It was very clear to understand

Excellent info to multi hull systems

Great course, good tips about safety

Great insight.

Pointing out the excellence and safety issues with cats. I had a 43-foot one for 8 years and miss it a lot.

I've chartered big cats twice but I didn't know the trick to get the bow to pass through the wind easily until I took this course. That alone was worth the price of the course. Very cool!

Good for understanding the basics!

Sailing a cat is definitely different from sailing a monohull. This course walks you through the differences and prepares you for your first experience with a cat. That being said, it is not a substitute for hands on and time on task. You have to get on a cat and practice to become proficient at handling a cat both under sail and power.

As an experienced monohull sailor, I found this to be right on point. The maneuvering session was extremely helpful and the simulations instructive. The information about sail loads and dangerous situations was new to me: I am very glad I got to go through this before my charter.

Very good testing approach

Veoma profesionalan i koristan kurs Very professional course

Excerpt from the course

And if there weren't enough advantages to sailing a catamaran here is another.

The mainsail traveler on a catamaran is significantly longer than on a cruising monohull. Thus you can take real advantage of this. The mainsail can now be adjusted in 2 different ways: using the traveler line or by adjusting the mainsheet.

When sailing close hauled on a catamaran in heavier air, move the traveler upwind (on the opposite side of the sail) and let off on the main sheet. This will allow the boom to rise a little and "twist out" the top of the sail. Twisting the sail out "deflates" the top of the sail and should be done in the case of slightly stronger winds. In light air, make sure that the top of the mainsail is not “losing air” meaning, keep the traveler close to the center and tighten the mainsheet to make sure the main cannot open up at the top.

As soon as the breeze kicks up, bring your traveler up a bit more and ease the mainsheet so that the boom does not come past the center point.

traveler

Once out sailing you'll be able to dispel one of the biggest "myths" surrounding catamarans because modern cats actually do point pretty well!!

The flatter the water, the better they will point and it'll be possible to sail in the high 30s degrees off the wind if your cat has the genoa tracks up on the coach roof, you will have a nice tight sheeting angle allowing you to go upwind comfortably.

As soon as you bear away from the wind slightly, you will want to bring the mainsail traveler down to leeward and start easing the mainsail (similar to a monohull).

From The Mouths of Sailors...

We got a lot done and practiced everything needed to build confidence and cover all the material. I learned a lot of valuable material from this instruction that you just can't get from a book! We also enjoyed seeing a couple whales, dolphins, and an Aircraft Carrier heading out. Alan C
Our instructor was very thorough, knowledgable, and imparted his knowledge in a succinct way. I'm looking forward to taking more courses!!... well worth the money. carlsteele8 - via TripAdvisor
We left the course feeling like we made two new friends, and with a good foundation to continue what we hope is a lifetime of learning under sail. We really feel like we got so much more than what was promised. If you are considering doing your ASA certifications, do not hesitate to book with West Coast Multihulls. wakepilot - via TripAdvisor
Lance has a calm way of instilling confidence, coupled with his own patience that makes absorbing the information a pleasure. That's a gift, by the way, that few have in any industry. Neal Olsen
Girlfriend and I just finished one week ASA certification courses in Loreto, MX. West Coast Multihulls and this location definitely exceeded my expectations. The port facilities were superb and the instruction was excellent. In fact, we enjoyed our sailing experience so much, we can’t wait to charter Catamarans with West Coast next month. Robert B

Ladies Only (courses exclusively for women)

In a totally relaxed atmosphere, gain the necessary autonomy to sail your blue water catamaran with confidence, alone or with your partner, thanks to our training courses exclusively dedicated to women, called Ladies Only.

The instructor, in this case the yachtswoman Nikki Henderson, adapts to the different profiles and levels, although the content of the women’s catamaran training remains similar to that of the mixed courses.

As a group, learn to:

– Tack and gyb easily and safely – Hoist and trim the different sails – Reef, learn the range of use of the sails and optimize according to the crew – Manage sailing maneuvers

Mixed (courses addressed to both men and women)

Do you need a helping hand to improve your sailing skills on an Outremer? Several times a year, we offer mixed courses that take place over a weekend in La Grande-Motte, France.

Take the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the boat. This will be an excellent foretaste, with complete immersion: you will be asked to handle the maneuvers yourself and spend the night on board, with meals included.

