Sunreef Yachts is a Polish shipyard specializing in the design and construction of luxury catamarans and multihull superyachts. Founded by French businessman Francis Lapp in 2002, the headquarters formerly based in the Gdańsk Shipyard and currently operating in the company's own facility in Gdańsk , Poland .
A luxury catamaran shipyard [ edit ].
In 2002 at the Gdańsk Shipyard, Francis Lapp rented the first production hall and began preparatory works for the construction of the first craft, Sunreef 74 [1] . The catamaran was launched in September 2003. The 74-foot vessel was the first seagoing catamaran with a flybridge, which comprised the main steering position and relaxation area [2] .
Sunreef Yachts specializes both in sailing and power catamarans. The sailing range of catamarans originated with the first Sunreef 74 vessel. In 2008 the shipyard launched its first power catamaran 70 Sunreef Power JAMBO [3] , designed with the renowned Swiss yachtsman Laurent Bourgnon [4] .
In 2010 the company launched two multihull superyachts exceeding 100 feet: the Sunreef 102 Ipharra and the Sunreef 114 Che. The Sunreef 114 Che was the second largest sloop-rigged catamaran and the third largest sailing multihull in the world at the time it was launched [5] [6] . The Sunreef 102 Ipharra was the world’s first double deck sailing catamaran and the third biggest sloop rigged multihull [7] .
In 2016 Sunreef Yachts revealed a new series of sailing and power catamarans with emphasis on living space and innovative design – Sunreef Supreme range. The Sunreef Supreme is an original line of comfortable and spacious yachts and superyachts. [8] .
In 2017, when the company celebrated its 15th anniversary [9] , Sunreef Yachts revealed a line of sailing catamarans named The New Beginning [10] [11] , including models such as: Sunreef 50, Sunreef 60, Sunreef 70, Sunreef 80 and Sunreef 100. The New beginning concept combines a classic yacht design and modern marine architecture.
The shipyard also unveiled a new range of power catamarans, including: 60 Sunreef Power, 70 Sunreef Power, 80 Sunreef Power [12] [13] and 100 Sunreef Power – a multihull superyacht [14] . The 80 Sunreef Power is the motoryacht model that one of the world-famous tennis players, Rafael Nadal commissioned for himself [15] [16] . His yacht was delivered in 2020 [17] . At the beginning of 2020 the company has been commissioned to build the largest model from the New power range: 100 Sunreef Power [18] .
In 2019 the company announced the signing of a contract for the construction of a 49 metre multihull superyacht [19] . In 2020 the company revealed 2 more superyacht concepts: sailing yacht Sunreef 460MM Cat, created in collaboration with British superyacht designer Malcolm McKeon [20] and 40 metre power catamaran 40M Sunreef Explorer [21] .
The Sunreef Yachts shipyard consists of specialized and technologically advanced manufacturing halls, the paint shop, the upholstery workshop the carpentry workshop, and the stainless steel & aluminum workshop [22] .
In 2020 Sunreef Yachts began to relocate to the new shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, expanding its production capacity. The new shipyard is currently nearing completion and covering an area of almost 85,000 m2.
In the new production halls a carpentry workshop is already operating, with a modern facility including one of the Europe’s largest CNC machines. The complete relocation of all offices and production workshops from the historic shipyard located in the city center to the new headquarters is scheduled for April 2021 [23] .
Sunreef Yachts offers custom-designed luxury catamarans. The shipyard's team of designers works in close collaboration with every customer to find the optimal solutions for interior arrangement. Each yacht is adapted to the owner's navigation plans, style and specific needs.
Sunreef Yachts introduced many innovative solutions to the nautical world. The shipyard manufactured the world’s first luxury catamaran with a flybridge (sun deck) [24] . In 2008 the company launched the world’s first double deck power catamaran with oceanic range – the 70 Sunreef Power JAMBO [3] . In 2010 the shipyard unveiled the first double deck sailing catamaran and multihull superyacht: the Sunreef 102 Ipharra [7] [25] . Sunreef Yachts also developed the world’s first carbon built catamaran-superyacht [26] and the first folding mast on a catamaran-superyacht [27] .
