We always thought the boating and sailing community needed a better events calendar to help the public know about the extraordinary number and variety of on-the-water and nautical events in Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Victoria, and all the boaty harbors in between. This calendar is our solution, and we hope you find it fills that need. From sailboat races to swap meets, rendezvous to rallies, seminars to seafood fests, we look forward to seeing you out there!

Due to COVID-19, some events may have been cancelled or postponed. Please double check with event organizers before attending.

Regional Sailboat Races in the USA

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA Destinations , Sailing Races

Let’s set sail into the thrilling world of regional sailboat races! These competitions offer a unique and exciting twist on the traditional sailing experience.

Regional races center around sailboats vying for supremacy in specific corners of the world, be it a coastal paradise or a cluster of enchanting islands. These events serve as a rallying point for local racers, as sailors hailing from nearby towns and yacht clubs come together to showcase their skills.

What’s particularly enticing about regional races is their inclusivity. Whether you’re piloting a nimble dinghy or commanding a majestic yacht, these races often welcome boats of all types and sailors of all levels. Whether you’re a seasoned sea veteran or a novice setting sail for the first time, there’s a class tailored to your needs at most of these local sailing races.

It’s not all about the competition! Regional races transform into grand sailing events, where communities burst to life for multiple days of festivities while showcasing their local flavor. Sailors gather, forge new friendships, and revel in their shared passion for this incredible sport.

Moreover, these races often offer affordable entry fees, ensuring accessibility to aspiring racers of all backgrounds. Some races may be shorter and less arduous than epic ocean crossings, making them ideal for sailors looking to refine their skills. Regional sailboat races are all about honoring the sport of sailing and the remarkable community it nurtures.

‘Everyday people’ set sail from Seattle for around-the-world race

Winds died to 2 to 3 mph from the south-southwest and Elliott Bay was glass calm. Not ideal for sailing, but not a storm either.

Those were the conditions at Seattle’s Bell Harbor Marina as 11 sailing teams from around the world set off Friday in 70-foot ocean racing yachts for the seventh leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

The teams, each with 20 to 24 people, will traverse 7,200 miles, from Seattle to Panama and on to Washington, D.C.

Organizers say the event trains “everyday people to become ocean racers.”

Each participant must complete four weeks of intense training before taking part in one or all eight stages of the circumnavigation. As for the crew, 30% of them, who hail from 55 nations, have never been on a sailboat before readying for this race.

So far, the teams have raced over 20,000 nautical miles. The event started in Portsmouth, England, on Sept 3. After the race reaches D.C., it’s on to Scotland then back to Portsmouth on July 27, some 11 months after they departed. The full around-the-world challenge is 40,000 nautical miles.

Della Parsons, crew recruitment director for Clipper Ventures, did a presentation Wednesday in Seattle meant to inspire people to give the adventure a try. As she showed video from a previous race that included huge waves and difficult conditions, she said “You could see people’s eyes widening and thinking, ‘This is ridiculous. I could never do that.’ And then I said to them at the end of the video, ‘I know you’re thinking that but you have to remember all of the people that you’ve just seen on this video are just like you. Two years before that they were also sitting in a presentation thinking ‘this is ridiculous.’ And now look at them. They’ve just really achieved something remarkable.”

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SAILBOAT RACES

Santa Cruz is known near and far for its surfing legacy.  Surfer Magazine named Santa Cruz the best surf town in the U.S. , we are home to countless iconic surfers including Jay Moriarty, whose story was featured on the big screen in  Chasing Mavericks , and we even have a  Surfing Museum  that presents our rich history. But there is another water sport that finds a niche on our coast, with a similarly devoted following. Sailboats dot the waves almost as frequently as surf boards here, benefiting from the tides and currents that make this beach town so special. So it is no surprise that the  Santa Cruz Harbor  and the Santa Cruz Yacht Club have become a nexus for the sailing community, with a calendar packed with activities and a weekly regatta, which brings out even the biggest land lover to admire the race every Wednesday.

sailboat race today near me

There is no question that the best place to be during the Wednesday night sailboat race is in the race itself. However, if you don’t have your own boat, or aren’t lucky enough to have a friend with one, there are several options for getting up close and on the water.

sailboat race today near me

O’Neill Yacht Charters ,  Chardonnay II , Stagnaro Whale Watching & Fishing Trips, Pacific Yachting and Sailing, and  California Classic Sail  are all local, longstanding charter companies that offer sunset sailing for groups from very small to very large. This is a great way to be out at sea, with an expert as a guide to educate, narrate and even instruct on how to sail with hands-on tips, depending on which company and group size you choose.

