Guide to sailing in ibiza.
An Ibiza Town yacht charter is the perfect way to explore the Balearic island archipelago. Whether on a large luxury yacht motor boat or humble monohull sailing yacht, an Ibiza boat charter will allow you to take in the sights and sounds of Ibiza Town itself but also a chance to explore the not so touristy areas of this jewel of the Mediterranean Sea.
Ibiza Town has had two awakenings in recent times. In the 1960s it became a favourite bolthole for the hippy community thanks to its laid back vibe. Linked to the first Summer of Love, it's perhaps unsurprising that the Second Summer of Love in 1989 made the town a Mecca for the clubbing and rave scene.
Both Ibiza Town and nearby San Antonio are important world centres for rave and dance music. Extremely LGBTQ friendly, both towns wave the rainbow flag with pride.
It may surprise you but the nightlife though loud and important to the town, is not the main reason people visit IbizaTown. The hippies still run the place, cheek by jowl with the local Ibizans who enjoy the alternative culture. An Ibizaboat charter is more about white sand pristine beaches, secluded coves and a relaxed pace of life.
Even though the town itself has four marinas with hundreds of berths, an Ibiza Town yacht charter is about exploring the world outside - if the town itself was all you were interested in, there are plenty of hotels to stay in!
Santa Eulalia is a more typical Balearic island town. It is a holiday resort, but more family oriented than the rave capitals on the island. Like Ibiza Town it has a decent sized marina and you may find it a quieter place as a sailingholiday destination. Es Cana is another laid back town, though with a very hippy culture vibe. Its beaches are at least as good ast Ibiza Town too!
As well as enjoying the pristine beaches and secluded coves of Ibiza, an Ibiza Town yacht charter can take you islandhopping. Whether on a bareboat charter or crewed luxury yacht charter, on a monohull sailing yacht, catamaran or superyacht , you can explore the islands of the Balearics beyond.
Just a few miles off the coast of Ibiza is the desert island of Formentera. A very relaxed vibe indeed here, and perhaps worth a day trip to get used to sailing between islands.
The next island to the east is the biggest in the Balearics, Mallorca. Majorca has been a tourist island since the 1960s and has a bit of a reputation. That is changing very much for the better, with islanders exploiting its natural beauty. Hiking is a growing tourist activity there as people flock to see the flora and fauna that in many cases are unique to Mallorca.
The furthest island to the east is Menorca. Populated for close to 1,700 years, it has relics of different empires from Greece to Rome and yes, the British who ran a Royal Navy base from the capital Mahon for 70 years or so.
A charter yacht holiday out of Ibiza Town can take you to all four islands, or you can take a day charter out of the town and just get a taste of the beautiful coastline just outside!
Ibiza Airport
An important tourist airport, it has more than a million passengers passing through it from Europe and beyond every year.
For a fare of around €3.50 a head you can take a bus to Ibiza Town and walk to the marina from there. A taxi could cost €35 but will deliver you right to the gate.
There are five major marinas (400+ berths) on Ibiza, one boutique marina that serves large super yacht and luxury yacht charter , and several smaller marinas you can moor at overnight. The major marinas have yacht charter companies offering super yacht luxury yacht charter, catamaran, motor yacht, monohull sailing boat and speed boat rental as a day charter or longer on a bareboat or crewed yacht charter basis.

Over a seven day Ibiza boat hire you can stay close to Ibiza and head for nearby Formentera as part of the sailing holiday. On a 14 day boat trip you can explore the Balearics a little more with a run to Mallorca.
7 days - Ibiza Island circuit south and west about: After a leisurely breakfast on your first day you'll be headed off Ibiza to the privately owned island of Espalmador, a yachties' retreat where you can have a mud bath and relax on the white sand beach. The next night you will be on nearby Formentera, a more touristy but fun desert island. From here you will go to the uninhabited island of Esvedra off the SE tip of Ibiza, and enjoy the solitude and quiet ashore. Compensating for the quiet of the evening before you will head for the party town of San Antonio perhaps taking in a beach or quiet cove at lunchtime on your trip. Cala Xaraca with its 90 metre long beach will be your next evening ashore - bring your camera as it is very beautiful! Santa Eulalia is a family holiday town and a gentle return to reality before your final night back in Ibiza Town.