In 2019 Sunreef Yachts developed environmentally responsible range of sailing and power catamarans named Sunreef Yachts Eco [28] .
The Sunreef Yachts Eco range is a concept of eco-responsible sailing and power catamarans [29] . Sunreef’s eco-yachts offer electric propulsion, smart energy management, in-house produced solar panels and ethically-sourced finishing materials among many solutions for a more sustainable yachting experience [30] .
The company is active in many fields of sustainability. At the beginning of the 2020 Sunreef Yachts became the official main partner of the Africa Eco Race [31] [32] . The goal of the race organizers is to raise the awareness of environmental issues. As an avid motorsports enthusiast, company founder and president Francis Lapp participated in the 12th edition of the Africa Eco Race onboard a custom-built rally car.
On the occasion of the World Oceans Day 2020, Sunreef Yachts announced a partnership with Nico Rosberg , becoming the brand ambassador for the Sunreef Yachts Eco range of catamarans [33] . The ambassadorship followed after the former Formula 1 Champion’s participation in Sunreef Yachts Eco Virtual Press Conference on Earth Day 2020 [34] .
Sunreef Yachts partnered up with the Rosberg Xtreme Racing Team [35] to take part in the inaugural season of the Extreme E [36] racing series. The Extreme E teams will compete in remote environments across the globe, drawing attention to climate change and nature damage [37]

Sunreef Yachts is a shipyard that has defied all the odds. Opening its doors in 2002 in the historic port city of Gdansk in Poland, the first few years of business saw more than its fair share of skepticism thrown at the burgeoning builder of luxury catamarans.
At the time, most in the luxury yachting business agreed that there was simply no market for a luxury catamaran. A catamaran, they said, is not a luxury vessel. Twenty years later, it’s safe to say that Sunreef Yachts’ founder and CEO Francis Lapp has proved the doubters wrong.
“There were many ups and downs on the way, and we certainly learned many lessons,” muses Lapp as he looks back on two decades in business. “But we taught a few lessons along the way as well! Most importantly, we proved there is a market for our product.” Launching a new eco-line of superyacht models earlier this year, a growing family of Sunreef owners includes Tennis star Rafael Nadal and Formula One drivers Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg.
Part of what has made the brand so successful is the reason for its existence in the first place. Sunreef Yachts was borne out of a personal passion. As an active sailor and successful entrepreneur, Francis Lapp found that as his buying power grew, the yachts that he loved didn’t. Dissatisfied with the lack of luxury in the catamaran market, Lapp decided to do it himself. “In a way, this sense of disappointment fueled my desire to build. This is how my idea became clear: I needed to redefine the word “catamaran” and give it a luxury edge,” Lapp says.
Francis Lapp
From the very start, Sunreef Yachts set out on a mission to provide more quality and more flexibility than any other catamarans on the market. Perhaps most importantly, Lapp’s vision for Sunreef Yachts was married with innovation.
Practical features such as an easy-to-use retractable dinghy launching system made the catamaran experience a step closer to the comfort and capabilities of luxury yachts. Still, it was the addition of a large flybridge that truly elevated the experience to new heights. The yard’s first catamaran was the world’s only oceangoing luxury multi-hull to feature a flybridge with decent lounging and dining spaces. Today, this is considered standard on board a catamaran.
“Our first models especially stood out with the use of space within the cabins,” continues Lapp in regards to the origins of Sunreef Yachts. “Their design allowed for a new level of comfort with beds placed across the hull and large portlights. Our first innovations also included a retractable dinghy-launching system which was very easy to use. We started with an innovative product which was also highly customisable. We basically created a new market niche.”
Despite these innovations, when Sunreef made its yachting debut in Cannes 2003 with a 74’ catamaran, the industry reception was critical - to put it lightly. Few believed that there could ever be a market for luxury catamarans. “Our first showcase was very far from being a success,” remembers Lapp candidly.
“We didn’t have any visits on board. People did not believe in luxury catamarans, and on top of that, they didn’t think a luxury product could be made in Poland. Industry professionals would tell me Sunreef Yachts wouldn’t last more than two years.”
