.... Sailboats docked at Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club / Marina

Table set up.

Early morning on June 20, 2008.

Buzz in our city's busy restaurant scene is usually about new openings or closings, star chefs coming or going, the use of local ingredients, slow food or fast food, however, little emphasis has been placed about the generosity of the restaurateurs or their staff. On June 20, 2008, I had the pleasure of helping out at the annual Set Sail for Hope event raising nearly $150,000 for Camp Trillium. The single day affair benefits children suffering from cancer, where everything enjoyed was donated by 28 well established restaurants from the GTA and participation from chefs, including C5's Teddy Corrado, Executive Chef Emerik Padjan from Fred's Not Here (321 King Street West), Rodney's Oyster House (469 King Street West), Jess Ostlund from Ruth's Chris (145 Richmond Street West), as well as sous chefs and staff from Aqua Restaurante (10 Front Street West, BCE Place) were all voluntary.

Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club celebrates its 90th anniversary year

ashbridges bay yacht club photos

By ALEXANDROS VAROUTAS

For a community named after its waterfront location, the Beach has understandably embraced Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) as a hub for those interested in getting out on to the water and experiencing the joys of the lake. This year, the club is celebrating its 90th anniversary and looking back at its modest beginnings.

The ABYC was founded in 1932, during the peak of the Great Depression, by Archie Walker, Bob Walker, Rollie Alsop, and Johnny Gibson. With the faltering economy and an uncertain future ahead of them, they found respite by getting out on the open water for sail boat racing with friends.

The club was originally located at Knox and Eastern Avenues and served as a way into Toronto-wide inter-club competitions, which inevitably led to more people wanting to join.

But with little money going around to spend on leisure, aspiring members would opt to contribute in other ways in exchange for a spot in the club. So, in 1936, the first clubhouse was built by the club members themselves, which set off a lasting tradition of member contribution in lieu of high membership fees.

Today, this model carries on, allowing more people to join the club and get involved in sailing.

Carolyn Weckesser, a commodore at the club and the chair of the 90th anniversary celebration committee, explained how this has led to a very diverse group of members today, from around the city and of all different age groups.

“Its a sport that you can take up at any age and do as long as you feel healthy enough to do it,” she said, adding that they have sailors from as young as five all the way up to 95.

They’ve seen a significant increase in membership over the last five years, likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic which left many looking for an outdoor hobby.

“No better social distancing than out on the water,” said Weckesser.

One of the more notable club members is Sarah Douglas, who has won multiple awards in sailing competitions around the world and set the best result (sixth) for a Canadian woman in an individual sailing event at the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympics. Douglas also plans compete again at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

But members don’t need to be Olympic athletes to join the fun. ABYC’s vision is to open up the shore to the community and enable anyone to participate in watersports.

Even without a boat, members can get on the water through the co-operative sailing program, which lets you sail on one of the club-owned boats.

For those that might be new to the water and don’t want to sail right away, there are also kayak and paddleboard programs that give members a chance to wet their feet, so to speak.

In keeping with its vision of inclusion, ABYC has also partnered with Broad Reach Canada this year, an organization dedicated to equality and inclusion through sailing.

Yachting and sailing has traditionally been seen as an exclusive activity, often associated with those who are wealthy. Through their partnership with Broad Reach and low membership fees, ABYC continues its efforts towards making these activities accessible for all who are interested, regardless of their socio-economic status.

Over the years the club has hosted a number of regional, local and national sailing regattas, and will be hosting many more this year as they celebrate their 90th anniversary.

The celebrations will culminate with the Anniversary Heritage Weekend Sept. 17 and 18.

On Deck: Ashbridge‰Ûªs Bay Yacht Club

The Ashbridge‰Ûªs Bay Yacht Club in Toronto is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2022. “On Deck” discussion with Past Commodores Rick Humphrey and Carolyn Weckesser. Weckesser is also the Chair of the 90th Anniversary Celebration Committee.

ashbridges bay yacht club photos

We formed an organizing Committee of Members who have planned three significant signature events, including a night of history through readings, skits, songs and slides, a weekend of events in June coinciding with our annual Sail Past celebration, and concluding with a weekend of heritage-inspired events in September. These three events are being planned on top of an ambitious schedule of regattas, cruises, club racing and education programs for youth and adults, all with a celebratory anniversary flair!

How did your Club start out in 1932?