14 days - Circumnavigating Ibiza and Mallorca: Again heading out of the family resort of Santa Eulalia you will firstly head south and around Formentera, perhaps staying the night at Cala Saona and on Cala Porroig on Ibiza before heading up the west coast and across to Palma in Mallorca. You would then explore the largest island in the chain heading clockwise, with the choice of lagoons and anchorages - the Mondrago National Park is good for walking or some of the tourist resorts like Alcudia and its 14km long beach where you can be certain of peace and quiet with a sharp eye and a willingness to sail on a bit. After that you cross the sea back to Ibiza and Santa Eulalia.
The sailing season in the Balearic Islands is best from May to October. The major party towns heat up to full frenzy in June to August, and so do the prices. It is very much down to what you want from a sailing holiday in Ibiza - if partying all night is on the cards, the top DJs will hit the island in that time and you will have quite a memorable time. If the quiet life is what you seek, then do try to get out during term time - the sea is still warm in September and October, though the infamous Tramontana starts to be more frequent at this time of year, as it eases off in early May.
Ibiza and Formentera are affected by SE breezes most of the year that do not really go above 15 knots. As such this makes for near perfect sailing conditions. You will see more precipitation towards the beginning and end of the sailing season (May and October) but the temperatures rarely stray below 15-17 degrees during those times. In the height of summer (July/August) it isn't as hot as mainland Spain, though you will see the odd few days in the 30+ C range. For Northern Europeans and those from other cooler climates this makes for fantastic sailing!
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
There are five main marinas for smaller yachts - Marina Ibiza North, Marina Ibiza South, and Marina Botafoc are in Ibiza Town alongside the boutique marina, Marina Magna that can handle the largest superyacht in the world.
Why do you want to go to Ibiza? If partying is your thing, then go at the peak of the season in June-August. If however a quiet sail and secluded bays is more your bag, try September when the schools go back.
You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.
You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.
If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skipper on board your charter boat you typically don't require licences.

To rent a boat in Ibiza is a unique and unforgettable experience. Enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean around the coast of Ibiza and Formentera from the comfort of your charter boat and experience some of the hard to reach beaches that the white island has to offer or simply cruise along the coast to get a different perspective of the island. All boats and yachts have qualified skippers, with local knowledge to take you to the kind of places that you want to go to. We can also organise just about anything you require to ensure you have the most wonderful experience including restaurant reservations, specialist onboard drinks, watersports packages and so much more.
A charter to Formentera is the stuff that dreams are made of. Just off the coast of Ibiza, Formentera is the smallest and most southerly of the Balearic Islands measuring around 20 km long and about 2 km wide. The beaches have some of the whitest sand that you can find in the Mediterranean and the sea is clear and a beautiful shade of turquoise. There’s a reason that it is often compared to islands in the Caribbean. There isn’t an airport, which helps to make the island even more exclusive, as you can only get there by boat. You can get to Formentera by boat in less than an hour from Ibiza Town and in only a few hours from San Antonio. Our charter Formentera package lets you sample some of its beautiful beaches, swim to some of its tranquil caves or dine in some of its renowned beach restaurants. The beach of Illetes was voted number 13 in the top 25 beaches in the world in Trip Advisor’s 2019 Travellers’ Choice, and when you see it, you’ll know why. You can also visit the nearby private and uninhabited island of Espalmador, which is also only accessible by boat.
Hiring a motorboat in Ibiza is a great way to explore the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, the beaches and its coves. A motorboat will get you where you want to go much faster and you can nip in and out of different beaches and discover more places in a short period of time. They are generally well equipped and excellent for those who want to see and be seen. You can also experience the thrill and shear adrenalin as the boat speeds full throttle across the sea.