Captain Forest Roberts of California Classic Sail has a long career in boat building and sailing. He takes people out twice a day on “Sarah”, his classic wood yacht designed in the 19th century. He says that being out on the water “is completely different,” compared to watching the race from the shore. “You have that element of having left the day behind, you’re not standing around with a bunch of people looking at something. Some people will put their cell phones away or not take them at all, which is not a bad idea because you really get a sense that you can’t be reached…the way you left it is how its gonna be.”

If, on the other hand, you prefer to stay on dry land, there are numerous scenic spots to watch the action from afar. Anywhere along the shoreline that spans from  Lighthouse Point  down to  Twin Lakes State Beach  and beyond is fair game for viewing. That means you have a wide range of spectator possibilities. Plan a romantic picnic on  West Cliff Drive  or a bonfire cookout at Twin Lakes or  Seabright State Beach . Take a walk along the  Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s Promenade or stroll the  Wharf . Since the regatta course changes every week depending on the wind currents, the best spot to cuddle up on the sand to watch can be a last minute decision at the 5:30pm start time. And don’t worry about trying to stick it out to the very end if a chill is in the air. Captain Roberts says there is no firm finish line and the fun spirit of this “beer can race” is that nobody is really tracking who wins. “The race is to the bar at the yacht club,” he says.

sailboat race today near me

Speaking of bars, the one spot that is unarguably THE place to take in the race is upstairs at the Breakwater Bar & Grill perched on the second floor of the  Crow’s Nest Restaurant . Arrive early to snag a seat, as it is no secret that this is the place to be on Wednesdays, when happy hour lasts all night long. Order from the long list of half price appetizers and discounted drink deals while watching the sailboats line up directly down below at the mouth of the harbor. Downstairs, the main restaurant is not a bad place to be either, if a more serene viewing experience and lengthier menu is more your style. The ocean view and addictive squaw bread rolls can’t be beat.

sailboat race today near me

Across the parking lot is Crow’s Nest Beach Market which features wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, salads and not-to-be-missed soft serve ice cream. While you wait for your order, peruse the well-stocked gift store selections, and then take your food out to the wide sunny deck right along the water to watch the racers sail by on their way out to sea.

If the wind is blowing north, there are many more options that present a place to watch the race over a meal, if a little bit more removed. The Jack O’Neill Restaurant & Lounge located inside the Dream Inn is primed to offer a contemporary menu and glittering upstairs views. Or duck into any number of classic restaurants on the wharf like Stagnaro’s or Gilda’s for a bowl of chowder and views from every table. Along the Boardwalk on Main Street, Ideal Bar & Grill are also great places to get a glimpse, or stop by the  The Picnic Basket  for some delicious seasonal take-out and a cone of organic ice cream to enjoy on the beach nearby.

What to know about the 2024 Kentucky Derby

By Alex Sundby

Updated on: May 4, 2024 / 7:33 PM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 Kentucky Derby Saturday was the 150th running of the high-profile race. Known as the Run for the Roses, the race was the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, famously celebrated with mint juleps, seersucker suits and stylish hats.

Mystik Dan, an 18-1 favorite just prior to race time, won in a stunning photo finish over Forever Young and Sierra Leone.

150th Kentucky Derby

Here's what you need to know about the 2024 Kentucky Derby:

Where is the Kentucky Derby held?

The Kentucky Derby was held at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Racetrack officials boast that the Run for the Roses is the oldest continuously held major sporting event in the U.S. The Derby dates back to 1875, when the track was called the Louisville Jockey Club.

