- Baltic Yachts Rendezvous
The Baltic 51 was a high performance, easily handled yacht with a functional deck layout which was equally suited for safe family cruising and fast IOR racing. This was the 5th serial production yacht in cooperation with C&C Design, and as with the previous Baltic 39 and Baltic 37, detailed comprehensive computer performance studies were used in the design evaluation. C&C Design´s chef designer Rob Ball and his team put in a lot of effort into the pre-studies for this design again resulting also in polars and performance numbers that could be used as targets for the racing owners. The computer studies carried out exceeded in details and volume that used even in many of today´s projects, and this design was developed in 1979 when most of the competitors still had their designs made “by hand”.
Another groundbreaking feature on the Baltic 51 was the interior layout. The interior layout designed by our in-house design had the owners cabin aft with 2 guest cabins forward of the owners´ cabin, and this unique feature created a very comfortable interior for long ocean racing or/and cruising. However, the most unique feature was the owners’ cabins centre double berth under the aft cockpit. This was our creation and was first criticized by competitors, but later became one of the most copied interior features in our business.

Baltic 51 is a 50 ′ 11 ″ / 15.5 m monohull sailboat designed by C&C Design and built by Baltic Yachts between 1979 and 1988.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Baltic 51
Basic specs..
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.
The boat is equipped with 8 berths.
The Baltic 51 has been built with different keel alternatives.
Unknown keel type
The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.74 - 2.84 meter (8.99 - 9.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
CentreBoard
One option is a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.
Baltic 51 can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.83 - 1.93 meter (6.00 - 6.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
Another option is a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.
The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.69 - 2.79 meter (8.83 - 9.13 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
The boat is typically equipped with an inboard diesel engine at 61 hp (45 kW). Calculated max speed is about 6.4 knots
The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?
The capsize screening value for Baltic 51 is 1.88, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.
What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?
The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Baltic 51 is about 389 kg/cm, alternatively 2180 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 389 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 2180 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
Sailing statistics
This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.
What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?
What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Maintenance
When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 69m 2 (742 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Posted Tuesday 24th November 2020
Grabau International is delighted to announce the new listing of the 1982 Baltic Yachts 51 ‘TEMPLARS’ F’.
Supreme C&C Baltic 51 from 1982 capable of blue water adventures. True to the Baltic concept in every respect and offering fantastic performance combined with ease of handling and a centreboard keel.
FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:
24 hulls of the C&C designed Baltic 51 were launched between 1979 and 1988 with only a few of them benefits of a centrerboard keel. TEMPLARS’F is one of those few yachts.
TEMPLARS’F is perhaps one of the clearest representations of the iconic Baltic Yachts marque. Built for her original owner and launched in June 1982 to designs by B&C, she has been lovingly maintained since then from her fourth ownership and has been lavished with extensive refit in 2007 and 2013 and expenditure done in the last year from her actual owner including:-
• Preventive Epoxy treatment – 2007 • Engine replaced – 2007 • Rod rigging checked and replaced all uppers – 2013 • Mastervolt inverter – 2007 • Mast and boom checked and repainted – 2007 • Freeboard preventive Epoxy treatment – 2013 • Electrical wiring and panel replaced – 2013 • Seacocks – 2013 • Centre board and rudder checked – 2013 • Teak floor replaced – 2013 • Water boiler replaced – 2013 • New Raymarine radar – 2013 • Diesel tanks cleaned • Water tanks cleaned • Teak deck replaced • Hatches replaced
2017/2018 • Carbon fibre gennaker bowsprit • New gennaker • New anchor chain • New outboard engine • New SSB VHF radio • New preventive treatment • 2x new PVC water tanks
2019 • Engine overhauled with new turbo • New external cushion • New carbon fibre spinnaker pole • New rudder bearing • New steering wheel, backstay, ecc. Covers • New lazy jack • New halyards and running rigging • New sails
Very realistically priced and with the benefit of a caring ownership, TEMPLARS’F represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire a beautifully built ocean cruising yacht that will provide many more years of reliable and enjoyable service at a most reasonable price.

51' baltic 51 cruisers.
PASTIME is an outstanding example of the classic Baltic 51.Ã? Built in Finland, she has had three owners who have consistently upgraded and maintained her.Ã? She is now in prime condition for the next owner and is capable of cruising on a full time basis.Ã? Ã?Â
Among the many upgrades and changes made to PASTIME is a new keel design from Baltic Yachts, installed in 1995, to reduce the 10.5 foot draft to 7'. This allows her to access cruising grounds that the deeper draft would not, while still preserving the Baltic Yachts sailing qualities.
Please enjoy the pictures and information provided and call us with any questions.