– Prepare the catamaran for sailing and anchoring – Practice maneuvering with the engine and under sail – Practice port entry and exit maneuvers – Anticipate winds and weather: use technical aids, VHF, forecasts, barometer – Use safety equipment and procedures – Maneuver in port

Sailing a Catamaran

Catamaran Qualification and Training

How do I Switch to Skippering a Catamaran?

We get this call almost every day – “ I’ve been sailing a monohull for years and am confident. I want to take a catamaran on a sailing vacation. What does it take to switch to a catamaran? Do I need a Catamaran Certification?”

Looking at switching over to sailing a catamaran on a sailing vacation or to buy? The thought of it can be intimidating and everyone wants to sell you something which may or may not be correct information.

Here we break it down for you to the real story and take away the intimidation.

First off, Yacht Charter Companies are totally fine to upgrade you to a catamaran as long as you have had plenty of large monohull skippering experience. “Plenty” meaning more than say 50 days of skippering a large monohull. “Large” meaning 38 ft (12m). If you’ve done that, you are essentially good to go – except that you’ll need to demonstrate your stated skills to the charter base once you get there. They will want to take you out for about 3-4 hours and make sure you are comfortable maneuvering the boat in the marina and getting the sails up and down.

Sailing a Catamaran

Much of your experience should be fairly recent i.e. within the past 5 years and some in the last year or so. You should not be “rusty”. Also, you don’t want to exaggerate your previous experience because if the charter company feels that you are not so competent to handle their million-dollar boat, they will deny you being able to take it by yourself and demand that you take a Captain for either a few extra days or the whole week. A captain takes up a cabin so some of your guests will either need to sleep on the trampoline, in the sail bag, in the forepeak if there is one, on the couch, or under the table. In this sense just check in with yourself – have you really had that amount of experience and do you feel confident that you can pick up the maneuvering bit in a few hours enough to impress the charter company at the base? If so – go for it.

Regarding operating a catamaran, for now, we recommend that you at least take the NauticEd online Catamaran Sailing Confidence Course . This will give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of upgrading. The course is aptly named – it is designed to give you the confidence that operating a Catamaran is really pretty simple. It assumes that you know how to sail a monohull.

There are some big differences in operating a catamaran sailing yacht over a monohull. Fortunately most work in your favor. Maneuvering for example is a breeze (excuse the pun). A catamaran can spin inside its own length. The dual engines make maneuvering incredibly simple. BUT you just have to get used to it – i.e. gain a bit of experience. So how do you gain experience when no one will rent you a Catamaran?

Having said all the above, we apply the word PRUDENCE. Prudence means you think about your abilities, your true experience, your true knowledge, and how you handle yourself in an emergency situation. You ask yourself, what would a prudent person do in my situation? Many times the true answer would be to get some professional instruction prior to the trip just to be sure. A professional catamaran instructor will run you through everything you need to know when switching over to a catamaran. They will take the time you need to master your abilities.

NauticEd has many professional catamaran instructors and some can travel with you to that perfect destination. Visit our sailing schools page and look for the CAT logo next to each school.

What if I Don’t Have a Lot of Monohull Experience?

See prudence above. It also means that it is doubtful that any yacht charter company will give you the Catamaran for a week – nor should they. You don’t have enough experience. Even if you go through a “zero to hero” program at a school, and get a “catamaran certificate” you still don’t have enough experience. A catamaran certificate DOES NOT GUARANTEE you to be able to rent a catamaran – a full resume does.

Here is a pertinent blog article we wrote on why hire a captain on a sailing vacation. Read that article before you think about “winging” it.

What we totally recommend to solve this chicken-before-the-egg problem is to simply hire a local skipper on your Catamaran Sailing Vacation – the cost will be around $1500 for the week and you will learn so much more because you are actually there and actually doing it. The Captain will teach you how to handle the boat and by the end of the week, you will be able to add that experience to your logbook and resume – getting you closer to going on your own. There are so many other advantages to hiring a skipper – see the article above.