Motorboat hire Ibiza offers more flexibility when you book a motorboat versus a sailboat or catamaran, as motorboats are usually available for shorter periods of time and come with a range of optional extras. Most motorboats are available for charter with a skipper but they can also be chartered with a hostess or if you prefer you can bareboat charter. Drinks (beer, wine, champagne, soft drinks etc.) and catering can also be provided. We offer a select portfolio of motorboats at Yacht Charters Ibiza, available for charter by the day or longer to meet your needs.
Yacht Charters Ibiza has a hand-picked selection of superyachts for charter in Ibiza, available by the day, multi-day or week. We also work closely with our partners and collaborators so that we can source specific requests for superyachts that are available in the Balearics. Most of the superyachts in Ibiza that are available for charter, are powered by a motor. There are some superyachts that have sails, but they are usually booked out weekly, they are harder to get for a day charter.

‘We booked a day charter for our yoga retreat clients. Starting in San Antonio, we cruised down the coast, seeing dolphin and passing some of the most gorgeous beaches, before stopping at Atlantis to explore. We went on to Formentera, enjoying a sushi lunch and cava on board. At Illettes we snorkeled from the boat through the crystal-clear waters, heading back in time to catch the sunset from outside Café del Mar. Thank you for excellent advice and the most unforgettable day.’
Sally, Yoga Retreats
‘My girlfriends and I booked a motorboat with Yacht Charters Ibiza last year. We started off in Ibiza town and set off to Formentera, enjoying a glass of cava on the way. There was time to sunbathe on deck and swim before lunch – they had made a reservation for us at Juan y Andrea. We were picked up by the tender service and had the most wonderful seafood lunch, followed by more drinks and lounging back on the boat. A bucket list day with excellent service all round.’
Tiffany, Knightsbridge
‘We wanted a family holiday with a difference, so we booked a sailboat with crew for a week. We spent the week sailing around the coast of Ibiza and around Formentera, dropping anchor at a different place each night. The advice from Yacht Charters Ibiza and the local knowledge of the captain and crew ensured that we went to some really special places. From the best restaurants to the most perfect coves, both adults and kids agree it was the best holiday ever. Highly recommended!’

The peak season for charters is during the summer months from June to September, when the weather is warm and the waters are calm.
Despite that, this is also the busiest time, so early booking is advisable. The duration of your charter is another important aspect; short-term charters of a few days are ideal for quick getaways, whereas longer charters of a week or more allow for a more leisurely exploration.
Budget planning is crucial. Be sure to account for not only the cost of the yacht rental but also additional expenses such as fuel, crew tips, food, and activities.

When preparing for a yacht charter, it’s essential to understand the legal and safety requirements to ensure a smooth and compliant experience.
This includes gathering all necessary documentation and obtaining the appropriate licenses, which vary depending on the region and the type of vessel you plan to operate.
To charter a yacht in Ibiza, certain documentation and licenses are required. If you’re opting for a bareboat charter, you must have a valid skipper’s license that is recognized in Spain.
You may need a VHF radio license. For crewed charters, the responsibility for licenses typically falls on the hired crew, but it’s essential to carry your personal identification documents such as a passport or ID card.
Safety is paramount when chartering a yacht. Ensure that the yacht is equipped with necessary safety gear, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.
Familiarize yourself with the yacht’s safety procedures and emergency protocols. It’s also advisable to check the weather forecast regularly and avoid sailing in unfavorable conditions.
For added safety, always inform someone onshore about your sailing plans and expected return time.
The cost of yacht chartering in Ibiza varies based on several factors, including the type of yacht, the season, and the duration of the charter. On average, you can expect to pay:

These prices typically include the yacht rental, but additional costs may apply for fuel, crew, food and beverages, mooring fees, and activities.
When budgeting and managing expenses for a yacht charter, planning ahead is crucial, as early booking can often secure better rates and availability.
