Beer of the Week: Stillwater Yacht

As craft beer in cans becomes more common, breweries have realized that what’s on the outside of the can is just as important as what’s inside. Cans have far more real estate for design than the paper label on a bottle, allowing them to become true works of art.

One of the most striking examples of can design comes from Stillwater Artisan Ales, the gypsy brewery run by Baltimore’s Brian Strumke. Yacht, a “dry-hopped session lager,” is packaged in a sleek tallboy with a matte-silver front and soft blue-and-gold racing stripes.

The nautical colors and sans-serif font make the package seem elegant, almost regal. It’s an eye-catching piece of marketing: I ordered one at a Capitol Hill bar last week, and a guy a few stools down leaned over to ask what I was having. That almost certainly wouldn’t have happened if my beer had arrived in a pint glass.

The beer itself is fantastic for a summer afternoon: a dry, biscuity lager with a nose of lime and citrus. Flavors are relatively mild, though the earthy, grassy hops stand out before a quenchingly bitter finish. At 4.2 percent alcohol, it’s a very easy-drinking beverage, and it’s very easy to have more than one.

With the constantly increasing competition in the beer market, each individual brewery needs something to set it apart from all of the other options available to consumers. In my opinion the best way to achieve this is to do one thing extremely well, become known as the master of a particular style or set of styles. Many breweries have thrived starting with this model, but eventually every brewer wants to branch out and try their hand at the other styles of beer. This can be difficult from a marketing perspective, if your customers have equated your brand to hop-forward beers then they might be taken aback when you release a Berliner Weisse. Stillwater Artisanal Ales recently ran into this conundrum, they were well known for their line of delicious saisons but wanted to branch out to include more American styles in their portfolio. The solution was brilliantly simple, as demonstrated by the Stillwater modern works series of beers. The Stillwater name is still present but the artwork is distinctly different, at first glance it would look like a completely different brand of beer. One of the releases in this series is Yacht, a tribute to canned beer. Not long ago pretty much the only beer packaged in cans were macro-brewed light lagers, so Stillwater decided to brew their own interpretation of the light lager style (hint, unlike most macro lagers they added a bunch of hops to this interpretation). Stillwater Yacht is currently available on draft and in tallboy cans.

This is a great thing for that area. I live not too far away and haven’t/won’t give the location/Talking Cedar Brewing any business until Bill Lundeen is not involved with operations. He’s done too much destruction to the industry to support anything that he is tied to. How about a Stillwater/Fast Fashion Taproom in Yelm or Lacey?! That would be amazing.

Soak up all that summer has to offer on the 3rd Annual – Floating Fiesta: A St. Croix River Dinner, Drinks and Dancing Cruise! We’ve partnered up with Stillwater River Boats, Lift Bridge Brewing Company, and Dance and Entertainment Studies of Stillwater to help bring this vibrant, summer celebration to life. During this outing, you’ll be treated to a 3-hour dinner cruise featuring specialty drinks, live entertainment, dinner, dancing, and more!

Our event will begin in the “Birthplace of Minnesota”, where your Local Gurus will be awaiting your arrival on the Stillwater River Boats docks. After check-in, you’ll be welcomed aboard our private vessel for the evening, the Majestic Star, a 4 level super yacht which features a comfortable lounge, a dining level, a dance and entertainment deck and a top sun deck. As you board you’ll be serenaded by Mariachi América a local mariachi group, who’ll help set the tone for our Floating Fiesta!

Once you find your sea legs, you’ll be invited to order up a craft beer, house margarita, house wine, or a rail drink to help you combat those dog days of summer and enjoy yourself. Just for this event, we’ve partnered up with local legend Lift Bridge Brewing Company , who’s arranged to have a collection of their flavorful beers onboard just for us! If beer isn’t your thing – no worries! The yacht’s bar is fully stocked with margaritas, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options for you to enjoy. As a perfect pairing to our beverages, we’ll enjoy a flavorful empanada as our appetizer as we set sail onto the scenic St. Croix River.

Our partners from Stillwater’s own Dance and Entertainment Studios will be doing a “mini” dance lesson, as we board the boat (starting at approx. 6:15 PM) and before we set off for our night’s voyage to help encourage you to get out on the open aired dance floor. They will also be available throughout the evening to answer questions and provide one-off instructions to ensure everyone that wants to learn some steps can do so.

