On board the Trinity yacht Lady Linda

When it comes to building a custom yacht, some owners are hands-on because they want to experience the process; others are hands-on because they already understand the process. The 57 metre Lady Linda was a project for the latter type: a couple who used their past boat-building and ownership experience to create something special.

Lady Linda is the second custom Trinity build project for owners Doug and Linda Von Allmen of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but the third Trinity and the fifth large yacht they have owned. Her inspiration came almost on the heels of the delivery of their first Lady Linda , a 47.8 metre yacht also built at Trinity Yachts. That project had been delayed due to Hurricane Katrina, during which time the Von Allmens completed and took delivery of a much larger vessel, the 60 metre Linda Lou (now Lime Light ), which they had in the works at the Lürssen shipyard in Germany.

It was immediately apparent that Linda Lou ’s 3.48 metre draught would prohibit her from being docked behind the owners’ home on Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway. This was one factor that led to the conception of Lady Linda . The owners envisioned something between the 47.8 metre and the 60 metre in interior and exterior style – a yacht that afforded similar interior space to Linda Lou , but featuring a shallow draught like the 47.8 metre yacht that allowed her not only to be docked in Fort Lauderdale but also to manoeuvre through the owners’ favourite cruising grounds in The Bahamas. So, in 2006, their third custom-build project began.

Doug Von Allmen and UK-based Evan K Marshall were very involved in her exterior styling, which resulted in a breath-taking profile. ‘We love the look of the Lürssen,’ says Linda Von Allmen, ‘so we wanted to fashion this Lady Linda after her.’

The shallow draught necessary for The Bahamas and docking behind the owners’ house was achieved by giving her a wide beam of 10.1 metres, which allowed for just a 2.4-metre draught.

The Von Allmens also specified Lady Linda ’s layout and set several parameters into her design learned from years of cruising. Doug already had a working general arrangement plan in place by the time Marshall was brought in to execute the interior design. ‘In many respects there is nothing ground-breaking about this layout,’ says Marshall, ‘but it was very carefully planned. The owners know how they like to use their boats and each space is given much consideration.’

While the layout went through a number of evolutions, Doug Von Allmen had a basic mandate that was adhered to: keep all guest suites equally sized – an important consideration when cruising with friends and a beneficial one for chartering. Thus, four king-sized suites were specified for the lower deck, a spacious master suite incorporating an office was situated forward on the main deck and a sixth smaller suite with a pull-down Murphy Bed was set up as a gym and positioned directly behind the pilothouse on the bridge deck.

Working closely with Linda Von Allmen, Marshall executed an elegant décor around the couple’s space planning. Lady Linda does not adhere to any particular style trend, but is a calculated blend of contemporary and transitional styling with art deco touches. ‘The Von Allmens’ style will always have a certain serenity, a certain understated elegance,’ says Marshall.

One of the most striking features of the yacht is the mural painted on the stairs – a spectacular hand-painted mural based on the Chariot of Aurora art deco relief once installed in the famed luxury French liner SS Normandie. Painted by Florida artist Karen Wagner, the mural was executed in the same bas-relief style of separate panels as the Normandie installation, yet the challenge here was to present the concept vertically, as it ascends from the guest level to the bridge deck.

Exquisite stonework is a focus of the bridge deck level, where marble graces the foyer as an inlay and covers the surfaces of the upper saloon, extending even to the exterior deck area. The upper saloon styling is a bold departure from the rest of the boat. Featuring pearlised lacquer, leather, carpeting sculpted in blues, silvers and cream, a wood floor inlay by Czar Floors and stunning art deco-styled hand-carved panels by Florida-based Ken Salowe, this large area is simply beautiful.

Farther forward, situating the convertible suite/gym behind the pilothouse moved the captain’s quarters to the main deck. This is a good-sized suite and finished to guest standards, but does force the captain to access the bridge via stairs. What the captain does enjoy, however, is a spacious alcove just behind the bridge that is perfect for chart plotting, manual storage and paperwork.

Another layout compromise, specifying four large suites below decks eliminated the room necessary for a well-sized tender garage, so the Von Allmens decided to stow stow the 7m Novurania and the 3.9m rescue tender on the sundeck, where they are launched by a 2.7 tonne davit. Flush-mounted stainless steel inserts allow the tender and toys to be bolted down in a cradle when in transit, and all can be easily removed to make the space a large entertaining area.