Opting for all-inclusive packages can also be beneficial, as they cover most expenses and provide a clearer understanding of the total cost.
If traveling with a group, sharing the costs can make the charter more affordable. It’s important to monitor expenses during the charter to avoid unexpected costs.
Snorkeling and diving are among the top activities, allowing you to explore the vibrant marine life and underwater landscapes around the island.
The clear, warm waters of Ibiza provide perfect conditions for these activities, with spots like Cala Xarraca and Cala d’Hort being particularly popular.
Beach hopping is another favorite pastime. With numerous stunning beaches and secluded coves, you can anchor your yacht and enjoy pristine sands and crystal-clear waters. Cala Bassa, Playa de Ses Illetes in Formentera, and Cala Comte are must-visit spots for beach lovers.
Sunset cruises are a magical way to end your day, providing breathtaking views as the sun sets over the horizon. The western coast of Ibiza, particularly around San Antonio, is known for its stunning sunsets.
Hosting private parties on your yacht is another exclusive experience. With Ibiza’s reputation as a party island, you can enjoy a personalized celebration with friends and family on the water, complete with music, food, and drinks.
Many yacht charter companies can help arrange catering and entertainment to ensure your party is a memorable one.

150 yachts and boats are currently available to sail around Ibiza and Formentera through the new and already successful worldwide platform for yacht charters: YACHTICO.com . There, you can search for and book yacht charters for all around the world. From Ibiza, weekly prices range from 1200 euros for a compact, simple boat to 24,000 euros for a luxurious motor yacht. The most common model years for the boats in Ibiza are 2005 to 2012. A popular roundtrip leads via the capital city Eivissa to Cala Llonga, Santa Eulària des Riu, Cala Boix, Ses Caletes, Port de San Miguel, Cala Gracio, Sant Antoni, Sa Conillera, Porroig, and Playa d’en Bossa.
A great place to take advantage of the coves and tucked away bays on Ibiza is in the south at the Cala Porroig. With its 12-meter-deep and crystal clear waters, it is a great place to combine a sailing rest with a snorkeling adventure. Cala Vadella in the southwest near Sant Josep de sa Talaia is also a beautiful place to stop. Here we have some sailing itinerary suggestions for Ibiza for you.
It has a dream setting with a 200 meter long and up to 75 meter wide sand beach, the alleged rocks from Atlantis Es Vedrà, diving schools, pedal boats, and jet ski rental on the nearby idyllic Cala Carbo Bay.
The eastern coast of Ibiza is not very recommendable for anchoring, but the small neighboring island Formentera, about 28 nautical miles from Ibiza, is a lovely place. Sailing there will bring you past the tiny Isla Conejera, which also has two beautiful spots to anchor at, and the Isla Espalmador has very secure berths in front of the sandy beach Platja de s’Alga in the south. Around the remaining and sometimes uninhabited islands in the area, such as Es Vedranell, Sa Galera and Tagomago, a skipper on his sailboat can sometimes feel like a buccaneer from bygone days.

Ibiza is perhaps best known for its party scene and for having the best nightclubs and DJs in Europe, but it’s also a small island in the middle of the world’s best sailing area (the Mediterranean), and, away from the crowds of partygoers, there’s plenty of natural beauty to find, quiet villages and scenic bays and beaches to explore. You can also island-hop to the idyllic white beaches and wilderness of nearby Formentera.
The Balearic Islands are blessed with reliable winds and sunshine for the duration of the sailing season - which runs from March to November – which makes for some exceptional sailing conditions. SAILING RATING: Beginner - almost all of the Mediterranean is suitable for beginners, due to simple line-of-sight navigation, winds that are reliable and not too strong, and because water levels are largely non-tidal. All the above is absolutely true for sailing around Ibiza. Being comfortable at anchor will allow you more places to stop, but it is not essential.
MUST-SEE: Check out our full suggested itinerary below. We'd highly recommend taking in the incredible beaches on Formentera , the lively Ibiza Town , and getting something tasty to eat in Eularia .