Regardless of the negative criticism, Francis Lapp and the Sunreef team persevered. The brand’s first power cat was launched the following year in 2008 and boasted transpacific autonomy. Soon after, Sunreef became the first shipyard to introduce double-deck catamarans and, in 2010, launched their largest-ever yacht, SY Che, measuring 34.72 metres and accommodating up to eight guests. Che was also the biggest sloop-rigged sail catamaran in the world at the time, marking a significant milestone for the once-doubted yard.
Innovation is an overused buzzword - though not in the case of Sunreef Yachts. Continuous investment into the company and unwavering belief in the founder’s vision propelled them into success. “Another exciting challenge was the folding mast we designed, engineered and installed on a super cat over 80ft,” says Lapp on the innovation milestones over the years. “At the time when we were working on our Sunreef Supreme range, we also found a way to fit a tender and jet-ski garage on a 68-footer.”
The yard’s facilities have also grown over the years and are a testament to Sunreef’s dedication to innovation. Its current facilities boast a total of eight build halls as well as an in-house carpentry department. The Sunreef yard in Gdansk also includes a state-of-the-art paint shed and more than 20,000 square metres of buildings. Not to mention Europe’s largest computer numerical control (CNC) machines, capable of precisely cutting elements up to 30 metres.
Today, however, Sunreef’s efforts when it comes to innovation are laser-focused on sustainability. Using less power than superyachts, catamarans have long been the greener yachts of the industry just by sheer design. But Sunreef is not happy to merely rest on greenwashed laurels. The Sunreef Yachts Eco line proves just that, integrating some of the greenest technology out there.
“The Sunreef Yachts Eco line is a range of power and sail catamarans that have been in the works for some time,” explains Lapp. “At the moment, it is a key element of our strategy. We want to make yachting more responsible, and I know more, and more of our customers share the same point of view. We wanted to go further than just building boats with electric engines. Instead, we tried a holistic approach and took the time to reassess every aspect of our yachts.”
The result of thousands of hours of R&D - or, as Lapp calls it, ‘holistic reassessment’ - was a line of yachts that puts real, sustainable options in the client’s hands. Perhaps the most significant innovation to come out of this is the Sunreef solar power system. This in-house solar technology is another industry-first, making Sunreef the only company globally that can integrate photovoltaic panels with composite. The batteries used are custom-engineered for Sunreef models and have an unmatched weight-to-efficiency ratio.
Sunreef 80 Eco
But it’s not just about the technology. Every element of a Sunreef Eco yacht has been reassessed, from the build material to the fabrics and furnishings. And since launching the line in Summer 2021, the response says Lapp has been fantastic. “People know that catamarans are a sustainable choice, and they like our definition of responsible luxury. Most of the inquiries we receive today are about catamarans with eco-responsible solutions. Customers today are more and more educated and discerning. There is a positive trend in the industry, and I feel it is moving in the right direction, but just not at the right pace. I am thrilled to observe this trend – if the demand is here, the industry will follow.”
Though Sunreef may have started as a yard with something to prove, success after success has demonstrated that they have more than proved their value - and perhaps never should have been doubted in the first place. With environmental issues becoming ever more pressing, the future certainly looks bright - and green - with Sunreef.

The creative spark and driving force of the Sunreef Yachts shipyard is Francis Lapp – the company’s Founder and CEO.
Born in France in 1958 Francis Lapp began his business activity in the domains of electric power and construction. After occupying managerial positions in the industry’s major companies he endeavored to found his own. An avid rally enthusiast, he visited Poland for the first time to take part in a race held by Warsaw’s Automobile Club. Having discovered Poland’s immense development potential throughout the 1990’s he chose to establish his business there and soon became a successful manufacturer of electrical equipment for some of the biggest global brands, soon expanding to providing services including the design and installation of electrical, sanitary and air conditioning systems for large industrial facilities.