Sailing in the Mediterranean

If you’re ever planning on going to the Mediterranean (you should), you’ll need to master the Mediterranean Mooring technique. The Med Mooring is when you perfectly back your boat to the (very hard concrete) cay (pronounced key), stop perfectly within 2 ft (0.75m) of your stern to the cay, and your crew perfectly attaches docklines in the right manner to the cay, then pick up a slimey line running from the cay to a Corpa Morto (concrete block out in the slip channel) and perfectly attach that to both bows. In reality it is easy and we explain it very well in the Catamaran Sailing Confidence course. But you need some experience at doing that. To gain the Mediterranean Sailing License – the SLC, you need to demonstrate your skills, knowledge, and experience to your assessor as a requirement for gaining the SLC license.

In the Mediterranean, you will not do a Mediterranean Mooring once or twice during a weeklong vacation, you’ll do it maybe 10 times and each time you have to do it perfectly because there is likely to be a 10M Arab Prince’s yacht right next to you.

It is thus a very good idea to become a master at Mediterranean Mooring before you go sailing in the Mediterranean skippering your own boat. Don’t worry we gotcha covered. Catamarans are more maneuverable. All our SLC Assessor/Instructors are Mediterranean Mooring qualified.

Sailing License and Certification

You don’t need a license or certification to sail a large Catamaran in the Caribbean or Pacific. Companies that tell you so are just trying to sell you something. If they just told the truth, you could believe other things that they say but as soon as they say you need a catamaran certification, drop and run away. What you do need is to be confident and competent – if they start there then you should continue conversations.

For the Mediterranean and the Seychelles you need a Sailing License. A sailing license is similar in nature to a car drivers license. It is a legal requirement. The difference is that Countries and States are not set up to do competence assessments on boats themselves. Thus they appoint officially recognized sailing education bodies such as NauticEd to oversee the issuance of licenses. NauticEd issues the SLC which is an officially recognized sailing license for the Mediterranean and Seychelles by those governments and port authorities. Yacht Charter companies themselves are responsible for ensuring that their clients show a sailing license upon arrival at the base (or beforehand). They take the license to the local port who gives them permission based on the license for the yacht to leave port with the licensed skipper.

Acceptable licenses for the Mediterranean are the NauticEd SLC and the United Nations ICC (issued by European companies). The IPC has been known to work although in some cases it has been denied because of its rubber-stamp nature. Some IPC’s are issued by passing a 1 week long zero-to-hero course (only) and the holder shows up to the base with a license but no competence. We don’t knock “zero-to-hero” courses since all education is good education (well mostly). Just that yacht charter companies have thus been burned. You must be competent plus hold a license to charter a yacht. Standards for the ICC and the SLC have been put in place to ensure competence before licensure.

competence sailing

NauticEd provides a Catamaran Sailing Certification in two forms. One is a Catamaran Qualification, the other is a Catamaran Endorsement. The difference is that a Catamaran Qualification means a student has passed the online catamaran course and has demonstrated via their logbook sufficient catamaran sailing experience for NauticEd to feel confident that the charter company will allow the client to properly and safely charter their catamaran vessel. The Catamaran Endorsement means that the student has demonstrated their on-the-water catamaran skills to a NauticEd Professional Assessor and that the Assessor felt comfortable that the student was competent. The Endorsement carries more weight than the Qualification. Here is our support article on Catamaran Qualification and Endorsement .

We hope that gave you some good thoughts about upgrading to a catamaran.

The takeaways are:

  • a short day of training and competence gaining
  • OR find a training instructor for a weeklong Catamaran sailing adventure.

If you’re thinking about taking a sailing vacation, the NauticEd Sailing Vacations team can help with the entire booking reservation process. We don’t charge a fee and often save our clients money by our large database search ability.

  • Describe and discuss what to do if on or both engines fail.
  • Describe options for carrying and towing a dinghy.
  • Describe the method of tying a multihull securely to a dock in areas of varying tidal range.

II. Sailing Skills

Boat handling under power.

  • Cast off and safely leave a dock with at least two different wind directions relative to the bow.
  • Stop the bow of the boat within four feet of a marker while maneuvering under power. Perform the exercise upwind, downwind and with the wind across the beam.
  • Maneuver the boat under power in a confined space, noting the effects of wind and current.
  • Maneuver the boat within 2 feet of, and parallel to, a dock. Define and carry out a bail-out plan.
  • Turn the boat in the tightest possible circle to determine its turning radius. Twin screw boats will perform the exercise with screws turning in opposite directions and again with screws turning in the same direction.
  • Repeat the previous item while turning the boat in the opposite direction and compare the differences between both turns.
  • Repeat the previous two items while making sternway.
  • If the boat being used has twin engines, repeat the turning exercises using one engine and then the other.
  • Steer a straight course of at least 10 boat lengths in reverse using moderate speed.
  • Steer a multihull using an emergency steering device.