WHAT WE CAN OFFER: We have a great range of yachts and catamarans available for charter from our trusted Charter Partners, all available bareboat or Skippered. We can also arrange a Hostess, Personal Chef and other crew.
GETTING THERE: Our base in Sant Antoni is about a 30 minute drive from Ibiza airport. We can help arrange private transfers.
WHY BOOK WITH US? We only work with the very best professional charter operators , who we have met, know, and trust to give you the same outstanding customer service as you'll get from PlainSailing.com.

Suggested sailing itinerary, wind & weather conditions, marina details, more: sample prices - ibiza sailing itinerary - wind & weather - marina details, sample prices in, 6-day sailing itinerary from ibiza.
Whilst it’s technically possible to sail to Mallorca or the Spanish mainland from Ibiza, they’re both a bit of a slog away, and there are plenty of great places to discover closer to home, so they’re not worth the effort. The whole coastline of Ibiza is only 60 nM, and there is plenty enough places to explore.
The itinerary only covers six days because it’s likely you won’t sail on the day you arrive (you’ll normally only get on board in the late afternoon, and will need some time to get provisions on board and get familiar with the boat. And the boat needs to be returned to Sant Antoni on Friday evening (but you stay on-board overnight and check-out and disembark on Saturday morning). That means you’ll get six days of sailing in the sun, from Sunday to Friday.
The winds around Ibiza tend to come either from the north or the South-west, so you’ll be running with or reaching across the wind depending upon which direction is dominant today. Ibiza is probably remote and relaxing compared to where you live and work, but we’re heading even more remote and sailing to Savina, on the north coast of Formentera for the night.
Formentera is virtually entirely white sandy beaches and turquoise seas, and we’ll explore that tomorrow. La Savina is an important town here, and the main port for the island – it used to be used for exporting salt, but is now mainly used for welcoming land-lubbing tourists from Ibiza. There’s plenty of bars and restaurants and an afternoon market to check out, or nearby Punta de Sa Pedrera has one of the best sunsets in the Mediterranean.
Today we’re circumnavigating the whole island, enjoying the miles and miles of white sandy beaches: sailing around here feels a lot like sailing in the Caribbean. And there is no better way to explore than on your own private boat – prepare yourself for some envious looks from the land-lubbers on the beaches when you rock up in your boat! Of particular note, Es Migjorn beach on the south is long and beautiful, there’s a chance of spotting celebrities in or around Es Pujols in the North-east (which is where you’ll also find all the fanciest hotels), and in 2016, the Ses Illetes beach, on the spur at the North of the island, was named the best beach in the world on TripAdvisor!
Our suggested itineraries try to finish up in a marina each night, but there aren’t that many marinas here, so we’re recommending you pick up a mooring buoy in S’Alga and enjoy the tranquillity here, assuming the weather allows – but you’ll need to make sure you have provisions on board as there isn’t a restaurant or bar here. You could also anchor somewhere on Formentera for the night, or return to La Savina.
Ibiza Town itself is a fascinating place to visit. The Carthaginians founded a town here around 635 BC and the island has been conquered plenty of times over the years (by Romans, Moors, Catalans, etc…). The giant walls of the old town – which, in its entirety is now a UNESCO world heritage site - are a direct result of having been attacked and sacked relentlessly by pirates through the ages.
The high point of the town, literally and metaphorically, is the fantastic cathedral at the top of the old town, which dates back to the 14th century, but there’s history and fine architecture throughout the town – each conquering army has made their mark, and added to the charm, so it’s a fine place to stroll around with an ice-cream. For those so inclined, the biggest and best nightclubs are called Pacha, Amnesia and Ushuaia, all within a short taxi-ride of the marina, but beware that entry is likely to set you back upwards of €60!