What time was the Kentucky Derby?

Post time for the Kentucky Derby was 6:57 p.m. EDT. The race is traditionally held on the first Saturday of May and had been on that day for 73 years — from 1946 to 2019 — before the coronavirus pandemic's disruption to everyday life in 2020 moved the Derby to September . It returned to May in 2021 and has since stayed on the first Saturday of the month.

The Derby has been held on every day of the week except for Sunday, but it's been on the first Saturday in May a total of 92 times.

How long is the Kentucky Derby?

The Kentucky Derby has been 1 1/4 miles long since 1896. While the dirt track at Churchill Downs is only a mile long, the starting gate and the finish line are in different places, allowing the race to go that extra quarter mile.

The $130 tickets are for general admission to the racetrack's infield. While the area is surrounded by the track, tickets are sold on Ticketmaster with a disclaimer that they don't come with a seat, view of the track or access to the frontside of Churchill Downs and its newly renovated paddock area. The Derby's website says fans can "watch the races from the world's largest 4K video board."

For $275, tickets were available for the part of the infield near the final turn, when the horses make the closing sprint down the homestretch to the finish line. Those tickets also don't have seats or a view of the track, and they have a $52 service fee added on Ticketmaster.

Politics live: Shapps to make statement on MoD breach; PM accused of 'gaslighting' UK on economy

The government is "gaslighting" the public about the state of the economy, the shadow chancellor will say on Tuesday. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps will make a "planned statement" later today on news of a data breach at the Ministry of Defence.

Train drivers have kicked off a fresh wave of strikes today.

They are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from today to Thursday.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime until Saturday.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when…

As we've been reporting, Sky News understands that the Chinese state has hacked the Ministry of Defence.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps will make a "planned statement" later today, setting out details of a "multi-point plan to support and protect personnel".

The government will not name the country involved, but Sky News understands this to be China.

The Chinese state is to be accused of two or three attempts at hacking MoD employees - including personnel.

The cyberattack was on a payroll system with current service personnel and some veterans. It is largely names and bank details that have been exposed. All salaries will be paid this month.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: "The defence secretary will make a planned statement to the House of Commons this afternoon setting out the multi-point plan to support and protect personnel."

China has said it "firmly opposes and fights all forms of cyber attacks".

It added it "rejects the use of this issue politically to smear other countries".

We've just heard from the Chinese foreign ministry in the wake of allegations the state hacked a third-party payroll database at the Ministry of Defence.

Later today, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps will update the House of Commons on the breach, targeting service personnel.

Now, China's foreign ministry has said it "firmly opposes and fights all forms of cyber attacks".

Labour's Darren Jones has admitted the UK's relationship with China is "complex", but stopped short of naming the state an "enemy" of the UK.

Asked how Labour view the country, he said: "The relationship is complex and there's a number of different areas where, for example, we have to work together on climate change and saving the planet is one of those.

"So we need to cooperate where we can, but we also need to challenge China, where there's clear evidence of a need for challenge, whether that's about its actions within its own borders or its aggression with other countries.

"And if the evidence is clear today, for example about it trying to hack UK Ministry of Defence systems, clearly we would call that out.

"The relationship will be changing over time, but of course in opposition you don't have access to all of the intelligence.

"So we'll need to look at that in the round if we win the election later this year."

Tobias Ellwood, the former defence minister, has insisted China is "not an enemy" of the UK "right now", but is "certainly a competitor".

In the wake of news of a breach at the Ministry of Defence, Mr Ellwood was asked if China is an enemy.

"The enemy is a very, very strong word," he says. "They're certainly a competitor.

"We need to wake up to the fact that over the last 30 years we've failed to defend our rules based order and China's growing economic clout has now allowed it to pursue a very different interpretation of that rules based order.

"They are progressively extending their vast economic and military influence well beyond China itself, collecting up countries that then support that.

"Left unchecked our world will split into two dangerously competing spheres of influence. That's where this is all heading.

