Legendary designer Jack Hargrave played an important role in the success of companies like Hatteras, Burger, Amels, Prairie, Atlantic & Halmatic. Hargrave was originally known as the top yacht design firm in America.

Since the yachting industry had changed, bringing the Hargrave name into the future first required an admission that the most successful builders now had their own in-house design and engineering department, and the role of the independent naval architect was also changing. Michael Joyce, who had spent his career in the sales, service, and distribution side of the business, realized that if Hargrave was going to play a key role in the future of the industry, they would have to do it on their own and could no longer rely on builders for their future business.

Hargrave Yachts was established in 1957 under direction of legendary designer Jack Hargrave. Over the years, the company played an important role in the success of companies like Hatteras, Burger, Amels, Prairie, Atlantic and Halmatic.

“In our company we measure our design objectives against Jack Hargrave’s dictum that, at the end of the day, the boat has to perform at sea. Everything else in the design process needs to bend to that single principle. It’s the right way to do it, and at Hargrave, it’s the only way to do it,” said Michael Joyce.

Michael Joyce, CEO of Hargrave Custom Yachts, has always been an innovator. His use of computer-aided design and contemporary modes of communication helped bring the Hargrave Company into the 21st Century. Embracing the changing times and the technological miracles of our age, he has been able to employ technology without succumbing to it. As a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for the finest traditions in yachting and thirty years experience as a CEO in the industry, he knew it was the right time for a truly custom yacht in the 80′ – 150′ size range with realistic pricing to enter the market. The Hargrave History

Without the genius of Jack Hargrave, founder of Hargrave Yachts, the yachting world we know and love would be a different landscape. His design work played a significant role in shaping the face of modern yachting, creating the iconic American Yacht look that survives to this day. From its first incarnation as the top yacht design firm in America, Hargrave Yachts has formed into the foremost builder of custom yachts in the 70′ to 135′ range with a reputation for outstanding service and impeccable quality. Jack Hargrave started his career designing sportfishing boats for Rybovitch before leaving to open his own design shop in 1958. The direction of yachting was forever changed on the day that Willis Slade asked Hargrave to design the world’s first large fiberglass sportfishing yacht. When the resulting yacht, was launched to acclaim in 1960, it marked the beginning of Hatteras Yachts and the birth of a new industry. Jack Hargrave had a talent for combining timeless exterior profiles with practical, functional interior arrangements, producing vessels that came to define the American style of yachts. Over the next 40+ years, he designed more than 75 powerboats for Hatteras, going on to design over 250 yachts for some of America’s premiere yacht companies, including Burger, Amels, Prairie, Atlantic, Striker, and Halmatic. His influence and skill as the foremost American naval architect and yacht designer led to his induction into the NMMA Hall of Fame in 1996, and kept his company on its pinnacle as America’s top naval design firm. In 1997, shortly after the legendary designer passed away, a former employee named Michael Joyce returned to the firm to take over as president and CEO. Joyce was determined not to let the iconic company fade away, convinced that Hargrave, far more than just a design firm, was in fact a brand name. Joyce realized that Hargrave could no longer rely on builders for steady busines. Soon to be the most successful yacht builders had formed their own in-house design and engineering departments. He conceived a plan to expand the company into a constructor of custom luxury yachts, and Hargrave Custom Yachts was born. Hargrave Yachts produces a full line of custom-built yachts, designed entirely to the specifications of each owner. They offer a unique cost effective program that blends a custom design with a semi-production build process, giving the savings back to the client. Their attention to detail and unwaveringly high standards are paying off. More than half of their owners  have built more than one yacht with them and some are now on their fourth order! With Jack Hargrave’s passing in 1997, Michael Joyce —having been a Hargrave employee in years past, returned after a twenty year break to become president and CEO. Michael Joyce explained in an interview— that Jack Hargrave’s name was a brand at this point and had an outlined plan to begin construction of luxury yachts under the Hargrave name.

