marine Radio Operator's Certificate.
  • A passport sized photo with your name on the back
  • The application fee.

*We can only accept the latest version of the ML5 form (currently MSF 4112 / Rev 02/23). Skippers working in category 1 or 0 waters will need the ENG1 medical. A list of approved doctors can be found at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency .

Medical referrals

If your Doctor has entered any “Yes ticks” on your ML5 Medical Report form then your ML5 Medical will need to be referred onto the MCA to be reviewed and you will be required to complete Part D the Medical Review on page 12/16 of your ML5 Medical to provide the RYA with additional information to submit to the MCA. The MCA will not be able to give a decision on the issue of your Commercial endorsement if this section is not completed in full. The MCA will not accept any ML5 Medicals which are more than one year old.

If you are issued with a restricted ENG1 or ML5 Certificate of Medical Fitness, then your RYA Commercial endorsement will also be issued with restrictions. If you are considering a seagoing career the RYA and Maritime and Coastguard Agency strongly advise that you undergo a medical or sight test, which includes testing of colour and visual acuity, before starting training.

Restrictions on a ENG1 certificate will prevent you gaining STCW qualifications for vessels greater than 24m in length.

Professional Practices and Responsibilities course

Since April 2012 it has been a requirement for commercial endorsement holders to take the online Professional Practices and Responsibilities course (PPR).

All new applicants for the endorsement must take the course prior to submitting their application.

Existing commercial endorsement holders who gained their endorsement prior to April 2012 will be required to take the course prior to their next revalidation.

Find out more about PPR .

Re-validating your commercial endorsement

All commercial endorsements must be revalidated every five years by proving at least 150 days of actual sea service on appropriate vessels during the previous five years and be in possession of a valid medical fitness certificate.

If you are unable to prove the requisite sea service but are able to demonstrate that during at least half of the five-year period you have been employed on duties closely associated with the management and operation of one or more of the appropriate types of vessels, you may have your certificate considered for revalidation.

Validity of Commercial endorsements will be from date of processing for a maximum of 5 years.