"So, yes, it's not an enemy right now. There needs to be an off ramp. China is not going away.

"But right now, we have two competing approaches as to how our world should focus, where it should go. And they eventually will clash. Seriously clash in the next decade."

Iain Duncan Smith, the former leader of the Conservative Party, has urged the government to admit that "China poses a systematic threat to the UK".

In a statement from Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, MPs will be told today of a massive data breach involving the MoD, targeting service personnel.

Responding to this news, the former minister said: "This is yet another example of why the UK government must admit that China poses a systemic threat to the UK and change the integrated review to reflect that.

"No more pretence, China is a malign actor, supporting Russia with money and military equipment, working with Iran and North Korea in a new axis of totalitarian states."

Mel Stride, the work and pensions secretary, has said the Ministry of Defence acted "very swiftly" in the face of a data breach Sky News understands was made by China.

MPs will be told today of a massive data breach involving the MoD, targeting service personnel.

Asked about this, Mr Stride says: "We will know that when Grant Shapps the defence secretary makes a statement to parliament later on this afternoon.

"What I can tell you is the MoD has acted very swiftly to take this data base offline, it's a third-party data base and certainly not one run directly by the MoD.

"And of course they are there to advise and provide support to those who may be concerned about the fact that this data has been breached."

Asked if it is concerning, Mr Stride reiterates that the targeted data was not "an MoD data base as such, it was a third party".

"But nonetheless that's still a very significant matter and Grant Shapps will be addressing that in parliament this afternoon."

He adds: "We take cyber security extremely seriously."

However, he refuses to comment further ahead of Mr Shapps' statement.

Asked if China is a threat, Mr Stride says the UK has recognised "that China is an epoch-defining challenge".

Pressed if they are an enemy, the minister says they are "most definitely a challenge", and it is important to find a "balance" and make sure "we are sensible in terms of protecting ourselves".

We've just been hearing from our deputy political editor Sam Coates , who last night broke the news that it is understood the Chinese state has hacked the Ministry of Defence.

He said: "This is understood to be the Chinese state, possibly working through a contractor, targeting the payroll systems of the Ministry of Defence.

"They are the payroll systems used by serving members of the Armed Forces and some veterans.

"The details that were potentially compromised were bank details, names and in some cases - although they're trying to downplay this - addresses.

"I think there has been an enormous effort since this was discovered at the back end of last week to try and work out exactly what's happened.

"They're not sure how much data if any the Chinese were able to get hold of.

"There is going to be a big effort to reassure people - reassure veterans and serving personnel today - that they will be paid, even though this system is separate from the MoD.

"But I think there is enormous nervousness at once again systems being compromised. We saw the Electoral Commission being talked about a couple of months ago by the deputy prime minister.

"I think it's very significant, it's information about serving personnel."

New SNP leader John Swinney has promised a "new chapter" as he admitted his party has been through a "rough time recently".

Mr Swinney has replaced Humza Yousaf and could become Scotland's seventh first minister as early as Tuesday.

The SNP leadership nominations closed at 12pm on Monday, with the party confirming Mr Swinney was the sole nominee.

Mr Swinney, who was SNP leader between 2000 and 2004, said he was "deeply honoured" to take on the role and his appointment was "the beginning of a new chapter" for the party.

While he said the SNP has "faced a rough time recently as a party", he insisted: "Now, I know there's some controversy that I'm the only candidate to stand for the leadership.

The government is "gaslighting" the public about the state of the economy, the shadow chancellor will say on Tuesday.

Rachel Reeves is set to attack the Conservatives in a speech in the City of London, as the opposition takes the fight to the government on their own turf ahead of the general election.

Running a strong economy has long been the focus of Conservative election campaigns.

And with a raft of economic data coming out this week, Ms Reeves will be looking to get ahead of the government's messaging - saying Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak claiming the economy is improving is "deluded".

The Bank of England will on Thursday make its latest decision on interest rates, with expectations that borrowing costs will be held at 5.25%.