Poland is also where Francis Lapp developed a vivid interest for sailing, having discovered the world of small racing catamarans. This experience encouraged him to buy his first, larger cruising catamaran which he based in Madagascar. With the purchase of more similar yachts he opened a travel agency, specializing in charters on the Indian Ocean. The company grew quickly as clients demanded more comfortable and larger catamarans. While trying to source such boats, he discovered there were no suitable yachts available on the market. This inspired him to get involved in building large, customized, luxury multihulls. This is how Sunreef Yachts was born.
Starting a new business and a lifelong adventure with yachting, Francis Lapp opened a shipyard in Gdansk – a city with long traditions in naval construction and the most skilled workforce. With the launch of the world’s first 74ft luxury oceangoing catamaran with a flybridge in 2003 Sunreef Yachts started a new era in the history of yachting and sparked a change in the philosophy of multihull design.
Today, Sunreef Yachts both sailing and power, set a new standard for luxury, and spread the unique Sunreef touch around the globe. The company is now the world leader in the design and construction of large, customized luxury catamarans, exhibiting at the most important yacht shows including Cannes, Monaco, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Dubai, Qatar or Singapore.

The global authority in superyachting
Headquartered in Gdansk, Poland, superyacht builder Sunreef Yachts manufactures luxury sailing and power catamarans from 18 to 61 metres in length.
Yachting started out as a leisure pastime for French Alsatian entrepreneur Francis Lapp, manufacturer of electrical and industrial equipment, who founded HTEP POLSKA, Ltd. in Warsaw, Poland, in 1992. After purchasing a luxury sailing catamaran for pleasure, he opened luxury yacht charter agency Sunreef Travels. In 2002, Lapp founded luxury yacht builder Sunreef Yachts in Gdansk in order to manufacture sailing catamarans for his yacht charter business. Luxury yacht builder Sunreef’s first yacht launched in 2003: the 22.5M sailing yacht Sunreef 74 , an oceangoing catamaran.
The shipyard added luxury power catamarans to its line, and over the years, the innovative yachts they launched grew larger. In 2010, luxury builder Sunreef Yachts delivered their first two superyachts exceeding 30.48 metres, custom luxury sailing catamarans Ipharra and CHE .
At 34.75M LOA, superyacht CHE is one of the largest luxury sailing multihull yachts in the world. A high performance sailing yacht, her sleek hulls enable her to reach speeds of up to 20 knots.
Superyacht builder Sunreef Yachts specialises in semi-custom and custom multihull yacht construction in composite and aluminium. In addition, the shipyard offers luxury charter vacations, yacht management and yacht brokerage.

Sunreef Yachts, the renowned Polish catamaran builder, debuted its latest masterpiece at the Cannes Yachting Festival: the 100 Sunreef Power luxury catamaran – it’s jaw-dropping.
The 100 Sunreef Power marks a significant milestone in the company’s expansion into the superyacht sector, offering a remarkable blend of space, luxury, and performance.
The 100 Sunreef Power showcases a vast main saloon that integrates the yacht’s expansive deck spaces, creating a harmonious flow between indoor and outdoor areas. The master suite comes complete with direct access to the bow terrace – and ocean views. Five additional guest staterooms ensure ample accommodation for family and friends.
One of the yacht’s most notable features is a partially enclosed flybridge, which houses a custom cigar lounge and 85-inch television. The 16m-wide walkaround beach club is another highlight, featuring foldout platforms and an invisible aft garage that provides easy access to water toys and diving equipment.
Powered by twin 1,300hp engines, the 100 Sunreef Power delivers reliable performance and an extended cruising range. The yacht’s catamaran design ensures smooth motion at sea, enhancing comfort during long voyages.
In addition to the 100 Sunreef Power, the company also premiered the all-electric 60 Power Eco at Cannes. Like earlier Eco models, this smaller addition to the Eco range also offers the shipyard’s innovative solar power system with photovoltaic cells integrated into its hulls, superstructure, and flybridge hard top. This green-energy solution powers both the yacht’s propulsion and onboard appliances, offering a glimpse into the future of eco-friendly luxury yachting.
Sunreef Yachts also revealed plans for its flagship model in the Ultima catamaran range, the Ultima 111. This 33.8m yacht will be designed in collaboration with Dutch design agency Phathom Studio and built at the company’s facility in Ras al Khaimah, UAE.