Once you’ve had your fill of this lively, VIP lifestyle, then we’re heading somewhere different up the coast – Eularia, or Santa Eularia des Rue to give it it’s full title, is a (much) quieter village which is best known for being the gastronomic and artistic centre of the island. While Ibiza Town has nightclubs and dancing, this place is more about family strolls along the waterside, paddling on the beach, and enjoying a nice meal in the sunshine, ideally with a brilliant view.
The local cuisine here is, obviously, very much seafood based. If you’re after trying some traditional Ibizan food, then you’ll probably want to try some ‘Zarzuela’, which is a kind of fish stew, followed by Greixonera pudding for dessert. You can drink Sangria during the meal, but you’ll need to order a shot of the local Hierbas Ibicenca (an aniseedy-type shot, using locally grown herbs – hence the name) as a traditional finale to the meal.
To get there, we’re sailing north-east and then following the rugged coast line around. You’ll sail past the island of Tagomago, which markets itself as Europe’s ‘most exclusive private island’ – there is just one villa on the island which is rented out to the super-rich, and the weekly rental includes a 108-foot superyacht to go and explore Formentera with.
There’s no marina here, but there are a small number of mooring buoys to hook up to, or you can anchor here (or in the bigger Cala Xarraca in the next bay along). It’s a fun place to explore, the water here is crystal clear, there is still a bit of a holiday atmosphere in the nightlife.
We’re completing our circumnavigation of Ibiza (and Formentera) by heading West along the coast and back to where it all began. On the way, Port de Sant Miquel has a very picturesque beach surrounded by pine-covered cliffs, and there’s a funky beach bar in Cala Salada, which is worth a stop if you make good time on your way to Sant Antoni.
And then it’s time to return the boat – be sure to refuel at the fuelling berth before returning the boat to around the same place in the marina as you found her last week. Make the lines good and then high-five the rest of the crew for a job well done. What a skipper! You can stay on-board overnight tonight, and you’ll check-out tomorrow morning. If you haven’t yet explored Sant Antoni then it’s a lively town which is perhaps best known for the amazing sunsets, as well as the Eden and Es Paradise night clubs and the Ibiza Rocks pool party.
Hopefully you’ve had a blissful week of sailing, sunbathing and exploring on these idyllic islands. If you’ve had a blast with this crew, then head to PlainSailing.com soon and check out where else you can go sailing! Have a safe trip home, and hopefully see you online soon :)
The Balearic islands are confusing for wind direction though, as prevailing winds can arrive from either the north, or from the south-west (or both) so you’ll find yourself tinkering with the sails.
Regardless of where they arrive, the winds here eventually end up rushing east across the Mediterranean to travers Italy, Greece and Turkey.
Winds tend to be stronger here in the spring or the autumn than in the hot summer months, and in winter then the wind speed and direction tends to be less predictable, so it’s important to check the forecast before setting sail.
Sant Antoni de Portmany is a quiet and beautiful part of Ibiza, away from the big crowds and nightclubs that the island is famous for. If you're looking for a place to spend a night or two before or after your charter then we recommend the Es Mitjorn hotel, located near to the marina.
The Es Nautic marina is a luxurious place to start or end your sailing adventure. It's a secure and well-sheltered marina with restaurants, bars and shops on-site or within very easy reach in the town of Sant Antoni de Portmany.

The Lukoil Nizhny Novgorod refinery that has been in operation since 1958 is currently one of the biggest refineries in Russia.
It is owned and operated by Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lukoil. With a refining capacity of 17 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), Nizhny Novgorod is also the biggest refinery of the Lukoil Group. It was acquired by the Lukoil Group in October 2001.
From point a to b.
The total petroleum products produced by the refinery stood at 15.199 million tonnes (Mt) in 2019, with petrol and diesel accounting for 4.07Mt and 3.86Mt respectively.
The refinery has a Nelson Index of 7.3, while the light products yield and the refining depth are 62.7% and 77.1% respectively.
The construction of a deep conversion complex is currently underway at the refinery site to further increase the production of light products.