“In our company we measure our design objectives against Jack Hargrave’s dictum that, at the end of the day, the boat has to perform at sea. Everything else in the design process needs to bend to that single principle. It’s the right way to do it, and at Hargrave, it’s the only way to do it,” said Mr. Joyce.

With a gift of being an innovator, Michael Joyce, CEO of Hargrave Custom Yachts has been able to integrate technology without changing what has worked. As a creative entrepreneur MIchael, with his deep love for yachting combined with thirty years of experience as CEO in the industry, discerned it was the perfect time for an 80 - 150’ truly custom yacht —with appropriate pricing —to slip into the market.

Such things as computer-aided design and ease of communication helped welcome Hargrave into the current 21st Century. Mr. Joyce’s philosophy was that in these days, most buyers customize everything they purchase in life. Production boats were the rage then but they weren’t for everyone. “

In the past twenty years, Hargrave has grown to be awarded as one of the top names in the mid sized luxury yacht market. Winning the hearts of just over 100 individual clients with orders from each, they have quickly become America’s favorite in not only the builder category but qw designers and distributors in this world-class custom yacht. This fave builder averages eight to ten yachts under construction at one time. Then at the Hargrave Concept Studio, they also have six all new models currently going through development and prototyping. Over 52% of the Hargrave owners have built more than one yacht with them and some are onto their fourth new Hargrave! This leaves us to encourage one to take a closer look at this fabulous yacht builder.

Their custom yachts are the most intriguing and sought after by American clients since 1957, and are holding onto the place of number one in their market segment. One is able to bring their ideas of any type, shape or size to Hargrave as they know how to bring the concepts to reality and even on time and, most importantly, on budget. For the first time ever, yacht owner’s to be could now buy a custom made yacht at the same price as a production yacht!

From 1997 on, Hargrave Custom Yachts has been led by Michael Joyce, a well-known figure in yacht industry circles. The latest on the company is that Joyce plans to sell 50-percent ownership —whose family currently holds complete and total ownership.

The founder, Jack Hargrave, a world renowned naval architect has been responsible for more than 7,000 vessels of all kinds. From 1977 to 1981, Joyce worked for Hargrave but then moved on to build the brokerage house— Colonial Yacht Sales. But then in the mid-1990s he became to work on a book about his life and, unfortunately, during this time, the designer died suddenly. Joyce felt strongly that Hargrave’s legacy could segway into a yacht-building brand. He also trusted the legacy could make way for a personal experience with customers. He then acquired the rights to the design office from Hargrave’s widow. They were literally left with the ability to launch a new project in hours because of all the design, engineering, and proven test data that they already had in place.

To continue the historical study, we come to find out the first Hargrave motoryacht was delivered in 1999 at 87 feet and under the name of Hound Dog—today as Boxes II. This sky-lounge motoryacht was the catalyst to bring forth larger, Hargrave Custom Yacht projects. And another tidbit, is the largest-ever Hargrave is currently in build, for a three-time customer and it’s length is a whopping 184 feet (56 meters)!!

Joyce —who had stepped down as president in 2007, while Michael DiCondina walked into his shoes, he has remained the full-share owner. “Mike D,” as DiCondina is referred to, possesses strong leadership. “He has the company poised to expand into even larger yachts,” Joyce asserts. The 184 as one of these.

In addition, Joyce credits the Gong family, owners of Kha Shing Enterprises, with the brand’s success. This Taiwanese yard is credited for the majority of the yachts. 20 years later, they have built 95 custom yacht projects together, with more on the drawing board.

And the Hargrave story will continue on…and thankfully so as a company who has stood the test of time and done so with flying colors!

BRAVEHEART is a 92' Burger Raised Pilothouse Motoryacht. Originally built with four aft staterooms, she was modified in 1989 to two master staterooms with a third upper/lower berth stateroom aft. This arrangement has proven well suited for two couples or corporate entertainment with parity in accommodations. This arrangement could easily be converted back to the original four stateroom, 3 head, aft configuration as no plumbing or important wiring was changed. 