As we make our way down river, the Tropical Zone Orchestra will heat things up with their wildly entertaining music, sure to get you on the dance floor (or at very least tap your feet) . This award winning Latin fusion band is based out of the Twin Cities and for over a decade has brought together musicians from Puerto Rico and Minnesota to create some of the best Salsa and Merengue fusion music in Minnesota! After their first musical set, we will welcome back our onboard Mariachi band to keep the party rolling with a lively intermission show.

As our live entertainment struts their stuff on the 3rd floor, we will open up the dinner buffet in the air conditioned 2nd floor. In true Fiesta style, dinner will feature both beef and chorizo/ chicken tacos, fresh guacamole, queso, chips, rice, and beans. You’ll be invited to enjoy your dinner anywhere you feel comfortable, as you take in the beautiful scenery of the St. Croix River and enjoy the festive music from our on-board entertainment.

The rest of the night is yours to enjoy as you see fit – dance the night away and show off your fancy new footwork, play some games and have a chance to win some Lift Bridge Brewing prizes down in the lounge, order up another round of cervezas and tap your foot from the sidelines, or take in the sunset from the open aired rooftop. No matter how you choose to spend this evening, we’re sure you’ll head home with memories as vibrant as the music, food, and drinks we enjoyed on this one-of-a-kind Floating Fiesta.

GRAND MOUND, Washington – For more than a dozen years, Stillwater® was the face of the “nomadic brewing” movement, brewing its innovative and eclectic beers at dozens of facilities around the globe. Now, founder Brian Strumke has dropped anchor in western Washington, where Stillwater® has for the first time concentrated its production at one location under Strumke’s oversight and control.

This shift is the product of a unique partnership between Stillwater® and Chehalis Tribal Enterprises, which owns the Talking Cedar brewery, distillery, and gastropub in Grand Mound, Wash. Opened in 2020, the 35,000-square-foot complex houses a state-of-the-art brewery with a 60-barrel brew house, 120-barrel fermenters, and large oak foedres. The distillery, which Strumke plans to utilize to make Stillwater® spirits, is thought to be the largest west of the Mississippi River.

“I love having the ability to create quality beers in a region where people really know and appreciate great beer. At the same time, it’s great to help the Chehalis tribe by making full use of their excellent facility,” said Strumke.

Following almost a year of pilot testing and fine tuning, the first wave of Stillwater® offerings were packaged in Grand Mound late last week. They include Filson Rustic Gold IPA and Filson Maritime Gose, two beers commemorating the 125th anniversary of Filson, the iconic Seattle-based apparel and outdoor goods manufacturer. Parties showcasing the co-branded releases are planned in Seattle and New York City this October. Three more anniversary beers – Filson Charred Timber Stout, Filson Huntsman Amber, and Filson Classic – will arrive during 2023.

Other Stillwater® beers rolling off the line include classics like Extra Dry sake-inspired saison, Insetto Italian plum sour ale, and Yacht premium lager. Ever restless and forward looking, Strumke is also reimagining past Stillwater® favorites, such as the Wavvy double IPA series (now fermented with a proprietary blend of Nordic kveik and wine yeasts) and Shoegaze distorted farmhouse pale ale. All releases feature the finest, hand-selected Pacific Northwest and Southern Hemisphere hops.

Products will be distributed across Washington state by Browar Polska and Kendall’s Pioneer, both which are part of Corwin Beverage Co. The company had a hand in connecting Stillwater® and the Chehalis tribe after Strumke relocated to Seattle at the end of 2018.

“With Stillwater®, we now have one of the craft beer and spirits industry’s most creative minds at work in our backyard,” said Sam Madrid, COO of Corwin Beverage Co. “Beer enthusiasts should ask their local retailer to bring in their favorite Stillwater® beverage because many consumers don’t know their voice matters.”

The core Stillwater® team is rounded out by Sales Director Samantha Morin and Head Brewer Ryan Myhre. The brewery expects first year production to top 6,000 barrels with the majority of its product distributed within the state of Washington. Broader national and international distribution is envisioned over time.