In the words of our first Commodore, Archie Walker: ‰ÛÏa bunch of us used to hang around Humphrey‰Ûªs Boat Yard in the early 1920s, and I guess it was about 1931 before someone suggested that we form a yacht club. There were four of us and we had a meeting to talk about our plans. They elected me Commodore ‰ÛÒ why? I‰Ûªll never know! ‰ÛÒ and our first official clubhouse was my dad‰Ûªs boathouse on Eastern Avenue.‰Û

In 1936, the clubhouse, which had been trucked to the club grounds, was opened officially on a site just north of our current Club and boats were hauled at the Club for the first time in 1938.

The 90-year history of Ashbridge‰Ûªs Bay Yacht Club is a tale of continuous growth and a commitment to offer the very best of sailing and boating in Toronto, as well as to advance watersports in its broadest sense.

The Club was formed in 1932 to help organize modest sailing regattas for local sailors as a way of getting some respite from the worsening economic times of the Great Depression.

Being a leader in the sailing community is a role ABYC has always aspired to fulfill. Whether it has been as a host of a wide range of local, regional or national regattas, in the formation of the Lake Ontario Cruising Club Association (LOCCA), sustaining a commitment to youth and adult sail training or offering innovative access programs such as the cooperative sailing, padding or paddle boarding memberships, ABYC can generally be found among the ‰ÛÏfirst to the mark‰Û.

How many members does your Club have and what are the categories?

Senior and Life Members: 298

Associate/Crew Members: 360

Junior Members: 44

What kind of programming do you offer?

ABYC offers a range of programs to appeal to a wide variety of sailing, boating and watersports enthusiasts of all ages.

Programs include a fulsome club racing program for keelboats and sailing dinghies.

For cruising sailors, we organize formal and informal reciprocal cruises across Lake Ontario. For youth, we operate a Junior Sailing School that offers CanSail programs at all levels. Our junior race teams are represented in almost every active dinghy class and they compete at the local, regional, national and international levels.

ashbridges bay yacht club photos

On the Adult Education front, we run courses on a year-round basis, both off and on the water, starting with the Adult Learn-to-Sail and Basic Cruising courses.

Recently, ABYC opened membership to the paddle board, kayak and paddling community, offering benefits of membership to a new group of watersports enthusiasts including access to the waterfront, as well as onsite launching and storage facilities.

What kind of services do you offer?

ABYC has a gas dock with pump out, diesel, and gas. The clubhouse has a restaurant with a varied menu serving member dining, race nights, as well as numerous regatta and social events occurring throughout the year for both club members and outside organizations. The Club also has a marine railway for members in case emergency repairs are needed, as well as park areas and decks for social activities.

Do you stage any races? If so, what kind and how many in a normal year?

ABYC has a vibrant racing club schedule and will run over 50 keelboat and dinghy races this season, including both course and coastal races on weekdays (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and weekends.

ashbridges bay yacht club photos

The Club hosts its Annual Open and One Design Regatta in May, and this season it will also host the ILCA Masters/and ILCA Canadian Championships, J-fest and Seahorse Youth Regattas.

ABYC is noted for its willingness to host events such as LYRA, class and junior regattas, and it contributes Race Officers, Race Committees, equipment and boats for regattas around the lake. Among the ABYC membership, there are a number of certified race officials including National and International Judges.

ashbridges bay yacht club photos

The Cooperative Sailing program, which was launched in 2004, has been an unqualified success for ABYC and has inspired newly-certified adult sailors to continue to explore the sport, as well as build and practice their skills through access to a club-owned fleet of keelboats and dinghies.

The co-op members contribute to the physical maintenance of the fleet through a mentorship program. This means that the co-op members are continuing to both build their sailing skills, while at the same time learning about boat ownership and maintenance tasks. A good number of sailors who started with the co-op program have stayed with the sport, and have gone on to become boat owners, lifelong sailors and contributing members to the ABYC and broader sailing community.

ashbridges bay yacht club photos

Recently, ABYC entered into a partnership with the Broad Reach Organization. This group‰Ûªs mandate is to introduce keelboat sailing to young people who would not normally have access to sailing. Diversity and inclusivity are at the core of the purpose of this group. A keelboat will be moored at ABYC to support their programming and a special membership category will be created to enable members of this group to be part of our community. We hope to partner with this group with our Junior Sailing School, which will be part of our upcoming Adventure Sailing program in 2023.

In addition, ABYC has developed a longstanding relationship with Toronto‰Ûªs Eastern Beaches area through its participation in the community‰Ûªs Annual Easter Parade.

The Club has consistently provided spaces in our Junior Sailing School for children who are at a disadvantage financially and we can note a relationship with Centre 55 in Toronto.

How did you manage to get through the pandemic?

As is the case with all organizations during the pandemic, ABYC had to pivot to alternative programming or scheduling to serve members. Our launch dates were delayed twice and our launch and haul out procedures were adapted to a smaller work crew and to alterations to equipment. And of course, there were reduced services available.