Armed Student Is Killed Near Wisconsin Middle School, Officials Say

School officials in Mount Horeb, Wis., southwest of Madison, said that no one else was harmed and that schools were placed on lockdown.

By Jesus Jiménez and Michael Levenson

The police killed an armed student after an active shooter had been reported near a middle school in Mount Horeb, Wis., on Wednesday, the authorities said.

No other students or police officers were injured during the threat, Josh Kaul, the Wisconsin attorney general, said at a news conference.

“This could have been a far worse tragedy,” Mr. Kaul said.

The authorities did not identify the person killed, but they said the student was a male, and a minor, who attended a Mount Horeb Area School District school. It was unclear what type of weapon the student had.

Officers with the Mount Horeb Police Department fired shots at the armed student, Mr. Kaul said. It was unclear whether the student fired back at the officers.

The Associated Press reported that witnesses described hearing gunshots and seeing dozens of children running.

Earlier in the day, the Mount Horeb Area School District said in a post on Facebook that there had been “an active shooter near our middle school this morning,” adding that the person had not entered the school.

Steve Salerno, the district’s superintendent, said at the news conference that the episode was “any parent’s nightmare.”

“It’s an out-of-body experience, quite frankly,” Mr. Salerno said.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice said it had opened an investigation into “the entirety of the incident,” adding that the officers involved were wearing body cameras.

Before the news conference, the district in Mount Horeb, a village of 7,600 residents, about 20 miles southwest of Madison, said that an initial search of the middle school had not turned up any additional suspects.

“As importantly, we have no reports of individuals being harmed, with the exception of the alleged assailant,” the district said. Schools in Mount Horeb were in “hard lockdown,” the district said, as police officers circulated through the middle school.

The district initially urged parents not to come to the middle school for their children.

“Students will remain in buildings while the police continue their investigation,” the district said, adding that “reunification will take time and will be done in stages.”

Mr. Kaul said that the reunification was still ongoing on Wednesday night, after the district had said it would begin dismissing students at 5 p.m. local time.

Melissa Alvarado told WMTV, a Wisconsin television station, that she was at work when her children called her to say that there had been a shooting. “Getting that call and not knowing, are they going to make it? Is this going to be our last phone call?” she said. “It’s hard.”

The school district will not have classes on Thursday, Mr. Salerno said, adding that he hoped classes would resume on Friday.

In a joint statement , the village of Mount Horeb and the Mount Horeb Area Chamber of Commerce expressed gratitude to the police and to local businesses that provided a safe space for students to shelter.

Gov. Tony Evers of Wisconsin said that he was closely monitoring the situation.

“I am praying for the health and safety of our kids, educators, and staff and grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond,” he wrote on social media.

Joe Parisi, the Dane County executive, said in a statement that “moments like this turn lives upside down, cause trauma, sorrow, and a moment of reflection for all of us.”

An earlier version of this article misattributed a statement about the Mount Horeb Area School District. It was Steve Salerno, the district superintendent, who said the district would not have classes on Thursday, not Josh Kaul, the Wisconsin attorney general.

Gun Violence in America

Guns in Schools: Tennessee lawmakers passed a bill to allow teachers  and other school staff members to carry concealed handguns on school campuses. The measure, if it becomes law, would require those carrying guns to go through training, but parents would not be notified.

Background Checks Expansion: The Biden administration has approved the broadest expansion of federal background checks in decades to regulate a fast-growing shadow market  of weapons sold online, at gun shows and through private sellers that contributes to gun violence.

A Grieving Mother’s Hope: Katy Dieckhaus, whose daughter was killed in the 2023 Covent School shooting in Nashville, is pleading for compromise with those who see gun rights as sacred .

A Historic Case: On Feb. 6, an American jury convicted a parent for a mass shooting carried out by their child for the first time. Lisa Miller, a reporter who has been following the case since its beginning, explains what the verdict really means .

Echoing Through School Grounds: In a Rhode Island city, gunshots from AR-15-style weapons have become the daily soundtrack for a school within 500 yards of a police shooting range. Parents are terrified, and children have grown accustomed to the threat of violence .