The sundeck itself is a fantastic space, reinforced as a touch-and-go helipad and equipped with extra outlets and amps to allow for bands and dancing in the aft section (which is fitted out with disco lights). Doug also saw to it that a full glass windbreak was incorporated forward, sheltering guests while they enjoy the sun from the sofas near the spa pool or take cover from the elements at the covered stand-up bar.

The semi-displacement Lady Linda is a relatively fast boat, capable of a maximum speed of 20 knots thanks to her 3,384hp Caterpillars. Her hull features a spray rail/chine forward that deflects water from running up the hull at speed, yet is high enough to eliminate the slapping of water at anchor. The hard chine fades to a moulded hull aft, which was confirmed by tank testing to be seven per cent more fuel-efficient over a conventional hard-chined hull design at 20 knots and below. This will be Trinity’s standard hull shape for semi-displacement yachts from now on.

In June, the 57 metre Lady Linda gently slid alongside her dock behind the Von Allmens’ Intracoastal home, silent and magnificent. Six years in the making, the project included unforeseen subcontractor delays as a result of the struggling economy, but experienced owners know that such situations come with the territory of building a custom yacht.

‘Is there a sixth boat on the horizon?’ I ask. Linda and Doug look at one another and smile. Prepared for charter, Lady Linda set off for a very busy schedule that would take her to the Mediterranean this summer and the Caribbean for the winter through Burgess. ‘For now, we’re going to enjoy what we have,’ she says.

When construction of the 187-foot megayacht Lady Linda began in January 2008, the demand for very large yachts was so great that new ones regularly sold for double what they cost to build.  By the time Lady Linda was completed in 2012, it was virtually impossible to sell a big yacht at any price.

This is the time span of GRAND AMBITION: An Extraordinary Yacht, the People Who Built it, and the Millionaire Who Can’t Really Afford it, by G. Bruce Knecht (Simon & Schuster/March 5th, 2013/$26.99 hardcover).  More than a tale of the hubris of the super rich, this is a global story of 21st century shipbuilding—and the blue-collar workers who make it possible.

At the center of the story is a self-made man, private equity tycoon Doug Von Allmen, who commissioned a 487-ton floating palace that would cost $40 million and be formed from more than 30,000 pieces of aluminum.  Nothing would be ordinary.    Lady Linda ‘s interior walls would be made from rare species of burl wood, the floors paved with onyx, and the furniture custom made.  The air conditioning system would cool not just interior spaces but exterior ones as well.    “For Von Allmen,” Knecht writes, “ Lady Linda was supposed to be the ultimate embodiment of his success.  Instead, he would come to question whether he could actually afford to be its owner.”

As a child growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Von Allmen had been so frail that his mother did not expect him to survive, and she told him as much.  Although a high school dropout, he eventually became accountant and was hired by Peat Marwick where he discovered that one of the firm’s wealthiest clients had built his fortune by buying companies with borrowed money.  Striking out on his own, Von Allmen set out to do the same thing.  Acquisition followed acquisition, and every one of his 52 companies turned out to be a profitable investment.

As his wealth accumulated, Von Allmen acquired a taste for yachts.  He bought a 55-foot motor cruiser that he kept in Florida, and a couple of years after that, he traded up to a 76-footer.  “Each boat whetted his appetite for more,” Knecht writes.

In 2006, Von Allmen hired Evan Marshall, one of the world’s most sought-after yacht designers, to create schematic drawings of what would become Lady Linda.  In Grand Ambition , Knecht follows the London-based designer’s roller-coaster ride as he balances his client’s over-the-top desires with economic reality.

In addition to Von Allmen and Marshall, Knecht describes the building of Lady Linda through some of the laborers and artisans who actually put it together.  They include:

Shipfitter Gale Tribble, who had helped build everything from barges and oceangoing cargo vessels to naval destroyers and aircraft carriers.  Having spent 43 of his 62 years crouching and crawling in cramped spaces, his body was literally falling apart, but he could not afford to retire.

Wayne Frierson, a pipefitter who saw a connection between his current work and his former life as an army sniper.  “I have always liked precision work,” he told Knecht.  Lady Linda required more than two and a half miles of pipes, more than seventy times the boat’s length.

Mitch Davies, who was working in Australia to create wood paneling and built-in furniture for Lady Linda ’s interior.  A New Zealander who not many years earlier had ranked as the country’s best eighteen-and-under surfer, Davies loved his work and was unmotivated by money.  “If it wasn’t for rich people, I wouldn’t have my job. But it’s not a goal of mine. I don’t think it’s worth the stress.”