Having noted that, our club members were able to communicate through Zoom for meetings and socials, and club newsletters. Our club house food and beverage services were modified with all safety precautions in place and we developed a well-subscribed takeout service.

Despite the pandemic, for the past two seasons we were able to offer club series racing, a couple of regattas and an extensive Junior Sailing School.

Most notably, ABYC was able to complete a major harbour improvement and dock upgrade, an expansion and replacement project that has seen the harbour transformed to almost exclusively floating docks that can host 292 keelboats, all during the pandemic.

In a way, it was an exciting time!

What makes the Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club unique?

ABYC‰Ûªs vision statement is to offer the very best of sailing and boating in Toronto, where anyone can escape and share their passion for adventures on the water.

Our values include being friendly, open and welcoming, inclusive and diverse. These values are realized through a long-term commitment to creating an environment in which everyone is welcome and the whole family can enjoy the facilities and programs.

On a historical note, ABYC was established at the height of the Great Depression. From its early days, and out of necessity in those hard times, an ethic of voluntary labour from members, in place of high fees, was a founding principle. To this day, ABYC is an ‰ÛÏAll Hands On Deck‰Û organization with members being involved in all aspects of the Club‰Ûªs programming and operations, supported by a small professional staff. That feeling of a ‰ÛÏcan-do‰Û spirit is still alive even though we are now a sizeable club with added expectations from its members. Volunteerism is embedded in our nature!

Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club

At Home on the Water in Toronto

  • Last updated:  May 1, 2024

Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club (ABYC), one of Toronto’s premier sailing clubs for both novice and experienced sailors, is built on activity, on the water and ashore. Our members are involved in racing, cruising, and day-sailing during the boating season and participate in a diverse range of social events throughout the year. We’re a family-friendly club with activities and facilities for all ages.

Known for its spacious clubhouse with bar and restaurant in the heart of Toronto’s Eastern Beaches community, ABYC is also recognized throughout the Lake Ontario region and beyond for running major championship racing regattas , for nurturing sailors young and old through its highly respected junior sailing school , adult keelboat program and intermediate cruising course and for offering great camaraderie through cruising , parties and other events.

Annually we hold an open house for persons interested in joining us at ABYC. At the open house you can learn about our sailing schools for both juniors and adults and other membership opportunities. We welcome those, without boats, who are interested in learning how to crew on a Senior Member’s boat or how to participate in our keelboat and dinghy co-op programs. And of course, we would be delighted to talk with sailors who have their own dinghy, daysailer, cruising keelboat, racing keelboat, kayak or paddleboard. It’s all here for you in Toronto’s east Beaches neighbourhood.

Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club

About ashbridges bay yacht club.

Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) offers the very best of sailing and boating in Toronto, where anyone can escape and share their passion for adventures on the water.  ABYC has been a part of the Toronto Beaches community for over 90 years and is located in the natural setting of Ashbridges Bay Park.  It is a short walk to long stretches of beach and boardwalk, restaurants, shopping and much more.  It has an active sailing community with the ABYC Open Regatta starting the year off, twice weekly race nights, adult and junior sailing school and seminars offered throughout the year.  If racing isn't your thing ABYC also has an active cruising community, hitting many of the destinations around Lake Ontario. ABYC offers reciprocal stays for other visiting club members.  With all the time spent on the water there is still time to enjoy the well appointed club house with rotating chef's specials and social events.  Or, just a drink on the patio looking out over the beautiful park and lake.

Phoned to inquire about purchasing a membership and storing our boat for the summer. I first dealt with a snooty receptionist, Amelia, who barked at me to go to their website in order to see the pricing. If I'm not mistaken, the job of a customer service person is to provide information. I phoned because I wanted to speak to a real, live person who could add up the costs for me. After going to their website and phoning again, I got amelia again. Upon realizing it was me she angrily transferred me to another woman who at least was friendlier but still had to be coached to give an exact, everything included price for the summer (she kept giving me the individual fee amounts which is useless to me, I need a final figure) and when I gave up she said at the very end of the conversation "make sure we are the right place for you," passive-aggressively and in a snotty tone. Pretty sure I knew it wasn't before that moment. Bottom line is- membership could be a positive experience but because the customer service and attitude towards younger customers is so poor I wouldn't bother.

As a guest I had the privilege of going out to ABYC to go do a little sailing and have a bite to eat and a drink. The club house itself is beautiful with a great menu and bar. The bartender and servers were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They have a nice selection of beers on tap as well to meet all members' needs. The members of the club are friendly and incredibly helpful and contributed to a positive experience at my first Yacht Club in Toronto.