The original master stateroom is all the way aft and features Birdseye maple wood (which is currently covered with upholstery), a king-size bed with under berth lighting, built-in settee and night stands, dresser, his/her wardrobes, TV and lighted vanity, The private full bath to port includes exquisite custom fixtures by Sherle Wagner, a full size tub/shower, mirrored ceiling and white tile flooring. 

SECOND MASTER

The second master stateroom (amidships) also features a king-size bed, desk, built-in settee and his/her baths, The head to port incudes a stall shower and vanity. The head to starboard includes a full tub/shower and vanity (shared by the third stateroom). This stateroom can be converted back to two twin bed staterooms or a queen and twin, or two queens.

GUEST 

The guest stateroom to starboard includes a hanging locker, dresser and two single bunk berths and shares the starboard bath with the amidships master stateroom.

Crew accommodations currently include, three berths, head and shower, plus crew lounge and easy access to the engine room. Captain's quarters are separate. Washer/dryer and additional drawer refrigeration is also in this crew area.

SALON/FORMAL DINING

Leading up from the aft quarters, via a curved stairway with indirect lighting is the main salon. The joinery work is a high grade, raised panel design of red mahogany stained teak inlaid with Carpathian elm burl and accented with traditional colors. A roomy sofa is on the port side and two oversize easy chairs with ottoman are starboard. Plenty of room for additional seating/furniture. Outboard in the rear of the main saloon are bookcases and in the middle are wood framed full height glass panels and a door to the aft deck. Custom wooden blinds and drapes throughout. Located at the forward end of the salon and separated by the staircase to port and pop-up TV cabinet and bar to starboard, is the formal dining area. There is a beautiful matching Carpathian elm burl inlay table that comfortably seats (8) dinner guests. Handsome custom cabinets secure all formal china and crystal. Forward of the formal dining area is a powder room and the pilothouse. 

Just forward of the pilothouse is the galley with granite countertops and upper cabinets that 

open from either side for easy access. Newer appliances throughout. The forward countertop is open facing the informal "Country Kitchen” dining area that seats up to eight (8). A special feature of the “Country Kitchen” is the Chilled wine cellar with hand carved honey teak trimmed glass doors & storage cabinets for silver & glassware with access from both sides of the cabinets above the countertop. Complimenting the raised pane honey teak joinery work in the "Country Kitchen” are cabinets and a table top inlaid with olive ash burl, similar to the main salon but lighter in color. 

Raised Pilothouse allows operating in complete comfort with full complement of gauges and electronics (mostly dated). Chart tables, seating and ample storage. Direct access to flybridge and port & starboard walkways to bow. 

Fully enclosed with hardtop and isinglass. Stidd helm & companion seats flanked by bench seating on port & starboard sides. Helm with full gauges, electronics, and controls for stabilizers, dual (2) spotlights, and dual (2) anchor windlasses. Wet bar, refrigerator and ice maker. Sunpad with seating on aft bridge as well as teak table & chairs. Davit and storage area for tender. 

Teak decks with seating and plenty of storage. Maxwell 3500 hydraulic windlass for dual anchors.

Teak decks on aft deck and swim platform. Access to aft deck via swim platform, teak steps from flybridge or sliding glass doors from the salon. Built in seating and teak table & chairs provide an ideal covered lounging and dining area. Refrigerator and storage for drinks and gear.

Broker's Comments

BRAVEHEART was extensively refitted in 1996/97 with all plans and specifications prepared by a former Burger Naval Architect. Upgrades include new aft deck/reverse Euro-transom which eliminated the cockpit and the boat (bridge) deck extension provides a more modern look than her age suggests.

BRAVEHEART is the last Burger yacht built under Henry Burgers watchful eye. She is 

also the last of the 81’-92’ series designed by Burger and the late J.B. Hargrave. The joinery work is still some of Burger’s finest creations. She is an easily driven semi-displacement hull design with four (4) watertight bulkheads, full keel protecting the propellers, and double bottom fuel tanks. To many, her flared bow is the one of the prettiest Burger hulls ever produced. Her hull design is hard to beat for her vintage and power.