Osly Heinandez, a 21-year-old from Honduras who knew the work he was doing to give a lustrous finish to Lady Linda ’s exterior surfaces would do irreparable damage to his lungs but who was unable to complain or find alternative employment because of his legal status:  he was an undocumented immigrant.

In July 2008, a year and a half after construction had begun, Von Allmen told Marshall that he wanted to add a garage, a $3 million concealed compartment that would house the two smaller boats that Lady Linda would carry.  Von Allmen had come to believe that it would be unseemly to store the boats on an exterior deck.  Although Bear Stearns, the big financial firm, had collapsed four months earlier to foreshadow the economic storm that was by then gathering force, Von Allmen was unconcerned.  “He believed that he—and most owners of the very largest yachts—were still flying above the darkening clouds.”

On October 7, 2008, Von Allmen met with Evan Marshall to finalize plans for Lady Linda ’s interior.  It was also the day when the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted by more than 500 points and when Von Allmen began to wonder whether his lifestyle was unsustainable.  Eighty-five percent of his total expenditures went to his yachts, but he was contractually obligated to follow through with Lady Linda ’s construction.

By the summer of 2009, Trinity Yachts, the shipyard in Gulfport, Mississippi where Lady Linda was coming to life, was struggling to survive and work hours were being curtailed.  Wayne Frierson and Mitch Davies were so concerned about their employer’s prospects that they were looking for new jobs.  Gale Tribble’s health was continuing to decline.  Meanwhile, Von Allmen was buoyed by the partial recovery of the stock market and what appeared to believe an astonishingly lucrative investment opportunity.  He poured much of his net worth, more than $100 million, into the investment, and he thought the profits would be so substantial that they would cover almost the entire cost of building Lady Linda .  It turned out to be a classic Ponzi scheme.

The story of Von Allmen, Lady Linda , and the yacht builders offers a perfect parable for our changed economic times.  Bestselling author Nelson DeMille says GRAND AMBITION “reads like a novel of suspense and financial intrigue, proving that fact is often stranger and more unbelievable than fiction.  A great read and a cautionary tale for all of us whose ambitions exceed our means.”

The 41-year-old Trump negotiated with an upset Khashoggi and finally agreed to drop the name in exchange for a $1 million discount on the $30 million deal. He finally bought the exceptional boat for $29 million. Had the Saudi businessman waited, he would have known Trump was never going to use the name anyway.

The 8-foot draft allows for cruising in the shallow waters around the Bahamas.

Designed with the modern charter guest in mind, luxury yacht 'Lady Lena' offers a refined and sophisticated superyacht charter experience.

The 170.60ft /52m motor yacht 'Lady Lena' was delivered by Sanlorenzo in 2020. Officina Italiana Design has penned her elegant exterior, while her interiors come courtesy of Sanlorenzo. She is part Sanlorenzo’s award-winning 52Steel series and the Italian yard is responsible for her complete engineering package.

Characterised by wide-open living spaces and an emphasis on an alfresco lifestyle, Lady Lena is the prime candidate for charter guests with refined tastes. She is an elegant and well-proportioned motor yacht, with a large exterior volume which allows her guests to make the most out of life at sea. As part of Sanlorenzo's SL52 series, which won at the World Superyacht Awards 2018, she is a successful model that allows for a wide range of amenities and on-board features.

Exterior Design

Lady Lena has a timeless exterior, with clean lines, plenty of glazing and glass bulwarks contributing to her classic look. Her strong bow gives her a robust profile, and her wide open aft decks ensure she offers her guests a lot of space to soak up the sun, without compromising her slender silhouette. She offers a stellar variety of alfresco living areas, alongside premium quality loose furnishings from SUMMIT.

Interior Design

Crafted by Sanlorenzo’s in-house team in collaboration with the owners, Lady Lena’s interiors borrow inspiration from traditional Art Nouveau styling. She has a warm and neutral colour palette, with espresso, blush and champagne hues evident throughout. Intricate wood detailing, crisp cream furniture and vases of flowers enliven her social areas, offset by all the contemporary features a guest would expect on a yacht of such calibre. Both her main salon and skylounge benefit from full-height windows that promote a connection to the world outside, with loose furnishings by Angelo Capellini.

Guest Accommodation

Lady Lena's interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 6 cabins. This includes a full-beam master suite with a generous lounging area, dressing table and spacious ensuite. 