The Nizhny Novgorod refinery is located at Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, in central Russia.
It receives feedstock from various sources, including West Siberia and Tatarstan, through the Almetyevsk-Nizhny Novgorod and the Surgut-Polotsk oil pipelines.
The refinery produces a range of products, including petrol, naphtha, diesel, jet fuel, fuel oil, bunker fuel, bitumen, and petrochemicals.
Lukoil started using Transneft’s petroleum product pipeline for the transport of petrol output of the refinery to Moscow in June 2017.
The various processing units in the refinery include a crude distillation facility of 337,100 barrels per day (bpd) capacity, a 178,000bpd vacuum distillation facility, an 80,000bpd catalytic cracking facility, a 47,100bpd catalytic reforming facility, a 223,800bpd catalytic hydrotreating facility, and a 19,200bpd demercaptanisation facility.
The production capacity of the alkylation facility is 17,000bpd, while that of the isomerisation facility is 10,300bpd. The refinery produces approximately 42 million cubic feet (Mcf) of hydrogen, 376 tonnes of sulphur, and 22,800 barrels of bitumen a day.
The refinery also started producing ECTO 100, a premium petrol fuel, in 2017.
Lukoil reached a final investment decision (FID) on a 2.1Mtpa delayed coker complex at the refinery in November 2017. The delayed coker complex will receive heavy residues from the refinery as the feedstock and produce diesel, straight-run gasoline, gas fractions, vacuum gasoil, and coke.
The delayed coker complex will house a delayed coker unit, a diesel hydrotreatment unit, a gas fractionation unit, as well as sulphur and hydrogen production units.
The construction of the new complex was started in August 2018 with the start of operations expected in the second half of 2021.
The complex will enable the refinery to increase the production of light products and reduce the fuel oil production by 2.7Mtpa.
An isomerisation unit, with a feedstock capacity of 800,000tpa, is also being constructed at the refinery to increase the production of petrol. The unit is expected to start operations in the second quarter of 2021.
Honeywell UOP was contracted to provide process technologies for the production of cleaner-burning high-octane fuels meeting Euro-V emission standards at the Lukoil Nizhny Novgorod refinery in March 2021. The scope of the contract includes the technology licensing, design services, as well as supply of equipment, catalysts, and adsorbents.
As part of the contract, a new UOP Ethermax™ unit will be installed, while the existing Selective Hydrogenation (SHP) units and the hydrofluoric alkylation units will be revamped. The UOP Ethermax™ unit will have an annual production capacity of approximately 215,000t of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), which is a high-octane gasoline additive.
Lummus Novolen Technology received a contract for providing the technology license for a polypropylene unit in the refinery in September 2020. The scope of the contract includes the technology license for a 500,000tpa polypropylene unit, along with the basic design engineering, training and services, and the supply of catalyst.
KT-Kinetics Technology, a subsidiary of Maire Tecnimont, was awarded two engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts worth approximately £400mn ($527mn) for five refinery process units as part of the deep conversion complex project for the refinery in July 2018.
The scope of the contract includes the EPC works for a 1.53Mtpa diesel fuel hydrotreater unit, a 50,000 cubic metres per hour hydrogen production unit, a 60 million cubic metres per hour pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit, a 425,000tpa gas fractionation unit, and a 255 tonnes per day (tpd) sulphur recovery unit.
McDermott bagged an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for a delayed coker unit for the deep conversion complex at the refinery in October 2018. The value of the contract ranges between $250-500mn (£190.2-380.5mn).
Earlier, CB&I was awarded a contract for the detailed engineering, procurement, and supply of process equipment including two proprietary delayed coking heaters for the deep conversion complex at the refinery in November 2017. CB&I merged with McDermott in May 2018.
Previously, Chevron Lummus Global, a joint venture between Chevron and Lummus Technology, bagged a contract to provide delayed coking technology license for the process units in the deep conversion complex in 2016.

The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.
As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.
The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:
Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.
Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.
Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.
The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.
Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.