Person Overboard (Under Power)

  • Demonstrate a skipper’s actions and commands while under power from the time a crew member falls overboard until crew is safely recovered.
  • Describe at least two methods of getting a person out of the water and back on board a multihull.

Boat Handling Under Sail

  • Function as helmsman and crew giving correct commands and proper responses while demonstrating the proper techniques of closehauled sailing, reaching (all three points), running, tacking and jibing, heading up, bearing away and luffing while noting the differences and likenesses of sailing a multihull vs. monohull.
  • Sail and ordered compass course for 5 minutes without varying more than 10 degrees from the heading.
  • Sail a figure 8 course between two buoys noting acceleration/deceleration times and momentum during turns.
  • While sailing at full power, luff sails and observe how long it takes for a multihull to come to rest.
  • Trim luffing sails noting how long it takes to accelerate to full power.

Person Overboard (Under Sail)

Demonstrate a skipper’s actions and commands while under sail from the time a crew member falls overboard until crew is safely recovered, use two different return techniques including the quick-stop method.

Heavy Weather

  • Reduce sail by reefing and shake out a reef while keeping the vessel under control and on course.
  • Heave-to and get underway again, noting the vessels motion at different angles to the wind.
  • Sail with the mainsail only, then headsail only, noting performance characteristics and limitations.

Use proper anchoring techniques to anchor using the following methods:

  • Two anchors off bow and stern (Bahamian moor)
  • Single bow anchor and bridle
  • Single bow anchor and stern to beach (Med style)
  • Bow to a permanent mooring with bridle (if available)
  • Beaching with consideration of daggerboard/centerboard, rudder and hull mounted electronics. (optional)

Making Fast and Snugging Down

  • Secure a boat to various dock configurations so as to provide limited movement and set out fenders correctly.
  • Take extra precautions to secure a vessel for the night at a dock and at a mooring.

← Return to course list

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

First came the tornado. Now a Delaware Acme supermarket will close for good.

Portrait of Matthew Korfhage

The Kirkwood Plaza Acme supermarket will close in November, spokesperson Dana Ward confirmed.

The store, at 4365 Kirkwood Highway in Milltown, is expected to have its final day on or around Nov. 16. Pharmacy staff at the store confirmed that the pharmacy is expected to close sooner, on Oct. 8. Customers can redeem their prescriptions at other Acme Markets locations, or can ask another pharmacy to call to transfer prescriptions.

The nearest Acme locations to Kirkwood Plaza are at the Pike Creek and Prices Corner shopping centers.

Acme spokesperson Ward attributed the Kirkwood Plaza closure to "real estate considerations." Ward also said the closure is in no way related to parent company Albertsons' proposed mega-merger with grocery giant Kroger, which has drawn lawsuits and intensifying federal scrutiny this year.

More: Hundreds of supermarkets, including in Delaware, would be sold in Kroger-Albertsons merger

It has already been an eventful year for the Kirkwood Plaza Acme, of course.

A tornado hit the store in August , absconding with some of the roof in the process. Customers inside the Acme at the time reported that the twister "sounded like a truck hit the front of the building," and that the tornado had caused ceiling tiles to fall inside the store.

The tornado damage was not a factor in the store's closure, according to Ward. Instead, the end of the store's lease with Kirkwood Plaza owner Oekos Management was the main factor in the decision to close the Kirkwood Plaza Acme. Oekos could not be reached for comment.

Employees at the store have the opportunity to be reassigned to open positions at other locations of the grocery giant, according to the statement from Acme. Representatives did not respond to queries about the number of employees at the store.

In June 2018, Acme closed its store in Dover, alongside Lansdale and King of Prussia in Pennsylvania. The Dover closure affected 85 workers.

If the Kroger merger goes through, the chain has proposed selling off the Kroger-owned Harris Teeter at 31221 Americana Parkway in Selbyville, to Piggly Wiggly owners C&S Wholesale.

"Closing a store is always a tough decision," Acme spokesperson Ward wrote in a statement. "Our focus remains on growing our business, which sometimes involves reinvesting resources into existing stores and exploring potential new locations."