She benefits from a VIP stateroom on the upper deck and four multi-functional cabins on the main deck. For the ultimate charter appeal, they have a highly flexible configuration that allows them to be converted as follows; two large VIP suites each with a living room and two bathrooms; two large VIP two-bedroom suites with main double VIP room and Guest double room; two large VIP two-bedroom suites with main double VIP room and Guest twin rooms; two large VIP two-bedroom suites with main double VIP room and Guest single room with sofa. This flexible layout ensures the optimum configuration no matter what the nature of your charter party is.

She is also capable of carrying up to 9 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed and seamless luxury yacht charter experience.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Lady Lena has no shortage of leisure and entertainment facilities for her guests to enjoy on their luxury yacht charter. She plays host to spa facilities inlcuding a sauna and Hamman, which is adjoined by a dayhead, shower a selection of gym equipment to allow guests' to keep up their routines while chartering. The wellness area is directly connected to the beach club, placing everything at sea level.

The yacht also has a huge repertoire of water toys and nautical accessories at guests' disposal, including Seabobs, Water-Skis, Inflatable kayaks, and stand-up Paddleboards. To ensure a clutter-free beach club, she plays host to two inflatable swim platforms from which toys and tenders can be launched.

Special Features

Lady Lena is home to one of the most impressive beach clubs on any charter yacht. The unique glass bottom of the pool above allows light to flood in and create a truly phenomenal setting for whatever you choose. Whether it be socialising, entertaining or relaxing, the beach club is primed for any occassion. It maintains a complete harmony with the sea thanks to fold-out balconies on both sides of the beam, and enhances a connection to the main deck aft above.

The pool itself adds to the allure of the motor yacht. It is an endless pool, with a counter-current jet which allows for 'endless' swimming. It also has jacuzzi functions for a more relaxed experience, and is flanked by a sunbathing area that ensures the space is social and convivial.

Performance & Range

She is built with Steel hull and Aluminium superstructure. With a cruising speed of 14 knots, a maximum speed of 16.5 knots and a range of 4,400nm from her 55,000 litre fuel tanks, she is the perfect combination of performance and luxury.

Onboard Lady Lena has a range of toys and accessories to keep you and your guests entertained on the water throughout your stay. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. Also there are Jobe Airstream 3P towable toys offering fun and adventure. Another excellent feature is a Jobe Hemi trainer waterski that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. If that isn't enough Lady Lena also features a seabob, kayaks, inflatable water toys, paddleboards and scooters. Lady Lena also sports a Castoldi Tender to transport you with ease.

The entire space is surrounded by panoramic windows ensuring optimum natural light and unrivalled views. A day head is available on the starboard side foyer. Additionally, the master stateroom is on the main deck, spreading a full beam of the yacht forward and featuring a private study, large marble ensuite with shower and a Jacuzzi tub. The master stateroom boasts a further private ensuite with a tub.

On the upper deck is a contemporary sky lounge, offering a multi-functional layout. The aft area is circular in shape and has a sofa, occasional chairs and drop down large flat screen TV, creating a perfect theatre lounge. Forward is a generous upper salon, complete with lounge seating, games table and wet bar. The upper lounge has a refined atmosphere of lavish sea blues and silver fabrics, deep rich woods and bespoke detailing. The lower deck has 4 guest cabins, each with private ensuite facilities, while the upper deck offers a further queen cabin.

The yachts exterior living is exceptionally spacious and laid over 3 decks. Adjacent to the salon is the capacious aft deck, featuring a large alfresco dining option, shade and steps leading to her large extended swim platform, with a teak beach. The upper deck also has direct access to the sky lounge, an additional alfresco dining option, shade and sumptuous exterior lounge seating. Further forward on the upper deck is a Portuguese deck, offering built-in seating and cocktail tables, along with spectacular views. Her sundeck is well-appointed and very generous.

The sundeck’s aft area has modern gym equipment for the fitness inclined, while amidships is a shaded deck space with seating, tables and a wet bar. Forward is a generous deck area, with chaise lounges, sun pads and a deluxe Jacuzzi tub. All 3 exterior decks are laid in timeless teak.

A Queen cabin is on the bridge deck aft of the bridge helm station, this cabin easily converts into a gym or massage room, thanks to the Murphy design bed. On the lower deck are 4 double cabins, consisting of 4 king size beds, each offering private ensuite facilities.
